Reviews of Swan & Three Cygnets
J. R.
Good drinkers pub. I've only been in once, last night in fact for a couple of turbo pints. It's respectably priced and if the weather is decent you can sit outside and fire them Taddy Lagers down in the sun.
P. T.
Very good drinks for the price. If you like dark beers you can't go wrong with the Extra stout, and their original wheat beer is very good too...
c. w.
Lovely traditional pub. Nice and quiet as no loud phones which made a nice change. Great pint of lager.
K. B.
A decent pub in Durham selling some nice drinks ended up having a nice cold pint of original wheat beer. Nice to see people having conversations instead of using mobile phones
A. B.
Great pub. They now have a card machine. This blew my mind seeing as it had always been cash only!
A. o. A.
Nice classic pub atmosphere with a large availability for seating and groups. There is also a few picnic tables outside down by the river to relax and enjoy a pint. Staff was friendly and the beer is cheep (what I got was between £2-3). Would recommend for those on a budget
K. J.
Samuel Smith brewery pub, Taddy Lager and stout, organic wheat beer and cider, some nice drinks and a nice pub near the river.
m. s.
Great beer, but cash only and coal-burning fire.
C. T.
Wouldn't go back. Weird mix of old drunks and students, drinks pretty cheap but barman only filled my glass halfway annoyingly. Was cash only for a while as well which is so strange in 2022? Have a card machine now.
C. C.
Good Sam Smiths pub in a great location. Nice pint of Taddy.
Reasonably priced.
The Sam Smiths fruit beers are always the best as well.
Return on the regular 👍
A. T.
Lovely warm welcome, great selectand good beer.
M. d.
Classic student pub, staff not always the friendliest and beer could be cheaper but altogether I always enjoyed my nights here.
S.
Lovely seating outside, some tables available even right next to the river!
S. R.
Great catch up with a dear friend. A very traditional pub, friendly welcome and good beer
C. M.
Good selection of drinks and a nice table/seating area in the parking lot next to the river.
J. R.
Tired bar but great Samuel Smiths beers and great location, you have to go, we love it
a. s.
Great beer and friendly staff. The pub takes cash only which is a bit inconvenient hence 4 stars
L. H.
Good old fashioned English pub with very friendly staff and an excellent pint of stout.
A. J.
Nice enough surrounding, top price for normally inexpensive beer though.
P. R.
Street pub could do with a bit tlc update but location and beer brilliant.
T. L.
Good prices, nice staff, tasty beer, river and city views AND a no phones policy inside the pub (great)...
a. U.
Agree with other reviewers- good value (bloody cheap compared to further South). Very relaxed vibe - lots of students and all civilised and pleasant.
Cash only though.
A. M.
Excellent location. Sam Smith's boozer. Quiet out of term time.
M. G.
Great typical Sam Smith pub. Good atmosphere and usual quality beers/lagers at a reasonable price. Chatty bar staff and a, mix of customers.
W. M.
Lovely friendly pub with great ales.
S. B.
Great pub,cheap pint
A. M.
A good place to sit in the sun and enjoy nice pint of Sam Smith's.
R. F.
Lovely welcoming staff. Areas were clearly marked out with plenty antibacterial gel around the premises.
Really enjoyed our afternoon.
W. M.
Very friendly pub with great staff
J. R.
Good cozy pub with great beers. It is a symbol and point of reunion for Durham uni students. Considering Covid would be better to accept also card payments... It is not 1800...
M. C.
Not a bad little bar right by the river
A. V.
Nice friendly place. You can walk your dog on this beach. Lovely place for a relaxing day. Loved my first visit to the pub. Patrons and bartenders alike were friendly and helpful. Really nice Sam Smith's pub. Cracking pub. Prices brilliant, staff are great. Want a fantastic pub in the middle of an old world city in the UK.
J. P.
Excellent Sammys beer served by an exiled Bolton lass.
G. W.
What a lovely place to enjoy a cracking pint, it was a pleasure to be there, I was made to feel welcome by the staff and I will be back.
A. S.
I knew what to expect from a Sam Smith pub: no phones, no technology, a warm pub, and good beer. The staff here, though, exceeded my expectations in friendliness and service, and the regulars were just as welcoming. I left feeling as if I had made some wonderful new friends, and look forward to my next trip to Durham to have a drink here again!
R. C.
The things you must remember with this pub it is a Samuel Smith branded only for drinks
Also it is a totally digital free pub and you must remember it is cash only
The upside It's a suntrap in summer .
D. W.
Good value brilliant staff and central for easy access
R. B.
Great local pub with inexpensive drinks. You get a mix of locals, students and tourist here. It's a great place for a chat with friends. The owners and staff are really friendly as well. I've gone to mainly this pub the whole four years I've lived in Durham. A lot if great memories!
R.
Basic.Could do with more standing tables. And cleanliness
J. B.
Great value and atmosphere. People complaining about the phone ban and cash only: It's not hard to get some cash, and if you want to sit on your phone just go somewhere else.
