Reviews of 40 Maltby Street

Iconic bermondsey deli and restaurant.
They have the best sandwiches here if you go at lunchtime.
First time went for dinner and the quality is 10/10. Awesome organic wine selection.
Very friendly staff ❤️
M. T.
Cozy atmosphere, dogs friendly. Wine selections is really nice, all tapas is wonderful, goes well with wine.
Also staff are very kind.

We had an enjoyable time here - the food and the staff were all lovely. I really liked the open kitchen concept. However, we felt that some of the food were rather heavy - especially the mains, which we felt had too much stuff going on (but perhaps it's because we aren't that used to modern British food). Although i must say, the wine was amazing.
Note: we came here in end February

Having wanted to try this place for a while I was very excited to finally come here.
First and foremost the staff were awesome, we were guided through the incredible wine menu, full of so many surprises and treats.
It was a set menu, an absolute joy to be given plates of perfectly considered food.
The mussels in white wine sauce were some of the meatiest I’ve had, the only downside was that I needed more bread for the sauce.
Following on from that was the roast beef and lightly pickled girolles. The parsley butter singing on top. So much fun.
It was a great eating out experience, especially if you combine the staffs knowledge of their extensive wine list.
P. B.
Absolutely incredible take away sandwiches available at lunch time. The Ham with Pea croquette was especially delicious. Cherry and almond tart was superb too.

The wine bar - 40 maltby street (not the market) is one of my favourite place in the world! They cook with their heart with fresh ingredients! And the wine is exceptional! You may think it’s expensive but it’s worth every single penny! Their menu changes all the time depending the seasonal ingredients. Great vibe and friendly staff along side the tasty food and delicious wine!
G. B.
Accidently went here (I googled Russian restaurants on Maps and this came up, it's not Russian!). Delicious food - the onion tart is delicious as is the leak fritters! Very reasonably priced for the quality, nice selection of wines though only one beer (but it is nice!). The staff were really friendly and attentive and the location has excellent design and atmosphere. You can't ask for more, a delicious surprise.

As you cannot reserve, waiting outside wasn't a great start though the great wine selection helped to shorten the wait. We ordered a cheese plate with the wine and were underwhelmed with three small pieces of cheese for £9. Had we made a mistake to come here? All other dishes we had were also somewhat expensive for their size but the taste was incredible and all was forgiven. The food was also quite creative. We were for example impressed with the smoked mackerel rösti with horseradish. For our next visit we'll bring hats and warm coats.
T. M.
Unfortunately can’t say much about the dine in experience as I have only ordered take away. That’s a new normal nowadays...😞
Anyway still I wanted to give a feedback and hands up to these guys.
Menu changing on weekly basis with a large selection. I like the innovative option and dishes they offered. You can feel they are definitely trying you to get genuine « restaurant experience » here not just making regular dish for the sake of it.
So I had brawn, leek fritter, pickles & mustard (£8) genius combination, good portion. Liked it very much. Picture shows only half !
And staff are very nice !
Keep it up, guys ! Will definitely come back and I encourage people to do the same !

