Reviews of Fox & Anchor Pub

❤️ Historic London pub in a historic atmospheric part of London.
.
Going for a drink in and around Smithfield Market has to be one of the best pub crawls in London. The choice and quality of pubs on offer is simply amazing and all set within sight of Smithfield Market.
.
Today’s visit was to the @foxandanchorec1 and it didn’t disappoint. The pub is easy to get to and just a short walk from either Farringdon or Barbican tube stations. On arrival I just marvelled at the architecture of the building, it’s just so beautiful, unique and detailed. As you enter, the bar is situated on the left hand side with seating down the right hand side, the box seat in here is at the back where there are three cosy booths with stained glass and candle lit which makes for an intimate experience. The decor is traditional with dark wood panelling, dark green wallpaper and sofas plus lots of artwork celebrating the area’s history. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pub was fairly busy. My pint was decent and the menu here is meaty with cuts supplied from across the street from the market. The pub has a market license, so if you fancy a 7am pint with your breakfast your in luck. This pub also has accommodation in the form of six boutique rooms, I have seen a number of pubs diversifying their offering to include accommodation and the reviews here are very good.
.
This @youngspub establishment is a excellent hostelry which offers its punters a great choice of food and drinks , they also offer a traditional pub experience with a modern twist. This is a must visit London pub.

This is an excellent pub right near The Charterhouse and Smithfield market. It's not too far from St. Paul's. It's certainly worth a visit if touring around the area. There are some fantastic pubs in the area away from the main tourists ones near St. Paul's and this is definitely on the list. We had stopped by on a pub crawl in the area and really liked the building and also the fact it was off the beaten track. I would come back for a pint or few next time I'm in the area.
P. L. R.
Excellent pub, great food, small and intimate dining room with snugs, and a good little bar. One of the best.
T. H.
Lovely pub. Great atmosphere, good drinks on offer and the food was great (I had the burger and chips). Enjoyed the company of regular patron Alan (who has the best stories and is an absolute legend) and the arrival of a dog was the icing on the cake. Would like to highlight the service from the wonderful Erika and Agne who made me feel very welcome and were both very helpful. Would definitely go back again!
J. M.
The rooms here are beautiful, the team are so welcoming, especially Daniel who made us feel like VIPs for being there for our wedding. Food is delicious, location is perfect.

We've stayed twice and wouldn't stay anywhere else in London. Rooms feel really luxurious with everything you'd expect from a top end hotel - safe, mini-bar, dressing gowns, tea and coffee. Bed was really comfy, lots of hot water for the beautiful bath and shower. But best of all, really quiet even in Central London. We had the 2 nights stay, breakfast, a 3 course evening meal and free gins - an absolute bargain!! And all the staff are lovely. Can't recommend highly enough.

We enjoyed a lovely weekend at this traditional historic London pub, which serves the famous Smithfield Market, located across the road. As a result of this, it's Sunday roasts are a fantastic advert for Smithfield's produce. They are extremely worthy of gastro pub fare.
Entering the pub you walk into a cosy wooden bar, which displays some fine local and guest ales, supplemented by a fine array of spirits and wines. Situated to the rear are cosy private wood panelled booths.
Upstairs there is the hotel, comprising six well appointed boutique rooms, one being a suite. Luxuriating in a full length roll top bath adds to each rooms ambience and charm. Mini bars and fine tea and Nespresso coffee also add an indulgent touch.
A totally relaxing experience, finished by brilliant staff, who truly excel in customer service. Special mention must be made for Erica and Sunny who are phenomenal, an expression I don't use lightly.
Massive thumbs up to The Fox and Anchor!

Great steaks! Came yesterday again, the meat is outstanding, the ales & wines and service too. A legendary local pub.
R. N.
A genuine hidden gem of a pub. Friendly staff, delicious food, cozy and comfortable room, and a fantastic location. Couldn't ask for more! Will definitely be staying here the next time we're in London.
S. F.
lovely little pub.
was quite full when we went so had to be seated near the doors, but still lvoed the atmosphere
s. d.
Ok Sunday lunch. But pricey for a pub at £60.00 for 2 (1 course + a glass of wine each. Had run out of Eaton mess, coffee machine broken , so no coffee. Service pleasant but slow. Light levels a bit low. Gents smelt strongly of pee, could do with a clean. Need to do a bit better to justify the price.
A. T.
Cosy atmosphere for a winter's afternoon. Staff made us very welcome. Good menu and great service.
P. H.
Superb for breakfast. The eggs Angus were tremendous. Would like to have space for the massive breakfast.
M. B.
The food was absolutely delicious, the staff were attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly, the environment was cosy without being cramped, and the prices were extremely reasonable. I wouldn't hesitate to have lunch here again, and recommend it enthusiastically!
S. J.
Cosy spaces and good, open, front of bar seating. Had an excellent meal and ales. Very friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. Not my first time here, won't be my last. Recommended if you like a traditional old pub that isn't old fashioned.
A. C. C.
Nice traditional English pub. Nice staff, good food. I loved the small rooms for small groups in the back.
P.
Our weekend stay was a belated 30th Anniversary treat and it certainly was a wonderful stay.
We stayed in St.Pauls room, with a beautiful roll top copper bath and lovely complimentary toiletries .
The breakfast was delicious and above all, the staff were super friendly, welcoming and helpful.
