Reviews of The Clarence Tavern

Eaten here many times now and every time they deliver. Super friendly staff, excellent natural wine list with some hard to find bottles at very fair prices. Food is wonderful; hearty and made with love. The pies are always incredible! Just wish I lived closer.
F. G.
Arranged a group lunch at the private room upstairs. The menu was amazing and the staff were amazing with the group. Service was really attentive . The wine list was really good and the staff were very knowledgeable.

A gem! Gastropub Clarence serves up really delicious food, that is simultaneously down-to-earth delicious, beautifully presented and per a menu board always celebrating regional and seasonal specialities. I have been several times. A small team of professionals serve with pride👌
1 Star is missing - I seem to find only natural wines, so if this is not your thing.....
S. S.
Food is great...though given that I asked for a specific table which they were happy to book for me , rather disappointing that they had given the table away because "we don't reserve for under 6 people" Fine ...but it would have been nice to be told that originally

Perfect Sunday Roast - super chilled atmosphere, lovely menu which is ever evolving, couldn’t recommended the roast lamb for 2 enough! We followed it with a chocolate mouse and washed down with a lovely orange wine. Felt suitably full after, one of our favourite spots in Stokey.
A. B.
Most certainly our favourite pub in London. The food never disappoints, nor does the wine.
Their pie is exquisite, as is their slow cooked lamb. And the sides to go with these are delicious too - couldn't recommend more!
L. B.
Consistently brilliant. From the (very good) restaurant-quality food, to the seasonal menu, to the fantastic wine list. Also benefits from an impressive makeover including a Covid-friendly deck. Worth mentioning too the staff who are knowledgeable, professional and friendly. As a local, I shouldn’t share the secret but too good to keep to myself.

Will happily return to the Clarence Tavern in Stoke Newington. Menu was interesting and we were told it changes everyday. Look forward to trying more of their dishes. Staff were helpful with the menu.
T. H.
Really friendly staff, popped in for a quick drink before a meal elsewhere not knowing the place. Glad I found it, looking forward to trying the food too, the menu looked great. Chris was lovely and very accommodating even made a alteration to my cocktail on request!
E. L.
The food was nice enough, but the wait was quite long.
My pork shoulder dish was incredibly small for the price paid (£19), and the glasses of wine were very small.
Other dishes that were being served around me seemed very large in comparison.
C. H.
Seasonal menu with an amazing natural and fine wine list! I started with grilled asparagus with walnut ketchup and ham croquettes, followed by Hake perfectly cooked. Accompanying me in the drinks section was a lovely Jura Chardonnay from Marnes Blanche! Attentive, professional and very friendly/knowledgeable staff, would recommend to anyone with a taste for great food and wine x
M. C.
Incredible food, lovely attentive staff. We were so well looked after for my bday bash. Everyone was blown away with the food and service. Huge thanks to everyone for making it so special. Will be back very soon

Enjoyed a lovely lunch on their terrace today.
Will be back.

We’ve dined at The Clarence twice in the past 6 months and sadly both times the food and service were underwhelming. On our most recent visit we were hoping to have a pie but they’d run out (which is excusable but disappointing) so we had the rib of beef instead. We had it on our first visit and it was overcooked and tough so we sent it back but were met with quite a defensive reception. We were left feeling very disappointed but decided to give them a second chance given the excellent reviews both from the public and press.
Our second visit was better but we requested the rib of beef be cooked rare and it was still medium-rare/medium which is just a shame given the cut of meat. There was no check-back during the meal and when the plates were cleared they didn’t ask whether everything was satisfactory.
There were positives and I hate writing a negative review so I would like to highlight how excellent the starter was as well as the potato dauphinoise that came with the beef and the sticky toffee pudding. Hopefully we’ve just been very unlucky twice but all I’d advise is that you don’t go for the rib of beef!

Sweet little pub on the corner in Stoke. They let us stumble in looking like NoMads with suitcases and bags and yet didn’t raise an eyebrow. Served us drinks with a smile on their face and it was just what we needed after travelling. Wish we could have stayed for longer but hoping to be back one day!
A. P.
Best fish and chips ever and the lamb sausages are absolutely divine! Definitely you need to try The chocolate block ( South African wine).
J. P.
Booked the private room at the Clarence for my 30th. The room looked beautiful and they printed out personalised menus which was a nice touch. Demi, our waiter, was particular good - keeping up with all the martini orders and every course came exactly at the time I had suggested.
I’m always blown away when I eat at the Clarence but it was impressive to see it rolled out for a big group. Thank you for giving me and the guests such a special memory!
C. H.
The food at the Clarence is consistently good. Well-chosen and cooked meat and great sides, including a magical gratin dauphinois. The specials board is key, with its countdown of available portions. The wine list is well-chosen, interesting and (for London) well-priced.
S. S.
Outstanding. The Stoke Newington food scene would be a sad place without it. Come for the seasonal Bellini, stay for the treacle tart. Excellent staff too.

