Reviews of Museum Tavern
R. E.
Really nice and cozy pub. Old Victorian style decoration and nude festive elements.
Sadly they don’t serve my favourite E1 Brew Co IPA but the Beavertown one had to be the alternative.. Also the rhubarb spritz drink is a nice light daytime one.
Great selection of foods and pies etc. I had the bound meat burger and they also do a nice vegan pie. All very nice.
Worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Had a fantastic time in the Museum Tavern, the staff were really pleasant and friendly, good selection of ale’s , me and the wife also had a meal which was good “and plenty of it “ . The pub has a really good atmosphere, will definitely go in again next time we’re in London.
G. B.
This is a friendly, no nonsense pub that serves food at very reasonable prices for Central London. The range of beer is fine. IPA was £2.50 on special promotion! It was also Karl Marx’s haunt when he used the British Museum library. The pub has many fine Victorian features. This is the best value, historic pub in Central London, hence the 5* rating.
R. M.
Greene King Pub right in front of the British Museum. It definitely has a "olde" world sense inside. I liked their leather seating couch and the old wood. They were out of some beers when I visited but had a Greene King IPA and a Camden Hells. It was a pricy pub but I think in line for the area. Worth a pint if you're visiting the museum opposite. There were more tourists in here than locals I think.
박.
All staffs were very kind. We were satisfied with salty burger, fried potatoes, carrot cake and peas. And fried fish was not bad. There are many many kinds of draft beer. I hope to visit next time with my husband.

September 2020-
After visiting the nearby museum, we were pretty hungry. We happened to spot this place, but as we started to walk in, my youngest realized she had lost her mask. The lady at the door was super nice and got a mask from behind the counter. They made us feel quite comfortable as they didn't make a scene about the situation at all. They were kind and very helpful, when they really didn't have to be.
Place was clean and very covid compliant. Awesome staff!
Food was absolutely spot on, and we will definitely visit again.
Highly recommended.
P. W.
Brilliant stop for a bite and a pint after a hard few hours at the British museum.... Good menu, good beer, friendly staff and reasonably priced. Would also like to go back on an evening and see what the atmosphere is like.
K. W.
Dropped in yesterday with my wife. Staff were lovely, great friendly atmosphere. Food was delicious and reasonably priced, good selection of drinks incl. Alcohol free. Will definitely drop by again.
M. T.
Absolutely loved it here. The staff were fantastic very helpful and friendly and kind nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was excellent and delicious and good value for money. We enjoyed ourselves so very much that we will definitely come back and recommend them to our friends and family. 👍👍👍👍

I had to wait quite a bit for my steak sandwich. Sadly i ended up with a quite chewy pieces of meat.
I was not asked if i wanted it medium cooked or as overcooked as i got it.
For the price of 10gbp, I'm not happy with what I got sadly.

I spent 14 days in London and probably had lunch here 8 of those days. I like to be a "regular," even when traveling. I worried this place would be more a tourist spot, given it proximity to the British museum. But, seriously, having a pint here, eating here, was a high point of my visit. The managers working there were SO nice, and SO real. Great food. Never had anything bad. Sunday roast, spectacular. Pies, spectacular. But most of all, people working there were so nice. I miss them. And I will probably travel to London again soon just to hang out here. Seriously.
S. C.
What a wonderful place with lovely friendly staff, the manager has a great professional attitude and can't do enough for you. Very impressive all round, food, beer, cleanliness.
Just great..
J. R.
Honestly, a wonderful fish and chips in a non chain atmosphere. An original tavern with charming service and delicious food and funky leather banquets. Perfect!!!
F. O.
Afternoon spend at the museum tavern. Lovely atmosphere, amazing choice of drinks and food. Just in front of brithis museum. Must try: nachos and
katsu burger. The best of this experience is : the staff, they will make your experience amazing. Thank you ladies I'll be back for sure
O. C.
Beautiful pub just outside the British museum, amazing decor with great drinks and friendly staff.
J. N.
Staff are really nice. Standard range of Greene King ales although they did have Rocking Rudolph which is a decent pint. Food is bog standard Greene King fayre.
I. S.
Highly recommend when visiting the British Museum. We were in the mood for great, fresh pub food and this place delivered. The fish and chips was very good, as was the chicken and mushroom pie. Stands out from many of the rest and we would certainly go back.
j. U.