Thank you Fox & Anchor for a great stay !
J. P.
All very well, a very good English breakfast, spend a morning with friends and I must say that it is a great place to have breakfast, I highly recommend it.
R. W.
Amazing pub & hotel! The rooms are really comfortable and very nicely designed. The pub itself is really nice too with a great menu. We felt very welcome by the staff who did everything to accommodate our early arrival after a long flight and were very helpful throughout the visit.
P. T.
What a find! I used to work nearby and with all the newfangled arty drink houses spreading everywhere, the Fox has kept the same atmosphere and friendly vibe as it had ten years ago. Of course the staff are now far better too. Though apparently saying that won't get you a free pint.
Absolutely love this place and definitely worth a visit - great reminder of good old fashioned London charm.
R.
I absolutely love this pub, my first pub in London and I absolutely love it, will have to return when I get the chance, super friendly staff work here but there’s one staff member that stood out but I didn’t get his name but I remember his cockney accent, he’s an excellent member of the team and he made my first visit a memorable one and the food was sensational too
J. H.
A wonderfully traditional English pub that serves fantastic food - I can really recommend the Sunday roast
C. n.
I booked one night there thinking it was an hotel, and once arrived, after one moment of surprise, i really enjoyed the place: nice pub with great choices of wine and beer, the room was great and you don t hear at all the noise from the pub (was on the last floor), and the breakfast perfect. A place to go for sure!
D. T.
This pub should be haunted, not sure by who. It is delightful, a bit dark but wonderful, wander down to the back to see the rooms there. Staff are wonderful and look after you. A special place.
A. T.
A nice pub with great character, and very good Sunday lunch, tucked away partly out of view
M. W.
Now this is more than a 5. Superb pub food like no other, great service. I'd drive down from up north just to eat here. Fantastic
B. N.
Great food, very good beer and excellent service. The ambience feels very comfortable and has that warm wooden touch.
J. C.
Erica and Daniel were brilliant, came in the morning for a pint after work and had a great experience.
R. W.
Great little English pub. Only had a pint of Guinness but was enjoyable place to have one. Food is also available and seems to be a nice boutique hotel. Go check it out.
B. D.
fantastic, brilliant service lovely bar made gave me a barrel glass to enjoy my proper job pint. i really appreciated this , so I highly recommend this tavern one of the best in London cheers
O. T.
Fantastic room. Copper bath was a particular highlight
K. G.
Beautiful Booths to have a "private" moments!!!
Not busy on breakfast time which I like.
K. P.
Real gem deep inside the City of London! Fox and Anchor is a wonderful and atmospheric pub with a gorgeous Art Nouveau facade, equally beautiful interiors and good selection of food and drinks. It’s never too busy, so if you’re up for a quiet table or lunch with your phone or laptop - it’s a good option most of the time.
A. W.
The breakfast was delicious and good service. Had an amazing G&T after working night shift.
Z. R.
Excellent pub, great decor and good selection of drinks
G. E.
Great traditional London pub, pretty quiet on the weekends. If you're peckish, try the scotch eggs and sausage rolls which are incredible.
j. w.
Good beer, friendly staff, nice interior. Menu looks good but didn't eat.
G. L.
Nice old pub with a good atmosphere and nice to be able to spill out onto the street.
D. V.
Very British. They're also very kind. It's connected with a pub, probably raccomamded for younger people (at least inside!)
M. K.
It was interesting to have guiness for breakfast. Very friendly service.
D. S.
Good food and beer. I thought it a tad pricey... but that's London
P. S.
Beautiful cozy pub, lovely place to sit.
V. P.
We just had our monthly office breakfast here. The Full Monty was amazing! Especially the black and white puddings. Great coffee. Really lovely service. We ended up having 9 people rather than the 8 that we booked. They could not have been more accommodating. Just calmly found a more suitable table.
A.
Had the full monty breakfast - always great food and service. Looked after me and my guest very well during these uncertain times! Also great for lunch and a pint or four!! Go visit and enjoy!
L. D.
Good boutique hotel with amazing large clawfoot bathtub, as well as a separate walk in shower. Room service is available. You will hear the sounds of trash collection at night and the pub below and I was habitually awoken at 3 am by the trash. However I recognise the hotel is not to blame, that's just London! If staying in the rooms above there is a separate entrance however you will still have to wind your way through the pub crowd stationed outside. The food was also great, I recommend the mac and cheese scotch egg!
J. M.
Good spot for supper with a couple pints of beer or ale. Sunday roast was excellent, served with ample veggies, mashed turnip, potatoes, gravy, & Yorkshire pudding. 16-20£. Dessert — apple and cranberry crumble with a bit of custard on the side — was ok. About 8 different brews on tap; the Wimbledon Copper Leaf Ale was delicious and smooth. It's a cozy little place in a tight but homey way. Table that I was seated at served a sewing machine in an earlier life. Servers were commendable.
I. M.
A warm and inviting pub in Farringdon. It has lots of old world charm and their sausage rolls and pork pies are wonderful.
M. J.
Only went to the bar. perfect for morning drinking and hanging out with the butchers. Very friendly staff and cool location
E. R.
High quality food and drink in a wonderfully atmospheric old fashioned old pub.
Good friendly service as well. Good place.
