Reviews of The Duke's Head Putney
P. L. R.
Good pub with a dining room overlooking the Thames. Usual Youngs drinks and menu.
R. R.
Always like to call in for a pint when I'm in the area, especially on Fulham home games. Good selection of beer and friendly atmosphere perfectly positioned by the Thames. It's a good pub!!!
C.
Nice atmosphere, with a lot of original Victorian decor and an open fire, great position between the main road and the river. Haven't tried the food but was happy with a pint.
C. G.
Great for a Sunday! Good if you're a meat eater otherwise the veggie Sunday roast is kinda bad
V. L.
Always love coming here. Great atmosphere, lovely staff that take pride in their work. The food is something special, not your usual pub menu.
The space is beautifully decorated, and the views of the Thames are stunning. Young's group guarantees high quality service and food consistency.
I'm not local to Putney, but whenever I'm in the area, I make a point to visit Duke's Head, it's a great go-to for a lunch with a friend, a casual date, a group gathering or drinks in the evening.
Also, if you have a small-medium event coming up, check out their private hire Wolsey room, for which I have left a separate review.
I. H.
Superb pub with a great beer selection if you dont mind Young's brewery. We had Sunday lunch and it was lovely. Not a great selection for vegetarian but there is at least one. The view from the nicely decorated dining room is very pleasing. I would definitely recommend.
A.
Really great pub, good beer selection and cool little place. Went for a Sunday roast which wasn't the best. Hard, dry roasties, greasy Yorkshire pud and while beef was cooked medium rare the cut of sirloin was low quality, full of gristle. Not the best Young's pub food
R. P.
Food was nice. Custemer service was not great. I went to eat in a very poor looking clothe. Handled as a poor guy. But i still give 5 star just about the food. I think the manager has to look on the front of house.
p.
I've had some great meals here and some very average ones too sadly. Today wasn't the best. £5 Scotch egg with over cooked egg but barely cooked meat. Lovely barmaid made good drinks suggestions. Great location on river but don't expect a bargain
P. M.
Good service. I went for my Christmas company dinner. All drinks and dishes were served at the right time. Food quality was ok. Nicely smart Xmas decoration in all the rooms. Turkey dishes was good and the chocolate brownie as well, attached pictures.
C.
Super nice pub by the river, you can sit outside. The place is big, plenty of beer selection, good british menu. We went on the Christmas Day and the atmosphere was lovely, the music and decoration. Really recommended!!!
m. k.
Both fotos taken just down from the pub so a lovely setting. Cosy and christmassy inside. Looked after well in an event upstairs. No lift btw
C. T.
Amazing food, everything fresh and well presented, we went for the first time there for Sunday roast, was alot better than many other places and everything was perfect, toffee pudding was one of the best we had, well done to everyone, we definitely gonna return soon.
H. B.
Really nice pub overlooking the Thames and Putney bridge with a great atmosphere. Food can be ordered from bar downstairs (bar snacks and burgers) or upstairs which is more main meals. The food was really tasty, however service was quite slow (was very busy though). There is a wide range of drinks available (including both beers/ciders and cocktails). Whilst the food is very reasonably priced, drinks are quite expensive.
C. F.
Lovely food. Nice place with outstanding view to river!! 5*
V. P.
Lovely all around. The choice of beer is great. Staff is super friendly, great guys to have a chat with. The venue also follows covid rules pretty strictly even for the downstairs bar that only served customers that will drink outside. The area in front of the bar is also nice with some benches and a nice view on the riverbank.
K. M.
I would not eat here again, drinks on the river at back only. Roast was awful £18 and service was terrible. We had to clear our own table as we were forgotten about. This was a bday celebration (10 people dining). Disappointing.
G. W.
Did my knee in on my run today and needed to get a taxi back. I didn't have a mask for the taxi so this pub very kindly gave me one to get home, as well as a pint of Guinness. Legends
p. s.
Great pub very friendly and welcoming atmosphere, will definitely visit again
p.
Lovely terrace on the Thames, good chicken burger, pulled beef burger averag. The place has a new beautiful interior.
S. M.
Great Youngs beer...what else to say 🤣
K.
Had a few issues with promptness of service. Hour wait between ordering and recieving food. Food flavour and presentation is great. Whether after the wait it was commensurate with price, this is debatable. It was extreme. After one hour they returned with the unavailability of a menu item. Not acceptable. Pleasant attitude and service from the staff. Hand drier in the bathroom does not work.
S. K.
I love this place. good taste steak and beer. great interior It is a place worth visiting.
B. K.
Great staff. They were kind and helpful. Historically atmospheric pub right by Putney Bridge and the Thames. Beautiful spot.
S.
