Reviews of Crusting Pipe
C. N.
This place has made me question previous 5 star reviews, because this place deserves 10!
A wonderful little atmospheric place in the heart of Covent Garden. Situated underneath the main plaza it's tucked nicely away. I'm not sure if there's step free access (I didn't see a lift). Super comfy layout with plenty of space to get around and not have a feeling of sitting on top of other diners.
I felt a Monday evening treat was due and opted for the sirloin steak. And what a treat. Cooked to perfection and oozing with taste. Accompanied with a great leaf salad it was delicious. It was melt-in-the-mouth standard. I'm not intelligent enough to put the appropriate words in just how amazing it was, I'll simply say, I suspect it'll be a long time before I have one better! And all for a very reasonable, I thought, £27.
A fantastic selection of wines for every palette (and pocket) but don't rush to the main wine list; the front page has some independent and low yield drops. I enjoyed a delicious red at £8 a glass.
Desert was the ever present Sticky toffee pudding. A fluffy and tasty slice accompanied with smooth and silky clotted cream was the perfect finale to a wonderful meal.
Service was too rate with polite and friendly staff (Thank you, Shirley) that added to a very pleasant experience.
Whole meal with drinks, 2 courses and coffee rounded to £50pp. Discretionary service charge of 6.5% is added to the bill and is included in the above. Very reasonable, I thought.
I suspect it gets busy pre-shows (it does a pre-show menu between 5-7) but I arrived at 8 and was seated immediately.
G. B.
Good food, good service, with live opera being sang at the outdoor covered area. You can have just a drink or a full meal. Inside or outside. Booking may be required for dining in.
E. C.
Not so sure about this one. Only ordered coffee and felt that because it wasn't a food/big order the waitress couldn't really be bothered. A smile might have helped. Coffee was good though.
L. C.
I love this place. It has great food, wine and opera. What else do you need for lunch?
S. C.
Our waitress was friendly and super helpful, however service was a little slow as they seemed a bit stretched.
Would have spent the rest of the night here but the thought of waiting around for orders each time put us off.
Felt more like those touristic places where you're not expected to be seen again after the day's service so your experience doesn't matter.
P.S. Food was a little bland on all dishes.
J. O.
Great location and service but the food wasn't too good. Our waitess was excellent couldn't have been more helpful. Our party of three had two chicken schnitzels and the steak sandwich. The schnitzel was very ordinary and just OK. The steak sandwich was in a burned bun and the steak was chewy with a large lump of gristle in the middle of it.
G. C.
Gorgeous underground restaurant pub right in the centre of Covent Garden. Been going there for years for annual Christmas gathering. Gorgeous food, reasonably priced. Great atmosphere.
D. L.
Good food, service ok. Best feature is live music from opera House players
R. (.
It is on a lovely setting and the live music is appropriate for the settings. We ordered the Vegetarian Davy breakfast and orange juice. The orange juice was freshly squeesed and refreshing. The beans was stated as spicy but that was completely inaccurate... They were plain. The rest of the food was bland even with salt and pepper. The presentation of the food was nice and the service was nothing amazing. There is also a 10% service added to the bill which is optional.
M.
Beautiful location, singers often come down and perform while you eat. They have a classic menu not a huge variety of choices but the food is done well. Quite pricey but its a lovely treat once in a while when visiting London.
J. H.
We had a lovely experience here on Saturday. The atmosphere is usually wonderful anyway and it's really nice to come visit while there are musicians playing too. The food was good and pretty reasonable considering the location, but it's definitely worth a trip just to hear the opera singers or the band. It was great ordering on the app too and made it really easy.
G. W.
Food good . Service excellent. The added live entertainment added well to the whole experience
D. S.
Lovely area to visit for a light lunch and great coffee, and the fabulous singer and musicians
L. E.
This located inside the Covent Garden,, the food was delicious.. Toffee Sticky Pudding is highly recomended
K. D.
Quaint eatery in the heart of Covent Garden...full English breakfast was fantastic!
P.
To get the most from this intimate watering hole, grab a table inside and soak up the atmosphere of Dickensian London under the vaulted brick ceiling as you sip a glass of gin (or two!).
R. K.
Great place, had a very personal feel to it despite being in a very busy central London location
I. Y.
Reliable wine bar
Visited during Covid restrictions - resulting in a reduced menu choice
J. G.
Best place in Covent Garden. Fast service and great no nonsense snacks and wine.
