Reviews of The Conan Doyle
R. B.
Traditional pub with great food selection (recommend the fish and chips) and nice service. Always a nice atmosphere to go to whether quiet or busy.
D. P.
Nice and cozy traditional pub with a great selection of local gins and ales.
You definitely have to try the pies! One of the best around
D. A.
Great pub, was very busy on the day we went but was worth it. Food was excellent, drink selection was good and the staff were friendly and attentive. Would go back if in the area.
A. C.
Thrilled with this place. I was worried they might not be as nice because they have the benefit of appealing to anyone who is a Sherlock Holmes enthusiast. But fear not! The food was outstanding and not too expensive. I had the haggis (my first) and my husband had the steak pie. Both were delicious and very filling. And do ask for whisky sauce, it was worth it. :)
Great service, beautiful place. Definitely would go again and recommend.
N. C.
I've been here many times and not been disappointed. The prices are fairly standard and the menu has plenty of options. On the last visit I opted for the crofters pie and it was really good.
V. D.
Cosy pub, friendly staff, lovely grub! We actually left the Cafe Royal as it was so cold and decided to pop in here!! Good decision and cheaper too!
M. S.
Nice place, quick service, lot to choose from, will be back
N. T.
The pub is nice and has a good atmosphere, the staff is friendly and kind. The toilets was clean and nice. The only bad thing was my food. The steak was very chewy. And my friends want to eat fish and chips but they only have one portion and they ran out of every fish. But after all we had a great evening there.
A. M.
Great atmosphere and a tasty meal. The music choice, however, is interesting and doesn’t fit the vibe of the pub. It was distracting and somewhat annoying, honestly.
A. C.
Fresh food, quick & friendly service, great atmosphere! Beer was little bit dissapointing but still enjoyable. Meat pie and scotch egg were truly amazing.
R. L.
Loved this place and would definitely recommend. Just a few minutes from Prince Street. They have amazing fish and chips and a great choice of beers. Lovely and warm interior. If I'm back to Edinburgh, i would definitely visit again.
S. n.
Part of the Nicholsons chain so good standard of food. It was busy on the Friday night that we went but only had to wait 15 minutes for a table to free up. Good service but it was a little noisy as it's not a very large area. Will go again though and a good place if you want a bit of old Edinburgh atmosphere with a dash of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle memorabilia.
M. L.
Lovely food it's great place to eat as we were heading across the road to the Theatre .
G. T.
Very busy if you want meal in restaurant section you should book . Staff friendly nice setting
D. H.
First time dining at the conan doyle it wont be the last i think we have found our default go to place for dinner. The social distance set up is impeccable you had to book a table beforehand with all your details that done you turn up sanitize your hands are escorted to your table and given your disposable menu. Your order is taken and your food delivered to the table. Our waiter jordan was fab really really good.
All in all a very good experience in the new norm of covid eating out i would say the conan doyle nailed it.
D. M. (.
Great restaurant that was recommended by the front desk staff at our hotel. Cozy atmosphere, quick and friendly service and the food was fantastic. They were out of pies unfortunately but the fish and chips were great. Highly recommended!
T. B.
Only had a drink here but it was a nice little spot at one of the busiest intersections in Edinburgh. Large selection of beer and traditional Scottish food is available.
S. K.
Nice typical British pub.
Good selection og beers on tap and Gin.
They hade a great selection of gins.
Nice place to get a pint or a gin with a British pub atmosphere.🍺
J. (.
Best chips I've had in Edinburgh so far. I was never a big fan of thick cut chips (compared to French fries) as many of them are wrongly done - soft, wet, boring and tasteless. But these 'triple fried' chips offerred by Conan Doyle changed my view on chips.
Very cosy place. Staff are helpful and welcoming. Definitely one of my favourites.
J. L.
A traditional pub with a nice interior, great selection of beers i had a couple of pints of Titanic brewery's plum porter which were excellent prices are what you expect in Edinburgh. Would go back again.
N. M.
I had the steak pie and loved it, my boyfriend ordered the crofters pie and didn't like it too much, probably because everything was mixed together. The pub atmosphere seemed authentic, the kind of place locals go to.
D. C.
Great staff ,excellent cask beer and enjoyable small plates of food in a lovely traditional pub with good music.
