Reviews of Punch Tavern
J. W.
Friendly welcome, clean venue and nice atmosphere. Real ale choice was limited to one beer, but these are difficult times for London pubs and the Hophead they had from Dark Star was fine. Everything felt professionally managed.
G. L.
Stopped by this place during an outing in London, the sign outside actually says Gin Palace as well as punch tavern. I went in to have a drink as its close the Polish embassy and I had to wait.
The exterior wasn't very inviting, it looked very smart but uninviting. The would recommend not having opaque doors so people could see that the place is open and appear more inviting.
Inside it was a really nice old fashioned feeling bar that was nice to sit in.
They have more than 60 Gins available which was great. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I would definitely visit again when in the area

The entrance corridor of this Grade II listed pub, with its glorious Victorian tiles and mosaics, really entices you in. Once inside you find a relatively small but light and airy gin palace, complete with glass roof.
The pub’s history is quite confusing! The original pub on this site was called the Crown and Sugar Loaf, but was renamed the Punch Tavern in the 1840s after the satirical magazine “Punch”, whose editorial team used to drink here.
It was rebuilt in the 1890s in two phases; the main part of the pub on Fleet Street in 1894–95, and then its Bride Lane frontage in 1896-97. The magazine closed down in the 1990s and, in the same decade, the Punch Tavern underwent its own radical change; an internal row resulted in the pub splitting in two, with the back half setting up its own business under the original name, the Crown and Sugarloaf. I said that it was confusing!
This pub is a gem and the staff today were really friendly and welcoming. Definitely worth a visit.

Very nice find.
It is the place to go when it comes to gin.
A historical place for a pub, dates back very long (forgot how long)
Food was good and served very quickly.
Try the fudge as a desert too.

The Punch Tavern
Used to frequent this place back in the early nineties. Just as I remembered it...lovely cut glass windows, marble topped bar, beautiful glass ceiling and tiled floor...AND the most important thing great beer...Timothy Taylor Landlord it was coming to the end of the barrel but still OMG! Friendly barstaff, had a nice chat...then a new barrel of Tribute...another OMG! Flipping gorgeous 😍.
Then a baby Guinness just to whet the appetite. Then a shot called a Jam Doughnut?
A cherry liquor and Baileys on top...another OMG! Such a lovely atmosphere.

Excellent pub with tasty food for a decent price (with London standards in mind) and an amazing service. I really enjoyed the fish and chips here. It also is a very good spot, if you are doing a bit of London tourism and want to avoid overcrowded and expensive places. Highly recommend! :)
T. S.
What a cool pub! We booked the London Gin Distillery around the corner and were disappointed and decided to pop in here instead. They have an awesome gin selection and an old school atmosphere.
R. M.
Great hidden boozer. Nice nostalgic/modern decor and great staff behind the bar. One of the bar tenders got us to try a "Jam Doughnut" shot, absolutely beautiful. If you like a Baby Guinness give it a try.
T. B.
Very well styled and presented pub. Impressive entrance as you walk into the pub. Very friendly bar staff and manager, only popped in for a half and he made the effort to speak to me. Didn’t see or try and food. Only thing that let it down was their beer selection, pretty average pint of Sussex best on cask. Not a great selection of craft or cask beer.
D. B.
Last of the great old boozers on Fleet St, this is a proper pub. Great beers, pretty decent food menu and excellent service. They were rushed of their feet but everything was done with a grace and a smile. Check out the iconic art on the walls depicting old Punch magazine covers from back in the day, historic and still relevant satire. Lauren was fantastic, proper great service and charming to boot. Highly recommended.

