Reviews of The Malt Shovel Shardlow
C. D.
Our favourite pub in Shardlow. Staff very friendly, fun, and inviting. Friday fish and chips are absolutely amazing. Awesome selection of beers. The pork pies with complementary pickles are just too good to miss! We always take a couple home for a late night feast!
The only pub I've ever been to with board games printed on every table with pieces available behind the bar. Full selection of games from kids snakes and ladders to monopoly and Scrabble.
A must visit for anyone visiting the fabulous historical canal port of Shardlow.

Lovely atmosphere, fantastic staff!
Popped in after walking along the canal/River for a few hours.
Had some amazing soup and top quality sandwiches. Great service, wonderful pub.

Came for food last week, we loved it, can't beat home made food. Great place to go especially on a sunny day sitting outside next to the canal. Definitely be back again soon.

Went today for breakfast. Quality of food can not fault.
Plates were cold, So food cooled down quickly. Much better served on hot plates.
c. w.
Nice friendly staff. Only got a small menu but it's all voted fresh to order drinks are a bit pricey but food is good vale and plenty of it
S. G.
Best pub around , food is next level , great staff , would give 4.5 as they don't sell a decent cider , but hey , you can't have it all , doesn't stop me keep going back!!!
J. D.
Took our family for breakfast, to celebrate our younger daughter's birthday. Helpful, friendly staff. Grandchildren enjoyed playing board games while waiting for their food, while the four adults enjoyed a hot drink. Breakfasts were excellent. We'll be visiting again!
B. S.

Two well kept real ales available . Great fish & chips on a Friday
J. R.
Cozy pub near the canal in Shardlow with friendly welcome. Getting to be a regular for their breakfast served between 10 am - noon. Good selection and exceptional value. Hot drink and orange juice included if you order a full English. Intending to be a regular.
T. J.
Very friendly pub by the canalside, with fish and home made chips on a Friday evening. They also do steak and Thai food nights apparently - worth investigating!
J.
Our favourite place for Sunday lunch, proper home cooked food and good value. Dog friendly and nice atmosphere, good choice of beers and staff who know what they are doing. Good old fashioned pub.
J. G.
Lovely location, great staff and excellent food. Whilst other local pubs were quiet this one was clearly popular and well deserved too.
J. V.
Great home made food, and plenty of it, great value for money, steak pie, amazing!!! Friendly staff loved it!!

Located right next to the canal. One of those pubs that is good for sitting outside on a sunny day.
K. H.
I went with my family for breakfast (late breakfast). Food was nice, nice atmosphere and games on the tables to play, which is handy if you have kids! Wrong food order was given to us but it was reconciled with no fuss.
I. J.
Good place to sit and watch activity along The Wharf. Open from breakfast throughout the day. Excellent pot of tea served with custard cream biscuits
C. V.
Called in tonight by chance with a mate. Lovely staff. We had some amazing home cooked food. Will definitely go again.
A. W.
Lovely food. Seated opposite the kitchen and stairs. We would had preferred a window to look out over the canal but the table wasn't big enough for 5 adults. We all enjoyed our food despite it being a small choice. Waitresses were polite and helpful. Atmosphere was good and we loved the decoration inside the pub. Alot of reclaimed wood turned into decoration or fittings.
S. W.
Lovely food, well worth a visit and we will return. Plenty of gluten free options without any fuss.
D. B.
Good pub all round. Dog friendly not too expensive although 1 is enough. Lovely atmosphere.
R. B.
It was a hot afternoon and I took advantage of a break int he weather for a bike ride, all the customers where outside. The Bar lady was most welcoming and friendly and the Hobgoblin real ale truly on form. I will make this a regular stop on my rides! Lovely location next to the canal.

Warm welcome from the bar staff. Nice canal-side pub. Popped in for lunch, my wife had a huge jacket potato with cheese and beans and I had Cajun chicken baguette. Great food washed down with Pedigree ale. Well worth a visit.

Nice warm welcome at this pub on the canalside. A lovely place for a summer evening drink.

The food was presented really well and it tasted great! It had a lot of outdoor tables which has a lovely view of the canal. There are also indoor tables if it is cold.
I had Lasagne which had a large serving and was with chips which were delicious. It was all well-priced as well!
The staff were so great, when our lemonade was missing some flavouring they gave us a new one after another customer complained. It was excellent service!
I would highly recommend, and thank you for a great lunch!
A. H.
Nice cosy pub with a good range of drinks and food!

A lovely location with friendly, helpful, accommating and efficient staff. The food was delicious, the service nicely done and the atmosphere relaxed, homely and happy. I would recommend breakfast there whole-heartedly. Bravo!
A. R.
Really pleased to find this lovely pub on our walks. Felt really safe and well organised during lockdown with proper social distancing and precautions. That aside, the views of the canal are lovely and it's a fab spot when the weather is good. Reasonable selection of ales and the sausage cobs were great. What's not to love?
A. M.
Very quite at 11.00 when dropped in for coffee. They do a breakfast cob including coffee, good value!
C. H.
Went today and was very pleased with my experience. As a family we had 2 regular breakfasts and 1 large breakfast, cups of tea and orange juice. Was surprised as it was 50% off! So we got a bargain brunch! There's a one way system, hand sanitizer, and tables placed 2 meters apart. The food was lovely, the service fast, and I felt the pub was doing everything it can to keep customers safe. I'll definitely be visiting again! Well done the malt shovel!
M. S.
Nice beer and curry although it was a bit cold
W. P.
Absolutely fab, a proper pub! Board games printed on the tables are a great idea, especially as I won! Great food with proper puddings. Staff are lovely, very friendly and make you feel extremely welcome. Definitely recommend. Oh, and dogs are welcome too.

Nice enough location alongside the river. Friendly staff and obviously popular if the amount of trade is any indication. Decent pint too.
P. W.
Well, what an I say... If you like your breakfasts this is the place to come!! A big plate with plenty to eat at reasonable prices.. Service with a smile, a wide selection of drinks to choose from to wash it down. Could not refuse a hot refillable drink with our breakfasts. Warm and cosy atmosphere with game themed tables which we couldn’t resist to play. Best thing about this place was that my dog felt welcomed here (he got himself a dog treat) which made the whole experience worthwhile.. We shall definitely be coming back here again (next weekend 😉).
S. k.
Nice food, nice beer. A busy Sunday lunch. Opted for the light lunch of omelette and chips which went down very well, but the Sunday roasts that were being served looked good too. The only small gripe was that the tea was a bit strong for our tea drinker.
g. s.
Homemade chips, just like mum used to make....
S. B.
Brilliant pub. Went with extended family. Ages from 3 to 60+ everyone had a good time playing games on the tables. Chess, scrabble, Cluedo, ludo and noughts and crosses. Added bonus were the pork scratching. Will definitely go back again

The wobbly wanderer and tricky Trevor were visiting Shardlow for a day out.
Having left our cars at The Clockhouse Pub (intending to lunch there later)we followed the Canal towpath alongside various narrow boats and eventually found the Malt Shovel and being both thirsty and hungry we decided to call in.
The pub has a large carpark and plenty of room outside for eating and drinking.
I opted for a pint of San Miguel and Ticky went for a mineral water
Being hungry we opted for a couple of meals from their (good) selection.
Tricky went for a burger and wobbly here went for Chicken breast (Malt style).
We couldn't fault the meals they were served quickly but were hot.
The young lady behind the bar was very pleasant and friendly.
Would definitely go again.
J. B.
Great food, quality and value, staff very friendly, will be back soon.