B. W.
Good pub! Close to Doyle's birthplace and nicely decorated. It was very busy, but the staff were professional and service was quick.
Food could have been better, pretty average pub fare, bit decent for the price.
P.
First time n a long time. £4.40 for a pint off t lager. Bit steap but neatheraless a good pont as you would expect. Awaiting my bus hame after a 13 hour shift
M. H.
I like the place. It's a Nicholson pub and has the separation of eating and drinking. They definitely need to utilise the availability versus visitors by using the space when the kitchen times vary or close.
Busy place
P. L.
Nice place for a beer, plus it is the closest place to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's birthplace, unmissable for Sherlock Holmes's fans. The staff is friendly and the choice of beer, wide and tempting. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, ideal for a meeting with friends or a date.
J. K.
We only stayed for a quick drink but this historical pub also served up your basic pub grub. If you're into Sherlock Holmes you'll find a few nuggets of about the writer, which makes this pub moderately more interesting than some of the other ones we visited.
P. W.
Lovely cosy pub on a freezing cold evening! Didn't eat there but food looked good.
D. R.
Lovely old fashioned bar . Great range of beer and excellent food. Beware if you want to eat I recommend you book to avoid disappointment its worth it
D. M.
Traditional pub that never let's you down, good selection of drinks and friendly staff.
Part of the Nicholson Pub chain so app ordering is available.
S. L.
Great pub. Worth getting in early though if you want to eat!
K.
Not hugely overpriced for Edinburgh but quite small and is often cramped. Good whisky selection.
P. R.
Very nice spot, good food, reasonable pricing. Nice experience if you're around.
S. J.
Interested historic vibe in this busy pub! We really enjoyed our meal and the wait staff was very helpful and friendly!
T. D. S. M. &. H. C.
The only pub in the world that I genuinely love going to. Its like stepping back in time and feels luxurious.
S. S.
Have always enjoyed the food here when visiting Edinburgh. I would say now it's even better.
T. S.
Wonderful burgers. A 10 scottish pub. Quiet place at Edinburgh downtown.
R. R.
Very welcome atmosphere, music not deafening, excellent selection of ales n whisky. Would recommend to anyone.
J. B.
The service was great and the food was of a very high standard! Simple things done well and all made on site with local ingredients.
M. J.
Lovely Nicholson’s pub, gorgeously festive for Christmas. Delish grub and good booze selection.
I. Y.
Wish we'd eaten here looked fantastic but unfortunately had a table booked elsewhere, nice selection of beers and all well kept & reasonably priced would highly recommend
D. Y.
One of the best pubs in Edinburgh. Very busy so pick your times, close to the Playhouse so always busy an hour before they start, prices ok staff know there stuff but not really got much time to chat. Happy enough though. Good place to meet.
I. K.
Had lunch here during an afternoon. Located pretty much next to York Place tram stop which is currently end of the line although lots of roadworks going on nearby to extend the line.
Named after Conan Doyle himself whose bithplace was nearby. Stunning looking period exterior make it very inviting. Phoned before to make sure I could be accommodated due to current capacity restrictions & all was fine & was asked to check in via Gov app upon entry.
Disappointed that there didn't seem to be much available in terms of cask beer & instead had a bottle of the Nicholson 80 shilling which is a dark almost stout looking beer which was very nice. For my food I had the house Fish (haddock)& Chips with mushy peas which was a generous portion & good quality. Again not too much choice, maybe limited currently, but meal was nice & enjoyed my lunch. Food a little on the pricey side but probably geared to passing tourists.
Nice place but would probably look elsewhere next time.
M. P.
Love this pub. Nice atmosphere, historical place. Very quick service and friendly, attentive staff. Good place for a drink. Haven't tried the food.
K. C.
Delicious food and very fast staff.
L. B.
Really lovely food. The chicken burger was a thing of beauty (in my daughter's words). The pies were delicious and finished off with chocolate brownies....yum. Great place with a lovely atmosphere.
J. R.
We had a lovely first evening in Edinburgh here! Vers friendly staff! We got some nice tips and the food was lovely.
Y. B.
Nice pub and lovely staff. On a busy Saturday afternoon, it was good to find somewhere we could get a table for drinks. Nice atmosphere too.
L. L. D.
It's a very nice place to go for eat and drink. Fabulous fish and very good whisky. The staff is very nice and some of them speak french if needed.
