Reviews of Duchess of Kent
m. p.
Lovely pub close to Highbury.
Nice selection of beers and cyder and food.
We been on Sunday then we tried the Sunday roast and was very good.
Staff was great and a very good atmosphere.
Really recommend!
A. K.
Lovely atmosphere, great food and beers, friendly staff.
I. G.
Walked passed it many times so nice to ge able to pop in for the first time. Bigger inside than it looks from the outside. Beer was good, didn't eat so can't comment on food but looked nice.
K. L.
Attentive staff, delicious food and amazing fast service. There’s not many pubs these days during COVID that you can expect a drink in less than 2 minutes waiting! Amazing!
The food (although we only had the triple cooked chips and ox cheek nuggets with pickled cucumbers) was delicious!
Great selection of beer and wine and I genuinely can’t wait to be able to have a beer indoors from the 17th May!
Only small criticism is the price of booze - £6.30 was the price for a pint of peroni but I’m in post-COVID london, so…
E. D.
Good guinness, pub quiz on Mondays, nice menu but a bit pricey £££
C. W.
What a great place! A very good (big and tasty) fish n chips. Vegan burger probably the best I’ve tasted. Excellent pub.
S. Q.
Awesome roast. Simple but cooked to perfection. Friendly service
J. M.
Newly refurbished...different colour scheme and new furniture this was the trial run ...a free 2 course meal offered. We hadn't been for 15 months as the food had gone down hill..so give it a go. Starter of oyster fried in breadcrumbs excellent...main courses less so...partner had faggotts and mash..tasty but a little over salted. Good portion size. My burger...not good enough for the price even with a bap...see photos. Staff were keen although communications not great...asked at least twice for most things. Pleasant waiting staff and they listened to the feedback..surprised that there are no black youngsters looking for jobs...but the manager..not at all interested. In response to a complaint about the burger and chips "that's how we do it here'...perhaps they shouldn't. Will we go back? It is remarkably convenient oh missing HRD 129 now that was a good burger!

Great place for a few beers after work or a weekend lunch. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.
B. C.
Best pint of Peroni in Islington. Bar staff ain’t bad either! :) x
J. V.
Refurbished and looking good.
Comfortable.
New menu.
Starters good English selection, main pictured - mackerel salad, mackerel perfectly grilled!
Interior all seating and decor new - nice art prints (Harlan Miller and others).
J. W.
Staff are friendly and very helpful, great beer, delicious food. Can recommend Sunday roast for a nice lunchtime with a relaxing atmosphere.
U. S.
Went this Monday for a lunch with my family, food and services was great, Nelson and Millie are very welcoming and made really good atmosphere in the pub. I will come back soon for sure.
I. S.
Friendly staff, but the food is very average. I had the burger that they grill on the spot outside with fries. The burger was overcooked and not very tasty and the bun, while it was good quality was cold. The fries were good.
D. C.
Sirloin Sunday roast was wonderful. A bit pricey, but very tasty. Deserts were a bit disappointing but will definitely be visiting again soon to try some other items on the menu.
A.
The table service on a summers evening was great, we all really enjoyed our food and drinks.
M. V.
My first ever English Sunday Roast! Loved the setting and the staff were great; I’ve also been back in to watch the football, and it’s great for that too
C. G.
Had fantastic drinks unfortunately we did have to move due to reservations but lucky enough table next hours leaving so wasn't too much of a problem book a table in advance hopefully after covid-19 everywhere gets better
T. M.
Really friendly service. We had a great spot by the fire; perfect for Sunday roast. My pic is of the veggie option
c. l.
Beautiful pub, wonderful food, great drinks. The amazing people behind the bar are so attentive and so incredibly nice. Please go here and spend all your money and tip generously.
C.
Lovely pub. Went here for impromptu drinks and stayed for something to eat. Service was lovely, very accomodating- especially bearing in mind current situation. Food was also v good - albeit taking a little while hence 4 rather than 5 stars - just not a fan of the crab rarebit starter!