Riley was a fantastic bartender. Entertained our group and made us delicious gin drinks. He really knows how to put on a show and connect with people. The bar is beautiful and has a great selection of gins. Only downside is he’s an Arsenal fan 😂
P. S.
The staff told me the pub started around 1860. Visiting it is like stepping back to Victorian era as the decor has been very well preserved. The bar staff were very nice to us and the prices were less than we expected.
p. j.
Very friendly staff just went in out of the rain but received a warm welcome!!
J. N.
Great old pub. More of the 'Gin Palace' style than others in Fleet Street. Remarkably cheap beer for the area. Good music and friendly staff. Food looked good, large portions but we only drank there.
A. H.
Very nice pub, good beer served and one of my favourites.
S. B.
Called in yesterday for lunch with the family. We all loved it, a little gem of a pub hidden away, great customer service, the food was fabulous and so good to have a decent pint of Sussex in the middle of London. We'll be back!
M. S.
Friendly service, excellent food and drinks! Modern and chilled atmosphere. One of the best and different pubs in the city centre!
M. B.
Absolutely love this place, I'm sure I visit it again when I'll be in London.

Most grateful to the bar staff this lunchtime. We came for a drink and I left my phone on the table .
We rang and fortunately they had found it and kept it safe. Had all my cards and cash in it. Huge thank you👏👏👏👏
O. S.
I'm a regular at this pub and can really recommend it. It's a great place for (after work) drinks - the atmosphere is so comfortable and homely, the staff is very friendly. It can get quite busy in the evenings (at least pre-corona, I haven't been since the pub reopened), but it's usually space to stand at the bar and chat with colleagues and friends. The food is also nice.
D. T.
A delightful place with a mosaic tiled entrance, a beautiful glazed ceiling, great beer and great staff! A real treasure of a pub. Another day another visit, still a lovely pub with great staff and great beer, call in sometime, I recommend it.
R. B.
What a fantastic pub, everyone was very friendly the ale was very well kept. A pub not to wander by, well worth a vist .
They only have a small selection of gins I think they had 60 different ones.
E. P.
Beautiful pub and the guys working in there are super nice and funny. I had only a drink but they serve food as well. A place I would go back for sure.
w. l.
Great food and drinks. Perfect location to take a break while walking the tourist sites.
V. V.
Amazing nicely decored pub with awesome staff. The bartender had thrown a few slices of cucumber in my gin and soda and now I have a new favorite drink! I saw some of the patrons eating their food and it looked amazing. Asked the table next me there general opinion and they had nothing short of good things to say about the food. I will definitely be coming back here if I find myself in the area again.

Small older pub. Quite light inside thanks to sky lighting and mirrors. No garden so smokers stand at the entrance where smoke wafts back in. Quiet on a Sunday lunch time. Has a local feel.
S. C.
A really lovely lively pub nestled in amongst stuffy alternatives. Great music, boisterous landlord, lovely staff and good food. I'd definitely return
A. M.
Great little pub with friendly staff. Used to be a gin Palace so very ornate including a sky light.
D. S.
Good beer and a truly magnificent gin selection (50+) along with a barman who could tell you about them all! Well worth a visit.
T. P.
Great pub. Walked past a few times and finally made it in. I've been missing out . Really good staff and atmosphere

Really nice pub on a Sunday. One of the best in London.

Relaxed ambience next to a busy square. Food is tasty and service is kind.

Lovely pub, great governor, really good food 👍 👍

Have visited a couple of times, was first pick on our first trip back to London and couldn’t fault it. The manager and staff member Ewa were brilliant and friendly. They were both very attentive especially during these difficult times. It’s nice to find a pub in London were you can have a banter with staff. Ewa made one of the best blue lagoons I have had so we will definitely be back.

