Reviews of The Exeter Arms
J. S.
Second visit to this fantastic pub/restaurant. Onion soup this time and like the minestrone it was exceptional. I followed this up with the kebab main. Really recommend this place and I can't wait to visit again. Friend had a prawn starter followed by pies. He agreed the food and service was fantastic.
J. G.
This hidden gem of a public housing is just a stone's throw from town. Super staff and quality food. Real ale lovers paradise. Recommend booking regardless of what day it is. 👍
C.
Good food, good beer, good staff. Wonderful pub with a decent clientele
M. B.
What a place to enjoy a drink and the food is just fabulous! Not to leave behind the so helpful and friendly staff. Definetly my favourite place to come back when in Derby again.
J. S.
Lovely pub and eatery. Stand and have a pint in this lovely bar or sit and eat and drink. This is a well maintained traditional style pub. Lots of choice to drink served by warm, funny friendly staff. We sat and I had minestrone soup then steak. The soup is hands down the best I've ever had. The steak was a great cut and cooked to perfection. We sat in the doorway talking to a local with his dog, really friendly chilled out guy with a west Ireland terrier, lovely little dog. Turned out he owned the place. Food service was absolutely spot on. Talkative, helpful and friendly. The staff here are a credit to the place, also why so many people are and drank here. Thank you Exeter arms.
B. M.
Great food and a wonderful atmosphere. Of course the beer is good as well.

Lunch time 11/1/22. Great atmosphere, excellent selection of drinks, great food at very reasonable prices, fabulous staff, highly recommended.
M. O.
Really great little pub. Fabulous food... Freshly made scotched eggs! Soft shell crab started was delicious!
The service was exemplary, helpful, kind, the right level of chat and business.
Big fan and will be back soon!
M. P.
Food was lovely and staff were helpful and friendly (even let our booking run over slightly when it was busy). There was a wait on food but that's cause it was before derby vs Fulham, so completely understandable.
Great little gem of a pub and nachos are banging 👌
S.
Excellent historic hostelry, had tried to visit on our last visit but was rammed. Entering it feels small but walking in with the compact bar to your right there is seating everywhere and it feels so welcoming. This is an excellent Pub and very well run. The staff are friendly and efficient the Ale is well kept and well served. They have a good choice of Ales in excellent condition. We were particularly keen to try one but it ran out. Only a few ounces in the glass but the barman was happy to let us taste it. Mainly Dancing Duck beers (but who in their right mind would complain about that?!) The Ay Up was great, Dark Drake & Waitangi were exceptional. This is an Ale House of character, to my shame I have yet to try their food but I saw some served up which looked excellent and was very well received. I will definitely be back as soon as is practical.

Visited today, lived in derby my whole life but have never been in. Great friendly atmosphere and very polite and helpful staff. The food was great with a special mention for the wings, I am a wing man and these are up there with the best I have had.
Definitely returning soon

Call me harsh but I wasn’t blown away by this pub. The service was excellent (very polite and considerate staff members). However, the food was a little lacklustre. I ordered “The Chippy”, which was £14 btw, and it lacked any real flavour. Disappointed as I could have walked to a chip shop nearby and got better quality food for half the price. That being said, dessert was delicious (I recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding). All in all, a cute pub to have a drink and dessert at, but wouldn’t come here for a full meal again (your bank account will thank you).

Been here lots of times, always faultless, but having obviously not been in winter, was so disappointed having to eat in the back room where it was freezing. I never took my coat off, so we booked for the six of us again but in the other room, when we got there we were again put in the back room, being told they had set the other room for 13, well we had booked first, so again we had to eat in the cold, we were given blankets but not the same, the staff were lovely and the food was great but it was all spoilt by the fact that we were cold, so no way could we relax and enjoy, all in all a very disappointing two visits to a place that have always loved.
G. C.
Did not expect to enjoy this meal so much. I like the option to choose chips or soup. The food was such good value for money and they havnt skimped any anything. I would definitely recommend and visit here again! Havnt had a meal that's shocked me in a while and this was fantastic! Nice beers on tap and a very relaxed vibe.