A. O.
Food 2 - steak pie almost 15 pounds, 4 pieces of steak in, pastry too strong, vegetables no taste.
Waiters 4
K. C.
Very relaxing pub and the food is very good
N. C.
Nice pub. Food and drink was great. Service was excellent. Only disappointment was the ladies toilets. One of our friends did point it out to the staff. Hopefully they have addressed this.
J. G.
Nice little pub friendly staff stopped in for after theatre drinks
N. T.
Nice pub serving very good pub food with several Scottish dishes which looked very good to me (but I am not Scottish!). Be sure you check the cutlery before you use it and be ready you might need to wait a bit to be served, but all in all we had a very good meal and would recommend it/go back
F. M.
Really nice atmosphere and a great selection! However it is expensive!
L.
Smashing wee bar. First time in here and I was very impressed. The guys behind the bar were super friendly and the food was divine.
T. S.
Enjoyed an afternoon here. Great selection of beers
j. l.
A nice period establishment, welcoming polite staff, service was really good. Would definitely recommend
c.
Came to the pub after arriving at our hotel room early,
Weather was a bit naff but staff welcoming and friendly!!
We both ordered pies and as a speciality pie house we were not dissapointed!!
They even helped me find a pub that would show the lions match ( that's rugby for non fans)
Only downfall was that my landlord pint was nearing the end of the barrel but they replaced it straight away so can't complain!!
Y. L.
Great atmosphere, and great view, you can see Conan Doyle style clothing and books in side the room.
L. K.
Great atmosphere, lovely decor theme
J. W.
Lovely friendly pub with very good staff, even though the got the order slightly wrong the food we got was delicious. Try the haggis sausages they were heaven on a plate
f.
Quiet during the day. Ask the staff for off menu beers.
C. M.
Phenomenal service with a extremely homely feel would strongly recommend to anyone passing through this area 10/10
M. L.
Great pub. Very friendly, professional staff. Lively pub at all times of day. Good real ale.
J. B.
Delicious meal - the Nourish Bowl. Great atmosphere. Busy but comfortable with attentive service. Thank you ❤️
t. g. r. c.
Nice wee pub for drinks before and after the theatre
D. S.
Great Nicholson's pub with an extensive daily menu and good beer. Ideal for a meal prior to a theatre stop
R. B.
The staff were very friendly. The food was very tasty and in very good proportions. Very good atmosphere.
d. e.
Second night we went to this place, 22.10. We were told we couldn't get in because no tables and they were full? I pointed out that a whole window section that could seat around 16 was empty. The barman said I'm sorry that's the restaurant section and we couldn't sit there? We were seated there the previous night no problem. Think the manager had the night off and they couldn't be bothered cleaning again.. I said should me and my wife just go then to which he replied in his Irish accent (no problem with our friends the Irish) yes!. We left and won't return. So sad after we had a lovely time the night before and were so impressed with the way it was being covidly run. Shame!
I. E.
Nice Pub. Good selection of Gin. Nice food and friendly staff. Worth a visit. Premier Inn hotel across the road.
M. S.
Great food as always. The only thing was we were right under a TV and it was far to loud luckily we we leaving just after rugby started. The rest of the bar and restaurant was quiet compared to the downstairs.
A. D.
Great menu, location and atmosphere
E. C.
Delicious meal. Mum had the haddock and chips and we both had the balmoral chicken. Great atmosphere and fantastic service. Will be back.
A. D.
Great pub for a cozy evening drink. Tastefully decorated. Wee expensive. But the food is good.
G. S.
Great old fashioned pub great service and staff friendly
D. S.
Good selection of real ales. For food, best to book ahead.
A. M.
Nice atmosphere, staff very friendly and attentive however I chose stovies to eat which was of a pretty poor standard.
T. M.
Poor staff run off their feet. Food was delicious.
J. W.
Proper pub, great staff. Not a sport pub. (Which I normally frequent) actually nice to enjoy a beer without to TVs blaring. Most importantly tasty pint
B. S.
Great food. Reasonably priced.
L. M.
Great atmosphere and super tasty food!
S. B.
Nice pub friendly atmosphere good choice of beverages and also food menu available.
B. Y.
Given we are in the time of Covid, service was slow but Steak and Ale pie was delicious and ambiance was delightful.
S.
