Reviews of Bull & Gate
M. A.
This pub is really really beautiful. Man, it's like a place out of a movie. They have vegan roast, Wich was quite okay. They have more than one option and other vegan and veggie foods.
E. S.
Walked in on a quite midweek afternoon. The service was friendly and they had some gluten free options too which was great. The decor is nice and over all the pub as a nice atmosphere.
The food however was sub par. The sausages did not snap as you cut into them and the fries that came with the burger tasted old. Good pub for a drink but I will not recommend it for a meal.
It's located close to the Kentish town station which is nice and there are lots of other stores in the area.

The Boulogne Bar, upstairs at the Bull & Gate, proved to be the perfect location for my birthday party. There's plenty of space and comfortable seating and tables, it feels like a classy lounge. There's air con and the windows open, which was important to us in these covid/ventilation times. The venue's music system was made available to us and the hot buffet food we ordered was exactly what was required. But the best thing were the attentive staff of the Bull & Gate who were available to help with any last-minute requests.

Easily the best pub quiz I have ever been to, not just the normal round after round of questions. Fun activities included a paper plane contest and a drawing competition of the perfect birthday party. Atmosphere was great, food yummy, beer tasty. Who could ask for more?
A. G.
Had a gorgeous vegan roast there last weekend with my partner. Service was great and the food was delicious. Will be returning asap :)

We got married on the 29th of December at Bull & Gate and in short it was fantastic! Joe, Stephen and the rest of the team were just the best. The weeks and days before the event were full of uncertainty and Joe always reassured us and offered solutions that put us at ease. Finally we were able to go ahead with the wedding and Joe and the team worked with all the changes that kept coming and ensured that Jay and I had one of the most magical days of our lives. We were ready to just settle for "let's get it done" but they made sure everything possible that could be done was done and it was just perfect! It is such a beautiful pub and the people that work there make it even more wonderful. The food was excellent and every dietary need was catered for - great job chef. A massive, heartfelt thank you from the bottom of our hearts for working tirelessly to ensure we had such a magical day that will be with us, and our guests, forever. Bull & Gate is a jewel in the crown of Kentish Town.

Amazing, friendly staff. Lovely, welcoming feel to the pub. Love that it covered my disability needs, my friend could bring her puppy and my friend who is a vegan was catered for. Would definitely go again.

Visited on Sunday. Really liked the venue and ambience. We travelled here for the Sunday Roast. Meat and choice of sides was good, but the food was cold and the gravy was poor (too thin, no taste). Sorry, but you did for a review! Wine and beer was good and puddings tasty.

Very nicely furnished and a warm welcome. The staff are great and extremely accommodating, putting on the Scotland game for me when I asked. Good range of drinks and food looked good when coming out. If you're in Kentish Town for a gig at the O2 Forum then definitely visit here first.
T. C.
Beautiful pub, great selection of drinks, cool vibe. Haven't tried the menu yet, but will definitely be back!

Nice pub with very cosy atmosphere. Staff was friendly and helpful. Good selection of beers. Food is great albeit a bit pricy. Very clean loos as well which is nice for a change.

Went to this pub after a show at the o2 kentish town Forum(Ashnikko) and was brilliant. I got served instantly at the bar and found a table with other people who had been to the show. Will definitely be going again, this pub is perfect for a after gig pint.
J. H.
Very mixed experience. Bar staff were super friendly and the food was delicious. Experience was very let down by two things.
1. our table was by the door and it was FREEZING so my 86 year old grandma had to sit in her hat and scarf.
2. I asked to add stuffing to my vegan roast and no warning was given that it was meat stuffing. I took a bite when it arrived and let the lady who was waiting our table know that I think this is meat and I don't eat meat. I was not upset or angry, just let her know. Rather than apologise or be polite in any way, her response was 'well stuffing is meat' and tried to make me feel stupid. Maybe I am stupid but I have eaten stuffing a lot and it is often vegetarian.. I felt embarrassed and belittled by her so won't be returning.

Amazing food, warm atmosphere, nice pub Deco and excellent customer service. I highly recommend this pub and will defo go back again. If you go on Sunday there is a superb selection of roasts
N. H.
A large and spacious pub, will an eccentric decor. Well maintained the pub has a great atmosphere and projection. The food however was a slight disappointment. My chicken and chorizo pie has an un crisped top, and my partners mash was under seasoned.
V. P.
Very Very Busy, but that's what you get when you have a great venue with lovely food, will come again
J. D.
Bit draughty in January. Young's beer could be served better (One Tun is a better pint). Food ok, nice chips.
M. K.
What a delightful lunch we had in this beautiful Victorian pub so close to the Kentish Town tube station. We both had veggie mains, but there were plenty of options for everyone. Staff were incredibly friendly, asked if we had any food intolerances and checked to be sure that we were happy with our food soon after it arrived (always a good sign).
I had a veggie burger which was sandwiched in between two large mushrooms accompanied by home fries. Both our dishes were flavourful and delicious. We just managed to have space to indulge in a wonderful slice of cheesecake with a passion fruit coulis for pudding. Their new chef, Fabian, is making quite an impression here. We look forward to returning again soon to see what other delights he has added to the menu.
M. A.
Cute & cosy pub!Friendly stuff & great chips! Perfect place for catching up with friends!
M. M.
Brought a friend from America here yesterday to let her experience a true British Sunday roast, there were 3 of us and we had the sharing roast which was incredible, and great value for money. Fantastic staff who bent over backwards to provide exactly what we asked for and lovely to see the clear effort from staff to make sure guests feel comfortable and safe during their visit. Highly recommend, never fails to impress me when i stop by!
M. E.
We came here for the Sunday roast and got the big bull roast, which was incredible! It arrived piled up on a huge platter with 3 meats all the trimmings (and then some!) and 3 extra surprises that came with the main roasts (ours were beef brisket with an onion ring, pork ribs and a chicken croquette). We were stuffed by the end and very very satisfied with our order. It also came with 2 jugs of different delicious gravies and 2 giant Yorkshire’s, which we were told we could request more of if we wanted to. Overall a great experience, kind and attentive staff and nice decor. Would definitely return, especially for Sunday roast!
J. J.
We had an amazing time and the staff, Tom and Buse, went out of their way to let us have a great big table of 8 when we had not even booked!! My meal was EXCEPTIONAL, polenta and tofu with grilled veg - totally delicious!! Can’t wait to go again !!!

