Reviews of The Alwyne Castle
T. P.
Decent pub, good atmosphere when we went on a Thursday night. Stocking lots of Camden, but pleasantly surprised to see a Five Points on tap too. Many other ales on offer too
J. K.
We booked a table at 5 pm. Everything was very COVID strict. You can order your Drinks and food via QR Code and Pay online. Everything will be served at your table then. Great Pub!
S. D.
Visited on Saturday to meet with Johnny re booking the conservatory for a private event. It's a super friendly pub and the conservatory is beautiful with it's own private outdoor space. It accommodates up to 80 people and we have opted for a buffet for our guests. £250 deposit is required but that can either be returned on the day or used as a bar tab. We have booked!
We also stayed to have a bite to eat and drinks. We were not disappointed.
B. S.
Fantastic spot to sit outside after a nice walk or cycle. Laid back and you can order your drinks/food from the table making it easy to go with groups.
J. D.
Great place for a Sunday dinner.
Is not cheap & there's no children's menu, but worth it.
Excellent service, delicious food.
D. M.
A nice atmosphere with lovely food with gluten free and vegan options and outdoor seating available. And lovely staff
However the heaters for the out door seating area wasnt working sooo i was so cold.
P. H.
It’s been a while eating at a pub but today was no disappointment. Expectations were exceeded. I was lucky to get a walk in table for 2 and was happy to wait 90 mins. Ordering was easy online. But let’s talk about the food. Without any exaggeration, the chicken and pancetta pie is the best individual pie I have eaten anywhere. I will say no more on that, but I definitely recommend the chips as they were the perfect accompaniment. The photo really doesn’t do it justice as this was stunning!
R. A.
Nice pub with an outdoors area. Clearly a popular place
B. A.
Fantastic food! We ordered the steak pie and fish and chips, both were excellent. The steak pie was the best I’ve had in a pub. Busy, good selection of beer and cider on tap. Big outdoor area. Worth a visit if you are around the area.
R. L.
Great pub with loads of outdoor seating. The staff were really friendly and sat us near a big heater, which was amazing. Clear Covid guidelines, which made us feel safe, but still made for a fun night.
N. H.
This place has gone uphill since a few years ago. The staff are very helpful, the menu is good as is the drinks list.
A. S.
We were a big group seated outside for a leaving party. To be fair, we were being a nuisance, blocking the door in and out of the pub with our group, but the staff handled it well. Food and drinks were great (especially the GF session IPA) and served efficiently. Absolutely no complaints
E. W.
Great boozer. Large selection of beverages, from beers and gins to wine. We watched the euros in the beer garden here and the service from the team was great. We ordered a large selection of bar snacks, both veggie and non veggie, and all were tasty. The service was that great the team even handed out ponchos when it started to rain.
T.
I've been there for the first time today. Lovely place and very tasty food. I had the nut roast with roasted vegetables. Very yummy! I definitely recommend this place and I will come back soon. Also the service is on point!
W. W.
I’ve been here several times over the years and had some good memories of drinking in the garden. This is only the second time having food here, but it was not as good as I had remembered. The squid starter was amazing, but the £13.50 fish and chip looked rather disappointing without peas! It looked like a plate of beige...
Oh and my friend wants me to mention the wobbly table :)
B.
zach was very welcoming, hospital and made our dining experience very pleasant .
The food was lovely , although need to get the roast potatoes to a better standard .
Other than that , wiii certainly come here again . Thank you .
S. E.
Nice spot! Outdoor seating, lovely little corners to cotch up in, very charming staff, nice little garden area out the back... it's very child friendly so you'll have a lot of kids running about. Otherwise a gem
S. W.
Decent pub. Service could be improved in the restaurant, but think it was opening week issues
S.
Really pretty pub inside. Massive garden, the staff are particularly lovely. We tried the bar snacks - wow- the chirizo, cod goujons and halloumi fries are fantastic. Great selection of wines too.
R. G. P.
So I find myself updating my previous bad review from a month ago (below) due to the effort by The Alwyne to make it right when things go wrong.
Manuel, the General Manager, invited us back to the pub and we had a great time.
Glad to see places and people who care about customer experience and are willing to go the extra mile to get it right.
Thank you very much, Manuel and team.

Never again.
Nice beer garden, but avoid this place if you are not up to getting abuse from staff. The lady who came to close the area on Thursday night must have had a bad day and took personally a harmless comment by one of my friends to another (not directed at the lady), who, having half a pint to go, said: "if we can't sit outside or indoors, where do we go?" Lady jumps in with a horrible tone and attitude "you can go home." Manager comes and just backs up the attitude saying that my friend was being fussy since we arrived when he had some trouble checking in without the NHS app.