Sam and his team hosted our wedding reception in the private room upstairs in August. They took our booking at short notice (thank you, pandemic) and couldn't have done any more for us - meeting in person to refine the menu and matching and tasting wines beforehand (Sam's wine knowledge is second to none - he worked with us to understand our tastes, whilst considering what would bring out the flavours in the food, and all his recommendations were spot on), letting us drop off flowers on the day and arranging the room as we requested. By this point I had total confidence it would good, but the quality of the food and service on the day still managed to surpass even our own high expectations and elevated the whole day to feeling like the special occasion it was. All this pulled off during the most challenging of times for restaurateurs - thank you guys, it's no exaggeration to say you well & truly saved the day! Jo & Joe (a quick aside for future brides - if you're getting married at Clissold House/ the Town Hall then the short walk up Church st makes for some lovely photos) Photo credit - John Sanders

Lovely inside, awesome high quality gastro pub style good, very attentive staff, and they were extremely accommodating with our young toddlers for an early evening meal
M. S.
The staff was super nice and the food was tasty. Specially the crab and squid ink toast. Great atmosphere.
j. b.
Spacious, sparse and simple with a terrace and “beer garden.”
Emphasis firmly here on the food which is light years beyond your local pub-grub or gastro-pub pretentious.
A sweeping beer and wine selection that’s bound to challenge expectations.
Staff, diligent, efficient and pleasant.
Overlook the unremarkable interior, there’s much to savour here.
J. O.
Not that I had a lot of lamb in my life, but that was probably the best I had in my life. Congrats to the chef.
A. C.
Can’t rate the Clarence and the team here highly enough. We are regulars of the shop for delicious bread, natural wine and more. Food is exceptional: we’ve been here for dinner, lunch, had takeaway (warm at home food) and hosted a party for 25 people. The party was a hit and our guests were very complimentary of the food and wine.
The chef, Harry, even coached me personally on how to reverse sear the Swaledale beef rib he supplied me with as an emergency Christmas meal after Boris cancelled our Christmas away. Hands down the best beef I’ve ever cooked.
J. R.
Loved everything about this place! Delicious food, great service, lovely ambiance. A great place for date night!
J. W.
Fantastic atmosphere in this pub. That was what struck me most. Not been in a pub like this for years .The staff were excellent. When I went the place was packed. The food was really good. Hope to go again but it's a long way from Cornwall.
S. M.
Good food although slightly over priced.
Good ambiance.
Used to get delveries during pandemic .
The only negative is the wine.
Apparently the whole list is composed of organic wines. Unfortunately they tend to be fizzy and smelling bad (rotten egg).
I bought a few in there shop and now I bought one in the restaurant !
It would be nice if they could acknowledge it instead of trying to explain that it is normal as part of the experience of drinking an organic wine.
At 55£ the bottle I expected to have some red wine with my meat … ordered a pinte in the end🙀.
If you do not intend to drink red wine . You can go. Or if you are happy to try Orange wine … a big thing at the Clarence . Call me traditionalist but I do not like sulfure smell and fizz when I get a bottle of red.
Idea: maybe a small second list of non organic more reliable bottles of red?
Also and to finish, although they kept on saying that they could replace the bottle… they indeed did not and we paid it. And have not finished it. Although 4 adults!!
R. B.
Such a lovely place, excellent and inexpensive food, lovely staff. Very busy at Sunday brunch time; can usually get a table any other time.
T. W.
Delicious food, good understanding of gluten free requirements. Will go again.
B. S.
Great atmosphere, very friendly and helpful staff, a proper wine menu which is always great to see. The food was good- very contemporary British cuisine however some of the dishes were a bit over salted
E. L.
An absolute gem! The food incredibly delicious. On top of that, beautifully presented and portion sizes are great. The team super professional and knowledgable. The girl with the blonde hair absolutely shocked me how quick and how much she can carry, never seen that show of strenght anywhere else. Efficieny and level of service from the team no competition anywhere else. The selection of drinks outstanding as well. All in all 5/5 from food to drink and service.
S. K.
Great for a special Sunday lunch. Bit wet and drippy on a rainy day even when covered in the garden. Great range of wines, affordable ones too. Excellent food and a great range in the deli bit at the front. Good service, got extra bread. Will definitely return.
E. D.
Great food and good options for vegetarians. The cannelloni, steak and bean dishes were lovely.
P. B.
Had a delicious weekday lunch here June 21. A nice long menu of primarily small vegetarian sharing plates, with a few fish dishes and even fewer meaty dishes. All very fresh and seasonal. We set outside in the back terrace, which was lovely on a hot afternoon.
The food was great, the service very friendly (we had a very small baby with us, which was no problem) and the space itself is lovely to be in.
Highly recommend.
T. G.
Nice, relaxed atmosphere and a great drink selection. First time trying orange wine 🍊🍷
Staff were friendly but it took a while to get served and even longer to pay, even though the place wasn’t busy.
G. P.
Go go go! That’s all you need to know! The food is OUTSTANDING!! Drapers Arms used to be our go to but now we don’t hesitate to get to the Clarence. Staff are so friendly and quickly treat you like part of the family. Food is always amazing. Menu changes daily but ALWAYS order the steak and get extra chips. OMG the crunchy chips are the bomb!! Wine list is natural and the staff are always on hand to help with your choices (ask for Rob, Joe or Sam for vino). They also have an amazing private dining room upstairs overlooking church street. Get there ASAP ✊🏻
B. H.
Amazing food and great service. My wife and I had an early meal before going to the theatre. The service was quick, but not rushed, and the waiter was very helpful. We ordered 4 starter sharing plates which were out of this world and the mains and dessert were some of the best we've tasted. I would highly recommend and will definitely be going back.
G. P.
I visited today, mainly to fulfil a task and was really impressed with the innovation and creativity. A deli and barista in the front area of the pub and a lovely dining area behind. If you are local I strongly recommend a visit.
A. M.
Finally Stoke Newington has an instant classic. A new second home. Unpretentious but ambitious, personal and welcoming.
N. C.
Absolutely delicious.
From the door to the table, from the appetisers to the dessert, absolutely stunning. Top service and amazing food. I really enjoyed my experience: we had quite a lot of starters and mains and managed to get through to the dessert, which was absolutely delicious. Everything was spot on, on top of that a quick and prepared staff that helped us pairing a really great wine with our meal and make us feel super comfortable. Definitely recommend and will be back
G. F.
The food was very tasty! You could feel the quality and freshness of the products. We took the lamb, the meat was really tender with a melting texture and the roasted potatoes were a dream. We will definitely come back! lovely atmosphere around and the staff was really nice. Interesting wine list as well