UPDATE - my 7th visit.
September 2021
No longer required to login or register. Nor required to purchase the "substantial meal with alcohol". A Boris idea consisting of a scotch egg.
So, once again,it becomes a pleasant pub where one can sit and enjoy comfort, snacks and copious (or miniscule - whatever floats your ice cube) of booze.
Their spirits with mixers glasses are more than ample and will hold 2 shots of gin, a good slathering of ice and almost a whole bottle of tonic. (The little mixer size bottles - not the litres)
Chunky chips with wild garlic mayo (aoli to everyone else) are just delish and help soak up the 2nd portion of G & T now sloshing around inside the inner lady or gentleman.
Staff are delightful. Mid to late 20's at a guess. Cheerful, sober and ready to make ones stay pleasant.
Airy (but not cold) high ceilings and comfortable chairs, armchairs and sofas in which one can slouch.
TV providing some sports Chanel or other but not blaring such that one can easily converse about covert affairs or hum the praises of cheese and goats.
Menu looks small but may be pronounced "select" by owners.
Chef dresses as a chef and proves his/her confidence by having a semi open kitchen in the dining area.
Sadly both cash and salted almonds are not required or available. This is put down to covid. Apparently the almonds became allergic to the 50p piece. It was bound to happen.
2years ago - summer.
It's so nice, in summer, to sit outside and have a large, ice filled glass with Hendricks & tonic.... watching the world go by.
A place to cool down, have a pleasant drink (they have a varied and extensive choice). Quench the alcoholic or non-alcoholic thirst and chill.
The equivalent of a relaxing Thai massage in a glass (or three).
Sumptuous, comfortable seating, a high ceiling and courteous staff.
The British custom of a pub was (originally) the extension of the "sitting room". A place to unwind and chat with friends and acquaintances.
Thank goodness the bull & gate continues to facilitate this experience.
July 2009
Spent a very comfortable, relaxed early Saturday afternoon here.
I adore their huge glasses for a decent slurp of a Hendricks with tonic.
My sister had the house Chardonnay. She likes Chardonnay. She has a nose for Chardonnay and was happy to snorkel her way through a few glasses.
It was really nice to see families with infants and one very happy crawler - all relaxed, patient, smiling and tasting.
Spacious, airy and laid back. High ceilings. But not cold.
Interesting history dating back to mid 19th century. Some very nice prints (or copies thereof) of all around the local area.
Very pleasant, happy staff. One new staff member was unsure and asked her supervisor. Commendable. If you don't know - it doesn't hurt to ask.
Beer on a par with local prices. Menu looks interesting. Did think about snacking on one of my visits but the kitchen had (reasonably) closed (it was 3.30) to prepare for evening service.
Tried the upstairs cocktail bar. Young man was knowledgeable even with the "older" preparations. Gave me a taste of one of his own inventions which was Brazilian style. Similar to a caipirinha but less sugar.
Much smaller area with velvet seating. A bit like cinemas.
Could be very good for entertaining a close friend. Or someone you would like to become a close friend.
Lacks a star coz I haven't tried the food yet.

Landlady was lovely. Handled drunk polish wally brilliantly. I watched Mate play upstairs in this venue which was excellent. 100% will return.
D. C.
Best pub roast I’ve had in a while! Had the beef which was banging and the roasties were on point. Stick toff pud for dessert.
A. G.
My wild mushroom aranchini and celeriac soup was divine! Thank you B&G fabulous team, will definitely come back again soon
M. J.
The quality of food and service here is truly first class. The staff are clearly so keen to help and make sure you’re happy. I happened to see the guy behind the bar, not knowing I was watching, very carefully wiping the top of a freshly poured pint of Guinness so there was none running down the side. Food is fresh and expertly prepared, specials board had an amazing pork chop with loads of crackling.
s. a.
Visited on 1/3/2020 with friends. What a lovely place. The food was lovely and well prepared; staff polite and had nice/pleasant customer service skills. Overall a great first visit. Will definitely visit again!

