Reviews of Doctor Duncan's
R. D.
A stunning classic vintage Liverpool pub. A great selection of beer in a listed bar. Entering the tile room is like going back in time. Due to its out of the way position it's always quiet. It has just been renovated but not spoiled. A must visit if you like beer and history.
A. M.
Advertised locally as a real ale pub. However, only two ales on at the time. Food is simple but nice, and good value. However, worth visiting just to view the fantastic interior.
A. S.
Love this pub. It's just like stepping back in time. So glad that they have preserved all of the tiling etc. A little gem.
J. P.
Excellent staff who are very polite, friendly and professional. Very good food. Very well kept beers and the pub is exceptionally clean. Would definitely recommend a visit.
S. B.
Great pub, good choice of Ales & spirits, great music, friendly staff but the food let it down, ordered a cheese & ham ciabatta & my 1st and last Scouse. Afrer an hour they came cold & sent back. Re-heated & brought back to us!! What a shame
A. A.
Lovely atmosphere nice staff apart from one female who cannot smile to customers but can chase staff around. Beer tasty too
J. O.
Delightful pub with beautiful tilework throughout. Great selection of beers - Plum Porter highly recommended. Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere.
S. S.
Cute pub with some very impressive period features.
Skip the bar area and straight to the tiled lounge. Makes you wonder how they clean it all?!
Nice chairs that go with the decor so really makes you feel like a Victorian/Edwardian
N. H.
Loved it, great pints from Neptune brewery and loved the history of the place.
M. S.
Nice old traditional venue with tons of character. Great choice of drinks and serves food. Staff are friendly. Lots of seating to watch the football.
J. L.
Very nice building, helpful staff and good beers but let down by poor food which was over cooked and too greasy for me.
H. Y.
Nice array of rooms with a variety of seating can accommodate both those who like an armchair and larger groups. Helpful bar staff and the food menu involved pie. The Erdinger was at London prices but I don't think anything else was.
J. J.
Lovely pub .good atmosphere always busy friendly staff .another must if visiting liverpool
D. B.
One of My favourite pub visits in Liverpool. Such an interesting pub, loads of artefacts really good and sky sports
T. S. Y. L.
Had a few cheeky drinks in here before the match on 2nd January and thoroughly enjoyed it. 5*.
A. W.
Nice proper pub with a good selection of well kept ales
I. W.
Decent city pub with a good selection of beers on tap and some interesting artefacts relating to Dr Duncan.
D. H.
Nice pub, but limited choice of good and ale.
C. O.
Staff were friendly & helpful. Dr. Duncan was an important figure in the historical hygiene of the city of Liverpool.
p. D.
Always a good warm welcome and a good atmosphere great pub.
A. N.
Really cosy pub, situated minutes away from Lime Street station and Queens Square. Always a few decent beers on tap and the ornately tiled lounge area is really impressive.
W. B.
After match pint meeting friends before getting the train home, pub chocker
G. M.
Food was brilliant. Recommend the all day breakfast.
A. B.
Nice pub not too far from St John's. Staff really friendly and decent prices for beer.
E. G.
A really good pub with excellent beers, comfortable armchairs, an open fire and no music .
g. t.
Fantastic tiled interior. Nice backdrop to a pint or two.
D. M. A.
Great range of beers and drinks, never fails to offer a great atmosphere and lively experience. A must go to venue when in Liverpool.
S. C.
Nice pub in city city centre love the old feel to the place friendly staff £4.00 amstell plug sockets and WiFi available food available as well toilets clean only 2 problems are no TV or pool table and toilets downstairs but enjoy coming here
A. M.
Popped in just once at the end of a visit to Liverpool. It was recommended by one of the open top bus tours as a nice pub, with good real ales and less 'manic' than pubs in the centre of town (by the Cavern, etc). They were right. Had a very nice pint and not too overpriced.
Nice place, too, not a 'spit and sawdust' type local pub.
D. G.
Fantastic place a cathedral of pubs. Great staff well worth a visit.