First taste of Haggis and it was awesome! Definitely recommend trying it here and nice atmosphere with friendly staff
D. f.
Went to Edinburgh for a few days and found this lovely little pub, and discovered innis and Gunn beer mmm
M.
Lovely chilled out place. They have a separate area for those who are eating but most importantly the staff are brilliant.
e. j.
Wee chill after being dragged round shopping mall
J. G.
I was disappointed in this place. I only had one choice for gluten free food. My husband was disappointed in his steak pie.
L. H.
I wanted somewhere easy to find to meet up with my brother for lunch. I know the pub has good ales. We asked for a table as it wasn't busy and the barman said he would clean one up for us. We sat down and after about 10mins it was still a mess from the previous customers. We had to find our own menu. We did get the table cleaned by someone else, the food was nice enough. We had to ask for cutlery as the table really hadn't been reset. On paying they had slapped a service charge on to the bill. I don't mind paying if I know if we knew it was going to be added. There was only 3 of us! I know large groups pay this. The service we got really didn't warrant it. Disappointed as this was once my favourite watering hole. I don't think I'll be back.
S. D.
Great pub food and drinks. Lovely staff.
B. M.
Was served by a lovely lady called Anna, very nice tenants as well!
D. S.
Great pub,had a couple of beers after a days shopping
P. T.
Lovely food and nice atmosphere
D. C.
Fantastic food and really friendly and helpful staff will definitely give it another visit next time we in Edinburgh
S. R.
We Called at the pub on the off chance of finding a table for food and watch the rugby. Although busy, the staff soon found us a table for two.
In a nutshell - Excellent food and ale, Great atmosphere.and service. Recommended! Well worth a visit.
R. A.
Service incredibly slow and poor, orders were missed and incorrect. Brought out side dishes and sauces after eaten meals.
N. H.
Good pint, friendly staff
a. p.
awesome place, especially for fan of Sherlock Holmes like me. friendly staff, superb pies!
D. B.
Great bar, loads of history in this place (like most of Edinburgh). Great place to start the night, very good selection of ales and beers. Can't speak for the food, but I really like the atmosphere. Definitely recommend having a beer or two here
R. P.
Nice little proper pub near my hotel so I stopped by for dinner. The atmosphere was typical cozy pub (as expected). The service was friendly and prompt (as expected). Ordered a dark ale, which was very tasty. The Cullen Skink was excellent with a light (not too smokes) thick broth with lots of fish in it (unlike some pubs I've been). The fish and chips was good but I have had better (more crispy, more fish to batter ratio), multiple pieces options. It was just that too many bites of the fish were pure fried batter or more batter than fish. So for me this is a good pub but I will take my fish and chips somewhere else.
S. F.
Great food. Staff lovely and very helpful 're allergies. Great location for trams. Covid 19 safe.
S. C.
Really good food and a cosy atmosphere. Staff very friendly.
R. M.
Sunday Roast (Chicken) was delightful. Service amazing. Paid by card, which meant could not leave a tip. If you do, please take some cash to leave a well deserved extra for the polite, agreeable and hard working waiting staff
R. S.
Best pub meal we had the whole time we were in town.
M. C.
Food was delicious! The decor and history is pretty cool!
J. O.
Brilliant food, very friendly staff, good location with good atmosphere even at busiest times
J. S.
Nice older worlde pub but most of the drinks on the menu was out of stock and the real ale wasn't good at all
A. J.
No price showing in the drink menu. Staffs are not having a good customer service. However, decoration is beautiful. They do some craft beer also.
J. G.
Warm welcome on arrival polite staff great selection of beverage and excellent menu. Prompt service will be back
P. H.
Great pub, a good selection of beers, ales and stouts. Warm, inviting, nicely laid out and staff were friendly and helpful. Food was pretty good on the whole for my friends but my burger wasn't the best. Next time I'll order a pie which looked amazing, but hey can't wait to go back for another pint!
P. A. H.
I don't get to this side of town too often, but when I do this is a place I just love.
I. C.
Relaxing ambiance. Good beer!
S. W.
Great, traditional old pub. Nice surroundings & quiet. Lovely food, the steak & ale pie & the newly created fish pie were really nice. Can recommend. Scott was really friendly & helpful. Will go again when back in Edinburgh.