My london favorit ! Simply the best! Excellent as always! The best wine bar/kitchen in London! Excellent "natural" wine selection . Outstanding on every side : The kitchen is always humbly magnifying carefully sourced seasonal ingredients to their very best, add to it the warmth and genuinely passionate service to guide you through the complex natural wine world. Perfect for the clueless to the wine experts!
E. L.
One of my favorite places for small plates with wine. Short menu, but seriously good quality food, great selection of wine including a few good ones by the glass. Staff are really friendly, unpretentious, and the atmosphere is great. The bread and country ham were incredible.
J. S.
Really nice selection of wines, the food was also great, and there were a good amount of dairy free options. Definitely hoping to go back again soon!
M. N.
Solid wine bar with very good food. We love to swing by here with the dog, for wine and ham before the kitchen opens. Sunday menu was a bit less enticing.
S. B.
Without doubt my favourite restaurant in London, the food is incredible, staff are lovely, wine delicious and the menu changes every week so you can keep going back again and again. Photos do not do the food justice!
T. E.
The service was excellent! The food was delicious! I just wish I wasn't limited to the three-course prix-fixe menu, but to be fair, we were made aware of this when we made our reservation. This restaurant is in a fantastic location.
C. A. W.
Had the cauliflower chickpea sandwich from their takeaway menu and it was absolutely delicious - just the bread alone tasted really good!
m.
Food was tasty and flavourful. Dishes had fresh ingredients and were the right portions to share. This is the kind of place that is just relaxed and down to earth where you can feel comfortable even though it is always crowded because it is so good. Great wine selection and unique ambiance. Will definitely go back.
A. “.
Quite a nice place for trying out different wine. Food is good too. But they don’t take reservation so may have to wait for a while to get a table.
O. Y.
Fans of the natural wine movement MUST visit this incredible little spot. A great selection of wine and a stellar kitchen; we had multiple orders of the haddock croquettes because they were just too good. Service team is really knowledgable too and offered good recommendations and descriptions of their wine. What a gem.
A. C.
Delicious food, impressive selection of natural wine, friendly and attentive service.
Lovely to have this place at our doorstep. I’ll have to come more often!
Also nice to see that staff are still wearing masks.
A. O.
Favourite place south of the river. Amazing food, great friendly staff, always great selection of interesting natural wines both by the glass and from the long bottle list.
D. H.
Great olace with amazing selection of natural wines. Really good food. And nice prices!
c.
We came here on a Sunday and loved it. It had the advantage of being out of the cold, but for some strange reason, it was also quiet there. The food that is served on the stalls outside in Maltby Street is great, but so is the food here. It certainly is worth coming to eat in the warm and on a stool. I think that we will be returning the next time we are in the area.
V. R.
Great food and amazing wine with super chill and friendly atmosphere.
C. D.
One of my favorite restaurants in London. The staff is very friendly and their dishes are very well thought. The quality of their ingredients is always high and the dishes are very flavourful. They also have a nice selection of French and Italian wines and also provide some well selected varieties from other parts of the world. Keep up the good work - you're doing an amazing job!
h. l.
Wine, food and service was great. Chilled intimate place to catch up with friends and have some good food.
N. N.
I love 40 Maltby Street. One of our favourite wine bars in London. Great atmosphere, very attentive staff who are very knowledgeable about the wines and really moreish, unpretentious, quality food.
R. B.
After recently moving to the area we have been searching for good places to eat and drink and boy was this a discovery. I read a review by Jay Raynor online and knew I had to get there asap. We went on a Friday evening and it was absolutely packed, we managed to find space at the bar for two people and wasn't really sure what to expect. We told the bar tender we hadn't been before and he was extremely helpful, he talked us through the wine and food and then said we eat wherever we order. We were stood at the bar but only intended on getting a couple of small plates so it was perfect. He said we could sit down if a table became available but we were fine at the bar! It was such a good atmosphere, everyone was thoroughly enjoying the food and drink having a great time.