Came in today on the Liquid History Tour ! Such a lovely reception and awesome gin! Thank you would have loved to stay longer but will definitely be back to taste a few more gins!!
T. W.
Well at long last I've been out and I enjoyed it tremendously. I met with my daughter, who works nearby, for a few drinks and some dinner. We know this pub from before everything changed and hoped for a good evening and we weren't disappointed. It's a very attractive place and it had a fair few customers making an inviting and lively atmosphere. The guvnor was superb, convivial and hearty just the way I like a pub guvnor to be. Having got off to such a good start everything went up a gear when our din dins arrived. We both, at guvnor's recommendation, ordered Chicken Supreme. I, along with a great many others I've no doubt, had memories of an unpleasant gooey dish from decades ago. This is NOT that dish. From the perfectly cooked vegetables, peas, cabbage and baby onions, to the seared and moist chicken all served in an especially light flavoursome sauce this was a triumph.
A. D. B.
Great atmosphere and friendly bar staff. Loved that they had vegan options on the menu
E. G.
Good pub, on CAMRA pub crawl map. We drank Hook Norton best bitter and it was spot on, very nice, but reassuringly expensive! Also music, which I don't like, unlike the Princess Louise. Did not see any hacks in raincoats, Punch or otherwise.
M. P.
I've just started work up the road and have been to this pub twice since it has opened after lockdown (and I'm not a pub person).
The service and greeting from the staff is amazing, its like visiting your favourite fun family and just as welcoming.
I had a lovely burger and chips, although I found it a little pricey but I assume that's London prices. The burger was home made and the chips were near perfect to my taste.
I would recommend this pub in a heartbeat, just for the friendly staff alone.
o.
We loved this pub on our tour today. A lesson in gin was just what was needed on national gin day. Thank you for being do welcoming and making our time at your pub so good.
K. M. M.
Good food and very friendly staff.
L. B.
Great place run by awesome people
M. B.
Brilliant, the food was so nice, the owner's attitude a real treat! my favorite pub in LDN so far.
T. D. W.
Great food, amazing staff and such a beautiful old pub. Definitely recommend if you're ever around Fleet Street
W. S.
The pub is very unique and the bar manager is a character. I did get annoyed when he called me lovely and just a few other things but he is great fun to mess with. Food was great. I really enjoyed the food but beer selection was poor. Would go back again, but only for the place as it looked great.
M. N.
Nice bar with wide variety of beers and cocktails. Open until late 11pm.
E. L.
Lovely period interior and nice beer selection
K. A.
Amazing pub, great food and Fantastic staff

