M. G.We went here as a birthday brunch treat and the food was flawless. Really tasty and a good selection of dishes to choose from on the menu. The brunch deal was worth the money and I was glad they offer a specific number of drinks rather than a 'bottomless' deal. The cocktails were an exciting gimmick and the staff were really knowledgeable but the flavour wasn't quite there for us. If we went back, we'd probably opt for the non-alcoholic versions to change it up a bit.

The friendly staff put together flamboyant cocktails throughout which were as tasty as they were showstopping. Dry ice and flames galore.
The pork crackling is a standout and a must had as a snack.
L. L.Delicious food and drinks. It was fascinating to watch the bartenders make their cocktails. They probably use dry ice for most of their cocktails which creates amazing smoke effects.
The service was extremely slow though, we waited a good 25-30 min to order our food and drinks - not very impressed. However, the food was pretty good and was worth the wait.
The lamb chop was tender and the grilled chicken burger was delicious. The burger could do with a little more sauce though!
Overall, the ambience was fantastic and the service was friendly despite slow.
C. b.Love the atmosphere (super chilled) and cocktails are very different/unusual. It is VERY expensive though with almost all cocktails being approx £10. If prices were cheaper it would easily get 5 stars, but I suppose your paying for the 'premium' feel

P. L.As good as the pictures! Brilliant spectacle, and a real show. Flames, smoke and steam all infront of you as the drinks are being expertly thrown together!
However, you have to be prepared to wait for a drink or two.. I waited around 30mins or alittle more for two drinks, at the bar. Be prepared to pay alittle more, since this place brings quality, over quantity. Music is a alittle on the loud side at times..
I had a drink called the "gin bug" and... It was quite easily the nicest drink I've had, and probably worth the long wait.

J. B.So my brother and I visited this place a few days ago as we heard great things about it, we decided to try it for ourselves and was not disappointed. I, being a cocktail lover, thoroughly enjoyed the selection they had to offer, the bartender that served us was knowledgeable of the drinks on the menu as well as giving us recommendations. Before we left the place - I asked if she/they made their own, which they then provided with confidence. Absolutely returning again.
k. p.Went for some post meal drinks. The bar wasnt too busy but had a great atmosphere. We had 2 cocktails each which were both not only good to look at but tasted fantastic. We will definatley be going again.

Lighting is good for atmosphere but a nightmare for reading the menu and it's small print.
Toilets are a trek and you can easily end up in the staff break out room.
J. e.A pleasant venue that's appealing to the eye. The cocktails were enjoyable, however the chicken wings were bland. If you like chip shop chicken with a sauce added afterwards then you'll enjoy the wings. Secondly, the chips were slightly undercooked for my liking. However, the staff were so friendly, chatty and helpful and that adds to my review score.

T. C. (.Good cocktails and great Asian food. There are steps to the entrance, but they have a ramp available for disabled customers. The ramp is very long and not too steep, and also supports lots of weight (suitable for an electric wheelchair or mobility scooter.

F. D.Would highly recommend the Alchemist if you are a fan of cocktails and even if you aren't the food is brilliant too. They have a wide range of weird and wonderful cocktails, some of which have dry ice. It was so good we went there twice in one holiday.
A. P.My parents booked a mixology experience for my and my sisters birthday last weekend. We were a group of 10 and we all had the very best time!! The drinks were amazing, and we had a lot of fun getting involved with their creation; the food was interesting and delicious; and the experience was such a good laugh (we’ll be doing our ne na ne na bangs for life now)!
HUGE thank you to Paula. She not only showed us how to make the cocktails, she was welcoming and funny and she gave us a good insight into just how precise you have to be when making drinks at the alchemist. She made the experience for us.
d. m.Went for a birthday treat. The salt and pepper fries were to die for! Definitely worth the extra 75p with the burgers. We had the Cajun Halloumi burger and the chargrilled honey & sriracha chicken burger - both were tasty but paled in comparison to the fries. :-) We had the sweet gyoza for dessert and shared (1.5 gyoza each). Flavours were great and we especially liked the ginger puree, and the variety of textures on the plate.
We had four different cocktails with our meal: dry ice tea was fab (looked like tea thanks to the cola foam, and was just the right amount of sweet); dead red zombie was theatrical and very palatable; hipflask colada was refreshing but not as spectacular as the other drinks (tho I did get to keep the flask); and the chocolate orange smasherac was our least favourite 'dish' of the evening - it had a touch of theatre (think creme brulee) but didn't taste like any of the ingredients. I liked it when I had a tiny sip at a time, but my partner didn't fancy it at all.
Overall, it was a lovely evening. Thanks The Alchemist. :-D

E.Disappointed. Yes, you get a wow with some of the cocktails looking very theatrical but there were long queues at the bar, and the sizes of drinks seemed small in comparison to other venues, so did not represent good value. Table Service would have made this more enjoyable.