P. W.
looking for a nice little original pub? this is a gem! had a pint or maybe two and found out they do breakfast. so booked a table and would recommend to anyone! food is great and the place is a true find. loved it.
R. J.
Great early house. Fantastic food, lovely staff and cosy atmosphere. Good start to our day!
D. M.
A beautiful gem of a pub with friendly staff, good beers and good food
C. S.
Just had a pint of Guinness and a burger and chips from here and oh my days the food is top quality. Super full now and next time I'm in the area I'll definitely be making a visit.
S. H.
Just had Gypsy eggs; wonderful.
R. C.
Had a great breakfast here. The staff were lovely and the food was unbelievable. My only downside would’ve been it was quite quiet and the management were having a meeting a couple of tables away and without music playing loud enough you could hear everything being said. All in All though it didn’t affect our stay here as the food and service were amazing
M. B.
A small but lovely pub. Great staff. Food in the restaurant area was excellent on my visit. Rooms are nice and clean. Some noise from other rooms and nearby Smithfield market but, given the age of the building, I doubt this can be helped.
J. T.
A lovely old pub and the food was great. But it was very hard to book - I tried on line but did not get any confirmation. I called 8 times but no one answered the phone - so I had to visit to book. On the night it was a bit short staffed and several items on the menu were not available (one of my guests was so frustrated that none of his menu choices were available that he left) and there was a very limited choice of port/dessert wine. I think we drank the last bottle.
G.
Been here on many occasions. Changed hands a few times but still a great place to drink. An amazing amount of different drinks available and very friendly staff. It's not the biggest pub but I love it
L. D.
Just slightly off the beaten track, quite a narrow bar with a great selection of beers and drinks. Saw some customers eating some nice looking food relatively late into the evening. Nice place, would go again
N. B.
An excellent British pub
Great selection of real cask ales and friendly knowledgeable staff.
Not tried the food but it looks excellent, the bar area can be a little crowded but its nice outside and there are enough tables to sit at inside. Worth a visit
A. T.
Super little pub with cosy dining room. Great food and friendly staff.
C. E.
Small pub with great atmosphere. Food was good.
g. m.
Food was good. Unfortunately, we had to wait for 20 minutes before being served with no so many people around, and the price was definitely on the high range. Wouldn't recommend.
S. M.
Great place to stay and to eat. Staff is warm and helpful. Food and drinks were great too. Would happily stay here again.
S. G.
Cozy pub with great food, a good beer selection and extremely friendly and helpful staff.
J. K.
Nice pub with a classic tidy wooden feel to it. Food was very tasty, but portions a bit small. Cracking beer.
C. M.
Reviews as the hotel but I'm reviewing the pub. Third time having breakfast here and can safely say its world class. Not surprisingly the meat is excellent but that the quality continues through the plate. Staff are on the ball too. And the fact that it's an early house adds to the allure.
c. d.
What a spot!! Fabulous room, amazing bath and great service!!
W. J. P. K.
Nice cosy relaxed place. Typical old wood panelled pub with nice atmosphere. Food was good and prices avatar for The City. They serve Doom Bar which is a bonus!
P.
Lovely helpful bar staff, decent pint, nice decor. It's a good pub.
L. M.
Nice Pub nice female staff good service just cold food...Staff Apologised...Will revisit
M. R.
An excellent pub which has superb food. Tucked away off the the main road it is well worth a visit for drinks and food. They sometimes show rugby as well. Very popular. A real gem.
K. H.
Lovely little pub, good choice of beers and the food was spot on.
D. C.
Interesting interior with lots of nooks and crannies. Beer was ok too.
D. L.
Great English pub atmosphere and great fish and chips... best I've had in London for some time.
S. A.
A great place for breakfast, that is if you can get in the door! Not surprisingly, because of their vicinity to the meat market, their Sunday Roasts are top notch.
R. T.
Good location, interesting place, tasty breakfast, helpful staff, good night's sleep but lot of stairs to 'penthouse'.See you next year though.
J. W.
Gastropub pub with character. Attentive and efficient staff. We were there for Christmas Eve with some foreign guests - the place had a warm and welcoming ambience, attentive staff and impeccable service
R. I. M.
Wonderful pub, Wonderful staff. Very helpful. Came in with a group of 14 people and they made life very easy. Thank you.
g. b.
Great hidden gem. Stayed for a long weekend. Lovely room. Staff are friendly and helpful. Just a few finishing touches for one more star. Highly recommended though. Will stay again.
J. S.
We went just for breakfast on our way home from borough market. Excellent food, reasonably priced. we have also stayed in the hotel around 5 years ago and would definitely recommend.
l. w.
Nice pub and a great lunch. Would go back if near by again.
J. B.
I had a great dinner here. Food very tasty. Cozy vibe. All staff very friendly. Bar good too. Was surprised to learn they have rooms. They looked well appointed. I Would very much consider as cool place to stay if gay friendly policy for guests.
B.
Nice old school pub (definitely worth a visit to experience a historic English pub) down a quiet street. Good ales
A. M.
Great pub with delicious food and a nice atmosphere to chill out after work.
B. C.
Beautiful decor and great choice of drinks. A little on the expensive side.
L. N.
Nice atmosphere of an old pub! Crowded on a Friday afternoon but it's a good option to feel the local spirit. The food was good, the stuff friendly!
D. D.
A very nice pub with tones of old time charm. Seems like the type of place that hasn't changed in 100 years.