This place has recently been redecorated. It's cleaner more open and perfect for Sunday lunch. I love this place for my Sunday roast they have a fantastic beer garden and a Victorian style sun room where I like to eat. Beware as you can be forgotten about with table service on a busy day. Best solution is to head to the bar and order there. The food portions are perfect and the beer selection is always good. It has a really nice relaxed atmosphere of a weekend. It can be busy but I find Sundays usually has some quiet spots. If your after a good Sunday roast in Islington this is well worth a visit.
A. T.
Lovely place, great atmosphere, but DON'T order a Guinness; I ordered one from two different members of staff, and neither was poured correctly.

❤️ The Alwyne Castle is always my go to pub when I’m in and around Highbury Corner. This is a good size boozer which is light and airy with a conservatory at the back. One of the big plus points of this pub is the massive beer garden which is pretty much located on all sides of the pub and great for those warmer months. There is always a relaxed atmosphere here whenever I visit and it’s a nice place for either a quiet drink or to enjoy a bite to eat. I have eaten here a couple of times and the food has been great and reasonably priced. The beer selection is good, I had the Meantime London Lager on this visit which was a decent pint.
.
The Alwyne Castle is a classy establishment offering decent beer and tasty food, well worth a visit if you’re in N1.

A black gentleman working there he was extremely nice & polite I didnt catch his name but he had a scar next to his right eye what a amazing bloke absolute grafter !! On the other hand I did see some abuse thrown towards him by the management and talking down on him for no reason, especially some blonde hair bloke that works there. Over all after the arsenal game it was lovely atmosphere the bouncer was extremely polite we found him funny ! - and I would reccomend anyone to visit. Personally I dont believe it was quite nice of the magmegment to de-grade the fella due to the colour of his skin but overall experience was great ! Please visit !
J. S.
Friendly service, quite quick and efficient. Very good burger and excellent chips! And a very good beer selection too.
C. M.
Had an awesome night at The Alwyne, as usual. Special mention to Zak, who was very patient with all of us, whilst we asked many questions and were generally a pain! 😹 He is an asset!
K. L.
This place was a godsend just after the 3rd lockdown. Lovely pub especially during the summer.
E. S.
Great outdoor space and cute indoor. Food options for gluten free aren’t great unfortunately
P. S.
We had a great night at The Alwyne Castle for our staff summer get together. Kieran, Ronni & Simone were wonderful hosts and the management team made sure everything was taken care of promptly and with ease. The Conservatory is a love space which could comfortably house 30 people, and the 3 course dinner menu was delicious.
C. G.
Lovely food (had the squash risotto), nice wine and our waiter Zak was v attentive
R. W.
Big outdoor seating areas, most are covered with umbrellas and there are a few heaters dotted around. We were walk ins on Wednesday afternoon and got a table, but was pretty busy when we left. A good spot for a few drinks!
J. H.
Very nice pub, friendly atmosphere and great service!
J. J.
Haven't had food here yet however there is a huge selection of drinks and the staff are great. So much seating and a great heated outdoors area.
D. M.
Great experience! Zak our server was very friendly and attentive, the food was also great.
M. B.
Usually we love this place! Last time, not so much after it reopened, we were just a bit dissapointed. The table inside was not cleaned so we cleaned it with sanitiser and tissues (the tissue was so dirty). There were dogs inside the dining area...I mean I absolutely love dogs, but I don't remember seeing any last many times we visited before lockdowns. It would be nice to be warned (you warn about food allergies so you should do the same warning message when people are booking tables). Did not enjoy barking and dogs' hair around my food. Outside is fine, but inside...not sure about this.
H. E.
Went for a friends birthday and it was great, lively atmosphere and nice people
A. S.
First time visit with our eldest daughter her hubby and 2 grandsons. We had a lovely meal and drinks. Staff were very friendly. We were also joined by my son in laws sister Jessica who works there
A. S.
I do like this QR code system for ordering drinks and food. Worked very well today. Menu is compact as you would expect as businesses work back up to normal. A great lunch, great service. Thanks.
R. B.
Nice pub. Good beer garden out front in the summer. Ok selection of beers and ok service hence 4 not 5
D.
Nice pub with excellent table service. Guiness had a bit of a head on it though for that u get only 4 stars
H. J.
Nice place, beautiful building, great area, food decent, but the staff are clearly not up to scratch. Rude at the door, even ruder in the smoking area. Was v aggressively asked to leave by a large masked man until I showed my table booking, and was made to feel unwelcome. I understand these are testing times, but I’ve noticed a similar review noting this bad attitude, so perhaps some extra training is needed?
Would love to leave a better review, but this just left a bit of a bad taste unfortunately.
a. k.
