Reviews of The Commercial
S. E.
Brilliant team, especially the pink haired girl called Linda I think. I have a physical disability and learning difficulties and this girl made me feel special and welcome, this being at a busy time with the rugby. My partner is also disabled and now also wants to visit because the service and reception is so good. A joyous visit with super staff, that Linda is a credit to her peers and managers. Well done...we shall return
A. R.
Despite being fully booked, the staff found a table for us (3 adults and 2 children). The food was really nice, we got the Sunday roasts and fish and chips - they were delicious and came in large portions. We’ll definitely be back and book a table at the back, where the it’s a bit brighter!
N. A.
Nice pub with TV's for sport. The manager was friendly and put the F1 on for us in one of the rooms. The food is burgers and fried chicken along with some regular pub meals. The food was actually very nice. The service was a little complicated as I couldn't use the app they have and the the bar staff struggled a bit with order. Otherwise a good experience.
M. M.
Nice pub but some of the bar staff sauntered past tables full of empty glasses without picking any up. Good choice of wine.
A. C.
Absolute class pub , staff are well nice, went to a quiz on a Monday and the quiz master was a lovely man ( didn't win) but was pretty dank anyway ,
J. T.
Good beers, good atmosphere, excellent range of food for non-meat eaters. Suffers from the regular Herne Hill "Attack of the Prams" on a Sunday though - loses it a star I'm afraid, same for the other Herne Hill pubs.
D. J.
Been going in here for a while and I think its a beacon of hope and normality in the overpriced area it inhabits. The staff are always lovely and helpful, they do a great coffee that is affordable and puts a lit of the locals poncey places to shame!! The building is beautiful and old with original wooden panel walls and ceiling ... They also have a good selection of beers and good food!! I really dont know why anyone would leave a bad review I say its more likely a "them problem" not an issue with the pub. What do they expect a red carpet and free Chardonnay?? Its a bloody lundun pub m8. A lovely one at that and more like the old days when a place had a bit of personality and u didn't need a bank loan to cover your bill. Will be a fan for life! Its right opposite the station, great location!! Great building! Nice staff!!
N. S.
Great food! Great outside space and the staff is very nice.
All types of people go there so there's a place for everyone.
Book a table as it's usually busy
H. N.
Very attentive staff went out of their way to allow us to watch the sport we wanted to on their projector
Decent food and well priced drinks
L.
Love this pub, super cosy and great bar staff!! Would recommend
L. G.
Had food and drinks here. Attentive and friendly service from Abbie. Would definitely go again.
I. H.
Great pub and amazing service from evie, she went above the glizzy too make me feel comfortable and she was very accommodating in her approach too serving me.
W. D.
Lovely staff. Great piano night, will be back to see the nice staff behind the bar (and for the whiskey)
I. C.
Such a nice pub, great food and great service from liv too! Will definitely be returning.
A. K.
Popped in for lunch and had one of the best burgers I have ever had! The menu is varied and the staff were excellent. Will deffo be back!
n. h.
Such a lovely relaxed local. Really great, friendly service from Eva too. A great way to spend a few hours on the weekend.
I. B.
Popped in for a pint and grabbed some 241 wings on my way home Wednesday night, really tasty and good value ££
It's a proper pub with friendly staff and good food, will deffo be back!
S. M.
Great Pub, great atmosphere and great service from the bar staff. Shout out to Oscar.
J. B.
Lovely staff, especially Evie Oscar and Elsie - becky is the best!
A. S.
I had a lovely evening here. A girl with blonde hair served us and was super friendly!
s. z.
Great trendy local pub. Nice atmosphere and excellent selection of drinks. Friendly staff and good music.
O. M.
Great pub, lovely bar staff!
D. G.
Went for a drink after a walk in the park. Nice atmosphere, and good drinks!
S. Y.
Excellent spot for mid-week lunch. Great menu and very well prepared.
A. 1.
Great pub, defo would go again!
F. P.
Manages to be both cosy and spacious, with good sports coverage
D. W.
Went for lunch meeting with a colleague. The service was good although one girl was unfortunately a bit poorly. Burgers were nice and tasty although would be better if included chips. The atmosphere was quiet. All in all a nice traditional pub.
W. H.
Love this pub, great vibe and staff
d. c.
Great bar staff, service and food love it 😀
P. J.
Good traditional pub with excellent food.