N. G.
We had tea outside. Nice and quiet on a Friday afternoon. Will have to go back to try the food.
T. F.
Great food, friendly staff, really comfortable seating indoors with plenty of space. Perfect!
T.
Brilliant! :)
A group of 11 and a baby came here yesterday for my birthday lunch and it was perfect. The Sunday Roast was delicious, the vibe was chilled and the staff were friendly. Was worried about the pub not being baby friendly but I spoke with staff on the phone and he was really helpful and made my booking effortless. Do book in advance especially for bigger groups. Overall, highly recommend coming here. Thank you so much! :)
M. C.
Fantastic pub! Great food and quality ale with lovely warm heaters and umbrellas make it comfortable for outside drinking
J. L.
Popped in for a casual meal and drink with no expectations. Genuinely surprised by the outstanding quick service!! So prompt and friendly. Great local venue. Will be back - from a guy who doesn’t usually write reviews
M. B.
Good selection of beers, good food!
N. S.
Nice pub, good decor, cool staff, good menu. I tried this pub after visiting a more highly rated pub nearby (best not to name names) that was rather disappointing. I happened upon the Duchess of Kent which had a lower Google rating but in fact was much better. For one thing, I could tell the A/C was working the moment I stepped in on this very hot day (34C). I ordered some pints and appetizers for the group I was with and all were quite good. Staff was friendly. Music was good. Restroom was very clean. The place isn't the cheapest, but value is good. I will return for sure.
E. D.
Always used to come here with a friend on my way back from work for a pint and a scotch egg, was very upset when it switched to pure pasties- but post lockdown it’s back to the scotch egg glory! Great outside space, lovely staff and very professional with the covid measures- table service is actually very nice! Would thoroughly recommend
L.
Polite staff. Quiet at lunchtime when we arrived, although perked up about 1pm. We had a Xmas lunch buffet. Wasn't very good really. Basic presentation. Some of the food was cold. Stuffing was kinda burnt. Roast potatoes were lovely tho and very hot.
We had desserts and they were all lovely! Plus, they had mulled cider which was nice too. All in all, if I was passing I'd go in for a drink or a sneaky dessert. But I wouldn't specifically return for food.
R. H.
We had such a fabulous time here! The outside seating area is great, and fantastic atmosphere and food as well. Thanks for the amazing service, the team is really lovely.
H. D.
Great selection of beers, good Arsenal pub, but gets a bit packed on match days so be prepared for a bit of a wait. The gourmet burger stand at the front on match days is tasty and filling, so don't spoil your appetite before you go
K. M.
Was in there earlier tonight and have to say I loved the warm atmosphere and great beer! Had a Neck Oil (delicious!) and a Pie Special - which is the best pie I’ve had in a while! And to top it off - service was really good! Definitely recommend for a great local feel with good beer and food! Maybe not for a crazy night out though - save that for later! :)
S. P.
Shared a whole roast chicken with my partner and it was 👌👌. Definitely could have fed three! Fantastic value for great food. Definitely stop by for a roast if you are hungry!
A. C.
Amazing reception, friendly staff, great drinks....
No straws to drink with (not even paper ones)
Good snacks, good vibe.... still no straws
P.S I do care about the turtles I also care about drinking from a straw.... as long as it is eco friendly!
C. M.
Great local pub with welcoming ambience and serving delicious food- the pies are top notch!
Staff are friendly and hospitable, ensuring patrons are well looked after.
Definitely worth a visit!
M. P.
good beer selection. *really* good food, gastro++.
Good service.
we call the dutches our local, because we walk past the other pubs to get there.
J. M.
Great place to watch the footey without too much hastle!
L. R.
Great local pub. They have recently refurbished it - staff very friendly. We came to watch the rugby & were very well looked after. Good food, good vibes. Thank you!
