Reviews of The Old Duke
J. D.
Buzzing atmosphere and very popular with locals of all ages from students to pensioners! Great to see the whole population mixing together. Great live music every night of the week. Good selection of ales and fast service even when the place was packed on a Saturday night. There is a large covered area outside with tables shared between 2 or is 3 pubs on that street. Definitely worth a visit to see the decor inside and listen to some jazz and blues.
F. A.
Great pub. So refreshing to go into a proper pub! Staff were great. Fab live music and loads of friendly folk We stayed all night, thanks for the hospitality folks. We'll definitely be popping in again next time we're in town. Loved the crisp menu 👌
a. g.
Great pub where you can enjoy live music every single day.
With a few tables outside to enjoy your drink.
Now there is a big marquee fitted for costumers from all the bars around and for my taste it is a bit noisy to be sat there.
J. B.
Oh boy.. took my America friend here and we had a blast. The crowd enjoyed every minute of what the band was offering. Very cool place.
M. G.
Amazing pub with great beers, vibe and service. I usually enjoy the lives there especially the one in st. Paddy's. Excellent band!
C. D.
Its fantastic historical pub with nice ambiance and lovely environment.
Nice collection of drinks being served.
If you love music, this the place you can look forward to. A live music being played on a regular basis which makes the place very happening. It gets crowded in the nights and weekends!
Sitting area is available inside as well as outside the bar and it very close to the river bank.
Outside sitting is also good to sit in the morning as well.
J. S.
Legendary bristol music pub. Always good bands and friendly people
N. P.
Fantastic venue with good beers, lagers and ciders. Also with great live music.
V. N.
If you like live music this is the place to be. We enjoyed listening to Jack Galloways' Dancing band a week ago whilst in Bristol. It reminded me a little of Hootananny in Brixton, except this is a smaller venue. The sound was still good. I did feel though the band were at threat from disruption from some people who were intoxicated and too close to the stage. Fortunately, this did not happen. Thats no reason to skip the place though, go and find out yourself.
B. L.
One of my favourite pubs to visit in Bristol, very friendly staff and always great music playing, I was there today and loved it as usual. The young staff are polite and attentive
J. W.
Great pub, great service, great location and I must get back here when the jazz is on
R. B.
This is really special place...live music every night...jazz mainly...the walls and ceiling are covered in memorabilia its a Bristol institution...in the summer they take the windows out and you can enjoy the music outside....the people who drink here span the generations and there is a real buzz about the place...a real community feel..places like this are Bristol's beating heart...
r.
Great music . Beer fantastic well worth a visit
A. F.
What a good night out friendly staff and saw a great band. Good value for money and nice atmosphere.
S. G.
Old Bristol boozer with cosy interior and external tables to sit on warmer days. In old part of Bristol. Great music on offer most days. Good beers on draft
M. C.
Good pub! Friendly staff, good live music, nice drink selection!
k.
Came across when visiting Bristol on Monday evening and had a great time. Band playing, pint was cold and served with style and friendly crowd. Very nice. :)
C. J.
An infectiously fun little bar with an excellent standard of musicians invited to play. Good ale, cider and lagers on tap. Its size is its major limitation, but it owns that and works with it to its advantage.
j. h.
My favourite pub in Bristol, always a fantastic atmosphere, fantastic bands and fantastic people!
R. C.
Not been here years but still a great pub. Wide choice of beer options. HPA was really good.
B. M.
Live Jazz music every night! It sounded too good to be true so we had to check out this joint and we were pleasantly surprised. Great live music from seasoned musicians, great atmosphere and friendly bar staff! Will most definitely come again!
A. W.
Fab pub with great atmosphere and various live music acts in the evening.
T.
One of the many great pubs on King Street. Always a great atmosphere with great live music on all the time.
B. B.
Live music, sound staff. Drinks are spenny but worth it for the atmosphere
Y. F.
OK but service lacking and staff indifferent. Good outdoor seating area.
G. D.
Bill served us and was amazing. Fantastic pub and such a good atmosphere.
M. S.
Live band, good range of drinks, friendly staff
J. C.
Great atmosphere, couldn't expect more on a Saturday afternoon! Brilliant
h. b.
Love the atmosphere and the live bands, great place.
