Reviews of Barony Bar
D. C.
A lovely bar! We went for the pub quiz and it was brilliant. Staff were friendly, the bar was clean, there was a fire and the décor is lovely.
A good and calm vibe.
Drinks are a bit expensive and drinks need to be poured a bit better -amounts are meagre. For example, a Malibu and coke (small glass) are poured half-full with coke-on-tap.
This is why it's a 4 star review not 5
A. K.
Nice bar with some awesome live music. We went there twice. Friday nice with live music was actually awesome, which made us come back on Sunday evening for a dinner. And as long as fish and meat was delicious - potatoes served with it were frozen, that’s why there is only 3 stars.
L. M.
The best Sunday pub lunch I’ve had in Edinburgh! Every element was delicious and the selection was excellent.
From 3pm on Sunday they have live music which is a lovely background to the meal too, not too disruptive.
The only reason I dropped a star is because as we were first into the bar, it had a clear Saturday night bar clean up smell which wasn’t nice. Helped when more people came in.
K. P.
Nice bar & friendly staff. Enjoyed the barony beer. We had mushroom arancini & the haggis balls. The arancini was great. The haggis balls were okay, friend really like them but I wasn’t really as keen. Thought they looked much better than they tasted.
J. G.
Phenomenal pub. Great food. Superb staff. Amazing atmosphere.
Went in with a group of friends for food and drinks with a group of friends on Saturday night. I had the steak and ale pie, the pie was more than generously filled and the veg was cooked to perfection. One of my friends was vegetarian so she ordered the Plant-based Haggis Wellington, again a very generous portion and she couldn’t stop complimenting the quality of the haggis.
The staff were extremely friendly providing us with banter and entertainment as behind the bar was filled with laughter.
We were fortunate enough to stay for the live music which caused the pub to come alive. Everyone was singing and dancing in their seats.

Cool Pub. Great live music, good whisky, great sunday roast, cool owner.. loved it!

We went here on a Monday evening for some food and drinks and also stayed for the occasional pub quiz.
Food was very delicious although quite pricey. Staff very friendly and accommodating.
D. T.
Goos beer selection. Friendly staff. Good small menu, that they do a good job on. Check their daily specials. It's a dog friendly bar, so expect to meet four legged friends
J. R.
Rather cramped main bar where the tables for diners are too small and close together. We had booked a table for 4 but couldn't order a meal because the electricity kept going off in the kitchen in the basement.
J. W.
Nice bar in Edinburgh's New Town. Clientele is a bit hip for me but they have a great range of cask ale.
J. S.
One of the nicest and most authentic pubs I've ever been too. Food and prices are solid. The biggest plus: no TVs!!
M. C.
Good food and drinks .and dog friendly!!
M. T.
Believe this is primarily a bar but did not drink as i had an early flight. Food here is great, tried the soup, pear sorbet with plum crumble, fish and chips.
Last night in Edinburgh and the food did not disappoint.
S. S.
Not your sterotypical local pub. Looks like a typical pub from the outside, but just a wee bit more upscale decor inside. The patrons looked more like local couples grabbing a pint or tea than typical pub regulars. Prices are about the same as a typical pub, but while the food is typical pub fare, it is also more upscale. The chips aren't thick, but thinner skin-on and perfectly fried. The peas that came with the fish and chips weren't sad little green pebbles, but wonderfully flavoured and accessorized with tasty radish slices. We had a romantic table in the corner by a window and would definitely reserve it for a special date night.
K. B.
I tried the Plant-based Macsween’s haggis and it was delicious. The staff is really friendly. A good place that I recommend.
J. H.
Great Cod & Chips and quick service. Friendly staff. Not keen on seeing non-assistance dogs in where food is being served.
N. C.
Had a great afternoon here relaxing with family and our granddaughter. Became busy as the afternoon tired to evening with a great mix of ages and dog friendly too.
R.