First time out to eat since covid began.
What a great atmosphere, the food smelled great the atmosphere was buzzing. Great food tasty well presented good portions. Great service the waiters all seemed very happy. Its was a very enjoyable evening. I would absolutely eat there again.
L. R.
Faultless lunch from start to finish. Excellent wine list and delicious food menu in beautiful setting. Best pub in N16.
P. F.
The Clarence provided catering for our wedding recently. They were so so friendly, helpful and thorough in the planning that I knew we were dealing with a real class act. The food was absolutely mind-blowing! Wonderful, delicious pies catering perfectly for everyone's dietary requirements, Gratin Dauphinois was one of the best I've ever had and certainly the best that I've had outside of France. They made some absolutely wonderful focaccia sandwiches for when people arrived that went down an absolute storm (you can often get these from their excllent deli section and they are to die for btw!). The staff & servers were absolutely fantastic, super friendly, attentive and seamless. This is a real 'I'd give it 10 stars' if I could and might have to write a separate review for the restaurant & deli which are also wonderful!
A. R.
Food always excellent and the seating outside is lovely.
T. H.
Children's meal was tasty. Just a shame the pretentious, prohibitive sharing menu made the best things on the menu out of reach for this single diner
c. m.
I fall in love with the burrata & pickled chard dish!! Please give me more!! Great service(perhaps missing a bit of cheerful-liness) but Sam was great. Excellent wine selection. Beer's selection needs a bit more of thought. New furniture very contemporary and fresh flowers on the tables is a plus. Thanks for today's experience Clarence's team
O. L.
Fantastic outdoor and roomy space, attentive wait staff and most important - the FOOD. I had the onglet and my husband had the duck, and both were truly delicious. We could not resist the allure of a £10 potato dauphinoise, and I'm so glad we went for it. High-end, fabulous food in an unpretentious setting. Will for sure be back.
K. B.
They have a nice wine menu and the food is lovely If not a tad expensive, PLEASE get some proper glasses for cocktails :)
M.
Highly recommended. Since they opened on March 17 The Clarence have provided us with excellent takeaways during lockdowns and isolation, lunches and dinners when allowed, and even managed to fit in our wedding reception. Excellent, often imaginative food and interesting wine list. The food is very good value, the wine perhaps a tad expensive but all good stuff. Staff are excellent, friendly and helpful.
H. S. Q.
We had a great lunch here. All courses were very good indeed - homemade pasta was spot on! The wine list is excellent with lots available by the glass and the cocktails are great too. The lunchtime set menu makes it very good value and the team there are friendly and attentive.
D. S.
Went a couple of times between lockdowns and food was excellent. Staff very friendly and good wine recommendation. I heard they were open as a deli and for cook at home food so went over the weekend and bought an ox cheek pie that was so good. Nice selection of wine, beer and other treats too. Looking forward to going back for a sit down meal once this ends(!) but in the meantime this was a pretty good substitute.
F. H.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Definitely try this place out. The new management really know what they are doing. Good value, delicious food. Our whole tables starters, mains and puddings were all 10/10 delicious. The wine list is well curated and full of bangers. Knowledgable and friendly staff and great buzzing atmosphere. Definitely recommend!