L. H.
The Old Duke is a must visit in Bristol and a long time favourite. After a recent visit, I noticed there was only a very small number of non-alcoholic options for those not drinking. Diet coke gets a bit boring after a while and it would be great if there were a few more choices like alcohol free beers, ciders or cocktails. It would be a great boost as the alcohol free population is growing - particularly with students! 😊
R. B.
Good.... old pub! Lovely courtyard when dry.
G. G.
best pub in bristol, with amazing live jazz music
J. R.
Great jazz and atmosphere. Very busy on a weekend!
l.
Brilliant! Last night I went with a friend and after a few drinks the band started to play amazing jazz that made everybody dance and dance! Unforgivable! Clearly a highlight in my trip to Bristol!! Thanks a lot!!
D. F.
Great live music most nights, always so lovely and great joining in with the bands. A must see in Bristol. Lots of outdoor seating too on Kings street
A. C.
Bit drafty on a wet evening.
Good drinks menu and a growing atmosphere.will need a few more weeks to get back to where it was.
Good donwith s bit of decor freshen up. Old stickers from previous lifetime could have been removed, WCs could have been given a new lease of life.
Lots of potential...
P. B.
Iconic independent Bristol pub on King street. Probably the best on this famous alley. I met many people visiting this place, some of them have become very good friends with time. Definitely recommend
F. A.
My favourite jazz bar in Bristol. The bands are very talented and the environment is super relaxed and intimate. Great place to have a fun night with friends.
B. C.
Pretty good venue and good pub to grab a pint.
C. P.
Good fun!
H. P.
Super friendly staff, good drinks and nice atmosphere
A. T.
Good fun, friendly staff and a little red rave room
E. D.
Nice venue, live music inside, large seating area outside. Would recommend
j. i.
Lovely place but oh my word your dooooooooor man spoils alllll the fuuuuun the way he talks to peopleeeee.
J. M. R.
Best place to have a beer with amazing live jazz music. No matter season of the year, which ever day is gonna be fantastic! Totally recommended!
R. C.
A fantastic pub with a great history and it puts on some fantastic live music shows. The beer is also fantastic. The only reason I wouldn’t rate five stars is that it is one of the pricier places in Bristol to drink - and given it’s small size inside - can take a fair while to get served when it’s busy. On a hot day the seating outside is great though and the staff always do their best despite it being an extremely busy and popular venue.
R. B.
If you can get a table outside in the summer when they have live music on, this is the best place to drink in Bristol. ♥️
If you get a table indoors when they have live music on, you have tinnitus. :/
R.
Great atmosphere and live music
D. B.
Always a great vibe in the Old Duke. Live music from 10pm and a great selection of drinks.
F. B.
The pub is a little shabby and the drinks are more expensive than nearby bars. The staff were nice though and they did find us a space even though we hadn't booked.
M. S.
The Old Duke is a Bristol institution. Still playing jazz after I don't know how many years, remembering the old days of Roger Bennett et al. The good news is, the beer is better.
Keep it up, Old Duke.
A. B. Y.
Stumbled upon this bar before grabbing dinner, what a gem! Friendly and helpful staff with great sense of humour. Fell in love with the beer options here. Great mix of young and mature people with a lounge vibe. Didn't get to stay very long so cannot comment on the live music but if I ever return to Bristol will be coming back. Cheers guys, will recommend if I know anyone is visiting the area. :)
A. L.
Always head to The Old Duke when I'm on a night out in Bristol. Best atmosphere both inside and out, great selection of drinks and well priced too. Bar staff are a delight. One of my favourite pubs!
R. A.
Great pub with a decent selection of drinks. Different band for each day of the week. Swing, Jazz, Blues etc.
Gets very crowded on busy nights/ weekends, uncomfortably so at times. A £10 minimum on card.
Outdoor space is a must visit for Bristol, especially during the summer months as everyone gathers here on the benches and is a great place to socialise and enjoy the sun or warmer evenings.
F. H.
Medium sized pub with a very laid back / jazzy atmosphere. The place is really nice, has a terrace and good cheap beer! The music in there is a bit of everything and they have concerts everyday. It's clean and has a warm feeling to it so it's a great place to hang out. It can get a but loud but that's part of the experience!