Phenomenal place, very welcoming staff and a lovely little venue complete with a fire to keep everyone warm, got a ribeye steak rare and was cooked to perfection which went perfect with a great pint of IPA, nothing bad to say about this place and would highly recommend everyone to go!
C. B.
We are spending the weekend in Edinburgh for the first time and were looking last minute for a place to eat near the hotel tonight. We managed to get a table here but didn't know what to expect. It turned out to be a great choice: we loved the victorian features in the pub, staff were very friendly, food was excellent and drinks went down very nicely! There was also a live band playing blues music which created a great atmosphere. Would recommend!!!
j. c.
amazing place staff very friendly really cosy pub and food was lovely. well worth a look in whilst in edingburugh

A. R. (.
Great place to drink in, but not so good place to eat at, especially as a vegetarian. The food menu is overpriced
N. A.
Solid little bar with good food and service. Nice selection of beers
E. B.
Excellent service from mine host Les. Top notch pub grub.
Fantastic food and drinks.
T. O.
Great place for a drink and a meal. Staff are friendly and helpful. Good atmosphere in the bar. Can be a bit noise at times. Downside is that they don't do have a kids menus
A. P.
Great pub, live jazz every Sunday, good beers and food okay. Its under new management but still same atmosphere
D. A.
Very pleasant staff and clientelle. Good beer at reasonable prices. Excellent selection of beers for all tastes.
G. R.
Fantastic meal on our trip to Edinburgh. Highly recommend.
T. L.
pleasant local bar, modernised, waitresses nice and helpful. Fish and chips average, sausages very good, got a bit stiffed on entree, Not as good as Ox but better than Broughton Bar. Accessible loos for disabled.
C. H.
Fantastic to see the Barony back open again. A Broughton St institution that was well missed and was feared it wouldn't reopen post lockdown(s). Understood to be under new management but retaining its old charm. Staff were lovely and great to see a better selection of craft beer options now that (presumably) the bar isn't hamstrung by being tied into an unprofitable supply arrangement with mainstream supplier. Look forward to visit regularly again!

Old school pub. Thankfully unspoilt interior
Pleasant atmosphere and friendly welcome from staff
Plus an open fire
W. S.
Excellent food and service nice pub well worth a visit 👍
K. M.
Great find, a local Edinburgh bar selling a variety of real ales & lagers on draught. Lovely atmosphere & a friendly welcome from the landlord.
G. M.
Nice vibe this evening but I hunger for the live music which made this pub a broughton st attraction.
J. L.
Lovely atmosphere and staff! Family friendly, tasty meal!
T. B.
Great local pub atmosphere! Best fish finger sandwich I've ever eaten. Friendly helpful team behind the bar. Loved it!
H. K.
A cozy pub with very nice food. I had fried prawns, it was really good and I want to come back to try all other ones.
R. A.
Worth seeing, good bar food and staff
a. b.
So pleased to have this at the end of our road while staying in Edinburgh. Became our favorite place to eat and drink. Great food. Great choice of drinks. Great staff.
a. n.
Nice place with helpful staff. Good local pub.
C. N.
Gorgeous burger and lovely atmosphere. I really enjoyed my burger - it was very moist and tasty and the fries were delicious. Lots of chat going on and the background music wasn't too loud. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Will definitely be back.
J. S.
Great place, friendly staff, good food and scotch selection
T. E.
Excellent pub, brilliant food and awesome staff. Live music at weekend a place for all ages. Great night out 😁😁😁
K. P.
Live music on Sunday evenings.
Also known for it's great food!
L. G.
Quiz night has returned on a Monday night from 8.30pm. Great range of cask, craft, and regular beers, with a new food menu introduced as well.
A.
Great, traditional bar - variety of live music, good food and friendly staff. What's not to like?
w. c.
Very warm and welcoming pub, friendly staff and great food
S. M.
Great pub experience and extremely dog friendly! Good choices for drinks. The food was good, mushroom soup was delicious, tons of mussels in a good sauce. Extras on the burger were a bit tiny for the price, but we just can't complain since everything tasted good. Such an authentic pub feel and delicious food - makes us happy that this is our local pub :)
Z. O.
We had a great time at Barony. The cheese plate was fantastic and the beer and whiskey flowed.