E. J.The staff at the Alchemist make it all worth while. The drinks are fantastic! Definitely fun to watch and very tasty. Must try the Zombie Apocalypse! Food however is okay, my partner had the chicken basket, which literally came in a chicken wire egg basket. We got confused, do we struggle to eat out of the basket, or do we have to get the food out and put it on the plate. Either way not a good idea to serve food this way and chicken was dry and tough. I had the salmon and it was cooked to perfection, the Asian vegetables was spring onion and bok choy. Could of though a little more here. One little hint, there is a whole world to very tasty Asian cooking, sweet chilli sauce from a bottle doesn't cut it. Saying that we booked a week ahead and their was only 12pm and 12.30pm bookings available. They were fully booked all other times. Which is good in my eyes. Atmosphere was lovely, great lighting and great background music. A real pleasure x

N. K.Came here a few weeks back for a Christmas menu dinner. The restaurant itself is stunning and very modern. The staff are polite. The food was a bit of a disappointment after the great reviews, the lobster bisque was very cold and the turkey goujons were very overcooked, however the fries were delicious. The dessert cocktails were okay but I wouldnt order them again. I'm willing to try food here again with the normal menu and see if there is an improvement.
S.Went there a year ago and had an amazing time but this year wasn't quite as good.
It was a shaky start when we were nearly refused entry because one of our party was under 18 even though we had booked for a family birthday meal and had to explain the situation to the rude bouncers who had just assumed we were going for drinks. Music was obnoxiously loud which wouldn't be a problem if it was actual music and not just mindless thumping which made having a conversation almost impossible. Service was slow - the restaurant staff were all really lovely but we did have to check up on our food/drinks a couple of times as it was taking almost an hour. Our starters arrived before our drinks so we had to pause eating in order to enjoy the theatrics of the drinks. Asked for a bottle of Chardonnay to be given the most expensive bottle on the menu without checking first so make sure you're specific 😂 Booked using the 50% off food in January deal on the website and had to ask for it to be added on too. Don't get me wrong we still had an amazing experience with the food and drinks but it just wasn't quite as good an experience as last time.

M. F.First time experience here. Very impressive. The first thing you notice is the Cool slightly macabre decor- right up my street! And waitresses carrying trays with dry ice bubbling over impressive looking cocktails. Theatrical and amusing All adding to the experience.
The food is as interesting as the cocktails. I Had the charcoal infused battered Cod and Chips. Which despite any worries tasted.....like Fish and Chips! But looked as Black as the Ace of spades. The novelty didn't outweigh the quality or taste. My girlfriend had a satay chicken salad, nothing particularly quirky. But tasty and enjoyed. She also ordered a key lime pie cocktail which had a flammed meringue topping. A little sickly after a while but initially very much enjoyed and awed over.
. Prices are as you'd expect in the heart of a city centre. And service faultless. If you want a little experience with your meal this is it.

Come for the food, stay for the cocktails. The food selection ranges from thai inspired dishes to burgers and chips, all presented in a cool quirky style. The food itself is tasty with big portions, but you are really here for the cocktails.
Served at your table, the vast range of cocktails includes drinks that will change colour, that will smoke out the table and that will taste great. Ideal for a fun night out with family of friends. (and ideal for Instagrammers!)
An eclectic soundtrack and great service make this an ideal place for a glamorous night out.
It is not the cheapest place but it is worth the pennies.

B. D.Arrived on Sunday at 1 PM, seated quickly and socially distanced. Very attentive staff and as one of our group had an allergy, they double checked all meals for our party. The food was abundant and excellent and the sharer plates generous. The wine and cocktail list was excellent and our party had wine and cocktails all excellent, served with Theatre. The atmosphere was great and the DJ playing funk and soul was excellent.. Only criticism was that the volume and bass in the restaurant was too loud for the group (and I'm a DJ) to talk normally and enjoy the experience, the zoning of the sound needs to be adjusted between the bar and the restaurant, also the sound in the restaurant was muddied with only low frequencies, are the speakers up to scratch ? That said, everything was excellent and we shall be returning for a repeat visit soon. If you don't like music with your meal, visit on any day except Friday, Saturday or Sunday

Food was a bit hit and miss and took a long time to arrive, but in my experience that tends to be the case with christmas parties everywhere.