I. S.
very nice place ,friendly staff. had pancakes and hot chocolate there 😋
J. C.
Had breakfast there with my daughter... Caters for gluten intolerance. Great service. Great food and coffee.
L. H.
Great place to meet up. Staff were brilliant!
j. c.
Staff very friendly although atmosphere is lacking a little on Friday night.
K. B.
Love the atmosphere at this place. Great wine to .
S. D.
Excellent service and good food.
Their theatre special which starts at 3.30pm is
especially good value. (2 or 3 courses)
They provide a blanket as you can seat "outside"
under the Covent Garden glass roof.
However inside tables are available.
Charming musical groups perform outside
(opera and classical music)
Wonderful wine list.
The only way that you can go wrong
is that is fairly full at rush times and it will
be difficult to get a table.
A. L.
Good wine, great food... a bit expensive
B. F.
Nice resturant. Friendly staff, good food and good wine.
M. S.
This is a really nice, atmospheric place in the basement at Covent Garden Market and hence on the heart of London. We use it for groups of 6-10 and they have excellent private rooms for parties of this size. The lunch set menus provide a good range of dishes and are reasonably priced given the quality and location. Recommended.
S. C.
Fabulous food, lovely staff! Lucky to have such wonderful talent to entertain diners
T. D.
Food is fine (had the breakfast). Coffee got cold pretty fast outside as it wasn't too hot to begin with. Nothing special. Live music outside can be quite good and they have blankets to stay warm. Look really good inside.
M. P.
I've been going since 2000 and nothing changed. Love it.
E. S. P. T.
Just had breakfast at this lovely restaurant. We've been before and returned as the food and service is always so good. Today we were served by Anna, who, despite being very busy, was attentive, polite, considerate, just lovely in fact! The service is always critical for me, and today, like usual, we were delighted. We'll be back! And the food quality was exceptional.
K. M.
Afternoon tea was average and a bit overpriced but atmosphere with music 🎶 was wonderful :)
J. W.
I am very surprised to see some disappointing reviews because I always visit this bar on Beaujolais Nouveau day, (third Thursday of November) and this year my friends and I were treated like royalty. It was a good year for the wine and the food was wonderful. We were very well waited on by a member of staff who attended to our every needs unobtrusively. I do also come here from time to time during the course of the year and it is my favourite wine bar in London.
D. G.
Great place for a reunion because you can have a private space for 6 or 12 or semi-private spaces for 4. Main course of roast cod wrapped in ham was great. Starter of crab was disappointing, watery... thought it was frozen... probably a poor choice in hind sight.
Great atmosphere... Service was Fine
J. D.
We had a nice meal here after a long day walking in London. Yes a bit touristy and somewhat pricey but we expected that, a nice atmosphere nonetheless, and lovely to sit and listen to the string quartet/quintet and a beautiful soprano. Service very slow and a built in "service charge" a little annoying but staff were very pleasant and slow service almost forgotten when I tasted the BEST risotto I have had for a long time - just gorgeous!
L. M. (.
Was nice, short staffed. Food was average
J. B.
A Davy's wine merchant bar, so a solid wine list, and classic British fare. You will not be disappointed. Staff are attentive and knowledgeable, plenty of wines by the glass, and private rooms and nooks to hide away in. Comfortable, dim cellar, environment so better for Autumn/winter.
E. D.
Pretty good food, the wine was great, just be aware that, as in most pubs, people will bring their small children along so you can enjoy a nice conversation punctuated by a toddler screaming.
S. B.
Lovely place to relax with a glass if wine. Only eaten thre once and food was ok, not excellent but fine. Excellent choice of wines. Service was good.
H. M.
Great food, although a bit expensive. It took about 10 minutes to get our drinks, which was a bit annoying. The nice staff made up for it though. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I would go back again.
b. p.
Lovely!! Beautiful setting, Wonderful food, wine and ambiance. Warm and friendly service. A must visit and have done so every time I'm in town
t. m.
Lovely place to eat and enjoy a glass of wine
M. M.
Fantastic wine and food, sit outside for excellent music.

Visit : lunch / couple
Within the turmoil of tourists and street performers is the ole crusting pipe ... situated in the center of the old covent garden market building with court yard outside seating and then the traditional brick arch and basement dining areas within. Partial frumpy staff mixed with spritely happy characters its a place of times before ( one guess but then i am comparing against the george and vulture of the city ). Being part of the Davys wine restaurants and bar chain it has a very good choice of wines from various regions and ranging across all the prices - your only bad choice of wine is due to your own bad taste or getting a 'corked' bottle
Now this location is famous for their sausage and mash along with one or two other dishes - i believe pies - however for us with these venues it is always sandwich plates and a good red pinot.
