Stumbled upon this lovely place having a wander through the town....Wasn't expecting a table in the restaurant as we were a walk in on valentines eve. We didnt have a booking, however the lovely waitress was able to organise a table for us complete with Rose petals and flowers . Table service was excellent served by a lovely man with impeccable manners. The food was outstanding best lamb curry I have had anywhere. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area ......highly recommended. And thank you ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Monday night. Steak, gammon steak and fishcakes ordered. All wolfed down with fab chips. The one ale option was really good, may have been 'Endless Summer.' Both the chaps on duty were friendly, engaging and made you feel important. Really great experience all round.

We were visiting town for a relative's wedding and needed a place to go the night before, everywhere was shut but this little hidden gem was buzzing! Made lots of new friends and every one was of good vibes and good people. Really enjoyed. Very busy at the bar though so definitely order a couple drinks at a time

2 meals(lamb roast) out of 3 the meals were satisfactory.. the fish, however, was extremely dry and tasteless. The atmosphere & staff were very good. The 3rd meal was taken off of the final bill.. but one of us departed still feeling hungry. They need to pick up their game .

We found this pub by walking through a church graveyard! Perfect scenery and spooky if that's what you're into! Lovely staff, very friendly. A variety of drinks and not expensive. We have come back twice in two days and plan to eat here soon! It's a must see

We visited Café René on July 23rd 2019 just before 9pm. Middle of the heatwave. The place is very nice, good atmosphere plenty of different places to sit both inside and out. Problem was they were under staffed, took ages to get served for a drink and again when We ordered food. Meal took over 40 minutes to arrive, the waiter was apologetic and friendly. They obviously had not expecting to be that busy so acceptable. BUT I ordered T bone Rare, I have included a picture for you to judge, to me that is definitely not rare! I would have said something but the bar was so busy ( Band just started) and we never saw the waiter again, not his fault he seemed to be on his own. We finished and left. Perhaps I should not judge to harshly it was Exceptional weather and they were rammed but........

Me and my husband ate there last evening. From entering the Pub to leaving we enjoyed it. Our meal was excellent as was the service. I attended the 19th Birthday celebration party here this evening, what a wonderful event! The theme was Mad Hatter's Tea party...the owner, Paul Soden was distinctive in his white suit! With bunting and clocks decorating this amazing, historic building..and a veritable feast at the 'tea table', with an alarmingly tilted 3 tiered cake as the centrepiece! Even the Mad Hatter himself put in an appearance..amusing everyone I thoroughly recommend this gem of a place, a vital part of our city centre!

Very cosy and inviting pub. Beautifully decorated and there's a working well! The staff are lovely and friendly. The food is delicious, top quality, home cooked food. High hygiene standards throughout. I have returned on many occasions for dinner, music and events and just drinks. Great for a cosy lunchtime with my other half.

I have been here a few times since I moved to Gloucester and the restrictions were lifted and I have not had a bad night yet. Good atmosphere with some decent music and a good range of drinks too. Very handy late bar at the weekend which is a huge plus for an old guy like me that can’t go to nightclubs anymore.

Had 2 meals here recently and first one was a bit of a revelation. Best burger I've had in years and lovely home made salsa. Exceeded my expectations significantly. Went back last night and had a steak, expertly cooked, beautifully seasoned and served with real passion. This has always been one of my favourite Gloucester pubs for its music nights, but I had never appreciated the quality and value of the food on offer.

I've visited this pub every time I've been to Gloucester and it's always great. They always have a theme and sometimes they have the pub split into multiple themes. I ended my 30th birthday at Rene and they had Swampcandy performing who absolutely killed it. Thanks Rene for the good times!

Always enjoy going here. Tables spaced out and felt safe in the restaurant. Looking forward to their Festive Meal which is still fantastic value for money and IMHO the most varied and interesting in the area.