A. C.
Nice food and atmosphere. I had some haggis and potatoes and it was worth it. Really kind service. We went with our 1.8 y.o. daughter. They had an high seat for her. Good value for money in my opinion :)
e. m.
Good food ,haggis etc was very tasty. Starter with smoked salmon and oatcakes, needs butter for the oatcakes.
D. J.
Very nice food.
S. A. A.
Delicious haggis, amazing crofters pie, friendly stuff, and wonderful ambience.
M. B.
My fiancee and I made this our pub when we stayed in Edinburgh. We stayed across the street which made coming here frequently tempting. She's vegan and Conan Doyle provides a few items that really hit the vegan spot - the lentil and cottage pie, the red pepper tarte, and their salads. It was also a wonderfully cozy place to sit and chat after a day of sightseeing.
A. B.
We had really nice moments, great stuff, authentic enterior and lovely Scottish dessert 😃
D. S.
Really nice and cozy place to have some drinks!
M. H.
An excellent pub, made extra special by the careful way they addressed my coeliac dietary needs, lovely food, oldie atmosphere and vast choice of quality drink. To be recommended.
J. H.
Food was decent, but trying to get a seat was horrible. The staff wouldn't even look at you while you waited for a table. Once seated, it took a while to place a drink order and then a food order. Servers were kind, but all in all, go to a local pub vs the chain restaurant.
S. W.
If you can not guess from the name, this is an English style pub. The places is styled to look and feel like an classic English study. They have a long list of beers, ciders, and drinks. And they are famous for their pies, I shared two pies, the steak and mushroom, and steak and red wine. Both were excellent and the gravy was amazing. Not like most restaurants in the area they do not take reservations and welcome new customers. Lastly the staff is excellent and friendly and helpful.
G. M.
Had the haddock and chips. Actually really good, portion size ideal for me but looked small on the plate. Drink prices not bad for city centre. I'll give it 4.5.
R. m.
Stopped here 3 times on our 4 day trip to Edinburgh from Portsmouth, found it purely by accident walking past and decided to stop for a drink, went back in the evening for dinner the first night and back in the 3rd night to try something else on the menu, didn't disappoint us once. Will come back for sure & recommend to friends travelling up this way!
P. E.
Nice pub. The decor is not better from other pubs in Edinburgh, making this quite a common establishment. The bar staff I got when there, was nice but not that professional, ending up in serving us the wrong drinks. Price wise was not bad, but definitely its aimed to tourists.
M. S.
Had a wonderful time and great meals. Staff were very friendly. On our three nights in Edinburgh we ate there each night. Great atmosphere. It added to our fabulous experience of the city.
S. M.
Went for lunch in the Conan Doyle. Staff were very attentive and it was nice to be greeted with a smile!
The food I ordered (gammon steak) was well cooked and well presented. It was also tasty!
Slightly raised from the street it is quieter than its position suggests Will happily return at a future date
F. S.
We happened to come across this pub by chance when popping out before dinner.
Nice pub, friendly staff.
W. S.
I first just came in for a beer but the great atmosphere and the sight and smell from all the food made me order some food. I took The pie With steak, ale and mushroom. It was very very good, The staff was great too. Will go back next time I am in edinburgh
K. B.
Long time since I have visited this place but still as great as ever
H. A.
Great place for a meal and a drink. Excellent food. Definitely try the cask ales.
E. L. M.
The Conan Doyle is a great Scottish pub where you can eat delicious food. The selection of drinks is quite good. The staff is quite friendly and attentive. A clear recommendation. The pub is very centrally located and easy to reach. 👍
S. C.
Lovely bar friendly bar staff
L. S.
Nipped in for a drink then decided to come back for a meal. Staff friendly and food excellent. Can recommend smoked haddock and kedgeree fish cakes and the beef, ale and mushroom pie.
C. B.
Lovely place. Drinks reasonable priced & staff very friendly.
D. A.
It's a pub. It has good beer. Well appointed and clean. Friendly staff.
K. R.
Excellent food and good beer
K. F.
Great we pub across from the Playhouse. We went there before the 6 Nations Scotland v France game and it was full of rugby fans. I'd recommend booking a table on match day. Food was excellent, although the neeps could have done with more seasoning. The large onion rings were a huge portion, almost a meal in its own. Would recommend the mac and cheese, very smokey flavour and the crunchy topping was ace.
R. V.
It,s wonderful pub!¡!