A gem of a local pub. Delicious food! Worth a special journey. Excellent wine list and seriously good cocktails (amazing value too).
Love popping in here for a pint and a snack, as well as booking in for their incredible Sunday lunch.
They also have a great little shop selling Monmouth coffee, bread, pastries, store cupboard goodies, wine, beers & pre-mixed cocktails that is well worth a visit if you're passing by.
M. T.
We got married here at the end of October amidst the pandemic. Despite the circumstances they made the whole process easy and exciting. On the day, the staff were respectful, kind and understanding. Everybody commented on the amazing food and service, with most saying it was the best food they have ever had at a wedding! Thank you for making our special day all the more special, we couldn't have done it without you!
M. N.
I love The Clarence. Fantastic food and wine, great beer selection and comfortable surroundings. The menu is full of delicious, seasonal dishes, it’s always difficult to choose. Service is attentive but perfectly relaxed. This place is great whether you’re just dropping in for a pint or settling in for an amazing meal.
m. g.
MY FAVOURITE LOCAL!!! the food is sensational, service extremely friendly and incredible wine list natural but very accessible.
As a passionate French woman I’m
Very fussy on my chips, but theirs are « L excellence «
Always get an Americano cocktail to start, a fernet branca to finish come home with and big smile on your face!!
Book it tout de suite xxx

I've been the Clarence Tavern several times and it never disappoints. The covered garden provides the perfect atmosphere for a weekday lunch with friends or Friday night dinner. The wine selection is incredible and I recently discovered a new favourite wine, which is also available to purchase from the store at the front of the pub. The potato pithivier is one of the most delicious things I've tasted and I plan on ordering it next week as part of the pub's takeaway offer. The Clarence Tavern has easily become my favourite local restaurant.
E. F.
We love it here. The food is unpretentious and delicious, the staff are super friendly, there is a great atmosphere both in the dining room and out the back in the garden and it is perfect for any occasion - in the last few weeks we've enjoyed a date night dinner, Sunday lunch with friends and their toddler and baby and a few drinks and snacks on a weekend afternoon. It is a wonderful addition to Church Street (and the shop is great too)!
M. R.
What a lovely place... :-)
My daughter Olivia and I popped in for a bite to eat and refreshment in comfortable surroundings!
Our meal was excellent and the friendly staff with their efficient service and attention to detail really made it a great experience for both of us.
We look forward to returning soon to sample another one of their fine wines and Olivia wants to go back to see Sam ‘he was a nice guy Dad’
Keep up the great work & hope to see you soon,
Mark & Olivia x