Perfect venue if you are looking for a small wedding party
The food was absolutely amazing they did everything we wanted including of menu
All the staff couldn't off been more helpful and made out day so so special
Y. S.
The exterior doesn't do it justice. A warm welcoming pub with a good selection of beer and drinks as well as very well cooked food. I heard positive things and am glad we gave it a chance. We will be back.
D. D.
Splendid beer, particularly the Dark Drake; the food (Sunday roast) matched nicely. We booked by email without difficulty, and they accommodated a group of us including a baby.
L. F.
Great food.
Great atmosphere.
Amazing staff.
L. R.
This place is great.
I love the menu choices, the food is yummy & theres a great selection of beers.
Staff are always super friendly.
A. H.
4 stars is just for the cod cheeks whoever did this recipe needs a medal..so so tasty..the Sunday roast I would of liked to have a thicker more tasty gravy and some mash instead of new potatoes but the meat and Yorkshire was nice .
J. J.
Lovely pub in the city center. Good food and a great selection of real ales. Covered outdoor seating as well as cosy indoor rooms
J. H.
Lovely food and great friendly service. The indoors has a nice traditional English pub feel, with lots of divided and cosy areas to eat or drink at
Y. H.
Old fashion style of pub inside
A lovely little gem. Beer kept well and food is amazing
We had the faggots mash and peas and fish and chips
Reasonably priced
You'll need to book a table if you are planning on going after 6pm
About 20 mins walk from Derby Station
Will be back again
T.
Food was OK but we waited a long time for it. The pub has a great atmosphere and staff are friendly and welcoming.
M. B.
Superb real ale selection with a few quality craft beers available in the battle fridge.
Great home-cooked food menu available. I recommend the sharing bucket of chips.
J. G.
First time visitors. Good value delicious meals. Friendly staff. Classic old city centre pub in a prime location. Distancing respected given tables far apart and a spacious outside covered patio area. You can now elect to eat in the nearby Market Place c/o Council facilities.
V. Y. E.
We had an excellent Sunday Roast here. Best one I've had so far. Beer selections are very good too. Staff were friendly! Although, there was a bit of problem when they accidentally charged us with a wine bottle we never ordered, it was right away solved and refunded us in an instant. All in all excellent still. Highly recommended!

The Exeter Arms, which is located on the edge of Derby city centre, is a real ale pub (Dancing Duck is the house brewery) well known for its well-kept beers and cozy, old-fashioned interior (exactly the opposite of another highly regarded beer bar, The Tap, which is more hipster-ish and close by). I visited the place last year for drinks only, and for that I can wholly recommend it. The Dancing Duck beers though tend to be on the low-ABV side and can be quite watery and thin, but there are other ales available, too, like the outstanding Thornbridge Jaipur (though at UKP 5.30 a pint it's quite pricey here!). This time I also had dinner - based upon many recommendations on the web.
Maybe I just picked the wrong option, "The Toulouse Sausage" - which turned out to be three very small, very tasty red win, garlic sausages. Alas, the presentation was lacking (see photo) - and the cabbage not well cooked and not pretty. The lentils were all right though.
Bar staff are very friendly and helpful indeed.
P. D.
Haven't been since the back room has been opened up, great idea. Had a lovely meal for my husbands birthday, then sat and had a couple more drinks in one of the intimate rooms, very relaxed and laid back atmosphere.. Great, real pub, as a pub should be.
w. t.
Nice place, cool choice of drinks in cask & draught. Really cheap price. Sweet staff n great service. Superb atmosphere as outdoor seatings at the edge of river Derwent. So peaceful timer here. Recommended

Wow, what a pub. If you like a traditional pub experience without the pings n bongs of modern technology, this is definitely a place to visit.
The beers are excellently kept, the food is quality pub standard at a reasonable price.
Bar staff was polite and friendly.
You would be daft to miss this one
B. E.
A bit of a survivor, dispite the surrounding area being all but abandoned the Exeter is outstanding.
Good choice of spirits, wine and excellent cask beer there's also a fridge with modern craft beer including some fairly high end stuff.
The food is really good, far above typical pub food it's restaurant quality.
Probably one of the most quirky pubs in Derby it's basically multiple small rooms and a single bar.
There's also a conservatory and beer garden.
Well worth a visit.
I. B.
Very popular pub with all ages and races. Really friendly atmosphere and lots of different styles going on in each room. Wide selection of gin from all over the place and I also counted 17 beer taps on the real short bar!! If that wasn't enough to tickle your taste buds, then there's a load of craft beer cans and a good selection of soft drinks. They even had two types of ginger beer and ginger ale!
M. R.
This is a stand alone Quality pub, despite being surrounded by a plethora of very decent real ale pubs in Derby (oddly most on the North side of the city) this really is one of the best pub experiences Derby has to offer. Comprised of several atmospheric rooms, dark wood panelling and hidden away down a side street. The food is excellent. It is very popular at weekends and Sundays if you're looking for something to eat you had better book as it is very popular. Live music most Summer weekends and occasionally Winter ones as well. Enjoy. M
M. C.
Amazing food, great selection of beer and right on the edge of town. First visit but definitely not our last.
A. D.
Stopped here on a pushbike ride, recommended by some locals for the food.
Yes the food is good... Fantastic,
Allowed us to take the bikes through the pub to get to the beer garden.
Thanks for the hospitality, the great food and service and the drinks.
Would definitely recommend this place.
Thanks 5 ⭐