E. A.
Food was lovely! Especially the haggis and the vegan pie! Service was excellent, will return again!
D. S.
Traditional style pub but with an up to date fresh feel. No spit and sawdust here. The food was good and there was a good selection of beers. Nice relaxed and freindly atmosphere with a mixture of locals and tourists.
A. F.
Nice lively pub with good atmosphere, we had a lovely meal my husband tried the haggis and was very impressed. Good location near to main city centre. Would definitely recommend.
Z. M.
I did not have a great experience here, perhaps it was off hours or under staffing but my experience was killed by moldy flowers, dirty drink ware and not great tasting fish and chips. Atmosphere was lovely and pleasant and everything but the glasses and flowers were clean and tidy. Also nice and courteous wait staff. Hope you guys take these tips seriously.
S. K.
Be sure, kitchen is closed around 9:00 on Sundays... it was disappointing for me that I couldn’t order a pie I’d been really looking forward to because of my friend’s strong recommendation, but anyway I enjoyed a pint thanks to a nice staff. Now I’ve got an excuse to come back here again. The atmosphere is totally nice.
M. F.
Just popped in for pee and a pint (well it would be rude not to!) Nice pint of Deuchars IPA reasonable price £3.20. Cozy wee place. Pleasant staff as well. Smell of food is Awesome!
Л. П.
The Conan Doyle is a very good pub which is especially dear for me as it is called after one of my favourite writers and located near his birthplace.
There you can get traditional Scottish food and ales.
Highly recommended.
D. H.
Loved this pub! The meat pies were delicious! Their scotch selection was good and reasonably priced, and the atmosphere and service was great. Very nice place to go!
R. A. B.
The food and beer choice is amazing! Specially if you want yo have a taste of Scottish cuisine. A must if you pass through Edinburgh or come here on a holiday.
T. S.
Food was decent, but they had run out of half of their ale taps, as well as the first couple of things we tried to order on the menu.
As well, the service forgot us for a while and we ended up waiting 45 minutes for our food to come out after we finished our appetizer.
S. R.
Really friendly pub the staff Claire in particular was fantastic helping me with my mobility issues
J. Y. (. Y.
Great pub to sit and have a drink in and catch up with friends
R. U.
A distant arm of the Nicholsons pub chain. Reasonable selection of ales and an uninspiring tourist focused menu. Very much a tourist destination but none the worse for it. Not worth a detour but of you get caught in a passing shower there are worse places to take shelter
D. M.
Huge disappointed :( I ordered steak pie which was super small, the beef was cheap and difficult to chew and the beer was warm! Waste of money.
Three stars only for atmosphere and the very friendly stuff.
C. R.
Great find. Nicholson 's pub with a good range of beers, wife had Moorhead, whilst I had a winter ale that i could have sworn was called Frosty ale but can't seem to find it on their website. The pictures I have added show that they have tried to keep the Victorian theme throughout. Glad we spotted this place.
M. C.
Busy popular pub great food friendly staff 👍
G. B.
Great food, reasonable prices, not too busy
P. M.
Lovely selection of malt whiskies.
G. T.
I have been several times before and it's an older traditional pub that has a very good selection of beers on tap and great pub menu although we didn't eat this time, highly recommend
B.
Classic Edinburgh pub, they offer a large selection of drinks in the standard local style pub (classy and old timey). I was a bit disappointed by the attention given to the preparation of my gin and tonic, which was pretty much inexistent (throw half a slice of lime and a couple ice cubes in there and call it a day, literally what I do at home).
R. K.
Great beer, lively but super pies not a stew with a pastry lid. Good wholesome tasty food reasonable price and not too long a wait, biggest issue is finding an empty table..
S. W.
A classic old school Edinburgh pub. Rustic, small and intimate with a nice atmosphere. Good selection of gin and whisky
P. H.
Good pub with a decent menu and good views over York Place. Beer prices a bit steep, but off the tourist run so that's the plus, you have time to mix with the locals. Worth a visit.
J. H.
I stumbled into this place as I was early for dinner plans. It was busy and hard to get a table. The drinks and service were uneventful, can't even remember if it was reasonably priced. The room was filled with smells from the kitchen. Somehow I was left with a warm and cosy impression though.