Where to begin with The Clarence Tavern? We recently celebrated our wedding reception in the private dining room at the pub having decided to get married at pretty short notice following the cancellation of our original date due to COVID-19. From start to finish, Sam and his team could not have done more to make the day as special as it was. They were so easy to deal with in the lead up to the event and bent over backwards to accommodate our every need. On the day itself, the room looked absolutely amazing and the service was both friendly and discreet - flawless, in fact! Most importantly, the food and drink was exceptional and our guests have not stopped saying how impressed they were by the whole experience. Even in normal times, we wouldn't have changed a thing. Huge thanks to Sam, the guys on the floor and everyone in the kitchen for an unforgettable day.
P. G.
What can I say. With recent change of ownership bringing Anchor and Hope pedigree, the expectation was always high. Thankfully the Clarence Tavern delivered on all levels. I’ve been back three times already (lunch and dinner) and navigated different avenues of the thoughtful, enticing and “true-to-roots” menus. A true gastropub experience. Sam (manager) knows his wine and we were happy to take his lead on selection - personable and passionate!!!
H. F.
Lovely place, very accommodating and friendly staff! We popped in at 3pm on a Friday and got a table in the beer garden until reservations started at 5pm. They have really figured out how to serve customers with social distancing, and the place is spotless. It would have been perfect if it wasn't for the three chain smokers in the middle of the beer garden - my friend started coughing because of the smoke, so we decided to leave earlier than planned...
H. G.
Popped in here on Sunday for an impromptu drink, the hostess was super accommodating and friendly. The wine is randomly served as a small or 375ml, or bottle, but that was fine for us as we only wanted a quick one, the wine was very tasty and the staff were great. The only thing was the chairs were tiny stools which might get a bit uncomfy if you were there for a long sesh, not all the tables were like that though, I'm sure if you booked you'd get a normal chair. It's very dog friendly so if you're like us and being surrounded by dogs is a huge plus, you're in luck!
B. B.
Good food and cute space. A tad pricey.
M. K.
Lovely tasty food. A bit of hit & miss service though. Go for food! :)
M. L.
Finally managed to get over here on Saturday for dinner and it was brilliant! I'm a long term fan of the Anchor & Hope so the Clarence had a lot to live up but I'm very pleased to say the team didn't miss a beat!
Informed and friendly staff, great seasonal menu and comfortable, unpretentious experience.
Particular mention MUST be made for the pickled walnut ketchup which is ridiculously addictive.
These guys are doing great things in a very challenging time for restaurants. Go and support them, they deserve it and the experience is definitely worth your while!
L. E.
I've been to the clarence 3 times since they opened and the food has been delicious every visit! Plenty of veggie options available and the set lunch is great value. Service is welcoming and it's such a treat having them here in Stoke Newington!
L. V.
Dined recently at the Clarence Tavern with my son……..amazing friendly staff with a great atmosphere! Food is magnificent and tasty, especially the wild rabbit and chicken tarragon pie. Everything from starter to dessert was outstanding and delicious, truly complimented by the natural wine menu, very impressive! Also taking Covid-19 very seriously which mean that you feel safe and in good hands. A very good customer experience……can’t wait to visit again!
B. V.
I've eaten at the Clarence several times now since they opened earlier in the year, and the food has always been brilliant. Really excellent quality produce, and simple dishes that go above and beyond expectation. The menu changes regularly so you can be sure you're always getting the best of what's in season. There's a fantastic wine list, full of natural wines for all budgets, and the staff really know about each and every bottle down to the smallest detail of how the wine is produced. The atmosphere is really relaxed and cosy despite covid restrictions, and on a sunny day the garden is a great place for a cheeky cocktail or two. During lockdown The Clarence opened as a shop, where they really showcased their amazing suppliers and ingredients. You can tell this is a restaurant that values very high quality ingredients. Even a simple bag of crisps will be the best crisps you've ever had
S. M.
Lamb to share was delicious. Peach crumble had very little crumble. Service was average, staff seemed rushed off their feet. Slightly disappointing.
O. A.
Thank you guys for an amazing meal with the family! Staff were incredible and had such great knowledge of the whole menu. Food was fresh and seasonal, paired with a great bottle of wine suggested by our waitress. Will be back soon!
t.
Always fantastic, The Clarence is a firm favourite on our list. Friendly service, great atmosphere and a consistently exciting menu all keep us coming back again and again. Can’t recommend it enough!
S. D.
The Clarence Tavern went through a refurb at the beginning of the year and is now a proper gastro pub under the steady hands of Sam (front of house) and Harry (head chef). The decor is cool and relaxed; the service friendly and the wine list interesting - do talk to Sam (he is passionate about wine!). The food is a couple of steps up on your average gastro pub and the menu changes daily reflecting what’s fresh from suppliers in Yorkshire and the coastal ports in Kent and Cornwall. Pies take centre stage as are sharing dishes of slow cooked lamb shoulder. We have now been several times and I can’t think of anywhere better for a pint and a meal.
A.
We had a brilliant night at the Clarence last year - managed to get a reservation on the terrace and really enjoyed the wonderful menu and excellent service. You can see why it’s so popular - difficult to get a reservation here, but worth persisting / waiting for!
W. C.
One of the best dining experiences I've had in London. Fantastic food, friendly and knowledgeable staff - topped with a great selection of wine and beer!
A. D.
Warm and welcoming pub, with good food. We all had the steak pie, which was great. Less than £20 each including soft drinks and tip. Decent service. A sympathetically renovated modern pub interior. They also had an attractive looking garden and a downstairs bar for private hire too.
R. L.
Lovely pub in Stoke Newington with excellent food, drink and service. Very creative dishes. Had a few lovely evenings here pre-lockdown and can’t wait to go back once things are back to normal. Great takeaway option during lockdown! Highly recommend.
E. S.
The Clarence Tavern has everything you could want from a gastro pub - bold menu, considered wine list, excellent service and a casual, cosy atmosphere. The set lunch in town is brilliant value for money too. Will be back ASAP!
G. J. V.
Don't even know where to start, this is pretty much my idea of a perfect establishment!
One of the best wine lists I've ever seen, almost all natural wines with plenty to choose by the glass, and most importantly, completely reasonably priced! I could spend months exploring the depths of it.
Then there's the food....aaaaaaaaaahhhhhh the FOOD! Nothing try hard about this; just good, honest, wholehearted and bloody delicious. The menu is seasonal and ever changing, I've been in several times since lockdown, and there are always new dishes on the menu. Everything I've ever ate here has been truly out of this world; when you order a dish that simply says "Deep fried beans and pickled walnut ketchup" and it blows your socks off so hard that you don't know what hit you...you know you've found somewhere special! Plus...hands down...the best steak and chips I've ever had!
But most important of all, the service is incredible. Everyone is not only so obviously pumped and proud to work there, but they are all so knowledgable and lovely, it's really refreshing to see. They remember a face and are always warm and welcoming: it feels a bit like Cheers at times really.
They even run a shop from the front selling Neal's Yard Cheese, Monmouth Coffee, Brindisa products, the most ridiculous meat, all their wine at off-sale prices and heaps loads of amazing staples for the kitchen. It's come in as a life saver on many an occasion.
I wish I was local to Stoke Newington, which has probably gone up in the UN's World Happiness Report with the arrival of this place! Anyone who lives there is lucky to have this as their local...I'm jealous... might just move into the cellar if they'll let me.
A. G.
Lovely gastro pub in pretty Stoke Newington. Very nice atmosphere inside and a cosy outside space. Food was hearty and delicious - the burrata & Nebbiolo grapes is a must have. Great wine selection too. Super friendly staff. Lovely evening all in all.
M. S.
Was our first dinner after the third lockdown. We were lucky they took us w/o reservation. Crab toast with squid ink was great. Friendly service.
H.
Favourite place in the area for a Sunday roast, a glass of wine or a mid week dinner. The food is excellent, the service is wonderful - the staff really want to make sure you have a great time - and the shop at the front is great too. One of my fave places in the area.
I. R.
Had a fantastic lunch of fish and chips here. The fish was beautifully cooked and the batter was possibly the best I have ever had. Chips excellent. Served with peas. A very good point (as far as I'm concerned) is that you don't have to put up with those tiny sachets of Heinz ketchup. Instead you get Stokes condiments in decent sized sachets that give you loads of ketchup and don't have you covered in sauce while you try to squeeze out a thimble-full onto your plate. I would definitely recommend this pub for lunch. Aside from the food the service was fast, friendly, the decor lovely and the toilets extremely well-kept.
M. K.
Went last week and thought the food was excellent. Really friendly staff, great menu. Solid place that I never knew was nearby. Will definitely be coming back. Far better than standard pub fare.
M. N.
Delicious lunch at a reasonable price - would recommend highly

