Reviews of The Black Cat
K. M.
Stopped by for a weekday lunch and really enjoyed everything about it. Chill vibes, outdoor seating, friendly helpful service, local beer offerings, plenty of whiskey (not just scotch! They had a few bourbons too), food was tasty. They had vegetarian options, and the chips were delicious. Perfect spot for a good beer and simple food sitting outside on a nice day.
M. D.
Popped in for haggis, really wanted to try this Scottish dish. It's right in the centre of Edinburgh, so you shouldn't be thinking of parking. The staff were ace, especially the guy, he recommended the blue cheese and the barbecue sauces for the haggis balls. The food was amazing, they were a little late with the drinks and before I could say it was okay, they knocked them off the bill and gave them free of charge! Really nice people and food, if in Edinburgh, then visit this place 👌

FANTASTIC SCOTTISH PUB for WHISKEY!! We stumbled upon The Black Cat when looking for a traditional Scottish pub for a PROPER WHISKEY. I'm not an expert and my girlfriend had never tried whiskey before so we asked Robyn who served us for the evening to help us decide. Robyn was so helpful and really knew a lot about the whiskies they had to offer. Robyn presented us with two delicious wee drams based on what kind of drinks we usually like and they were DELICIOUS! So delicious we kept having more. Very well priced too for the experience. Definitely would recommend going on Wednesday when they have live traditional Scottish music, they also have a quiz on Tuesday's which we would have loved to have done.
E. S.
Had a great whisky flight! My boyfriend and I both had one but we have pretty different taste in whisky and the bar tender helped choose 2 different flights to our liking in our price range. He was very knowledgeable and told us some great info about the whiskys we were drinking. Really enjoyable experience. Great chips too 😋
Y. B.
Excellent place to support the locals! I'd been looking for a pub with craft beer taps, and I'm glad I found this one because most pubs with local craft beer close early on Monday!
M. R.
I just love this place. The staff are so friendly and so prepared for any questions or suggestions..
This is a must placevto stopp by!
G.
A few local ales, lots of choice whiskys, good atmosphere in a small bar.

My friend and I came when it was quite busy. We sat on a large table and were very kindly asked if we could move to accommodate a large group. More than happy to oblige as the staff had been really nice. Even though we didn't ask they compensated us with some free snacks, cannot fault the service. Been here a few times now the service has always been good.
J. M. B.
Went mid-afternoon when it wasn't too busy. I asked for help choosing a whiskey flight for a moderate price point and was greeted with enthusiastic response while staff helped pick a customized experience for me based on my preferences. The barman explained elementary and more in-depth information about each whiskey including geographical considerations for each distillery, casks, green/ecological initiatives for each, management styles for businesses, and typical nose and palate profiles. An extremely kind and educational whiskey experience. Would strongly recommend for those looking for a guided expansion to the palate, tourists, or dates.

Visited here twice with my partner over Valentines weekend and both times were absolutely brilliant. Massive whisky selection and Laura and Lauren behind the bar were the best craic! One of the nights had a trad band in the corner which meant for an incredible energetic atmosphere and the night without had the pub feeling so chill and cozy. Everyone who visits Edinburgh should pop in for a pint at LEAST once ❤️
S. B.
Hands down one of my favourite pubs in Edinburgh and I regularly drink here. The whisky selection is next level and the staff are super knowledge and helpful. Trad tunes on various nights as well from some great musicians.
S. R.
What a cute pub we stumbled on - lovely staff and great ambiance in there. The mulled wine and hot toddy hit the spot.
P. S.
Nice pub with a great choice of whisky. Live music on the weekend til 7pm
S. H.
Great atmosphere and knowledge of Whisky. 110% recommend
C. C.
Great selection of beers as well as whiskies. Friendly atmosphere, called in for a drink, ending up staying all evening!
I. W.
Lovely little pub with some good guest ales and probably the best special I've ever seen, half & half of the month, superb, right up my street.
L. C.
Fantastic food and friendly customer service. Exceeded expectations! Would not go back to Edinburgh without popping in for some scrumptious food and the great atmosphere

The Purrfect bar for the whisky enthusiast
I visited The Black Cat due to a recommendation and it did not disappoint. Upon entering we were meet with an intimate and perfectly lit atmosphere, which had whisky paraphernalia in abundance. This was coupled with a warm welcome from Robbie, the brilliant whisky enthusiast bartender.