R. C.
A most excellent pub, great beer and food, well worth the money, but the stand out part is the care they take of your visit -warm, welcoming, with great service.
S. d.
went there during a pub tour and loved it. they say it is the best breakfast in town (but you might want to book before)
C. J.
Decent pub, good beer selection, cracking interior, but customer service is on the poor side. Noy very friendly, no smiles, no chatting, etc just surly staff.
R. C.
Great booths at the back for dining, food and service of a high standard. Not as bespoke in the beer department as some, but a good choice for a meal
S. R.
Beautiful pub with decor to marvel at. Serves interesting beers and a fantastic looking menu. A shame that there wasn't a veggie option as that would have made it much better. Usually has a very calm atmosphere
j. s.
Such a great place to meet up for food and drinks, was recommended to me, friendly staff, will visit again
B. M.
Great pub, pity about the Sunday lunch when pork pies and sausage rolls at the bar are super.
M. H.
Love this pub for breakfast, it is open early due to it's position near the market allowing you to get breakfast and a pint.
Food is very good.
D. B.
Nice old fashioned pub with great food
S. M.
Great service and super friendly staff. They really know the drinks and spirits and mixers. This is a great place for just a quiet drink or a private party. The bar snacks are amazing and they also do remarkable food.
B. O.
The food was absolutely delicious, and our waiter was really sweet and nice. Honestly a great way to spend our last night in London.
D. M.
This is now getting a bit strange. I said I'm not really a pub person in previous review, and just lately, i find myself in pubs, hahaha.
Anyway, this pub is small but big on character. By that i mean, it's really old fashioned. Gem of a building. I was chatting with the bar staff who informed me it's a listed building. So nice to go to a pub like this, and not your run of the mill modern bar's. And you can get nice food to.
Friendly staff.
C. O.
Lovely pub lovely staff.
c. m.
Quiet and cosy pub near the city, nice outdoor seating and good drinks selection was perfect for a warm sunday afternoon
C.
We had our big annual family lunch here and had a brilliant time. Felt very well accommodated and the food was very timely, especially for 12 people!
Sometimes neglected for drinks orders so we had to go up to the bar several times, but it seemed there was only two staff working in a full pub so it was understandable.
Roast pork belly was delicious, some of the best crackling I've ever had! Unfortunately some of the vegetarian dishes didn't go down so well on our table, but the roasts and burgers got high reviews.
Thank you for a great lunch :)
G. S.
Went on Sunday early so very quiet. A Young's pub so the beer was excellent.
O. J.
A traditional looking pub with a fantastic selection of craft beer and a neigbouring cocktail bar. Great for after work drinks.
S. S.
A precious little gastropub in the City with fresh amazing food.
J. T.
Cozy pub with great food. Not too expensive for the location.
L. G.
What a lovely busy and thriving pub with character. Helpful and efficient staff, really festive and welcoming.
C.
Food tastes great and service is good. Lovely venue and lots of different areas and rooms to move around in. Good for group bookings too.
S. M.
Food is very good. But you need to know how to get around in a crowd when the sun goes down!
P. A.
Traditional pub with a good real ale selection and hearty food.
K. M.
Beautifully kept up market heritage pub. Decent selection of beers and gastro menu.
W. v. d. P.
Lovely place and the sister cocktail bar next door is also excellent
B. R.
Great little pub. Very traditional. Quite narrow, so tricky to access loos etc. Whilst busy.
S. P.
Attentive, friendly and pleasant staff. Had city boys breakfast, all served well and enjoyed the ambience for 5h. Great pub, come here to try the signature breakfast
D.
Nice friendly pub in London's Smithfield market area serving a great selection of real ales lagers spirits and wines
A. R.
really nice food and a good choice. Great beer too
T. G.
The beer was good and it's a cosy traditional London pub
A. M.
Lovely traditional pub. Beautiful exterior with fox sculptures.
M. A.
Excellent food, drinks and atmosphere. The inside of the pub is a little cramped, but nice pub to stand outside on a summer evening and drink real ale.
S. L.
Great, traditional London pub. Good food and friendly staff.
N. P. M.
Love this pub. Friendly service and food is magnificent!
J. W.
Great atmosphere in a traditional pub. Selections of beer are good. Must see if you like pubs.
J. C.
Good beer ok food. Fish and chips just ok.
D.
An iconic venue that is been there since the latest 17th century, if you want to try good tradicional British food this is the place, they also have an amazing seleccion of local ales as well as a very friendly and well mannered bar team.
S. W.
One Young's best pubs. Wonderful architectural detailed interior, a bit off the beaten track so not too crowded.
M.
Beautiful old pub, great service and the best burger i've had in years.
L. H.
Lovely pub with great service. Cozy hotel rooms.
I. D.
Nice cosy old world style pub. Small selection of ales. Has a restaurant section but didn't see that area. Open late at the weekend where other pubs of this size are likely to close early in this area.
C. R.
Gorgeous decor and decent beer, although a little pricey and there's not a lot of room on busy nights. Really classic pub feel. No loud music, but they do have TVs on (without sound) unfortunately.
D. G.
Very pretty pub in a lovely hidden corner of the city. The place is a little gem. One important warning: Service is arguably the slowest on earth. Bartenders have you waiting for ever, don't acknowledge your presence, disappear for a while and - if you are lucky - maybe they serve you.