Brilliant night at Bull & Gate! The team were so accomodating, food was delicious and the bar upstairs is honestly the perfect Bday location. .
B. C.
Sunday pub roast at B&G is consistently delicious and served with warmth and friendliness. This time we tried the whole lamb shoulder which serves 3-4, and it served 4 of us and a bit more. Others in the 10 strong table had pork belly and beef - but I was too busy with the lamb to look at the other meals. Meat was tender and came off the bone easily. Came with parsnips, carrots, cabbage, roasties and gravy. Washed down with a Bloody Mary and the afternoon flew by.
Waitress recommended the chocolate tart which was phenomenal but my personal favorite was the crumble and custard.
Service was fast and excellent even though it was a busy afternoon with many tables occupied.
M. b.
Never dissapointed by this place. Food is freshly prepared & cooked, always high quality and great for the money. Lovely decor, great service. Wish we had a good pub like this nearby to us!
E. T.
Fantastic vegeterian Sunday roast! Great atmosphere takes you down to history while you enjoy your meal. Walk around a little, definitely check the second floor!
m.
Wonderful place and very delicious dishes! Thanks to chef Franky for the amazing chicken mushroom pie👌
M. R.
Great place for a drink, and cosy restaurant for a dinner.Third time here, and this time , unfortunately, our food was cold, and not high quality ingredients.Overpriced for what we ate.
H. S.
Stylish pub with classic pub food. Very spacious with lots of tables. Friendly service.
L. H.
Went with my partner for the vegan Sunday roast -- which also came with vegan Yorkshire puddings! Service was great and staff were super friendly and communicative, and the pub felt very safe and in line with social distancing guidelines. The food itself was incredible - the best roast I've had in a very long time! Prices very reasonable given the quality, and I'll definitely be back to experience more of the menu! We cycled from East London, and it was well worth the journey there and back!
M. J.
Had a great time here recently, sampling all the amazing craft brews on tap and tasting a selection of the food. Really friendly staff and in a great location. A good place to have dinner and drinks before an event at the O2 Forum nearby.
C. N.
What a fantastic Sunday lunch, the staff were amazing and accommodating. Two members of our party just commented, in passing that the beef was not as hot as they'd like it, even though they were enjoying the rest of the food. The plates were changed without question, better to enjoy everything came the response from the lovely team.
No problem taking in my very well behaved pooch, water and treats for him too. Reasonably priced and a lovely atmosphere. If I was to mention anything it would be the Yorkshire puddings although they looked amazing they were a little too light for me, I am from Yorkshire though so I think I'll allow myself that opinion 😊 😉 😄
Thanks again we'll be back.
J. D.
A beautiful pub with a great menu, friendly staff and cosy little corners to while away an afternoon
S. J.
My partner and I held our wedding reception here and it was absolutely amazing! We had a whole room upstairs to ourselves. Joe, Harrison and the team were extremely friendly and helpful in arranging everything we needed with such short notice and gave us a beautiful venue with excellent food! Everyone loved the place and the food as well. Even with social distancing rules the team managed to accommodate the room to feel like we were all together as a group. Could not have asked for a better place to host it. Outstanding service!
J. M.
Quality night with great food and amazing company 🙂
P. H.
Good beer selection. Excellent grilled prawns and their berry crumble with clotted cream was very good. Fantastic service from Stephen and the rest of the crew.
We’ll be back soon. We hear the Sunday roasts come with unlimited Yorkshire puddings!
M. H.
Best cozy Pub in London!
Great beers at the bar downstairs, delicious food in the restaurant in the back and an amazingly cozy atmosphere and cocktail bar upstairs, with fireplaces and leather couches.
D. B.
Food was outstanding! We all had the roasts on Sunday. I had the pork belly, just insane flavours on your plate. I also tried the chicken, really well seasoned and really filling. I had a taste of the veggie roast, it was a weird texture, similar to a sausage, but full of flavour and not meat. Didn't try any of the puddings as they had all run out. They sell beavertown!!
M. R.
Excellent quiz. Fantastic questions and wonderful quizmaster.
I just wish I got more questions right :(
N. W.
Used to watch bands here years ago, now it’s a firmly gentrified gastro pub (kind of place Giles Coren would go to). Lovely interior, food and staff. Quite an experience walking into the cavernous interior.
K. A.
Beautiful old pub with charm and character. The vegetarian roast was surprisingly good (first I had tried!)
R.
Went to the bull and gate on Wednesday to take advantage of the eat out to help out and the food was amazing! Had the soy tofu which was to die for. The service was great, our waiter was really attentive and the pub has a great beer selection. Will definitely be back very soon :)
A. T.
Beautiful pub, great cocktails, open fires, perfect!
J. P.
Nice environment but ridiculously overpriced. £6.45 for a pint, when it’s £5.20 over the road. Won’t bother coming back.
F. B.
Great quiz every other Wednesday! fun rounds and lovely staff.
L. M. D.
Really good vegetarian Sunday Roast option, lovely service and decor in the dining room, board games and cozy atmosphere. MASSIVE Yorkshire puddings!
M. B.
One of our favourite pubs, excellent food and the most friendly staff. Go for the burger, it’s a house staple. Also the specials look delicious although I never tried them. Overall it’s highly recommended 👍🏻
G. T.
Probably the best roast we have ever had, lovely place and staff! Great selection of beers
T. A.
Watched a quality band.. loved the buzz inside the Bull and Gate. It has a lovely feeling inside..🙂
