Reviews of The Head of Steam Durham
E. Y.
Visited Durham and found this gem of a place!
Massive selections of drinks, and amazing food, the presentation was superb.
Staff very pleasant always a plus!
Love the cool decor too.
Will definitely visit again when next in Durham.
S. R.
Great selection of beers and great food. The bar staff are brilliant giving the place a top atmosphere. They joined in with all the banter of the night and always happy to help and smiling.
H. C.
Without a doubt one of the best bars in Durham. A really chilled atmosphere, friendly and professional staff who regularly go above and beyond to ensure a relaxed experience. The selection of beers and spirits is always expertly curated and the food is delicious with huge portions and a great emphasis on vegan food. It's got a lovely sun trap of a terrace and a pool table. There's a reason I spend far too much of my time in here.
S. F.
It's good to pop into a pub with a decent selection of beers from the UK and elsewhere. The barman was knowledgeable about the beer and that really adds to the experience of going to a pub.
j.
Best place for a beer in Durham!! Tried the food for the first time and really enjoyed the vegan donner fries (I'm not vegan!), love this place.
S. C.
Started going back in here after couple of years, main reason is they have started doing a great gluten free draught pilsner which is amazing. Also they have a bottled gluten free option as well. The music is fantastic and the staff are all very helpful and friendly. This to me is what a pub should be,, I have seen a few comments about it being a student bar,but I have seen a wide age range in there and everyone seems to enjoy it. 👍

Stopped here on a quick trip to Durham, when we found there wasn't any vegan cafes. There was a good choice of food on the menu, one of us had a vegan Head of Steam burger with chips, the other had a Margareta pizza. The burger was great with lots of sauce and vegan bacon. The chips were a bit of a disappointment and far too much salt on them but didn't spoil yhe meal. The pizza was out of this world. It was a large pizza with loads of cheese. Too much to eat for one so took it home as a doggie bag. Would definitely recommend eating here. The staff were very friendly and even told me which sauces were vegan. Not very often you go to a none vegan place and a member of staff is willing to provide that level of service. Thanks to you all for making a stressful day a lot easier.
k. S.
Lovely quiet area in a sun trap just off the main busy road. Excellent choice of ales.
Music very good soul music to relax to in the sun.
Food is pricey so didn't bother ordering pizza as a margerita was a tenner.

Being from South Yorkshire the Head of Steam in Sheffield is always on our Saturday afternoon route, this one in my opinion is better. The range of beer is extensive so plenty to choose from, we had a couple of pints of stout each which were lovely. The inside decor and seating I thought was very good, everything seemed laid back and relaxed. The guy we were chatting to I think maybe was the manager was very friendly and a credit to the company. We could have easily stopped all night but wanted to try other pubs. Highly recommended.

Tough to review, because they have a great beer selection with at least four cask on as well as many keg and a full fridge with cans and bottles. Bit frustrated on last visit, as had booked a table in advance but on arrival none had been reserved, the app would not work for ordering and then at least half the menu was off (was not advised of this in advance either) so had to go elsewhere to eat anyway. It does have a LOT of vegan options (around 50% of menu) if that is your bag, sadly for me nearly all the meat options were unavailable. I have eaten here once before and the food was nice then.
Just a quick edit - other readers may have noticed the venue asked me to e-mail them, I did so shortly after (several months ago now) and they never replied. 🤦🏼♂️

Great wee place. Lots of drinks on tap. Does contactless. Two floors. Seats outside on the balcony for sunny weather. Comfy seats. Lots of tables. Good music. Nice decor. Pretty busy and lively. Didn't eat but good looking menu.
A. L.
A nice craft brew place with good food and a nice selection of drinks. When we visited, they were still offering a Eat Out To Help Out menu with 40% off food from Monday-Thursday in September. We had the pizza and a couple of starters. All very fresh and tasty. Apart from the beer, I tried the signature cocktail which was very tasty. They have outdoor seating with great views of rooftops as well.
l. 1.
Lovely friendly staff, a great range of beers including loads of nice tallboy cans. Dog friendly and great food. They also have a good space for functions. Would recommend!
A. D.
Good place to enjoy ales and lagers from around the world. Not so good if you're the Mr Average pint drinker. Decent selection of food, and upstairs outside balconies to enjoy the afternoon/evening sun.