We stopped in for dinner before New year's. Lovely wait staff. Nice, relaxed and cozy atmosphere. Generous portion size for the fish and chips. Burger was good. Brownie was a little dry. All round we really enjoyed it.
S. C.
Beautiful Victorian pub with some original interiors...but done up tastefully.
The place was buzzing on a Thursday night, but all under control
My friend and I decided to have a burger and chips in the restaurant part; absolutely delicious...all washed down with some Brixton pale ale...fabulous stuff!
And the service from the delightful Eva was warm and welcoming, but also efficient and professional...all done with a smile and a joke; she's quite a wit
Really great place and was worth the trip from North West London in the wind and rain.
A. K.
We were looking for somewhere to watch the football while visiting London. The manager was happy to put it on for us. We had lunch while watching the match, the fish and chips and steak and ale pie were excellent. I was looking for a gin to have and was recommended the Chase pink grapefruit which was lovely. Great pub!
C. J.
I dont post reviews often but I make exceptions when its deserved. First off; the staff and Manager are wonderful! Very attentive, fun, knowledgeable, experienced and everyone that I met had a great disposition despite it being an incredibly busy night.
Secondly; the food was REALLY good! Proper English fare with a modern style. The chefs obviously know what they are doing. Also, it's very reasonably priced for a pub located on Fleet St.
Great English ale selection. Laid back, upbeat, and fun atmosphere.
I'm also going to mention the local patrons. I met quite a few that night and was made to feel right at home.
Honestly I would probably make this my regular pub if I lived in London.
G. O.
Nice place for an after-work drink! Staff were very friendly. It is unfortunate however that is closes so early on a Friday night.
m. p.
Great beer, good ambiance.
E. m.
The environment in this place is very welcoming and it's really good if you're having a quick lunch with colleagues or friends. The tall Carribbean waiter (can't remember his name 🌚) was quite the comedian and made the wait for food quite bearable!😆 I would also recommend you order a salmon at this place. You'll thank me later 😊
B. G.
Tucked between buildings on Fleet Street, the entrance takes you into a traditional pub with panelled decor and wood framed mirrors. Carvings, paintings and posters of Punch abound but I couldn't easily find anything to tell me what connection the pub might have to Punch the character or the magazine.
The pub began to fill up around lunchtime. The menu was typical of pub food, but as I didn't eat I can't comment on the food.
There was a limited range of real ales on tap as well as a wider range of gas pumped beers and lagers. I enjoyed the real ale I had, a Cornish IPA .
If I was passing I might drop in for a beer. I'm sure there are times when the atmosphere is lively, but perhaps not lunchtime. My wife really liked the pub and if it hadn't been that we had an appointment she would have been keen to eat there.
Perhaps I should give it another visit.
A. G.
Best pub in London and the staff are amazing
P. B.
Great dog friendly traditional pub. Food and beer very good.
W. C.
Went for the quiz night. The space was nice, they have a good selection of beers, and the quiz itself was very well-run. There seemed to be a bit of confusion as to whether the tables were waited on or not, but overall this is a nice spot, and I will be coming back.
m. l.
Good place, was absolutely packed out.
A. J.
Loved the service and the fish and chips
C.
This place it's amazing, the beers are perfect, and the ambiance also amazing. One of the best places to drink a beer with friends.
K. S.
I would give more stars if I could! Seriously best pub on Fleet St.
The atmosphere was just right and if you're looking for friendly and helpful staff you are in the right place. Despite being really busy (apparently they have quiz nights on Tuesdays), Patricia wonderfully looked after us - tip: if you are a newbie on gins like me, ask her for a recommendation... you will not be let down!
Extra tip: if you are just looking for a small bite, ask for the halloumi sticks or duck croquettes, they are delicious!
I will definitely be back!!
M. H.
Great selection of gin, friendly staff. great place
B. K.
The interior is nice, however after at 13.30 they were already out of fish&chips which is bit of a shame. The steak & mushroom pie is not bad, but the meat was a bit gristly. The beer selection looked nice, the gin cocktails were tempting, but we didn't try them.
D. K.
Came here on a pub tour and had an incredible time. Gin selection was huge, and the owner personally told us about all his favorite types. Such a happy guy, and was so nice for him to take so much time to talk to us.
C. C.
A lovely old atmospheric victorian pub in central London. I had done lots of walking so it was a lovely quiet place to relax and rest my feet.
We had a lovely meal and the food was excellent. The staff we're very friendly and chatty. Just what was needed at the time.
T. R.
We came here on a Tuesday ready for a quiz night. We had heard good things and as there were daily food specials we were ready for a good night!
First and foremost, the gin menu here is extensive and you really should take advantage of it if you are a gin drinker. Apart from that, the drinks menu isn’t particularly inspired with soft drinks being served in cans.
The food was fairly decent but nothing to really write home about. There were no complaints but no real compliments either.
The quiz, in my opinion, is to be avoided. The host had no sort of personality and it was like being barked at by a drill sergeant. With an entire quiz section devoted to Princess Diana it all seemed a little surreal.
As a pub it’s actually quite nice but if you’re coming here for a quiz I would go elsewhere!
H. W.
Staff were super lovely! Very accommodating. Highly recommend. Lovely venue for a drink.
P. C.
Very convenient pub for meeting people in the Fleet Street/At Paul's area. Retains some historic tiling, especially in the entrance. Plenty of space. They have a limited number of beers (3 casks, I think), but these are good. I haven't eaten here for a couple of years because the food was nothing special, so I treat it as a drinking pub.
M. L.
A Surprisingly not particularly busy pub in central London. Even on a Friday after work, we were able to get served immediately and sit at a table. Bar had a great decor and a nice vibe. Clearly served food, which looked better than average pub grub.
G. P.
Popped in for a pint but the damp smell coming up to the bar from the toilets below was unpleasant. In the men's toilet there were two glasses left by thoughtless patrons but the bar was quiet so I would have expected staff to have checked and removed them. The floor of the gents didn't look like it had seen a mop since opening time and I visited at 7pm. Pity as it's a lovely traditional pub.