We love the staff and the service. Very intuitive and welcoming. We couldn’t decide what beer to drink so the chap immediately offered if we want to try. The burger was amazing. Much better than Byron. It’s my burger place from now on. I hope we get the same staff again.
B. P.
Tired of the British Museum? This is a classic British place with a classic British menu!
Or just for a coffee.
Warm and special.
S. H.
Beautiful old pub with a good selection of beers and food and decent value prices for London.
O. G.
Excellent traditional London pub. Perfect for a pint after the museum. If you're in the neighborhood on a Sunday, have the Sunday roast. I felt like a kid again.
K. W.
Six pumps but only one beer available - and that was abbot.... Convenient friendly and comfortable but miss the range of ales this pub used to offer.
J. A.
After visiting the British museum l enjoyed a good refreshing beer. The staff were very friendly and chatty. A most pleasant 1/2 hour or so.
K. P.
Cosy pub opposite the British Museum, serving good value food and a fine selection of bitters and lagers - friendly staff and nice atmosphere with seats outside
G. M.
Great place for a beer after visiting the British museum. Wide range of well kept ales.
R. A.
Nice pub that's open later than usual. Didn't have a chance to try food but looks like it's worth a visit
T. M.
The Museum Tavern is a Greene King (formerly Taylor-Walker) pub opposite of the British Museum - as such, it's a good place to wind down after a stressful visit to the always over-crowded exhibitions. Fortunately, it's also one of the better Greene King pubs, with a larger than usual range of hand-pumped ales and lagers, friendly staff, and solid (if streamlined) food at only slightly elevated prices. Despite the popular location, the Museum Tavern is no tourist trap. You will also find the décor of this historic pub to be pleasant and cozy, so it can be considered a place to linger with your friends or family. There are rather few other pubs nearby, none of them as good as this one - so I recommend it strongly.
G. S.
Friendly pub opposite the entrance to the British Museum. Tasty if unexciting food on offer. It's rather small I'd recommend reserving a table at busy times.
C. D.
Great traditional English pub. Staff was helpful and got us a seat. Shepherd's Pie was really tasty and beer was fresh.
M. R.
Lovely 1700's pub. Lovely staff and lovely food. Definitely one to visit. I'll be back soon.
D. B.
I enjoyed it here. Very attentive service. Good vegan Sunday Nut Roast. 5 stars when they go fully vegan or at least plant-based.
L. L. M. S.
Best fish and chips we have eaten in London, bohemian atmosphere with different drinks served on the balcony and at the tables. Cozy atmosphere and easy access through the main streets and avenues!
M. H.
Nice little pub close to British Museum. We didn't eat but the food looked wonderful. Nice atmosphere.
H. T.
Good London style pub good location, the Tavern is very popular lots of tourists calling in. Sometimes struggle for space not a large bar. Got a decent selection of beers a bit on the dear side well its London do I need to say anything else. Definitely woth a vist for a few drinks or a bar meal.
D. H.
Proper pub. Good beers. Friendly service. Well wotlrth a visit
N. “. c. O.
Best pub food I’ve had! Hunter’s Chicken is a real treat! Great beer selection and nice atmosphere :)
S. F.
Great Sunday roast and fantastic staff. Very warm and welcoming, with a par beer selection. Will be back.
e.
Top quality team that create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The food was excellent. All of the ales are greene king but served extremely well as a result. Plenty of lager, cider and wine options alongside. Would recommend 👌
姜.
The chocolate cake here is amazing 🤩💗💗💗
D. M.
Just in front of the British Museum not the best decor or interior only few seats but when it rains is a great stop after or before your museum visit
S. R.
Lovely traditional pub near the British Museum. Great beer and the chips were delicious
S. B.
Really friendly staff with a traditional pub feel to it
C. M.
Tavern is really cute but the food is average. Good place for a pint but I'd go elsewhere to eat.
S. L.
Stopped in for a swift pint after visiting the British Museum. The staff were friendly and the prices were semi-reasonable for such an expensive part of the country. Cannot comment on the décor or atmosphere as we sat outside, only complaint was that our 3 drinks were a little slow but aside from that, it was a pleasant pub.
H. K.
Tasty food, I had the steak and ale pie which serve with delicious gravy. Friendly staff. Nice pub to rest if you fancy a local beer instead of coffee.
E. A.
Must visit this Old English Tradional Pub!