The bar tender suggested a couple of starters from the menu, I had the white cabbage and shrimp which was one of the simplest, yummy dishes I have tasted. And all very good value too! He suggested wine to go with our food choices and then we were all set.
The kitchen is very small and open for all to see, 2 chefs working extremely hard! I loved being able to see!
GO THERE.
M. C.
Some of the yummiest and most creative sandwiches you can find, but not exactly appropriate for eating standing up (as one does these days!). Today's sandwich was tenderstem broccoli and split peas .... which is basically a soup and a side dish placed in a sandwich. The only thing I could think of as more difficult to eat standing up would be a turmeric beetroot dahl sandwich....
F. K.
Food is sublime, service amazing. Love the wine. My favourite restaurant in London.
A. A.
Great food and lovely natural wine list. Love being able to take away natural wines at a reasonable price too. I enjoy how casual the whole place is, ordering at the counter and no reservations i think allows it to remain very relaxed. However this does mean it not perhaps best suited for everyone but I love it.
J. C.
One of the nicest experiences of eating out that I've had in recent months. Tucked away in a sexy little street, not far from London Bridge, this place is a gem.
40 Maltby Street, based on appearances, might make you think that this place is all about the wine. The wine plays a big part, and there's a fantastic list to choose from, but the food is what actually brought me here.
Food choices are shown on one board next to the bar, where all food and drink orders should be placed. Staff greet you like little rays of sunshine, and are very happy to chat through your options.
The menu is seasonal, and changes daily. I could tell you all about the beautiful salsify fritters, the little pie, or the partridge that I had, but the chances are that kitchen will have other wondrous treats for you when you go. Most plates are small, but the two or three larger options keep the small-plate haters happy too.
This really is a top place to spend a couple of hours, chugging away or a bottle and ordering food when peckish. Frustratingly for us diners, a couple of food critics have given glowing reviews in the national press in the last few days, so getting a space here, especially with a no reservations policy, will be tricky for a while. The staff here deserve the attention and success this brings though, even if the secret is most definitely out.
D. M.
Fantastic spot. Friendly staff, delicious wines and great food all in a really nice setting with a good buzz
H. F.
Super top quality spot for natural wines and superb small plates. Bottles are priced separately for in or take away. Always a nice by the glass selection . Order at the bar. No reservations. Can be really nice and quiet during the week. I haven't been on a weekend in a long time, but I imagine it's crowded.
C.
London's best kept secret. Yeah, they serve incredible wines, but check out the blackboard by the door. Once you've tried their dishes you won't eat anywhere else. Exemplary cooking at a reasonable price. I'm almost there every week.
D. B.
Wonderful neighborhood restaurant serving small plates. The limited menu always delights and can be enjoyed in its entirety by 3 or 4 people. The staff know the wine list extensively and many bottles are available to taste.
Avoid on Saturday's as the Maltby street market crowd dominate.
V. C.
This is one of my favourite restaurants in London. It reminds me of the hip industrial style restaurants in Melbourne. It has a seasonal changing food menu, designed to share. The wine is organic and the owner assists in finding wine that suits your taste and the food that you’ve chosen. It does not take reservations but I’ve never had to wait for a table. If you have to wait, ask for directions to the nearby cocktail bar that’s in a close tube entrance.
K. N.
Always a great atmosphere here. A perfect destination for a date or to catch up with friends. The food solidly delivers every time - serving seasonal ingredients with a new menu every day written on the chalkboard. Choose 3-4 between you and see how you get on, you can always order more from the bar as you go. Definitely get the ham and ask the bar staff what they're pouring, they are knowledgable about wine and will be able to steer you
N. H.
Great wine and food! The courgette with ragu was unreal and the selection of cheeses were really fantastic. Friendly staff, good set up and I like the fact you can hear/feel the trains passing above. All in all, a great experience.
I. S.
I visited this place with a fiend on a Wednesday night and really liked this chilled wine bar.
