Reviews of The Spread Eagle
A. G.
first time coming to this pub, it was my friends birthday celebration so we went on a night out! intended on a quick spontaneous drink before hitting the clubs but ended up staying as the staff were very welcoming and accommodating despite our outfits😂 great drinks at a decent price, and they had a really talented live singer performing, who was really engaging, they even let him perform for 10 more minutes so we could dance! loved it, will definitely be backkkkk

Never been to Ipswich before? Well, if you want a good selection of beer, on tap and not, plus character beams and quiet corners (least ways in the afternoon) you've arrived at the right place. Super backyard, adorned with off-beat poetry if you're short of conversation starter, for sunny days. If you're lucky you might even catch some live spoken word.

Even before lockdown this was a favourite of mine.
Beautiful old building with bags of character. Friendly staff ready to guide you through the range of beers available. Not sure what you want, they will ask you what you like and makes ace suggestions.
Been back since Covid and one of the few places taking their responsibilities seriously. Enter via the side gate, not through the pub, straight in to the beer garden. Before entering you have to provide your details and have temperature taken, you're then shown to your table. Drinks are served via table service and bill's settled at the end.
The pub is run by Grain who are a superb brewery boardering Norfolk and Suffolk. They have a wide range of beers to suit all tastes.

Really nice place. Lovely beer garden. Proper sun trap! Nice house gin and friendly staff. Oldest pub in Ipswich. Not serving food right now due to covid and no seating indoors (covid). Great place!
D. 5.
Nice little individual pub with a few guest ales, not many on tonight but I think there is usually a few more looking at the empty pumps. Nice atmosphere and some games to hand if that takes your fancy
L. S.
Great pub to visit if you like a more traditional style pub. Serves ales as well as the usual beers, spirits etc
K. B.
Great place just no disabled friendly tho can understand for such old building
K. B.
We stumbled upon this place on a two day stop over. We liked it so much we went back on our second day! It is a lovely place to stop and catch your breath. We sat in the garden (met the friendly pub cat). Drinks are reasonably priced, served nicely and delivered to your table promptly. The friendly lady behind the bar was helpful, attentive and knew her stuff. On our second visit, we tried the cocktails 2 for £12 on Sundays, and again we weren't disappointed. They were just setting up for a poetry reading session, but sadly we didn't have time to stay. A pint of premium lager and a rhubarb and ginger gin came to less than a tenner. Both were nicely presented, especially the gin (fine slices of fresh ginger and lime included, lovely to sit and muddle whilst enjoying the sunshine). Would we go here again..... Yes, again and again.... Next time we are in Ipswich! Thank you

Excellent beer lovely pub, with outside seating.

What an awesome pub, staff are friendly with a great choice of drinks. Really enjoyed the German Lager on sale and the outside area was lovely on a sunny evening. Looking forward to a return soon 😎
I. J.
Great atmosphere, good beer. Lovely place and staff is great 🙂
J. D.
Great amount of beers on and very good pub menu
A. K.
Great selection of drinks, nice garden area, reasonably priced ☺

