Reviews of Cask & Barrel (Broughton Street)
J. W.
If you like cask ale this the pub for you. Always 10 on offer and I've not had a bad one yet. Unfortunately this means I can't share with you how the staff respond when you take one back.
J. R.
Found this place during an overnight stay in Edinburgh. Great for a few drinks and watched footie whilst there. Nice atmosphere.
D. L.
Friendly people and staff sky and bt sports numerous tvs to watch on,wide choice of beers and wines plus guest ales if that's your thing ,spent a good few hours in here enjoyed.
G. T.
Nice pub, friendly staff who were attentive to any questions. Will be back
B. M.
Old fashioned Edinburgh boozer. Good selection of real ales at reasonable (Edinburgh-sic) prices. Pub shows most footy/rugby/golf. Very much a local pub and it does get very busy on occasions. No music.
G. W.
Lovely pub, lovely beer, lovely staff and atmosphere
G. E.
Quick service, decent prices and a variety of punters makes this a good boozer.
H. F.
We (6 of us) had booked a table in York Place but when we arrived the venue was closed so we wandered down to the Cask and Barrel.
Although there were no tables available inside they checked and found a table outside which they quickly cleaned for us.
The staff were all very pleasant and attentive and we would definately recommend it..we will certainly be back.
F.
Nice bar, plenty of space to stand at the bar or sit at tables nearby. Friendly bar staff serving a selection of IPA's and draught lager. Dogs welcome
B. B.
Lively and friendly. Not too expensive for near city centre.
А. Б.
A lot of beers, not noisy so just a good place to have your pint with friends or on your own.
I. M.
Aye it's alright. Good for watching the football. Good beer selection
s. f.
Great atmosphere and for sports fans many screens showing sport
J. L.
First time I have been in this pub and i liked it, it's a traditional pub or old man's pub take your pick ,good selection of real ales and good staff fairly busy on a Friday afternoon if your are in the area it's worth a visit.
N. P.
Excellent assortment of ales and cheaper than a lot of pubs. Cheap and cheerful food menu. Popular for sports watching on weekends.
E. D.
One of the friendliest pubs I've ever been to. Great to visit, to get a way from all the tourists in the city centre.
M. B.
Since the re-opening of pubs, without doubt, the Cask has been head and shoulders above most other with their attention to cleanliness and sanitation. The staff are constantly cleaning everything and no sooner has a table been vacated, than the staff are over spraying and wiping everything cleaning again.
Of course, the beers are 'normally' pretty good too.
K. B.
Great venue, good selection of hand pulled ales. Very enjoyable afternoon spent watching the 🏉
b. l.
Very Packed on Football Night but a nice atmosphere and good selection of drinks!
M. M.
10 Real ale hand pumps so partner was very pleased. He had an excellent pint! Very friendly and helpful bar staff and a really nice atmosphere. Lots of TV's around but a variety of seating including booths still means you can have conversations. Would definitely recommend.
K. S.
Classic English pub with a good beer and whiskey selection. Prices are extremely reasonable and they are always showing all the games/matches. We were looking to watch soccer and cricket at the same time and they already had both on when we walked in. Food selection is a little limited.
L. M.
proper pub with horse shoe bar. hard to find. not pretentious. friendly staff who worked as a team. loved it. highly recommend.
T. M. W.
Fantastic staff! They take the time to ask your tastes and then offer you samples of beers you might like. The bartender with the beard is particularly amazing. So friendly. All around a really cozy place to have a nice beer and relax.
S. S.
Great to see The Cast open again, such an old, institution in Broughton Street. Brilliant place to go and have a chat with your mates and relax on a Saturday afternoon.
V. S.
Great staff. Booked table for family get together. Neil and staff couldn't do enough. Pity they don't do food, apart from toasties and pies, soup would be a good addition. Made feel very welcome. Nice friendly pub. Good sports pub. Thanks for taking photographs. Will be back in when back in Edinburgh for sure. Thankyou.
S. B.
Good place for real ale. Pleasant bar staff. Good atmosphere. Even if you order a half they pull some through to make sure it’s fresh. So few places do that. Good stuff!
A. M.
Great choice of real ales, always served to perfection. Too many TVs for my liking, however the sound is kept low so not really intrusive.
Can be a really great place to watch the six nations (atmosphere can be electric) but be warned the place will be stowed out. Don't worry about being served as even when busy the service is excellent.
G. E.
Good pub for inexpensive lunch, lots of real ales , traditional in the true sense of the word. Last of a dying breed. If you are looking for organic quinoa go elsewhere. If you are looking for a fine pie and an honest pint you will not be disappointed.
D. D.
How many tellys? Enough for every angle. Great for watching the rugby no matter where you stand and you may have to stand. This is a very popular pub for televised sport and the atmosphere is like being at the game. Well staffed bar, great beer, acceptable prices.
S. M.
An brilliant pub; a great selection of beers that are regularly updated and are very reasonably priced (you can get a good craft beer for, on average, about £3.50 a pint). Lots of TV screens and seating make this a great place to watch sports in a vibrant yet friendly atmosphere.