Extremely busy venue so either book or arrive early - outside is always packed
Staff are rushed but each time we have found the service extremely friendly and interactive
On our last visit we did have to chuckle at the fuss some american tourists created ........ there needs to be perhaps a recommendation card for this venue and american tourists which should read along the lines of : stopping pissing around and order 1) a bottle of decent vino and then 2) order your food after having a drink first
Certainly some odd characters coming into this venue and that makes a stop here quite entertaining along with being a reasonably price wine spot right smack bang in the ground zero of tourist hell covent garden

Hosted a murder mystery party here and the experience was great. Booking was easy and the deposit was only 50 pounds for 12 people which is great considering the Crusting Pipe’s central location. Jana (who organised my booking) was amazing. She helped me organise the room, pre-book the meals and sort out the deposit. The food and service were both also good. I recommend getting the brownie if you want a nice dessert! They were also extremely helpful when it came to paying the bill. We were a big group and they made the process very easy! Would definitely recommend if organising a dinner party!
J. E.
Very nice location in the heart of Covent Garden. The food was good enough but tough to justify the high price.
Service, however, was poor, always polite but slow and we really had to try quite hard to get the attention of the waiters.
A. T.
Covent garden is one of my favourite places in the West End, and the Crusting Pipe is the cherry on the cake. I love the musicians, the surroundings and the ambience. Oh, and the food is very tasty too...
A. J. M.
Of all the eateries in the central part of Covent Garden, CP sits in the basement amongst other eateries catering for all tastes. However, if you wish for somewhere a little less noisy but cosy, away from the crowd, then CP is for you, it is design to bring a sense of intimacy with your fellow diner or group with cubicles away from prying eyes. The food is of good quality as is their own in house ale complementing other familiar beverages. Ideal to refuel before getting on with your day or evening. Enjoy.
C. P.
A very good little restaurant in Covent Garden offering a good menu with a fair wine list. Ideal for pre theatre visits or lunches. Often the excellent Covent Garden performers play outside giving the place a great ambience. Friendly staff and overall a very good experience.
L. O.
On a very busy evening the maitre d managed to find a table for 3 of us. Service was very friendly and attentive without being over bearing. The food and wine was just right. Great night out.
S.
Really good price, and the food was delicious. It was lovely to watch live music just outside too. A great place to go in the summer. Looking forward to visiting again.
M. R.
Very nice experience, the menus are rich and the dishes are well-executed. All ingredients are mentioned and traced back to the origin for a more authentic experience. Not the cheapest of places but worth a try for the friendly and professional staff. Try the twinklemore cheese at the end, together with some porto.
F. D.
Such a shame such a gorgeous and eccentric place is blighted by such horrible staff. My friend askedfora a pint of larger and was firmly rebuked, didn't we know it was a wine bar? I asked for cuvuncuc in my gin and soda and was told off. This appears to be a recurring theme, I guess management don't care because there's such a high tourist footfall. They need to sort out some decent wait staff urgently.
A. W.
Had afternoon Tea here, me and my daughter in the beginning of may 2015. We loved it. Great service, delicios tea and even entertainment in form of classical music and opera. Perfekt for a hungry and tired tourist. 🍰☕️😋
A. M.
Large choices of wine in a wonderful place
A. S.
Despite being a little bit pricey and a bit too touristy, this quirky upscale corner is an ideal place to catch up in the busy Covent Garden. Do note - there is usually a wait to get the best seats in the house, which is usually the ones in the courtyard from where you can feel the full force of the opera performers. They also host large groups.
T. M. K.
One of the older establishment on the lower level. There are often street musicians in this yard so you can watch it from their terrace. They have good wine (it is a wine bar afterall) list and food too. Much more seats inside with a labyrinth like floorplan.
F. H.
TL;DR: Gluten-free bread available even though it doesn't say on the menu, waitress super attentive about cross-contamination.
Cosy place under the arches. We had mulled wine and the charcuterie and cheese board. The mulled wine was nicely aromatic but very sweet. The highlight was definitely the charcuterie and cheese board, which upon hearing that I had celiac, the waitress offered to replace the bread with gluten-free bread. I was especially delighted when unprompted by me, she told me she'd make sure everything would be prepared separately, and repeated that again when she brought the food.
