Reviews of Hillgrove Porter Stores
o. m. r.
It's a traditional English pub with a lot of style, a wonderful selection of beers, and friendly atmosphere. The food really stands out, with a Japanese inspired menu that will give you an izakaya kind of experience. A must go place in Bristol!
B. D.
Very nice pub. Good range of booze, lovely staff / management, terrific location, fabulous food. Definitely go there
F. N.
Really nice Japanese food, unexpected! Will definitely try again.
Staffs are lovely too 🥰
G. S.
Bristol's best pub. Proper beer, a garden, staff that know their stuff, and great Japanese food by Kansai Kitchen.
t. j.
what I look for in a pub:
• Good atmosphere.
• Extensive selection of classic and more funky beer.
• pork scratchings.
T. B.
Great selection of beers and great japanese food. Pub is lush too, nice and cozy
S.
Great vibe, great selection of independent beers, amazing Japanese food …. And great price for a double yay
I. D.
Superb back stress pub. Friendly and a great choice of beers.
B. H.
Nice feely lamps, diinners too very good great Stuff!!! Bout time
F. L.
Potentially the best pub in Bristol. Quality pints, quality seats, classic toilets and funny friendly staff.
No WiFi, which serves to improve facial communication among punters.
J. J.
Excellent pub serving well kept beers. I will return
k.
Finally I found a decent late Sunday roast! They start serving at 4pm so it hasn’t been sat for hours stewing. The beef was rare and delicious with perfect veg and the veggie option was top drawer as well. Can’t believe it was only a tenner! To many beers to choose from and a lively, lovely atmosphere. Get in
H. B.
Great selection of beers. Good atmosphere. Food is almost OK. Roast potatoes were just large boiled potatoes, beef was very chewy and undercooked, kale was under cooked, Yorkshire pudding was cold and soggy, sides missing from one meal, knives couldn't cut the beef, too many parsnips.
J. E.
Great pub. A lot of tasty beers on tap and keg and friendly, fun service
D. H.
If you like beer and lots of choice, then this is the place for you. The walls are decorated in old beer mats from across the globe. Think they still do a good basic Sunday lunch. Poor wine choices.
There is a small outside seating area for when the weather Is good. Also a covered area for when it is not. Nice local pub.
E. G.
Really good food, lost a star as only one cider on tap! Great if you're a beer/ ale drinker.
P. G.
May be the best pub in Bristol. Phenomenal selection of ales, great pop up Japanese food from an eccentric young man. Roasts also very good! Lovely atmosphere. One of my personal favourites.
S. A.
Excellent little pub! Lovely space inside, cosy, walls a patchwork of beer mats. Lots of seating. Great little bar with really friendly gents working there. Spacious courtyard too. Japanese kitchen serving delicious and well priced food. A gem tucked away!
R. H.
My favourite pub in Bristol. All Dawkins pubs are fantastic. Great beer, joyous staff, wonderful wooden bars, great atmosphere . The massive let down of all of them is the rank toilets. Please make them nicer. I will come whatever. The green man, the miners, the portcullis . All amazing pubs all horrible toilets. Please sort it, it would make me happy. Im sure it wouldn't cost a lot. If you read this please still go they have absolutely nailed the pub in every other respect
T. M.
Easily the best pub in Bristol. Great music, the most amazing selection of ales -12 hand pumps, with a range of traditional best bitters through to lots of tasty keg beers. Variety of punters. It tends to be very busy on a Friday night, less so on a Saturday, and you get all sorts in on a Sunday for their late roasts, though it quietness down toward the end of the night on a Sunday. Loving the pop-up food stuff.
P. P.
I'm a big fan of this pub. Homely and lots of choice of beer.
The Japanese food served here is delicious and the chef was very welcoming and knowledgeable.
The dishes are quite small but well priced so I would recommend getting a few to try if you are hungry!
P. L.
Great pub. Always a good choice of beers. Staff very friendly.
J. T.
Proper local pub with ace staff and good beer and amazing food that rotates with different pop-up chefs. Also great Sunday roasts served late but you have to book. Only complaint: uncomfortable seats that desperately need updating. Church pews and upholstery with huge holes exposing the foam stuffing is a bit grim. Still like it.