P. D. L. N.
Good choice of ales, beers and whiskies. Usually good service behind the bar. The place to be for sporting events (Champion League games, English and Scottish Premier leagues, 6 Nations Rugby, etc) as they have 5 or 6 very big HD plasma screens. Very busy during weekends, football and rugby games.
P. M.
Staff fantastic very efficient always a friendly greeting drinks so reasonable when I'm in Broughton always make a point in going in
G. E.
Great place Mathew would love it.
D. M.
Good traditional Scottish pub. Great atmosphere, good range of beers and several screens to watch sport. Better toilet facilities and some food options are what's missing!
N. A.
Great pub with good selection of beer. Barman on duty this afternoon, 6th December 2018, was excellent. He remembers your round etc. Slick service. Slightly away from the centre but well worth a visit.
N. S.
Great bar with quality, well kept, beers & Ales. Brilliant staff & a fantastic place to watch live sport. Only slight drawback is they don't serve meals but aside from that it's a brilliant pub.
J. M.
Hidden gem on Brought on street. One of a few places to still use horizontal stillage, the cask ales are excellently looked after and forever changing - there is always something new! The range of whiskies and rums is equally impressive, though the gin selection is lacking. The price point at the pub caters to the old regulars crowd - dirt cheap!
M. A.
Spent 2 months in Edinburgh (visiting from the U.S.) and was pretty much here every Wednesday. Good selection, nice crowd (usually someone reading the paper). I wish I had known they serve, half pints, haha. They won't let you have a crappy beer here.
L. C.
There's very few proper old pubs left. Reasonably priced, great selection of drinks and good for the football. Doesn't do food but not every pub should be expected to now!
M. J.
A great pub, good atmosphere and handy if you like sports! Large selection of beers and lagers with the plus side (for me anyway...) of not serving food. The last decent pub on Broughton Street.
s.
Good range of real ales.
T. O.
Very nice old fashioned pub. Staff are very friendly and helpful in service and very chatted. Plenty of screens around the place if you want to see the footie.
Price for a drink is reasonable.
S. J. (.
Nice atmosphere, brilliant cheery bar staff. Went in feeling bad after long wait and walk in cold, and barman instantly cheered me up with service banter! Great space for opening birthday presents etc.
R. U.
Wonderful selection of beers served by knowledgable staff. Topped off with a nice space to drink outside on the rare sunny day in Edinburgh. I'll be back
K. R.
If you want a good pint, you won't be disappointed. Several real ales on top condition in a traditional Scottish pub.
D. P.
Good selection of beers. Always a friendly atmosphere. Some of the old TVs could be replaced as picture quality poor.
K. L.
Solid and popular traditional bar. Good range of ales. A good venue for watching live sport, although it gets crowded for big football and rugby games.
J. P.
Really nice beer and was made to feel welcome
A. W. (.
One of my favourite spots for a pint when in Edinburgh. More locals than tourists
p. w.
Traditional pub, just what's needed
D. C.
Lovely clean, friendly pub with interesting selection of ales. Very delighted to find draft Bass available. A regular visitor every time I'm in Edinburgh
C. S.
Best choice of real ale properly served and reasonably priced. Good food at good price served at lunch time. Good football/rugby coverage with T. V.'s well situated for easy viewing. Excellent management. A must visit.
A. d. Z.
Good selection of beers and usually a good crowd. More local pub than posh drinking. Also shows a lot of football matches with several televisions throughout the bar.
N. W.
This is a good old fashioned pub, serves a variety of beers, including a changing selection of real ales and a good variety of snacks. Football and rugby are shown, but it is generally not too intrusive.
D. F. P.
Spacious and well presented pub in the Broughton area. Must visit!
D. S.
This was our first pub on our first night in Edinburgh. Took the direct train up from King's Cross London which made for a long day. I had a really good Scottish stout Chew Chew from Fallen Brewing Co. Hit the spot after a long day. Found out they didn't have food so we finished up and walked across the road to The Ox to eat.
S. v. (.
Great ol'timey atmosphere in here. Constant supply of typical scottish lagers, salted nuts and quality banter. Because of the atmosphere and the fact it's at the bottom of the hill, the prices are ever so slightly cheaper than other places nearby which makes it a great place to stop off when heading into/back from town.
J. B.
Great pub. Lovely staff. Will be back for sure
C. F.
Always friendly and cheery, good selection of beers and ales. My only qualm would be there's not enough proper cider, but that's just because I'm picky.
S. W.
I don't drink so don't ask what the beer was like. Nice place to meet for pre dinner drink with friends. 4 tv's if you want to watch sport.
m. l. d.
Friendly with simple menu. Lots of TVs.
s. T.
Friendly bar staff. Great atmosphere good choice of beers. Convenient centre Location. On the number 8 bus route. 😜
N. D.
Awesome place to grab a pint. Would be five stars if they allowed food since they don't serve it but they still won't let you bring anything in. Regardless, if you want a pint this is a good place to go.
K. H.