What a wonderful addition to the Derby beer scene! Really come on leaps and bounds in recent years and hopefully long may it continue.
Not only do they offer multiple beers from Dancing Duck but the selection of craft beer on keg as well as bottles and cans is utterly superlative. Well-kept and served by friendly, knowledgeable staff who are keen to make recommendations and offer samples this is a must call when in Derby.
Cannot recommended highly enough.
A. J.
Have been absolutely blown away by the food! Fantastic service and great food! Best positive surprise from Derby!
P. S.
Lovely traditional pub, good vibes and beautiful food! Well worth a visit!
J. R.
Lovely traditional pub, really friendly and accommodating staff and amazing food. Only reason for 4 stars is that I ordered the 3 pies and chips, and the chicken in one of them was quite pink. The manager was very understanding and gave me and my partner a drink on the house and knocked a bit off the bill. I think it was a one time mistake and I'm happy to give this pub 4 stars due to the exceptional food and staff, will be going again.
P. D.
Great pub food and a good selection of Real Ales and craft beers.
D. P.
Nice pub plenty of good ales and places for small groups to sit throughout.
d. l.
Proper pub in the city centre. Good friendly staff who know their beers. Great selection on the pumps and a great night spent. The locals in Derby were so friendly and we won't miss the chance to visit again. Traditional pub at its best.
J. F. (.
Just outside the city centre The Exeter is another ye olde style pub with 5-7 real ales. Although quite dark inside its really qwerky with little pockets of seating in different areas of the pub. Nice rustic features and very welcoming. Another one of to return to.
D. P.
Lovely pub with a great selection of beers. Has a nice feel about the place and the staff are very friendly. A bit out of the way and parking not great. Worth a visit for sure.
D. H.
Nice staff, generous portions, food is ok,if Nik picking food is not hot all the way right through, uneven. But overall good Sunday lunch.
E. P.
Food is spot on and the staff are all lovely. Went for a few beers and a meal and never felt more welcome.
R. W.
Very good from start to finish . A nice friendly greeting, table booking acknowledged, shown to our table, lovely. Much better than your average pub fare, excellent halloumi in battery, great chips, tasty fish stew, excellent beer (dancing duck/ blue monkey). Excellent staff.

Nice pies, pints and a perch with a pal - not quite sure how I managed all the pies though!

M. S.
Good selection of Real Ales.
Great scotch eggs.

Lovely pub! We googled "best pub in Derby", this one came up, and it lived up to our expectations.
I definitely recommend checking out this place!
R. S.
My partners meal was sent back twice, once for missing item then because it was cold when she got it.
The staff member was very good though, beers are also very good and always have been. Our office is close by so have been here many times over the years.
A. P.
Fantastic place and easily a favourite. Always a great choice of beer, much of which is from the local Dancing Duck brewery. The food is highly recommended, with plenty of choice and the menu is often varied. The 'chip tank's' are something to behold.
Staff are always very amiable, sociable and helpful and the Covid measures currently in place are all as should be.
Highly recommended.
J. R.
Nice pies, pints and a perch with a pal - not quite sure how I managed all the pies though!

Great place to visit. We travelled from Stoke. We had a lovely meal here and they have a great selection of real ales. I strongly recommend the three pies that they do....absolutely amazing.
L. B.
I visited just for drink and was really impressed by the lovely friendly bar staff and the choice of ales. The service was friendly and attentive and didn't have to wait too long to be served . Overall a very pleasant evening spent in a lovely pub.
J. H.
Only dropped off beer very popular pub

Great pub with a varied selection of beers. Their dirty chips are one of the best pub meals ever.
A. F.
Absolutely amazing food. Some of the Best pub grub I've ever had. 5 stars 🌟

Great food, great beer, great atmosphere - what more could you want? And the staff are pretty good too. Well worth a visit.
D. S.
Great food, inventive and varied Manu, good beer and superb service.