J. P.
We arrived at the place by finding it by Google then we find it ...nice place, nice interior and the 2 lads in the bar are fantastic. The best here is the food wow it's really delicious. Best Burger in Edinburgh 10/10.
N. S.

G. T.
I am a big fan of the Sherlock Holmes books and have read them all, so just had to pop in here for a pint. Well worth it lovely atmosphere and good Beers, the food looked great too.
C. H.
Great pub food, amazing service. Definitely recommended.
F. D.
Super nice pub. The waiters & waitreses were wonderful. The food was amazing & the atmosphere incomparable! Bravo!
J. M. (.
A smart pub not far away from the Playhouse, excellent pint of Guinness
S. H.
I had to drop in here today (Sunday 19th jan) as my mum took ill outside. We were so well looked after by the staff from the start. Once mum was well enough to sit down at a table they gave us free tea and kept asking if we were ok. All 3 members of staff I could see looked after us. I just want to say a big thank you to the men again.
R. F.
This place is AMAZING! This place is so cool and the food is delicious! The setting of the place is so cozy. I am from America and the only reason I want to come back to Edinburgh is for this pub!! Go to it, you won't regret it!
D. B.
Great pub for beer, and very cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Food isn't all that great, but then you don't come here for the food. :)
A. S.
Great pub in Edinburgh, cozy atmosphere, good food and beers. Been there just for a fast lunch before leaving (unluckily). Totally worth it, if in Edinburgh again, I will surely return.
s. w.
Good beer nice vibe paddy's were ok
M. L.
Really delicious food. Nice service.
R. L.
Was great till the boss caught us having a pint at lunchtime 😆
d. h.
Great food and good atmosphere. Very good whiskey , loved it
A. N.
Great beer choices and the prices are what you expect in the city centre.
Was there on a very busy Friday but the service was quick and friendly.
D. M.
Very cosy snug type bat with a fine range if wines spirits, cocktails and other drinks. Also simple but very good food served in a warm friendly atmosphere.
L. G.
A proper pub.very friendly staff .excellent food and beer.
C. M.
In for drinks in afternoon and enjoyed so much went back for meal before pictures. Excellent food with plenty on menu. Delicious! We'll be back.
S. S.
Awesome atmosphere, great food and wine.
M. S.
Great food, friendly and quick service. Quiet little pub with wonderful decor!
L. B.
Great place.
Fine service and a great menu of traditional eats.
Fine whisky selection.
We loved the atmosphere
A. A.
Great food and environment. It's a bit pricey but not exaggerated. The waiting staff looked really inexperienced, they forgot our drinks and they didn't knew the menus from memory to explain our questions, which takes away the 5 stars.
P. O.
Standard Mitchell & Butlers chain establishment
A. S.
We were affeciandos of Nicholson group pubs with a basic menu but their prices now have gone up disproportionately to other pubs in the area. We'll not be back at any of them.
A. D.
The wait was long and the manager apologized about it. We didn't get seated as we were in a rush but he recommended several other restaurants in the area to try that the locals approve of. Very friendly.
d.
Great drinks! And the pub is amazingly decorated on the inside.
D. K.
Love this place.cant come to Edinburgh wighout calling in.came fot tea today with family.now called back before bed for a tipple
W. S.
Covid, looking after everyone.
Hospitality absolutely brilliant.
We will endeavour to include the Conan Doyle when we come to Edinburgh next year. Thank you guys.
J. M.
When on a trip to Edinburgh we always make our way to The Conan Doyle. Today just decided on a quick bar snack. It was quick to arrive and tasty to eat. Always worth a visit .
T. M. N.
Really nice steak and ale pie... something I've really missed since moving away... great staff, great service, really lovely start to our hogmanay! 😁
A. T.
Interesting wee pub off Leith Walk and next to St Mary's Cathedral. Fair selection of craft beer (ales) - some better than others, but Jaipur is always nice. As name suggests, Edinburgh-born-and-brought-up Sherlock Holmes author features prominently, although much to my disappointment I have yet to meet his ghost towards the end of a drinking session, unlike Ian Rankin (apparently).
N. W.
You get a great meal lovely staff would recommend this place
S. F.
A Nickelson Pub - nothing remarkable - felt the ladies behind the bar a bit arrogant - toilets very clean and spacious by UK standards. They keep the pub too warm for a cold climate where the customers are wearing cold weather gear.