Always good a pub to chill outside in the summer with reggae. Food was ok but not as good as it used to be. Chips were a bit sparse like bottom of the pan. Major mix up with order as guy who took our order went off shift, superviser didn't follow it up. Mayo on plate was not vegan, glad I didn't touch it because they didn't understand importance of lactose intolerance despite his assurances.

While the starter's were great the main course of steak wasn't. The starter's on the evening menu are the same as you can have as a light bite at lunchtime, only our evening steak was over cooked the side salad comes with a mint dressing that is not listed on the menu. We ordered a side order of onion rings which did not appear the reason was the young person looking after the restaurant was also having to work behind the bar so was not able to pay attention to those dining in the restaurant. Could do much better

Brilliant building inside, really nice to see an old pub that still retains all its old features including a well in the middle of it. Never seen so many bottles on the walls and ceilings. Quirky pub/restaurant set in a side alley in Gloucester City centre. Characterful interior with its own well in the middle of the entrance and a room with glass bottles covering the ceiling. Great home-made burgers and the lamb curry and steak & ale pie were very acceptable.

Went in for a pint on the way home from the Food Festival to the Train Station. It is up an alley just off one of the main streets. It's an old pub and its fairly dark. The service was Excellent, good choice of ciders. The pub was clean in the main area but I am told the cleanliness of the Ladies toilet left a lot to be desired. I have eaten there previously & the food was very good. Worth a visit.

Very friendly and quirky old pub with great atmosphere and brilliant music. We had to come to Gloucester today and decided to have coffee here. We liked it there so much we ended up having lunch too! I had the creamy garlic mushrooms on ciabatta which was absolutely delicious. My partner had chicken and mayo sandwich on granary with a side of salad. He said his was really good too. We also had some Orchard Pig ginger and chilli cider which we also thought was great. All in all a brilliant place in a quiet, attractive, hidden olde wolde part of the city.

With delicious food at good value, friendly staff, and live music, Cafe Rene is offering a great mix of experiences. Surrounded by a library shelves hundreds of wine bottles, you could find yourself relaxed with a lost sense of time in a lovely manner. The only setback is probably the slow preparation of food, it takes time to cook. So if you're in a rush and don't have that much time waiting, this may not be the right place for you. Otherwise a highly recommended place.

Every time I visit my daughter I make a point of indulging in the finest sticky toffee pudding I've ever tasted. I'm from Toronto Canada and I make a point of searching out sticky toffee pudding in every little British towns like Stroud and even into Wales but by far this is the most awesome and the staff is very friendly and accommodating.. .can't wait for my next visit. A quirky pub with great staff but the smell of stale beer from the carpet was strong . The food was less than average even though the staff tried their best the two items my partner ordered were both not available, we were only told this after waiting a while for our food to arrive at the table . In fairness they did give my partner a free drink for the inconvenience.

Popped in on a whim and had food and drinks on a Saturday afternoon. The dining area was not too busy so finding a table was easy enough. Tables were clean and sufficiently well spaced apart from other tables and diners. A pint of craft ale, two half pints of orange juice and lemonade and a half of lemonade was around £8. Ordered 2 plates of chicken nuggets (no chips included), a curry and a pounder burger (with chips included). I had to buy an extra plate of chips for the nuggets.... total cost £42, so 2 adult meals and 2 kids meals - with drinks £50. We were warned the wait could be up to 45 minutes which was just about OK but a little odd considering the small number of people dining there. Staff very polite, service was good and environment clean. My craft beer wasn’t good although I drank it. This could just be the type of beer but it was a “lifeless” beer. Food arrived a little earlier than suggested and the portions were big. Plenty of freshly cooked chicken nuggets, large plate of curry and a rather monstrous looking burger. Trouble with the burger was that it was two chunky patties of meat which had been thoroughly cooked through, thus leaving them bone dry. It was a labour to get through one pattybecause it was so dry and the other patty hardly touched but this is where the complaints stop as the rest was very good. If anyone reads this from Cafe Rene, might I suggest offering the “pounder” burger as usual but placing four thinner patties and cooking them less. Cooking two half pound burgers will always make them dry.
