Reviews of Northern Monk Refectory
D. W.
Excellent selection of beers on tap here! From some of the core range all the way to their one off brews, if you enjoy craft beer then there will be something here for you. I did the tour which was fantastic, very knowledgeable in how the brewing process goes and the history behind how they used to operate alongside some very tasty beers. Only downside is that I do not live close enough!
S. S.
Incredible place, such a great selection of drinks and always something new to try. Beautiful outdoor space in the sun and also really dog friendly. We had to try the tacos after a few pints and they were literally the best tacos in Leeds, my friend is from America and even he was impressed by the tacos here, which is saying something. Please give this place a try especially if you have a doggo.
G. W.
Been coming here for many years and it’s still a special place.
The taproom always has great beers on and the brewery visit is highly recommended.
Had some amazing beers in my most recent visits.
T.
We always stop at northern monk when in Leeds, fantastic beer selection and brilliant food available. The poutine is fantastic!
J. K.
The beer and service is amazing. So many beers. Had chips which were amazing super Crispy finished with thyme and delicate spiced. Awesome.
G. P.
Love Northern Monk and visit regularly. Good selection of non alcoholic selections. Beers are fantastic! Staff always friendly and knowledgeable. However they do need to consider disabled visitors. All parking reserved for wedding guests on our recent visit and the steps are a nightmare.

Love love love their beer, especially Little Faith. It’s my favourite local beer in the whole of Leeds. Tap room is nice, if a little out of the way. Beer garden looks great for summer and it’s dog friendly!
R. H.
Attentive and knowledgeable staff, a great range of in-house beers, collaborations and guest options. Add in their dog-friendly attitude, support for local developments and a rotating cast of wholesome food partnerships, and you've got a seriously appealing venue.
D. S.
Hands down the best brewery visit on this trip. Decent walk from the hotel across the river and down a back alley. Super clean brewery and tap room. Excellent staff and great beers. Sam and I came all 3 days on this trip to Leeds. Food was spot on. We will be back.
S. V.
Great vegan food by chow chow vegan, huge portions, tasty and freshly made. We loved the stay chickn combo bowl especially delicious 😋
N. C.
WOW, I ordered on deliveroo and dare I say that was probably the nicest burger I have ever ordered? bloody delicious- pesto chicken burger and the tribute- I would love to go in next time the place looks lovely good job guys:-)
M. “. B.
The atmosphere inside and out is always great! Super friendly staff with a great selection of home brewed and guest beers.
Always got a great choice of local street food there too.
(Covid note: don't forget to book a table as they have very limited walk in availability)
J. D.
Oh my god I could spend all day in this place. I did spend a whole afternoon here at least and it great. Next level beer selection and a great feeling to the place generally in terms of surroundings and people. I was here waiting a couple of hours for a train on a Sunday and it was the perfect environment to crack on with some projects on my laptop and enjoy some brews. I’ll be back here next time I come to Leeds almost certainly.
T. w.
Called into to try the ice cream beer, which was great.
Bought a glass too.
A cracking range of taps I could have stayed there all night. The selection would cater for any beer fans.
Update June 2019 our third visit
Our craft beer trips to Leeds always begin with a trip to the northern monk. The beers are incredible and you want a clean palate and clear head to enjoy them. Such a vast range of beers you'll want to try as many as you can. However, the beers are pretty strong so we limit ourselves.
Fairly reasonable on prices for craft beer, the decent atmosphere in a tidy lively venue.
My only disappointment is they've gone cashless. I can see from the business side of things the benefits of this. But for the wider economy, It's another nail in the coffin for cash.
S. E.
100% great place. Amazing beers, great people. 100% doggo friendly
S. P.
Short walk from Leeds train station and well worth the trip. About fifteen keg lines, a couple of cask, and a fridge full of goodies. I'm a stout/porter drinker and there was a decent choice for myself. Friendly clientele and staff. Will visit whenever passing through Leeds.
C. F.
Superb afternoon on the tour, would highly recommend, staff went out of their way to look after us,three of us thoroughly enjoyed everything, thanks
b. w.