We were recommended this pub and were not disappointed. Really lovely little pub with lots of quirky bits and pieces.
My husband chose the Braised Oxtail Lasagne which was absolutely delicious and very filling served with a side salad. I had the Woodmans Chicken served with salad and real homemade chips and the most devine coleslaw ive tasted in a long time.
We will definitely be back when we next visit and thank you for a really enjoyable meal.
g. a.
Really nice place! The location is not far, 5' from the city center. The inside was really pleasant with brick walls, wooden tables and a warm yellow light. They offers I wide range of really good beers. Followed by a typical pub menu which awesome burgers, tasty fries and an incredible variety of dishes. I order a lamp with was slowly awesomely cooked SUPER TASTY!!! and to finish with everything the desserts... My mouth makes water thinking about them (special recommendation to order the brownie). Go to the Exeter arms if you want to have a delightful evening.
A. L.
Excellent pub ,top food and great beer.very nice staff.
J. S.
Our fave place. Amazing staff ,who recognised us as we walked in despite the gap in going. Beer was spot on. Food was hot and tasty. Well worth a visit.
Q. E.
The venue is very attractive, the owners, father and daughter, are highly skilled chefs, you can taste their passion for high standard "cuisine", prices are very reasonable for the quality, the food I ate was to die for, and the jovial hospitality of the owners is the cherry on the cake, in despite of all the Covid regulations which are strictly observed at this place (not that this matters much to me). This great Pub restaurant deserves 10 stars.
D. S.
It's one of the best for Good beer and great food. It's not fine dining but seriously good pub food. It's my happy place
K. O.
Brilliant beer and range of drinks, food was superb and staff were rely friendly and welcoming to all of us and the 2 dogs. Hope to go back sometime!
J. “. B.
I went there last Friday for a meal for my birthday the meal was very good the conservatory was very dirty had cobwebs through it, could do with a lick of paint also I had to pay at the bar the barman kept me waiting for 10 minutes and then I said can I pay my bill now please my friends are waiting outside all 4 of I was the only one there with a mask on there is so many people and I felt intimidated for wearing a mask but also very safe I think people should wear the mask in public places like pubs restaurant and shops to keep Britain safe and free from germs
C. W.
It's always cold in there! Food is ok don't find the staff very friendly
j. h.
If you like beer and railway memorabilia you'll love this place
A. B.
Excellent Friendly Staff, doing a Fabulous job under current COVID conditions.
Great Atmosphere, and lovely quaint pub. With some great Music playing.
The meal we had was superb, and we’ll definitely be back in the future. 😉😁😁😁
S. W.
Excellent food great atmosphere and helpful staff in lovely surroundings
T. B.
Top drawer stuff. Menu have a traditional feel but it's for the modern palate. A must for foodies.
R. C.
Excellent beer range in traditional street corner local. Food looks good but didn't have time to try
B. D.
Great atmosphere. Lovely food
L. M.
A lovely pub! We had a delicious meal here and the beer was great too. It was really busy, but there was no problem getting served at the bar. The food came quickly and the portion sizes were very generous. We visited the next night for a drink in their courtyard which was very relaxing. Highly recommended!
R. C.
Very nice food, nothing sophisticated but some great comfort dishes, and the atmosphere is really lovely. There is a nice selection of local beers too. The staff are friendly, if somewhat distracted.
Good sized portions, a roaring fire, and the pub is decorated in a cosy style from a bygone era. It is a place well worth checking out.
V. H.
Very nice, traditional public house type of place. Obviously quite popular with the local populace as well. It was quite crowded and welcoming in terms of atmosphere - just what was needed on a cold winter's night.
There's plenty of 80s music on the speakers. Some nice local brews as well. The food menu is quite extensive in terms of variety though small in number of items. But every dish is pretty large in terms of serving.
They do pub quizzes and host literary events.
A. T.
The Exeter arms has been around for years, the beer was great, the food was brilliant and the service was very good. I will definitely go back again and will recommend it.
R. F. G.
Great food and beer. The whole experience is really good in 'covid' times. You are met on entry by a team member who explains everything to you. You give a few details and then head to your seat. To order food or drink just one person is allowed to go up to the bar. If you want to set up a tab you get table service. The menu is excellent (as before) and the beer is some of the best in Derby. The whole outing felt very safe and I would highly recommend. Only slight improvement would be the provision of drinks menus.
L. M.
Quirky pub, relaxing vibe, food amazeballs!
K. L.
Lovely place to sit and relax. I found this pub while just going for a walk. Next time I'm in Derby this will be my first port of call.
A. M. C.
Lovely place delicious meal rather expensive but good for a treat. Nice beer too ..Staff very polite and hard working
F. W.
Cask Ale at it's best!

First time here, but definitely not the last time. Very friendly staff and atmosphere. Can't wait to come back with the Family.
R. O.
Lovely atmosphere and great drinks.
G. K.
Really lovely pub, amazing staff. Perfect place for a quiet Sunday outing in the back garden, a place with many good alcoholic drinks but also tea and coffee. I'll definitely will be back with a book for some tea!
C. A.
Lovely pub food and drinks are great,ps the staff are 1st class but don't tell them.
I. D.
Great beer, great food and great service in a lovely pub. If you're in Derby you to need to check it out. 👍
S. H.
Good service ,great food you can pre-order your meal before your booked date , deposit reguiared for 6 and more people
We were a party of 9, we enjoyed our time there
We have a dog now and this place is dog friendly it's true
Give them a try you will not regret it