J. H.
Recently redecorated and good food . Good place to watch sport and enjoy a good selection of beers and bar snacks. Not much atmosphere on the Friday night we attended and a pint of lager exceeded £6 and a bottle of ok picpol more than £30 so a bit pricey. Nice comfy setee by the fire though
D. M.
Nice relaxing pub in a relatively (this is London after all) quiet place. Good selection of beers, tasty food (at least the Sunday roast I've tried). It's a cozy place to sit inside and enjoy food and beers. Also there are quite a few tables outside making an ideal pub to go when the weather is good.
T. P.
A proper gastropub. They take their food very seriously and have different menus through the week. Lovely seating both inside and outside and one of the few air-conditioned pubs in the neighborhood. Food was very nice, staff was uber nice and the whole experience was great. To be fair, we went there on a Monday afternoon so can't say what it'll be like when it gets busy.
A. M.
We were a table of 12 and had a great lunch. Our waitress was super busy but absolutely lovely & went out of her way to make us feel welcome.. thank you so much! The food was great too. We're a picky bunch yet the duchess delivered on all fronts!
J. G.
Had a really average Christmas meal here which cost a fortune
G. L.
Great food and friendly service. Check out the specials- they are usually very tasty! Outdoor bbq on match days, a lot of fun and very busy. Weekend brunch is worth a visit, not just because of the fab Bloody Marys :)
A. C.
From the very start when I was looking for a venue for my 50th, the Duchess of Kent stood out. All the staff, were fantastic and so accommodating and chilled. On the night, the tables looked beautful and the food was delicious and the drinks flowed! I have had so many compliments after the party to say how great the vibe was. This is a lovely, friendly pub where I was so well looked after. Thank you so much!
J. L.
Wonderful local pub, fantastic beers on draft, lovely staff and excellent food. Also, really considerate on social distancing. Couldn't recommend it more.
E. B.
We had a great time here on a Wednesday evening! Great food and great drinks. Staff were really lovely as well, especially Seb the manager!
A. L.
Outstanding service of Beata. She made our night out very special. The drinks we had were first class. Definitely recommend!
C. W.
Well intentioned but slightly intense staff. Food was very overpriced - £24 for a very average steak seemed outrageous. The best bit was the ice cream, which is Jude’s, so you could just buy that at a supermarket. Overall a bit disappointing and wouldn’t go back there for food. Probably a great place for a glass of wine or two after a walk on a Sunday.
S. J.
Lovely place, amazing people, cozy atmosphere, great food as well, I highly recommend the pork belly and beetroot hummus- delicious. Special greetings to Beata, very energetic and funny person. 5 stars no hesitation. :))
S. M.
We were a group of cancer research scientists getting together to celebrate the new year on New Years Eve. Seb and his team were so attentive and made sure that everyone was having a good time. There was karaoke and Nelson and I had a great time dancing. Also, why are all the staff so attractive? Don’t ask me which one I kissed; I don’t kiss and tell...😉
D. Y.
I went here before the Arsenal Chelsea match on a recommendation and was very happy I did. It was crowded but never crazy, with a more 'upscale' football clientele. I didn't eat anything but the food looked great and it seemed like it would a very cozy pub for non match days.
W. L.
This is a restaurant/pub than a pub/ restaurant. Good food reasonably priced. Good selection of London beers, good ambience, there are music but not too loud, you can have a conversation with out having to raise your voice lastly no sky t.v. beocasting live sports matches.Good friendly staffs, you can order at the bar or there is table service
J. M.
Lovely festive meal and staff.
P. K.
Nice pub with good range of beers and polite staff. Entered here after a football game and the place was a bit crowded but didn't bother. Good atmosphere.
R. M.
Decent pub, good atmosphere
T. K.
A bit expensive else would have been a great local.
A. B.
Went for lunch with the family to take part in the Eat Out To Help Out scheme! So glad we did! Food and drinks were delicious and the staff friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!
6. G.
I came here for lunch during my holiday, first look? Absolutely amazing, merges the new and the vintage. The food was amazing and the service even better. Will definitely be coming back next year!
