Reviews of Never Really Here
E. G.
Place is quirky but the tables are super sticky I don’t think they have been cleaned in ages, service is really good and the cocktails are great, the menu is quite unique I have to say too sweet for my palate but an overall great experience
B. J.
A great speakeasy bar in Edinburgh, making cocktails the “old fashioned” way with no perishable items and trying to be sustainable as possible. Great cocktails, even off the cuff drinks made to your specific tastes by a fantastic, knowledgable bar tender. To bad this is our last night in the city, otherwise we would be back tomorrow 100%. Don’t forget to knock!
G. R.
One of Edinburgh's best and unique, quirky, cocktail bars!
First time going and it was a refreshing change.
The cocktails are of the highest quality and the staff are outstanding.
If you want something truly unique, give the staff your flavour profiles and they will make you something amazing.
N. P.
Fantastic bar, great cocktails. The bartenders really know what they're doing. They made a great atmosphere and great drinks and it was a great way to spend the evening! Highly recommended and I'll definitely be there every time I'm in Edinburgh!
D. C.
An amazing cocktail bar and highly recommended. Cocktails are amazing and the atmosphere is perfect. Staff are amazing and have a good knowledge of the cocktails, one even knew what my wife was going to select before she ordered (spooky).
It's not the easiest to fit as there is no signs outside just a black door which you need to knock before you get in which I think adds to the experience.
Its cash only or bank transfer.
J. H.
I have a pretty damn picky taste bud for cocktails. This spot is awesome. Smooth and perfect blend. Btw, I had about 4 in 1 sitting!
E. C.
amazing drinks! speakeasy with a punk edge i wish more NYC bars had. it’s like stepping into an eastern european dive bar with limited ingredient availability for drinks; nevertheless delicious! no mixers, booze on booze!! cheers!
E. R.
Great speakeasy cocktail bar: top staff, drinks, music, vibe and decor. Perfect if you want to have a bit of a unique and intimate experience when out in Edinburgh.
D. P.
What a find! For chilled vibes and stunning cocktails book a table here. The staff are brilliant, so friendly and knowledgeable. We had drinks from the menu and off menu based on our drink preferences, both were exceptional. The night after our booking we were walking past and decided to knock on on the off chance they had a table... where most would say no, they gave us a table for 1 drink in between bookings and it was just as wonderful as our first visit. Highly recommend!
B. L.
**PLEASE NOTE** This review was left for the PREVIOUS Cocktail bar in this location & NOT ‘Bullard & Worth’ as I have not been here since it changed from the ‘Detective’!
Great concept, took some finding, (google maps not accurate for some reason) but cool, small cosy quiet bar with some cool, blues brothers/funk/soul music playing, under the guise of a secretive detective agents office, even details down to the bars name in the ice cubes.
Dropped a star as size of cocktails on the menu is always helpful, but sadly missing from this menu. But would definitely recommend a visit when in Edinburgh
K.
Such a cool and unique experience and amazing cocktails, made exactly as you want ! The staff were v friendly and helpful too. A must visit!
J. I. (.
If you pick up the best bar in Edinburgh, here and SMWS.
Here's a nice, gentle bartender and a place where you can concentrate on your drinks without making any noise.
R. E.
Had a blast!! What an unique experience! Keep up the good stuff! Cocktail menu is on a league of their own! They also made me an off the menu cocktail that was spot on! Asked for a Side Car, they made their version with what they had, PHENOMENAL! Thanks again guys, will visit soon again for sure!
C. L.
Great little bar with excellent service but beware all cocktails are £10 each… Saying that I would still have called just for the atmosphere but probably wouldn’t have had 3 each 🤦♀️🤣.. no card machine so cash or bank transfers only.
G. O.
Really really wanted to get a table here and try the place.
Was very nice, however wow the drinks were strong. Blew my head off.
Very nice staff very nice place
R. o. R. F.
Small hidden bar, different cocktails to anywhere else in been, no fancy shaking or ingredients, the 2 guys were pleasant enough. The whole.place is covered in graffiti which can make interesting reading.
J. A.
Despite the name change, this hidden little speakeasy has only changed for the better and is more focused on the fantastic cocktail creations. The place has tons of character and a cozy atmosphere, and very knowledgeable and friendly staff to assist you with your drink choices. A true gem in an area of indifferent touristy pubs.
M. A.
Brilliant little speakeasy. Simon behind the bar was brilliant. All of the drinks I tried were amazing. I will definitely seek this place out the next time I’m in Edinburgh.
