Best overall pub in my view in the centre of Colchester - great selection of craft beers from around the country / world as well as their own microbrewery on site. Good vibe throughout the week, maybe a bit too crowded on a Fri / Sat night but that’s only a consequence of its success. Food is decent for sharing on a night out but it’s not gastropub level. Gin bar downstairs adds a different dimension at the weekends when it is open. Tap room (pictured) is great for a relaxed pint during the week

First of all it’s dog friendly and any place that brews beer on site is usually a goto for me… these guys are doing just that in the city centre of Colchester, but also have a huge space for seating and a great menu! We were there at lunch, and I’d love to return at night to see the difference vibes!

We are definitely coming back here soon! The food, drink and service are fantastic. We had a southern fried chicken sandwich, a Korean bbq chicken burger, soy, ginger&honey chicken wings with extra coleslaw! All was delicious, couldn't fault any of it. Also tried a stout from the brewery adjacent to the restaurant, well worth a visit. I would love to try the Gin bar downstairs soon. We will be back soon

Great bar with local Other Monkey beer as well as world beer favourites and lots of spirits/gin variety. Didn't use the upper floor restaurant but the food menu looks good to help while away some supping time. Decked out in a stripped back you can see the brewing equipment type of manner, very nice relaxing environment.

Very nice place. I had the meat combo and it's very good (and HUGE!!!). A suggestion here: they consider that pulled pork must go with tomato sauce, so if you rather believe that tomato sauce kills the taste of pulled pork tell them in advance. Those with me who had burgers said they are fantastic. On the other hand, burgers get a fair share of the menu, so if you are not ok with them you may find the choice a bit limited. Beer is also good, and the personnel is very, very nice. Interesting also the fact that they have a large room upstairs, so you may consider this place for parties with some tens of people.

Really enjoyed this pub. They have a wide selection of beers and ales. What impressed me the most was the food. They had a few vegan options, my partner and I had two different dishes and we both thought were delicious. We will certainly be coming back.

Some how there is just no atmosphere you would expect to find in a bar of this type. On a reasonably busy lunchtime the staff not especially welcoming and saw a couple of groups come in and leave again. The menu is basic as befits the bar, but tasty enough. Tried the Tap room next door and about the same. In summary could do better with more effort.

Great to see a busy venue!! Wonderful view post COVID. Gin bar has an extensive menu but is quite a dark and claustrophobic atmosphere I found. Staff an absolute delight. Could do with a second till as queues were long, heard a few moans and groans from waiting patrons.

Had dinner here last weekend. Was a nice place with reasonable prices. Had good recommendations for the bottomless brunch but haven't done that yet. One of our party got the ribs and they were not too good. My meal was tasty - had tenessee burger. Large menu with plenty of variety. Mohitos were poor and pretty undrinkable. Those two problems the reason for 4 stars, everything else nice. Service was quick but very quiet upstairs as it was very early in the day

Three Wise monkeys was a fab looking place, order placed via the app, simple enough, extensive drink menu. We only wanted snacks so had two bowls of fries.... varied age groups which made three 40 somethings feel comfortable. the only downside for me was the cheerie disposition of the staff!! I do mean this ironically as they looked like they had just attended a wake, (my apologies if of course they had, but being a Saturday unlikely)maybe I'm getting a bit old or long in the tooth but the occasional smile wouldn't have gone a miss 😉😆

Not very comfortable for lunch. I think its great as a bar ,out with friends. Didn't think much of menu. But went with dirty fries. It's OK... Couldn't find toilet ,not well signed. Mum couldn't do the bar code scan menu but managed to hunt down paper menus.

A bit disappointed to be honest, the food was very average, especially for the price, I found myself wishing I’d waiting until after to go get McDonald’s instead, also the bar person only put through half my order, I asked her to check in because the price was too low but she said she’d put it all through so I paid, then she had to come to my table to get me to pay for another part because it hadn’t been put through probably, and another bar tender (blue hair) had a drink froth up, she when wiped the nozzle with her hand that she’d just picked up dirty glasses with, then continued to poor the drink, putting the now dirty nozzle right into the drink… then handed it over with her fingers on the rim of the glass. The atmosphere of the quiz and the efforts put into it was the redeeming quality, but we were booked in for our quiz table at 6pm (told we could arrive early for food), then told we’d actually booked in for our table downstairs and couldn’t go up until later (despite the email say “quiz booking”), so we’d all rushed from work to make it for this quiz booking for no reason.