N. B.
Lovely beers and good food
F. B.
Quite decent number of beers, and the one we got recommended by the waitress was perfect. Fish wasn't all that, but fast and served with nice sides. Will definitely come back for drinks. Cozy atmosphere and the staff treat you well even though you are a tourist.
R. B.
Very quiet when we were in , friendly staff
E. S.
Great atmosphere....Great to be in an old Edinburgh pub again....
S. S.
Looks like it been taken over, might be wrong but this is a lovely really old bar, the mirrors are stunning the actual bar itself is amazing 👏 loved it
K. O. -. A.
Perfect spot to pop in not far from our hotel, they are serving delicious pub food. Genuine Steak & Ale pie with that baked crust of goodness. The Fish & Chips was perfect AND they were really friendly. We love that. Check them out!
M. H.
Great independent pub with good wines, beers and food too.
It's used by plenty of local people and friendly staff add to the casual atmosphere.
Regular live music too - but be warned that as it's a tiny place the music precludes conversation!
M. M.
I had the fish and chips and it was absolutely delicious. The service was amazing and they had great local drinks. Would definitely recommend! It was so good we ended up coming back the next night and having the same thing!!
R. H.
We were looking for an authentic Scottish pub and were very happy to find the Barony. We were greeted by the owner who obviously has a great passion for his business. The local beer selection was ample and well served. But for me the best part was the steak and onion pie that was probably the best meat pie I've ever eaten. savory with a beautiful flaky crust glazed and scored. I can't remember a time when I enjoyed something so much and I am a real foodie. I highly recommend this atmospheric pub.
J. B.
Great pub. Traditional vibe and good atmosphere. Music lively but not so loud that you can't talk. Friendly staff and drinks served in heavy crystal type glasses with crystal glass candlelight. 😀 Too few of this style of pub now in my opinion. 👍
A. B.
Great pub, really nice food
B. S.
Quiet clean smell fresh happy vibes
W. N.
Very nice small pub with a good atmosphere and food. Would certainly visit again.
C. V.
A great traditional pub with a good selection of beers and ales on tap (and whiskies too). Has the features of a classic pub preserved and highlighted with a lot of taste. The atmosphere can vary between quiet and cosy, and more busy with some live music acts. I like to go there for drinks and soak up the atmosphere rather than food but the menu is still a good classic pub menu.
L. K.
My favorite cozy pub in Edinburgh. Feels like you can sink back into the chair and sink back in time. No tvs around, so a nice retreat on game days. Friendly service, Excellent food, great options on drinks, always activities on through out the week. Can't go wrong with this place.
S. f. A.
We walked in by chance and the staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful, found a table for our party, discussed gins for a good while most happily and served us some truly amazing food. The experience was so good we were back a couple of days later and the food was even better. Highly recommended.
F. B.
Excellent food, particularly the gravy served with the pie.
R. M.
Absolutely amazing service, vibrant atmosphere and great food, I have never had a bad night in there. Hats off to the staff who are all so lovely and patient, even during the pub quiz which is a really good laugh. One night whilst waiting alone and couldn't decide on wine, they even gave me a taste of a couple of favourites! Felt so at home even whilst waiting, this classic and chilled bar is perfect for a cosy night.
R. A.
This is a nice traditional Edinburgh Bar with good beer and food.. It's generally quite busy, which might explain the demeanor of the staff! It's so obviously not their own business.. They were all quite miserable and in one instant, pretentious & arrogant. It wasn't like that on any of my previous visits.. Thankfully, Bar staff change regularly.. but it will be a while before I'll be back!
A. S.
Super knowledgable and took the time to make a good beer recommendation for me and whiskey recommendation for my partner. The food at the other table made me tempted to ditch our dinner reservation - smelled and looked amazing. Good music, good vibes, good drinks.