E. T.
Great pub with a fantastic range of beers. Friendly staff.
B. D.
The ambiance and service was great but the food needs vast improvement
C. M.
Excellent, dog friendly pub. We love the fortnightly pub quiz (though we've never won 😭
M.
Their food and beers are on point, especially their fries/thick cut chips with truffle oil.. perfectly crispy and delicious. Cocktails I would stay away from though. I tried their makers mark sour and it was not great to drink.
L.
We booked in for a much needed Sunday roast this weekend. Sadly the food was cold and the gravy watery (I’m from ‘up north’ so this is unforgivable); we mentioned this to our waitress but didn’t want to fuss as we’d waited for over an hour, were hungry and this was out first meal out in ages.
B. W.
This is a good pub. Yes, we all know that it's a chain, complete with ersatz Victorian feel. But it's one of the best at what it does. Lovely dining room with quality gastropub food, served by professional but friendly and human staff. You want to use it as a boozer? It does that too, with a surprisingly good range of beers in a comfy but unpretentious pub with corners and sofas to sit in and talk rubbish with your friends. Oh, and there's a decent cocktail bar upstairs, with a grand piano, leather sofas and members' bar feel. This pub does it all, and I'm proud to have it.
K. M.
Bit expensive but nice friendly pub
m. t.
Food isn't its best thing even though the veggie burger was good.
M. B.
This is a spacious, lovely old pub with a fascinating history behind it. Friendly, helpful staff; decent wine selection. (The Having is very good.) No chips the night we were in, unfortunately, but a pleasant and comfortable time was had by all. Good for groups or couples; lots of seating options. Restaurant in the back offering more than your typical pub grub, which is available at the bar. Will most likely return.
J. O.
The meal we had at the Bull and Gate was absolutely exquisite. Their menu choices are original and beautifully cuisined. The atmosphere is quaint and endearing. Staff are friendly and helpful adding to the welcoming feel of the overall experience.
C. G.
Beautiful decorated (toilets included) and really pleasant atmosphere. Staff are attentive and available without being intrusive, and the food is delicious. I had the fish and chips and the fish was really melt-in-your-mouth with thin, crispy batter and very tasty chips and mushy peas. Great wine, too! Being right by the Forum, it's a good start for a night out. :)
L. R.
Amazing, hands down. Our server, Lucy, was attentive and genuine. She never let us go without a drink and was beyond helpful when I misplaced my phone. They gave us a drink in the house because they were back logged for food in the kitchen but honestly the wait wasnt even long and the food was delicious and totally worth any wait. All of the staff were helpful and happy to serve us, would recommend over and over.
C. B.
Nice and cosy pub, great food and awesome place for a family pub meal.
Slightly pricy, but gastropub style menu.
R. S.
Booked for 16 for Sunday lunch for my birthday and a big shout out to all who work there for making it a great afternoon. Staff all friendly smiley and attentive throughout - many thanks to you all.
A mixture or Veg/Vegan and meat eaters, all catered for and the food was great.
We were even offered the option of them working out the bill split between us all, never ever had that before in a restaurant, although we didn't need it, it was a nice offering.
Totally recommend going here for a large group celebration on a Sunday afternoon.
Cheers everyone.
S. M.
nice vegan roast :)
J. T.
I have been a regular visitor to this pub over the years. It's a very nice place for a drink - clean, spacious, and nicely decorated interior. Usually has a pleasant buzz without being too loud. Drink prices are higher than usual. Where it lets itself down is in the food department which used to be excellent and fairly priced - unfortunately this is no longer the case. My last meal there was a Sunday roast - quality has dropped over time and pricing has got way out of hand. There just wasn't enough roast beef on the plate to justify the very high price. Food is definitely overpriced given the quality and quantity.
K. M.
Incredible food, wonderful beer. Rather pricey for a pub but worth every penny. Actually the amount of food on each plate makes it not that pricey at all. My dad loved it & so did I! Also one of the only meals me or my dad can remember where every item on the plate was just as good as the next. Delicious.
C. D.
Lovely pub to hang out in. Friendly staff, clientele pretty chilled out. Very beautiful building with separate dining area downstairs and another small bar upstairs. Had a decent vegan roast here on Sunday. Very dog friendly
S. M.
Will definitely be coming back!
Smashing pub with an upstairs bar and loads of seats / sofas. Such a nice atmosphere.
Friendly knowledgable staff with a wide selection of drinks & great food at a reasonable price.
The burger or fish and chips are highly recommended - the cocktails are amazing too.
N. P.
Lovely venue with bags of character. So much attention has been paid to small details that make every wall, corner & alcove you look at unique and interesting. One of the best pubs I've been to. Do be warned it's not cheap! Personally I think it's worth the additional expense but it does mean I don't visit quite as often as I would like to.
If you are in the area definitely pay it a visit, take a look around the whole place and don't forget to view upstairs. Everything has been finished to a really high standard. I always enjoy my time here.
J. D.
Had a birthday dinner for one of my friends and it was amazing. The staff were super kind and helpful, and made her birthday really special. They went above and beyond. Great food and great staff, will be coming back for sure.
K. S.
