Reviews of Ye Old Elm Tree
P. M.
Fantastic pub with a trendy crowd and great range of beers. Great atmosphere and a cosy fire
M. F.
One of the best "classic" pubs in Durham. Good atmosphere with brick walls and some eclectic decoration pieces. Usually a good range of beers from Keg or Cask which are often from local breweries. Pub quiz on Wednesday is very good but it tends to get quite packed on those days.
S. M.
Best bar in Durham. Second to none. Great selection of ales, lagers and ciders. Very accommodating and the atmosphere cannot be beaten. Not many proper pubs like this left in Durham!
M. O.
Friendly place with outdoor seating in a lovely part of Durham city. Lots of choice on tap for real ale enthusiasts.
C. W.
Visiting today with some friends, very good atmosphere very friendly staff and dog friendly! Not many dog friendly places left in Durham, we were greeted with a treat and a water bowl! They also have Timothy Taylor’s on constantly rotating between there 5 beers!❤️
P. M.
Brilliant pub. Went last year with 3 pals for the England v Ukraine football match. 3 lasses served us to our table and looked after us all night. Even my Ukrainian mate loved it, loved the ambience and friendly banter. Quality pub. Quality.
c. t.
Great dog friendly pub just up from North road. Nice outdoor beer garden at the back.
J. k. (.
Really good beer both choice and quality, dog friendly, cosy place with good staff. Serves food and snacks, regulars are a friendly bunch recommended for all 🖒🖒
N. B.
Friendly and lovely place for a drink either before visiting the centre or after a day of shopping.
g. b.
We called in for a quick drink and stayed for quite a while friendly Thomas/Tom behind the bar certainly knew his real ales. Got chatting to quite a few people. A most enjoyable afternoon
S. D.
Really good atmosphere with proper, real ale. Could even take the dog inside as they were very dog friendly. Staff were super friendly and there was even some live music!
A. F.
Beer is nice, but they haven't served food for years.
A. S.
Just off main high Street. Great place occasionally spoiled by uni students. But hey-ho that's Durham for you.
A. M.

J. E.
This is lovely atmospheric local, with friendly bar staff and a very good choice of beer. It is a pub that you immediately feel at home in and now that I have found it, I will definitely be adding it to my must visit pubs, when in the area.

M. S.

A. I.
Very friendly staff and good selection of beers. Also dog friendly 😊
J. P.
Good selection of beers and not as crowded as most pubs in the main roads as a little walk up a side street.
D.
Lovely old pub with great beer and good service
D. G.
One of the best pubs in Durham, great beer selection, friendly staff and plenty of character.
A. H.
Excellent beer. Huge choice of ales and lagers too. Nice "old fashioned" pub. It also had a really nice stove that helps to deliver a cosy ambience. The toilet could be upgraded a wee bit, hence four stars.
D. S.
I looked for a dog-friendly pub serving food in Durham city centre and found the best one. A lovely warm welcome (for us and the dog alike), delicious and ample Sunday carvery lunch, fine selection of quality beers and to top it all off, outstanding value too, even by a Yorkshireman's standards. Will definitely return to this five-star establishment.
P. B.
Fantastic bar in Durham serving a fine selection of real ales with a large seating area outside at the back. Bar staff are always wonderful.
A. S.
Great pub quiz on Wednesday nights.
G. N.
Great selection of beer and friendly staff
G. L.
Love this pub, good beer, good people, good outside space weather permitting
A. F.
Genuinely friendly local pub near the centre of Durham. Popped in as strangers for first time and were met with friendly chat from the barman and older gentlemen regulars gathered there at lunchtime. They recommended i ask for a taster before selecting my drink. I went for a York Chocolate Stout. Good range of interesting bears. Paninis at luchtime. Sunday lunch carvery was recommended by the staff. Will come back to try. My wife and i enjoyed a relaxing hour there before continuing our day in and around Durham.
F. S. P. O.
Good selection of beer and gins, and the menu is also very diverse and with something for all tastes. You can even take home some of your favourite beer. Great atmosphere and dog-friendly as well.
K. A.
A warm welcome and good food and beer is on tap here. The atmosphere is always friendly. Staff are brilliant. Outside the back of the pub is a smoking area with heating. The craik out there is awesome.
J. T.
Great pub that I have frequently used button my last visit it was so full it was impossible to find room to stand and enjoy a drink without being in someone's way. Consequently this also made for very slow service at the bar. I can only assume that because an England international rugby match was being shown at the time that this was the reason for all the extra customers.
E.
Still one of my favourite Durham pubs. Been going there for more than 40 years and still love it. Hasn't changed a lot and thats the charm.
C. M.
Great cosy, but busy pub, had a good hour or so here and would seek it out next visit
J. C.
Lovely pub just off north road, not too far from the centre of town or the station. Good selection of drinks, nice food and an excellent quiz on Wednesday at 9pm.
M. M.
One of my favourite pubs in Durham. Very good selection of tab beers. Plenty of nice memories. Good food served daily. Reasonably priced.
S. W.
Always a quality pint. Free jukebox just about still going after all these years 😆
S. J.
Pleasant pub with friendly staff and old world feel. Would be better with old style real ales ( eg Black Sheep, Doom Bar etc.).
S. B.
I like this pub, I meet up with friends every once in a while there about once a month. It's good.
G. H.
Very welcoming pub, good beer, nice staff, other pub goers friendly. Went here and stayed all afternoon with friends.
A. H.
Great traditional pub inside and out, excellent selection of beers on the bar with reasonably priced pub food
R. S.
What a nice pub. Great range of beers and very nice German largers on tap. Good reasonably priced food. Very friendly staff and locals. Dog friendly. Child friendly. What's not to like?
R. A.
Lovely atmosphere. Allows dogs. Nice food. Better than all the other pubs in the city centre. Durham is not a dog friendly place. But Ye Old Elm Tree is the place to be luv yas x
k. w.
Visited on a day out to Durham after reading reviews. Old style pub. Nice food for lunch. Homemade pizza and sweet potato fries. Bit of a steep walk up hill to get there.
J. M. M.
A very friendly pub served by mellisa hope the spelling is correct. Could not fault the place. 2 dogs in the bar, so very dog friendly 👍 service and hospitality excelled. Can't wait until next bank holiday
A. J.
Whenever I visit I am reminded of what a British pub should be. Good beer, good staff, good company. And when you need it good food. If more pubs were like YOET there would be fewer closing.
P. w.
Took my granddaughter for Sunday lunch. Met my family there, as they eat there every Sunday. As she's only 3,we shared my dinner. Very tasty, not worth the bother to cook your own. Very reasonably priced.
R.
This is a traditional pub with a friendly atmosphere and good selection of quality ales. The food is of a high standard and staff are nice. It's a great place if you want to relax in good company.
G. C.
Went for a dinner, the location is not very cured but the atmosphere is warm.
The service has not been great, the waiters noticed our presence after a long time.
The food was good, but the risotto with peas and haddock disappointed me a lot! ( not balanced, not good cooked, a little disaster)
The desserts were very nice...ice cream affogato al caffe e amaretto...che delizia!
M. S.
This is a marvelous pub good beer , friendly and efficient staff and today the bar staff went out of their way to organise a lift to A & E for a regular who suffered a severe nose bleed. I think she is called Stacy. Excellent customer care and a lovely atmosphere why go anywhere else?
N. L.