Don’t let the locked door fool you, knock and behold the treasures within.
C. N.
What an absolutely fantastic place! We booked a table on a Saturday evening. We were welcomed by a very animated and friendly guy who sat us down, got us some water, and explained the menu. They do not shake drinks here, they only stir them. The small place requires only one bartender - a quirky gentleman with a moustache, beret and braces who would not be out of place in a Wes Anderson film. He crafted some amazing drinks for us and the guy that greeted us brought us a bunch of permanent markers, encouraging us to add to the existing graffiti present everywhere in the bar; on tables, chairs, casks, walls...
And we had a blast!
We will be returning here as often as possible to enjoy this completely unique atmosphere and its amazing, handcrafted drinks.
Bananas!
J. Z.
Interesting cocktails served by knowledgeable and passionate cocksperts. I loved the hidden aspect of the place. I'd probably never find it again, having been taken here by a local. But next time I'm in Edinburgh, I'll be looking for it
H. D. K.
The hidden gem of Edinburgh's new town!! Great vibe inspired by prohibition era. Amazing cocktails. It's a bit small though and can get a bit crowded, but still one of the few places in Edinburgh where you can enjoy a quality cocktail. Well done for keeping this place a common secret!! So cool!!! Congratulations!!! Just look at the door! Coolest thing ever!!!
H. C.
Would recommend to anyone and everyone. Absolutely amazing staff and drinks
S. M.
Best cocktail bar in Edinburgh , probably entire Scotland!
The owner works behind the bar himself, the drinks are spectacular, and the atmosphere is intimately cozy. Will return! Just remember to Knock the lions head to be let in!
D. S.
Nice bar, nice atmosphere, no sign outside, bit expensive for the size of drink. Recommend booking on line.
S. B.
This is probably the best cocktail bar in town. Jordon made us feel so welcome as we arrived and chatted to us throughout our wee visit! The cocktail list is super unique which makes it stand out compared to the other bars - and they are also delicious! A proper cosy little place for a nightcap and just to chill out. If you are out in town this place is a must!!! 5 stars!!!
K. W.
Amazing! Great, unusual cocktails + friendly helpful staff
M. R.
This is a review about Bullard and Worth: This is probably one of the best bars in Edinburgh (in terms of drinks). Unlike other bars, its hidden yet central location give it a more personal feel.
The bar is OK for small groups (4-5 people) but I would recommend going with fewer as space is limited. Also, be ready to knock on the door. My friends and I were confused when we arrived as it seemed closed. But once we knocked, we were greeted by a very friendly bartender!
The cocktails themselves are amazing. Whilst a bit on the higher end of the price spectrum, they are definitely worth their value. Be free to ask any questions of the bartenders as they have quite inspiring and innovative stories about the art of their profession.
All in all, I absolutely loved the experience and definitely recommend bringing short-term visitors!
S. M.
For Bullard & Worth, still good but not as good. Classic cocktail menu not evident and small details missed that previous owners would have picked up. Nonetheless this is an experience and the atmosphere is still great.
For Bryant & Mack. Love this place. For me the best small bar in Edinburgh. Not really for groups more for small huddles to enjoy high end cocktails and atmosphere. Great bar staff who love their art. Well done guys! Very good...
D. W.
Great little speakeasy, knock and you will discover some great drinks.
H. K.
Cool, well hidden speakeasy with a large menu. Cocktails are very... creative. Had two or three drinks here and can't say I really enjoyed any of their custom creations, but it was definitely an experience!
I. C.
With an inconspicuous entranceway signalled via the warm glow of a lantern that sits above its simplistic wooden doors, the experience starts with finding and entering this incredible cocktail den. A unique place with an amazing atmosphere and incredible selection of cocktails I would go as far to say that this is very likely one of the best bars in Edinburgh. I was impressed by the knowledgeable staff who helped me select the best components for my favourite drink, the old fashioned. I took the recommended rye bourbon and it resulted in the best version of this classic that I think I've tasted. The use of a single large ice cube in the drink that didn't melt away in thirty seconds like in so many places was a touch that left me feeling that this business cares about its customers. Overall a classy establishment .
P. W.
What an amazing little cocktail bar! It has a very welcoming atmosphere and instantly sells you the really cool private detective theme. The place offers a very nice selection of artisanal cocktails in a very unique setting. There's just a right amount of quirkiness - the place has a detective theme, but it never feels overwhelming. The staff were very friendly and helpful, offering a detailed explanation of drinks and were happy to offer us alternatives.