We went specifically to try out the Sunday roast from @jah_jyot_curry and it was amazing. Our last night out for some food for at least a month and it was well worth it 😍 will be back again when we can. The venue was lovely too and all covid precautions were in place 👍
M. C.
Smaller than I expected so very pleased I went on a quiet night. Exceptional quality and variety of beers and the setting is great.
P. J. W.
Rapidly becoming one of the best brewers in the UK, the tap room is well worth the short walk from the station. Superb beers, and exquisite Thai snack food. Just go!
R. H.
Edit: been coming for a while now and things have changed a bit since after lockdown. While the staff are not rude, there is no friendliness really. The atmosphere is quite cold therefore, with no smiles or warmth, and feels very cliquey among the staff who do their own thing and seem to be the main customers. It is still child and dog friendly but the brews have increased a lot in price and I searched all winter for a decent stout to no avail - just IPA after IPA. We bought a can (IPA no surprise there) for takeaway which was £5.50 still after the discount and it was mediocre, and didn't taste of the flavours advertised at all. It's also still not wheelchair accessible, and quite out of the way from town. What was once shiny and new, full of promise and creativity, off the beaten track and with legit, tasty beer has now become quite tired, boring, gimmicky, a bit too chilled and unimpressive sadly.
P. R.
Huge choice of beers, had a delicious snack, food tasty and well cooked, quick service, staff knowledgeable and helpful.
P. W.
Venue is excellent in almost every way; class, clean, modern but with character, good atmosphere. Beer is obviously beyond reproach. Food was a bit disappointing though, good but what was supposed to be "chicken wings" was basically a posh plate of fillet strips, so slightly disappointed there.
L. H.
Pleasant surroundings with a good selection of beers that change regularly, both on tap and in cans. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Merch and food also available.
J. G.
Simply the best range of beers. Yet another Eternal Sunshine down the neck. Love them all!!
D. B.
Just a great place to come for an amazing selection of wonderful beers from lager to mind blowing stouts.
B. Y.
Brilliant from start to finish. Beer tick food tick great service tick. I even got a sneak peak in the brewery
D. S.
16 taps and 2 cask beers, mostly their own by with some guest taps. Some cans in a fridge too. Free WiFi
C. T.
Fantastic craft brew place in Leeds. Their own beers on tap are excellent with a wide variety. Also have some of them canned. Enjoyed the outdoor seating and pop up food on a sunny evening. Went back another time mid week and sat inside. The recent guest beers aren’t worth it though, regardless of the process of importing them (5+ quid for a third of a pint). Staff mostly very friendly, especially a couple of the male bartenders who took time out to explain different beers and make good recommendations. I’ve also been to the Manchester branch and found Leeds staff much more welcoming. Definitely will be back.
C. J.
Absolutely awesome place for craft beer lovers.
We thought it was a really stylish bar to visit and the Northern Monk beers are always so very, very good. Would love to visit again sometime and try more of the beers and perhaps give the food a try. The vibe was so good and the bar staff so helpful, ensuring you got the best out of your experience.
Cracking place

Great beer, Great service. Food was very nice. Steak cooked beautifully however shoestring fries are ridiculous - just because you can do something definitely doesn't mean you should! Not a fan of unisex toilets while the majority of people may manage with this arrangement it may make some feel very uncomfortable. Will definitely return great venue.
A. P.
Hats off to Ted for being a superb manager!! In all honesty we didn’t have the best first impression at Northern Monk, Leeds but after speaking to Ted he explained the situation due to Covid that there’s currently limitations to the beer selection on tap, which will be changing soon. Ted completely changed our view through his enthusiasm and passion for craft beer, we look forward to returning again. Thanks again Ted and great work with the charitable side of the business as well 🍻❤️
O. S.
Nice venue, good beer selection, the bar snacks are fab.
M. C.
Friendly place with some good craft beers. Only had time for a quick one, but looking forward to visiting again.
P. F.
Attended a Salesforce community event at Northern Monk Refectory. It was a really cool, industrial setting and would be great for weddings, parties or any other events. Close to the station and other local bars and hotels
R. S.
Great brewery tap room with yummy Thai food. Well worth the walk out of the town center
H. a.
Very nice and cosy place with high quality beers! Not too many different beers but it covers different types which makes you stay at this place for hours and try most of it. The place has got a second floor which is great for parties or even weddings. Haven’t had food here, but will be back to try that too!! Good place to go, do recommend it.