Enjoyed an evening meal at The Clarence in the heated, covered outdoor space in early November. Excellent service, delicious artichokes, tartiflette and bavette. The Tscheppe wine was a treat. Will definitely return when back in London.
D. L.
One of our favourite food places in Stokey. Great dishes wonderfully cooked. Lovely staff too.
J. J. B.
One of my favourite places to eat in Stoke Newington. Great food and drinks. Spacious interior. I have only been on week nights, and it’s never too busy which makes it perfect for chilled catch ups with friends over nice food and drinks.
W. T.
BRILLIANT! went for dinner last evening, 5 of us. Great food all round, decent wine list and friendly attentive staff. Its a very welcome addition to Church Street under new management i'm sure it will do very well.

Stumbled upon this place and I'm glad I did! The food is delicious and you could wile away a few hours over their extensive wine list which the friendly staff are very knowledgeable about. I think I'll be back!
J. G.
I had a great meal here yesterday but I have recently been ordering online by using their fantastic web order service so I knew they made good food. My meal yesterday made my day. They have a nice selection of beer you can order from.
G. Q.
This pub is really nice and really welcoming. Good atmosphere. Not as cosmopolitan as Stoke Newington, but still a cool place.
It's a shame that on Google opening times it tells you that it's open till 2am when it actually close at midnight. So please get your opening hours sorted.
The food is a bit pricy for what you get but is up to you how to value what your eat! ;)
Will be back!

