Reviews of The Derby
D. B.
Great pub, was spot on for spending a Sunday afternoon during rain delays at the cricket! Good selection of pints and nice cocktails too!
H. F.
Not a bad place for a pint. Could do with a bit of a clean and a refurb though, especially the toilets.
It's bad enough they wallpapered over the walls with someone's used up jazz mags, but the fact they've been there for 10 years plus has turned it into a yellowed filth den, it looks like it smells of cigarettes.
Give it a lick of fresh paint, and I'll change the review to 5 stars as I've had some genuinely great times over the years here.
G. F.
The Brown Derby is no more, this makes me sad, I used to drop in here often. I loved this place, even though the toilets were below par!
It's to be taken over by some hideous corporate. So long Brown Derby.
N. P.
Nice bar but the barman wasn't the best one. A little rude. Needs to learn how to speak with customers.
I. B.
Back to normal now. Very busy on a cricket day General good choice of beers, but as normal the toilets are the only thing that let this pub down
Good staff and quick service although it was busy
S. F.
The decor inside is really fun and the staff were very accommodating. The food tasted good - I had a fish finger wrap and it was lovely. Really good price, too. I would recommend it.
T. B.
Great little pub, good range of drinks and friendly staff. Perfect for a couple of pints after a day at The Oval.
D. M.
Nice little pub with some interesting decor. Not cheap but where is. Can get busy on cricket days.
F. F.
What a pub! Nice staff, great food & tapas. Available for booking and special menu. Warm vibe and and great live music!
R.
Only there on a quiet Saturday afternoon, but cute place and staff, friendly relaxed with indy/alternative/quirky decore
S. K.
Really nice vibe, friendly and warm with good drink options and very tasty food! 😋
S. N.
This pub has got one of the best jukeboxes that I've seen. Plays 7" vinyl singles, think it was 50p for 5 selections or something similar. Also a really nice atmosphere, particularly for an evening session. Good range of drinks. Staff could have been friendlier but maybe we were being annoying after a whole day at the cricket...
M. M.
Very funky little bar. Stopped in while we were waiting for a friend to go somewhere else and ended up staying here for ages even after our friends arrived. Nice vibe, cool things to look at, excellent ale.
C. M.
The best thing about this local pub is the really great service. They're efficient, helpful and genuinely kind. I can't enjoy an evening here, however, because of the strong smell of bleach permeating the place. While the food I've had here is good, and interesting, the smell is just too strong for me. However, while not alone in my experience, I do know people who hardly notice the smell at all. Lighting is dim. It's a fine balance between cosy and gloomy, and on occasion it can be the latter. Very nearly special.
L. P.
a quirky local with pretty reasonable drinks prices, only big issue are the toilets which time and again are disgusting and always have broken locks. I've been coming for a year and a half and dont believe they are ever properly serviced. It is not a nightclub so feel this is really unacceptable
K. P.
Quirky decor, well tended barrels and capable (if not particularly friendly) staff
R. S.
Farewell Brown Derby, you're tiny, odd and frequently not well stocked, but you'll be missed.
R. B.
One of the nicest pubs in he area. Food is average but the decor and ambience is like a old style saloon bar. They have regular live jazz music and this attracts a young and laid back crowd .
J. M.
Low lit local pub with a jukebox and often has live music, makes this a fun place to head to with friends. I think the low lighting attracts a lot of people on dates - so expect some public necking. But if you don't mind PDAs and would prefer somewhere quirkier than your usual, big standard pub, then The Brown Derby is a good shout.
T. E. J.
This small bar really surprised me. It's not much from the outside or inside come 730pm but later on it gets busy. Good selection of cocktails, beers and other other drinks. Live band which plays creates a good atmosphere and if there's enough room you can even dance.
J.
What an improvement! If you haven't been here since it's been redone (2012-ish) definitely re-visit this one.
My friend described it as "like a rather large front room decorated by a rather eccentric old dude" - it's certainly got character! Great decor. Usually a couple of decent real ales on, mulled cider for the winter months, & the food that I've tried has been good & reasonably priced! Glad to have this as one of the ever-increasing local options.
S. G.
Great staff and atmosphere. Would have been 5 star but the lager sometimes tastes a little off. Wouldn't stop me from frequenting the place though. Great bar.