Lovely ambience but is lacking on the wine list. Cheap wines sold at expensive prices. For example we had a Rioja Tempranillo for £29.50. There’s good Tempranillo and then there’s cheap brand (and very sweet) Tempranillo, and this was of the latter.
g. v.
We planned our visit at DHP for a few weeks and the expereince lived to up to expectations. The staff and location was grea right by the riverside. We loved the food and the service was amazing.
T. L.
Pretty decent third date pub for me and my 8 speed modified fast and furious Brompton.
Cheapest pint, Young’s Bitter, £4.50 and lifesaver crisps, £1.30.
No beer garden, no fireplace with live fire, and most importantly no china beer jugs. Straight conical pint shaped glasses only.
Seems to be the perfect boat race start line pub.
L. K.
Empty for lunch . It’s clearly not cheap for what you get (£5 for a small bowl of chips!) but the service is there and you get attention, probably a touch less from when busy! Lacks a terrace but otherwise was decent
E.
First pub visit under the latest Covid rules - not too painful. If you forget your mask they have some on the door.
F. G.
Been here few months ago for Sunday roast and it was outstanding so I've decided to return with some friends last night as I was in the area.
All in all a good experience although, when the food arrived, 2 of our dishes were forgotten from the order and as my friend has decided not to bother I ended up eating by myself.
I have to say that the chorizo sausages were delicious and full of flavour with the right kick to them and perfectly balanced out by the purple potatoes; one of my friends had the Kiev and also said it was really really good.
Must say the had the decency not to charge us for my meal which was delayed so I’ve found this very fair and kind; mistakes do happen and this one was resolved in a very good way.
Will definitely recommend and visit again for a great dining experience 😊
U. S.
Delicious and imaginative food. We have been twice and it has been a (re)discovery. We’ll definitely be back again
The staff are very friendly and attentive
L. B.
Fabulous restaurant with great ambience overlooking the river.
Was a little disappointed with the fishcakes we both ordered. Really could have done with more fish in them and a lot less filler.
B. H.
Stopped here for one, good selection of beers and wines and allow takeaway drinks so you can walk along the river with them
M. H.
Charming pib by the river with a cracking selection of beers and nice food!
L. J.
Fantastic pub, lovely in every way.
G. L.
Had a great Sunday Lunch at the Dukes Head, Roast Beef perfectly cooked and plenty of vegetables, location is perfect as its on the edge of the river unfortunately no beer garden but views of river from restaurant were great, waiting staff were really friendly taking time with us even though it was really busy, will most certainly go again
P. S.
Nice place for a refreshing drink by the river, watching the boats go by. You have the option to drink outside if you like.
C. H.
Lovely food and the waiters had a great sense of humour!
C. R.
Really great food, good location on the river by Putney Bridge.
J. J.
Nice staff and a great location. Take-away beers mean you can enjoy drinks on the public walkway by the riverside but prices are a little steep for a plastic pint.
F. S. S.
Amazing food and really nice bar staff. Wish every local boozer could be like this. Amazing scotch eggs and apple crumble. Also bartender went out of her way to accommodate us and even served us at the poser table in the pub bit. Would highly recommend on a Sunday and on the river so couldn’t ask for more.
T. D.
If life is based on the greatness of each individual experience, this is the most brilliant pub in the world between 2008 and 2021
G. B.
Great Sunday roast! Good table service from the lovely American girl :-)
J. C.
Very busy (as expected on a Saturday evening). Good beer.
A. A.
An excellent pub with an amazing restaurant as well 🙌🏼
J. M.
A bit expensive, but a nice and very well located pub.
D. J.
Lovely staff. Even let my buddy park his paddle board inside. Nice selection of beers too.
J. D.
We had lunch here today and it was soooo nice, beautiful restaurant, gorgeous views, delicious food and very lovely and attentive staff :) thank you x
A. C.
Love this pub, great food and service. Pretty location near the river
M. D.
Great atmosphere, fantastic location, food was decent too!
J. G.
Pretty good. Nice ambience. Good service.
S. P.
I have been there several times and meals are very good. However, on my last visit I have dropped them down to 3 stars for two reasons. Firstly, my meal was partially hot and parts were luke warm. Secondly, and more important, I asked for my beef NOT to be rare. It was. I did not want to spoil the event with my friends and so it went without complaint.
This, further posting, has been entered after a reply from dukes head. My initial stars were 3 however I shall now raise it to 4 as an average for my total visits.
G. A.
Staff are friendly... they have a great system for being served and clean and very pleasant place.. nice surroundings and a good crowd of people.. highly recommend... enjoy..
A. C.
Great food and nice place to eat outside next to the river
D. W.
Nice pub on the picturesque Putney riverside. Food and drinks are very expensive and not very exciting.