Super friendly and helpful staff that helped to navigate through these confusing pandemic times and it's rules. Staff was very accommodating and gave us a table in their conservatory.
Sadly the food isn't really that great, the burger was rather very dry and tasteless but we ate it anyways out of desperation.
S. M.
Really large inside and a nice outdoor patio. Food is delicious, and drinks are what you expect at a pub.
Q. B.
Nice food, good range of beers and great service from Zach as well
K. R.
Always love The Alwyne Castle. Staff are great, food is yummy and the beer is cold.
There’s usually a dog or two about too!
Looking forward to my next visit!
C. S.
In the summer sun, the Alwynne castle has such an amazing outside terrace. The vibes are good and it’s a really good sized beer garden for its location.
It’s situated a few mins walk from the highbury Islington station, and there a bus stop nearby too so it’s quite conveniently located.
They have an average selection of beer (better than a lot of bars in London though) and their padron peppers bar snack is really good too.
While the outside terrace is amazing, it is situated really closely to the road so it can be a bit noisy.
H. I.
Fantastic food. Loads of vegan choice. Friendly staff. Quick service on Friday afternoon!
V. M.
Really nice place. Just wished the staff was a bit more respectful. I understand they might deal with drunk people all the time but it is not a reason to patronise others.
K. C.
Great for outside seating. App is easy to use. Careful with food allergies, however service not as efficient without the app ordering.
J. P.
Finally visited this pub last week and it was very disappointing. The food was okay, nothing special but the service was awry. Staff running around not knowing who was serving what table, couldn't get their attention for 10 minutes so walked up to the bar only to have the guy say rather rudely "I've got 5 other orders!" So we sat back down and waited another 5 minutes to be served. Looks like a great pub with the outdoor area but with the average food and disappointing service we wont be back. Especially with other great bars in the area!
F. H. B.
Could be more cheaper food options, but it's a good pub
D. L.
Had a lovely night here a couple of nights ago. Outside table with heaters on either side. Service was prompt - attentive but not pushy. All the Christmas lights are pretty sweet too.
Z.
Great burgers & atmosphere, but food service can be slow when Arsenal playing locally.
E.
Great roast. Great drinks. Great service. Highly recommend
L. S.
One of my favourite pubs, always a great atmosphere and friendly staff. Great pub garden and inside is good too. I feel sorry for the bar staff as they seem busy and overworked, could do with hiring a few more people.
H. R.
Great staff. Atmospheric pub, with a sunday dinner to die for will be a regular here
N. D.
I don’t understand why the service is so poor. The food is high quality but I had my main course served before my stater whilst sat outside while it was 4 degrees. When I pointed out this was unusual it was met with a teenage defensiveness.
If they say they will stagger your cousrses as normal, don’t believe them!
This is my local, I really am very disappointed!
G. M.
Food was deli-licious. Zak was a great at hosting 👍🏻👍🏻
B. F.
Fun pub with a great trivia night/pub quiz! Cozy atmosphere with delicious food.
T. I.
Brilliant service and great food. The roasts are spot on
C. F.
Really cool spot but just had a weird experience with the staff. Nonetheless it's a very good pub with an awesome outdoor.
H. S.
Had a great meal and drinks with my partner tonight at Alwyne Castle. Amazing veggie meal options. Super easy to understand Covid rules. They also have heaters with is a added bonus! Would recommend for anyone wanting a cosy and easy night out.
M. V.
This place is fantastic; love the beer garden, the staff are amazing (thanks Dan!) and it’s been a great place to watch football
C. V.
Friendly service and very decent food
Would visit again 😊
L. N.
Food is average but good range of drinks and massive outdoor seating area, great for after work!
T. H.
Lovely boozer with loads of outdoor tables and a friendly and helpful team. Currently it's outdoor dining with ordering via a QR code.
E. P.
It used to be better regarding food. I tried their burger recently with my friends and we got very disappointed. Food was not so good plus they make you pay extra if you want normal chips on the dish instead of the purple oven chips that comes with the dish! So put some extra money for the chips and they were undercooked. Funny enough they write on their menu they are triple cooked 😂😂!! If you are a burger fun don't waste your money other than that drinks and environment are pretty good therefore the 3 stars.
D. G.
Fantastic beer garden and great for watching football outdoors. Good selection of beers. Food not as good as it should have been (menu looked good though) and service a bit poor (a bit grumpy-cool). Otherwise a great place for a few summer drinks. Very busy when football on.
K. F.
Fine for drinks but outdoor seating prepare to wait a while for service. Pub food is ok (but do not order the salads),when we went though we had food missing and were over charged.
