Reviews of Bennets Bar
J. G.
Great bar, bit of a local landmark in Tollcross area of Edinburgh, good akes at decent prices, excellent single malt selection, dog friendly pub, still has its distinctive old tables topped with Ordnance Survey maps of Scotland. Handy for drinks after stroll in nearby Meadows, or before and after show at adjacent King's Theatre, or Cameo Cinema across the road
J. H.
Fantastic! Old fashioned Scottish pub.
No frills or food.
Great selection of drinks and friendly staff
G. B.
We thought a review said great 'Old fashions'.But it said great old fashioned pub. So we ordered that drink. Despite this gaffe, the main bar tender set out to prove he can make outstanding Old Fashions. He did!
C. G.
Bennets is an unspoiled pub with interesting décor located in theTollcross area of Edinburgh. It has an excellent beer selection and a very good choice of whiskies. Its prices are average for Edinburgh establishments and it is the sort of place one could spend a few hours with a pint or a good malt reading the paper. It is good to see that this pub is still in business.
R. M.
Love this pub! Proper old-fashioned pub with friendly staff, a good mix of clientele and dog-friendly. Very busy on a Saturday evening, so standing room only, but a very nice experience nonetheless.
G. K.
Has all the good things a pub should have (booze and a nice atmosphere) and none of the things it shouldn't have (idiots getting far to drunk and being annoying). So in my book, it's great.
S. G.
Invited for drinks here by a friend who went to University in Edinburgh in the 90’s, and in his words “one of the few remaining true pubs in the Centre”, and it did not disappoint. This bar is a classic wooden bar with bar staff to boot and match. Still seemed to smell smoky from the days when it was allowed, and certainly the wooden bar will have a few good stories. Even still had the snug at the front. Bar benches and stools on back wall facing bar had a comfortable familiar pub feel from my own student days
L. S.
Great pub, friendly staff, prices good. Full of character
V. W.
One of our favourite traditional pubs anywhere with great, well kept real ales and the best small snug in Edinburgh!
m. m.
Has a cool snug, entered via the door on the left immediately before you go through the main door. Don't have to leave here except to go to the bathroom as it has its own access to the bar.
S. W.
A proper old school Edinburgh pub, I love the pubs which have been untouched for ages and this is definitely one of them. Very friendly staff and a great range of whisky
C. H.
What a find!!! Stunning pub!! Wood panelling/stained glass windows/friendly bar staff and a cracking selection of beers and malt whiskies. Highly recommended!!!!!
A. B.
Original 1830s Edinburgh pub. Wonderful panelling and stained glass. Good, well kept ale selection too. Right next to the Kings Theatre and loads of bus routes through Tollcross. A lovely place to meet friends or read a book.
K. K.
What an amazing find! Cool ambience.. Dark and cozy with a great selection of beers and whiskies! Will go again for sure!
A.
The beer was good. Unfortunately the kitchen was closed so after walking a long ways we had to find somewhere else to eat.
T. T.
Great traditional pub. Real ales, good food and good atmosphere. The onion rings are highly recommended!
P. Z.
Cozy bar, staff was great, good beer, whisky and wine, definitely worth a visit.
H. D.
Great atmosphere with live music and wonderful traditional bar environment.
L. K. L.
Great atmosphere, fine service, good beer and beautiful decor. The waiter was new and the drinks he made was not fantastatic, but the rest compensated :-)
L. C.
Pub located in the popular area of Tollcross. Ideal to grab a beer with a small group of friends. During the summer time it's a shame it's a bit dark, burk perfect for winter te when there's few hours of light. As a typical pub in Edinburgh they have a wide range of beers. The staff is nice. There are two rooms, one for the pub (with pub dishes) and one for the restaurant
E. W.
Very cosy wee pub the open fire was a fantastic feature,
J. R.
Really good Bloody Mary. Nice staff and good local vibe, can't wait to go back
C. B.
Love the nook at the front! Could get a few nicer beers in, although pentlands ipa usually does the trick
S. S.
Great fun would have got 5 star but has to remark in updating seating
D.