Excellent friendly service, we had great food!
L. c.
Nice and friendly staff clean good food 👌 give it a try Recommended also good 🍺 beer
I did come back again I work in the british museum and enjoy coming to your pub it is a great 👍 place to be thanks to you and all your staff keep up all your good work 👍
A. L.
Wouldn't say that it's no good, but it's not the most impressive meal in my trip. Food, a bit pricey. But the local vibe was lovely.
T. F.
There are easily dozens of shops selling fish and chips in the area but this one stands out to most because of it's prime location - right in front of the Great British Museum. Awesome outdoor seating provided as well in case the London weather is cooperative.
S. M.
Lovely traditional pub, friendly staff and great food!
b. r.
Very nice pub. Convenient to eat at after visiting the British Museum. Food was very good. We got the meat pies.
C. W.
Lovely old English pub, friendly staff.
Could do with a bit more information about using the app to order (nothing on the tables).
Otherwise very nice 👍🏻
G. W.
Bar has nice interior and staff were very friendly and helpful, had food which was your normal pub food which was ok
R. J.
One of my favourite pubs in this part of London. Good food menu and friendly staff. Somewhat pricey drinks.
K. C.
Pretty poor service, visited during the week when there was a couple outside and one person indoors. Very quiet and it wasnt particularly busy. 3 bar staff people sat by the bar talking, had to wait 10 minutes before I had to interrupt them to ask do I order through you or an app. Poor service which is a shame as it's a lovely traditional pub
L. M.
Been several times. Always great service and very good pub food despite being busy. The desserts are to die for.
A. S.
Nice Food nice location tipical english pub....🤩🤩🤩
R. H. O.
Everything we ate was great - steak and ale pie is comforting and the mac and cheese was just the thing 😍
J. K.
A lovely olde world pub with plenty of wooden architecture .. With seven hand pumps for real ale & cider , what’s not to like .. I didn’t eat myself but the food that was being served looked good .. Directly across the road from The British Museum , a nice stopping off point .. Brilliant staff ..
D. C.
Nice, nice staff, can get a little busy at times, but to be expected, its right across from British museum, but a good selection of beer's
L. D.
Service could be better, but the food and beer was great.
R. A.
Excellent pub! Good food, great beer , friendly service
H. t.
Oh I love the place soo much, it's got a good ambience, the staff is soo sweet. It's a great place to chill
B. D.
Nice little pub, even if it is in the middle of a tourist hot spot
D. L.
Very nice old pub 1760s. Good, friendly service and food.
M. G.
Very nice place with a friendly welcome. The food was tasty too.
C. M.
Good pub, music and staff. Lovely old fashioned decor too.
P. W.
My idea of the perfect London pub. Beer well kept too.
B. C.
Friendly attentive staff and great atmosphere.
Food was fabulous
g. v.
Needed a pint after a few hours in museum, nice pub lots of choice.
B. H.
Good spot for a pub lunch and a recuperative ale after the rigours of the British Museum
T. P.
Very fun pub!! Nice food and good staff.
G. T.
Excellent service and cracking pint of Abbo
h. g.
Great pub right next to the museum, amazing food and the staff are so nice and professional in what they do
G. D.
Lovely friendly pub with decent selection of beer
A. T.
Nice staff. Good shareable platters. Tried the fish and chips & very good food. Next door to the British Museum.
j. h.
Pleasant landlord and staff . Decent grub
D. F.
I think that, had we been able to spend more time here, it might have been more stars.
G. B.
Always loved this beautiful traditional pub!
S. H.
A great well run pub with lovely staff
T. B.
Great, friendly staff and a nice selection of drinks
J. G.
What a nice place good Selection of drinks the manger James and the team are really friendly, the food was really nice good portions good value for your money highly recommended.
L. W.
Very nice place to go for a quiet drink last week. Friendly helpful people working there.
D. C.
Very good lunch at reasonable price with good service in pleasant surroundings after morning at the museum
N. W.
A nice, relatively inexpensive, place near the British Museum. We had to wait a bit for a table as it was about 2pm, but once we were seated we were actually served at the table, despite the signs saying order at the bar! This was great for our large, crammed together group of 6. I ordered a Beef and ale pie, it was very good.
C. T.
For their location, you expect them to be bad. Their food taste very nice and very well cooked. They have a good selection of beers on tap. The atmosphere is quite traditional and nice.