A nice place with large selection of drinks. They also have a small food menu which is OK. Burgers in past have been nice, but on most recent visit had the meat combo of jerk chicken and pulled pork. Chicken was a bit on the dry Side... There is seating both downstairs and upstairs and can get fairly busy.

In town for a 3 day class and went out on a whim and found a gem. The food was good. It said texas style but it wasn't. Still tasty. Great crowd of all ages. Small bar on ground level. Restaurant on first level, and live music on top floor. I would recommend coming here for a night out.. drinks were also decently priced.

Great pub. Nicely designed interior with slight American vibe. Our meal was pretty spectacular: chicken burger delivered on quality and flavour (although was bit on the salty side), Cajun fries and slaw. Sampler of 4 1/3 pints for £6 is a nice touch. Two meats with sides would easily serve 2. All served with no plastic, including sauces in jars and bottles. Well done. ♻️

Very disappointing. We were asked to leave a deposit and pre order our food. The starters arrived and we had no service at the table after over an hour I had to ask where our mains were after another 30 minutes the food came which wasn’t hot. We advised the staff of this and to their credit they made a very generous recompense to the bill. Having eaten there before it was unusual to have a bad service, however their customer service was exceptional and they clearly care about their reputation. On the basis of the after service we will try them again. Thank you TWM for being so reasonable about the issues.

Sixteen beers on tap, plus up to six beers served from pumps. Beer is well kept, but sold a little above average prices for Colchester. The pub is very popular and has a clientele which is younger and more affluent than is true of many Colchester pubs. It is a fine addition to Colchester's good pubs.

A good place for a few drinks and to experiment with something different - I tried the Mongozo Coconut wit bier. Refreshing and definitely something for the summer. We ordered using the app which worked well. The downside was having to chase 10 days later for the refund of the £10 table deposit.

Our second visit to this venue to see a live band, this time a Duran Duran tribute... Once the sound had been sorted ( about 5 songs in) they were very enjoyable... could really have done with a 5th member & a it more effort with some more stage wear & get rid of the 2 beards but otherwise an enjoyable night with most hits played well & a few other peoples 80s dance classics thrown in...Let's Dance & Le Chic to name two... Were they worth the £17.50 door price I think probably about £12 would have been right.. 😉

A girl loves a cocktail or three & this is a very nice place to enjoy them! The food is also extremely good & I do highly recommend you try this place. They have a menu that has starters, mains etc & you are not burdened with lots of choices either. They also do have specials on like their 2 meats special recently, which I had myself & omg it was delicious. Three Wise Monkeys have a wide range of drinks, varying from soft drinks to wines, from beers to spirits. You are spoilt for choice here. Also DO try out their gin bar, oh wowsers a girl could loose herself in their range of gins!! It's a fantastic night out in Three Wise Monkeys, hope to see you there maybe. Really cool, quirky place and good aircon on a hot day. Really friendly staff and a great beer selection. Food was outstanding best slow cooked beef brisket I've ever had, missus had the vegan burger which she really enjoyed. Menu has something for everyone, very fairly priced too. Few different floors with different bars and a smoking area to the side. Highly recommend checking it out.

This is our favourite place in Colchester. Amazing BBQ food, an incredible beer selection, and superb service from the staff. You need to try their Lemon & Pepper Chicken Wings - absolutely out of this world! Always a lovely atmosphere and the staff are really welcoming and friendly. It is dog friendly which is great. Love the decor too. One of the best bars in Colchester.

When the chicken burger arrived, the lack of chicken was quite underwhelming... not sure where the other half of the chicken breast went? A friend's nacho cheese had gone hard and therefore difficult to eat a whole block of nachos in one, most likely as it sat waiting for rest of the food to be cooked before it was served. Atmosphere is always pleasant, but the food service let it down considerably.

There's even an option for a tasting rack of small beers (or ciders and lagers) at a reasonable price. And if beers aren't your thing - the American smoked style menu is awesome. The flavours and meats are fantastic, the menu (recently expanded) gives a range of tasty options - but do bear in mind it's fairly meat heavy though. The staff are friendly and the general feel of the bar is one that's laid back and easy. Friends, families and board games being played is the order of any one day. The Three Wise Monkeys is easily my favourite eating and drinking establishment in Colchester.

They are understaffed - which place isn't these days? - but they still pull it off and with a smile. As a vegan, I was very happy with the menu choices (although some vegan desserts other than sorbet wouldn't go amiss) and the toddlers were happy with their stuff. As somebody else has already mentioned, this place enjoys a diverse group of clientele and a lot of always smiling faces. Try the Blue Moon Belgian Ale for an alcoholic bevvie.