C. L.
Recently been here and must say the drinks are delicious, yet to try the food, downside I would have around the place would be the price on certain drinks (with it being craft is understandable) and the toilets being a tad neglected.
Overall the place has an amazing atmosphere and friendly staff!
Will definitely revisit and recommend.
S. J.
Good beer selection.
Friendly staff - not really on the ball though.
Welcoming atmosphere.
Awful food - avoid!
K. B.
Normally I would give five stars, but on an early Saturday evening they had no gas left which was no good if you wanted a pint of lager or anything else used with the gas. Not good I'm afraid.
D. H.
My family and I were in on Sunday afternoon. A glass was dropped from the balcony and it just missed my grandson with shards of glass ending up in his pushchair. The staff were absolutely superb, dealing with both us and the party that dropped the glass in an excellent manner. Superb customer service by the manager and his team. Thank you.
K. R.
Visited here yesterday ,very helpful staff, great beer at reasonable prices. what more can you ask for?
I recommend the road crew real ale but allof our beers were very good
K. B.
Great vegan options on the menu and an excellent selection of alcohol free beers etc for those of us who don't partake.
A. M.
Good beer and food, brilliant bar staff.
P. V.
Great selection of drinks, my favourite bar in Durham.
E. W.
This little haven, in Durham Town, offers brilliant service and exceptional beers. From Omnipollo boutique sours to more conventional Beavertown brews, the selection is absolutely massive. The service is top quality too.
If you're in the area, and a beer fan, give it a visit. You won't be disappointed.
This place deserves the rare gift of a five star review.
S. B.
Abolutely amazing Vegan Chikn tikka pizza. Half price throughout January 😋
B. M.
Did it just get more expensive??? I realise its extra super cool with Cockney Hipster bar staff but please don't be so pushy about what I want to drink. Still i guess its a safe place for the over 70's spending their superannuation on hellishly expensive beer............I used to really like it here!
m. w.
Tucked away up a side ally but once you are there they have a good selection of beers and friendly staff
L. A.
Currently in the Head of Steam in Durham, and speaking to the best manager with the most wonderful service I've genuinely ever had. A wonderful atmosphere, great music, awesome food and a brilliant selection of drinks. Get yourself down NOW!
T. G.
Great bar with great character, excellent selection of beers and ciders, both bottled and on draught. Do also have a small cocktail menu. They do serve food, though Durham isn't short of places to eat.
The staff are very helpful and friendly, and know a lot about the beer so can help advise.
Seating inside and out and the fact that it's set back a bit from the main street means it's got a great vibe, which is added to by the music that's gently played throughout.
Fantastic bar, cannot recommend highly enough!
I. J.
Amazing food, amazing beer, amazing staff. A genuine home away from home
D. S.
Only went in for a pint but great selection of beers and spirits and staff were friendly and efficient will definitely be back.
R. O.
And not just for the epic bar staff the atmosphere great menu for my lovely vegan man and a bit of a favorite x they even let me charge my phone
D. P.
Nice pint, staff seemed nice, not sure what was going on with the prices mind
J. N.
Excellent location staff are polite and professional good choice of drinks and plenty of places to sit. We enjoyed our visit and definitely go back. I would highly recommend this place.
S. J. M.
Absolutely loved the Aussie barman. G'day mate. He highly recommended the vegan food, which was top notch. Also make sure you order the Cech beer that takes for ever to pour. 😉 Brilliant bar, brilliant barman, brilliant banter.
A. B.
Nice range of beers I'd not seen before lovely bar staff
M. H.
What a belta place this is. Happened to pop in yesterday whilst out having a few day drinks and was impressed by everything. The pizza was amazing and the portion of the chips was very generous, plus everything was homemade. The beer was very good and the staff were lovely, this is a little hidden gem of a place and will be sure to pop back again soon.
J. C.
Great beer selection. Great staff too, who know about beer. Top atmosphere considering next to some dross in North Road.
S. C.
Great selection of drinks and friendly staff 👌
C. H.
Great selection of craft beers and friendly staff.
J. H.
Really like this place. Great staff and beer selection. Slightly pricey is the only negative comment.
B. M.
Excellent staff, nice selection of beers & lagers.