However it was disappointing that quite a few cocktails were unavailable. The Cotton Candy Baked Alaska dessert was also unavailable, so really disappointed as it was the only 'theatrical' dessert, and it was also the only dairy free dessert (apart from scoops of sorbet). After having to wait weeks to book a table at the weekend, it is quite disappointing when alot of stuff on the menu isn't available.
H. R.Was a lovely meal, but just that lovely not outstanding. The drinks were fun but expensive. We did have a great time, but please be aware it does not have and accessible entry. They put a ramp on the steps - which makes it extremely steep.. I chose to walk up them, lots of people don't have that option. When mentioned I had the usual, it's the age of the building... not really good enough in 2021. They do have an accessible toilet however it is extremely dark in there with no way to get extra light, also doubles up as baby change. Overall a nice evening, will return for special occasions.

Having said that there are some very impressive smoking and unusual cocktails here. In essence if you want something different and an ‘event’ of a cocktail then this is the place; if you want a good standard cocktail such as an old fashioned or Long Island ice tea then there are other options around. 4 stars, definitely worth a look 😀

Unfortunately out of the 12 cocktails we sampled, only about 4 were genuinely good and worth ordering again. Not a great hit rate.
Overall, good idea, poor execution. That said I would still go again in the hope the drinks we didn’t try are better

G. D. J. S.I went with 2 friends for cocktails and was mostly very impressed! The staff were very friendly and attentive and conformed well to social distancing measures. They were very quick to respond and ensure we were having a good time, and the drinks came over quickly.
The drinks themselves were generally alright. The bath bomb was too much of a clash of flavours for me, but the bath bomb effect was satisfying and the drink was reasonable. The lightbulb moment was amazingly fruity and boozy with fantastic presentation and I would definitely have again! The Mad Hatter for 2 was excellent with fantastic presentation and fruity flavour which impressed us all (how can you go wrong with a bunson burner and dry ice) and my Cherry Poppins was delicious. I would avoid the Bitter Cherry Sours at all costs though as it may be the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted.
I am not sure if the drinks were worth the price as they were certainly quite expensive, but the experience and drama of the whole night certainly made up for it.

T. S. (.Firstly, original booking was lost luckily called up to confirm it and they didn't have it. I rebooked and still didn't receive any form of confirmation. Upon arrival they sat us near the bar to wait for our table and then had to come over again asking us "what time is your booking?" And "sorry we can't find your booking, what's the name again?". Not impressive service like you might expect from a place with such a good reputation.
The food menu is not extensive, it really does feel like pub grub upon reading. However each meal is expertly prepared and is delicious! 500% recommend the churros, best dessert on the menu.
The cocktails are obviously the show and dance of "the alchemist" and do not disappoint. Each one is delicious, strong and a feast for the eyes. Even the mocktails do not disappoint on the x-factor.

N. D.I'd never been to The Alchemist before however the 3 guests I was with had. I had a lovely first time experience and our server Grace was so helpful, had a wonderful personality and very bubbly. Always came back to check on how/what we were enjoying and really got involved in choosing what cocktails and shots we should get. There was one downside but that is not their fault in the slightest, 3 cocktails were unavailable but due to Welsh government restrictions stating from Friday (4 days away) hospitality sectors cannot sell alcohol for the foreseeable so its pointless buying stock that might not sell which is completely understandable. However Grace really personalised our experience and I would happily go back after the restrictions change. 100% would recommend going.

M. J.What a quirky venue this is. Never heard of it before. When we went in we stood at the little desk by the door. Could see staff in the distance but no one came over. I went to the bar and was told i had to go back and wait for a member of staff. Thankfully someone did come over and took us to a table. We were served by Ben who was very cheerful and friendly. The order came quickly and efficiently. The cocktails are fantastic, well worth a try. Food presentation was excellent. I had the spring rolls to start and chicken in a basket for main. It was nice however i wasn’t keen on the coleslaw due to the mustard but that’s my personal preference. All in all a good place to visit. If i were to be really picky, staff need to be ready for customers when they arrive, 1st impressions count as they say.

Be prepared to be lost in test tubes, petting dishes, conical flasks and billowing dry ice. This place must make a killing on social media mentions, every drink is worth a picture.
Also had a table booked in the restaurant area, table service from our waitress Sky was faultless, well informed and gave great recommendations on both the drinks and food. This place doesn't disappoint!