There is an impressive array of over 200 whiskys on offer, all ranging in price. They offered tailored flights of whisky, which was catered to your tastes and budget. I opted for £25 and I have to say that the 3 whiskys they poured were spot on for me, each one an excellent dram. Beautifully presented and passionately described, it is a proper whisky bar experience.
To add to an already worthwhile visit, they had a live band to add to the ambiance and overall enjoyment, which I was told is an every night occurrence.
Overall, I couldn't recommend The Black Cat, Robbie and the team highly enough, and I certainly will be back again to sample more whisky and dive back into the tremendous hospitality.
D. M.
Nice beers, impressive selection of whisky.
R. H.
Nice old fashioned looking pub. A bit basic but really friendly staff and tasty food.
J. B.
This is one of my favorite pubs in all of Scotland. Non-pretentious although they would have the right to be. Always great beers and ales. Incredible knowledge of their whisky. The friendliest service in town. I always make sure I stop in here whenever I'm in Edinburgh. Catch the live music of you have the opportunity. It's like sitting in a Scottish living room listening to traditional songs.
D. C.
We arrived here to wean a £20 down to a fiver. We found so much more. We were greeted by Alex, the transplant from the far, far away frontier of Canada (comfortably spaced from Quebec) and Laura, whose knowledge of whiskey is as deep as the darkness of her locks. All in all a great time! I learned a bit about whiskey, which was nice. I love this city and will definitely make an excuse to return at some point in the future. Thank you black cat for the perfect pub atmosphere and thank you for ending our Edinburgh experience on a high note.
l. o.
Great place all around. Great, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Excellent live music a couple of days a week.
C. F.
Only sat outside, didn't order my drink either, so regardless of the fact that I haven't stepped in the place, I enjoyed sitting in the sun. Smoking permitted outside, ashtrays provided. Clean glasses would go again.
A. B.
Live music, well looked after pints. Probably the best "pub" in and around the princes street area. Go for pints not food as very limited options
A. H.
Small but friendly pub, worth a visit and if you don't like it there are many more around, but I did like it so stayed for a couple
A. H.
Brilliant cozy little pub on the popular restaurant strip.
Excellent menu at excellent prices including some good British meals. A good range of drinks, even including hot alcoholic beverages.
Pet friendly too!
R. W.
Great little bar. Reasonably priced, good selection on the bar and a fantastic range of whiskey. Staff are really personable and the whole thing just has a really jovial atmosphere.
B. H.
Good selection of whisky.
D. M.
Fantastic experiences! Monday and Wednesday they had musicians playing, peach sour melba beer was great!
G. G.
We went there after our tour guide recommended us this place for some Whisky tasting. They have a great selection of whiskies and the stuff was very knowledgeable and kind.
We took two 15 💷 flights (there are different kinds of prices). We really enjoyed the experience.
Strongly recommend!.
J. L.
Chanced upon this place while strolling down the street. I’d say this cosy place is more for drinks. Great beers, but food was average. Absolutely approachable and friendly staff.
J.
Ok pub on the main road with loads all of the pubs, nice staff, ok selection of beer, and you even get live music on certain nights.
R. M.
Fantastic bar in the heart of Rise street. Great day. Weather was amazing. The staff were fantastic and couldn't be more helpfully.
D. H.
Stumbled upon this gem. The bartenders were incredibly knowledgeable about the local beers and whisky. I did a whisky tasting and selected the "Staff Picks" option, I'd say it's the best option for your money.
F. W. (.
It's a great place for whisky. The bar staff have a lot of experience and skill in getting people's tastes right. There are some set flights but I found that it's good to ask for something ad hoc based on your preferences.
Not great for big groups that already are kinda drunk.
P. H.
Hopefully a one off but didn't have anything I drank. Staff member was very friendly. Rustic place
L. A.
Great for meeting friends. Not too noisy. Quaint
E. B.
Whisky tasters for beginners. Great idea for my welsh partner who's just recently got a taste for Scottish whisky. Great atmosphere, we loved it here
K.
Over 400 whiskies on offer, leith juice on tap what's there not to like.
n.
Fabulous wee place good prices. Great fiddlers and good craic.