E. C. G.
Very e spacious outside to enjoy the sun or a evening with friends. Staff very friendly
S. H.
Absolutely fantastic meal. Great work with the balance between COVID guidance and people having a release. Made for a stress free evening. Great indoor and outdoor space. Will definitely be back
D. W.
I've never had to wait so long for a drink in my life. Service was stunning, everyone was friendly, food was A+, obviously the managers fault. Would give 6 stars if i could
B. C.
It was fantastic roast dinner! Me and my wife visited and it was my wife's first roast dinner in England she absolutely enjoyed it. And also service was excellent! Thank you very much all and keep good quality!!
M. L.
Zak was so wonderful to us we're coming back tomorrow.
J. S.
Came here to get a bite before a gig. Burger and a pint for £10.95? Hell yeah. And really tasty too. Sensible selection of great beers, friendly staff....what's not to like? Nearly every table was reserved at 7pm on a Weds ...so you know this place is consistent. Thank you guys....will be back!
C. J.
Good service, high quality food and drinks at reasonable prices. Good Sunday lunch venue.
J. G.
Brilliant food, great service (by Zak)
M. M.
A really large beer garden with a fun variety of seating options. The wine selection looked good, with lots of quirky labels to choose from. We had lunch on a Saturday and they catered for vegetarians. I had a quinoa and red pepper burger which wasn't AMAZING but was definitely nice enough. Kid and dog friendly with board games for all.
O. O.
Great pub with friendly staff and a good selection of beers. Plenty of choice for food and drink plus comfortable seating inside and out. Separate bar outside at certain times. Would thoroughly recommend. 》Please like helpful reviews《
E. G.
A+!!!!! Food and drink were spot on led by zack & then followed by the lovely Lucy, couldn't of been more looked after , many thanks all ;) will be bringing the family back
T. B.
I went there not to long ago and I can say the food was really nice. love the sweet potato fries and the mushroom risotto was yummy 😋
The pudding was great but after the massive order of food I didn't get to enjoy my pudding.☹️ But it tasted nice will definitely be going back for my Eton mess presentation was also a hit too.
Drinks was fast and Services altogether was great will be definitely going back. and may I just add I'm not a pub lover and that was the first time eating in one but it's a beautiful place you will be surprised.
S. C.
The food was as always very good, there was a vegan menu option although admittedly the waiter did not know that the pub sold vegan beer. He did laugh about it, which means he had a good sense of humour. Definitely recommend this pub. I have been here 6 times in the last 3 years, it doesn't disappoint.
B. L.
Good pub with really large sitting area outside.
J. C.
Good staff during pandemic etc. Nice selection of beers. Great outside area, nice big tables. Great that it has places to lock your bike.
D.
Good pub, probably the best outdoor space in Islington. It's huge...but it's massively let down by the slow service. No fault of the bar staff. It's the fixed card readers on the bar. Who's bright idea was that? It's good pub no question, but it could be a great pub with just one tweak
D. T.
Many outside tables and straightforward method to get drinks to the tables via an app. Limited number of outdoor heaters though.
W. N.
Large pub with much space outside, and an excellent choice of beers with IPA and lager. Good menu for vegetarians. The food is better than wetherspoons.
D. B.
Great beer selection and good food. Great atmosphere. Large seating area outside. Not a pub for watching sport but a great one to meet friends. Never had to wait more than 2 minutes for drinks and food has always arrived after an acceptable wait. I've been loads and never had the issues I've seen in other reviews.
J. P.
I am not sure how I reviewed the Alwyne Castle 4 days ago, I haven't been in a few weeks - possibly a weird google glitch?
This said, Alwyne Castle is definitely 5 stars! Fantastic staff, all the covid safe measures a boy could wish for, dog friendly, so my great big bear of a chocolate labrador has a great time there too.
A. B.
The Alwyne Arms was a nice place to catch up with a friend over beer after work. It was quiet and the bar staff seemed nice. I visited mid-week, so imagine the vibe would be different on a weekend however they had. A good selection of beers, including my friend’s favourite Belgian beer, which apparently is quite hard to find.
H. Q.
A friend and I had a good Sunday Roast Lunch here. We booked mid-morning for a 1pm booking. Service was very quick and food quality was good - representing reasonable value for money.
Admittedly the earlier Google reviews made my friend and I apprehensive - however our experience was far better than these reviews had let us to expect.
Caveat: our 1pm booking seemed early and it was quiet on arrival. By 2pm it was far busier and this will undoubtedly impact speed of service.
A. D.
Well organised. Book a table, turn up, scan the Q code, open the website and get drunk without having to move! Awesome...
J. S.
Not a bad boozer, really. Food is alright - not great, but not terrible either. Beers rotate fairly often, usually find a good pint. Quiz on a Tuesday night used to be top-notch, but the quizmaster has moved on and the new one is a bit lacklustre. Good big seating area outside if the weather's cooperating.