D. A.
Very cool. Always good music and atmosphere.
D. B.
One of the best places for live music. Great outdoor seating area and has been on the Bristol scene for a while.
S. B.
One of the best pubs in Bristol. Always have amazing live music on, pretty much every night I think. Always been free entry when we visited and just donations for the performers (who definitely deserve a few quid of your money). A big selection of really tasty ales and ciders with reasonable prices. Was a place we kept in coming back to when we lived in Bristol and couldn't recommend it more.
W.
Manager was really friendly, great atmosphere
C. K.
Nice selection of beers, on tap and bottles. We went there with some friends to check out the live jazz and have drinks. We were blown away by the amazing performance, and the life and spirit of the place. Very good experience, nice people, fantastic music, definitely recommending!
C. G.
Expensive, not a great selection of real ales, although some good ciders. Nice atmosphere.
S. Y.
Brilliant inexpensive pub in the heart of the centre, convenient parking. The live music is excellent. Just joining the Queen Charlotte St and King St. The outdoor seating is recommended. Friendly staff, good food options and ales. The Sunday roast is all juicy and the burgers are fabulous. The food is a bit pricey but not too bad. Free WiFi and Definitely worth visiting.
D. B.
Live music every night, big choice of draft beer. Nice seating outside and friendly staff.
D. R.
Great little place for a small get together, they have a petit selection of drinks and a comfortable set up inside. There is a few seats outside for when the weather is more agreeable. The interior is very trendy and has a very jazz inspired interior lots of old jazz magazine clippings and newspaper cuts, which goes well with the live music they have during the week from blues to jazz.
W. J.
I've drank at the old Duke many times but always sat outside in their very large street beer garden and have always been very impressed by the selection of beers and the politeness of the staff. Happened to sit inside on my last visit and found a wonderful jazz band playing and was able to appreciate the decor of the place. Really do love this pub and will definitely be making the effort to see more live music they have here.
D. P.
Cozy local live music pub. Good vibes, very crowded on Saturday night but people were friendly and music was good. This place was a highlight of our evening when we've visited Bristol for a first time ever. Would recommend
S. E. K.
Tiny old place that would be a better experience were it further out of the town centre. As it is its always really busy and always really loud (it's known for live jazz). When there is music on there is no way to hear yourself think let alone chat and it's so tiny that even if you don't want to escape somewhere for a chat there is rarely anywhere to sit and enjoy the music.
t.
The Sunday afternoon jazz band had the place packed to the rafters. Some nice pints of local cider. Great bar, and just a pity we only found it a few hours before leaving Bristol. One of the highlights of a brilliant weekend.
K. B. (.
Great live music, friendly helpful staff! Good for a meet and a drink my Bristol go to
J. W.
Wonderful place to go at the weekend for a few drinks/beers and good live music!
B. B.
Very good jazz venue with very friendly atmosphere Well done.
l. l.
Loads of outdoor seating, friendly staff, live music and my favourite Amstel on tap,the perfect pub
M. C.
Possibly my favourite pub in Bristol. The ambience above all else is just fantastic, as it is on most of the King Street bars. But what sets this place apart is it's real country pub vibe and the fantastic live music they have on frequently. This pub has a luxurious history with UK Jazz Music and I'd encourage anyone visiting Bristol or locals who haven't to come here and enjoy the vibes. Drinks are moderately priced but it is worth it for the experience. There is also a fantastic selection of beers and ciders amongst many other alcoholic beverages.
J. A.
Good music piped out for a Thursday afternoon. I’d like to pay less for a pint but who wouldn’t.
M. W.
Although the drinks on sale are all very common and quite overpriced (average is about £4 / pint), the live music more than makes up for it. Every night there is live Jazz, the variety of which will pleasantly surprise people who aren't explicitly Jazz fans. There's also a Jazz festival in the summer and an outdoor seating area that's useful for the warmer days. Most days there will be dogs in the pub, but they're universally friendly.
L. Z.
Great pub with a great history. Never had a bad visit and look forward to next time
N. M.
Cool place with good service. Very crowded when I went on a Saturday night.
A. C.
Best open mic night in Bristol on Tuesdays from 9:00. It's a little pricey, but performers get a free drink and the atmosphere is just great :)
Will be going there for many happy weeks to come.