L. M.
We arrived in Edinburgh and had a bit of a wait before our AirBnB was ready so we popped in The Black Cat. It has several different seating arrangements that made the bar cozy. We had a bit of food and it was good. Great beer too. The bartenders we're friendly and chatty. There was a large table where we could hide our bags and do some work. It was perfect.
M. S.
Staff managed to squeeze us in on a busy Friday night which was very helpful. Really classic pub in the busy city centre, which you only realise if you go inside! Staff were friendly and the price for the wine of the week was incredibly reasonable. There was a good selection of beers and ales and it was a comfy/ enjoyable place to get a good drink with great music!
J. S.
The staff were absolutely lovely and knew exactly what was on tap and could tell you all about guest ales they had in that day. Music was great and the atmosphere was really chill. Ale's pulled the perfection, highly recommend.
M. R.
Great little pub. Had a great time with a local here. Just dropped in for a beer and they had a couple of guys playing. The prices were reasonable. It’s small but we found room at the bar. Only critique is that I asked for a Black and Tan and they did not know what it was. What? Oh well.
C. C.
The staff were great! Unfortunately, we arrived just as their kitchen closed, however the bartender suggested an area nearby that had a few restaurants for us to choose. After dinner, we came back for a flight of whiskies.
J. P.
Great place with very friendly and helpful staff. It's really cosy and both the food and drinks are tasty and in reasonable prices. It's our second visit here and we'll definitely be back. Thank you!
A. A.
Lovely wee bar, great atmosphere, good craic, live music was good and a superb selection of whisky
B. C.
Small pub great atmosphere. Plenty beers and whisky
T. M.
Very cozy vibe and freindly staff. Small pub with a big heart ♥️
M. L.
Superb real ale pub.. Super friendly, polite, efficient staff. Made to feel very welcome.. Open until late.. While other pubs in area are already closed.. Highly recommended.
C. M.
Great ambience, cozy, friendly staff.
D. B.
A gem in the heart of the best city to live in :) Friendly staff, great selection of whiskeys, beer on tap. Very recommended!
P. S.
Lovely whisky bar that has live Scottish music a few times a week. And an awesome quiz every Tuesday. Be sure to book up though as it fills up fast.
A. H.
Nice being able to sit outside on Rose St. Food was nice just a bit tight for space.
S. J.
Nice cosy pub, great beer selection
D. M.
Nice cosy independent bar with great collection of whisky and beer
M. G.
Spent a few hours here this evening. Two ladies (Irish and American) took great care of my friend and I.
Will come back
N. k. s.
Love this bar,! Great selection of whisky and the two young ladies behind the bar are excellent.
R. T.
Nice friendly pub in the centre of town. Doing as well as you could expect given current covid restrictions. Not corporate or shiny/polished, but has that comfortable drinkers pub feel that is sadly lacking most places these days.
R. W.
Great and knowledgeable staff. Awesome whisky selection. Chilled vibes
H. H.
The Black Cat is a really nice wee pub in a lovely setting. It's always lively on a Friday/Saturday but not rowdy from my experience. A really good place to meet with friends or go for a quiet pint by yourself in the daytime. It's a little pricey, but no more so than anywhere else on Rose Street and the staff are really nice and chilled out so it's well worth it. Nice atmosphere.
P.
Really great bar with a huge selection of Scotch and very knowledgeablebar staff if you need some advice, though other drinks are available. The atmosphere inside is lovely really relaxed and has a bit of a magical feel! Food is also available and although there isn't much selection it's perfect for a quick bite. Would definitely go back anytime I'm in Edinburgh!
D. T.
Nice pub with a good range of drinks.
M. O.
This place is absolutely incredible. Perfect ambience created by hanging branches intertwined with dairy lights, wine barrels, and cozy seating. Bartenders are very welcoming, food portions are generous and delicious. The folk music is an absolute must see and was the highlight of our stay in Edinburgh. We went there twice in our trip and would happily go back again. Cannot recommend enough!!!
B.
Amazing whisky selection, friendly and knowledgable staff and a great live band!
S.
Loved it! Super friendly tiny authentic bar with exclusive whiskies
T. S.
Great little pub with a vast selection of whiskies. The people that work there are awesome and are knowledgeable about the different variety of whiskies. Prices are reasonable as well. Don't hesitate to walk or stumble in for a dram! Although, they won't serve you if you are visibly drunk which is a good thing to everyone.
r.