m. j.
Great pub
l. h.
My husband and i wandered in to The Punch Tavern for dinner and a Guinness... they seated us immediately, and we had a delicious plate of banger sausages and mash- the GM came over and visited with us and it was a great experience.. we will definitely visit again the next time we are in London!
N. F.
Really pleasant hidden gem of a pub with nice staff. Loses a star as beer selection wasn't fantastic.
j. A.
A lovely little pub, this. The decor is a delight and worth going in to see that alone. Beer selection could be a tad broader, but what they have is good. Nice menu, nice staff... it's a nice place to be.
R. J.
This is a true find and a great Fleet Street Pub. I've known it for close on 36 years. Indeed, when I first came here it was a lot bigger, but one half of the original pub has now become a different pub and it has added an air of curiosity to what remains. The service is excellent, the food - I've enjoyed both pies and fish and chips here - is ample and tasty. All in all its a great location.
Y. 4.
Wow what a gem. Was like stepping back in time to the hay day of fleet street. Worth going in just to soak up the atmosphere
M. C.
Enjoyed a decent pint here with a friend. Lovely old style pub with small interesting entrance leading to a decent sized drinking hole. Nice staff and good background music. Worth a visit.
S. A.
Lovely location and used to love this place but now under new management- sad to see they’ve dropped the gin speciality menu for some inexplicable reason in favour of more generic cocktails. The drink I had wasn’t bad but they’ve also hiked the prices up. Bar tender was abrupt and didn’t give me any change back.
C. B.
We were in the punch tarvern last night. You couldnt fault the pub at all. Toilets clean, bar staff very friendly, good atmosphere and bloody marys to die for. We were only going to stay for one or two drinks but ended up stay for about 5 hrs. Will definitely visit again
G. T.
Generally the food and drink was excellent. Big issue was that our waiter apparently didn't want to be helpful with the gin list. Apparently they have 50 to choose from. We kept picking of the gin menu but he kept saying, we don't have that. Apparently they don't stock most if their own menu?
A. S.
Lovely old pub in the City, not far from At Paul's. Well kept ales, good selection of keg beers. Fish and chips was well cooked and really tasty. Will be back.
W. W.
Looks amazing and cool like something of Harry Potter the food was amazing I had the Vegan burger but with fries not chunky chips and their fries are alot like mc d ones but alot healthier taste and texture to it but if you don't want them lightly salted from the get go say so cause they will salt them for you. Of your a gravy lover the gravy doesnt run away off your plate its firm but not to thick but if you want it on the side make sure you triple check that they do because if you send it back all they will do is drain it out but you should demand a fresh cook cause that's not right otherwise it's not professionally corrected. Atmosphere is very chilled out and calm collecting. The workers are very understanding as well when it comes to fault fixing and keep it professional. OVER ALL it's really good place to come and have a feast and you want some what of a unique experience.
L. B.
Simply gorgeous pub building - however inside it's rather cramped - tables are very close together. We only visited because they were on the Tastecard site, but when I asked for the discount they tried really hard to get out of it - they did honour the offer in the end, I had to be quite pushy. Shame as it really let down the experience, the food was very nice and the gin cocktail was also great.
N. J.
Friendly atmosphere and good food
C. H.
Nice pub, good beer selection and decent service. Far more spacious than the outside would suggest; perfect boozer for a few drinks after work on a Friday
R. M.
Great bowl of chips. Cellular reception is best on the right as you walk in; very poor in the left front; not tested further back.
Lovely friendly staff. Visit on a Sunday (when Temple Church is closed).
R. K. B.
The food was average, the service was willing if you asked for it. The tables were sticky and we asked for them to be cleaned before we sat down. However, we were in a group and we didn't mind having to go to the counter to place our orders and a good time was had by us all. It was one of the few places in the area open on a Sunday evening.
r. h.
Friendly, efficient staff. Well kept cask ale in beautiful setting full of history and heritage.
Ian (staff member) was very helpful and chatty.
Will be visiting again on my next trip to London.
K. L.
Lovely little pub on Fleet Street. Decent beer selection and the standard pub food is good (they pride themselves on not buying read-made tarts, etc.).
Plenty of space and the skylights are gorgeous.
Named after the satirical magazine and apparently not the domestic abuse puppet!
B. P.
Great fish and chips and gin drinks were also good! Pretty classic pub. Wouldn't deviate too much from the classic English dishes the Caesar salad wasn't too great and oddly warm.
H. R.
What can I say. Pretty decent
D. H.
The perfect ambiance for a drink or two with friends. Considering the crowd that gathers in the end of the evening it can get quite noisy. However, it's normal for people to come when there are such good drinks and food available. I'd come here every night if I could but I don't because whenever I happen to enter here, it gets way past midnight before I'd go home.
T. C.
Always quick efficient service. Really good pub food. Loos felt like dungeon, but absolutely fine. Don't miss it. A v good experience in busy London.
N. G.
Me and my friends stumbled on this by accident and what a hidden gem of a bar. Literally an old Victorian London bar and looks unchanged. Still City of London bar prices but the look and feel of having a drink, sit and chat with the aesthetic appeal is just enjoyable. Would visit again.
J. H.
I go back now and again as it has rather a nice interior, but it seems to increasingly be turning into more of a wine bar / restaurant. Given that you're so spoiled for excellent pubs on Fleet Street I'd generally decide to go elsewhere if I only have time for one drink... but don't object to including it on a crawl.
L. B.
Smart looking place, love the big skylight! Sadly they need to work on their bar snack rotation as it was a bit stale. Comments about this were met with "well that's how it is" so not ideal. Otherwise a bit more of an upmarket look, sadly staff don't hold up the standard
M.
Same as it was 25 years ago. Good thing.
C. K.
Lovely pub had works xmas do great food and reasonable aswell.