C. C.
Damn tasty hunters chicken and bacon cheese burger. Reasonably priced meal. Bottled Cider could be cheaper ;) (but still damn good)
A.
Went there for a quick lunch before visiting The British museum. Quick service, cheap prices and the sandwich that I ordered was good
M. W.
Cosy pub ideal for drink after visiting the British museum
Y.
Overall good but not excellent. Food and drink are good but the seat we were sitting was old and broken. Not recommended for family but ok for small adult groups.
b. c.
Great little pub, friendly staff, good choice of drinks. Enjoyed my visit.
N. P.
Great looking place. Food was good, staff friendly and inviting 👍
C. _.
I had a good meal and the waiter was so kind! 💜
G. A. S.
Lovely old tavern with plenty of beers selection and outdoor seating area. It's also in a more secluded area away from all the corporate buildings wich means more room to sit and enjoy a beer. Also it's quite close to the museum but that doesn't affect how busy the pub is. Staff is also very friendly and the prices are on the medium to high side.
J. L.
Took the family to the museum and of course we had to stop off for a quick drink! The barman (can't remember his name) was top notch! Very warm and welcoming and recommended me a lovely Gin to try... i loved it! Although we weren't hungry, the food around us looked awesome! Maybe next time.
N. S.
This wound up being our first pub in London and we made a special trip back to make it also our last. The people just seemed friendlier and it was a much more comfortable atmosphere than many of the other we tried. The food was fine...with the exception of the fish and chips...they were amazing.
M. S.
A popular pub. It is just as London pubs might have been many decades ago in appearance but always has a good range of real ales. Have been going there for many years but have never tried the food. The service at the bar is sometimes a bit slow. The staff are good but they have a lot to do.
P. G.
Was lovely, pleasant staff, nice atmosphere
O. Q.
A small boozer opposite the British museum - so convenient to discuss all those ancient bits n bobs you have meandered past.
Nice staff, it serves food and a good (enough) selection of drinks.
Oh and I believe it was also mentioned in a Sherlock Holmes story, be sure to read the information on the walls to find out more!
G.
Bumped head walking down stairs.
edit 2021-06-22. didn't expect such an awesome response. upgrade to 5 stars and booking you James, for a beer!
F. B.
Each of the staff members we met were SO friendly and they have very good covid practices in place - with a smile. Highly recommend for a drink after the British museum which is right next door
M. O.
A very friendly tavern, SO pleased to be open again, right opposite the entrance to the British Museum.
R. I.
Enjoyed the nachos and abbot's thanks
R. Y.
Service is great and everyone is very, very nice. Good drink selection and I believe that the reason why I rate it only 3 stars is because I ordered poorly. The lasagne was quite interesting and not to my taste. The pub was also very packed and seating was quite constrained.
R. S.
Food ok service good location eceptional
A. K.
Considering the location we were surprised to be able to get seated and enjoy some food here. It has an old school look and feel which we really like and the staff are very friendly, serving nice food. Next time we are in the area we will definitely stop by.
F. P.
Warm welcome, great food and nice place !
A. N.
okay but been to better pubs in the area
D. D.
Good old fashioned boozer in a handy area of London, not far to walk from places like Covent Garden, bang next to British Museum.
Tried an IPA and had a Guinness, both well looked after, staff really pleasant.
Suffers from the usual problem of really popular pubs, not much space to perch of the tables are all full, but hard to fault the management for that.
A. T.
Reviewing as New Mum: handy pub locale from museum ONLY IF 1) you get there before crowds and 2) have done a baby change at the museum. There is space at front of pubs where pram can be placed next to table but very tricky to move a pram through pub. Staff were incredibly helpful and sweet. Toilets are downstairs and I couldn’t see baby change facilities. Food was lovely.
L. B.
Perfect portions and very tasty.
M. M.
Quite nice place to have a pint and fish’n chips. The waiter was friendly and talkative. I guess - the prices of food and drinks may appear a bit high to people who don’t earn UK salaries.
D. N.
Nice pub. Quite small bar with wood, glass and traditional bar layout. Had the Old Peculier - very nice. Didn't like the Portobello Market Porter as it was served about 10 degrees TOO COLD. Otherwise a very authentic pub in area where many pubs are less genuine. There s food but did not try. Downstairs toilets a bit grubby.