J. A.
Stylish and generally high quality, with a good pub quiz and good food. The beers are good too but emphasis on craft keg made with u.s hops makes certain beers generic in style and without any local heritage in the face of it. Staff are a mixed bag with some outgoing and friendly, others cold and sulky even during slow periods in the afternoon. The bar makes a good effort to ask for feedback and engages with the community well.
D. D.
This has to be one of the best craft beer establishments I have visited in the last few years. Great location, great premises, and a fantastic range of high quality, tasty, hop-tastic beers. I now look forward to leaving London and visiting Leeds, knowing I will be spending an hour or two at this marvellous establishment. I recommend a visit, as I know you will not be disappointed.
c. c.
Wish I had found this place sooner. Didn't have the food, but had enough time to try two of their tasty beverages. Since I didn't really know what they make, I had a knowledgeable guide (my bartender) to lead me in the direction of my taste buds. And might I say, she was good and so was the other staff working there. Great atmosphere, tasty beverages and perfect tunes to go with the place. Like I said, wish I found this place sooner. Will be back for sure!
M. P.
Lovely atmosphere, excellent beer, music is much improved since my last review, and they have now opened their kitchen to a rotating sequence of some of Leeds's best eateries who took over the food side of the business. They've also created a lovely beer garden which is arguably the nicest place in Leeds to drink in the sun.
C. B.
Lovely pint, great service, good range of beers. I'll be back again to sample the brewery tour.
M. M.
This place is superb. The beer is excellent, with a really great selection. The food we had (loaded fries & tacos) were so good. If the sun is shining this is one of the top venues South Leeds has to offer.
R. W.
This place is fantastic. We came on a lovely sunny day and made the most of the outdoor seating area. One of the best breweries in the UK currently serving up awesome vegan Mexican food! Delicious.
m. b.
A recent first trip with group of 7. The atmosphere was friendly, the beer great and the current food menu (Thai) simple and very nice. Definitely a return venue.
Easy to walk to from town/University
An unusual one is the gender neutral toilets.. perfectly fine tbh
C. M.
Fantastic beer and fantastic food with the best background music. The staff are lovely such a shame I've only just discovered this wonderful place. I will be back after lockdown.
N. A.
Very nice atmosphere and great beer selection. Rosie was super nice and extremely helpful with our orders! Thank you :)
S. R.
Had a corporate event here for about 25 people altogether.
The building is great, full of character and its great how you can see where they make the beer through a window as you walk in.
The food - Doner Summer, everyone loved it! One person didn’t even realise it was vegan even though we'd told them!!
Two downsides, for us the biggest being the lack of parking, we had guests coming from all over the UK, most of them driving, so it was a little embarrassing that we couldn’t use the half empty carpark next to the building. (might be worth Northern Monk organising some permits for their guests) The second issue was I felt a lack of urgency sometimes from the staff. But apart from that, it was great!!
H. M.
An absolute no brainer must visit for beer enthusiasts, or just anyone looking for a cool spot and happy to try something new. Kitchens usually superb. Family and dog friendly. Staff are exceptional too 😉
R. D.
Nice atmosphere, great drinks and friendly staff
N. M.
Well organised in the new world with table service and very friendly staff
C. R.
Great selection of craft beers for different tastes
C. A.
We went for a breakfast on Saturday morning. Nice place, though the service took a while to bring our food. There were only 2 other tables eating than us and the food took 40 minutes.
Mrs ordered corned beef hash and I had poached egg of crumpets. Both very nice and I'd definitely return.
w. t.
Always crazy for Northern Monk so been there for enjoying the real taste as well as atmosphere. Cool place, great service, nice staff n great atmosphere. Made my visit from London to enjoy few drinks with friends.
Just wondering why they not try to open a bar in London so no mean to travel too far to enjoy the real stuff. Think about it please.
Made my visit again after exactly 2 years. Nothing changed. Everything is same as I left. Great service b great people with great stuff.
Some people never compromise on quality n Northern Monk is one of them. Going to make it 5 stars from 4. Thanks to all workers who working behind that brewery 👍
T. B.
Visited here for a beer festival. The building is lovely - an impressive, restored warehouse over three floors. Northern Monk beer is very good and I would like to revisit their tap room without a beer fest to try their tap room.