D. M.
So if your booking here for a function. Check and get it in writing what you can have, ie time you can have your event till, what area is for you, make sure the bar is fully stocked with drink and glasses, bar staff available all night and no way to play your own music, getting a follow up telephone call 7 days earlier and the information not passed on untill it was to late, when i booked i was given false information, so slightly spoilt my event .
R. K. (. a. M.
Rhys/Reece - the manager - gave us two great things over the night: fantastic beers and fantastic chat. Lots of the staff, and Rhys himself, are quite new, but are so enthusiastic and kind. I’ve been coming to the Head of Steam for a few years and I hope this manager lasts for a while.
J. M.
Great selection of beer, good staff and nice little area to sit in the sun. Would be better if you could supply the sun all day
D. W.
Great pub nice and tidy plus great selection of beers !
N. M.
Great selection of beers and quirky bar
S. M.
Quality couple of pints after getting a haircut next door. Will be back soon. 🍺🍺🍺
s. R.
Ones of Durham best bars if not the best, alllllll the beers.
K. R.
Love this place its like a hidden gem and its a sun trap love the upstairs balcony
H.
Lovely atmosphere and really friendly, enthusiastic staff. Drinks are expensive compared to local prices, but there is a good selection.
I. W.
Great little bar with friendly staff and a good selection of Belgian beers which is just what we were looking for. Definitely go back on our next visit to Durham.
M. C.
Nice pub plenty of choice very full but found seats outside
F. H.
So much choice and such a great venue.
G. N.
Disappointed with the Belgian Beer selection, it used to be wonderful. Also no Belgian on tap when I visited. Pizza was okay. Onion rings were excellent though beautiful light batter.
A. P.
Stumbled on this place. Open Mike night every second Wednesday. Wow what a gem of a place
C. A.
Fantastic bar, like every over head of steam, it gets brownie points for being hidden and having a quirky signage 😀
J. T.
Always a great bar with friendly service from the team.
A. M.
10/10 Tom is a great member of staff made my night. Very friendly and great service all around.
T. W.
First visit ..large terrace and well set up outside for sitting in sunshine,.
T. C.
There was a good atmosphere in the pub and they served gluten free lager on tap, which made it even better.
T.
Always a great laugh and great beer, lovely atmosphere and happy staff.
k.
Good pub it saved my life
B. S.
Loved this little place in Durham.
Visually appealing and delicious food!
The choices, presentation, ambience, taste and service - all really good.
a. r.
It's a pub for families and singles people. It has a beautiful place outside with tables and chairs.
G. W.
Lovely quiet n chilled bar that is hid away .
S.
Really enjoy coming here, always has good music on anytime i've visited and I am always made to feel welcome here. Also has a really nice atmosphere.
D. M.
Have one in Tynemouth and this one has even more beer!
Crisps are expensive (£1.45) a bag!
Beer was grand and menu looks fairly decent.
Takes American Express.
Has baby changing.
N. G.
Interesting back street pub with good selection of craft beers and unusual pizzas
K. H.
Centrally located close to the bus station this pub is popular with locals for good reason. Our family and friends occupied the first floor on Saturday and enjoyed a terrific afternoon and evening here. Also good food menu choices, the pizza range is very good value for money. Will return!
D. C.
Great place to meet up with a wide selection of beers and has a friendly atmosphere
S. M.
Fabulous range of beers. Nice pub. Recommended.
M. L.
Hidden gem! Lovely beer and good menu. Food was nice and service was excellent. Hubby got pizza, he said it was delicious and I had burger, that was also spot on. Onion rings also tasty. Definitely worth a visit.
C. M.
Canny little bar and the staff were brilliant. There was a guy came up to the bar who was clearly having a bad time and feeling distressed, the staff were very sympathetic and offering to talk if he needed someone 👍
G. W.
I like this pub as the drink selection is good, especially the IPA drinks that I like, lots of seating outside in lane and on upper terrace, definitely worth a visit
C. W.
Nicely decorated and in a great location off North Road. Not sure if upstairs is always open but if it is check it out. Nice outdoor seating up there. I would definitely suggest popping in here when visiting Durham. Food at buffet was OK but not out of this world. Good selection of beers.
M. d.
Nice spot with good music and a great variety of drinks to top it off. Service can be a bit hit and miss and it is relatively pricey but still worth a visit.
