Reviews of Butcher & Beast
E. L.
Just had Sunday lunch.
Table was ready at booked time slot and service was very good. I had the roast beef and Mrs had roast leg of lamb.
We plumped for the medium/regular portion, which we felt was of a very generous size, so much so we couldn't manage a pud.
Very quick service and well cooked meat and vegetables.
Thoroughly enjoyable Sunday lunch.
I would definitely recommend based on our experience.
U. B.
Had several good drinks here, the guy behind the bar was very friendly and helpful.
Had a Sunday lunch here and it was the best by far, the only criticism was that none of the staff returned to ask if everything was okay with the meals.
There wasn't, but the staff should always do this.
I would return as we enjoyed it here.
J. M.
Consistently excellent Sunday lunches! Been a couple of times now and the food is always spot on. And they have dog friendly areas too, which is another bonus.
A. R.
Just had the best Sunday lunch in a long long time for me it's the first time in ages since I have came out and been well stuffed Brilliant and we'll worth the money again if you can please pop in for a meal I no you want be disappointed. Looking forward to our next visit
G. R.
Not local to the area but welcomed like we'd been many times before. Asked our server about dairy free options due to allergy, the chef came out to speak to us to ask some questions and to tell us what she could do (best service I've had anywhere with regards to this) made changes to my chosen dish to make it dairy free which was excellent. Sirloin steak was amazing. Staff really friendly and helpful- nothing was too much trouble. Social distancing guidelines managed well.
Just want to say a special thanks to the chef for taking extra time to come speak to me about my allergy. Thank you
C. W.
I bloody love this place. I brought my parents here for lunch today as they were up visiting me and I knew we'd get excellent food and service. We all opted for the Grimsby Haddock and chips with mushy peas and they were magnificent! The fish was enormous and I ended up only having a handful of the lovely chips as a result, but it was so tasty - as if we were having fish and chips at the seaside. The staff as always were very friendly and the service was perfect. I hadn't been in the garden before but it is a lovely little suntrap and we enjoyed it immensely. This pub is also very dog friendly and having 3 dogs along with us was no problem at all. I would recommend this place wholeheartedly to anyone looking for some lovely grub in a friendly environment.
R. W.
Attentive and friendly staff, beautiful setting and tasty pub food, good selection of beers and lagers. Will be back again
G. F.
Homely pub food. Don't expect airs and graces but an honest menu and tasty food. Nine of us were accommodated in the conservatory, and we were served quickly. Food was generally good - the steak pie is highly recommended, the burger much less so. Any grumbles were dealt with quickly and happily. Food is on the pricey side.
Parking is limited so be aware.

Bear with the process. Ignore the facade and greasy spoon vibe. The best pies ever eaten were had here! Lovely staff, great beer too
S. T.
Just left Butcher & Beast and can't give them enough credit for excellent food, if you a pudding fan like me try the sticky toffee pud it's absolutely gorgeous and really generous portions. All the staff were extremely through and friendly, will certainly be returning when in the area.
M. D.
Very nice food, friendly staff. Sat in the bar area to eat as no one else in the restaurant, so better atmosphere. However there was a very loud, small barking dog! It is a dog friendly pub so......
C. W.
We decided to stop here for lunch, glad we did! Lovely staff, good drinks, food was amazing! Thank you.
S. G.
Really friendly pub, great atmosphere and relaxing outside area. Well worth a visit
M. C.
Lovely warm welcome. Staff here are attentive and friendly. Sunday lunch here is good with a quick service. The nut roast is actually really tasty and not dry at all. The lamb roast is plenty too with good vegetables.
C. R.
Really fine village pub with good selection of ales and lagers. Staff friendly and helpful! Worth a visit.
L. A.
Absolutely wonderful food and fantastic table service would definitely recommend great home cooked food cooked fresh to order
S. B.
Always a lovely time, great food, really welcoming and excellent value 😁
E.
Wonderfulness in a pint glass. Great hosts. Excellent food. Just a fantastic place. Recommended.
j. G.