Really good food at pretty reasonable London prices. A treat certainly, but not extortionate at all, especially for the quality. Think it's the same folks that run the Anchor & Hope on The Cut, and it's a similar vibe
R. F.
Brilliant restaurant, lovely outdoor space, excellent food as to be expected given the connection to Anchor and Hope etc. Really nice service and a great addition to the area. Also the wine list is very good.
j. m.
One word fantastic, the menu was great, seasonal and wonderful choice, awesome wines, brilliant staff and setting.
Such a cosy and safe environment! Highly recommend.
C. W.
Delicious! So happy to see the anchor and hope/Magdalen arms/previously great queen street management have opened a new restaurant. Great service and beautiful food.
S.
Wow, we love the Clarence. This lockdown we've been so fortunate to live near them, where they are selling excellently-sourced deli items, takeaway foods and meals to heat at home. Highly recommend the potato dauphinois (life-changing), ox cheek pie, saucissons, wines, and basically everything else they stock. Certainly a restaurant that is going to take off once lockdown ends.

Visited whilest in Stoke Newington, took my wife and daughter for sunday lunch - absolutely fantastic.
Between us we ordered the lamb roast, beef roast and also several tapas - the scotch egg was one of the best I've had.
Service was attentive and friendly, food portions very big (filled me up and thats normally hard to do!) - the Roast Beef was lovely and tender and the selection of vegetables really nice - honey glazed carrots especially.
Being so full we actually shared a desert - had sticky toffee pudding, very good.
The selection of beers and wines was really good - however meal was rounded off perfectly with an espresso martini for wife and daughter - tole it was the best they've had.
highly recommend - get there early!
N. A.
Came on Good Friday and the service was warm and friendly, beers nice, and the food was fantastic!!! Dog friendly too which is always a bonus. Was a bit worried to shout about it too much in case it became so busy we wouldn't get a table next time! Lovely!
C. E.
What a gem! Really can’t recommend highly enough, amazing food and staff. Attention to detail and love for local/ quality is at the heart of this place. Already made our next reservation to come back!
S. P.
Had an amazing dinner here of beef rib and dauphinois. Service was great, friendly and very knowledgeable. Not the cosiest of interiors but emphasis is firmly on the food, pricey but oh so worth it!
E. S.
Had a great meal out in the garden area - it's covered so you're shielded from the elements. Food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. Would very much recommend.
A. W.
Had a works Christmas meal there in the upstairs function room. I've eaten some rubbish in my time at Christmas does - this meal bucked the trend with a cracking good 2 course meal for £22.95, really good food and a nice choice to preorder. Service was great, couldn't fault it. Had a lovely time.
I. G.
Bit disappointing - nice looking venue and pub garden but roast chicken Sunday dinner served up cold, when we complained guy just said plate's hot....yes but food wasn't and then 10 minutes later we had to chase them for it again, bit shoddy. Also busy but not heaving so why not clean the dirty tables . OK not the most expensive pub in Stokie for Sunday roast but need to do a little bit better - doesn't mean I won't eat here again but just average
C. G.
So good. Who would have thought that bread and butter could have so much flavour.
A really great step on from Great Queen Street in every way, the staff are always excellent and the food stunningly humble and delicious.
P. L.
Fantastic bar with some great unusual beers. All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Always feel very welcomed here. There is a great beer garden and even a lovely roof top terrace too.
K. S.
Note that many older reviews are from before the refurbishment. Has been completely overhauled.
Had a nice Sunday roast here. The chicken and vegetarian options were good, and the sides were excellent. Large and clean. Child and dog friendly.
m. g.
Brilliant place, relaxed, friendly environment. Lovely garden with outdoor heating and cute lights. The food is excellent, quirky menu full of surprises! The staff are beyond hospitable, ultra friendly and good at what they do! I love coming here !
B. M.
Best meal in North London! Unbelievable food, stunning wine list and exceptional knowledge of produce from friendly staff - highly recommend for any occasion!
C. E.
We enjoyed a fabulous evening here with excellent food, delicious wine suggested by our super helpful waitress and great ambience. Amazing! We will be back!
m. l.
Great location with secluded Al fresco dining. Enjoyed the service and food, but can't help feeling that it lacked a little something called special. Enjoyable but not special.
G. D.
Great spot for lunch or dinner and if you're a wine person (like me) you'll appreciate what's on offer (loved the natural wines!!). A really welcome addition to the area.
G. A.