E. V.
This bar should be a priority in your visit to Edinburgh! The food was incredible, the bar frequently has live (amazing) music and the customer service was absolutely wonderful! I visited on a Saturday, had an amazing lunch as suggested by my waiter, and he recommended I come back at 3 for live music which was fantastic! Wish I could stay in town and eat here every day!
J. S.
A really nice pub with a great atmosphere. The food is delicious and the service is friendly. It gets busy so if you want dinner probably best to book. We had the pie and the mac and cheese and both were very good.
C. M.
I've been coming to this bar for 25 years which I think says a lot. Its not a noisy, trendy, up its own backside kind of place: its a proper old Edinburgh pub that serves a good pint. Its a place to escape, a place where you can reflect over a quiet pint in the afternoon, or enjoy a faster pace in the evening. 25 years have gone by and I hope I'm still dropping in for a pint of IPA in another 25 years.
K. G.
Great atmosphere, service and food.
F. C.
I loved it! Great food, and good selection of real ale. Staff really warm and friendly. On a Tue evening, I also enjoyed excellent live folk music. A true gem in Edinburgh!!
J. E.
Fantastic food and Service. They have a great selection of scotch and beers, and the food menu wont disappoint. one of my favourite restaurants in broughton. Had the cod on my most recent outing there and it was fantastic. Also as i mention before the service is fantastic. very ontop of getting you what you need or checking in, Oh and extremely nice.
N. R.
Traditional pub with nice range of beers and live music - a good Saturday night out.
G. G.
Like the look and feel of this place. And despite the absence of Blue Moon, pretty decent range of beers. Excellent food at pretty decent prices.
Dog friendly too, so that was handy!
m. i. t. l. o. r.
Really enjoyed the feel and staffs happy faces and service!
M. F.
I had a great time because of the friends I was with. I think it's a good pub for ale drinkers. All classes, noisy plenty debatable conversations with the drinkers. Warm welcoming atmosphere
L. S.
Brilliant fish and chips. Haggis balls also amazing.
L. D. S.
The Barony is a no fuss old school pub tucked away on Broughton Street. The decor is dark wood paneling with some very rustic furniture, all making a very relaxed atmosphere. As you would expect from a pub like this the selection of beers was decent with a good selection of regional ales. The food was decent, leaning much more towards quantity than quality. In all it stands out from the crowd with its decent selection of beers and value for money.
E. U.
Great fish and chips. Service was friendly
R. M.
The Barony is a friendly, local bar situated not far from the new town and within 10 minutes walk of Princes Street. The bar food is tasty enough and fairly cheap - It's not exceptional, but it's certainly a cut above the many chain bars that charge similar prices. If you're a regular the place really takes on a life of its own with friendly staff, special events, parties and live music. The selection of beers is decent and if you like a good pub quiz be sure to get yourself along on a Monday night. A cut above your average bar, the atmosphere on a busy night really gives this place a life of its own.
B. M.
Good boozer with trad pub grub. They have real ale ( or craft as they like to refer to it these days) No blaring TVs so you come here to drink, chat, eat!
S. B.
Always a good choice of beer, nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Food is well made pub grub so always goes down a treat when the mood takes.
D. S.
I stumbled on this super old bar while looking for somewhere to have dinner. Superb Scottish fates, including Cullen skink and great steak pie and lovely friendly service. Highly recommended.
M. B.
The bar is situated in a beautiful place with a pleasant and origin look. I and my girlfriend enjoyed a stay very much. Besides the great selection of ales it is the food what makes this bar worth to visit and come back again.
K. S.
Have visited a few times with my friend for after work drinks. Last time i ordered a coffee and was brought a cafetiere with a chocolate biscuit on the side! I liked! We shared a fish and chips and they were kind enough to put them on two different plates, both were sizeable as you can see from my uploaded photos, so imagine how large one portion would be!
Really friendly service from the bar staff and the Pinot Grigio is very drinkable. Overall, a nice, old school pub close to the city centre.