The service was very good. The barman was very pleasant and helpful with suggestions on food and wine. They do have a pretty impressive list of wines to choose from ;) The food menu changes every week.
Loved the interior design of this place: brick, wood, wine bottles, dimmed lights.
Fun Latino music was played on the background that night. I will definitely come again.
M. G.
I've been many times to 40 Maltby Street, having worked just across the road from it. Initially, we went for the wine but when we finally decided to try the food and were blown away.
It's not a fancy place, but excellent for foodies and people who like their wine. I'd really recommend giving it a try.
W. H.
Hidden under the arches on the ever growing Maltby street, this small "pop up" place to eat has got more and more popular. Food remains great and the wine has never failed to fit the occasion. Menu constantly changes so go with an open mind and an expectation to enjoy whatever is being cooked for you!
R. B.
Fantastic wine bar in Southeast London, run in the front end of a wine porter.
Food is sourced from the wholesalers that occupy the arches next door, and changes regularly with the season. Chefs hail from Moro and other excellent London restaurants. A wonderful way to spend a Friday night or Saturday afternoon.
L. S. (.
One of the best street markets I've visited in London.
It's on the small side, but the quality of food and beverages just seems high. It's a lot less intense than the likes of Borough market and they also have a superb shop that sells retro gorgeous little bits.
I tried Spinach and Feta Fougasse at Comptoir Gourmand and it was good-o.
Little Bird Gin is also a very nice drinking den. Strong G&Ts.
m. b.
Great food, good wines and amazing service. The food quality is extremely high, so delicious and all by one chef and a sous chef in a very small open kitchen. I loved watching them all evening.
N. D.
A small and charming market in the heart of the city. Plenty of quirky little stalls and spaces selling some amazing food produce.
The micro-breweries dotted about and the tap houses were a fantastic bonus.
Come down and see what modern and traditional London is all about.
R. G.
I really don't want the world to find out this place!! Please don't this ;) Its London's weekend PRECIOUS!!
Now what can I say! its as good as it gets, at least to the point of a high quality food, great crowd (most of them are there to eat or drink something for a change ;) and marketeers who are genuinely passionate about what they are selling.
You can buy here, smoked Nordic style salmon, Corn fed yummy Iberico to 7 days aged and cooked to a family recipe Salt beef!! Not forgetting the gay farmers precious and tasty oil ;) to Micro-brewery of London Gin and beers .. I am almost always high from the food and drinks every time I leave this place.. sometimes I just can't help myself and go back on Sunday to finish off with couple of mini-muffin like sweet (not a muffin I promise far more tastier); reminds me of Portugal for some reason from the bakery in the corner.
If someone is disappointed coming here, what can I say... "its not the market, its YOU" :)
One last word : its people who are passionate about what they do , so not made in "china" or a "supermarket bakery" or "all-bar-non" brewing ..so expect to pay a tiny-tad more than you normal would ..this is the price of authenticity! For a strange reason, the market people actually communicate with you..WHAT in LONDON!! YES!
PS: thank you my fellow City Expert for recommending this place to me!!
D. M. V. N.
Very nice food and great atmosphere. My favorite tapas resto in Bermonsey.
The perfect combination of wine selection and amazing food ... make sure to bring some friends and have a great time on this venues under the train tracks.
S. K.
Hidden gem tucked away between a railway line and a appartment complex amongst the arches. This place is really good for bakery and sweet products especially. Though they also have outlets that have meaty sandwich feasts. The french bakery there also has lots of savory pastries served hot. There is plenty of indoor space when the weather isn't that good - it always gets busy. Most of the stuff is sold out by lunchtime so get there a bit earlier.
Y. C.
Can't fault this place. One of our local favourites for both lunch & dinner, if you can get in for dinner - well worth it.
M. H.
Came here to get food before doing the Bermondsey Beer Mile and was highly impressed. The smells here are incredible and all the food looks amazing. Will definitely come back again. Only criticism is that there isn't a lot of space to sit, or even stand, to eat food so you have to be creative if you pick something messy!
A. B.