A. B.
Good to be in a friendly pub, where you can hear and coverse without a TV on. Good location and good prices.
b. w.
Cracking pub. Prices brilliant, staff are great. Want a fantastic pub in the middle of an old world city in the UK....... this is the place to be!!! Fantastic head retention, clean premises. All walks of life there.... And good for a natter or to be left alone. All round brilliant pub...... 10 out of 10 pub....... THUMBS UP Plus must be great as there is always someone in either up stairs and/or downstairs. Please visit as I've said CRACKING !!!!!
N. F.
Nice pub. Pleasant outdoor seating area. Not dog friendly indoors though 🙁
K. B.
Great Samuel Smith's pub.
R. H.
Great locally brewed beer at a fantastic price. No frills bar that is always friendly and welcoming when we have been in Durham. I would recommend the organic lager at £3 a pint. We went to the Head of Steam as well but found it overpriced and craft beer pretentious in comparison.
P. O.
Nice friendly place. You can walk your dog on this beach. It's early at the moment but the car park fills up quick. Try to get there before ten o'clock. Lots of dog walkers here. Lovely place for a relaxing day.
D. D.
Nicely designed pub with plenty of rooms to relax in. Just popped in for a quick pint after a walk round Durham. 1st time for ages I ordered a pint of samuel Smith and a very nice pint. Good location to chill out and relax.
A. “. S.
We visited here on Black Eyed Friday (last Friday before Christmas ) so the place was full of idiots trying to get as drunk as possible - most of them succeeding. That said the beer was good, the staff very attentive, and the toilets relatively clean. Worth another visit.
C. W.
Would highly recommend! Food is gorgeous with a wide range to pick from, comes out very well presented. All staff are extremely friendly and welcoming, the pub itself is very traditional and lovely inside. Very warm and welcoming greetings from all staff along with the very friendly locals. Absolutely loved this place and will definitely be attending again on a regular basis!
C. R.
It's what you'd expect from a Sam Smith's pub. Good beer at great value in a non musical place but still with atmosphere.
Wide ranging clientèle from students, professional people and anyone passing by to enjoy value for money drink and chat.
D. S.
Owner of the chain has a strict rule about no mobile phones to be used. An interesting and novel idea but annoying when you want to look for your next venue to get food. Seems childish. Otherwise, nice beers and service.
S. B.
Not for me. Nice enough pub, great location, with the standard Sam Smith range. As a man in my 30s, it was pretty weird to get a dressing down by the barman, who'd seen us on CCTV checking the cricket score briefly on our phones.
J. y.
Nicely situated .Good lager .
T. T.
Great pub, amazing location in Durham. On a sunny day this is a prime spot for a pint next to the river. Added bonus drinks are not just quality they are cheap!
J. A.
Very good Samuel Smith's pub in the middle of Durham. Good beer at very low prices. Slight shame about the lack of food available. If busy by the bar, make sure to check for seats downstairs!
t. m.
Pint of Taddys ...You wont regret it!
M.
The staff here are always friendly, and this place always has a good atmosphere, especially in the evenings and even more so on Friday and Saturday evenings. They have a rule of no mobile phones inside, which I suppose encourages conversation, but there's lots of space outside too which is nice for when it's sunny
A. H.
Charming place, throwback to a simpler time. Dont turn up without cash, and dont expect the staff to bend over backwards for you. Do expect fair prices and great beer.
D. P.
Nice location by the river. Predominantly serving local brews. Large seating area down stairs. The coke (soft drink) had a funny taste according to my son.
S. H.
Great service, lovely location and well organised, re covid and its one way system. Drinks were well priced and my husband enjoyed the real ales. Well worth a visit.
I. B.
I would have given this pub 5 stars but when we visited for food, we were told the freezers had broken overnight so all the food we wanted to eat, couldn't be ordered. Nicely decorated pub though and reasonably priced too.
M. F.
Sam Smith's at it's best. What a pub.
R. M.
Quick service, sat outside though, absolutely rammed packed with punters. Bar staff were very good. Samuel Smith beers so a little limited on that front, although the India Pale was pretty good.
J. D.
Convenient and cheaply priced, the Swan and Cygnets is a perfect place for an after work, or cheeky mid-shop drink. A wide selection of draught and bottled beers, and spirits are here. However, don't expect anything from other than Sam Smith's brewery, though I'm sure you'll find a tipple to suit your desires.
Four stars, simply because it would be nice if Sam Smith's started doing an alcohol-free beer. Admittedly, the Swiss Lager is nearly that at 2%, but even that's not great when you're looking at none for the road.
A. M.
Nee Phones. Nee Swearing. Great Beer.
M. J.
Good chain pub, reasonable prices, friendly helpful staff, only one traditional beer on tap, mainly larger or flipping IPAs.
O. C.
Good beer price and great beer. Comfortable and attractive surroundings with lots of outside space. Great way to spend a summer's afternoon contemplating the virtues of sloth.
F. S. P. O.
Cheap and cheery pub, with a good selections of beers on tap and drinks in general. A place everyone coming to Durham has to visit at least once.