This is a proper pub! Great character with a roaring red hot fire near the bar, lots of quiet corners to sit in and enough staff to serve promptly. We had a meal and it was very good, large portions and excellent flavours/taste. Overall worth the short walk from the city centre.
G.
Fabulous Sunday lunch today, a party of 6 so we had a mixture of wines & beers, & also different items from the menu. I can honestly say that everything we had was excellent, the monkfish starter & lamb starter were sublime. The main courses we had , some had pork, some beef , some half & half - were all superb, meat perfect- veg was varied & cooked well, service was attentive & professional but not overbearing or patronising. I haven't been for a couple of years, but that will change - can't fault the dining experience we received today.
Many Thanks to the staff concerned !!
A. F.
Great pub with some good food. Facilities are well maintained and clean.
The staff are very friendly.
G. T.
Went for the first time unfortunately attending a wake. The pub was amazing. Great ambiance, very good local Dancing Duck Brewery ales and knowledgeable staff. Food is a good cut above the norm and if you find yourself in Derby wanting a top class old school pub where you can chat an afternoon or evening away with the locals, then go treat yourself. I've been back twice and will definitely be there again,
P.s, check out the punk memorabilia on the wall in one of the snugs of a great old Derby ban ,Anti Pasti, maybe the owner will sing you a verse or two 🤙😉
D. “.
This pub has everything from a great range of well kept beers, through to top quality food. The pub has a lovely traditional interior with roaring fire during the colder evenings.
If you like old school pubs with modern quality produce, you'll love the Exeter Arms.
B. M.
Great service, excellent Sunday roast meat, and suitably large portion. However, roasties were too hard in the middle for my liking, and unadvertised cauliflower cheese mixed with gravy to make a cheese slurry that made all the veg oddly cheesy. It's all good food, just some things not to my taste
K. R.
As a swede being a great fan of English pubs, this one rated very high. The atmosphere is very very pleasant. I say all this inspite of sitting here for one and half hours waiting for a walk in food order. Strongly recommended, especially if you are from Sweden and are looking for genuine english pubs. And no I'm not drunk writing this review, had 2 amazing beers from the Dancing Duck Brewery.
M.
Nice little boozer, quite atmosphere, quirky decor, fair prices and street parking, nice girls behind bar,not many in but would go again.
O. R.
Love the Exeter Arms for its unusual interior and its great staff. The food is always good. I had a halloumi burger with sweet potatoe fries. Friends had burgers/fish and chips. Pint of pedigree was recommended. I had the Ay Up local beer. Always very good.
D. P.
Great food, great beer
J. L.
Very nice pub 🧷🇬🇧🧷😀👍🍺🍺🍺,
I. W.
Expensive and slightly over rated. Beers ok but not the best.
A. K.
Last minute decision for somewhere to eat a Sunday dinner. Glad we did. Excellent service and food lovely. Very good value for money. Staff very helpful and even though they were busy there was not much of a wait. Highly recommended and just a very short walk from the town centre.
P. B.
Quality pub, one of Derbys best!
M. W. (.
Really good beer, really good food! Not very big, but I guess a common size for a British pub. Wasn't too packed when we went. Would go again if I'm ever visiting UK again.
A. D.
Excellent meal for 9 people. Food and service superb
A. C.
Excellent pub that much bigger than it looks from the outside. Take some cash as its parking meters all round, but don't let that put you off! Excellent ales and a great food menu. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch there, just wish we'd had longer! Really friendly staff too....
C. W.
Cannot rate this pub high enough. Amazing food, friendly staff. I love this place x
P. L.
Great food, great beers, great atmosphere. Lots of corners to sit for a meal with friends
D. S.
Great place, staff still so welcoming in these uncertain times, amazing food the overload natchos are a must between two for a starter .... great choice of snap with good size portions never go away hungry...... added bonus you can take the poochs in and the staff are always happy to see them ! One of derby’s hidden gems serving great local ales and gastro pub grub!
s. l.
The beer is very expensive.
Sunday lunch; pork, roast potatoes hard, cauliflower cheese dry and burnt and the mash was cold and lumpy.
Childrens sausage and mash, mash lumpy had to ask for vegetables extra by the time they came she had eaten the sausage and mash.
The manager is rude.
D. “. R. G.
This place is a diamond in the rough, the surrounding area of this pub is run down and somewhat grotty, please do not let this put you off. Step inside and you're almost in another world, this is an old, well loved and beautiful building with big old oak beams, open fires, cast iron stoves and gorgeous, chunky rustic furniture. Warm, friendly and bustling, yet somehow there's still an air of relaxation about the place.