B. N.
Fairly standard pub Sunday food. Not really good or anything, meat that was fine, was fine. When I order lamb, I always hope for a little pinkness, and meat that has clearly been seared. Or alternatively the beautiful tenderness of a properly cooked shank. What I got here, as often seems the way in British pubs, was meat that wouldn't be bad in a curry or stew, but wasn't quite good enough to stand alone as a main. They do try hard with the beer choices, and the atmosphere was pleasant enough, but this isn't the sort of place where they have a passion for the food they serve.
S. J.
Nice beer selection and friendly staff. Baked Camembert to start was nicely presented in a bread bowl and was cooked well - there were four of us and this was a good start. Each of us had a Sunday roast and they weren’t that great; 2 x beef, 1 x chicken & 1 lamb. Over cooked meats and undercooked Yorkshire puddings. The food on the regular menu looked much nicer.
p.
Decent pub with good beers on tap
O. L.
Decent local with good beers and food, friendly staff and a bit of space out back and front.
E. d. P.
Popped in for a quick lunch with a friend while in the area. Ordering food was not a great experience as I had to wait about 45 minutes for my food and my friends order was forgot completely which they were refunded for.
The pub does have a garden area and good atmosphere and seems to be popular with the locals.
N. L.
Cosy bar, serving English food.
Attentive staff. It's not that big but comfy enough to enjoy a beer / wine with friends.
Handy location opposite the station. They have a small beer garden at the back (not impressed) but also 4 tables at the front, allowed smoke and quite entertaining watching the ever changing Herne Hill as improvements have made it more pedestrian friendly.
Toilet clean.
R. O.
We went for family drinks in the afternoon and it was busy enough to be interesting. We got a table in the quieter emptier part of the pub so Grandparents were able to hear. We played a couple of games provided and had a lovely time.
J. E.
Good pub in a good location. Always friendly staff and a good range of drinks The menu is good and a varied menu. A good place for a quick pint or a nice lunch.
The only recent complaint is that the Sunday lunch was not a decent portion. The roast beef was £13 and left me feeling hungry afterwards.
a. g.
I came a week ago with my girlfriend at The Commercial and I have to admit this pub was a great experience for both of us. We had a full meal, tasted delicious and topped it up with a nice bottle of red wine. We both loved the range of beers, exceptional for the location, you don't have to go far to get a nice Pale Ale on tap, it's just across Herne Hill station. Last comment, the staff, bar or either floor were really friendly and made us feel home. We'll be back soon. Cheers
S. L.
Lovely time on a warm sunny bank holiday Sunday evening. Good food and a lovely little outside seating area to enjoy. The evening we were there a piano recital was going on outside Herne hill station. This just added to the whole laid back vibe of the evening. Fantastic music on a lovely warm sunny sunday. What more would you want?
J. G.
Working in the area and found this place on a bit of a wander. It really is a decent pub. It has a chilled vibe, good tunes that are just loud enough, they don't stop conversations. Lots of beers on and the food is excellent. A gem of a find.
A. B.
This pub has a fantastic atmosphere, and I would highly recommend it as a place to chill out for a drink on a Sunday afternoon, or to go out on a Friday or Saturday. Great selection of drinks. Friendly service. However, I would not recommend the food.
J. T.
Friendly little pub outside the station. Great choice of beer and food including vegetarian choices. They had run out of some food by the time we arrived later in the evening so maybe pop along earlier than 8pm!
A. D.
Came here for the Monday quiz night and found it really enjoyable. The quiz costs £2 per person with prizes for the winning teams and the questions were from varying topics. There is quite a decent selection of drinks and the food we ordered was well priced, big portion sizes and came out relatively quickly.
R. N.
End up here totally by chance pleased we did. This place is the full package good vibes, friendly staff, great music and the roast was amazing and well priced. Will be back a hidden Jem if you want a good roast for a good price portions sizes good. Thank you
E. B.
Love this bar - always a lovely crowd. Highly recommend the Katsu Burger. Also consistently top-notch service from the handsome Irish barman! ;)
H. P.
Updated. Thanks for the comment but the last times I've been, today being a good example, the experience has been less good. Bar staff not serving at a busy bar and preferring to chat for several minutes over the bar and serving red wine that has clearly been left too long in the bottle. Happy to pay and change wines but the same person there's no interest. May go to the half moon instead
A. P.
Really like the new fit-out at The Commercial. The menu has far more options than previously which had become dated. The food is infinitely better, now with ales and beers that are in rotation offering new options. Still think they can put more tables outside.