S. E.
Had a great time here, one of the most professional pubs I’ve been to in terms of COVID safety. Great service from the staff & some really tasty food too!
P. M.
Great Sunday roast 👌 and dog friendly 🐕
M. H.
The pub's recently revamped their menu with good results. Swordfish with brown rice, edamame and mango salad was excellent and only £12.50. A friend had the grilled asparagus starter which looked good. Sticky toffee pudding gets the thumbs up too. Standard pub grub still available: fish and chips, pie, sausage and mash.
Cecile is a positive, energetic quiz master with good pace. Love the rock paper scissors free drink rounds. Tuesday at 8pm and all wrapped up by 10 - perfect!
L. B.
Kayleigh gave amazing service and was super helpful and fun. :)
D. N.
Had a shared roast meal between two fairly hungry lads and didn't finish it. Really delicious and v generous.
Only downside is there's a lot of reserved tables and most of them were empty...
S. H.
All I can say is AMAZING, the food was delicious and the staff was so friendly and I would definitely recommend to everyone.
5 star all round
Thank you Alwyne castle 👍🏻❤️👍🏻❤️👍🏻❤️
G. K.
The only thing letting this bar down is its service. It is a great bar and has a nice outside beer garden. The bar staff take a long time to serve you and can be quite rude. The toilets are also not maintained to a very good standard.
S. B.
One of my favourite pubs in the area - great beer selection, good food, fantastic inside and out.
However, they NEEEED to sort out the bar service. All nice people, but slowest bar in London.
It takes long enough when it's quiet, but on a busy night you can forget about it.
With a faster bar service this pub would be a world beater.
A. J.
Really nice pub that's let down by appalling service. The staff are few and far between, and those that are serving move at a pace that would put snails to shame. Step it up! Still, I keep coming back because the outdoor area is great in summer and it has a nice ambiance. I guess I'm a sucker. If you want a pint served in under 10 minutes, don't come this way.
S. B.
Great place for nice food and drinks great staff and will be back soon for sure.
I. S.
Zack was friendly and gave us great service!
E. c.
Cozy pub with a good beer selection. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Friendly service, standard pub grub, OK roasts with veggie/vegan options. Kid and Dog friendly.
E. s.
Great outside area for summer time drinks and we had the massive loaf of bread with salted butter to nibble on which was great. Loos were pretty grimy though and could definitely do with some attention but an easy place to meet with outdoor options.
A. C.
Went here for a pre-gig dinner in Islington and was surprised at the quality of the food, really lovely chicken schnitzel, fish cakes and an excellent veggie burger. Staff knew what they were doing too. Very good.
D. J.
Have just celebrated my Dads 50th birthday here which I organised. Having searched high and low for a venue I came across the Alwyne castle. This venue stood out straight away for me, not only because of the beautiful rustic conservatory area, but also the events manager Lea, who was absolutely amazing from start to finish. Planning a party can be quite stressful but my millions of questions were answered always promptly and in detail, and I was never made to feel like I was badgering her. The whole booking and organising process was surprisingly pleasant and easy and all of my requests were met with no hassle.
The day of the event was everything we wished for and more! The conservatory area and garden makes a fantastic venue which can be used for sit down gatherings as well as full on dancing and partying. I found the staff to be extremely attentive and someone was always asking if we were OK or if we needed anything. The drinks came out on time and were constantly replenished without us having to ask. The food was delicious and went down great with my guests, especially the burgers which disappeared within seconds! Most importantly my Dad had a 50th birthday he will never forget and we owe that partly to the Alwyne castle team so THANK YOU! And I would 1000% recommend this venue
S. M.
This place is just what you want on a Friday night after work, good atmosphere, lots of places to sit, or loaf, or congregate, or smoke and a good selection of drinks. I could have stayed there all night. But I didn't. My loss.
R. R.
Very nice place, with tables outdoor. The food is very tasty (not to mention the beer....). And the service is very kind. I won't miss another visit on my next staying in this part of London.
j. A.
I do like this pub. The interior isn't much to speak of, but the big garden, in the summer, is lovely. A good beer selection, and some tasty food too, help to make this a nice place to be.
R. L.
I organised my boyfriend's 30th surprise party on Saturday and I couldn't be happier on how everything worked out perfectly. Phil, the manager took very good care of us and so did every single member of staff. It was a sunny Saturday and despite the fact the pub was packed, the service was excellent, quick and incredibly friendly. Great spot in North London and can't recommend it enough!!!
R. C.
Nice pub with good selection of drinks!