Beautiful pub. Visit on a Sunday and service staff were completely overwhelmed. Waited over 2 hours from order placed to mains on table. Not much attention paid to our table until we kicked off about it. Food arrived and it was good but not amazing. The pork roast was quite fatty and chewy in places. To be fair the manager finally came to us and made arrangements to make it right with us so thank you to him for that. I might give this place another try in 6 months and see if it's improved bc there is real potential here.
J. B.
Lovely and thoughtful staff, pretty good selection of beers, really great Bloody/Virgin Marys, very pretty venue and most importantly... a real log fire. Doesn't get too busy also so a great place to chill. One of my favourite London pubs.
B. O.
We went in for the Sunday roast. The food was absolutely delicious and the best part was the unlimited Yorkies and gravy! The servers were very friendly and fast. Great experience!
K.
Nice place. Spacious, bright. Bit overpriced for Kentish Town but on the other hand it's quite a nice pub for Kentish Town. Good place for drinks before O2 forum concert. Also great menu and separate dinning room. I liked the design and make sure you'll go to the bathroom (ladies) it's nice!
B. M.
A clean and cosy environment. Needs more of an ale selection. It was a shame that I got tonic water in my gin when I ordered gin and lemonade. The bar staff soon rectified their mistake. The venue is trendy and family friendly.
T. M.
Very friendly but food a bit nouveau cuisine, small portions but big prices. No gluten free bread, so had my veggie burger without a bun. The veggie burger was edible but tasted and felt like soggy stuffing. A bit disappointing as food much better last year.
B. F.
This place is a fairly standard Young's pub. Upstairs there is an extremely nice Gin Bar that, as far as I can tell, is often largely empty. There is an extensive dining area at the back. On both of my past couple of visits, almost all of the ales were not on at the time.
B. T.
What a lovely pub! Been for a Birthday and they had a table reserved upstairs where there is live piano music and a singer and is less pub-by and more special occasion. Upstairs they have special cocktails and you can order small tapas size food. The salmon tacos are nice! Downstairs you can have a proper meal - heard raving things about the food but haven't had the chance to try it yet.
C. D.
Very large pub. Ideal for meeting friends and family for meals. Dining room and smaller rooms gave good choices of seating. Big room upstairs with sofas especially good for quiet drinks. We had vegetarian roast meals and they were tasty well cooked with imaginative flavours. Vegetarian roast can be very dull so is a good test of how much effort a cook takes with it. Draught guest beers were not quite ready for consumption when we arrived so a little disappointing. Prices very fair.
M. P.
Nice pub with s good selection of beers and food. There is plenty of room as it has a separate restaurant area which makes for a better dining experience than just pub grub. But if your looking for either a pint in a bar or a meal in a pub then you have that too. Friendly staff.
J. J.
Great beer selection, attentive staff and a beautiful upstairs Lounge Bar
S. C.
Nice pub right beside the O2 Forum. I went here before a gig for a quick pint and it was good, with fast service at the bar, a decent range on tap and a good amount of space to find a seat.
I'll definitely try to stop in next time I see someone nextdoor - possibly for food too, which looked delicious.
C. H.
Built in 1871, this pub was freshly renovated for the most recent time in 2016. It is now a gorgeous and lovingly decorated place. The bar room downstairs is spacious, but the real gems are the dining room as well as the upstairs bar.
There is a mouthwatering menu - take care not to drool as you read it! Several local ales are on tap as well as cider. The array of other alcoholic drinks is quite impressive. I certainly plan to go back there.
C. F.
Awesome food,Service and Atmosphere!
Thanks Joe and Anthony for Everything!!!
We really recommend
D. K.
It's an absolutely beautiful pub, they did a great job on the renovation. It's a little bit pricey but in this case I think you get what you pay for. The beer selection is great also, a lot of the new trendy pubs are far too cool/snobby to sell any mainstream lagers, but I was happy to find several of the common ones here.
M. E.
The place is very nice (huge pub but well decorated with several distinct areas so you don't feel like at the train station), quite nice choice of beers (classic though), amazing venue upstairs with fire place and own bar.
The only cons was the bartender upstairs (very annoying guy, too stressed for being in hospitality and probably even don't understand the meaning of the "hospitality" term... I don't know his name, so sorry to the reset of the team, but it sounded like French)
R. S.
I visited yesterday and have had to reduce my review down. It is still a great place to go for your last decent pint before going into the forum. However, the price for soft drinks is both high and illegal. I ordered, and was given, a half pint of coke (10oz) and charged £2.45. When queried I was provided with a receipt that stated a 16oz measure. When I advised the bar staff that I had been overcharged for a half pint they called over the manager whose answer was that there wasn’t an option on the till to put through a half pint. My argument was that I wanted to pay less for less volume, but the manager didn’t understand this, and the 'compensation' was to provide me with a 16 oz coke (which I had paid for anyway?). When I continued trying to explain to the manager that the transaction had been illegal, he said 'don't beat the messenger, this is what we're told to do’. Perhaps Youngs, the landlord, need to train their staff on the Weights and Measures Act or advise their customers that soft drinks only come in 16oz and not half pints. Perhaps petty, but how many customers do you overcharge every night this way?
N. C.
The roast is incredible! The staff are so friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our visit!