M. K.
I love the decoration and the warmth of this pub. It also was not too loud thankfully. The food portions need to be a bit bigger though.
i. p.
Good food.
Convenient.
Great vfm.
Beers well kept.
Staff friendly and authentic.
Music can be loud.
Nice real fires.
Pub is good in summer and winter.
G. S.
Nice pub, good beers, friendly staff, relaxed and chilled atmosphere (the fish and chips coming out the kitchen looked delicious). As soon as I am back in the area I shall visit again, definitely (and try the fish and chips)!
W. W.
I like this pub in general and it is very popular. On Saturday, we were told it was table service only and waited 10 minutes without any service before deciding to leave.
r. c.
Good food good atmosphere too good beer and drink
S. S.
Pleasant pub just opposite the train station, although food was a touch on the lackluster side. I was also very disappointed with the pokey back yard, especially as there are larger car parks on either side... even a tiny expansion would really transform this place, though I appreciate that requires investment which may be beyond the owners. Basically neither a bad nor great pub, just ok.
E. S.
I had the chicken pie.. It was amazing. I love it when the food is on point. Staff were nice. Could be an intimate setting for a romantic meal in the evening. Nice place.
T. Z.
It was ok, service was a bit slow, but on a Sunday watching the game during covid19, pleasure to have the whole place to myself. Pint and good seating area to watch the game
D. h.
Good selection of beers, usually at least 4 or 5 ales. Food is ok, not amazing but good pub grub. The crowd is usually a good mix of people, friendly place.
L. W.
Delicious chicken burger, good service and COVID-19 rules strictly adhered to. Great selection of wine too!
B. B.
Quality pub. Nice atmosphere. Not too fancy, or too grubby. Very tasty food, although they had run out of a few options.
D. B.
Nice bar, brilliant lager and ale choice with some bottled cider. Service is friendly and the food menu is good with tapas and main courses on the menu.
S. K.
Lovely afternoon. Great food and nice atmosphere.
M. T.
Second visit after over ten years
Well organised
Good range of drinks
D. S.
Often pop in here when I'm in the area.
Nice place, well maintained. Food is fine.
Getting a bit on the pricey side these days though but otherwise a cracking pub.
R. A.
Decent food and tap selection. Smaller then the other pubs but makes use of the space well.
L. M.
A surprisingly traditional pub, with a selection of real ales, but also a choice of up to date menu options from roasts to quinoa salad. Lively and friendly, right in the cool heart of the Railton Road, Herne Hill shopping area. Just the place to relax after an active day in nearby Brockwell Park.
S. H.
Awesome pub, great staff and lovely clientele. Great selection of beer and food too. Highly recommend
L. D.
Our local in Herne Hill. Very cosy pub with a fire....when its busy there's no chance of getting a seat so need to get there early. Nice staff and good music most of the time :)
T. U.
Great pub right by herne Hill station. Good choice of craft beers and good food. Not much outdoor seating though.
J. M.
Pure gastropub, but that's not a bad thing. And they do lamb for Sunday lunches, which a lot of places don't do anymore.
It can get busy on a Sunday (it's right on Herne Hill Farmer's Market) and it's on the upper end of sunday lunch prices, but definitely worth a trip.
L. H.
Really nice pub. Great range of beers. Very popular. Great location opposite Herne Hill station.
O. f.
+ Staff are very friendly
+ Good selection of drinks
+ Good atmosphere
+ Fireplaces
- Food is awful. Go for a drink but don't eat there. I think they are missing a trick there.
- No kids menu or kids cutlery but they do have a high chair. Again, with all the young families in Herne Hill, they are missing a trick. It doesn't cost much to get some plastic Ikea kids cutlery and a few crayons and colouring pages.
- The stairs to women's toilets are scary. Very narrow and steep. You do not want to get drunk there as I guarantee a fall. On the plus side, nobody will see you as it's behind a dark closed. I'm sure they chose it on purpose to be women's loo. I feel it's probably because they think women won't get as drunk as men. Slightly sexist (joke by the way!).
- Limited outside space.
It's alright for a drink, but not for food.
S. C.
I like this pub. Good ale and nice food. Very relaxed and friendly. Definitely better than the average train station pub.
t. s.
Have been going to the commercial for Sunday lunch quite a few times and really enjoyed lovely food even coming home with a doggy bag !!