Ready for the rugby. Always atmospheric. Great beer whisky wine and food
S. F.
Great wee pub, sells crisp pints. Bit pricy for pints but where in Edinburgh isn't, for the service and atmosphere it's reasonably priced. Great selection of whisky that's well priced.
S. T.
Friendly staff. Reasonable price. Good menu
I. W.
Grate little pub family friendly and grate food a little jem recommended
G. R.
In Edinburgh for a business trip and was delighted when my mate brought me to visit this bar. Proper old world bar inside, great ambience and top notch whiskey selection
L. W.
Nice place but bit expensive £11 for 2 glasses wine and a coke
g. o.
One of the best examples of traditional city pub.
I. Z.
All sorts of people all share the same good atmosphere
C. M.
SO GUTTED we don't live across the road from Bennets anymore! When we got our little rescue dog last year this place was an absolute haven for us as we could book the snug and enjoy a pint and have our doggo with us without worrying about her (she was extremely reactive to other dogs). The staff were more than accommodating, and would try their best to get us booked in for times that suited us. They were friendly, service was quick and drinks and food reasonably priced. Will be trying to come back as much as possible when lockdown lifts, even though we're a bit further away now!
S. C.
Friendly welcoming bar staff and an interesting interior to while away an evening.
J.
A great spot with a local feel to it - reasonable and and delicious dishes. We enjoyed the beer & wine selection; there are lots of different dining and cocktail options available. Fast, friendly and professional service. Good location around the University of Edinburgh, and the King's Theatre.
M. L.
Don't enjoy yourself too much or the bar staff think you've had too much to drink and stop serving you. Otherwise it would hacmve been five stars
O. F.
Fantastic tables, brilliant place. Was quite expensive for a pint, but worth it. Beautiful inside. Would recommend to anyone
N. M.
An iconic unchanged bar, lovely gantry, good selection of beers and spirits. Always worth visiting.
N. K.
Old bar with beautiful details and a great selection of beer. I was geeking out over the William Morris wall paper in the bathroom -- hence the photo.
E. B.
Brilliant place, a homely atmosphere which is to go with the territory for a real alehouse. The Bartender who served was friendly and was able to steer me around the samples well. The food quality was exceptional for the price. Beautiful, crisp Fish and Tartare sauce prepared well. The whole thing was fantastic. There was a great community buzz. Would definitely be back.
I. N.
Proper old school pub. Cheap and tasty pub grub, great staff.
D. C.
Another Edinburgh Institution. Real ale victorian tiled walls and etched glass. Regulars and tourists. Only the smoky atmosphere is missing.
D. G.
Had a lovely lunch and drinks this afternoon. Food and hospitality was excellent. Three different cask ales on, all were really good and in great condition.
R. S.
A lovely old-fashioned local. Nothing pretentious and superb pub grub
A. R.
Had a great meal here just because I (at last) could. Excellent fish and chips etc with a very palatable pint. Deelish and reasonably priced.
r. a.
Really good drinks, the pretzel was soo tasty I would reccommend it! Perfectly salty. Just wish the seating was a little comfier
C. R.
Ok, so this is not a trendy pub but it is a rare thing in Scotland which is an overwhelmingly warm and friendly one. There is a very mixed crowd from the grizzled old dudes and the (occasionally lost) students to theatrical types and hen parties. Beer is good, varied and well kept.
G. F.
Classic pub with good selection of lagers, ales and whisky to choose from. Has bands on the weekend nights.
M. C.
Great place. Pleasant and helpful staff. Although we didn't eat there the food looked very tasty.
K. H.
Food is good, but the service is great. I don't drink whisky but other members of my family do, and the guy behind the bar was amazing with his knowledge and experience with the huge selection of very good whiskys. Brilliant evening, thanks to him, and of course my family members.
S. P.
Super friendly staff, top bar.