C. C.
Love the character and history of this pub. Great architectural features, nice cosy spaces around the place. Not as much atmosphere as you'd expect or maybe we haven't come at right time/day.
ע. נ.
Really felt at home. Nice beers as well and in good price.
C. B.
Excellent retreat for a reasonably priced meal, real ale and a real fire. Independently owned so worth seeking out and supporting in these troubled times.
S. M.
Well known old boozer full of history and style. Friendly attentive staff and good choice of drinks.
B. B.
Good historic pub with period decor and fittings, very popular during the daytime and early evenings.
Great selection of world wide beers available as well as the more usual ones.
Food is available, they seem to gravitate around pie and mash, which to be honest looked great.
The pub, furnishings and toilet facilities were very clean.
Must go again
J. A.
Lovely little traditional pub. Great selection of beers and beautiful decoration and insides. Well worth a visit, even just to see the interiors.
Food is also pretty awesome: standard pub food but worthwhile if you're peckish.
J. R.
They don't come much more traditional than Doctor Duncan's. The building may be old but the people in it are what makes the place vibrant.
6 of us enjoyed a meal and several bottles of wine on a Saturday night. The staff were delightful and the food and ambience was spot on.
S. N.
Friendly staff and a great range of beers. The pub even has a private room that you can book, making it a great location for groups to visit and for special occasions. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Liverpool :)
R. A.
I have to say "I love this place". I seem to always gravitate here when I visit Liverpool. The atmosphere is tranquil and the Pub food is good. Very good. I have been to more than my share of pubs where the food is pathetic. Here the food is great; it takes a little while to come from the kitchen, but well worth it. See photo of food. The pub it's self has such character. The rooms are also worth a look.
B. F.
One of the best pubs in Liverpool
You will always have a great welcome and the clientele are very friendly and great with the banter and jokes.
The Beer is kept well and a good choice of gins for the gin lovers.
If you get a window seat brilliant view over the garden at the back of St georges Hall.
Beutifull tiled room in the back.
I love the place
K. G.
Lovely place to meet up, excellent choice of beers, lagers and real ales all spirits and good food. Quite a big pub inside and a lovely vibe. Suitable for all age groups. We all met in here prior to attending a wedding in st George's hall. Well recommended
V. C.
Nice traditional style pub with original features, decorated with interesting historic memorabilia. Guy who served us behind the bar was very friendly. £9.95 for a pie and pint was a great deal, especially for the centre of Liverpool, but I was a bit disappointed that the only lager in the deal was Carlsberg considering all the other more unique beers on offer (would have been happy to upgrade to one of these for a small fee). Great selection of pies and very tasty. Hot drinks machine was out of order on our visit which was a little disappointing, and mushy peas were a little undercooked.
F. K.
One of Liverpool's many well-worth-visiting city centre pubs with a sense of history. Decent real ale, not the cheapest in town - though not the dearest I've come across. The food looks good but I've not tried it.
It's never been quite the same since the closure of local brewery Cain's, which used to run Dr D's. Its crowning glory remains, however: the tiled 'third room' with fireplace, as pleasant a spot as there is in town to sup a while. I'm still not sure about the large comfy armchairs they put in a while ago. Stylish, but they cut down considerably on the space available.
D. M.
Great bar with a selection of cask ales.
Old Victorian pub that must have cost a fortune when built. It could do with some money spending on it as the chairs need repairing etc but good place. Recommended.
M. U.
Friendly staff
Great views and handy if attending the museum's close by.
Great dedication to a historic figure and what he did for humanity.
Only had a drink and dessert so not really able to comment on the food.
A. D. H.
This place is a gem. They sell real ales and food is served upto 7.30pm during the week. It's a cosy, character pub with plenty of seating choices depending on your mood and group size. I chose the German Weissbier which is a real winner. The tropical IPA is well worth a try. The food is good too, try the three starters/tapas menu for £12.
A. A.
Nice comfortable pub. Visited for a second time, and enjoyed it again. Didn't have food, although the menu looked nice. Lovely pub in an old apothecary shop. Worth a visit, the staff were lovely.