The Bull and Gate is a pub I have not been in for several decades. It is an old pub and although it has been revamped (don't know when) it looks great. So many pubs look awful after breweries get their hands on them.
The downstairs is large with a restaurant at the back, upstairs is smaller but nicely and comfortably decorated.
Great selection of draught and tap beers both real ales and lagers. For a Camden pub has the obligatory Camden Micro Brewery range - which are excellent.
Good bar snacks - best sausage roll ever. Didnt eat a main meal so can't comment.
Great amotsphere and staff. Proper Rockabilly barmaid which made my week 😁
I. M.
Big pub with a more traditional feel downstairs and a more chic cocktail bar upstairs. Food is also above your average gastro pub fayre with bar snacks including a delicious home made scotch egg.
Staff seem to be either super friendly or totally unengaged but never outright rude.
S. S.
The loveliest pub with the best chips and a BANGING pub quiz!!
J. R.
Went to this pub before a gig at the Forum and absolutely loved it. Beautifully furbished and nice atmosphere with good lager selection. Great care has been taken with the Christmas decor - I was quite mesmerised by the tree! A lovely sight and although this will have no bearing on whether you visit it or not, if you do, check out the ladies loo... Fantastic Sink!
L. B.
Great place to have drinks and dinner, really nice building well mentioned. Had to lower it to 4 stars from 5 as the last few times I went service and food, were not as good as they used to be last year, it seems that over the past 12 months the place has gradually starting to get a bit worst. Still a solid choice though.
C. S.
Visited before a gig at the Forum. Apart from the broken seats in the gents toilets, everything else was cool. Would visit again, probably lay off the psychedelic truffles I took with me as I got into a really deep conversation about the stairs. Gig was amazing at the Forum.
H. H.
The pub has three parts: the actual pub, a restaurant, and a cocktail lounge/bar. So there's a little something for everyone. There's a good selection of beers on tap, the food I had was great, there was an awesome vibe, and I didn't have to wait more than two minutes to get served (which is a huge benefit in my books). Seating is a bit limited if you're in the pub area so take that into account if you want to sit and drink/eat.
B. D.
Friendly staff, which is unfortunately unusual for London pubs. Prices were good and there's loads of space so finding a table wasn't too challenging. Good prices and what looked to be a decent selection of beers
c. p.
A great bar. Lovely atmosphere, good beer (estrella) and cidre on tap as well as Ales and a good wine and spirit selection. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The food is lovely, you can either eat in the bar or there is a different menu if you want to eat in the dinning room.
L. H.
Lovely, friendly team who bent over backwards to make us feel comfortable when we visited last week. Food was great and a really nice atmosphere. Definitely recommend a visit!
T. H.
Nice-looking place inside & out, though no wheelchair access for unaccompanied customers unless you can get someone to ask staff to open the fire exit (not even a button to let staff know you're out there!). Had a decent OJ, but the sausage roll I got was £3.50 & so greasy it made me feel sick, so I didn't finish it. Decent atmosphere, but I don't know if that's the usual as I was there for a pre-gig meet & the majority of customers were fans of the same band.
E. C.
Great Victorian pub on two floors, very friendly, spacious pub in Kentish Town almost next door to the Kentish Town Forum, a legendary live music venue and five minutes walk from the tube station. Highly recommended pub.
K. M.
The Bull and Gate is a really great pub, whether for a quick pint or Sunday lunch. It's friendly, trendy and does quality grub that's not too pricey. With a wide range of beers on tap and lots of craft beers and speciality gins behind the bar, you'll be hard pressed to find somewhere else like this in Kentish Town.
D. G.
Good boozer. Gets very busy when a gig is on at the Forum. I have conflicting feelings about the Bull & Gate; it's a pub that I have been going to for 20 years and played in dozens of times with my bands. It's now definitely more upscale and less grubby, but my heart sinks when I see what used to be the venue as a dining room for the restaurant. Still, worth a visit. Service is good, even at busy times.
M. O. S.
Went for a quiet drink after finishing a job in the area, been a tradesman my clothes were understandably "Workware" a little dusty and steel toe boots.
Let's just say the bar doesn't welcome Tradesmen, the barstaff were snobby, they looked down on us as if we were inferior, career discrimination if there is such a thing?
Very poor attitude unwelcoming. They even had the audacity to say the beer may be a little too expensive for us. Yeah it was a little overpriced however we'll within our means.
Made a joke No Fosters on tap then, wasn't recieved in the intended context as a joke!
Said I'm concerned about the price of the beer only that's its cold. Had a few and left after the third lip curl from the Barstaff.
Never went back didn't eat menu looked good thought just didn't feel welcome. There loss
L. B.
Thanks again to you and your staff for such a lovely day on Sunday. The venue was perfect and the food was delicious. The other thing that MADE it was the kids table – absolute winner!
S. N.
The cocktail bar upstairs...i will never forget that pink drink garnished with the rosemary sprig. I am still hoping to find it somewhere in Canada. Hope it hasn't changed since 2016 when I visited!
R. D.
This was an unexpected gem next to Kentish Town tube. We had a private area to ourselves upstairs and it was highly enjoyable. Pleasant decor, open fires and quality food. Would recommend this pub to anyone!
C. M.
The Bull & Gate has recently opened after being taken over by Young's. First off, the decor in this pub is really lovely, if you have time, get yourself upstairs to have a look at the Boulogne Bar, it's really nice and I can't wait to go back in the winter time to enjoy the open fire.
I've eaten at the Bull & Gate a couple of times, the menu is full of pub classics and the staff are really accommodating of large groups, we pre-ordered to save some time. Although the menu is a little pricey the food is good, I've had the Pulled pork, apple sauce & crackling crumb sandwich from the lunch menu (order a side of chips, too!) and the Chicken Kiev, which I'd definitely have again.
Worth keeping an eye out for the various events and live music they have on too.
J. P. (.
This pub used to get 4 star from me because of their good vegan/veggie Sunday roast. However, their current reincarnation is poor. Mashed potato and a leek without flavour wrapped in pastry is not a vegan Wellington that makes anyone want to stay veg. Your previous incarnations of veg Sunday roasts were great. Current menu is a fail though. Also, it was missing any sauce that did anything or veg gravy. There was no purple sprouting broccoli salsa and could not find or taste a single chestnut. Bland and mushy.
R. B.
Excellent pub very busy on gig nights at the O2 Forum next door. Staff brilliant and quick discount on drinks if you have tickets for a show.
G. F.
Pub virtually next door to the Forum. Went there for pre-gig drink before the Specials, queued for 10 minutes before giving up. It wasn't overly busy, but there only seemed to be 4 or 5 people behind the bar trying to serve 50+ punters at any one time. Could see their dilemma with staffing though, as the place was virtually empty on the walk back after the show.
a. h.
Absolutely brilliant place to go with children. Super friendly staff, excellent service, good wine list and tasty food. I definitely recommend the Hake. On Saturdays at noon they have kids activities, great opportunity to meet other local parents. In all an excellent experience.
S. W.
Really impressed by the food, especially the scotch egg and veggie Sunday roast. Friendly service and nice atmosphere all round.
N. F.
Great pub with amazing history, probably last chance to see how all London pubs got gentrified before the smoking ban. Still a lovely bunch of staff can't fault them. Good people.
E. B.
Had such a lovely afternoon here! Great atmosphere and staff are so friendly and attentive. Can’t wait to go back and give the food a try!
E. C. E.
best toffee puding ever by far. Insanely good
C. L.
Awesome pub with lots of nooks and crannies holding old comfy Chesterfield and stuck like!
