First time visiting and I'm looking forward to another excuse to book. Staff here were really friendly and they know how to make a great tasting cocktail. Unlike some places that rely solely on spectacle, Dead Canary offers cocktails that are value for money on both taste and novelty. Great location in Cardiff, not too crowded and clean toilets. Perfect.

Atmosphere inside is excellent, both moody and elegant. Decor goes perfectly with the bar scenes and cocktail menu. Both server and barman were great banter and knew the menu well, as well as their knowledge on alcohols! These men are not afraid of going above what's expected of them and I am grateful of them for making our night special. The cocktails themselves are high quality, the menu can seem tricky to navigate and understand, however our server explained the menu and that they also do all the classics too. The menu itself is so unique, having a page for each cocktail, as well as description of the cocktail, a story about the dragon and an illustration of it too, and what type of glass it will come in. Most certainly one of the must go to bars in Cardiff, I booked to come back again whilst I was in the bar!

Sick of over priced watery cocktails? This is the place for you. The creativity in every cocktail is second to none, each drink comes out with its own unique personality and packs a punch!! The adventure begins when you have to ring the bell outside an inconspicuous back ally door. The door opens and you're greeted by an enthusiastic staff member who escorts you to your table in what is a cosy bar decorated with an eclectic array of decorative items and quirky nik naks. You're given a menu, all dragon themed and the cocktails are names after dragons, each comes with a little story. Some of the most adventurous and beautiful cocktails I've ever seen I just wish I'd taken more pictures. We loved it, great atmosphere, great staff, great drinks, great experience.

Went here for NYE and I have to say the staff are incredible! The service is just outstanding, all the staff we're very kind, chatty and just couldn't do enough for us. I think Richard was serving us and he really was amazing, had a lot of knowledge on the drinks and let us know we could order practically anything we wanted, even if it wasn't on the menu! No long waits for another drink. The atmosphere was great, the drinks menu is amazing and the place itself just has an amazing vibe! Would definitely visit again, definitely a place to visit if your out and about in Cardiff!

Honestly, there are so many good things about this place - its hard to know where to begin. Wonderful atmosphere, polite/friendly staff, amazing presentation of the drinks and great music in the background (not too loud so you can still have a convo) There is currently a dragon themed menu, I won't give it away but the idea behind it is mythical and it really shows in the creative nature of the cocktails. One small thing, be prepared to pay that little bit more (£8-10) per cocktail - but believe me, it's worth it. Definitely recommend 5/5 stars.

Quite funny how we got to this place... while visiting Cardiff we randomly became friends with a Dutch guy and his mom at the bus stop while waiting for the bus to hike Pen-y-Fan. We even had a picnic together on the top and he said he knew of this 'secret' place that we could meet for a drink later that evening. And we did. He showed us this hidden place. To get inside the doorbell on the right hand side of the door must be rung, and a member of the team will then come to greet you and escort you into the depths of the bar and to your seat. From this point you are taken back in time to an era of jazz music, prohibited alcohol consumption and extravagant cocktails. What a gem of a Cocktail 🍸Bar!! Absolutely magical ✨

The Dead Canary was an extremely awesome concept. It is a “secret bar” that has no storefront logos. Instead, you have to book a reservation and knock on the door when you get there which makes the experience very cool. The menu was one of the best menus I have seen ever, it was a story which compromised of cocktails and gave very witty explanations of the cocktails which I loved. The drinks were too pricey for the quantity served and hence I did not give this a 5* rating. However, overall I would definitely recommend visiting for the experience!

My new favourite cocktail bar in Cardiff. The only 'speak'easy' bar in The Diff. If you can find the entrance, this place is well worth a visit. Fantastic selection of drinks listed ina storybook explaining the history of the place. Table service was excellent. Pricing is in keeping with other cocktail bars in the area. Drinks tasted very strong, which makes a nice change from the watered down versions you find in other bars. I loved the dark decor, dim lighting and armchair seating - gave the place a relaxed, homely vibe. Can't wait to come back once Prohibition ends!

Great place to surprise my new wife and she had no idea how cool or what it was until we got all the way inside. Drinks were beautiful and tasted delicious. Very hard to find if it's your first time. Back entrance with no signs, you got to ring door bell to gain entrance, you need a torch light to read menu and in my opinion the cocktails are more ice than alcohol, this place was recommended by a few people to us, so it might just be "not our thing" either way well played karma well played. I only give it 3 stars as I wanted the points. The alchemist is far better.

Had an amazing night here with my wife. First night off from our boy in a while and we chose a cracker! The guys running the place were lovely. The cocktails even lovelier. They do anything you could possibly want, their signature selection ‘here be dragons’ should all be tasted though. We’ll be back as there were some we didn’t manage.

Dead Canary has a section upstairs called the Death at Entrances- I'd never been to this bit before but was pleasantly surprised, these cocktails are more daring with their ingredients and the bartender is more than happy to alter the cocktail to your taste or change it completely if you disliked it! The only thing was that it was very quiet upstairs for a Friday night.

Came to this place on the final day of my stag to have a final drink to relax and reminisce over the past four days; what an incredible choice of venue it was! This is in my top ten favorite bars I have ever visited and I've done more than my share of drinking cocktails at bars. The drinks were all excellent. The concept for the menu is delightful. The staff were super charming. The aesthetics of the place are nice without trying too hard. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and chatting the staff up, but the table service seems an excellent option as well.

Hip, eclectic cocktail bar with extremely hospitable staff. Menus change regularly and are accompanied by hand drawn illustrations in the drinks booklet. Tip: The entrance is located on Barrack Ln; locate the building with a mural and "Fire Exit Doors", there will be a doorbell to buzz in for the location.