Great atmosphere and staff. They have two sitting areas, one of which is usually quiet and good for relax or meetings. Reasonable selection of beers and drinks. Also good for food!
d. w.
Great lunchtime food deal. I would happily have paid much more for the burger. The staff were very attentive.
R. S.
Fantastic service at Punch. Bar staff are very friendly especially Patricia and Alex! Great food also and reasonable prices for central.
K. L.

Brilliant London vibe

Lovely pub, old and quirky yet modern at the same time.
The landlord is a larger than life character. Really nice historical pub.
D. J. M.
Marvellous, elegant And fine Foods and Ales... Alas, Rap music no matter how low its played... Is not in keeping with the Ambience... So a little disappointed.... Perhaps turn it off completely.... As was suggested by the American family on the very next table to myself...... All that luxury, and Rap music... Heaven preserve us... Enjoyed everything else.. Tho...
Many thanks to the Mystery Management,
Yes of course I'll return and yes If music offends I will gladly ask you to assist... I'm always delighted when I have the opportunity to enjoy an old school Puplic House, which has been kept mostly original... You just can't buy anything like it.... So cheers and well done.... Recomend ®

Cosy little pub 👌
G. H.
What a gem of a find. A much better pub than many celebrated pubs in the area that get good trip advisor reviews. Nicely modernised old fashioned pub with friendly service and great beer.
J. B.
First class food and staff had my dad's wake there, couldnt have been better. Jack and the staff were excellent. Food the best!! Thank you for being so great on the day, much appreciated.
J. N.
Fantastic food, and wine, fast service and polite staff, great well played out English pub, in the heart of the city.
A. W.
Dropped in for lunch, quick service and nice meal. Good selection of gins and whiskies so will have to go back another time to sample.
M. H.
Another visit to a wonderful pub. Friendly staff. Good range of alcohol too. As it's Christmas you must try the Titanic Plum porter.
K. J.
I really liked their espresso ☕ and they also have two craft beers on tap. 🍻 Quite a nice pub altogether. 🙂

Was concerned about the location of the place, and whether it would be too dingy for a summer's evening. Whilst a place with outdoor space would have been preferred; the Punch Tavern was light inside, due to sky lights and showcases some original tiling. Stowford Press and Mean Time lager on tap sealed the deal
R. E.
Really really great place
The bar is good for an IPA or two, the small outdoor covered area is great if it's raining
It's close to Thameslink and good bus routes
And the food is very very good and not too overboard on price
K. S.
A well-stocked gin palace in central London, perfect for a quick break while sightseeing, or for a drink after work. Great location, interesting interior, astoundingly large selection of gins on hand.