Bloody mary not as good as the article we read about it in. Must have changed!
J. G. W.
This place has gone through some dramatic changes since I first moved to London a few years ago. It was a quite a dive back the day. However, it now has really nice decor, staff and good selection of beers.
O.
Friendly staff. Nice selection of drinks. Cosy warm atmosphere. Lovely dining area.
C. R.
Great local pub--big open interior, decent beer selection (lots of Camden Brewery) and a great place to grab a pint or two before a gig at the Forum or for a nice dinner. Cocktail bar upstairs can make a day extra special
N. G.
Lovely pub, very friendly and attentive staff (for both humans and dogs) and gorgeous veggie food. Their new veggie breakfast in particular, surpassed expectation!
N. W.
It's difficult not to feel a deep seated sadness about this former grassroots venue's demise and conversion into a gastro pub, however it's also difficult not to like the place as the conversion is really nice, if a little generic. There's a decent selection of cask and keg ales and the former stench of blood sweat and tears has gone.
L. B.
Lovely ambience, excellent food and impeccable hosts. So good that my friends and I agreed to do our monthly meetings here!
S. H.
Lovely building. Great beers. But the food was very average/over priced for what we had. Bit surprising as it feels like a disconnect from everything else.
S. A.
Amazing service who went above to make us feel comfortable. Food was good, though a bit expensive.
A. D.
Fantastic service by staff in a busy bar with comfy sofas. Food great too. 10% discount for showing ticket for O2 Forum event a nice bonus.
w. s.
Because you can stuff your sane behaviour when every Liverpool fan in the world crowds in there to see Klopperpool smash Chelsea where they deserve.
And nice drinks, obvs.
J. H.
Recently reopened after an extended period of being closed, now a Youngs pub. Youngs should be given credit for the amount of money they poured into making this a workable pub again - it's all too easy to sneer at the pub chains, but the reality is that an independent owner almost certainly wouldn't have had the funds to bring this place back to life.
That said - and maybe it's just unfair to judge so soon - the new incarnation errs on the side of the bland and generic, and the decor has an air of Farrow and Ball about it. Still, worth revisiting a bit later once it's had a chance to find its feet and re-develop a bit of character.
J. M.
Great pub with a really nice atmosphere for any occasion, delicious food and extremely friendly staff. Will definitely go back when in the area!!
B. W.
My absolute favourite Sunday lunch in London fantastic service good menu selections very accommodating for gluten free
J. D.
Fine Sunday lunch, especially the vegetable accompaniments (tasty red cabbage), but a bit pricey: £19 for a thin slice of toast beef. Decent but not great selection of beers.
R. M.
A great place for food and ale. A tardis of a pub. Deceptively large based on the entrance. Lovely restaurant area and chilled snug sofa areas upstairs.
G. S.
Massive Pub, with good food.
G. B.
Amazing staff, lovely venue and a wide range of drinks.
A. B.
An excellent experience made even better by the eat out to help out contribution. Good communication from the staff and I felt very safe. I will be back
I. “. S.
Still worth a visit despite the lack of venue.
C. H.
Cosy atmosphere, great cocktail menu, & new arrangements like ordering via app working well. Thank you!
L. P.
Amazing food and lonely atmosphere! Plenty vegan options, prices are very reasonable. Will 100% visit again, if in the area :)
E. s.
Love this pub, even the loos are cool! Really comfortable and a perfect Sunday afternoon pub. A touch pricey but still one of my favourite pubs to chill out in
S. B.
Great pub - really brilliant range of drinks and lovely atmosphere. Very clean and a really nice place to spend an evening!
J. S.
Visited for Sunday lunch. Amazing place with reclaimed materials and distress effects for decor in dining room. Delicious roasts and veg for lunch. Had a lovely experience and hope to return.
F. P. (.
I went there. The bull sharing board is fantastic as well as there Mac and Cheese. Frequently staff and lots of different rooms to offer for private functions.
C.
A place to go!
Really amazed by the place, as not expected at all.
People are nice and this is a place children and pets friendly.
Price wise we are reaching the high range of a pub, but worth it.
a. r.
Loved this place , lovely staff, due for another visit..
E. L.
Really friendly and helpful staff (gave loads of good recommendations), the food is fresh and of quality and the overall atmosphere of the place is superb!
P. D.
Delicious gasteo pub menu in the restaurant at the back, great pub vibes at the front. Well worth a visit.
W. P.
One of the best pubs in London. Beautiful, spacious, and filled with charm. The cocktail bar upstairs is particularly special.
P. H.
Ok food nice friendly staff
M. D.
Great food and drink amazing staff will definitely be returning in the future and telling all my friends that the bull and gate Kentish town is the place to be !
K.
Very nice atmosphere. Food is good and staff has always been friendly (can be a bit slow for lunch service sometimes)
J. M.
Very pleasant and classy pub. Good food selection (tacos in particular and wide array of drinks at reasonable prices. Good for a date, get together with friends
S. V.
Nice pub in a good location, it has great décor, the staff are friendly, and they have a decent pub menu and the food was good, one lost star due to it being a bit pricey.
J. D.
Nice. Super busy when we went - though it was straight before a gig. If you're going to a gig at the Forum and you bring your ticket you get 10% off your order.
M. K.
It's one of the prettiest pub around. The room upstairs is very Victorian study-like. Wall covered in sketches and books
R.
Lovely old pub! Beautiful decor would like to have stayed for food although looked very pricey!
N. R.
Delicious Sunday roast. Both the chicken and the veg option were particularly good, and the potatoes were perfect: crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.
S. C.
I went at lunch so here's my perspective. Good, freshly cooked food, good drinks selection. Music got a little loud towards the end of the visit, but got the impression that the staff would have turned it down had we asked. Will return if in the area again.
P. H.
Very nice place but I found it very expensive
P. T.
Very friendly Staff but like most Pubs expensive. Weatherspoons are best but they pay their staff low wages
G. P.
Perfect pub for dinner and drinks with friends. Food is very good and the staff is nice. Try the room upstairs for more privacy and cosy sofa.
J. M.
Great pub (although food is slightly overpriced) the upstairs bar is amazing especially for large group gatherings!
Interior is well maintain.
H. H.
Quick service. The food is to die for (best roast in North London) and the pub itself and beautifully decorated with a cosy piano bar upstairs for a chilled evening.
B. e.
This pub is quite nice. Not very noisy, not very dirty, not too smelly! I like the food there but I would say quite expensive for a pub....
A. C.
Good food. Lots of drinks. Opposite the tube station and next to the forum. It's also massive with a big dining room if you want a proper meal.
S. M.
Really enjoyed Sunday roast. Nice friendly staff. They have done an excellent job refurbing this old north London gem. Gastro pub at its best.
A. Z.
Very nice pub, good character and nice atmosphere. Bur drinks are quite expensive and staff is not friendly or helpful. Shame!
R. C.
Seems a nice enough pub. Only stopped in for a quick pint before a gig but it looks a decent enough place for a night out
S. H.
Vegetarian roast was delicious - and they have a vegan option with vegan Yorkshires. Nice gravy and lots of veg.
J. K.
Stunning building, delicious food and friendly helpful staff. Enjoyed lunch here and would recommend.
R. W.
Youngs have done an excellent job. Decor is great. Good atmosphere. Lovely open fire. Lots of natural light. Pricey.
T. V.
Very good but expensive wine selection. A lovely space with the most amazing period features and a lovely restaurant that allows for plenty for light to come inside.
e. r.
Quite good overall, really nice atmosphere, prompt service, food was definitely good and colourful but not amazing. Would recommend though nice place to hang out with friends.
A. S.
One of the best pubs in Kentish Town. Food is excellent and it has a great "after-work vibe".
S. S.
Great quality and lovely staff!
M. M.