H. F.
I love the interior here - the Victorian feel throughout is very suitable for a traditional English pub. Food is great - again pertaining to the English pub tradition. We had the beef trencher and it was quite agreeable but the nachos were ace. I'd love to go back again. Next time I'll be going for a bottled beer, though, as the draught seemed a bit off. Their World Beer selection seems intriguing.
J. F.
OK for a drink after a long afternoon at the British Museum across the road. Good selection of gins (less so of tonic). Served well. Crowded and noisy location, with the available seats very closely spaced.
R. C.
Excellent British Food served with kindness and warmth
H.
Came here with family while on a walk, exactly opposite the British Museum, it's a Saturday afternoon and it was busy but we managed to find a table for four at 15:15pm.
Only stopped for a tea, food was ok by the look of the food two of my family members ordered is considered typical pub food. A novelty for anyone visiting on vacation and visiting the British museum.
Four stars as, although service was good and my sister and her husband's food didnt take long, our waiter was very moody. A smile goes a long way in the hospitality sector.
A. M.
These bars are all over the city by different names. You'll notice they all have the same menu. Fish and chips were delicious. Great variety of beers to choose from.
R. S.
Nice Pub with pleasant hospitality, The Fish and chips were delicious, the vegan dish (fried Halloumi cheese) was soaked in oil (beware) , the pale-ale was bitter and tasted like soap (maybe it's the taste of pale-ale, just have a lager instead) still, we had really nice time there.
A. W.
Nice traditional London pub offering standard pub food. Service had been quite frosty on my last couple of visits I'm afraid. Still, a great location and nice to sit outside and have a drink watching the world pass by.
J. B.
Decent pub with v good service and a good range of drinks available.
R. B.
Decent selection of beers and other drinks if ale us not your thing. Great location and a "proper" pub. Friendly and helpful staff make the Museum Tavern a worthwhile destination. 5 minutes walk from either Holborn or Tottenham Court Road stations. Of you want to dwell a while there are also board games to play.
M. C.
Staff were very attentive and the food was good. Nice building too, lots of history.
P. K.
Great pub opposite the British Museum. Great beers (especially the Old Peculiar) and nice food too. Good size fish with the fish and chips.
Only negative is the toilets are a bit smelly down stairs.
A. S.
Great pub, delicious pies, perfectly situated across from the museum. Perfect to stop in after wandering around the museum all morning for a filling lunch. Great beer selection too.
S. W.
nice food and good location
M. F. d. A.
The Mystery of the Invisible Gem — for a Sherlock Holmes to solve.
It’s probable that Conan Doyle used the Museum Tavern as a model for The Alpha Inn in his 1892 “The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle” — I did reread the story after having been to this pub.
The Museum Tavern is not quite a hidden gem, since it stands right before the crowds’ eyes, in front of the British museum, having received visitors like Karl Marx and J B Priestley in the past. An invisible gem, then, invisible to contemporary crowds?
Looking classy all dressed in black from the outside, its Victorian interior is even more beautiful — etched glass and carved woods remain from the 1858 refit.
Staff is very efficient in serving proper pub food — on our first visit we tried the Sausage and Mash, and the Venison Pie, all beautifully cooked and served in generous portions. But after having seen it delivered to another table, we had to return to try their Fish and Chips, which is huge, the fish tasty and crispy, all well above the average.
Upon the next visit to London, will return for more treats (both at the Museum and the Tavern) — whilst still wondering why this lovely place does not get more appraisal and recognition.
L. M.
Nice place to relax near the British museum with a lovely staff!
O. H.
Traditional British Pub where you can eat a delicious Fish & Chips and many other nice food. Of course you'll find a great variety of draught beer. Try it, you'll not be disappointed !
C. B.
I found this place by accident the Britsh Museum had just gotten closed when I got there, then in despair (rsrs), I looked around so when I spotted this place in front of me I didn't think twice and went there. I had different great beers (ale) and I felt welcomed by the staff. I have been there again since then
R. R.
Very good burgers and fish and chips, with a good Paulaner on its side. Very good and nice service. It's just in front of the British museum, perfect to go out and have lunch.
N. T.
Great food-exceeded our expectations. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend. The hand-pulled cask porter was really good, too.
김.
The food was nice, people were so friendly, place was small but well decorated and the seats were cozy(after a long tour around the museum, you need cozy seats, believe me) the bartender knows his stuff. Top british experience right there.