C. G.
I am not a regular but drop in if I am in the area. I cannot comment on the food but the ambience and choice of drinks is typical of a good local pub.
D.
Historic and traditional pub. Great for a quiet drink and food, good selection of beers and spirits and menu is great quality without being too unreasonable price wise. Staff were very pleasant and helpful.
V. K.
Nice place with good music. It's a good pub to go with a group of friends.
Yesterday there was a lovely little white dog 🐕 she is adorable ❤️
K. L.
Great traditional Edinburgh pub!!!
J. C.
I came in during a festival weekend around 12am. Most of the revellers had moved on by the time I arrived so there was plenty of seats. The Barony is a casual pub / bar serving food. There is enough stained dark would to choke a donkey and the atmosphere of the place lets you know its been around for a while. Its certainly not a new age, try hard type of place which are very common in the area.
The drinks were reasonably priced for Broughton Street and the normal selection was available. I'd recommend coming here with friends before a night out or just to catch up for a quick drink.
F.
I like old Georgian pubs,I would have given it 5 stars but the "Steak pie" wasnt a "Pie" it was a dish of stew with a puff pastry laid on top plus it cost £16,disappointing but the Staff and Service were excellent
B. H.
Solid pub on boughton.
Try the veggie haggis burger or the salmon salad ~ DELICIOUS!
Always has me coming back.
Great service also.
D. C.
Lovely pub but beer prices slightly above average in Edinburgh! Friendly staff and smart clientele. Will certainly go again!
B. J.
A proper pub 😄 The food is fantastic, and the staff are lovely and so accommodating. Great atmosphere, very chilled out. Highly recommend.
N. D. M.
It had great burgers and fish and chips. The beer selection was really good as well. The staff was really friendly. Great Scottish trad.
S. W.
Visited this pub with a couple of friends one Sunday in early August. We like the pub and often visit it after a Hibs match. This particular Sunday a band called Makossa were playing and they were fabulous - an unusual mix of latin, jazz, funk, soul and reggae. Pub was very busy and atmoshere was buzzing.
N. P.
Good selection of real ales and beer. Friendly staff. Very clean.
H. B.
Cullen Skink and Butternut Squash & Sage soup were unreal. Barony Burger was just as good - service was fast and friendly too! Highly recommend.
k. f.
Fabulous! A little gem off York place. Fabulous food and from Tuesday to Thursday they have live music
Great staff, yummy food, good music! What more do you need
E. F.
Great place with a good selection of food at sensible prices. We'll definitely be back at an earlier time to make sure we can get a table!
0.
Great place with super nice relaxing people. Also sometimes they have jazz bands and it really improves the atmosphere! 5.1 Stars!
J. E.
Nice little pub, plays good music and has a few tables for groups of people. Great selection of drinks, especially cider.
C.
This is a great local, they have live music during the week including traditional music. Wide drinks selection, especially gin and the nachos are good too.
m.
Excellent food and service. 3 tables in the street, mostly indoor seating. Nicely decorated, with live jazz and blues on weekends.
L. F.
Lovely pub. We stopped in on a cold and rainy day. Get the haggis baws and steak pie. Lovely and attentive service. Hope to come visit again.
J. P.
Proper good boozer, nice ale selection and great staff. Keep places like this alive! Good chilled after work place, no fancy stuff and you can always get a seat 👌👌
A. B.
Wonderful food and staff, super friendly. A little loud when busy. Try the sticky toffee pudding it's amazing!
S. F.
The Barony has had a tiny makeover. In a good way for a change. It's basically been given a scrub and a fresh coat of paint. Also the surly can't be arsed staff are gone, replaced by lovely can be arsed staff. Joy.
H. S. (. a. P.
The Barony is a landmark, a traditional pub of tiles and roaring fireplace and mirrors and giant tables and a solid menu of fine pub grub stodge, that calls to me like a siren whenever I’m hungover.