Sadly not today roast beef was really tough not the same different chef ? Different suppliers?
Need to up their game as the New moon has now opened

J. E.
Great food, excellent service and really enjoyed the place
O. W.
A fair few beers on offer. Nice place to sit outside & listen to people playing the piano in Herne Hill Station.
Friendly place to sit & watch the world go by.
K. C.
Decent local pub with reasonably good pub food. Very nice staff, always friendly.
M. D.
Very nice little gastro pub. I'm not a fan of the food here, but it is a nice indoor area with some good drinks.
N. B.
Lovely pub with good menu. Can recommend the nut roast with no reservations at all!
C. H.
Not the best for food but relaxed atmosphere and probably the closest to an actual local pub we have in Herne Hill. Not as pretentious as the other pubs in the area.
B. S.
Great Sunday roast in a buzzing environment. Make sure you book a table as its very popular. Allows dogs and room for prams.
M. L.
Solid pub, generally very welcoming staff, clean, well-maintained with great drinks selection.
J. L.
Nice staff and atmosphere but the portions are so small we had to ask for more. Wouldn't recommend the food.
S. K.
Good pub for a drink but avoid the food. Bar staff uninterested and service not as friendly and professional as it should be.
J.
Great local pub with excellent food. They have plenty of stuff on. The new renovation looks good.
J. D.
Atmosphere is OK, better than lots of the surrounding establishments. We played Crossy road for 2 hours and were not disturbed
R. R.
Great place for a pint (and always seems to be mercifully free of screaming kids unlike the neighbouring pub), but the food is average. Always seems incredibly draughty.
M. e.
The commercial is a really good pub and serves really good food and drink. What sets it apart from the nearby Florence is the staff who are very friendly and provide great efficient service
I. G.
Fine selection of craft ales. Great service. Perfect for drinks off Shoreditch High st. Close to station too.
f. p.
Good good...a locals atmosphere...a few staff too far up their own arses, but, for the most part the staff are top bombers ! Pukka atmosphere all round .
L. T.
Lovely atmosphere, good food, affordable drinks, and dog friendly! Me and Zelda always feel very welcome
J. M.
Nice pub in Herne hill to have stop off for a quick pint haven't tried the food but hope to do so soon . Had mistakenly scored one star, now corrected sorry for the confusion 😁

A. G. L.
Food was ok, service wasn’t good. I don’t come back for a drink
N. R.
I actually ate here but I was in trouble late at night with no phone or knowledge of the area with a colleague who was completing drunk and these guys helped me out and helped me get a Cab home, when other people had just ignored my request from help.. thank you so much xxx
D. J.
Nice cosy atmosphere and good decent better and lunch menu. It's probably even nicer when the fireplace is lit.
g. j.
It's a nice pub, not pretentious and it's not filled by mum's with babies and toddler. Which is a common problem with the other pubs in the area.
J. T.
A good pub and if you want to eat it is one of 3 pub in Herne Hill by Brockhall park Dulwich Road
D. P.

I really enjoyed the selection of drinks and the level of service, Liv made sure we had everything we needed and was very efficient
C. P.
The Commercial is a very intriguing pub at the present time. It's a good old fashioned boozer in a great location and the main chap managing the bar seems a good guy. Often a good local crowd and a fun atmosphere.
Unfortunately though many people's interpretation of a 'good pub' relies on good beer and the regular welcome you receive. On the first point, the beer of late has been flat as a pancake. God knows what is happening there but it's been the same for a while. There seems to be no point in mentioning it as the giggly girls and gangly lads behind the bar (who seem to think they're some form of comedy duo) seem to think it's all one big joke.
And speaking of some of the younger staff, their general surly behaviour and attitude is simply not up to scratch to be public facing. It seems when the main manager isn't around, some of staff seem to end up spending a suspicious amount of time hanging around the disabled toilet (often going in together in 2s and 3s) and acting somewhat like they are under the influence of something a bit more hard hitting than half a Doom Bar. I don't care what these individuals do or don't do in the private lives but it's not particularly professional ( particularly going in to the toilets with a large knife which I'm guessing isn't used as a bog brush)
Time for a clear out of some of the staff
T. P.
I I must say that since frequenting hernhill because I am from Herne Hill the commercial has now become my new local and as such I must commend the lovely bar staff. Specifically Evie served with great efficiency and excellent character!