M. S.
We always come here for our Christmas lunch and as always the food and service was brilliant.. Keep up the great work.
P. K.
Great Pub, superb food, and great atmosphere and and surroundings, highly recommend.
t. e.
Excellent Bar Staff all very attentive and know whos next to be served which is very rare. Great retention of original features, a proper original london pub. Highly enjoyed my beer and the atmosphere. Top notch.
D. W.
Nice enough pub. Not a great selection of beers.
N. L.
Fantastic pub and boutique hotel. Will be back soon!
M. T.
Very nice atmosphere, nice staff. Only downside is that it can get a little crowded
N. C.
Had a delicious Sunday roast! Great selection of drinks, atmosphere was comfortable and cosy and the customer service was by far, the best we'd had from anywhere in London!
E. W.
This little gem is possibly one of the nicest pubs I've ever found in London. Lovely staff, good choice of beer and wine, excellent food and a fabulous atmosphere. There are a few rooms too and this is the first time I've stayed...absolutely lovely, well worth a visit to London just to stay here!
B. W.
Good meeting place near the Barbican. Remember this pub when the meat market was 'buzzing' in the late 70's early '80's and it was great. Good food with bloodied meat market guys sitting next to city gents. Now it is gentrified. Still worth a visit.
Just edited this as on reflection 3* was harsh and worth four stars for range of drinks and location if nothing else.
P. C.
Nice pub. Very good Sunday lunch.
M. B. K.
The service was a bit slow but the food and drinks was great!
G. B.
Great traditional pub with good beer and food.
D. R.
Great little pub hidden away from the riff raff. Super food and the landlord knows how to look after his ale. Beers in tankard was a nice touch.
A. S.
A pretty pub, but unremarkable. Average beer selection, and few places to sit
M. M.
Lovely old pub with good atmosphere
D. T.
Nice cosy pub in quiet part of town
F. W.
Really lovely pub! Very nice staff
J. T.
Enjoyable. Pleasant service even when too popular and crowded for its own good but that was at Xmas time.
J. S.
Amazing food. Breakfast is great. Best things are the scotch eggs and sausage rolls though.
E. C.
Gorgeous old school pub. Full of character with good wine and tasty sausage rolls for bar snacks. Also does full meals in the back. Popular after work.
V.
Great atmosphere, polite staff and good beer.
S. B.
Excellent Sunday lunch. Lovely old fashioned English pub in the heart of London
D. O.
Stopped in here after being to see the Dolphins v Saints at Wembley, around the corner from Malmaison hotel, the food in this place was amazing. I can't recommend it more highly, the lamb shank pie was so delicious, I'm salavating now just writing the review, not to expensive and good choice of drinks and staff very friendly too
M. G.
Decent enough breakfast. Beer selection rather limited. Head over to the Brewdog for beer. If it's later in the day, you can get good food at St John's.
S. M.
We came for the (devastating) Eng v Fra rugby game, on a Sunday. Great bunch of team in a wonderful looking pub.
Good drink and food quality, would definitely return!
S. K.
Good variety of British pub food + good beer.
S. J.
Always a good beer or two on, excellent food both breakfast and lunch. Friendly staff and the best pork scratchings in London town.
M. P.
Tom and the staff and super efficient just a great location and food for both business and social meets
H. T.
Great London pub which retains its heritage and feel. Good choice of beers, good service, and good food. Nice standing out in the sun when the weather plays nice too.
D. N.
Incredibly friendly staff. Quick service. They were doing a bit of maintenance but it didn't detract from our experiences.
M. K.
Stayed in the market room. It was spacious and really really nice. The record player was a good touch! Breakfast in the morning is filling and well cooked as well
l. n.
Small pub with great food and atmosphere
G. A.
Tasty dinner, friendly service and positive vibe. Recommend!
E. B.
Nice, pub that feels like a proper pub. Nothing stands out though. Average.
J. R. M.
Good beer and had a very nice sandwich
A. Y.
Excellent food, good value, scotch eggs were amazing
T. T.
Excellent selection of beer and good place for quiet meeting.
K. K.
Lovely London pub with good atmosphere, selection of beers and particularly tasty sausage rolls. But bar staff were a bit grumpy!
R. D.
Very nice pub - heaving at times, but check out the back room - nice sausage + mash too!
Z.
Buzzy small old world pub located not far from Farringdon station. Came here for Xmas meal and enjoyed the little room we sat in. Great smiling and friendly service.
A. W.
Warm friendly staff but left feeling hungry and I describe myself as a moderate eater.
H. H.
Small London pub with good character and popular with locals. Not extensive beer selection hut decent enough.
R. B.
Good food good beer friendly helpful
P. W.
Had sunday lunch here, great food and beer/wine, friendly staff
A. G.
Great staff and charming olde pub venue. Weird toilet layout though with a saloon doored single urinal room
J.
Any bar that is open as early as this one is a winner in my book. Not the cheapest bar but an eclectic mix of customers from lads off smithfield market to ladies and gents suited n booted having breakfasts.
A. M.
Flawless! It features the typical living room feeling you get in most pubs and is very cosy. At the back there are some super cute little rooms, but unfortunately you need to book to sit there. The food was great, I had a great pie. The staff was prompt and cheerful.