A. D.
Very nice indeed Sunday lunch, lamb and beef, though I was disappointed with the roast potatoes so looses a star. A friendly pub with good service and a comfy interior. Shows footy on the screens and is popular on match days, but when in the back dining area this doesn't detract overly. Located two minutes walk from Highbury & Islington tube, if you go the right way.
c. p.
I moved to London around a year ago and initially lived near the Duchess of Kent. It very quickly became my local due to the friendly clientele and lovely staff especially the Manager, Karl who always gives me a welcoming wave every time I arrive. The food choice is exactly what you want for a hearty meal or even just a snack. The beer and spirits list is extensive with a good selection of wine as well. I've now moved away from the area but make regular visits back to my local, the Duchess!
O. C.
Great pub, lovely staff and fantastic service.
Couldn’t recommend more - nice to go to a pub that wants you to have a good time, rare to find in North London.
A. B.
Great pub for pre-Arsenal matches. Good amount of energy while not feeling over the top with the more obnoxious football fans at other pubs closer to the stadium. Should staff more servers on gameday or have rules around what can be ordered at which area to speed things up.
P. K.
Just left the place much more satiated, inebriated and entertained than I walked in, and that certainly spells success like nothing else! The food was pretty decent, the ales on tap amongst the best around (I had a Winter Warmer ale), the staff more than polite and friendly (Seb went above and beyond to ensure our order was right for us ) and the atmosphere cosy and really relaxing. My wife and I just spent what must have probably been the best evening out in the last couple of months! Spent a good 5 hours playing Scrabble non-stop! It might be a bit on the pricey side of things but you definitely get what you pay for ! Great work everyone, keep it up ! Will be reviewing on other websites soon. Highly recommended for a chill night out !
Panos
R. F.
Great spot for a pre-game burger and beer. We had the burger from the outside stall before the Arsenal v Bournemouth game and it was delish and reasonably priced. No photos this time. Sorry
T. S.
Fantastic place, great service, great food! Highly recommend for a pleasant night out with close friends. Honestly, don’t miss out, go!
T. R.
Great pub, I had the hallumi fries and the ox cheek nuggets and they were banging!
G. C.
Lovely local "Gastro" pub. It's a nice place to sit outside with a beer, but equally as nice inside in the dining room. They have a great section of beers, and the service is above average for a London pub.
M. P.
Nice pub, a short walk from Holloway Road. Good range of beers and food, if a little pricey. But about right compared to most decent Holloway pubs. A few tables outside to bask in the evening sun in the summer.
L. P.
Had a nice Saturday lunch with friends, quite quiet and relaxed feeling. Had a lovely lentil salad. Staff were quick to help out and friendly.
W. W.
Very nice service. Good selections of drinks and delicious food. Billy and Nelson been sweet and very attentive
M. W.
Great pub. Lovely food, excellent beer selection and friendly staff.
A cracking venue all round.
O.
Great local pub showing sports and good selection of beers. Food is great too, along with the friendly staff. Try the pies, full pastry pies, not a stew with a pastry top like other places.
A. M.
Very cute local pub in Highbury and Islington. While there will always be many to choose from, I like this one because it is a bit quieter and tucked away from the craziness of Upper St. They have also gone with a more cottage like decor. The prices are reasonable and the food is tasty
J. B.
Boho hipster hangout. Members of The Dead Zoo spotted after rehearsals too. Well recommended.
C. S.
Have been here multiple times, really wonderful pub, with really great food. Highly recommended!
R. M.
A fave for a sunny afternoon or evening! Great atmosphere, lovely food and Seb and the team are fab. Well worth a trip!
J. D. K.
Part of the Geronimo Inns chain which I find can be a bit hit and miss, but this one is a gem! Comfy pub serving good gastropub grub, with a great selection of beers and bar snacks including homemade scotch eggs and pork pies. Nice outside seating on the road and nearby bike racks for those of a cycling persuasion.