Small pub, nice atmosphere. Not a massive selection of beers on tap but there is some I’ve never heard of, a few local ones. Over £11 for 2 pints so not the cheapest! Helpful bar staff, made some suggestions and handed out tasters first. Loads of whiskies if you like them.
S. H.
Excellent drinks and whisky selection.
W. J.
Favorite pub we found during our week in Edinburgh. Friendly staff, great whiskies, delightful atmosphere.
Ζ. Ρ.
Many labels of whiskey and other drinks, less beers and very little food ....
N. B. P. l. (.
Live music the night we were there . Nice atmosphere . The pucture is Rose street just outside the pub
E. S.
Great pub and always great friendly service got to be my favourite in Edinburgh so far.
P. N.
Nice and cozy with a decent tap selection.
K. H.
Nice pub with good whisky and beer selection. Cozy inside and tables outside.
M. M.
Nice friendly pub, just stopped here briefly for a quick drink and we were able to sit outside. Staff were very efficient.
M. R.
Did a great job with custom whiskey flights. Tried some new and interesting things and came back again a couple days later with some more friends.
E. C.
Best bartenders! They know their whisky!!great place to get a few drams. Don't expect great food. They just throw stuff in a fryer. But it's good for what it is. I had 6 tasting for a reasonable price!
D. W.
My favourite pub on Rose Street. Great range of draft beers and a cracking whisky selection. Staff are always friendly and attentive, very glad to be able to visit again after the lockdown.
C. A.
Small Rose Street bar with friendly staff. Occasional music
k. b.
Small space but good atmosphere. The bartender took the time to recommend and discuss different options for the whiskey sampler, super helpful! Also good value, since you get to try 3 whiskeys that might cost more purchased individually. I would definitely go back.
J. K.
Great wee pub very friendly knowledgeable staff.
P. C.
Amazing wee place worth to visit when in Edinburgh. There is a great selection of whiskies and live music, obviously when it's not shout cos of Covid restrictions.
T. H.
Great local bar really nice and helpful staff been there many times would well recommend a visit
B. C.
Come for the beer stay for the banter. Staff were great and helpful. Music / entertainment was a great touch. ... whisky... what a range. They also had the knowledge to go with the frat selection.
A. C.
We really enjoyed the atmosphere of the black cat. We had a bottle of wine and sat outside as well as 3 meals. Meals were not expensive and value for money. A good range of alcohol & particularly whiskey if you’re interested.
M. B.
They have a large selection of scotch and knowledgeable about them.
J. H.
There was a slight muck up with booking but the staff could not have been nicer, almost as excited to be back as we were. Also guest ale was delicious - come, try, enjoy!
T. J.
Friendly funn bar had a few new-year eve drinks
A. F.
Awesome staff. Good beer. Hilarious atmosphere. A*
T. H.
Fantastic service. Two wonderful bartenders on Friday, 6th March. Extremely warm, friendly & gave us great recommendations. 10/10 would recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh.
D. K.
Wandered into this place after a long day of discovering Edinburgh. From the outside it just looked like an average, newer pub. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the drinks on tap AND I was even happier after discovering their "whisky bible" which gave a brief description of all the distilleries and the whisky's they offered. Would highly recommend coming here if anyone is looking for good whisky at decent prices!
J. B.
DO NOT!!!!!! Walk past this fantastic little pub !! Good real ale and really helpful and friendly staff and very welcoming to all of us and our dog. Brilliant!!
G. D.
Good friendly bar on Rose Street; the right level of busy (should get a seat but not packed). Excellent selection of whisky especially Islay, great Ardbeg and Kilchoman. Very wanky WiFi password.
M. C.
Must be the place to be. Very busy when I went in. No problem there because it's a bar. There was a table of artists playing music and I really enjoyed listening to them. They have Beavertown Salty Kiss which is a delicious beer. Would recommend for drinks
J. L.
Excellent beer and whisky selection. Helpful staff who seem to know what they're on about. Good atmospheres. Bit pricey but what do you expect in the Centers of Edinburgh.