S. B.
Traditional pub but nicely 'polished' and comfortable - food good for a pub
K. F. L.
Great place for pint of beer and excellent to stay for night.
K. R.
Delicious food, good selection of beers
P. K.
Nice interior and a food with a gastronomic touch. I like the neighborhood very much.
A. K.
Wonderful food but service could have been quicker.
r. k.
Service was super slow even though it was breakfast. The food was great though
A. W. M.
Quirky pub with good beer - also serves food.
H. P.
Quick service with friendly staff, but was pretty much dead so lacked atmosphere. Probably because it was a Sunday. I think the majority of the crowd are either hotel guests or people who've got lost after going to the barbican. Perfectly servicable for a quiet drink though, and not over expensive.
M. D.
Fabulous old London Pub. Been renovated. Typical of its type; dark, warm and welcoming.
H. C.
Nice, classic pub. Good ales on tap.
M. G.
Reserved a table, excellent service and good pub food
A. W.
Good pub food and full range of Young's beers. Ask for one of the 'snugs' at the rear if you are a party of 4.
D. G.
very cold inside as the main doors were open. food ok. reasonable prices
D.
Cosy atmosphere. Decent selection of wines and beers with a good plate sharing menu. Old fashioned (in a goog way) amidst in a place not expected, trendy clerkenwell
T. P.
Amazing interior, a tasty selection of draughts and lovely staff
B. Y.
Great service. Good food and warm atmosphere.
d. h.
Good drinks great food
A. S.
Good beers and the food is excellent. The Scotch eggs are to die for. Can get a little bit cramped by the bar as the passage is narrow but once you have a table you won't want to leave.
G. M.
Interesting old 'boozer' next to Spitalfields meat market.
We were hoping to get a traditional porters' breakfast but what we got was an over-cooked mixed grill. Shame really as the building itself looked promising.
C. W.
Simply awesome food, exeptional ales ... one of the greatest pubs in London. Period.
V. B.
Good selection of beers. Bar staff are friendly.
C. S.
Decoration of the room is amazing, lots of vintage stuff with good taste for a comfy and cosy atmosphere. Service is really nice and welcoming. Location by the market makes it a slightly noisy place to stay. Ask for a room on the opposite side to street and market. I missed an hair dryer in the bathroom, a bit cleaner bathroom and one lamp was not working but an overall good expérience for a one-night stay.
m. c.
First class experience in every respect - quirky boutique meeting facility; flexible; great quality lunch; kind and courteous staff; reasonably priced; extremely well appreciated by overseas visitors and remote participants from USA - we will certainly be returning for both professional and personal functions. Excellent! You could actually live happily as an eccentric bohemian London recluse type while NEVER stepping beyond the threshold of the Fox & Anchor!
G. H.
Sunday lunch was fantastic. The pub is in a great location for an interesting walk with Smithfield Market, medieval church and almshouses buildings nearby.
The staff were welcoming and friendly throughout, joking that I didn't like it when looking at my completely empty plate.
We both had the Sunday roast, as well as the great meat, roasts and Yorkshire the veg was lovely being fresh and tasty.
The beer and wine were also very good.
The fruit Bakewell tart with clotted cream rounded off a lovely meal.
F. H.
fine food and a proper pub!!!
J. L.
Really good place - quite expensive but has a good atmosphere
A. S.
Good private seating area. Good service with decent food at prices that are OK for where it is.
A. W.
Great dinner and good sevice
D. H.
Traditional English Pub with friendly atmosphere and good range of beers and wines to choose from.
S. T.
One of my fave London pubs, good to visit on a weekend but the area is calm. The atmospheric cosy nooks in the back room would be great to take tourists there. Their scotch eggs are amazing too.
e. h.
Great pub, reasonable prices with good decor
K. C.
Nice authentic London pub. Opened in 1898 and has the feel of it too. Creaky wooden interior which makes you feel like history is all around you.
A. L.
Stellar early morning breakfast with a pint of stout. You wouldn't do it every day but it is so good! Go for the big breakfast - worth every penny.
S. S.
A lot smaller than I expected and quite dingy on a bright summer day. Would be lovely in winter though, and staff were nice.
J. J.
Absolutely Brilliant. We had The Market room, perfect in every way
B. P.
Wow. What a find. Uber cool gin bar. Old style London gin boozer, updated to modern metro cool. Had guest rooms which look amazing.
H. W.
Disturbingly quiet and gloomy. Shame - good beer and atmospheric. Deserves better, esp the small booth rooms in the back
c. s.
Great service quite friendly, nice 🍺 on tap
T. P.
Great beer, lovely service and good breakfasts.
L. G.
We were a big group of 12 and the service was amazing and relaxed - really great for big groups would recommend.
K. B.
Cozy and quiet on a Sunday evening! Good selection of real ale. would return!
S. “. L.
Seemed like a lovely place, but at Christmas, it was super packed and rather claustrophobic. Beer was just fine!
T. C.
Great wood panelled space with an awesome booth in the dining area. Whilst the food looks great on the menu, it's slightly let down by the execution given its current price.
A. C.
The Fox and Anchor is an absolute gem of a pub. Traditional styling and with a great selection of beers, lovely food and friendly staff. The best thing however are the small private booths at the back, worth booking in advance.
E. B.
A great place for ac7am pint of Guinness, not many left on the market now.
S. G.
Gorgeous food, excellent service.
J. M.
Nice enough food just not great.