I would like to express my gratitude for the level of professionalism demonstrated by the members of staff at 3WM Colchester. Since reopening in July, my partner and I have enjoyed visiting during the week. That being said, it is important to note that on account of self-isolating due to lockdown, his disability has made it very difficult for him to move around without the aid of a wheelchair and there have been moments that have been extremely difficult for him when we have been out in public. As his partner and carer, I am particularly sensitive to how he is treated by others. On one occasion a few weeks ago, during one of our first times out since March, my partner found himself in extreme pain due to his condition. We happened to be at 3WM at the time. The members of staff on duty that day were immediately attentive and rose to meet his need, providing us with ice, and the space necessary to attend to the severity of the situation whilst impressively maintaining all social-distancing measures set out by management. Words cannot express how grateful I was for the staff that day when my partner was struggling and I was helping him. On another more recent occasion, when visiting with my partner's daughter, she tripped over her shoes and fell, and in the process broke two of her toes. Again, this was another moment when the staff at 3WM went above and beyond expectation in regards to making sure her needs were met. They immediately got her up, sat her in a chair, and made sure her foot was propped up comfortably with ice. Further, a taxi was booked for us and the staff made sure all of our needs had been met prior to leaving the venue that evening. The reason why I am so impressed by the quality of care and attentiveness expressed towards us by the staff and management at 3WM is two-fold. First, while both of these incidents happened, the staff maintained all regulations set out by management due to Covid-19. Secondly, because the response towards us stands out as exceptional when compared to treatment we have received whilst dining out at another local venue in Colchester that is known for its extensive wine menu and upscale lounge. The fact that my partner's disability has become more challenging for him due to self-isolating makes the treatment he receives by staff at the venues we visit particularly poignant. In light of this, it has become apparent just how superior the training is for the staff at 3WM. Out of the venues we have visited since the reopening of hospitality in July, the staff at 3WM have proved an absolutely exceptional commitment to making their business and social distancing measures as successful as possible. Further, their ability to treat members of the public with the right level of care and attention during critical moments proves that the quality of their training and running of their business is absolutely top-quality. In short, the level of service we have received at 3WM Colchester since reopening has been world-class. You cannot find better quality of service in Colchester, particularly in comparison to other local venues that may be more pretentious. I am extremely grateful for the level of compassion and respect that have been demonstrated towards my partner, his daughter and myself during these moments. I cannot stress enough how invaluable the members of staff at 3WM are towards making us feel included, valued and welcomed at your establishment. It is absolutely vital that the staff at 3WM, who have played a significant role in making my partner and I feel welcome, are acknowledged for their hard work towards the success of your business.

A few years ago, I feared that Colchester was spiralling into a night life of dismal pubs and bars with little to chose from. At last, the Three Wise Monkeys opened, a saving grace for the people of Colchester. This is a tastefully decorated pub with a rustic theme, steering away from the monotonous look a lot of bars/pubs have. There's a fantastic drinks menu ranging from spirits to real ales on tap, not to mention a basement with a dedicated gin bar. They provide entertainment for all with comedy clubs and live music. Not only is this a great place to enjoy some entertainment and have a drink, they serve amazing food too! Compared to Skyrooms (which was a bit of a dive) Three Wise Monkeys is absolutely awesome.

We ordered beef ribs and a Cesar salad. The first surprise came when the server asked us if we'd like to add chicken to the salad for £3. Of course, we agreed as there's no Cesar salad without chicken. The second surprise was when the "salad" arrived: 2 lettuce leaves, a few other tiny bits of greens, 4 quite large slices of very dry stone cold chicken with a a tiny bit of mayo. Additionally, the coriander they used overpowered every other flavour. Frankly, when I order a salad, I expect a salad... The beef ribs were excellent, although I expected more for £18. It has to be said that the staff asked for feedback and knocked 25% off the price of the salad when we explained why were not happy. All in all, if you're looking for a place to drink and eat meat, it seems to be a good place to go, but not if you want to have a proper meal.

The Three Wise Monkeys in Colchester is a modern styled pub, the ground floor is the tap house. When I visited there where 22 boards with beers from around the world. My choice was House Party, an American style Pale Ale, from the Norwegian brewery Lervig, pretty tasty too. One of my pet hates, (for a myriad of reasons) is the throwing of empties into the bottle bin, TWM are experts at this, I mean, really expert. Having said that, I do keep returning as it is one of the best pubs In Colchester.