J. A.
Beautifully renovated pub, cozy, charming. Good selection of ciders and beers. Burger was really good, also.

S. P.
Went for an engagement party. Easy to get to by tube. Nice decor, tasty food, lovely surroundings.
M. S.
Nicely appointed pub which does a mean cocktail. Not the cheapest place to drink but it's very nice and the staff are cool
B. K.
First stop on the pub crawl. Cosy. Decent chpice of beer. Looks like a nice place to eat too. They have seperate dining area which looks great
C. B.

A. A.
Great food, Lovely dining room at the back. Excellent for Sunday roast but also top quality on week days
J. K.
Lovely pre gig pub near the Forum.
Good selection of beers, lagers, wines and spirits and a really good menu too.
W. K.
Just a great pub, plenty of space and a great selection of ales. Expensive, but it's got shiny bogs so what do you expect eh?
J. S.
Food (vegetarian and vegan) superbly done
Service wow no fault from our server who served us 👍
g. u.
Been here for a few roast dinners they are nice, and the staff are friendly. Roast potatoes do need work on as they weren't crispy at all.
L. B.
Just had fish n chips, very good!
Service was good and welcoming as well, always a bonus.
A. P.
Nice large pub, interior a bit 'gastropub blueprint'. Chain despite giving independent vibe. No better place ahead of a gig at the Forum
E. D. M.
Nice location and I also are vegan!
A. F.
Another expensive pub to eat at. Food tasty even though the service is slow.
Drink selection is nice.
P. P.
Beautiful historic London pub. Lovely staff too. How proper pubs should be!
J. Q.
Great menu; food excellent; service fantastic; amazing ambience; chef hospitable & chatty

Great place and reasonable prices. Get fresh pizza. There is downstairs area where occasional comedy night take place... So lovely...
M. L.
Cosy pub and friendly staff. Table service seemed over worked and slow though
J. B.
One of the best Sunday roasts I've had in a long time. Excellent service too.
P. A.
A great restaurant/pub, good food, great service, but they can be slow taking your money - their triple cooked chips are fabulous!
J. H.
Such a shame was a really good pub with live music. Not anymore turned it all gastro ambit seems you must have a small child with you
R. V.
Lovely staff and food. Best vegan roast so far.
c. w.
Beautiful Victorian pub. Food is lovely. Handy as it is close the O2 forum
D. W.
Great food & beer. comfortable and cosy. Has a kids menu.
B. T.
Really disappointing food. Over cooked scallops and hugely underwhelming steak. Cheese board was very dull.
R. S.
Long haired, foreign bartender upstairs made me some spicy, zesty incredible cocktail off the top of his head. Would go back just to have it again.
J. B.
Great venue and the food is presented well and tasted good. Lovely staff in the dining room.
M. F.
Great traditional pub, good real ales, upstairs with real fires.