F. f.
Excellent food and great service from the delightful Shiloe. She really made our evening special, thank you to the whole team, including the kitchen of course
S. O.
Great spot for a drink after work, vast sitting space outside for the sunny days, decent selection of drinks but staff is slow, and the food/ side portion are tiny, we wanted some chips with the bear ordered 2 portions nearly a £5 each and they were tiny portions, enough to just fit in a teacup.
D. M.
Good beer and a great outside area and as a smoker that's always a plus, I've only eaten there once but it was good.
E. K.
Lovely big beer garden made a reservation for my Mums birthday, food was delicious and the staff were really friendly and they provided a great service.
P. C.
Nice local pub. Reasonable selection of beers.
R. R.
Great atmosphere with plenty of space outside. Good for dogs as well as children. Went for mid-afternoon food (1500) and they were serving the full menu.
J. C.
Nice beer garden let down by management leaving it short-staffed on a bank holiday, queues out the door to get served mid-afternoon. Staff are all great but they can’t serve quick enough to make up for it!
C. A.
Good, pub, decent food. Great energy outside
T. B.
Nice pub and great times with team
M. R.
This is a pub of two halves, the food was quite nice and there is a good 3 for £11 deal on bar snakcs which differ from the usual. The problem is the staff appear unable to handle busy times. When's it's empty its a nice relaxing pub serving good food. As soon as business get's busy they seem unable to handle serving food with any sort of speed or checking with you that everything is ok.
E. B.
Lovely pub, helpful staff and wonderful conservatory. I held leaving drinks here and we were well looked after. No charges to hold a table and great food!
S. B.
Delightful pub, restaurant and large beer garden. Nice selection of pub food. Meal served quickly and chips were excellent. Be careful though as the hours quickly slip by here.
M. R.
Very popular but not too busy on weekends, amazing energetic managers, helpful staff.
Missing star because the music was extremely loud as if you are in the club, the other reason is because of a woman in the toilet who got so drunk that she wasn't conscious - horrible view.
I would recommend selection of people that don't know when to stop drinking in terms of selling.
Overall, good place for groups of people and nice atmosphere.
J. K.
Thanks for a great time!
Great beer, friendly service and great chalkboards ;)
Would defo recommend to anyone in the area.
L. C.
Great pub with amazing beers and a buzzing atmosphere. Also, a brilliant menu with good gluten free and vegan options. Some beers a bit pricey.
S. K. P.
Lovely looking pub, standard chain pub food, but delivered well, nice staff but perhaps a little over ambitious with packing in the bookings at Christmas time which lead to a bit of jostling with neighbouring tables and a bit of rushing by the staff. This is our second Christmas lunch and we'd probably return again.
C. S.
Nice and crowded pub. Love the vibe and the quick table service
G. H.
Nice pub. For the last year possibly the world's most sour faced, grumpy barmaid has worked here. Hence loses a star. If I ever see her smile, even once, I'll bump it up to a five star review. Don't hold your breath.
B. S.
Did not try any food . Just here for a drink.
The outside area is very well planned. With plenty of covered seating areas.for a good old British summer.
L. S. (.
One of the Mitchell and Butlers that are abundant in London!
It was a Wednesday, £10 for a beer and burger.
The burger was really small and overdone, the beer took 3 attempts before it was drinkable.
But the building itself is very nice, the staff were really friendly and it was a decent location.
D. K.
Great pub just away from the madness of upper street which makes for a great place for a post work meal and catch up over a couple of drinks, or for a later louder affair. Food has always been good as is the service-
C. M.
Thank you so much for looking after everyone at our Christmas meal yesterday. Service was brilliant, you were all really helpful and food was very good. Everyone really enjoyed it 😊🎄
G. K.
Zack is the best. Great hair.
t. j.
I first started drinking in this pub over 40 years ago when I started working nearby. As you can imagine it has undergone many changes but still holds fond memories for me Light and lager, Guinness with cider to name just a few.
R. C.
Much nicer and cleaner decor than it used to have, but the prices are even higher than the West End. £5.45 for a pint of Peroni is just a blatant rip off. Shame - it could have been a really nice place to visit more often. I don't think other local pubs are losing customers to the Alwyne Castle.
S. D.
This is my favourite spot for summer drinks.. Really large garden and plenty of outdoor seating. Inside is a nice restaurant that serves good sharing boards, burgers and proper meals.
K. H.
Great pub. Good food. Large beer garden.
T. S.
Love this pub with big beer garden, but it's close to the road. Perfect in summer with a decent selection of generic beers (I.e. not really any craft beers) but food is excellent.
J. H.
Nice pub which has a good beer garden out front, great for sunny afternoon in the summer. Service let’s this place down a little which is why I’ve given this place 4* and not 5*
M. B.
Great selection of beers, surprisingly spacious inside. Huge outside drinking area - shame it's basically in a car park and overlooks a main road, but you take what you can in this part of North London!