E. C.
Friendly bar. Staff pleasant. Good selection of whiskey and rum. There is various selection of ales, although Orkney Dark Island didn't seem to taste as good as it used to.
P. B.
Really enjoyable experience. Friendly and helpful staff.
R. M.
Great for a pint after work. They could do with fewer lemon scented bog blocks in the gents though.
P. M.
Excellent pub - convivial and friendly with a mix of ages in the clientele
H.
Got a great vegetarian meal here, and a delicious cask beer. We'll have to go back for brunch (vegetarian haggis?!) and to sample some of their 150 whiskies. The staff was just lovely, and though there's limited seating if they're very busy, the atmosphere is that of a neighborhood pub. Definitely going back, even on our short visit.
G. M.
A really quite breathtaking selection of whiskies, in a traditional setting. The pricing is remarkably reasonable, and the service prompt even when the bar was crowded. Definitely to be recommended if you hope to try a few whiskies.
S. K.
Love this pub the food is always amazing and the beer is exceptional.
C. F.
Lovely setting with a good selection of beers, guest beers and gins
j. v.
Is everyone who wrote here missing the greatness of this place?. Old Man's pub??? What about one of the greatest single malt whiskey bars on the planet! Floor to ceiling, the length of the entire bar are more singles than any man could sample in a year. In my student days, they served Belhaven, now mostly Caledonian beersl Last year, I met a guy in California who asked me if I had ever been there. An institution!
J. L.
My great great grandma Bennet opened up this bar in the 1800’s I was blessed to come on my senior trip, had a gin and tonic. She migrated to Vancouver CA, and I live in Florida. Could use me a drink after all the chaos in the world at the moment, just so neat that this pub has been standing since she opened it. Enjoy!!! And blessings from America to my Scottish family!
M. P.
No need to mention the great atmosphere and the well kept old fashioned interior. Always ask what kind if beers they have on tap, as there is something interesting every time. There is a tiny door on the left side just at the entrance, where one can snuggle privately with his friends and order through a cute tiny window, try it! Sometimes it could be quite cold so take your hat with you. People are very calm and it is never loud.
A. E.
As far as I have seen so far in my life, it is the best pub on the planet Earth.
N. D.
Definitely one of the best pubs I've been in my life...
The waiters are SO NICE ! I beg you to come in France to give lessons to Parisians and French waiters, they need it so much... Cheers !
I. B.
A really great bar. The decor is rustic, the whisky selection is varied and the staff are more than happy to advise you on what to try. Will definitely be going back.
N. E.
One of my top 10 bars anywhere in the world. Gorgeous decor, varied, interesting clientele, always end up chatting with strangers, great with a group or by yourself. Its a proper old boozer with a large dollop of class and style
J. F.
A classic Edinburgh establishment. Could do with some more IPAs to stay relevant but still worthy of your time and money
D. M.
Fantastic bar at Tollcross. Holds an amazing selection of Malt Whiskies so well worth a visit if you’re into that.
Great atmosphere in the place but it is always very busy and there isn’t that many seats available. There is a bit through the back that serves food but the best buzz is in the main pub area.
Prices are pretty average for Edinburgh. Thoroughly recommend the place.
J. H.
They take covid very seriously here, the front of the bar gives you a private booth with curtains to keep customers separate. Still and outdoor area if needed.
Beer was beaut and friendly staff
C. B.
Interesting features first pint ok second looked flat l thing the new girl needs more training on the hand pumps.
J. H.
Out for beers and lunch to celebrate pals 70th birtday. Nice ale selection. Fish and chips good pub grub and set up a fine lining for our ales.
Bit empty when there Thursday 12.30 but let us see the fine old decor. The young woman behind the bar super effocient and friendly.
Grand pub and grand company.
R. O.
Right next to the King's Theatre so ideal for pre/post show drinks. Known for thespian clientele and good selection of beer on tap.
Classic Art Deco bar and, windows and pannelling with a quirky little private table to the left as you walk in with it's own hatch to the bar.