B. D.
Brilliant pub for socialising. Rocked up on a Tuesday evening to find an open mic night with some fantastic acts on! Safe to say we stayed way longer than expected and had a few drinks whilst listening to the music.
B. A.
Wonderful place live bands and great crowd for enjoying cool jazz in town
D. A.
A must visit in Bristol. Amazing music, brilliant building, lovely staff, and it’s also on kings street so has that going for it.
S. T.
Great live music every night! Normal range of beers and ciders, speedy service even when it's full and vintage decor. Even the background music is always good! It gets packed on weekend nights but it's great to start off a night of music
R. M.
I was there in the afternoon, an absolutely amazing band playing with two female singers... Angels. Excellent beer, vibe and staff. Locals and visitors, all ages. Best time in Bristol
T. F.
Amazing for live music. Bands play all day as it is Bristol's oldest jazz venue. Shares a huge cobbled courtyard with a few other bars. Always an amazing place to go, especially a sunny evening!
I. F. D. L. H.
If you love jazz and blues, or even if you don't, The Old Duke is a must for anyone looking for a venue to remember from a visit to Bristol. Good music every night, friendly staff and a decent selection of beverages.
J. R.
Great atmosphere and probably one of the most famous pubs in Bristol. It does get very busy in the evenings and if there is a band on, don't expect to have too much conversation. But the music here is often top quality and makes for good listening over a nice pint of beer.
C. O.
Eddy Martin's Sunday gig as good as ever
A. J.
Very popular, very busy, very friendly and very loud, this is Bristol's famous jazz and blues pub with music most nights. It's a great atmosphere, with a slightly older crowd, and everyone enjoys themselves.
A. K.
The best place to listen Jazz in Bristol. super friendly staff. Owner Stu is fantastic guy you can tell that this place is his passion! fantastic atmosphere. 'Must visit' place in Bristol. Fantastic selection of real Beer !
M. H.
Love it. Great beer, atmosphere and music.
S. W.
Great little Jazz pub, decent price for drinks. Quiet during 'Rona times, still a good spot for a drink. Following all Gov't guidelines etc
r. g.
How could you not love the pub that was mentioned in the book of the pirates of the Caribbean. A pub built in the 1600s.
Old and full of character. Even the people working in this grand establishment were wonderful and made it so much more of a pleasant experience.
A chain run establishment inside. The food was fantastic.
G. S.
Great stuff. Bags of character, friendly staff, and gluten free ale available for coeliacs fed up with cider!
B. H.
This pub is always full of atmosphere and great music. This visit was not a let down! Good range of beers and ciders too. People were Rock and rolling to the band. Just great.
W. T.
One of the funnest pubs in Bristol. The music is always fantastic, great drinks and lots of benches to sit outside. Very hard to walk past when a band is in full swing and not pop in
m.
For music, it's a reasonable place to go, especially if you prefer jazz. At weekends it fills with people who strangely applaud at the end of each number, despite not having paid any attention to the music, but instead they chatted loudly throughout the piece. If you're standing, you will get jostled by others trying to get past, and this is exacerbated by the poor layout (for a bustling music venue). If you're really unlucky, the mystery farter may be there. You will soon know if he is.
D. C.
Cracking atmosphere, great live band, shame about the door guy but still a top place
R. F.
Harry’s a hero. Harrison’s heroes. Pay rise incoming? 👀
C. T.
Great atmosphere inside and out
A. H.
Great old fashioned pub with great Cider, live music and friendly service.
R. P.
Lovely pub that usually has great live music when there are no social distancing restrictions. Lovely place to sit outside and enjoy a drink when the weather is nice
M. M.
One of my favourite pubs, not sure what to say more! Can't wait for the live music to be back.
H. W.
The barman Spike, is the best barman I have ever met! If you are going to a pub it needs to be this one! But only because of Spike. Spike Hopewell.
R. O.
Traditional jazz venue that has been on the scene for decades. Good selection of beers and live jazz throughout the week. Plenty of outside seating too
J. W.
Turned up on a Openmicnight and the quality of the musicians on show was amazing, wasn't sure whether we turned up on a lucky night but the atmosphere was fantastic and would come back again if I ever visited Bristol
R. C.
One of the best pubs in Bristol
M. D.
Nice venue, nice staff. Very good precautions for the pandemic. Always been a great pub. Look forward to music coming back
J. M. G. R.
Excellent place to spend some time with your friends surrounded by great music!