They show the football on mid-size screens, and being near the Emirates has a partisan crowd of Arsenal supporters when games are on. If you're going there on a match day it can get very busy, but as it's off the Holloway Road much more pleasant than some of the other pre-match pubs.
O.
Tasty food, great staff. Big party with some football lads in from a charity night having fun. A good local pub it seems.
S. H.
Amazing service and great food! Good atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. Can’t wait to visit again!
e. a.
Great cosy pub with comfortable seating. Really enjoy coming here. Food is fantastic :)
H. J.
Excellent service. Seb was fantastic, we loved his banter and shirt. Cosy pub with a great atmosphere. Check it out!!
E. C.
Lovely clean and very friendly pub with well served ales and tasty food at fair prices. A great atmosphere in this lovely pub and i would happily return very soon. Highly recommended.
J. D.
Lovely staff and a fantastic Sunday roast. Although they may run out of some dishes by the evening so definitely better to go for a Sunday lunch
S. M.
Nice spot, pricey pints
O. R.
Great spot, came for a lazy Saturday lunch and were very well looked after. Homemade pies on the menu are a highlight! Highly recommended
O. D.
Enjoyed the drinks and environment. Excellent service with food.
J. C.
A nice enough pub. Suffers when at capacity, focus on food means it feels like a pub with a restaurant at one side. Shows Gabe's but TVs are small and no sound.
U. B.
Nice and relaxed spot. Friendly service and good Sunday Roast.
M. H.
Top notch Sunday roast but horseradish in a Bloody Mary is a bit weird
P.
Lovely to be back. Great food. Friendly staff. Thank you.💗
A. D.
Great service and very good beer, food is awesome , super chilled , would definitely recommend for a long session !
A. D.
The Sunday Roast was absolutely delicious and I loved my elderflower gin and tonic! Located in a nice and peaceful area, too.
D. P.
Probably the best first and chips I have had in London. Seb our waiter was excellent. Best local in London
B. K.
Great burger - good selection of beer - friendly staff - outside seating - 10/10 would recommend
T. G.
Delicious food, great customer service and felt very well organised in terms of social distancing!
G. S.
Love this little pub tucked away from the crowd, Great food and staff, Busy on arsenal fc home games but always get served quickly, Try the fresh burgers on Match day
M. N.
- Nice gas fire and leather armchairs
- Pleasant outside area when it is sunny
- Pricey. Drinks start at £5 and bar snacks are not far off.
- Can be full of teachers...
A. G.
Great food in a comfy atmosphere
M. C.
Went prior to football match. Food was served outside from a barbecue. Best burger I've had in a long time and good selection of ales.
M. P.
Good food, Beavertown brewery beers on tap and easy service. Would recommend
R. M.
One of my favourite proper pub in London. Cosy, clean, calm, it's the perfect to have deep conversations with your friends around a great choice of drinks.
T. S.
A wonderful family pub with a great atmosphere and even better staff. Looks amazing after the refurbishment, highly recommended.
R. C.
Great pub, excellent service, friendly staff. Thanks for playing the Grand Final, go tigers!
T. M.
Erica was an absolute jet. Totally crushed it. If anything I’d get her to be less good at her job, just to avoid customers who happen to be in the same field feeling bad about themselves by comparison.
A. E.
Seb and the crew had us for Christmas Day and were absolutely amazing! Best service, best food ☺️ 100% recommend
t. m.
excellent pub and staff
C. L.
My husband and I bring all of our American visitors here for truly good pub food. Fish and chips and their pies are very good.

Good local pub with a nice relaxed atmosphere. Would recommend for a family/friends Sunday roast!
D. C.
The pub is nice. The staff need a little kick. Perhaps that's why it was only 20% full.
D. K.
Warm and quiet traditional pub with excellent food and an apparently relaxed attitude to owners' dogs. Recommended.

Good pub but high prices and a surprisingly wide bar limit options when it's busy