N. R.
Good grub and service, but could do with a bit of a spruce up. Especially the seat at the back!
D. B.
Not too expensive for a pint considering the location (between £4 and £5 which is admittedly steep in general but a prime location right in front of the British museum) and a lovely traditional pub atmosphere. Was served fast and politely.
D. K.
Very nice pub, lovely atmosphere and the Guinness was quite nice. Didn't try the food but the menu was good and I like the sound of their Ultimate Fish & Chips. Saving the 5th star until I've tried the food.
P. F.
A small pub (or tavern) just opposite the British Museum, and a good place to stop for a pint after a museum visit, as the vintage British culture seems to remain in this place.
I mainly go there for the Old Peculier Ale (brewed by Theakston), which is my favourite British ale on tap so far.
Staff was always friendly, and the pub food was decent.
J. B.
Decent enough 👌 pub.Great food and drink 🍸. Near the museums and a short walk 🚶♂️ to the centre of town. Would recommend 👌.
M. R.
Food is nothing special, but good nonetheless. Huge portions (at least to me) & average prices for the area. Very nice atmosphere, friendly staff. I enjoyed ny meal here, would definitively drop by again.
S. T.
Great place, awesome staff, delicious food!
L. E.
It is an ok central London pub, not cheap of course and does ok food. However toilets are always oppressively hot and being in the basement also difficult to access. Is also very busy being opposite the British Museum given all that it's not a bad pub.
D. S.
Welcoming and knowledgeable bartenders. Cute, old-school pub atmosphere and a very nice selection of beers and ciders on tap!
Oh yeah, and it's right across from the British Museum.
A. A.
Good experience, with quick service/friendly staff and not overcrowded. Conveniently located opposite to the British Museum. I would avoid going with a large group as the place is not very big (max 4 - recommended 2) but more importantly, enjoyed the food !
H. C.
Quite a nice pub/tavern with a good choice of drinks (mainly beer) & food. The beer was excellent, but don't bother with the food, as the quality really wasn't that great... They do offer good table service though.
R. L.
Staff very friendly. Only had the chicken wings but they were very nice
T. S.
Decent corner pub on a busy, touristy stress just outside of the British museum. With an average beer selection and grumpy waiters, this place struggles to get anything more than three stars. It's biggest plus is the outdoor seats facing the streets, and the local beers.
Z. T.
Good meal friendly service
S. K.
Lovely pub and atmosphere. Bang opposite the British Museum
S. B.
Pleasant traditional British pub, near to many hotels and the British museum
Good food menu with average priced drinks for London.
Go in for the evening for a quieter time
s. s.
Food was really good and the beers were amazing. Beware of your personal belongings. We almost lost our camera but caught the thief red handed.
S. G.
Typical central London Greene King pub in great location near the British Museum.
K. O.
Super spot for a drink directly opposite the gates of the British Museum. Good selection of beers and the ambiance is excellent. There is also food served, but I can't comment on that, not having eaten there.
A. B.
a really nice pub for a drink. i cant fault that. but seeing that they top up sauces (god knows how old the ketchup is) without just replacing is really concerning. EHO standerds is 28 days. legit ask for a new sauce when eating here just to garuntee its fresh. make sure the seal is not taken off to garuntee your sauce being within trading standards
K. C.
Brill service good food good value
J. L.
Massive and tasty burgers, very friendly staff and amazing Guinness!!!
S. H.
Friendly local. Part of Greene King chain. good range of beers and ciders. standard pub fare. clean and well served by good staff. toilets good standard of cleanliness.
D. S.
Food was average bar food but staff was super friendly and had a great selection of wine and beer. Also there were fun board and card games available for patrons to play on a cool rainy afternoon or evening.
D. F.
Very good quality beers. Friendly staff. Nice comfortable pub to relax with a pint after the museum
B. M.
Lovely place to go and enjoy your day. Food 🍲 and drink is brilliant. Staff superb, very clean family 👪 and disabled ♿ friendly. Well worth a visit.
S. M.
Friendly service, good beers
k. X.
Excellent English London pub serving traditional beers and lager along with real ale and excellent food. The staff are superb and the whole experience is very pleasant indeed.
C. D. G.
I had the best time ever. Missed my bus and this pub saved my evening and London trip
R. R.
Good friendly service and great pub food
W. M.
Bar tender was very nice but did not know how to make a simple martini. Did not have any lemons at the bar for drinks. Burger was not bad, but just average.