L. W.
Iconic pub in Bristol. Live music every night. Definitely not a glamour bar but you come here for the history, the vibe and the music. Always an eclectic mix of people here!
S. H.
Small, quirky and interesting jazz pub! Went for the old Duke jazz festival which was lovely, great bands and drinks. They had plenty of staff behind the bar so the queue was never that large.
I. B.
This is a great place. Always got bands if you like jazz, blues, folk and stuff. Best on a Sunday or midweek when it isn't so rammed. The decor has got so much character it's falling apart.
S. B.
An institution in Bristol. Beer is good. Staff service is patchy. Another old duke institution. Worth a visit though. Always busy mind when music is on, so be prepared for crowds and queues.
p. l.
A fantastic historical pub with superb ambience.
J. E.
Allways good beer .
A. P.
Great atmosphere, brilliant live music and good selection of beer and drinks. Staff friendly and helpful. Get there early though as lots of people know what a great place this is too.
H. G.
An old English pub with almost always a live band playing. I believe a pint and good music is all you need to have a great time and this place offers both. ♥️
B. D.
Good beer and historic pub environment. COVID precautions are quite 'pronounced' but the one way system does prove how seriously it's being taken. Go to this pub
R. S.
Great pub, amazing for live music! A must if you are visiting Bristol and if you love Jazz, Blues and similar. It gets very often too busy, so be ready to that.
D. K.
Small pub but I would say best pub in Bristol.
Everyday, they have live music which is really nice and good atmosphere. Staffs were also kind and generous.
R. E.
Good pub. Live music. Right in town.
J. A.
This is such a fun place to go out for a night! Live music, great beer and drinks, fun atmosphere. It also has a great history. Definitely recommend this place.
J. W.
This pub is steeped in history just off of the Bristol waterways and close to other historic pubs and the Bristol Old Vic theatre.
Not far from the centre of Bristol and the shopping area in the sunshine it has fantastic outdoor seating and is a great price for crowds together it has a lively friendly atmosphere and inside whilst small it was very clean and tidy and the bar staff very friendly and helpful I would not hesitate to go back to this pub again
A. V.
Nice little bar, they hate synthetic cider (good!) the old rosie isn't for the faint hearted but the standard thatchers pints as good as anywhere. Loz and the chaps are a great craic, cover the ears and shut the eyes for a dose of 80s misogyny...... Georgia is likewise but also stunning.
M. B.
Wow! Shoulder to shoulder no room to move. Every year it's a must when we visit for the harbour festival. The live band gives it a fantastic atmosphere. Go try it, I'll be the one trying to get to the bar.
T. S.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff
R. a.
Fab if you want beer and music. We went in the day. Coffee was our tipple, the bar staff kindly made us a coffee from the staff stash, which hit the mark. We'll no doubt come for another as you're the closest to QC30!
W. L.
Live music and friendly staff make this a really special place to drink and socialise. The place usually busy and not that large. There is excellent outside space.
T.
Full of atmosphere and local charm.
A place where people can interact with the local scene and feel part of a community without the pressure of trying to obtain the oneness of the crowd.
Overall a very enjoyable experience.
R. C.
Nice pub with live music. Drinks are a little more expensive than other pubs in the area. Always packed to the gills but has a friendly vibe about it. Shares a large outdoor seating area with the Llandoger Drow opposite.
R. R.
One of the oldest pub in Bristol and one of the most famous. Regularly hosting jazz music bands. It's a bit small inside but you can take your drink out on the table of king st which act as a common terrace with the nearby pubs. A mandatory stop durinh a pub crawl.
W. P.
THE jazz music venue in Bristol. The staff are welcoming and polite, always up for a chat if it's not too busy. The selection of ales is varied, as it's the cider, with more than the usual boring choices. Some rarely seen on tap in other pubs.
It's quite a comfortable place. No fire or lounging chairs but understandably as the place can get rammed on a week end, with a varied mob of locals and tourists. All there get with the vibe, jiggle and wiggle with a grin to the fantastic line-up. Rarely have I heard a bad note or dodgy lyric.