H. W.
Very nice bar with good selection of beers, although not cheap.
A group of us decided to do the Pizza challenge, 1 hour notice required according to the web site, but when we arrived we were told is was not available as it took too much time and effort to arrange - why advertise it if they can't be bothered to do it, or is it just to lure customers in and flog then something cheaper and easier.
Very disappointed, will not be going back for food.
R.
Great service and better food! Loved my experience here. Had a fabulous burger. Beer was not priced bad as well. They took care of 16 of us and did it smoothly! Not an easy task when you have 13 college kids! So staff was friendly and courteous to our needs and concerns. Pleasant experience and would go back again in a heartbeat!
g. d.
Great bar, loads of beer choice, knowledgeable bar staff and even some live music! What's not to like ...
H. G.
Fabulous bar. Great drinks, unreal food and sound staff. Such a chill place, love it so much!
C. R.
Great bar, excellent range of beers, particularly Belgian. Excellent customer focused service too
p. l.
Wonderful bar. Fantastic food. Brilliant atmosphere. Friendly staff. It has a function room upstairs which you can hire for party's and events. It is available both day and night. It also has a veranda upstairs which has tables and chairs that are in use in summer. Nothing better than sitting in the sunshine outside enjoying a ice cold drink. Free Wi-Fi available. Immaculate toilets. Baby changing and disabled toilet also.
W. P.
Staff great when they aren't having their own social club but I have to say with 2 price rises in the same year, can't you sort out the ladies toilets? Been like this 2 years or more but I hear the staff had a good pay rise? Too many staff btw, just need to be more efficient. Look after your regular customers if you want them to stay for more than one drink! Photos available of state of toilets today and they haven't been any better for months if not years!
S. H.
This was a favourite on our visits to Durham for the cocktails. They've changed the cocktail menu, not as good. Thought we'd give the place another try. Asked the barman for a cocktail menu, had a browse and went to the bar to order, can't do cocktails the barman said, did he not know this when he gave me the menu? The reason, no ice. For a busy bar not to be stocked up with ice seems a bit odd
J. M.
Considering the restrictions we find our selves living with my my self and my wife had a great afternoon in the Head of Steam in Durham. Food was great and the service was excellent. Great beer. Well worth a visit.
S. B.
Great to allow dogs in and good food. All good till they served me a pint that cost £9.95!! So shocked, I didn't complain.... My fault. Couldn't finish the pint either....too strong!!! (They did let me taste it..... So again..... My fault!!) But overall good
L. C.
Drinks are a bit pricey but you'll struggle not to find a drink you won't like in here. They've got a huge variety of drinks available, the food they serve is brilliant too.
You can enjoy a drink outside on the balcony area soaking in the sun, or just sit inside.
E. M.
Proper pub with pleasant staff, a decent pint and a nice steak.
S. D.
Fantastic place,up a side street bit definitely worth a visit. Rece behind the bar is a top bloke & certainly knows his stuff!!!. Fully recommend.
k. s.
Best bar in Durham. Very good atmosphere with good music. The people working there are very friendly. Wide variety of beers. I don't think they serve food as i always go there for the drinks. It is a must if you visit Durham
M. W.
Lovely bar very close to both the train and bus stations. Amazing range of draft and bottled beers and great atmosphere. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. Recommended if you're visiting Durham.
N. S.
Has a good range of beers and ciders on tap, bottled and canned. Staff are generally knowledgeable about the drinks and there is something to suit every palate (and budget). They also have a good selection of whisk(e)ys.
A. P.
I would say that the head of steam has the best beer selection in Durham. They have friendly and knowledgeable staff. The outdoor patio is a great place to have a drink with friends. A little bit pricey but worth the experience.
S. B.
Outstanding beer selection and knowledgeable staff to recommend them to you. They also have delicious burgers here... Some of the best in Durham. A nice hidden gem for a young and local scene.
T. M.
It's a fantastic selection of beers with an emphasis on European and craft beers. But it is very expensive by big chain prices ...a large can of craft ale can set you back £8 or a litre bottle of a listed chimay £20 or a lot more . Food is no more than average it's a place to go and enjoy some of the best beers in the world but be willing to pay accordingly.