L. T. E.
Lovely people. Was in town for a job interview, popped in for a quick drink, bartender starts chatting me up. Had a nice chat about Scotch, told her I was in town for an interview, and as I was leaving her and the rest of the patrons all wished me good luck. A very pleasant experience, and for the overly curious types: I got the job.
r. h.
Whisky expert here was brilliant and loved the friendly atmosphere
A. D.
The Black Cat is a lovely, cosy feeling pub. There is live music sometimes, which is always fun when it's a folk band.
It is especially nice in the summer when you can sit outside and enjoy a whisky, as they have a huge range.
T. a. l. i. F.
Traditional bar with a good selection of cask ales.
K. S.
Great place for a rest and a drink.
G. M.
A very nice pub, efficient and friendly bar staff and a good selection of drinks. The music was just at the right level and there were enough seats. Very much a pub to meet your friends or for a casual first date.
L. w.
This place is awesome. The bartender is very friendly, polite and is great at his job :) the wine is 9 quid, so cheap and it tastes so nice. Really chilled out vibes with nice music. It’s a good one!!
J. R.
Great pub - very knowledgeable staff and an excellent whiskey selection. The atmosphere is great with live music and plenty of people. Got talking to strangers and came back twice during our short stay! Would be our go to pub!
M. Q.
Friendly staff plenty of out door seating, good selection of food. Nice location too.
D. M.
This is a place to beat the crowds to. We often go on a Friday afternoon for a few drinks if we finish work early, and always try and get there early as seating is limited.
The drinks prices are reasonable, and the bar snacks are yummy - I can particularly recommend the haggis balls.
Overall, not somewhere to spend your whole night, but a good starter pub and meeting place!
S. M.
A ton of scotch options. Some fairly normal beers and a very minimal cocktails.
They also have bar food options
C. S.
A nice little bar in the centre of Edinburgh, great location to meet up if heading anywhere else in town. They have a huge selection of whisky and good beer on tap. The staff are friendly and will happily whip you up a cocktail on request. There is sometimes live music in the bar, which is small but there is seating outside too which is ideal in the good weather. The prices are reasonable for the city centre. All in all a good place to start your evening or to spend an afternoon catching up with friends.
S. W.
Really good beers and whisky. The staff were highly knowledgeable about their products and went out of their way to make your visit an exceptional one. The place is done out in a shabby chique way and it really works for it. They also host a range of events throughout the year which I believe are very popular.
s. g. k.
maybe i drank oak whisky? flavor was great. really good
l. a.
At one point a group of locals started to play traditional misic, it was fantastic.
S. S.
Great wee dark bar with massive whisky selection
D. C.
Great wee pub on Rose Street. Our go-to for work drinks. It can be quite tight for space but the beer is good and the staff are great. The food snacks are decent too
S. C.
Nice little bar on Rose Street to catch up with friends in. The drinks are particularly reasonable - I think they do house wine at a fairly bargainous price since that's usually my tipple of choice there. Fairly small so better for smaller groups than large and on a sunny day the place open rights open with seats outside on the street.
M. S.
Best pub in Edinburgh. Hayden is a real treat and will give you the best possible service! Be sure to stop in and give them all some love.
C. m. Z.
Nice pub, with friendly efficient staff
S. B.
Great bar. Def one to go to again
L. G.
Delicious house whiskey. His owner is very nice and attentive. We had a good time.
M. S.
Lovely friendly staff and a fantastic selection of whiskey's to sample.
H. P. M. L.
Love this place. Dog and child friendly, amazing range of beers and whisky, good honest pub food, great staff and lovely location. Highly recommend
J. G.
Popped into The Black Cat for a pint on a recent weekday evening. There is a cluster of pubs on Rose Street (most of which we haven't tried yet), but we chose this one based on its impressive reviews. Immediately loved the relaxed atmosphere and decor, marveled at the impressive whisky selection. There were two tasty ales on tap which we happily drank down.
The menu of little snacky things looked tempting - we'll have to give them a try on our next visit. We will definitely be back. I could see this place becoming a regular stop for us as we settle into our Edinburgh routine.
B. R.
Excellent bar with knowledgeable staff. Good selection of whisky.
M. H.
Outstanding little whisky bar with an incredibly friendly team!
m. o. n.
Only there for one drink, but buzzy spot and friendly staff
L. C.
Super friendly staff and nice tables outside and inside.