E. C.
Awesome, unbelievable, top of the World thanks you. Kiss from France
K. C.
Very attentive staff, fascinating building and fantastic food at 'normal' prices
E. M.
Nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Relatively quiet too - food delicious although the Sunday lunch is a bit of a let down in terms of vegetables served with it (only peas) which is a shame. Other things seemed more substantial. Good selection of deserts and ales etc. Staff a little rude but would return.
j. g.
Few pints and Fish and chips. Great old school pub. Fish and chips were excellent. Prices were surpisingly reasonable when considered location. I'll be back there for Fish and chips next time I'm in the big smoke.
G. R.
Nice beers, good price and very nice collection of musical stuff.
M. B.
Nice pub across the street from the British Museum. Many options for beer on tap. Food was good, I had the steak ale pie. Good prices.
C. T.
It's the real London pub experience. Very cosy with friendly staff. The food was excellent and there were a lot of beers on tap. However the drinks were quite pricy.
M. C.
Lovely old pub, friendly barman who give me some great advice on the best stouts and where to buy them very helpful and we will definitely be back next time I am in london
G. W.
I frequented this pub in the 1980’s. I visited again today and was very glad to see it hasn’t changed (which is a compliment, in this instance). Great pub, happy memories and Old Peculiar on tap - what more can I say?
J. R. A.
Cosy old style. A Green King pub, and that means very good beers, including their own IPA (India Pale Ale). Immediately opposite to the British Museum, so perfect for a visit in combination with that! Nearest tube station Tottenham Court Road.
G. M.
The best pre or post British Museum pitstop. It's so nice to have them both back!
C. “. B.
Food was quite well priced and delicious considering its location. Staff attitudes could be better but generally a nice place to grab a bite to eat or cool off with drinks
S. T.
A really lovely traditional pub! The food was yummy and there is no TV screen in this pub, great for someone who really just want to catch up with friends in a quieter pub!
J. P.
Great if you like ale and don't want to be somewhere too busy. It's small, but tables outside give plenty of space to spill out to on sunny days.
C. E.
I like it a lot. Great staff, prices good for Bloomsbury. Lovely interior. Spot on for a pint break whilst visiting the British Museum.
R. H.
Old Peculier (made by Theakston) cask conditioned on tap. Also had an excellent lamb shank shepard's pie. I like the pub atmosphere and decor. Very convenient for an ale after a visit to the British Museum.
R. W.
Great first pub this visit. Stsff are courteous, cod n chips and the sunday special roast chicken / sirloin was quite good. Limited seating, and decent altho limited beer selection
D. W.
Excellent museum to visit while in London, take the suggested 1 hour exhibit per the map if short on time. You will find more to do on the way.
M. S.
Thirsty after your visit to the British Museum? Pop across the road for a refreshing drink and good food. Due to it's handy location it can get busy.
j. i.
Good decent pub with a bit of a buzz about it.
P.
Green King pub, know what you're getting. Lovely staff.
D. T.
A cosy little spot, comfortable and quiet, opposite the British Museum. Have enjoyed chatting with the delightful Aneta. Pay them a visit after a day at the museum. 🍺
A. W.
A proper old fashioned boozer! Friendly staff, great atmosphere.
C. M.
Opposite the British museum. Gets crowded but an interesting pub, real ales and good reasonably priced food.
Nice stop off when exhausted from a day in the BM.
S. P.
Good pub food in a historic location. Due to the popular area, it seems this small pub can often get very crowded.
W. P.
A friendly, very busy lite pub in a great location. Does have a few outside seats so lovely for the summer.
F. L.
This is right across from the British Museum. Almost an attachment, if you will. I can't help but think this place might be sort of a tourist trap, but the selection is really fantastic, and the food is good.
A little pricey, but not insane.
A. L.
Really enjoyed this place for a weary drink after the museum. Excellent selection of beers too. Wonderful pub.
Ν. Μ.
Lovely cozy atmosphere and great fish n' chips, with a good variety of beers.
J. K.
Very nice atmosphere, large portions, and great drinks. Be advised kitchen does not open until NOON. Very friendly.
P.
Very lovely traditional pub and super friendly staff. I'll be back for a Sunday roast.