Crowds often spill out onto the historic cobbled street between the Duke and the Llandogger trow pub. There are ample tables outside and on a summers evening the whole area, down to the waterside is agong with blether and chuckles as the voices rise above the city sounds. I could go on... Yes I will. So don't miss out on visiting this fine establishment , this paragon of public houses in this perfect port city, located in a lushouse gurt corner, of a jewel of an island, floating in firtile fickle waters, separate but still a part of cultural Europe. Because no man is an island, so don't be a clod, come and join the whole, you 'ole.
D. O. S.
Having lived in Bristol now for over 30 years I've seen a lot of changes both good and bad but there are some institutes that never change and in so doing keep the cultural heart of this beautiful city beating. The Old Duke has changed little since I was a student and for all the investment being pumped into King Street this live music (jazz) venue though looking aged still attracts a massive crowd (towny, student, couples, music fans, young and old) and on sunny weekends it's hard to believe you're not on the continent at some alt music festival (though harder still to get a seat). You'll have to get used to the hawkers trying to get you to part with your hard earned (one thing I don't particularly enjoy that's been imported - though I guess it's an honest living) but if you're after a slice of old Bristol this venerable old pub should be top of your list. Food is average and beer varies from esoteric and sublime to undrinkable (hence the loss of a star - if you want variety of ale try the NV up the street) but the music/atmosphere is the star here.
N. H.
Atmospheric ancient pub famous for its programme of music, especially jazz. Has a traditional scruffiness and a good range of beers.
A. W.
Saw Eddie Martin's trio last Sunday - great gig, great atmosphere both in and outside the Old Duke. Still can't believe we have such a good blues band right on our doorstep, performing regularly at one of the top music pubs.
S. N.
Love this pub. Live jazz music every night. The beer is more expensive than elsewhere but you are paying the daily entertainment
d. f.
Went to this pub on a Sunday lunch time. There was no food available, but, there was entertainment in the shape of a jazz quintet. The beer was good. The band was good too.
B. P.
Love the jazz they play
S. K.
The music is fantastic, hands down. The bar isn't bad though the spirits are a bit on the expensive side, but otherwise a definite thumbs up. I will certainly be going again
S. M.
Great place with live music. Mostly jazz but often eclectic enough for a non jazzy like me to still enjoy. Only downside is its small.
C. B.
bristols best kept secret if you believe Facebook. Facebook aside this is a nice relaxed easy going place in the square before you get to the river it has several other pubs around it with many tables in the square to give that communal feeling doesn't matter which pub your in your all in it together. has some good music too from various jazz bands. worth a look if your in town.
D. P.
Pub is old school, a but tired good music venue.
g. c.
Slowly getting back to normal, table service v good .beers v good.
And now you can't be rained on.
R. W.
Only sat outside. But looked well run and was fairly quick considering how busy it was. Will be back!
C. C. D.
Simply a pub where you can listen to live Trad Jazz bands every night and twice at the weekends. Reasonably priced drinks, no pub food, in an interesting part of Bristol.
R. T.
The Old Duke would be one of the best pubs in Bristol without the music, add the music in as well and there isn't any competition, only thing I don't like about it is when I have to leave!
Awesome, awesome pub!!
N. H.
Excellent live blues and jazz. Always a relaxing atmosphere.
S. M.
Quality music for a Friday nights fun
J. H.
Great place with great music, great atmosphere, a real mix of ages and social groups, an all round nice place to be. If you don't like crowds though, avoid on late evenings, especially weekends, it is a popular place!
A. M.
Great pub to visit and enjoy live music
P. R.
Stumbled across this great pub with live jazz, well worth a visit, beware it can get very busy, but still a great venue
J. M.
Great place and decent priced drinks. Bear in mind they only serve strange beers and not the main branded stuff. Liked it there though and the staff were nice
J. T.
Great local jazz bar, live music every day. A Bristol tradition. Plenty of outside seating on a sunny day.
J. H.
Excellent music at night with a large social beer garden in the street. The place is packed every time I go there, and even if I have to stand all night by the toilets I still come back again and again, it's that good.
F. W.