I love this place. Great seasonal plates of food. Good wine. How they make such incredible food from such a small kitchen is beyond me. I will be going back again, and again, and again...
T. G.
Maltby Street Market is a smaller, more intimate, less touristy version of Borough Market. Delicious food and drinks and a great atmosphere. Only bring as much cash as you're willing to spend, though - you'll go through it fast!
K. C.
Exceptional selection, amazing food. Really enjoyed knowledgeable staffs who would stop by and chat about the wine. could do with more outside seating / perching area maybe?
D. M.
Haven't been to Maltby St for a while. Miss St John Cafe which is now a vermouth bar. Biggest change is extending the stalls past Ropewalk north to Tanner St ... Adds maybe 12 more stalls. At the other end of the market (Stanworth St) Southwark council is enforcing the law and among others Jensen Gin is no longer allowed to have tables outside. Enjoyed a glass of red and rillettes on toast at 40 Maltby St which was surprisingly quiet. All in all Maltby St remains a good weekend visit for locals and tourists.
F. J.
Great little market with awesome street food. Doesn't have the borough market crowds but also not quite as rich of a selection.
Definitely worth checking out and only a short walk from Borough.
A. L.
Maltby Street Market is one of these place you can only find in London.
The street is lined with Antique and wood shop, but during the week ends, those are invested by a very lively market.
A few tables might be installed underneath a collection of old faucets and you'll have burgers with wine while admiring the rest of the antique collection.
Two of the highlights are the cheese shop which has a huge variety of French cheese, and the salmon stall, which makes truly delicious smoked salmon toast.
E.
Creative food with good twists! Reasonable pricing.
O. K.
Maltby street is fantastic place! There s all the sstreet food rom London markets on cheeper prices with a very underground fun atmosphere. The bar is also an antique furniture shop. There is more to explore than mouthwatering dishes!
S. G.
Lovely staff, amazing food and brilliant wine recommendations. Please come here and support beautiful restaurants like this!
B. C.
Really nice spot with a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. The pumpkin fritters were excellent, and we got great recommendations for wine.
G. I.
Luvli delish food and wine
D. A.
One of my favourite markets in London, Maltby Street is a food lovers heaven, more of an upperclass street food market with gin shops galore, duck waffles, oysters and fine wines. The market now on both saturdays and sundays is best enjoyed on a saturday early in the morning so you can get your hands on a St John's Bakery Doughnut, they sell out quick and trust me they are worth getting up early for. It has become increasingly busy over the past year so queues for stalls can get pretty big. Make sure you get a glass of wine from the gentleman in the top hat, he's a great character and knows his stuff.
E. H.
Lovely service, interesting ever-changing selection of wines and delicious food. Highly recommend this place. Expect a little wait to nab a table or go early.
S. H.
A charming vintner and wine bar with a tiny kitchen turning out tantalising small dishes; this place is a cramped joy!
They don't take bookings, but this is legitimate rather than lazy, because there's so little room in this single 19th Century railway arch cluttered with stools and perches.
The lack of proper seating is a drawback, but if you can find a space to settle you're in for a wonderful session.
Most, if not all, of the wine here is organic/biodynamic and the broadly British fayre presents a simple but delightful accompaniment.
While the Southeastern trains thunder above your head, spare a thought for the extraordinary structure you're sitting within: just one of the 851 arches that have carried millions between Greenwich and London Bridge since 1836.
Note: several other reviews on here are erroneously for the market that sets up outside.
R. F.
Pretty much all traders in Maltby Street are at the top of their game and this is no exception. Fantastic selection of wine and staff pretty happy to share a secret bargain with you. Food is always changing and inspiring.
M. G.
Great experience, I asked for a red wine and I was suggested a very good one. I also had some cheese, it was various in the flavour and tasty. Recommended place.
S. M.
Nice place with the best Brussels sprouts salad and the roasted cauliflower. The staff were really kind and kept coming for help and to provide some suggestions.
C. S.
Really, what is all the fuss about? Loads of attitude, crowded, but not much of a sense of joy in what is truly nice food. If you've been to Borough Market a hundred times and want a change, maybe, but this seemed as much about the hype and the cool factor as about the food.