The bar is small but well stocked with a decent selection of real ales, the staff really know how to keep bar, the beer is excellent. The food is second to none, the prices are ever so slightly higher than some of the other places in town, but trust me the quality of the food you're getting for your money is well worth it. My friend and I shared 'The Chip Tank' chips topped with cheese, bacon, sausage, chorizo, black pudding and jalapenos, between us and we were both blown away. This is a massive portion of chips, that are clearly home made and are absolutely incredible. The toppings aren't just a small scattering on top of the chips, they're mixed in throughout, every chip is almost guaranteed to have some topping with it.
I am seriously impressed with this place and I really can't wait to go back and try some of their main menu and sample more of their ale, definitely, definitely worth a visit or several.
P. M.
Love it here. Although they do serve food here, the is still a true feeling of being in a proper British pub. Beer is always top notch. Please support the Exeter next time you are in Derby for a pint. It's even better outside in the summer when you can sit outside.
J. R.
Excellent food and beer great service pleasant surrounding
N. C.
Fantastic food and brewery tap of the Dancing Duck brewery.
T. S.
Nice little pub serving good food, what more do you want?
A. E.
The Exeter Arms is a gem of a pub serving great food and good beer. When we are visiting Derby this is our go to place to eat. Today was our first outing after the easing of lock down and we weren't disappointed . If you want something which is a cut above the standard pub fare then this is for you. There's always something new on the menu and it always takes us an age to choose!
M. R.
good, I enjoyed my visit. Would go again.
S. S.
Foods not bad, service is pretty good, understaffed though so wait time was 45 mins for food xx
B. W.
Excellent customer service and absolutely fantastic food, they have a brilliant Sunday menu and are child friendly as well as allowing in dogs so your best friend doesn't have to miss out! They have a cozy open fire and an array of classic bar snacks with a bit of a twist... Well done for a fantastic job guys and gals... Keep it up ☺
L. B.
Excellent place for food. The trio of pies is highly recommended!
S. C.
First time to the Exeter and what a great place it is.
From the outside it looks like a backstreet local but having read the menu online we carried on in.
Staff were very nice and friendly, the food was excellent, the three of us enjoyed all our dishes from fish and chips to Barnsley chop (as a Southerner was bloody lovely).
To cap it all off a great selection of ales.
Going to come back, really liked this pub.
J. W.
Great pub - everything you could want. Fab range of local beer (Dancing duck brewery), fantastic food and a proper pub atmosphere. Real fire (when it's cold!) And a nice outdoor beer garden.
A real gem.
D. B.
Is it a real ale pub or a good restaurant? It can’t make up its mind.
The beer is great but having to queue at a 3 deep bar to order your food is ridiculous.
The food was very good but need a drink just before the meal is served? Head back to the 3 deep bar and get in the queue. Dinner has been served for 5 minutes before you get back.
A little thought over the diners would go a long way and realise the full potential of this pub.
J. S.
One of my favourite derby pubs, lots of local ales and Bangkok balls
M. S.
Wicked place.... great beers and spot on food, well worth a visit
J. P.
Excellent. Loads of cask ales, excellent food menu, lovely tasty food with good presentation, good portions and dog friendly.
J. P.
Had a really nice meal here a few weeks ago. Staff very helpful and good food - thank you. Have recommended you to family.
G. N.
Local produce tastily presented. Lovely friendly staff
R. v. V.
Lovely little pub, with friendly staff, good drinks, and cosy beer garden. Great for after-work drinks.
Be careful though, the car park next to it is privately owned and you will get a ticket if not careful. This is outside of the pub's control.
J. B.
It's pretty much a local, traditional "Built up area" type pub. A bit quirky though......... It has a conservatory that's more like a lean-to. It's got a burgundy leather couch(es) and, get this, it's got a compact ORGAN for those sing-a-longs.
However....... The food, the food is just wonderful. I've only been once and had one dish so I guess I should say the "MENU" is wonderful. It all just looks fantastic. Must go again
G. G.
Lovely pub, food gastropub level / medium restaurant prices, though it all looked very nice. Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent choice of real ales, lovely interior decor, great outdoor space. A novelly placed working organ to play with, and topical jokes in the toilets. Go visit!
A. W.
One of the best Real Ale pubs in Derby and the traditional pub lunches are excellent. If your wanting to experiences for yourself I would always attend early as it's always a busy pub and very popular. If you've not been get yourself down there and after visit the Silk Mill pub as thats its sister pub. They are both 10/10 pubs
R. G.
I enjoyed my experience at this public house. Nice beer good service and friendly atmosphere.
F. D. P.
From my point of vieux, it is typical english place. Good beers and the main course that I tested (lamb), was good.
D. F.
Superb food. Great beer and a good old fashioned pub feel. They have a quiz every Monday night. The local area isn't the most salubrious, however look beyond this and visit. You won't regret it.
W. F.
The food in this place is a cut above "pub grub". It's a destination pub, trust me. Get one of your party to have the nachos. Any of them. Very Mexican, they know what they are doing.
Great vegetarian selection too.
M. M.