M. S.
Best selection of craft beers in Durham. Pizzas are really good too. Not a huge amount of indoor seating sadly. Also very expensive for the city. Looking at typically £3.50-4 per pint, a lot more for the craft beers
I. K.
My first pint was not good and the staff provided a different beer which was excellent. The first beer should not have been offered in the first place and the staff said that there had a problem with it. I was surprised, as Head of Steam pubs are normally better than this.
M. N.
Magnificent selection of bottled beers, quite a few on the draught selection as well. It's a bit hidden away and usually not too busy. The music, eclectic alternative rock selection, can get a bit loud later in the evening.
P. C.
Durham’s little slice of craft beer heaven. You want different beers then this is for you, just off the Main Street and out of the way, seek it out 👍🏻
k. n.
Boxing day we called in and had a few drinks as you do..( It's christmas😊) we had a teapot of Hendrix Gin..wow their presentation was lovely, served in a teapot and teacups and saucers! They Really know how to make their customers feel welcome. Lovely place!
G. B.
Excellent service 10 out not used to there beer but its nice
P. O.
If ever a venue was worthy of a 5 star this would be it. Extensive selection of fine ales and a varied cocktail menu to boot. Gin teapot is a must. Soundtrack energetic but not too "boom boom". Inviting and relaxed ambiance with friendly knowledgable staff. Strong sign decor which is always something I look for in a drinking establishment. A real jewel in the crown of Durham.
L. W.
Have yet to try the food although it looked great. Staff are real accomodating, friendly and know their products.
S. B. (.
Nice bar, the staff are mostly fantastic but 1 or 2 are very rude and will openly be openly aggressive, so much so the manager asked us to leave politely because the staff member in question was taking a tantrum. Management was decent though, we took our time leaving and where not rushed but other than that 1 guy this place is a good atmosphere with varied drinks and friendly staff.
J. M.
Great pub huge selection of beers a bit quiet so game 4 stars but it was Monday afternoon
N. W.
My favorite place to go for drinks in durham. Staff can recommend anything if the mountain of choice is too much for you to pick from. Great music choices (classic rock and metal all night long), and a great atmosphere.
F. R.
Enjoyable event with Brooklyn brewery. Staff cheery and knowledgeable about drinks.
E. W.
Great prices and good service but the lights are a little low and i almost hit my head on them
A. B.
Great example of the Head of Steam chain. Wide selection of beers for all tastes and well stocked fridges for the more adventurous. Large place, nice decor. Grill food available.
D. S.
Not many places in Durham like this one. If you're looking for a place to enjoy good beer while having good time with friends, this is the place. It's not crowded, the seats are nicely positioned. Music is good, the vibe is good.
N. W.
Nice range of ale but the bar staff seemed too keen to go home!
M. H.
Best Bar in Durham.
The selection of beers is excellent and priced high enough that it keeps out the students and the wetherspoons crowd to some degree. The food is fantastic and very reasonably priced and the bar staff know their beers and give great reccomendations.
Really enjoy this place despite the number of hangovers I have developed as a result of it.
K. R. J.
Nice range of drinks and ok food. The burger was canny and reasonably priced. I wanted the three bean chilli burrito but they hadn't got enough left. Another time perhaps. Atmosphere was nice in there.
K. S.
Absolutely loved it. The bar staff were proper lads from the North East. Very chatty and funny. Great beer. Great staff. Had a really good time.
J. C.
It's pretty cool OK! But it's expensive. Wide range of bottled beer which as it turns out are a great deal cheaper at the Waterhouse up the road. Lots of middle class students - the working class one's can't afford the place.
t. s.
Good food and wide range of beer
A. J.
Great range of craft, hand pull, bottles and cans. Quite pricey though
M. D.
One of my favourite pubs in Durham. Not the cheapest but a huge selection of different beers. The courtyard is a nice suntrap when the weather is good!
F.
Great pub with lots of choice in beers.
L. B.
Popped in here for a couple pints and a couple bags of crisps, service was quick, the gent was very polite and nothing seemed a bother, lovely little place
M. M.
Two identical rounds, two different prices. The staff didn't seem to have a clue what beers they had on, ones they did suggest were out. Seemed really disorganised. The draft beer choice was pretty limited which is odd for a Head of Steam, almost felt like I'd entered a knockoff version.