B. S.
Nice looking bar with a good selection of craft beer
a. b.
A real gem of London. If I'm in the Farringdon/Barbican area this is my absolute 'go to' pub. Long, narrow & fantastically welcoming. You can smell the history of the place as soon as you walk in the door. Wooden shuttered booths at the back of the bar just add to the atmosphere. Havent spent the whole day here yet but I'm working on it.
S. B.
Awesome range of beer, served in tankards and the best sausage rolls EVER! What is not to like. A buzzy beery bustin place!
P. B.
Well kept beer, great pub to meet and talk with friends.
S. D.
Cosy pub with a good beer selection
S. D.
Warm friendly, loved the period features and the pace of life in thr bar. Hidden treasure in a bustling London
W. B.
An Xmas breakfast and a couple of pints of Guinness. What more can you want a couple of weeks from Xmas. Open from 7am, the staff are happy to help and provide a great service to everyone at an early hour. Book in advance in the run up to Xmas to secure your table.
J. H.
Great staff, great food.
D. A.
Good traditional pub, not overcrowded.
L. L.
Incredible vegetarian dish. Very attentive staff, really great.
N. J.
A touch on the expensive side, and kinda slow service, but overall good.
P. M.
A nice cosy old school boozer
M. S.
Great selection of drinks and nice atmosphere
P. M.
Great London pub with traditional food and local ale all served in a timely and relaxed atmosphere. Recommend the scotch egg and roast belly pork and crackling. The Camden on tap was my pick of the ale.
B. A.
Brilliant Hospitality and a Great Group Lunch
J. K.
Great British gastropub in the center of London. Sizable Burgers with some of the freshest meat you can find around, authentic British food such as scotch eggs, and good imported beers on tap.
D. G.
Nice Pub with good food
N. M.
One of my favourite pubs in London....shhhh
T. B.
The pub is atmospheric and cozy. The drinks are fairly expensive but about what you would expect for London.
L. B.
Great service, great food, wonderful atmosphere
L. K.
Friendly staff, good beer.
L. E.
Excellent pub with a really traditional feel!
A.
Quite a cool, old pub with rabbit and hare themes throughout
L. H.
Got the last roast dinner on Sunday. Had a lovely soup to start and then an ample roast beef. Plenty of gravy and the veg were buttered and tasty.
J. S.
It's usually fine for a drink when in the area.
P. E.
Friendly atmosphere. Good variety of real ales.
P. M.
Great breakfast, great pint and great servicr
K. T.
Friendly and great food.
N. P.
Great beers and opens at 7am for breakfast and guiness.
R. B.
Small pub. Friendly place.has limited seating
J. F.
Great accommodation, great beer and great pie. Lovely stuff.
A. D.
This is a gorgeous pub with what seems like many original features, lots of snugs still even with their doors, wonderful! We had the Sunday lunch and it was delicious, will certainly return for that. Located off the beaten track in an area thats quieter at weekends, so nice and quiet for our lunch. Located between Smithfield Market and Charterhouse Square, the pub is as full of intersting history as the atea it's in.
U. C.
A beautiful public house that instantly takes you back a 100 years. The quaint old telephone. The oak-panelled walls. That antique-tiled fireplace. And oh, the warm and cushy Fox's Lare. Walk-in for some amazing Scotch-eggs, meat-pies and good old ale. A stone's throw from Charterhouse Square, near Barbican Tube station.
I. S.
Vestry ideal for groups, food could be a little better but good Camden ales
S. H.
Ambiance: 5; Food: 4 (lamb pie was nice, Scotch eggs ok); Beverages: 4 (could use more craft taps/kegs)
R. M. M.
Fantastic breakfast - gypsy eggs. Brilliant food.
D. L.
Nice and cosy pub.
H. C.
had a lovely Christmas dinner - their lamb shank pie looks a treat!
C. J.
Relaxed and cozy pub, with good Guinness.
N. G.
Great selection of Ales, excellent nibbles (pork scratchings and scotch eggs) and food. The rooms are all uniquely furnished with comfy beds (tried 2 rooms) but with poor plumbing.
M. R.
Very stylish and full of character. Delicious coffee and very very cool staff! :)
C. L.
Good Sunday lunch, English Breakfast was small for what you pay. Was miffed to get only half a piece of black pudding. Surely serving a whole slice won't dent profits that much.
J. J.
Not much space to stand if seats are taken but a decent pub and is open on Sundays
c.
6 room bnb over pub, friendly staff, i stay here every business trip
K. G.
Popped into the Fox and Anchor after hearing about their 'City boy' breakfast. Had just finished night shift and couldn't wait to get there. After ordering my pint of Guiness was served and good pint too. Then the breakfast came out....oh yes it smelled delicious. It had the usual stuff but it also had an ingot steak, liver and pork and leek sausages. The only grumble and it is a small grumble is that the fried toast was not to my liking...very crunchy. All in all i will be back with the rest of the nightshift 👍
J. N.
Good food, great service
J. H.
Bags of atmosphere, original features. Some nice brews on tap, but can get cramped given the narrow layout.
S. B.
Tasty burger, OK selection of beers.
E. B.
Lovely breakfast, despite a few mistakes but they were dealt with well!
C. C.
High quality service and food
C. S. R.
Nice wood panelling but bar is too small and cramped as it's always rammed (which doesn't take many to achieve).