Draugh beer selection could use a couple more options
M. I.
Visited this place recently with friends, nice local place, located in city centre, very polite and friendly bar tenders, you can buu very different types of beverages, local Scottish beers and lots of other stuff, food is served here only untill 7pm so that is not the best for customers, minimum card spend is 10£ but you can buy drink and ask for cash back 6£ so nex drink you can get paying by cash. Overall good place, they are closing at 1.30 am. Music is a bit too loud there.
C. G.
Great place to have a beer and enjoy live music.
J. H.
My husband and I took a friend to the Black Cat for a whisky tasting on his birthday. Cullen did a fantastic job teaching us about the whiskies as we sampled them. The food was good too!
G. L.
Visited a few pet friendly pubs and was disappointed with them. Almost didn't go in to The Black Cat because it looked expensive and very quaint with a lovely Christmas ambience. It was very friendly and very reasonably priced. Not expensive at all. Top notch!😉
L. M.
Excellent service from the bar staff with the Fern tattoo, amazing whiskey knowledge and unique local stories.
L.
Great whiskey selection and really helpful and knowledgeable staff who were great at finding a whiskey for you. Nice beer available as well.
D. M.
Epic. Lovely staff. Dealt with rowdy crowd well. Appreciated appropriately rowdy crowd (from Belfast)
H.
The bartender and the staff work there were really polite and were very kind. The drinks there were *chef's kiss*.
B. M.
Excellent service and selection of modern ales.
N. R.
Nice live music, great beers and great choice of gins.
You have to be lucky to get a table outside on a sunny afternoon, but once you got one you won't leave until the sun is gone and you're f***ed up. LOL
S. D.
So cute,artistic & cosy.Lovely staff & fab prosecco❤
J. S.
Good friendly atmosphere. The insides remind me of a pirate ship but in a good way. Friendly staff and a deecent selection of drinks to choose from plus whiskey flights available if interested
I. J.
Good pub and atmosphere.
J. J.
Do you want whisky tasting with a local expert? Drop by immediately. Found a new favorite scotch whisky from Isle of Islay. It turns out I love peat.
L. S.
Warm and cosy pub with a huge selection of whisky. The bar staff are fantastic, very friendly and fun. It's a small pub but we have always managed to get a table.
M.
Visited here lots of times and it is so friendly and drinks and good good.
M. F.
The music (currently 9.30 - closing M, W & Th nights & especially Su lunch), which is unamplified, draws in a convivial mix of visitors and locals.
Scotland has amazing young traditional players and in Edinburgh this is surely one of the very best places to experience their art in an informal setting
The young and very knowledgeable bar staff will talk you through the tasting notes of the hundreds in display.
There is also gluten free beer on tap, which may be some indication of The Black Cat's Transatlantic appeal(!).
Highly, highly recommended.
N. W.
The place is nice, the staff was nice too, but I think for a glass of wine 250ml and a bottle of Coke Zero £9.55 is a bit too much.
M. F.
Great place, incredible choice.
B. O.
Bar keep was super helpful. Great prices on drinks. Live music was fantastic. Best pub we've gone to so far in Edinburgh.
f. g. m.
Great whiskies selection.
S. M.
Awesome crew that works there from management through too all staff, who portray professionalism at the same time as eager to please and make you enjoy your visit....would definitely recommend and keep an eye out for the long haired Australian larrakin Ryan who is always good for a yarn or 5
M. K.
Love the place for the service. Really kind and polite and professional. Highly recommended.
P. L.
Exxon West the covered protocols and very nice pub to go to be as could have been better as and more off but that as await those lovely 1st day out
J. C.
Lovely place for a good dram!
C. F.
Tiny wee bar, barely room to swing a cat. Big range of whisky so worth a trip if you want to sample the various flights on offer. Poor selection of draught lager and beer.
N. C.
Nice pub great staff
E. T.
Cheap drinks but full of atmosphere, sometimes you manage to catch some locals performing live music. The food is standard pub grub done very well.
C. S.
Really great atmosphere. Went with a small group of friends but would be perfect for a date. The drinks are really reasonable priced for how central the bar is.
s. h.
Spent a few hours in here on Sunday afternoon listening to what I think was Scottish folk music. Whatever it was it was great. Really nice crowd and staff.
R. L.
Great bar, good music and better beer.
M. W.