G. R.
Dog friendly. Wide variety of world beers, especially Belgian. Can't comment on food as kitchen was shut due to electrical problems, menu looked good though.
I. F.
Funky bar that sells a great range of beers. The walls and ceiling are covered in beer mats and trays from around the world so it just adds the the funkiness. There is an outside seating area and an upstairs area. Put this on your list if your drinking round Durham.
P. G.
Great atmosphere and a fantastic selection of beers. Friendly bar staff. Good place to relax and chat without being blasted with music endlessly!
M. G. L.
Great pub, great selection of beers and ales, and very friendly staff who will let you try and will advise you on the best beer/ale to have. Fully recommended!
R.
Great selection of beers (world, craft, handpull and tap), friendly staff, nice atmosphere. You might pay a bit more for a beer here but I've never had a duff one yet.
D. C.
The food portions are huge and the beer selection is better than any other bar in Durham but it is very expensive
S.
Great pub, nice atmosphere with friendly staff. It has a very nice, chilled atmosphere, just a shame you can't pick the pub up and move it from North Road as it sometimes like the wild west!
M. F.
Friendly and relaxed place for a drink with friends.
y.
Love this place, great selection of drinks for all over!
Food is amazing and the atmosphere is always fab.
Defo a recommend for anyone who's in Durham.
M. D.
Really good selection of beers.. Need to go again just to try more. Music was fantastic and it was busy but comfortable still. Very good find will be going again
D. S.
A fantastic choice of beers, nice food and friendly staff. Very nice.
H. w.
Nice pub. Greatif you love heavy music. Nice and trendy. Ordered Vegan chicken by mistake. But it was ok. Fries. Very tasty . 🍺 🍺
S. U.
Relaxed vibe, not too busy, great music, free WiFi and loads of sockets to charge devices! Productive couple of hours spent on a rainy afternoon plus I was fed and watered. Also been here socially - it isn't as cheap as 'the chains' but it is definitely worth visiting.
C. S.
Fantastic place to be parked while the other half is shopping. Lovely cold beer with pleasent staff. Only issue which could easily be solved is disabled access. Please reduce or put a slope in at the main door.
d.
One of my favourite places in Durham excellent selection of bottled and draft beers from around the world although not the cheapest of places the sheer quality of the beers on offer more than makes up for it
B. S.
Best place great beer. Amazing staff. Didn't have the food but it looked great. Only disappointment is that they closed at 12.
E. R.
An incredible selection of beers on offer (draught and cask ales), as well as tasty foods. The bar staff were also very friendly, an a great help in choosing a beer!
S. E.
Nice bar, friendly staff. Good outdoor seating areas. Well worth a visit if you're in the toon
S. G.
A cool gastropub located in a secluded alley way. The Head of Steam serves a huge range of beers and ales and has a relaxed vibe. There is outdoor seating both in the courtyard and on a verandah on the second floor. The staff are kind and helpful.
S. J.
Staff are friendly and prices reasonable
I. T.
Nice bar with a wide range of drinks including many foreign beers. Some of the drinks can be on the expensive side so be warned, but overall definitely worth a visit
P. G.
Best beer selection in Durham, and the food is pretty good. Busy Friday and Saturday but can be more relaxed during the week.
C. A. D. L.
Great ale
D. T.
Great staff and service in a relaxed environment in the centre of Durham City
I. B.
lovely pub, lovely beer and lovely staff. myself and my wife will be visiting again
D. W.
Great beers and superb staff
D. K.
Great beers. Good atmosphere.
L. W.
The food is always lovely here, and the selection of beers and cocktails will keep us busy for a long time getting around to trying them all.
F. J.
Expensive for a pint ,nice place 🍺🍺🍺🍺
I. G.
Great choice of beer. Knowledgeable staff. Nice atmosphere. Best pub in Durham.
W. B.
Amazing food and friendly staff! Good selection of beers too
c.
The only bad points are the slightly steep prices and that it's a bit small. There's a great selection of beers (lager and real ale) and the outside area is lovely.
C. D.
Nice atmosphere, great selection of beers and much better now upstairs is open so less crammed.
J. N.
Solid pub, good music but not too loud. Decore is a little generic. Reasonable prices, good selection on tap
C. J.
My husband did a gig here and the service was first class. I would recommend them to anyone.
M. J.