G. W.
Nice pub, this is a Samuel Smith's pub which have their own brewery drinks and the lagers are nice.
L. C.
Lovely, traditional, crowded and cheap pub. Its outside tables make it really unique around Durham, specially on summer.
It's all about the Taddy Lager
N. S.
A very nice Sam Smith pub with a terrace giving on to the river. Cash Only! 😁
F. R.
Busy when sunny. I am not a fan of the beer but it is cheap. £20 minimum card payment so pop to cash pint or you will be ordering about 8 pints...
J. C.
A nice little place with a cosy feel about it . Nice seating area outside to watch the world go by . Bar area small but with a good choice of real ales . A popular place for students , tourists and all day drinkers .
D. H.
Old fashioned sort of place serving Sam Smith's drinks some of which are really nice and some not the best. No phones or tablets allowed which is a nice change. Different but nice.
I. H. B.
The Swan, as it is known, is an excellent pub to hang around with your friends in a relatively calm environment and without expending too much money to have two pints of Taddy. It is a mixture of a local pub, a university pub and a touristic pub, which makes it great for several generations of people, from university students to baby boomers.
S. F.
Only a sam Adams pub, doesn't offer a good cider for the likes of me as the sam Adams cider is not good. It is pretty cheap though which is why students love it on a sunny day
L. B.
Brilliant service. Great pint. Felt sorry for the staff as they were rushed off there feet.
G. C.
Great sam smiths pub. Big bar with a room off and another bar downstairs. Staff friendly and helpfull cask bitter spot on. Toilets spotless. Mostly groups of students in on two nights visited taking advantage of this gem
G. H.
Very reasonably stupidly priced beer! How they make a profit I will never know!!! But have enjoyed getting merry on less than £10!
B. S.
Had a great time. Johnathan was brilliant, polite and funny just in the right moments. Great serving. Will come back again for sure.
E. H.
Good quality drinks at good prices. Atmosphere is relaxed and great for meeting with friends. Old and young customers welcome.
C. G.
Great pub. Shame they had no food otherwise I would have stayed a while.
M. B.
Only stayed for one drink as we were going to the miners gala. Staff were very good and the toilets were very clean. Only gave 4 stars as we only saw a small part of the hotel
L. P. (.
Lovely old style pub no mobiles or gadgets allowed inside and lovely tables and chairs for seating allowed outside alongside riverbank.
P. P.
Deducted 2 stars as NO mobiles allowed. Really in this day and age and a hoovering manager. I get the idea just think it doesn't translate in this day and age. A shame. But didn't stop a lovely Grad celebration with my daughter and her friends.
M. b.
Typical Sam Smith's pub . Cheap welcoming and in a great location next to the river
A. L.
Great to have such a choice of ales and lagers. Lots of Sam Smiths to choose from. Lovely outside seating on a sunny day to sit and watch the world go by
L. H.
Great pub. Fairly student dominated, cheap beer, no swearing policy (although doesn't seem to be enforced), friendl helpful bar staff.
D. F.
Mostly student clientele. Can't beat the prices and has this historic feel to it. Also outdoor benches provide a good scene in the summer months.
M. G.
Typical Sam Smith's pub, excellent beer, no TVs or loud music and sign warning about foul language, it tends to keep the idiots out! Well worth a visit
R. W.
Traditional pub but the beer is Sam Smith so you either love or hate it.
Has got a good outside area for the summer months
M. M.
Great little place, oak brewery nice pint for fab price, so refreshing to find a good lication withoit rip off prices. Never disappoints
p. h.

M. C.
Just your regular good-old pub
N. E.
Great pub very reasonably priced drinks. Mobile phones are not allowed to be used just people talking great
S. J.
Good old fashion pub, brilliant layout and nice pint n prices, only gave a 3 and not a 5 because at most times its rammed with pig ignorant students
S. G.
It was nice apart from could do with a ramp down to the lower area for disabled people
C. H.
One of many pubs raby arms over 40s football ⚽ team go to on there annual day out, lovely in the summer chilling on the grass with a pint 🍻 👌
B. W.
Good beer at very reasonable prices. But wouldn't let me take my dogs inside or I'd have given 5 star's
L. B.
Still my favourite place for normal quiet pint
M.
Very nice pub, cash only though
A. G.
Great pub. Great Sovereign Bitter and only £2.04 a pint. No music. No TV. Great if u wi wife (or somebody else's wife!)

Loved my first visit to the pub. Patrons and bartenders alike were friendly and helpful.

Cosy and homely atmosphere with plenty of craik with the other visitors. Good setting by the river and views of the castle.
D. N.
Always liked the Swan, cheap and cheerful though it is cash only
A. O.
No phone rule is quaint and unique, but if they want us to act like it's 1970, drinks should cost what they did in 1970
J. W.
A nice mix of students and locals. Good selection of Samuel Smith beers for a reasonable price.
B. S.
Very nice Sam Smiths pub.
l. d.