S. D.
Visited the brewery this evening for an exhibition that was held for holbeck elderly aid. The building has its own historic background and can be seen through the decor, however it is very trendy and has a good vibe throughout. Only down side is that parking is very limited but is just a short walk from the city centre. Would definitely recommend a visit if your looking for somewhere new to explore.
L. S.
Great place (for beer lovers), Friday imperial stout was my favourite, all the staff were very helpful.
D. D.
So far, most amazing local crafted beers in Leeds! So much flavours in a glass!
A. B.
Really happy with the choice of Beer and the great Quiz night on a Tuesday evening. Sometimes service can be slow if arriving on a Friday after work and Ice can also be sporadic. Ambiance also exactly what you would expect from a decent bar above a brewery - Industrial chic.
O. N.
Nice place, interesting location and friendly staff. The drinks were nice and not over priced. Perfect for social or work meets. Could have a bigger menu and remember a jumper it's freezing!
m. s.
Good beer and great food in the sun. Need to book ahead though. Gets super busy.
S. H.
Amazing range of quality beers, many brewed in the building, which is a lovely renovated mill. Comms to the kitchen are dodgy, but the food is sometimes brill when it eventually comes... Overall I love this place.
J. F.
Gorgeous old building, take a peak at the brewery on the first floor as you ascend to the bar on the second floor. Warm and cozy bar, good for working. Grub and grog do excellent food. Chapter hall on the third floor for events or party's.
R. M.
Love the industrial looking tap room, great beers and always good pop up food bars. Some great session beers and some naughty strong stouts.
B. H.
Excellent beers. Food smelled amazing but didn't try (yet)
A. T.
Spiritual testing ground. Much enjoyment. Gated exit to Marshall Road (Street?) proves frustrating and embarrassing. The rest 👌
A. H.
Lovely place great atmosphere friendly staff
A. R.
The panko breaded chicken burger was amazing! I have already arranged two more evenings here after going for the first time 30 minutes ago
H. C.
Fantastic. Covid-secure without feeling sterile and unwelcoming. This was our second visit in a week. Love the staff, beer and food. Thank you.
R. W.
Great beer. Private function room is a beautiful space. Lack of a lift made it a little difficult for access for some members of the party.
C. P.
FANTASTIC VIBE! THEY HAVE PING PONG/ TABLE TENIS!!!!
I loved the decor and the exhibitions that they have there!
But the prices are way too high for me...
the overall experience was amazing, the prices are a bit of a problem for me
P.
Amazing beer and a great bar.
J. W.
Excellent food, friendly staff. The beer itself is tasty but could use something. Great place to hangout.
M. C.
Great craft beer. Highly recommended 😃
M. A.
Industrial, slightly minimalist bar area. Good selection of beers and always source interesting food. My only criticism would be that it's a little small.
P.
Fantastic brews and always something different. It's well worth the walk and the extra expense for the quality beer and atmosphere.
L. G.
Best brewery in the UK... Maybe even the world! Love it here. Quality tap room and great atmosphere.
S. T.
Excellent venue and a good selection of drinks. Breweries of this kind make a great change from city pubs.

Great place with friendly staff where to sit down and enjoy your favourite Northern Monk beers.

Great beer but dubious food. Didn't believe in such a thing as bad arancini until I had one at northern monk...
T. D.
Great beer, atmosphere and staff... And they do cans to take-out!
E.
Knew that the beer would be spot on but the food was excellent as were the staff.
J. B.
Top notch tap room with some of the best beer in Leeds

Great - get there early - be prepared to wait for table and food - food is worth the wait - 1/2 a pancake is enough though -

First visit since the weekend before lockdown. Great to be back...
D. G.
Great beers, great location, but incredibly cold, rude and unfriendly staff each time I've gone in.
K. D.
(Translated) This brewery is somewhat hidden in an industrial area. Informative tour with slightly too large groups, making it difficult to follow the speaker. Afterwards there is the possibility to taste a number of different beers in the pub on the second floor. Modern brewery that lacks the nostalgia of many other small breweries.
(Original)