The rum cocktail i had was amazing, i only wish we'd had more time to explore more they had to offer; there are a lot!!! I loved the little descriptions on a lot of the cocktails referencing to how they are made. Mine in particular noted the final ingredient as 'fire' which i found intriguing and my god was fire involved. The making of the cocktails here are as much apart of the enjoyment as the drinking.

On the first visit we tried the new Conjurer cocktails which were great tasting, not just a gimmick but a lot of fun too. Cheeseboard with fancy crackers and cheese from the Cheese Pantry in the market is a very strong contender for the best cheeseboard I've had this year. New dish of pan fried trout was so light and easy to eat, tender and delicate fish with crispy skin, the most perfect side salad with that sweetness to it with the strawberries. Huge list of delicious starters, I recommend the halloumi, prawn dumplings and mac and cheese bites.
Service has been impeccable on every visit. The staff put you at ease, know a great deal about the extensive menu, and are very natural, professional and attentive. Seems the Cardiff branch have such a good thing going with the team, shout outs to Adam, Stephanie and Natalie who have helped make our last two visits such good fun and so memorable!!
Note - I've visited the Alchemist a few times this year, as both a paying customer and also in return for social media work (product in lieu of monetary payment). Everyone was just as attentive when I came for a collaboration as they have been during previous visits, there's been no difference in how I was treated and I wasn't asked to do a Google review.

Points to improve:
The toilets, although clean and in keeping with the theme, are almost down in the dungeons and the way there too dark. It needs to be lit for it to be found easier and just for it to be less unnerving to visit lol.
The cocktail menu seems limited: I don't think there were margaritas, cosmopolitans or lots of other known cocktails on the list. However, I did order a Pina colada and they did this for me, so I'm assuming you can order things off the menu and they'll do it for you.
If they are fully trained mixologists, I'm sure they'll be able to do this or consult a book rather than just do the cocktails on the list. I had a black jack, dead red zombie and mojito off the menu, which were all nice. I'm hoping to get my favourite next time, a mango daiquiri, but not sure if mango was on the menu.
The wait at the bar is sometimes long because they are so busy and because cocktails take time. The show they put on mostly makes up for this and the cocktails are lovely. However, when the wait gets to 15/20 minutes, you just want your drink really. I'd suggest ordering a few cocktails for you and the company you're with so you don't have to wait when you finish.

M. C.I recently had a staff night out and we popped into the Alchemist on my recommendation. I had been there a few times previous. I do like this place it's very modern and something new for Cardiff. We had a few different cocktails I had the solero which I do order every time I go in its my favourite. I also tried the "rum punch" which was beautiful and also gets a good bit of theatre at the bar while you're waiting, which brings me onto my next point you do wait a very long time for drinks here which aren't the cheapest. At one point I did wait 45 minutes for 3 drinks I'm think it's due to not enough people behind the bar and the drinks being so complex. I think if they did some sort of table service it could maybe speed the service up alot more. Atmosphere was buzzing all night everyone loved the theatre of the bar tenders and the drinks themselves. I would definitely give it a try but price wise it's definitely more pricey than most other places in Cardiff.

Today, Mike greeted me with a smile, inside the restaurant when I popped in to ask about an outside table. He brought me a printed card with the Covid-19 rules and QR code to open the virtual menu. My American phone doesn't handle these codes well (this one showed a sale of ladies hoodies) and he quickly brought me a paper menu. I was pleased because other venues where I've experienced the UK/American app clash have said too bad so sad we can't serve you. I read the menu completely and decided I was hungry for cheese burger, sans cheese and level up sauce. No problem! said Mike. Regular (rather than sweet potato) fries and mayo and ketchup on the side completed my order. The burger, looking gorgeous on a pretty platter shaped plate, was perfect. The fries were medium/small cut, just the way I like, so they're crispy on the outside, and tasty potato on the inside. Birra Moretti was my beverage of choice. All in all, the setting, the food, the service, an A1 experience I look forward to repeating soon.

Not somewhere you could go for more than one drink. Food menu looked rather limited too. Not sure how sustainable it is in the currently over-crowded bar market within Cardiff though.

T.Cocktails are admittedly expensive but there's no experience on the same level as the alchemist in Cardiff. The showmanship alone is something to go here for but their expansive knowledge of all things cocktail ensure a pleasant experience