The food is superb, far far better than you would expect of a pub. Good selection of draught beers, very friendly and helpful staff. I've eaten here a number of times and brought colleagues here when visiting from overseas, their words not mine 'I didn't know English food could be this good'
D. S.
Nice Sunday lunch, friendly helpful staff
M. G.
Excellent atmosphere, value and most importantly food. Nothing to complain aboutt really. The parking is on street though and restricted to two hours pay and display, but that is no fault of the pub.
K. T.
Fantastic food, best meal I've had out for years. Thank you. Nice welcome, only downside was I was driving so couldn't enjoy a beer but it looked good 😊
L. J.
Delightful gem of a pub offering freshly cooked tasty food in a cosy environment. Open fires, well stocked bar and friendly staff. What better way to wile away a few hours or more?
a. w.
The Exeter Arms will always have a special place in my heart having worked there from the age of 13 to 21.
Don't get chance to go in very often any more. So much has changed in the pub but I still love it 😊.
Great food and drink 🙂
A. K.
Had a meal for the first time here as we had vouchers. Food was good but menu was very limited for us as it was a bit too fussy and some strange combinations. Good for drinks though, especially if you're into real ale
D. B.
My favorite Derby pub. (Ok top 3) food is generally very good. They have an occasional off day but don't we all. Beer is ready good and part of the dancing duck chain. Nice building and off the beaten path. Despite this always busy which tells you all you need to know
J. m.
Well I never really bother writing reviews as we all expect something entirely different.
A beautiful Sunday dinner, excellent desert and great service thank yo.
E. W.
Lovely cosy pub, with very friendly and helpful staff! However the food could have been better. The hommity pie sounded wonderful but when served it was dry and stodgy, and it would have been nice to taste something other than potato and pastry!
J. G. T.
Superb food, but just a bit too expensive for a pub. Excellent haddock and chips today.
Great beer and very friendly staff. Not a small place if you explore the side rooms.
A. H.
Great food, drink and service!
C. S.
Great beer choices, friendly service, CAMRA discount and lovely surroundings. What’s not to love about the quintessential Exeter Arms. Cheers 🍻
T. N.
Bloody love this pub. Haven't been here for a while but they smashed the service and food. Menu is awesome, lighting is just right and the general atmosphere was perfect. Top marks.
C. M.
Very nice atmosphere, good selection of beers. Food was OK but they could do better. Last time the fish and chips disappointed and this time the chicken did the same.
D. A.
Good selection of real ales in a pub that has the atmosphere and feel of a country pub but is actually on the edge of the City of Derby
Low lighting is complemented by candlelight, especially effective in the converted old cottage that forms part of it. If just there for a few beers, beware of being asked to give up your table, as it has been reserved for diners. As a drinker supporting a pub this REALLY ANNOYS ME. I am not a second class customer! Good outside seating area at the back of the pub.
M. E.
Lovely atmosphere. Great beer. Attentive and hard working staff. You will melt due to the thousand fire places in the summer but its perfect for Winter
x. A.
Warm place in many aspects, brilliant food, service, quiet and peacefull. Food wise have only been once, but the meal that was had was brilliant, with the courtesy of being asked if everything was alright due to other people's opinions.
A. W.
If you like good real ale , a proper pub atmosphere with real open fires, good home cooked food and friendly staff then this is the place to go. Tucked away from the usual drunken idiots that you may find in a city centre pub , it is stress free and a joy to relax in. Highly recommended for a great selection of well kept ales and porters.
T. C.
Great pub, with lots of little rooms and two heated outdoor areas one for smoking and the other a conservatory type area. Good prices and range of beer.
C. H.
Lovely pub but has lost it's, 'local feel' from when I used it in the past. Great choice of ales, kept to a high standard. Food also good but on the pricey side.
J. M.
Solid pub food, great range of ale, really friendly and pleasant staff. I dropped in here by off-chance and very glad I did! Worth a visit.
S. S.
Excellent beverages and pub grub.
N. B.
The food here is locally sourced, freshly cooked and delicious. Proper old world charm. Dont be put off by the area and the 10 minute walk from the bus station, you will find it's well worth making the effort.
Its more expensive than its sister pub The Silk Mill and doesnt have the lunch menu offers that it does but its got more charm and atmosphere.
E. K.
I was a little put off by the location to start with, but should not have been apprehensive. The Sunday lunch is awesome! Had the Arf and Arf and all vegetables and meat were cooked well. The Yorkshire pudding was spot on too.
M. D.
Great atmosphere. Interesting food cooked to a high standard plus lovely service. Large range of beers, all well kept.
J. B.
Lovely atmosphere, _gorgeous_ beers from near and far, and utterly stunning food. The best chips I've ever had. I'm ruined for other chips now.
O. f.
Lovely food and service...
Highly recommended.
G. G.