V. V.
Very decent pub, cocktails are good but should be banned or pre-prepared when busy as they're so time-consuming to make with so few staff. Good staff but not good efficiency. Should not stop you from going, however, it's really good.
P. D.
Well organised pub, felt very comfortable. Also a decent pint of Tribute which i enjoyed.
A. J.
Surprisingly good food though fairly simple -mainly roasts (I saw beef, chicken and had lamb myself, all looked good), reasonable price, relatively limited choice. Weak for vegetarians, decor eccentric and a bit scruffy but cosy. Good value.
D. H.
Nice atmosphere. Had to wait over an hour for some potatoes wedges though. Staff were a little short with us but ok about it and gave us a couple of drinks instead of one of the side orders. I'd go back from drinks but not for food.
k. b.
Great local - nice eclectic old school vibe (from the jukebox to the taxidermy and some toadstool chairs) good beer, great value food and veggie friendly. No outdoor space though.
S. T.
HUGE Sunday roast for under a tenner. Lovely staff, good range of drinks at the bar. Weekday food is good too, but not so much as the roasts. Definitely worth a visit - a charming little local.
B. M.
Food and drinks are great. Staff are also very friendly, would highly recommend!

The Brown Derby is a new addition to the area (opened 2012), taking over from a tired out old man's pub that was there before. The Brown Derby couldn't be more different. It serves real ales, plays an eclectic array of music, serves quality food and has an East London/ Shoreditchy type of vibe that attracts a younger crowd. I had Sunday lunch there once and have to say that it was decent quality and very good value (though it probably lags behind The Fentiman, which is still the best Sunday lunch pub venue in the area). There is live music on Thursday nights (blues, jazz etc) and generally a lively and welcoming atmosphere. A great place and a welcome addition to the area.
D. O.
Nicest, serving staff I have encounterd in a while, totally welcoming and not over the top politeness, lovely girls.
D. G.
What a little gem can't fault it's staff and food no complaints never judge a book by it's cover goes for this place
A. M.
Nice, quirky pub. Generally quiet during the day. Good food, although it's success has gradually pushed the prices up
R. A. G.
Visited or a friend's birthday on a little jaunt around the area last week and was very impressed.
A chilled, friendly, warm bar with a local feel and all good vibes.
J. F.
Very unique place but quite cool, good beers on tap and whilst I didn't eat anything the Sunday roast smelled great.
T. &. C. L.
Great evening. Made very welcome by Colin & his team. Really great to see all 4 Real Ale pumps on and with the beer in great condition
s.
Cosy place. Really nice atmosphere.
D. P.
OK... yet quite average. Handy for a meet-up prior to cricket at the Oval - and they open 1 hour before the cricket starts!
S. M.
Good option after a day's play at The Oval.
S. W.
Very nice to get real ales.
F. V.
Great atmosphere, friendly service, great good and drinks. It can get busy and noisy at weekends but it's a great pub overall.
M. K.
Nice pub near the Oval station. Good food, drink and love the decor. Worth going there just to see some of the items on display
L. H.
Brilliant for pre cricket match drinks. Great bar service and you don't get ripped off London style for a breakfast.
A. E.
Good beer, friendly service
P.
One of a kind pub with some very interesting artefacts, the staff are all great and the food is decent. A great place to go and wait for it all to blow over.
A. S.
Weird and wonderful. Harry Potter meets steampunk pub with a selection of ales, beers and cocktails. Go for the ambience.
R. P.
Havent tried the food yet but good selection of beer and a good feel/atmosphere to it. Like the old films running in the background which contributes to a great decor
E. S.
Three stars as good selection of the beers. Rib eye steak, medium rare arrived black from one side. Cook. wakey wakey mate. 13 pounds wasted.
S. D. W.

Love this place! Looks like a drive bar, but it's a properly fun night out in Oval. Good drinks, fun staff, eclectic music. Super.
J. G.
Lunch special is always tasty and served fast. Crew is very polite. Pub decor is a bit extravagant
S. J.
Pretty good selection of drinks but served with plastic straws - forgot to say I didn’t want one. Potentially eerie taxidermy.
A. S.
Really, really nice little pub. It's a gorgeous blend of warm yet uncomplicated, funky yay unpretentious.
R. F.
Good atmosphere and alternative selection of beer. Limited seating with view of live music. Recommend arriving early.