Had a lunch out at the butcher and beast today. Food was excellent, Steak was absolutely lovely, cooked perfectly. Daughter had the Thai cod and prawn fishcakes which she really enjoyed, not something we have seen before on a menu, home cooked food at its best. We also had nachos with pulled pork to start and crispy prawns which were also excellent. Will thoroughly recommend the whole experience. Lovely village gem.
T.
The feel of a friendly local pub with a great drinks selection and very good food. Staff were super friendly and the chocolate fudge cake was “the best I’ve ever had” according to my other half! Lovely beer garden too 👌🏻
J. M.
8 of us went for Sunday roast dinner. Beautiful meal and lovely puds! Staff are very friendly and helpful!
J. W.
Fantastic pub.
Friendly staff great selection of beers and good food. Have to go again.
G. P.
This is a nice cosy, friendly village pub with a bit of history behind it. There's a pleasant beer garden, fire in the hearth in the winter, and a colourful flower display on summer (though that hasn't peaked yet this year). The food is good, the staff is friendly and efficient. It's the sort of place where you can go alone without feeling intimidated, take an elderly relative without worry or just go for a decent pint with friends and enjoy yourself.
T. N.
Six of us had a meal last night and it was just beautiful food. Best meal out I've had in a long time. Home made chips too...fabulous.
Staff were lovely too. Will definitely be back soon. 👌🙂
K. A.
Visited the Butcher and Beast today with my family having just moved to the village. We had Sunday lunch and one member of our party was able to choose a vegetarian option from the menu. I chose the large Sunday lunch which I admit was huge! I definitely will be ordering a medium next time. The food was absolutely delishious as recommended by my other nurse friends. We were very happy with the service too. All safety covid measures in place. Veronica who served us was a beautiful woman who made us feel very welcome. Thanks Von. We will definitely be visiting again soon. Xx
B. B.
Very welcoming and pleasant staff, and delicious food. Cannot fault it.
S. K.
Lovely Sunday Roast! Love being able to pick a size as well.
d. s.
We just popped to the Butcher and Beast for a couple of afternoon drinks and loved the little garden at the back of the pub. The staff were also very friendly and helpful and and the drinks reasonably priced. A lovely little village pub.
C. B.
Excellent food. Great service. Enjoyed Apricot and Stilton chicken something a little different to the normal menu you get. Nice set up for eating in a separate space to the pub.
j. m.
Decent choice of real ale taps. Considerable selection of gin too.
M. C.
This is how you run a country pub...
Food - top drawer
Staff - smart, polite and friendly
Bar - incredibly well stocked
Decor - clean, comfortable and a lovely place
What a fantastic place this is, seriously... Pure countryside pub perfection.
A. G.
Great food, very tasty and a well kept beer with a nice cosy atmosphere. Definitely be going again.
D. S.
Lovely place, staff very welcoming! A bit pricey, almost £8.00 for a coffee and coke. Lovely garden, great menu selection too!
S. B.
This is one of the best local pubs I’ve ever been to. It’s small but full of character, with open log fire, shelves full of books, incredible staff and a real cosy atmosphere. If you’re looking for somewhere to escape then this is your place! The prices are great and the range of drinks extensive too, particularly if you like gin. No wonder it features so often in the ‘best pub’ guide books on the bookshelf, because it’s a real gem.
J. D.
Very covid free environment and we felt very safe. Staff friendly and helpful. Lunch time
snack menu limited for me as baguettes are to filling. Normal sliced bread sandwiches were not available. Shame!! However, the menu for a cooked meal was very appetising. The garden environment was cosy and we spent a lovely time there in the sunshine.
n. p.
I visited on 6th February for lunch and had the homemade burger. It was absolutely delicious! Full of flavour. I was a little late arriving and the kitchen had just closed but they still accommodated us. Polite staff and great service. Fantastic choice of drinks and a landlord who is very enthusiastic and passionate about what he serves. Great pub and will definitely visit again.
c. p.
Really lovely lunch here today with family. Felt relaxed after not going out for a meal in 10months. Staff very friendly, lots of hand sanitiser around and social distancing.