Good beer good food, and more space now rear area is redesigned. Excellent Dancing Duck beer and the food quality has been sustained. Imaginative British menu.
M. M.
Great place, lovely food
S. F.
Excellent beers. Excellent food in a traditional real ale pub
N. B.
Excellent pub for eating and drinking just off the city centre
C. C.
With their own dancing duck brewery there are plenty of proper real ales here and they serve good food.
The place retains charm and the feel of a proper local.
H. R.
This is my favourite city pub. It's so warm and cosy, friendly staff and the food is excellent. Great range of beers.
Well worth a visit.
J. B.
Great food, exceptional staff service so glad this pub has survived covid lockdowns
C. 2.
Can't believe it's taken me seven years to discover this place in Derby. Everything a pub should be - nooks and crannies, super friendly staff, excellent real ales headlined by Dancing Duck's offerings, delicious food at fair prices, and free biscuits for the dog. Slightly away from the centre, but worth the walk. A sad reminder of what all of Derby could have been if the town planners hadn't ripped the heart out of the place.
D. T.
The food is excellent, the beer is very good, it's cozy and traditional. The clientele also seem generally pleasant. One of my favourite pubs in Derby.
R. F.
Nice town pub, food good but somewhat overpriced. Today it was cold out and not very warm inside so meal cooled down too fast.
Lovely serving staff and plenty of atmosphere.
R. C.
Great to be out out, felt safe with the covid precautions they had in place. Staff very friendly, think they were relieved to have customers back. Really enjoyed meal too.
J. S. P.
Went to the Exeter Arms for a works Christmas meal. The staff were super helpful in making the arrangements, the place is amazing really nice little pub and the food was truly amazing. Will certainly recommend and will be visiting again soon.
J.
Lovely lunch from lunchtime menu and a drink to wash it down.Top class from all staff.
C. c.
Brilliant pub, nice ales, great food, family friendly, ran by martin rooper former front man of derby punk band anti-pasti.
A. C.
A cosy pub that serves great food, and along with a good selection of wines and dancing duck beers. Bookings are advisable in the evenings as it's a very popular place. Definitely among our favourite places to eat in Derby.
d.
Great selection of beers. Nice outdoor seating. Nice atmosphere.
S. A.
Traditional pub, small bar but plenty of rooms.
B. B.
Nice interstesting menu and the food quality matched the description. Dog treats and bow provided and dogs allowed inside. Good beer selection especially some experimental alles
K. S.
Great pub - very cosy, good selection of ales and ciders, good outdoor space and nice food available.
D. D.
Beer heaven! 2022, beer, food and atmosphere as good as it always has been.
M. R.
A great pub in the true sense of the word. Dancing Duck beer is a centre piece of this hostelry, great food always available. Worth a visit when in Derby.
P. H.
Excellent hospitality, excellent food, excellent beer from the dancing duck brewery. A traditional pub with great atmosphere and the most polite and courteous staff. A great place to go.
R. W.
Quirky and interesting old pub. The food was lovely, fresh with an inventive menu. A good choice of ales too. Recommended!
P. S.
Proper old school boozer. Great food. Nice staff
G. I.
Another cracking real ale pub in the heart of the World's Unofficial Real Ale Capital that is Derby. Mark my words, you won't be disappointed. Get there early though as this one is a real local success story and it's absolutely rammers most nights. Check out the landlords selection of Punk memorabilia from his days in Derby's legendary band Anti-Pasti.
L. S.
Tasty beer. Good place to relax and enjoy a good pint. Even better if internet was available. Entered the password, connected, but no internet!
Hey, I take it all back. Internet has suddenly appeared. Relax and enjoy news on The Rams win at Hull
H. G.
Nice cosy little pub. Only thing that got me looking around every 10 mins was something that sounded like buckets of water falling from the floor above, in the corner where we were sat. But apart from that the food and service was great.
S. C.
Great food and choices of Ale, relaxed atmosphere. Staff are awesome!
S. P.
Good atmosphere and enough choices on the menu to please everyone in the party. The food was tasty and well presented. We would definitely visit again.
A. W.
Excellent! Great food, tip top choices for veggie & vegan, awesome beer and the best staff. Where is the six star option?
R. P.
Lovely staff and excellent food. The Exeter Arms is a treasure. I passed a Nandos subsequently and wondered - well one has to wonder! They're missing out.
S. G.
Firstly- it's a real REAL ALE pub Fantastic food at real prices. Not over inflated as at other 'food pubs'. Proper real ale from their own brewery. Once you've been here, you'll not want to go anywhere else!
M. W.
Decent food and friendly staff. A little on the small side, so a bit of a struggle to fit our group in as the tables are quite close together. Overall would recommend
D.
Top food and friendly environment.
N. W.
Always a favorite, with a good selection of drinks, a great atmosphere, and attentive staff.

Great modern British food with a twist. Friendly and attentive staff and excellent and well kept craft beer. I'll be back soon.
S. K.
Very good real ale pub with variety of handpull real ale and Cider as well as your usual lager. Dancing Duck brewery a speciality but not exclusive.