A. R.
Great spot for a drink... However terribly understaffed when they expect it to be busy. Wait time of up to 70mins for food during lunch on a weekend.
D. M.
Spacious pub with drinks served fairly quickly despite the large numbers in there. The only place that I could find to have a quiet pint with friends before a game at the Emirates.
M. H.
Nice roast. Generous portions. Yorkshires were a bit dry and they were initially a bit tight on the gravy - but brought more when asked.
B. M.
visited recently and the roast dinner was amazing!!! didn’t catch her name but the short girl with brown hair gave amazing service wow
A. R.
Cozy pub with a fire. Good selection of local ales and beers. Good selection of wine. Lots of seating for what looks to be a great menu.
W. M.
Nice food, very good selection of beers (although I was unlucky to pick 2 types that just run out), loads of outdoor and indoor space. Good place to watch sports.
L. D.
Loads of outdoor seating. Doing a good job seating everyone and staying safe during a pandemic. Food was good too!
A. H.
Had a really great time here in their beer garden. Great service and great beer. What more could i ask for??
D. G.
Good pub, huge garden, designed for a good drinking session rather than food but I've never eaten there so...
P. S.
Lots of room for people, good table service. Taking safety seriously with covid in mind
L.
The pub itself it quite nice and there's a lot of outdoor seating. Food is okay - quite nice, but the drinks are fairly expensive and the queues for the bar are unbelievably long.
T. S.
Great pub - however I had my phone stolen by someone coming up to the table and pretending to ask for money. Staff said it happens unfortunately....
R. A.
A mediocre pub that isn't too far from H&I station, so a handy meeting place. Service is a bit slow, beer selection is alright, but could be better.
J. S.
Years ago, I won the pub quiz here as the girls marking our test cheated for us so the annoying loudmouths wouldn't win. Been back several times since and the conversatory offers a nice place for a catch up with friends away from busy Upper St. Pulled pork topped burgers are fantastic.
S. A.
Spectacular food, we had a range from the menu and nothing disappointed. Definitely go for the pub quiz, that was hilarious hearing the other teams play
G. B.
What a great place! Informal and friendly pub with lots of spots where to be seated. Love it! Don't miss the game night, it's brilliant!!!
N. P.
Great pub with huge outdoors space with heaters for when it's cold. Music inside is VERY loud which makes it quite hard to have a conversation.
G. W.
this pub has so much potential as the beer garden is great but the food is mediocre and the service is soooooooo slow!!! need more staff especially in the summer when the pub is heaving!
S. C.
Great place for a Sunday roast. Great staff. No issues with our large 12 person booking. Will return without a doubt.
D. L. M.
One my favourite pubs in Islington. Great outside area in the summer and good beer selection. Food is not bad either but not the best in the area.
G. R.
Good pub with a selection of quality beers. The food is first rate, the baked Camembert is a good starter to go with a cold pint.
J. K. T.
Great atmosphere. Reasonable Sunday lunch - i'd say slightly on the pricey side for what was otherwise a good roast.
P. F.
A bit of a wait at the bar (20-30min) when busy. Staff are friendly tho.
B. s. b. V.
Amazing food and great service! All of my friends were really happy so we will definitely come again! Thank you!
T. M.
Nice music, nice food
G. H.
A great pub. Nice and warm and friendly, good menu, nice staff. Good location just a few mins from Highbury and Islington tube.
J. H.
Friendly staff and good seating options (including outside). Good fries too!
V. V.
Large outdoor space with lots of seating outside. Decent selection of drinks. Average prices, staff seemed friendly enough.
T. A.
Nice venue great outdoor space for bigger groups, nice selection of drinks, food looks good too. Great family place
R. K.
This pub just gets more and more popular, great for a winter's day and basking in the sun in their beer garden in the summer. Always a great selection on tap and with their small bites
A. G.
As soon as I walked in. I felt that it was Familia to me. Lovely Oak range flooring, contained Vestry Style boothes as well as great little Aspheric furnishings & NOTABLE touches.
Make it a bit more shade in the UK than in out Shake it all about!
Seriously though it is a Standard bearer for Well Done in the borough of HIBRY&IZZY~LDN*.
Banging on the drum. Lovely bit of KIT.
Rating~SUPREME.
If ida gotta the Ggzz.No... Would have got a SUPREME*[Highestrating]... Princely sum, Nearly KingSized.
Luv Lee#¥~*§
Cracking Place.
N. F.
Went for the Pub Quiz on Tuesday - great selection of beers and food was nice too.
C. G.
The Alwyne Castle is an Islington institution. A short walk from Highbury and Islington station, it is a great place to meet friends. In the summer the large beer garden is understandablely popular and crowded. The food menu is extensive, but this isn't a cheap place.