K. L.
Maltby Street Market - less busy than Borough Market, its bigger and better known brother, but in my opinion, much better food and atmosphere. Highly recommended for street food (get there early for the salt beef bagels), cakes and coffee
H. S. Q.
Love everything about this place! Some of the best food and wine in London and the guys who run it are charming. Only open Wednesday to Saturday so check before visiting.
W. E. T.
Chiming in with the rest here, but a visit to this charming street market is a must-do! More or less hidden away from those who frequent Borough Market, I found the vendors friendly and welcoming, hawking high quality fare no less.
M. H.
Absolutely cozy, eclectic wine bar serving organic wines, excellent cheeses, in a locals type ambiance. Service is nice, hands off, just right for us!
D. F.
I went purposely to Maltby Market and it was just to try and eat at Monty’s Deli. I had heard a lot about this place and though the market is small I saw a few cool stalls along the way that had smoked salmon, some African food and St John’s doughnuts.
C.
If you are getting bored of the Borough market, Maltby street might just be what you are looking for! The market is open on Saturday morning, so if you arrive late, a lot of stores will be closed. Having said that, if you are a morning bird, you can get pretty good coffee and breakfast there.
G. C.
Just amazing! Been coming here for years and it’s easily my favourite restaurant in London
J.
Wonderful selection of off-the-beaten path wines, with a menu of beautiful, freshly cooked small plates to soak them up. Great vibe.
R. K.
Wonderfully unique restaurant, well known for the wine offerings, but also come for the food. Great for a date! Beware, seating is a little uncomfortable
R. A.
Such a cozy spot with outdoor seating.
T. C.
Undoutably one of Londons best markets. Browse the many vintage furniture stores as you enjoy the fine selection of food and drinks available from street food vendors and the restaurants and bakeries along the railway line.
A. J.
Hidden gem ! Go in before 18:00 and you might be able to find a spot. The food churned out from the postage stamp sized kitchen speaks for itself. No reservations or fixed menus !
F. P.
one of the best food experience market in London, full of people and different street (and not street) food. Also in the outskirts of the street there are other interesting food corners.
S. H.
I came here on a recommendation and can honestly say it was a great experience-the food was sublime and the wines delicious-I live in the area and will make this a regular haunt.
M. R.
Deliciously sensitive food and great wine to pair up with. Staff make you feel like you are a friend coming in for a bite.
S. P.
Nice selection of artisan shops and wines. Lovely street to walk.
A.
Everything on the menu here is great. Cool place with a great drinks menu and food you cannot go wrong with.
W. S.
After 30 some years living in London, this is my favourite restaurant. Great wine, great plates.
K. v. d. L.
Delicious, unusual wine (had my first experience of Slovenian orange wine) and knowledgeable, passionate staff.
F. T.
Nice and helpful, with a wide selection. Unfortunately, not that many options if you're going per glass, which is a shame. With only two people it limits what you could try.
Y. Q.
Favourite wine bar in London!
C.
A banging restaurant with incredible wine and atmosphere
K. J.
Everything everyone says about this place is true. Excellent service, excellent wines and excellent food. Cannot go wrong!
L. Y.
A divine yet simple hidden gem. Small tapas style dishes that each pack a punch, and a regularly changing menu.

Small, quaint restaurant with a fantastic food and wine menu. One of my fiancé’s favourite places in London

Amazing inventive and delcious gastropub style food - tapas style. Delicious organic wines too!

Great, varied selection of wines you will never see anywhere else
A. G.
Cosy atmosphere
Relaxed service

A bit annoying the fact that you have to go to the bar and order
Small portions

Great little Street market, much less busy than Borough Market but still aim to get there before about 1pm before either get too busy.

40 Maltby Street is incredible and I can't recommend it enough. We were first blown away when we visited in 2019 and the quality has never dropped. The menu and wines are always changing but are always delicious and the service is perfect. The stand out this week was definitely the purple sprouting broccoli with a lemon pickle. They don't take bookings, so arrive early to avoid disappointment. The lunchtime takeaway sandwiches Wed-Fri are awesome, they also change weekly and I've included images of last week's.