Came here after we disappointedly poked our heads around the door at the Red Lion. This place is buzzing. Various settees and objet d'art make this pub very homely indeed. Seems like the local parents group (upstairs) and dog owners (garden) clubs agree - can only be good for business. The punters are lively, chatty and happy which is an exact match for the bar team who were great and extremely helpful. The wasp I dispatched in a napkin was removed with a wry smile - say no more. There are only a couple of cask ales :( but at least they were there. Other beers are craft and the usual lagers. Not meant as a pub comparison by any means, but my children wanted something different to fruit juice/water/fizzy drink so I asked for a Virgin Mary. It was the best VM I've seen or tasted. It had all the trimmings including a stick of celery and spices in and around the rim of the glass. Brilliant. Something you don't often see is English tapas on the menu, but here this is what dominates the menu. Other than that, there are half a dozen mains and the same of desserts. We opted for half a rack of ribs and chicken burger from the mains menu. Neither could be faulted, the ribs were particularly succulent. Chips were nice, large (not French) and crispy. Looking for an excuse to come back here and trying the many tapas dishes. Best pub around Stoke Newington bar none.
R.
Such a lovely pub with great choice of beer and a delicious Bloody Mary. Staff very friendly and helpful, and generally the pub was really accommodating in providing the space for a small party for my friend. Everyone really enjoyed it, thank you!
L. G.
pivoted their business to sell delicious food during the pandemic. sourdough, dairy selection and jams are all great (and reassuringly expensive)
R. M.
We like this place. Great cowskin chairs, service exceptional, good gluten free options. A worthy venue for a 9th birthday roast.
T. E.
Fabulous food, fabulous wine. Sam and the team have done a great job. A must visit. Can’t wait to go back!
J. N.
Sunday roast is amazing. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. This is the second time we have been here and both times, we had a really good experience. Definitely coming back here.
O. L.
Takeaway lunch was relatively tasty but extremely poor value. The sandwich was over in literally 3 bites, maybe sufficient for a small child’s lunch
C. A.
Great food. Great service despite it being busy. Reasonable prices
C. D.
Great food and excellent selection of drinks. Very dog-friendly. All the staff are lovely
C. G.
My boyfriend and I go here regularly not only because of the fantastic, heart warming food but it's great location and chilled atmosphere.
A. C.
Understaffed and this "tea house" is more of a pub. They do have a great selection of teas but it may take a while to be served. The food was ok but nothing to write home about.
S. P.
Good service;good food.
G. K.
Excellent local pub in Stoke Newington, very quiet on visiting 30th December but looks like a great pub with food and an interesting take on spicing your Bloody Mary from the custom choice of flavours including lemon salt!
G. S.
Stoke Newington is a place, like a lot of London, recently gentrified. Now, we are led to believe that areas like Peckham, Deptford, Stoke Newington are hotbeds of amazing vibrations and creativity, without proving it in output. Consequently a breakfast is an arm and a leg. Just as soon as a place gets popular, this is what happens. There is no-where but the Turkish run greasy spoon for a traditional platter of British grub. More than this, The Daniel Defoe offers sensibly priced tea & coffee to have with free Wi-Fi. Choose The Daniel Defoe as daytime haunt. You won't be bugged and the music accompanies not only the snacks but a focused web search: the taste of the current manager is impeccable and pitch perfect. Rare in London.
J. B.
Excellent gluten free fish and chips and GF steak and mushroom pie! Also lovely GF deserts. I'm certainly going back again.
V. O.
Great food. Relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. Thoroughly enjoyable lunch on the terrace.
N. H.
Airy pub with a warm wooden glow inside. Light streams in from both sides creating an ambience. The Sunday roasts come with free top ups of veggies.
Р. Д.
Great staff, great food, one of the best natural wine list I’ve seen in London!
M. B.
Very nice food. They weren't doing the advertised bottomless glass, which is the main reason we went but it was nice nonetheless
S. B.
I highly recommend the spicy venison pie in their shop, combined with the potato dauphinoise it made for a magnificent meal.
K. L.
Banging food and good service. Highly recommend

L. S.
Gastropub with delicious food and stylish interior. I visited during the week-it was nice that it wasn't too noisy and I could hear my conversation!
s. m.

(Translated) The PUB has an impeccable service, the beer comes very cold and with the correct collar, the starters should be more reinforced but do not harm.
A good place to relax without spending a lot.

O PUB tem um atendimento impecável, a cerveja vem bem gelada e com o colarinho correto, os starters deveriam ser mais reforçados mas não prejudicam.
Um bom lugar para relaxar sem gastar muito.