T. H.
Went here for Xmas dinner with friends. The food, ambience and service was great. Also a nice place to go for a drink if you don't wanna eat food.
X.
Very cosy! We come here every time we're in London. Sandwiches are boring, choose a warm dish.
Perfect for a glass of wine in the evening!
R. W.
An unusual location at lower-ground level in the middle of the Covent Garden shops & market stalls, just across from the Royal Opera House.
Inside, it's like 'old school' wine vaults where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden and sit in the cool underground catacombs while you enjoy one or more of the extensive range of good wines. Can't remember if they do many beers, but you can get a bottled lager.
The bar is quite small so it can take a little time to get served, and of course the bar prices are at London levels. The food is fine, but we didn't really explore the menu fully and have usually had light salads or snacks there, tapas-style.
You can also sit outside in the courtyard and listen to the occasional open-air entertainer, which is usually something like a string quartet and / or light opera.
Recommended and worth a visit.
A. B.
Had a very nice breakfast here, set us up nicely for the day ahead in London, definitely recommend this place
B. M.
Cor blimey guv. Sit outside if space and the weather permits. Drinks were good. Didn't eat. I half expected Mary Poppins to swing by on her brolly. The atmosphere is cheeky London crowds mixed with memorable buskers. One freelance Opera singer took us on a mini tour of these we have loved with arias from Aida, Butterfly and Cosi fan tutte. Simply lovely.
J. S.
Staff genuinely genial. Loved the Food and The range in imbibements was a cornucopia of delicious dalliance. Tasty Food - Delicious Grape and Grain Drinks - Comfortable Catacombs for Creature Comforts.
J. C.
Great place to listen to live opera and orchestral music while sipping wine or dining. The performers put on a good show, it's a fab atmosphere, very London xx
M. a. d. s.
I came here today and the service was very good. A young man was serving me, a really enjoyed. The duck pate is amazing. Really recommend. Thank u very much
M. P.
Tasty salads and wine. We had lunch there, opting for two different salads, preceded by a cheese set with sauvingon blanc wine. Served efficiently, very tasty - fresh and well spiced. The portions are rather on the small side.
E. C.
Waited to long for service even though it wasn't busy.
J. M.
Love this place in Covent Garden...just the place to sit and have a glass of wine and listen to the street entertainers that perform there.
J. D.
Enjoyable place to go in Central London
M. S.
Been there for afternoon tea, it was great. Friday evening with my husband and prosecco, listening to the free entertainment outside. Can't get better.
J. H.
Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff. Well executed afternoon tea. Fair price if you go for the cheese and port upgrade.
F. F.
A bit expensive but nice food
G. S.
Second time I have been here and it didn't disappoint! Friendly service and great food with a cozy atmosphere
R. S.
Never knew you could just have a drink here and enjoy the singers. Food is remarkable value for where it is, we were very pleasantly surprised.
R. B.
Great food and service, very busy but was worth the wait for an outside seat as weather was good and there were the buskers to listen to
L. H.
Beautiful place, lots of character and very cosy. Superb service and wonderful breakfast was had. Will definately return. 😊
D. J.
The best place for celebrate Christmas party.
R. W.
Lots of empty tables inside the dingy cellar area indoors, despite being a busy evening elsewhere. Small number of waiting staff covering the whole place, so always had to find someone to serve us.
J. J.
Decent food, excellent cheese. Excellent wine selection. Generally very civilised spot for lunch, tea or a glass of wine
D. H.
Wonderful little hideaway in the middle of Covent Garden, with nooks and crannies to sit in the old cellars. Never had the food but an after-dinner Port goes down well here.
L. R.
Lovely place. Service is outstanding! Can't recommend enough
E. H.
I have been coming here for over 10 years and have brought a number of different friends here and have yet to have a bad experience, food is always good, service friendly, there is a nice ambience and the location is convenient.
S. B. G.
4 stars for food an extra star for the entertainment.
H. T.
Standard Davy's. Decent selection of wine and food, if not amazing quality. In an old cellar so can be a bit lightless inside.
A. T.
Wine > food. Food on the cold side...
J. P.
I used to work in this area ere years ago and never knew it existed! First time today for me - I would say just a slight notch up from bog standard pub gastro food
A. C.

(Translated) It is a great place to eat or have an afternoon tea. The place is spacious and very well decorated in an industrial style. When we were we saw a small problem with the attention of the staff, we saw them a little "clueless" they took a long time to attend to us. Overall the experience was good. Afternoon tea for three people was around £ 25 per person.