J. C.
Quaint little pub just up from Lime Street station. Reasonably priced food, range of ales and drinks to suit all tastes on tap and interesting architecture/features in each section of the building. Well worth a visit.
D. S.
One of the most expensive pints in the city center , and food nice but not plentiful... still a nice pub though ..
K. M.
Unbelievable 1st time visit.. nice place warm and Friendly Shropshire gold on great form will be back
J. K.
Greate old pub in city centre
K. L.
Doctor Duncan's is cheap and cheerful. The building is gorgeous with old Victorian architecture and decor in a great location.
It can feel quite cramped depending on where you sit, and it does fill up quickly. Arrive very early if you'd like a seat.
T. J.
Great range of real ales and good food. The intricately tiled walls are wonderful in this historic building. Worth a visit just to look around. Close to the theatres, museums and galleries and town centre but enough on periphery not to be too crowded.
C. W.
Had the Cod and chips. Pretty good. The staff are good. They have sufficient knowledge to do the job and had a cheerful attitude. I have been in once a month for some time now (a regular committee meeting) with similar experiences.
n. T.
A day at the races and spending probably too much time drinking made this pub absolutely perfect, great real ales and service was fabulous, Lady behind the bar even recommended Liverpool uni for my daughter, just a fabulous place that made my day. Will definitely be going up for a weekend and popping in again. Even met Scully..just brilliant
D. B.
Good beer, good food, stunning architecture.
D. C.
Highly rated real ale pub in the city centre. Very handy location when going to the Empire, Playhouse or Royal Court theatres.
Good, well kept selection of ales, real and otherwise. The food menu features a range of Pie Minister offerings, typical pub grub burgers, panini's and fish and chips. Also on offer is good homemade Scouse.
Prices are reasonable, it's well frequented and a has a nice atmosphere.
H. C.
We came here on our 1st day in Liverpool a lovely cosy pub where you can feel safe with social distancing and every where was clean so we kept coming back here where you could relax and lady behind bar was lovely making sure track and trace was in place......WELL DONE 👏 Xxx
J. G.
As said, great staff, food atmosphere. Great selection of drinks, very reasonable, centre of Liverpool. Right next to the Marriott hotel, will definitely return.
D. R.
Doctor Duncan's is one of Liverpool's best kept secrets, especially with the way the city has changed around it. It's another old building with high vaulted ceilings and ornate decor. I have heard people say on a number of occasions it's the last thing they expected in Liverpool. The pub is split into a number of distinct areas so you have the bar, restaurant , a cosy corner and a chilled area. It always has a really nice feel about the place and it seems to attract a more mature crowd. The menu is not as extensive as some places but the food quality is excellent and worth the premium price. It gets a whole star for having Scouse on the menu. The only negative - and only because I have dodgy knees - is the toilets are in the cellar down a narrow staircase.
j. t.
Lovely decor, in fact outstanding. Quiet and understated. Not deserving of 5 stars as beer choices on night we visited were somewhat uninspiring - black sheep, marstons etc.
M. K.
Great old pub with a good range of beers and a nice ambience.
Green Drinks meet here on the first Thursday of the month from 1800 i.e. 6pm, not the start of the 19th century...
B. P. W.
lived in Liverpool for 12 months, spent half my time at that pub. Great people, good banter and good beer too. I live in Adelaide, Australia and think about good times at Doctor Duncans. I would recommend visiting the pub for a pint.
A. M.
Good location close to Lime Street. Decent beers at reasonable prices for the city centre. Generally enough tables to grab a seat.
D. R.
Proper nice pub with great staff ,beers and seating but can get busy because of the above well worth it
S. T.
Good food, good beer, lovely place, excellent staff. 'Nuff said :-)
P. L.
Guiness was gorgeous but had to send food back as gone cold. They really need to work on their food service as fantastic pub otherwise.
Z. E.

E. S.

C. W.
Truly a unique place, the tile room is the perfect location to sit back in a comfy chair with a beer and watch the world go by.