It’s my favourite pub in east Edinburgh to decamp to when a hair of the dog and a decent plate of macaroni cheese, accompanied by a side of onion rings, is called for, nay, demanded by my stinking head.
l. j.
Staff are wonderful. Bar serves great food. Amazing atmosphere, varied age groups.
G.
Fantastic bar, brilliant live bands.. probably the best live music in Edinburgh. Downside, brutal toilets, get them fixed.
I. W.
Fabulous traditional Edinburgh bar. Lovely lunch, warm & friendly service and great surroundings. Great visit with friends.
B. T.
Great place with good selection of beers and spirits. Jazz afternoon on Saturday was amazing. Dog friendly too 👍👍👍
A. M.
Old fashioned pub that deserves a visit if you are a real ale fan, especially if you are after a quiet pint with no distractions from TVs. No TVs is a bonus as is the great food and the live music.
E.
Like so much of Edinburgh it's just beautiful and decadent and cosy and welcoming. All of Broughton is great tbh but The Barony is a treasure. Have the haggis bon bon obviously.
S. W.
No real effort at covid safety, don't go there
J. O.
Top traditional pub with amazing decor and a good selection of drinks. Book ahead if going for dinner.
m. s.
Love coming here for live music on a Sunday night. They have a range of bands and there are plenty of seats, although get there early because it fills up fast!
R. D.
Really nice bar on the trendy Broughton Street, becoming famous for it's independent traders scene. Some good guest beers without going down the hipster route.
r. h.
Best food we have had on our UK holiday so far!
Stumbled across this pub for lunch and it was so impressive that we went back for dinner.
C. D.
Really lovely bar, great food and good selection of beers. A bit out of the festival area, but worth a trip.
J. S.
Delightful, has been for years and might have changed owners and decorations but still great feel, drinks and lovely staff. I'll be back again and again!
J. B.
Lovely pub with good ale selection, decent bar food and often excellent live music
d. r.
Good pub with good range of traditional beers nice friendly noise to people conversation shabby chic look
R. W.
Looks fun, I can't say that I spent much time in here, but I would have no hesitation in making this place for a second time. Th decor is light and open allowing for a large crowds of people to easily come together.
J. H.

Old-style Scottish pub in Broughton St, near to the city centre and Playhouse Theatre..
Good selection of beers, lagers and ciders as well as gins and whiskies.
Friendly. A wee bit on the pricey side, but it is central Edinburgh.
There is occasional live entertainment, but generally it's a good place to just sit and talk.
D. M.
(Translated) This bar pub a little out of the city center of the city of Edinburgh is very nice.
A good selection of draft beers.
Often very busy, it is not always very easy to eat there. So you have to think about booking.
The fish and chips are top notch here.
To do again!

A refaire !

(Translated) great Scottish atmosphere! as soon as you enter, the atmosphere strikes. the setting up and finishing of the restaurant are typical and really nice. the food was really good. try the steack and ale, but also the soup of the day and caramelized pudding, a pleasure for the palate.

(Translated) Went here, seduced by 1 dollar icon (cheap place). As usual, they made a mistake - it wasn’t too cheap by Russian standards, but quite inexpensive by local. Beer about 4-5 pounds, puddings of 6-7 pounds, main dishes of 10-15 pounds. Puddings are really good. Guys work fast, know their assortment, look at the tables. The bar left a good impression, especially 2 ladies with an incredible number of glasses of gin and tonic (and only them) at the table.
(Original)

(Translated) Looking for a place to taste Scottish cuisine, we have chosen this pub thanks to the reviews of other customers.
There were five of us and we ordered fish and chips, auchentoshan crannachan, Cullen skink, black pudding and some vegetarian dishes. All really great, washed down with Edinburgh's Innis & Gunn beer. Absolutely to recommend !!!

(Translated) We went there because it's the only place they still served dinner. The place is very nice, our waitress was just great because of her kindness, simplicity and helpfulness. We also ate and drank well. If I return to Edinburgh, I will also return to the Barony.
This is the first time that I have given 5 stars, it is really a crush.