I love the level of attention given to each customer. You're given a warm welcome and each of the bar staff really know their way around the drinks, as well as being able to help you based on what you like. My only little gripe is whilst I know it's a speakeasy and it's all part of the charm, it is siiiightly too dark. Reading the drinks menu can be a bit of a strain. Considering you're buying cocktails in a city centre, prices are definitely reasonable, but it's not somewhere you'd go for a session. It's brilliant to go somewhere different for a drink or two after a meal or a gig. Especially if you know what's coming but what to give whoever you're with a bit of a surprise about how where you're going.

What an excellent experience!! Went here on a down toned stag doo. Booking required, but we were lucky to get a table after 2 hours of notification. Music was live, and really good consisting of a young man jamming on a guitar. Service was top notch. Cocktails the best, and original. Great experience for a special occasion. My friend took me for my birthday and did all the booking online. I have to admit I really had no idea where it was and you only see a couple of hints as you get closer. Currently visiting Cardiff for a few nights for my partners Birthday. I was scouring the net to find interesting places to drink at, and came across The Dead Canary. The place is a hidden gem. Decor is very cool and underground, the staff were amazing, and the cocktails were something else. Easily the best cocktails I have ever had. Period. The blend and assortment of herbs and spices used for the drinks was insane. Very good atmosphere and a fun place to go. If you're looking for something unique, I would suggest paying this place a visit.

Amazing little speakeasy bar. Tough to find if you haven't been there so definitely ask someone if your nearby but don't know how to get in. Table service and live music are wonderful, as are the cocktails though be warned that you need to book on a Friday or Saturday night and you're looking at cocktails starting at £8 and can be anywhere up to £12 for a drink. The quality is unmatched but it's easy to spend a hundred quid without even realising it. If you want a cheap night out this isn't the place for you, but if money's no object and you're looking for the coolest setting and the best cocktails in town, then look no further.

As you rock up to this venue, guided by a empty birdcage hanging above the door you realise the exclusivity of where you are entering. A simple ring of the door bell leads to a staff member with always a pleasant and welcoming manner beckoning you in. From there you are treated to one of the best customer service experiences I've ever felt. The staff knowledgeable about their profession and the drinks to die for. This speakeasy is up there with Cardiffs hotspots, I hope that it continues to achieve the greatness it has already set out, if I could more than 5 stars would be given, staff members known as - Fitz, Charlotte, Milky and everyone are a credit to the trade known as 'the industry'

Cocktail lounge had a great ambiance, and the decor matches the secret entrance in creating an almost speak-easy vibe. My partner and I went for the Archer evening and it was a really good time. The cocktails we great, and it had a really nice atmosphere. They even brought out some snacks relevant to the episodes. Overall it was a great deal for the event and I can't wait to visit again.

We were on our way to somewhere else, but I'd heard of the #TDCCDF quite a few times and my mate knew where the rather obscure entrance was. After a simple ring of the ordinary bell, in we went... to an oasis. The young lady at the door was accommodating, and we were seated quickly and efficiently, to enjoy the live music, which was, I must say, exceptional - offering smooth versions of wonderful songs on a ukulele and piano. What a treat... I have some video because the performance was that good. But the lighting is, let's say, no good for recording. The bar staff were attentive too and were happy to conjure up cocktails to a random list of preferred ingredients... I read this week that this was voted one of the top 10 bars in the UK. I can see why. I would highly recommend...

Awesome experience. Booked for 2 h, wish I would've booked for at least 4h.Was sat at the bar, best option to be honest as you could interact with the barteneder. Only ordered 2 cocktails from the menu, for the rest we've told the barteneder what drinks and flavours we like and he created right there some gorgeous drinks. The bartender was great and prepared the drinks with style. We've had some great great drinks. Absolutely loved it ! I've read, out of curiosity some 1* reviews to see why people would complain about this place, and my conclusion is this : If you are a cheap ass who doesn't want to spend 2-3 extra £ for quality drinks , if you're some obnoxious prick who complains about being too dark or if you don't understand that you need booking and that you need to stay on the dot the time you've booked to be there then don't go ! This place is not for you ! Otherwise , you'll have a great time.

The whole 'hidden venue' thing seems a bit pretentious on the face of it so I was wary of my first visit when a friend had to book a table. The idea of booking a table at a bar seemed even more pretentious but I was pleasantly surprised. You realise that it's all a bit of fun in the name of doing something a bit different, especially when you meet all the friendly and distinctly unpretentious staff. Great ambience. Very 'cool' atmosphere and incredibly low lighting. I wasn't drinking so I can't speak for the cocktails personally, but everyone else loved them. Drinks aren't what you would call 'cheap' but they don't feel like rip off prices given what's involved. Everyone felt that they probably spent no more than they would on a regular night out but had far nicer drinks than they would normally have. Live piano performance through the evening added to atmosphere and everyone was able to have a civil conversation without shouting like in most bars and not a TV screen to be seen. Staff were very attentive and helpful; nice to have table service and settling up with a bill rather than queuing at a bar like some sort of animal. I personally had some nice coffee and a great evening. Late night opening suited me and leaving around 3am felt civil and not rushed. Definitely give it a try but if you plan on a Friday or Saturday night, you really should book. I'll be going back soon.

Just make sure you check out some photos of the entrance first so you know where you're going! Four of us spent a good few hours sat at the bar getting one of the most exhaustive overviews of Whiskey I've ever had from the barman Todd. A guy who definitely knows his way around the spirits on offer, his and indeed all the staff's good nature and knowledge was a fantastic accompaniment to the brilliant selection of cocktails and spirits in offer.