C. S.
Great find while traveling through Edinburgh. Very friendly staff; we wandered in without a reservation but they managed to find us a table later and gave us a great nearby recommendation for a drink in the meantime. As a cocktail geek I found they had some very interesting and tasty combinations. Fun atmosphere to boot. Highly recommend.
C. H.
Drinks were great. If you like whisky try their old fashioned cocktail, it is really lovely.
Cocktails prices around 8-9£ each.
Knock at least twice there is only one bartender who does everything!
B. E.
We desired a cocktail before dinner elsewhere so popped into this establishment, after knocking on the very large door (look for the shiny brass door knocker). Fabio welcomed us and also concocted a couple of drinks for us, one gin based and one vodka based. They were served in pretty glasses and tasted very good. Can highly recommend and will definitely return.
R. J.
Great atmosphere, very knowledgeable staff and a great selection of whiskies and cocktails. Definitely visit when you're in Edinburgh.
E. R.
While still nice, it is as though this place has become part of a chain. Less speakeasy cocktails and more standard drinks and beer.
M. M.
Had some lovely cocktails here on the first night of our Edinburgh trip.
They let us book a table for the two of us which was great.
A really cool, quirky, speakeasy style place.
Beware, the cocktails are strong!
b.
This place is awesome! The guys were friendly and happy to suggest a cocktail if your not sure.
Nice interior and decor and the themed menus are awesome.
It's just enough out the way to feel like you "found it" but near enough that your not wandering round some back street somewhere.
W.
Our absolutely favorite bar in Edinburgh!!
Really friendly guys and a warm welcome, good conversations about music and other stuff at the bar and all in all the damn best cocktails in town!!
We‘ve taken „Caledonia“ with us home, in our hearts, same as we did with our memories of you and your bar!
Hope to see you again soon!
D. B.
This is a strictly table service bar which hosts a unique drinking experience, great to share with loved ones or friends.
I was recommended to pay this establishment a visit whilst I was in edinburgh for a few days. What a lovely little place this is, tucked away in a corner of rose street, without the assistance of Google Maps I would have found it very difficult to locate as even from the outside it's very low key and subtle (we did walk straight past it initially).
Greeted by friendly staff upon entry we were sat down at a table for 2 near the front of the bar, and handed a menu each which came in a 'confidential' envelope which was a nice touch. Whilst browsing the menu it also gave us chance to have a look around the place which contains all sorts of different curios and an appealing decor to add to the private investigator theme.
Drinks were very nice, unique and quirky. Table service was fantastic and the staff would frequently top up table water which definitely helped me keep hydrated throughout the night.
Would highly recommend to visit this place if you want something a little different and you want to stray away from the usual packed bars and noisy crowds of a typical night out.
F. B.
Looks unassuming from the outside and the inside is cosy, seating room only (as far as I could tell) with very attentive staff. Cocktails are on the pricey side but they're amazing and the music means you can still sit and talk to whoever you're with. Would definitely come again.
A. J.
If consuming vast amounts of hops based beverages, dressed in your best sportswear is you thing, then this isn't the place for you. If however, you enjoy expertly constructed cocktails by a man who visibly takes pleasure in his craft then this might indeed quickly become one of your favourite haunts in Edinburgh.
A fantastic and engaging experience from start to finish.
R. D.
Lovely small bar. Not as pretentious as feared with phenomenal cocktails.
They were in the middle of changing menus when we were there meaning some misleading menu items but staff were very accommodating with substitutes still highly enjoyable
M. J.
What a find! A hidden gem. Amazing cocktails. Fabio was most attentive and makes the best cocktails i have ever tasted. Will be a stable on our visits to Edinburgh!!
g. i.
Cosy, quirky, hidden gem! Great cocktails, great laugh!
Not to be missed whilst your visiting Edinburgh.
10/10 service from Fabio and Sam. The boys made us feel welcome and was willing to mix us up a cockatil not on the menu.
Loved the vibe in there, great music, great atmosphere. Was busy the whole night and loved the concept!
Looking forward to my next trip up from London to return and will recommend to all friends!
It’s a must to go... but make sure you book!!!