Lovely old, characterful pub with a lots of different gins and beers plus a nice little pub garden at the back. Love it when the Nonsuch djs play old tunes that I know (but so do most of the students!).
G. J.
Really nice atmosphere in this place. It's a quirky old building with bags of character, and the staff are so friendly and helpful. Good range of drinks available, although I was slightly disappointed that they only had one real ale on offer during my visit. I'll definitely be coming back, and highly recommend the place.
M. S.
Not much of an atmosphere, decent selection of craft beers.
R. C.
A Grain Brewery pub, so excellent real ale On the day I visited a slightly reduced range available, and prices are slightly higher than elsewhere in Ipswich, but always worth a visit
L. B.
Great historic pub, good quiz on Wednesday.
W. C.
Lovely old pub done up in a new style. Beers are delicious. Staff are absolutely fantastic.
B. R.
Lovely pub nice staff, nice atmos, good beer. Great place for lunch as well
B. K.
Had one of the burgers this evening and a pint, very good quality and service. Tasty food but unable to finish it as there's too much for me to eat.
d. c.
Love this pub since it has been taken over by new owners. A great atmosphere and a great (and different then usual pubs) selection of beers and spirits. The owners are also very passionate about the drinks they sell. The interior is also very smart and perfect for both couples and for meeting friends.
D. B.
This is a very nice pub with a good selection of craft ales. For me I would have liked some more no/low alcohol options. The lights appeared to be a bit broken too.
Why not 5 stars? I would need to go back a few more times first, but it's well worth a visit.
T. D.
What a delightful pub, and so happy to see it prospering after some dark years - the new owners have brought the light in! I recommend Tuesday nights which are entirely candlelit, evoking ages past. The beer is all (?) from Grain Brewery near Diss, and the mixed drinks are very tasty. It's a tad pricier than other local hostelries but I think it justifies itself.
J. C.
I really like this pub. Located just on the brink of town if shopping is getting too much to bare. They always have a great selection of drinks and snacks to offer, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming.
S. C.
Great service, nice ambience, good selection of wines, beers and cocktails. A regular haunt for us.
A. S.
Clean and tidy, nice beer garden, good beer brewed at own brewery. Nicely decorated old pub. Unfortunately sausage rolls come with puff pastry, should be short crust, it's the law. Or should be.
T. I.
A great pub with great service. Whenever my friends come back to Ipswich we come back here for a couple of pints.
R. V.
Great beer, good crowd, and the curried fish-burger, wow!
S. B.
Lovely ambience. Oldy style pub with modern flare and staff are great at recommendations.
C. W.
Lovely pub with friendly staff. Grain beers not my favourite but they often have top end guest beers. Good pub quiz on Wednesdays and a great beer garden.
R. C.
Nice welcoming pub. Felt like a drinkers pub more than a foodie pub but I think food available. Good selection of interesting beers, not your standard fare either. Well worth a visit.
G. G.
Great traditional pub. Lovely little beer garden for the summer months. Some interesting beers on tap and friendly staff. Thumbs up from me.
A. G.
Nice chilled out pub with reasonably priced drinks and cozy seats
C. W.
One of the best pubs in Ipswich. The beers are from Grain brewery just over the border in Norfolk and I always struggle to decide which to have because they're all so good (and cater for every taste), but there's plenty of other drinks available too - the bar seems very well stocked.
S. B.
Lovely pub. Great atmosphere and good social distancing measures in place. Really enjoyed my visit and would definitely visit again.
D. H.
Great beer. Good atmosphere. What's not to like.
Z. K.
New owners have certainly made an impression.
Great selection of beers and wine.
Friendly and professional.
Clean toilets.
Great smoking area.
Highly recommend!
M. B.
Great for quizes on a Wednesday. Staff are lovely. Menu seems to be on rotation (not the same every time I go). I think it's the oldest pub in Ipswich!
A. H.
Fabulous service yesterday evening. Safety of patrons clearly paramount and very well organised. This is a lovely old pub with a great outside space in a private courtyard. Well done to The Spready!!
C. C.
It's located in a gorgeous old building. The atmosphere is great, the ale always good, the staff friendly. Music nights are very good. It's a favourite.
P. Y.
Now a grains pub which is a local brewery only a stones throw away. Good selection of real ales available. Pleasant place to go for a drink.
P. O.
Cosy very old building but updated pub with excellent beers from Grain brewery (its their Ipswich pub) sun trap courtyard.
A. F.
Great beer, great staff, good atmosphere, regular events such as quiz nights, hygge evenings, creative evenings and local DJ’s a few times a month.
C. F.
Very nice place for a beer or coffee! Character and charm in a good location on the way either in to town from the quayside or vice versa. Lots of great food choices near by as well for a pre food drink or post food drink.
K. S.
Compact and bijoux! Beer was really good and they have board games to use when quiet. An open to all quiz on Wednesday night but not sure if it's a regular thing.
L. L.
Nice pub with a good selection of craft beers. Great courtyard garden.
H. A.
Fantastic place, really nice rustic vibe, very pleasant staff and a lovely romantic setting especially with the wood burner and thick cottage ceiling beams.
Would highly recommend The Spread Eagle to anyone visiting Ipswich who is looking for a pleasant afternoon/evening with good company.
A. R.