D. B.
We purchased an itison voucher which included a sharing board and a bottle of wine. Both the deal and the service were really great. We will go out without a doubt and recommend the place to everyone.
A. M.
A great pint of Guinness and a traditional patience required .... Well worth it!
A. F.
An excellent pub with very hospitable staff and incredibly maintained antique decor. Check out the small door on the left as you go in and ask about why it exists. Excellent food and great whisky and beer selections.
P. O.
Good ales and welcoming staff.extra Covid precautions being taken once again
D. T.
Great bar with a good selection of drinks. The way some of the COVID restrictions have been implemented has really impacted the atmosphere, have seen it done better elsewhere
b. p.
Really nice old fashioned pub. Good selection of beer. Service good despite being busy but you may struggle to get a table even on a week night.
B. M.
Bennetts had not changed in decades. The bar staff may no longer wear white shirts and aprons as one previous owner stipulated. Wonth a visit for the Victorian/Edwardian decor. Good selection of real ales.
M. R.
Awesome wee pub, just the right amount of guests on a Monday for a nice atmosphere. Nice collection of Whiskys and good beers as well! Was recommended by the guide of the Scotch Whisky Experience for a reason.
J. H.
Lovely atmosphere and a very relaxed environment. Good selection of beers and spirits and friendly staff. The kind of place that encourages you to lose track of time. Strongly recommended.
G.
Great selection of beers, decent food and the decor is sublime. Wooden features, stained glass windows and a fire place. Maps of Scotland as table designs. A tad expensive but still a great place to grab a drink.
p. t.
What a great bar .Cameron makes the best Negroni ever and is more than able to make anything he is asked.Cant fault the venue.
R. C.

G. G.
Great old-fashioned pub!
a.
This is such a nice local. Good whisky list, although the staff generally didn't know it and couldn't tell what they did and didn't have. Nice staff though. Very good vibe.
R. J.
A trip to Edinburgh isn't complete without a pint of Schiehallion at Bennets Bar. Cosy setting, with a traditional wooden bar decor. Great choice of beers and whiskies. The food is also excellent. Great atmosphere to sit at the bar or at one of the wee tables decorated with maps of Edinburgh and Scotland. The gents loo has a baby change facility; bonus points.
S. M.
Very lovely bar with a nice range of beers available. Also do food but at time of posting have not yet tried it though others have and look like they enjoyed it.
B. C.
Vibrant and great atmosphere, bar staff letting you sample the whisky if you weren't quite sure of which one you actually wanted, within reason as there ate so many to choose from, well done to the staff, keep up the good work

(Translated) Everything great. Great bar. Also note the small lady room, which used to be reserved for women, while the gentlemen used the large room. There is a small selection to eat. But there are a lot of different types of beer. Incidentally, this also includes the La Petite Mort restaurant. So use the shortway right after the starters - toilet in between - straight to the restaurant. Delicious food from the kitchen on the plates, but unfortunately very clearly arranged. Then end the evening in The Bennet's Bar. Cheers.
(Original)
Alles bestens. Tolle Bar. Beachtet auch den kleinen Lady-Raum, der früher nur den Damen vorbehalten war, während die Herren den großen Saal nutzten. Es gibt eine kleine Auswahl zu Essen. Dafür mächtig viele unterschiedliche Sorten an Bier. Danach den Abend in The Bennet's Bar ausklingen lassen. Cheers.

(Translated) About 200 whiskeys and excellent advice from the staff to help you make a choice.
And for less than £ 10, you have a very nice fish and chips, with a dill tartar sauce, and fries that will console you for the bad weather that day!
In addition, the place is magnificent. So you better go check it out, I think.

(Translated) A real Scottish pub in the heart of Edinburgh. The waiter was super friendly, and recommended several whiskeys on the menu. We were quite a long time, and nobody asked us for the place or asked if we wanted more drinks, they leave you at your own pace, and that's great. We also take a table of cheeses to peck, the portions are large, they put a lot of cheese and bread.
(Original)
B. Z.