Lots of love,
Gemma x

My partner and I were browsing online of interesting places to go in Edinburgh and we came across this little gem. From the outside, you cannot tell whatsoever that this place is a bar! It actually does look like the sort of place that a private detective would have an office, centrally located but inconspicuously tucked away off the main street. The inside is very small, could probably fit about 20 people or so maximum. I suppose if nobody knows about it then it won't really be packed in there. I went during the week and there was only a few people in there. The staff are dressed smartly and kind of old fashioned, which adds to the whole private detective ambience. They give you the drinks menu which come in a folder labelled 'confidential', which I thought was a great touch. Unfortunately there are a couple things that I did not like which made me only give 3 stars. The first thing was the price of the drinks. It's about 9 pounds for any cocktail which is crazy. Also about 5 pounds for a beer. That is quite expensive. The other thing was that other than the secret location/appearance, staff outfits, and menu presentation, there wasn't anything else that fit the private detective theme! With that sort of novelty place, you could do all sorts of cool things. You could have a secret password at the door. You could have various puzzles or riddles that if someone solved one they got a free drink or a discount or something. You could have all kinds of theme nights as well! So I was disappointed that they haven't reached their full potential of theme. Other than that, if you don't mind the high prices, well worth a visit!
P. K.
What a hidden gem. Great cocktails, not crowded and good quality of service.
Excellent for a romantic cocktail or just a drink with mates.
No signage for this place so not crowded.
Love it.
C. S.
Top notch cocktails with a proper speakeasy vibe. The staff are very friendly and their drinks knowledge is excellent. The cocktail menu is well crafted and their classics are fantastic.
D. B. R.
Brilliant speakeasy. Great service by owner, superb cocktails! Many happy returns hopefully
A. H.
Bryant and [redacted] is a cocktail bar so secretive that they don't even use that name on the Google Review and instead go by the pseudonym Bullard & Worth.
The entrance to this cozy place can be found on [redacted] and although it looks unassuming on the outside push through the door and you'll find a [redacted] of [redacted] that was once used to [redacted] the Maltese [redacted].
Friendly staff clearly take a pride in their cocktails and don't just dress up in waistcoats and waxed facial hair like a bunch of [redacted][redacted] goose fondling [redacted] [redacted] [redacted] balls.
If you want a relaxed and intimate atmosphere, an excellent drink and a good place to discretely purchase intelligence on the activities of [redacted], I would strongly recommend this place.
S. L.
Loved it! Mighels service was outstanding 👌🏻
K. J.
Unique experience. Good personal service and lovely cocktails.
j. w.
First time back since it changed from the vodka bar and we'll can't praise enough cocktails 👏👏 atmosphere 👏👏 engaging and knowledgeable staff willing to give suggestions off menu if required. Well done 👍
S. H.
A wonderful hidden gem. This reminds me of the sort of bars you come across in Berlin. Lovely cocktails and the bar staff are happy to make you a cocktail if you give them an idea of what you like.
B. L.
New owners, same excellent cocktails, if you can find the place. Tiny little bar well worth getting away from the bustle of Princes street and Rose street for well mixed Old Fashioned
J. P.
Absolute belter of a wee cocktail bar, hidden down a lane in the heart of town. Stellar drinks list - the toasted daiquiri and the Date in Manhattan were both absolutely on point the last time I was in, but the menu's always got a great mix of classics and some really inventive stuff on there too.
C. J.
Jason, Alex, Shannon and Fabio are great people. Everything that follows is just as great.
P. B.
Loved it. Genuinely excellent cocktails, very welcoming and nice and cosy. We spent an awesome time chatting and relaxing here. Love the speakeasy theme
S. A.
Cocktails were amazing, loved the ambience of the bar and the staff were incredible with their recommendations. Would highly recommend and will definitely visit again when I'm back in the city.
A.
I mean, yes it's a nice bar with cool decor and a cosy feel. But paint me red and call me a lobster: £8-9 per cocktail seems a bit pricey for me.
A. P.
Well deserving of its reputation, the staff is very professional & the drinks are as well, great drinks , great atmosphere, no pretentiousness, intimate & personal. Probably one of my favorite bars in the UK
J. E.
Great atmosphere and even greater drinks. The bartender was incredibly friendly and gave us some fantastic suggestions on what to do during our trip.
A. C.
Finally a bar you can have a chat without shouting. A great selection of drinks from educated bar staff. Always busy at weekend so get down early.
M. W.
Very quirky and well hidden. Would not have found it without a recommendation but very glad we did. Good all round cocktails
S. K.
Nice place, small and fun! Drinks were strong!! But used actual alcohol and not cheap / manufactured stuff. Would like a bigger menu but really good
N. H.
Nice cosy cocktail bar, service can be very slow. Menu is limited.
C. L.
Not a single criticism. The atmosphere and music were spot on and the drinks were absolutely wild. Get Jenny's Affection while you can ;)
K. H.