M. R.
Lovely Christmas meal out with quiz team. Very good value for money, plenty of food and polite helpful staff.
J. L.
The food was fabulous, as was the service, we were a party of 6 all had the traditional Sunday roast, the portions were huge, there are 3 sizes to choose from, my nephew had a large and couldn't finish it. Excellent quality of beef very lean and cooked to perfection, the veg was fresh and perfectly cooked. Fantastic value for money 6 meals, 4 desserts 10 soft drinks £88. Loads of room tables are layed out so you have lots of personal space. My only criticism the soft drinks were expensive. Definitely recommend the butcher and beast for all.
M. B.
Lovely pub fabulous staff nice food and very large portions. Loved the way they made a fuss over the granddaughter and very dog friendly
A. M.
Dropped in here randomly on a Wednesday evening and very glad that we did. Had a lovely pint and decided to stay for food. The food was excellent, my wife had the Grimsby fish whilst I went for the burger. All excellent and good value for money as well 👍.
I. B.
Had a fantastic meal here, which was excellent value too. Bar staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. No problem with having dogs in the bar area. Beer was wonderful, I would definitely go again.
M. W.
Delightful little village pub. Food was very nice and staff friendly. MiL, wife and I enjoyed the visit.
M. W.
Exceptional local pub offering a wide selection of drinks including an impressive selection of gins and whiskies as well as superb home cooking.
During lockdown Mal and Diane have offered a takeaway service which we've used very frequently. The Beastie burger, fish and chips and any of the wonderful pies are particular favourites but everything on the menu, whether eat in or take out, has always been excellent.
When permitted to open in between lockdowns everything has been set up and organised in the most covid secure way possible while still ensuring a warm welcome and fantastic service.
I honestly can't recommend The Butcher and Beast enough and look forward to a cold pint in the beer garden, a beautiful, home cooked meal in the restaurant and maybe even an occasional win in the Thursday night quiz!
G. P.
We and our two friends have had our first lunch out today after lockdown
the beer garden setting perfect , our food was very tasty and plenty of it . the staff were wonderful , see you soon for a repeat visit
E.
I came here for a bite to eat after a busy day out in Lincoln I have to say I'm absolutely thrilled with the service I have received here. The food was absolutely beautiful and every staff member was really happy to help and I'm so so so pleased with everything. I cannot express how glad I am to have come across this pub on Google.
Your food is really nicely done and you can tell that every detail is home made. Really im over the moon.
C. R.
Found by chance, food menu
at lunch time was not varied but what we had was excellent. Friendly staff and great food . Price was reasonable .
N. W.
The whole family (and I include the fantastic staff in this) put their heart and soul into running this place and it shows. This old, stone-built pub has quite rightly become increasingly popular as its reputation has been steadily built up since Mal and Diane took over the tenancy ten years ago.
Mal runs the cellar exceptionally well, putting his lifetime in the trade to good use. The regular selection of three or four Bateman’s real ales is complemented by a regularly changing guest list. Lager drinkers will normally find a couple of choices of premium lagers like Vedett and Peroni on tap. Gin lovers are well-catered for with a huge selection of premium gins and tonics. There is also good selection of quality rums and whiskies.
Diane shines behind the scenes, running the kitchen and restaurant and making it look effortless. She produces a wide selection of pub grub staples to a consistently high standard. Her home-made steak and ale pie is to die for, as is the ham hock and leek pie. The Penang curry is superb - you can have it either vegetarian, or choose to add chicken or prawns. My own personal favourite is the Beastie Burger. I spend a lot of time in the States - land of the burger. I’ve stopped eating them there, as they can’t hold a candle to Diane’s Beastie.
The pub has a welcoming atmosphere, with an open fire providing warmth in winter, and the thick stone walls keeping you cool in summer. Locals and staff alike are friendly and chatty, but please don’t enter with the attitude that the customer is always right, or that your children can behave as they like. Fools are not suffered gladly and if you’re silly enough to treat anyone with disrespect, you’ll probably leave feeling aggrieved, with the overwhelming urge to write an undeserved negative review. Rather than potentially damaging their hard-won reputation, staff and regulars would much prefer it if you just didn’t come back. There are plenty of people for whom the place is perfect.