K. A.
Second trip to Edinburgh, had to go again. Great pies, great gin/tonics/beer. Lovely atmosphere. Get a reservation.
A. K.
Great. Good food, service and beer.
P. B.
Great pub, friendly staff, good prices for city centre
B. W.
Considering its central location next to a busy intersection with traffic and road works, and many tourist patrons keeping staff busy, the Conan Doyle does a fine job serving hearty warm food, getting you a bit of peace and quiet in a relaxing and well kept historical building, and serving you quickly while not feeling rushed.
L. H.
Food and service were really good but £7.10 for a large red wine in this setting was way too much
Z. R.
Great pub, really easy to use their app and great staff
P. M.
Lovely decoration, splendid location, very friendly staff, great food although the steak we ordered medium came well done, but the replacement was on point.
B. C.
Okay food, decent location by the tram stop. Service could be better. The server was nice enough but it took a good hour to get served and another hour to get the check.
A. S.
Quaint Pub with cozy atmosphere. Good selection of drinks with many beers on tap. Interesting food menu. Helpful set of staff who was shorthanded.
k. o.
Friendly service and good food would like to go back.
T. E.
Standard chain pub. Little bit on the pricy side. Lacks atmosphere but then, so do many places at this time with the covid rules, etc
M. M.
The food was delicious and there are great local plates available. The staff was friendly and made some great recommendations for dinner.
R. R.
Nice cozy pub, good food. Only ruined by the football!

Nice little tavern style pub.stumbled across this pub by accident on Xmas day and glad I went in.lovely venue and the staff were great.Peroni on draught as well as a little bonus.Edinburgh prices for drinks which is expected as there not a cheap place to drink in Edinburgh.good location as right across the road from the Omni centre and the playhouse theatre
E. W.

B. F.
Great fish and chips and burgers excellent as well!

E. C.
Nice pint
K. M.
Only went for drinks. Staff friendly and attentive. Good Gin selection. Nice atmosphere
R. N.
Food is delicious and beer is good. Try the nicholson's grill and add £4 for the ultimate (upsize) which is good for 2 person. Atmosphere is laid back and cosy.
M. C.
City centre pub. Adequate drinks selection. Smart enough but has a nice atmosphere and isn't pretentious like some places nearby.
E. S.
I've been here in different occasions and it is very nice. The menu is very good, and the courses quality is higher than the average in town for what I have already tasted.
R. C.
Nice and clean, beer not for cambera drinker
A. G.
Great pub
J. G.
Beef pie and chicken and bacon salad were great. We tried new brews and were very happy with them.

M.
Good beer, really nice location that's also a bit funny since it's between two churches, good beer selection. Easy to watch sports if you want.
V. R.
Lovely building, good food and decent selection of beer. Can get very crowded with tourists due to the location.
J. C.
Friendly and helpful staff. Good range of beers (albeit slightly overpriced, but what do you expect for a capital city?!)
Will definitely return.
K. M.
Great venue with historical background food very good try the fish and chips soooooo good
K. S.
Not at all good. 50% of the menu wasn't available! The food was cold and served on cold plates and some items of food were missing!!!
This was a celebration for my 60th birthday. It was very disappointing.
P. S.
Well refurbished pub. We went for the first lunchtime after it re opened and had some good food and drink in a nice clean environment.
B. G.

W. A.
So kind.. free wifi.. amazing Scottish food!! Not on the diet though.. excellent staff!!
E. L.
More hype then anything. Food was dry but the drinks were good.
R. U.
A distant arm of the Nicholsons pub chain. Reasonable selection of ales and an uninspiring tourist focused menu. Very much a tourist destination but none the worse for it. Not worth a detour but of you get caught in a passing shower there are worse places to take shelter
S. R.
Good choice of gin. Tasty local food. Great service.
B. K.
Had dinner drinks here tonight lovely place with good food & friendly staff would recommend.

The place was quite busy so we ordered our food and drinks from the bar. The service was a bit slow because of the busyness but our food and dessert was amazing.

A. W.
Very nice pub, cosy atmosphere with great choices for drinks or ales.
J. S.
Good food and cosy atmosphere. The Conan Doyle connection is mostly just a gimmic; the place doesn't have any particular connection to the writer.
S. S.
Great food and service, the only problem we found was cold plates. Change that and it would be 5 stars plus.
李.