L. W.
Nice food, nice beer and nice garden. Can’t tell you’re by a main road
A. B.
Service is extremely slow. Staff doesn't seem to be able to deal with multiple customers at once. Eg asking the next one what they want while letting the previous one pay, etc Many times have given up queuing. Only go there in summer for the outdoor space.
M. M.
Lovely pub in a great (slightly hidden) location. Nicely decorated inside, good for groups, shame it closes rather early!
R. R. (.
Excellent pub and Will is a cracking manager. We shall be visiting again soon.
A. E.
A bit crowded and plastic skiffs but arsenal were playing that night so probably why. Some good beers, but could do with a larger selection.
D. S. B.
Great venue, staff are so wonderful.
C. K.
Nice pub, good booze. Can be a pain when showing the footie. Whacking great beer garden out front. Good for groups. or not, as it were.
S. S.
The best thing about this pub is the beer garden.
The only thing letting it down is the way the staff serve the customers.
They dont take note of whos next. they just serve anyone.
S. C.
Very nice place, with a big terrace. Good service and the food was also very good, with lots of vegetarian options!
K. E. G.
Decent drinks prices and nice outdoor and indoor space however the ground is slightly uneven making it a little wobbly on some chairs , nice chips however pricey considering such a small portion
M.
Average food and beer selection, the location isn't great next to a busy road, but the large outdoor space is good during the summer
k. D.
Very Nice, young Team.
10 people ordered food and it all came together.
Well done kitchen..
Also very affordable..
M. M.
Spacious pub, with lots of outdoor space if its a nice day.
Has beer and your average pub food. Can't go wrong :)
C. G. D. S.
Massive beer garden! Would be great for the summer there's also booths outside with heating lamps, Nice beer selection, food was great all round lovely great pub.
N. M.
Good beer selection and food better than average. Shame about lack of seating inside. But great in summer
O. P.
Great beer garden, decent pub food, could use a little more atmosphere but hey:
1) It's big and there is always space, especially outside
2) It's super close to both I&Hi and Canonbury Tube stations
3) Service is very friendly and efficient
4) They play a lot of sports on TV and have a selection of board games
So I guess that's your Sunday afternoon sorted.
D. B.
Good beer selection and good pub food.
On Wednesdays there is an offer at dinner, with a burger and a pint of beer for 10£.
J. B.
Nice big pub, a few different craft beers on tap, and a HUGE outdoor area. It's a great place to be on a hot day!
L. O.
Well what more can you ask when the weather is great and some beautiful people all enjoying a drink peacefully in the beer garden 👍...and also met one of the famous Arsenal blogger James N👍
A. G.
Lovely, local pub with a nice bar staff.
Fast outside space great for the warmer months.
T. H.
Really nice pub and always busy but the inside bar area could do with being redecorated.
R. C.
A typical pub with a good atmosphere and good beers. A nice place to come with your friends. I like this place.
D. M.
It’s been updated in the last couple of years and all the better for it. Typical gastro fair, with its share of craft, and a beer garden in the converted car park
J. W.
Nice bar, chilled ambience, good selection of drinks. Food quality was poor - rubbery burger. Staff had a lukewarm attitude.
D. H.
A nice friendly pub. Great on a rare day of nice London weather.
Friendly and helpful staff but nothing amazing !
J. L.
Good food, lively gastropub for Friday night dinner + drinks with large outdoor area

P. M.
Great pub, ideal for catching up with mates, parties or even just a pint or two prior to heading to Arsenal
A.
Nice gastropub with pretty good food. I had the risoto, very tasty but small portion. Reasonable prices.
D. V.
Nice beers, but the portion of chips was drenched in oil and fried for so long they became hard as stone!
J. L.
Great food & drinks, and loads of outside space with heaters
E. A.
Average pub. Food is decent but it doesn't make the most of its outdoor space.
H. D.
Nice pub, good vibes
D. D.
Wonderful steak - one of the best I've eaten in the area! Im going to come back again.
M. N.
Really nice/huge front of pub terrace. They do decent chips and amazing chicken Kiev.
J. S.
Great pub before Arsenal matches as you don't have to queue for 30 mins to get a drink!
B. A.
A great pub, however and great atmosphere inside! However the service is really slow as the place is usually crowded.
J.
Nice pub with big outside space and good beer selection. Shame that service always seems to be inexplicably slow.
F. P.
Good beers and a very big outdoor area. Good to watch sports. An ideal pub for sunny days
A. C.

This is a pub of two halves, the food was quite nice and there is a good 3 for £11 deal on bar snakcs which differ from the usual. The problem is the staff appear unable to handle busy times. When's it's empty its a nice relaxing pub …