The team have worked extremely hard during the COVID outbreak to make the place as safe as possible for customers inside and out. The beer garden is now almost entirely covered over, and all tables have a very effective overhead infra red heater to keep the chill off. They have introduced a takeaway service during lockdown, and I urge everyone to use this as much as possible to support them and help them keep their heads afloat during these difficult times.
C. V.
Beautiful place, gorgeous food and very clean! Lovely friendly staff and couldn't do enough for our party of over 20. We had all pre-ordered our food and the service was fast and efficient. Would definitely recommend.
R. M.
Wasn't as good as expected, lacking in vegetables but not shy with the chips! The food was mediocre which was a shame. Please note we went for the fillet steak mentioned on the menu online, sadly they only had one on the menu which was Sirloin so don't go by the online menu. I also asked for chicken added to one of my dishes, they refused which I found odd as they offer it as an extra with the curry. Staff were friendly enough.
D. G.
Had a lovely meal, can recommend the rump steak, cooked to perfection and very tasty. The staff were very attentive. The only draw back was we were in the lovely restaurant sat near the window and it was a little chilly. Would definitely be visiting again.
d. b.
The pub is so well organised with strict adherence to current precautions. It was still very cheerful and welcoming with great service and a good selection of beers. Really enjoyed our visit
S.
This was our first visit to the Butcher and Beast. We received a very warm welcome from the chap behind the bar who took time to recommend various beers to my husband. The interior of the pub is charming with plenty of seating and a very pleasant garden/patio area and also dog friendly which is a bonus. Our lunch was delicious and we finished the lot - which doesn't often happen! We'll definitely be visiting again soon.
P. L.
Nice food and staff. Lovely little pub.
A. N.
Staff lovely. Just dropped on on the off chance. Couldn't do enough for us. Had Penang curry, it was really nice. Love this pub. X
L.
Just enjoyed a fantastic meal here. The food was excellent possibly the best fruit crumble I have ever tried, the staff were terrific and the atmosphere wonderful. If your in the area I would definitely recommend you eat here. 👍👍👍👍
S. S.
Great three course dinner in the dog-friendly bar. Excellent pub fare, with friendly and efficient service. Only reason for marking it down on this occasion was because they'd run out of Bateman's XXXB, otherwise it would have been a "5".
R. H.
Great beer, good food.
J. W.
Beer garden is lovely, would visit again
J. N.
It's a treck (1.6 miles) from the moorings on the Witham, but it's well worth it.
Right next door is a Spar convenience store, which while pricey, is great - the butcher in there is amazing!
The pub has several good beers, we didn't do food, but the price and menu seemed good and people rave about it.
The beer garden is a gem!
£4.50 for a pint, in this type of gorgeous isn't as bad as it sounds!
D. M.
Excellent a well deserved compliment. Warm friendly service for our short notice cycle groups beer stop.
A. E.
Great food, pie was incredible. Staff was great as well, lovely building. A bit of quiet music in the dining area would of made it even better

Went there last Saturday evening for a two course meal. Usually faced with a mushroom risotto or bean burger I was delighted to see they had introduced a new fully vegetarian menu (with a good selection of vegan dishes too) the food, service, and beer we're all superb. We'll be back again soon.
S. w.

s.
Enjoyed our meal. Friendly helpful staff. Difficult to get wheelchair to loo. Thanks for a lovely meal
s. a.
It's not bad but it's rather expensive. I ordered the sirloin steak and it was gristly. The meal wasn't good enough quality for the price asked for it.
L. T.
Went here for a Saturday night feed. Bit of a mixed bag - the starters we had were a bit of a let down but the main courses were really good.

Just had dinner tonight and it was AMAZING. We were over the moon with the food. If you like a good portion of good, tasty, hearty food then I recommend this place. My dad had the beef stir fry and loved the fact it had so much beef in, it came in sizzling and turned everyone’s heads!! Service was excellent, we will be back again.