B. A.
Cosy little pub next to the British Museum. Good range of beer, tap, craft or otherwise. Bit pricey but probably normal for this part of town. Quite busy at most times of day
T. P.
Traditional ambiance and good selection of beers and wines. Food experience is similar to Wetherspoons, ok but very basic. Best for drinks only.
J. F.
Good old fashioned pub with attentive bar staff
A. G.
The chicken and bacon sandwich was made to perfection, and the beer was cold and great.
Highly recommend eating here.
D. S.
Good selection of beers (unlike the nearby Plough) and right opposite the British museum. Can't comment on the food as we didn't order any.
S. W.
Had a fantastic late lunch here after a long morning at the museum. Food and service were great and we enjoyed the atmosphere! Would go again!!
B.
Nice food and cider. The jacket potatoes are awesome, also the scampi and fish. I recommend their puddings: the apple pie is delicious!
J. E.
Good all-round pub with a relaxed atmosphere, but watch out for the mac'n cheese it has a bit of a spicy kick to it.
P. H.
Always very crowded at mealtimes. Place is very small but the food is good. Staff efficient and friendly.
J. L.
Great place for a beer and great food. We had the fish and chips and hunter’s chicken. Both delicious! We’ll be coming back.
M. V.
Nice but busy pub in the city center of London. Very good food is served here, friendly staff and good prices of everything even if it's in London.
I. S.
Well organised, good distancing,
Friendly good food ,
Recommended
C. T.
Nice pub. Expensive for what it is. Very small. Caters to people going to the museum who can't be bothered to walk any further.
B. B.
Nice easy food. Took a while to get service but it's usually busy so that's ok. Good selection of food and drink
N. D.
Wonderful proper pub, a bit on the tourist trail due to its location, but has managed to retain a great feel and has not been updated. Long may it remain as it is
C. H.
Good, traditional central London pub. Good food and good beer. Beautiful pub glass in the windows. Friendly welcoming team.
M. K.
Nice pub, quick service. Although I suspect our food had just been microwaved. Enjoyed it nonetheless
H. T.
A cracking boozer just off the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street. Things don't get much better than grabbing a pint, nabbing a seat outside looking out at the British Museum, and watching the world (translation: tourists) pass by. It seems apt, as someone not local to London, that I first discovered the expression "cracking boozer" at this pub while I was doing just that.
K. L.
Great place right by the British mesum. Definitely worth stopping in and grabbing a beer. Maybe even a meal as well!
E. B.
Beautiful food and very friendly staff
H. F.
Beautiful pub with great beer and a lot of history. Karl Marx used to lunch here while writing Das Kapital in the British Library.
S. B.
Decent selection of craft brews, but its a bit pricey and the service wasn't all that good. Go to the Plough basically across the street for a better experience.
N. K.
Had a nice quiet drink with my son.
s. h.
Nice atmosphere. Friendly service. Reasonably priced. Had the chicken sharing platter which was very nice for a quick lunch with a friend.
R. H.
Great little pub. Good range of beer and ale. Food is good too
C. R. M.
The waiter was the rudest I’ve ever come across (I only wanted to ask if I needed to pay before or after, and he ignored me and yelled at me saying he wqs busy) but the waitress intervened and I got my food served. It’s a 4 because the food was ok.
A. C.
The draught beer seemed like it had gone bad. (aftertaste was like freezer burn) Also a bit expensive. Great atmosphere though. The design is very nice.
J. “. O.
Great place with awesome food and wide range of beverages. Definitely a good place to visit after a day in the British Museum.
K. D.
Quaint little pub that I imagine is very busy during the day - because it is so close to the British Museum. I enjoyed it there late at night.
S. B.
Beautiful historic interior. Clientele mostly tourists eating pie and chips. Reasonable beer selection.
J. R.
Beer passable for Greene King, but excellent and reasonably priced food, awesome staff, and amazing setting. Well worth a visit.

In the Amazon e-book, The Mapped London of Sherlock Holmes, the Museum Tavern has been identified as the "Alpha Inn" in the 1889 Sherlock Holmes lue Carbuncle adventure. The “Alpha Inn” was described as being near the British Museum, “At the corner of one of the streets which run down into Holborn”. Some of the inn’s regular.s, including Henry Baker, formed a goose club. By contributing a few pence each week, they each received a Christmas, goose. It was Henry Baker’s luck to receive the goose with the blue carbuncle in its crop.
B. S.