G. G.
What a great pub! Great beer selection and Scotch selection as well The Japanese kitchen is very good. If you're vegetarian let them know.
Will go here again.
G. T.
They offer a very good wide selection of ales in a friendly atmosphere. They now have a wonderful chef who's cooking authentic Japanese food and when he's serves you will tell you about the food and answer questions - it's a little detail that stands out. Great live music when it's on.
T. D.
What a nice cosie and singular pub. Went there once in a week day (Wednesday) and there was a DJ putting psychedelic Rock and jazz from the 60-70. This associated with the relaxed vibe and the amazing selection of beers, made it a perfect night in the perfect place.
T. R.
Great range of booze and good food. Nice traditional small pub feel. Can sometimes lack a bit of atmosphere on a weeknight when it's quiet, but often packed on the weekend. Overall well worth a visit!
f. R.
Great pub, great ales. Great food from Kansai Kitchen. Can't fault it. If I could afford to, I'd move to Kingsdown just to be closer to this pub.
M. R.
Fantastic local pub with a huge selection and variety of beers. Whether you're after traditional ale or kooky craft beer, they will have something for you. The staff are really friendly and there's always a nice buzz about the place.
G. T.
Easily one of my favourite pubs in Bristol. A brilliant Dawkins pub serving a variety of fantasic, frequently changing ales. An in-house Japanese kitchen operates Tues-Sat with roasts on Sundays. Good garden out the back with attentive and friendly staff.
T. H.
Nice all round pub with nice clientele, good range of local beers and ales, and the food looked great! The area isn’t the nicest, but as soon as you get inside you forget about it all! Definitely worth visiting :)
H. A.
Really nice vibe, a great selection of beers and a nice outdoor area. However, I was recently sharply criticised for my views on Tracy Emin, and I'm not sure if the staff would have backed me (I was right) if it had come to blows.
M. P.
Brilliant selection of cask ales with a cosy atmosphere and friendly and very helpful staff. Would recommend
P. R.
Top Real ale pub 14 hand pumps. Amazing choice. Must be in my top twenty pubs ever. I have travelled alot!! Just a great place..highly recommended. Brilliant
S. P.
Traditional urban street corner pub where there is always a splendid selection of real ales where every visit you will find something never seen before. Love the timber herringbone flooring. The secret garden at the back is pleasant in the summer time. Always friendly vibrant and relaxed but can get very busy late on.
S. M.
Best pub in the world. Well, it's pretty darn good... Great beer selection, superb dj's, lovely Japanese food. Even the other drinkers are rather good. What else do you want?
D. R.
One of Bristol's most established real ale pubs in a historic corner of the city. Lots of decent beer at reasonable prices. Lived in, friendly interior. Solid bar snacks.
H. W.
Nestled between Stokes Croft and the city centre, this cosy pub is worth a visit. The unpretentious bar is packed with a wide selection of beers, and there's a decent outdoor area at the back. Very friendly staff, too.
a. k.
After experiencing the other public houses this side of Bristol I can say without equivocation that this must be one of the best pubs in Bristol. It has a wonderful selection of beers, knowledgeable bar staff, wonderful landlord and an eclectic mix of people.
A.
Lush. Old style pub, nice beer and incredible Japanese food. Long may they continue!
S. (.
Couldn't find the place at first, eent for Kansai Kitchen for the last day of the eat out scheme, and the food was exceptional! Staff were friendly and professional, and hardly any waiting time. Great experience.
C. D.
Good to see this pub has become a popular place. It was pretty dismal there on our last visit . Now it offers a very extensive range of interesting real ales and food. It does get crowded in the evening with mainly younger people.
S.
Loved the Okonomiyaki! 😋😋
B. B.
Had a fantastic Japanese meal there with some friends! The food was fresh and delicious!
Very authentic grub whilst sitting in a pub! Can’t get much better than that!
C. M.
As as fan of Japanese food, the food is incredible, but it's also great for people who just want good hearty pub eats. There's also a great selection of beers, catering for all tastes
J. A.
A little gem tucked off the path of stokes croft. This place always as a huge range of beers on tap and cask to suit all patrons. There's normally djs in the evening, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming
G. W.
Cracking little pub with a homely interior and a wide range of real ales (I'm talking over 10). They do a Sunday roast from 4pm onwards which I am told is always sold out this time of year!