R. P.
Great for an early morning pint
G. C.
Good atmosphere, good beer
T. H.
Excellent pub off charterhouse. Only downfall is space as it's so busy. Cracking sausage roll recommend. Camden pale as the handpulls can be touch and go
I. C.
Good place for an after work pint
A. M.
Very cosy place... nice combination of traditional and contemporary...
M. J.
Impressive pub with good beer
D.
Upgrading a previous review! Came over the bank holiday weekend with the in-laws and our toddler, having been to the barbican. Staff here are very accomodating and although over crowded during the week, making the thin bar less inviting than could be, it's a popular spot for a reason! Recommend a trip during the weekend to skip the city crowd. Historic bar, good beer and excellent food options (including bar snacks).
B. A.
In the early house for a couple of morning drinks. Lacking options on the pump but ver accommodating
B.
Great breakfast spot, unique interiors.
K. H.
Great old fashion pub
M. W.
We come here for their excellent English breakfast everytime we're in London. One of the few spots you can have a Guiness at 8:00 AM :).
The morning buzz around Smithfield Market dds to the amosphere of the neighborhood.
A. B.
On arrival there were six cask ales at the bar: after tasting my way through some well-kept beers, the barman reached, without prompting, for a pewter tankard suspended above the bar. I looked around hesitantly, wondering if there might be any bar snacks on offer. I should not have worried: homemade, gnarly little pork scratchings, served with a dish of mustard, soft, yielding scotch eggs and lightly spiced pork pies with crisp pastry all came back to our table. Lesser pubs should take note: this is how it is done.
A. E.
Excellent chips, but I wouldn't go as far as claiming they're the best in London. The fish, chips and mushy peas seemed well priced given the quality at £14, but the pies seem a poor choice, given they're slightly pricier, and come without accompanyments. Bonus marks for serving beer in pewter tankards, however.
I. H.
Lovely place, great people.
P. P.
Expensive drinks, but the bartenders were very friendly
S. E.
Fresh good, lovely atmosphere!

Beautiful old pub
A. W.
Modern refurb of a traditional Londom boozer. Small and perfectly formed with good ales and great food.
P. F.
This gastro pub was a recommendation, as I needed somewhere lovely to eat near Barbican. It has a gorgeously traditional interior, and charming touches like ale served in tankards, but I found the much vaunted menu slightly lacking. Fish and seafood are a speciality here, but I found that my dish, of "posh fish fingers" was more miss than hit, and portions were less than generous. However, my partner ate one of their famous pies, and declared it delicious, so it may be I just chose the wrong thing from the menu.
If you can get a table in their "fox hole" - snug little wooden booths at the back of the pub - this can be an incredibly cosy dinner experience. There are good ales, both local and national craft beers, and their wine list is entertainingly eccentric. I tried hard to love this pub! The setting and decor are full on quaint English pub, so it's very popular with visiting tourists, and it has a great atmosphere.
If you're an Agatha Christie fan, use the opportunity of being in this leafy Clerkenwell square to check out Florin Court, the art deco apartments that were the home of ITV's Poirot - now sadly rather dilapidated.
B. G.
Egg-cellent scotch egg, and friendly staff.
O. R.
Good old pub
M. H.
Great rooms and great staff
S. I.
Pretty decent Shoreditch boozer
A. F.
They have good burgers!
A. J.
The Fox & Anchor always has a good collection of well kept and served cask ales - more often than not served in old school pewter tankards. Home made pork scratchings, scotch eggs and pies complement nicely. Food is also consistently good including the full fried breakfasts.
B. P.
Very nice excellent servive
P. E.
Excellent beer and ambiance

Beer was served in pewter tankards on my last visit - a nice touch.

Came here yesterday and I had such a great time that I decided to write my first review. Music was great, I was also told about this app called Secret DJ by one of your staff members who was very helpful and very friendly, he served me very well and is a great bartender and an even better person. Can’t remember his name but he’s a shortish guy with glasses and a beard. Food was sooo good and the pub also had a very very good selection of spirits. It was so good seeing the staff working and smiling together, that’s the works off a great team. I’m definitely going to try and come as often as possible now

(Translated) Very beautiful. We eat well. I was hoping for a greater range of beers, however, it was good but not cold enough
(Original)
Molto bello. Si mangia bene. Speravo in un maggior assortimento di birre però era buona anche se non abbastanza fredda

(Translated) Nice place found by accident after a day of travel. The blond boy at the counter was very kind, he recommended two good beers: a pale ale and a dark one that they keep only during the month of December. We also ordered a burger and a pork loin with potatoes and egg, both of which are pleasant. Feeling treated well away from home is very important. Well done and see you soon.

Bravi e a presto.

(Translated) Accommodation during honeymoon.
The 150-year-old bathroom sink is impressive. Take advantage of the old feel of the interior. Clean and tidy Better than any 5 star hotel in the city.
The rooms are large and nice. However, it is difficult to make a reservation.
I went in November, but the inside of the room was a little cold because of the chilly weather.
The pub on the first floor has excellent beer compared to the food.
Food itself is about 2 out of 5? I think I ate about 5 meals, but I don't think of anything other than beer. British food... almost overall, about 1.5 to 2 points out of 5. (British traditional food, many strange pies)
Convenient because there are many nearby tourist spots.