T. S.
The best pub in Bristol. Fantastic selection of beers and craft ales. Lovely but welcoming atmosphere. Top tunes.
O. V.
Had the nut roast for Sunday dinner. Absolute belter, highly recommended.
Nice atmosphere as well, beers good, all round winner. 👍🥇😁
N. F.
It's ace this place. It's just exactly the right side of scruffy & comfy. Keep the hipsters from the door & all will be well. Book for Sunday roast. Tasty pints & well looked after .
J. H.
Great small atmosphere, brilliant funk music, and big tasty beer selection. My new favourite pub in Bristol!
f.
Kansai kitchen takeover is fantastic and the pub is a very relaxed setting with plenty of choice for good drinks. Always a sure bet with us.
S. M.
Cosy pub, friendly staff and the most delicious food, well, anywhere. Can't recommend it highly enough. I plan never to eat at home again...
A. D.
The finest pub in Bristol. Amazing range of quality (revolving) ales, great staff and clientele. Does need a bit of a once over, but still great.
A. B.
Well what a surprise! Great range of beers (17 when we were there!) all good too. Japanese pub food looked great. Unusual placement!
M. P.
Really lovely Japanese kitchen with gorgeous and reasonably priced local beers! My favourite pub in all of England
A. W.
Great little pub. Good beer selection and some nice retro crisps !
S. R.
So many good beers and always new ones to try, great pop-up food options and a lively, eclectic vibe. What pubs should be like.
A. H.
Proper pub, great beer, cider and food, nice atmosphere. Need to order roasts in Sunday well in advance, but they serve them late.
D. h.
Great pub, great beers and very friendly staff. My perfect place
D. A.
Great pub if you like beer. Huge range, no TV. Perfect for people who like to drink and talk to each other!
I. G.
Great local boozer with a good range of stuff and fun crowd

this is in response of
Alex Didcott who left a 2 star review. As a customer at the time of this incident i must say that the way you spoke to the lady who was vaping was disgraceful. if you had POLITELY asked her to stop vaping as your wife was pregnant then of course without hesitation she would of. The "bar man" in question who "got funny" to you was in fact another customer who pointed out to you that vaping is not illegal. he was keen to point this out due to your offensively aggressive tone towards the lady. it is up to a pub whether they are happy to let people vape or not. Maybe if you are taking your pregnant wife to a pub you might want to check with the bar staff when arriving/or call beforehand if they allow people to vape . Then this way you can make an informed decision as to whether the pub would be suitable for you both.
B. A.
Nice pub with lots of character. Good beer selection. Nice staff. Decent, partially covered garden.
F. E.
If you like beer, this is the best pub in central Bristol. Awesome staff who play the taps like a piano, best pints by a mile.
m. c.
A fantastic, slightly scruffy (but in a good way) example of how a proper pub should be, great beer selection covering Cask, Keg + cans and bottles, once you're in you really don't want to leave..Bristol seems to have more than it's fair share of these lovely welcoming back street pubs whixh can only be a good thing...👍
T. G.
Very delicious food! Espescially the chicken and veggie pancake!!! Definitely try some of the Umeshu too
L.
Hands down best beer selection in Bristol, great staff, always vibing, a must visit!
N. H.
Funky pub off beaten track, masses of ales and beers from smaller suppliers , good to see thriving. Fairly small, have outside area.
F. S.
Definitely one of the best pubs in Bristol, real close to the city centre. Great beers and good music.
G. K.
A pub and a half with an atmos like it's half term. A well rounded selection of ales including pale hoppy, nut brown, smooth dark with plenty to chose from and a fine pint too.
A.
A bit of an uphill walk from the city centre to get to the pub ,amazing views along the way .It is a traditional corner pub with a great selection of real ales .
I. C. (.
Authentic Japanese food in a British pub? Yes! And it's great.

(Translated) Pub small, bold Brizzle. The restaurant has both old and young customers, so it is not too noisy. Sit and think about life and lead your friends out to talk about water affairs. There is an uncle who mixes delicious cocktails.
The only minus point is the slightly subsidized toilet.
(Original)