A. B.
This pub,, is my favourite,, the Guinness is superbly keep and tastes excellent,, c u next time I'm in London,, to visit my son,, 😂
J. C.
Great beer, food and service
M. R.
Lovely food and ver nice hospitality
K. D.
Its a lovely place. We had a nice jam roly poly there on a quiet weekday afternoon. *BUT the Chicken and Leek Pie was not good. Hardly any filling and mostly pastry. Probably avoid that. My partner was very pleased with the Sausage and Mash though.
J. B.
This is a lovely pub. Child friendly and has baby changing facilities as well as a disabled toilet. The staff were extremely friendly both at the bar and serving the food. The food was very tasty too! You can eat the food in the bar area or there is a restaurant section. They have an outdoor seating area at the back of the pub, which is seconds away from the river.
H. C.
I'm gluten and dairy free (Drs orders), and the chef came down to talk me through some options. Had some bants on the footy too. Great guy
A. S. C.
Very cozy Victorian pub and restaurant overlooking the Thames. Awesome view of Bishops Park..
Best Fish cake I have ever had, all the food was great. Service was excellent and Ian the manager took great care of us.
Looking forward to our next trip and trying it more scrumptious menu items..
5 out of 5
T. A.
Amazing customer service, tasty food and drinks, although drinks could be a bit cheaper
G. T.
Great beer and fantastic food! The vegetarian roast was particularly excellent, my partner said it was the best she has ever had - that's quite a compliment from her. Lovely atmosphere. I highly recommend.
J. G.
Our local pub and a go to for anyone looking for good views, delicious food and just an all around great atmosphere. We’ve been coming here for years and it just keeps getting better. They’ve always got great events happening like their monthly quizzes and wine & dine events. This will always be our favorite pub!
L. H.
Popular pub close to the River Thames, good range of traditional pub food (f&c, pies, sausages, etc.) including vegetarian options, as well as good drinks. Attentive and friendly staff. It's worth booking a table for lunch or dinner because it does get full.
T. d. J.
We visited here to watch the start of the 2019 Boat race between Oxford and Cambridge... Vibey and fun place all supporting the event. They had delicious burgers and potato wedges (shack food) for the day. Service was a little slow but understandable considering how packed it was! Drinks were reasonably priced and the staff were very friendly. The ladies bathroom downstairs is quite a pain to get to as downstairs is very small and narrow, but otherwise there was a nice atmosphere. Not sure how it compares to otherwise ordinary days! Will return for drinks on the riverside - nice views and location close to the tube.
I. C.
Great food and service, helpful with our hound and a lovely site plus some victorian glass and decor. Plenty of toilets too! The Eponymous Burgers were incredibly good.
b. t.
It's a lovely pub and has a good menu in the restaurant bit but we've stopped going because time after time we've been terribly disappointed by the execution. Food is often poor and we've had to send a glass of red wine back because it was obvious that the bottle had been open too long. It's such a shame we'd love to keep visiting but tired of being disappointed.
P. C.
Lovely pub I'm a great area. Nice view of the river out the front windows. Some good beers, not a wide selection of items on the food menu. Though their chips are incredible fluffy!
A. C.
Great Ambience and Service. We had a great time
A. B.
My experience may be a little inaccurate, as its based on being a guest at a wedding.
There's not anything much I can fault about my experience except for my choice of dessert which I had higher or more expectations off due to the food which came before. Starters and main course were delicious, and some of the best food I've had at a pub or wedding. Everything immaculately presented with flavours to match. Dessert however was described as a mousse, which I had visions of it being light and fluffy, but when received it was more of a ganache or something you'd find on top of a cake, it was quite solid in its texture, and as a result I was unable to eat it all.
The lady serving as throughout the day was a credit to herself and the business. Very polite, with a well mannered and soft temperament.
If I'm ever in the area, I would definitely return.
B. K.
Nice roast, friendly staff and good range of beers. Lovely view of the Thames too if you get a windos seat.
R. C.
Very pleasant large pub, in a gorgeous location on the river. It has plenty of space , good beer, especially Young's, and an extensive menu of unpretentious and not unduly expensive pub food.
S. A.
Wonderful views on the river Thames. We go there with our dog, so we normally just have a burger in the pub side. But there is a beautiful restaurant overlooking Thames. Perfect for weekend brunches, Sunday roast, very cute restaurant and the pub is quite ok as well.
T.
We booked The Dukes Head for our wedding day. This wonderful venue with their incredible team really and truly made our day extra special. Booking a wedding in a pub might sound a little scary but these guys went the extra mile to make sure everything was perfect. Not a single guest (out of 60+ people) had a complaint. The food was incredible!! We had 180 dishes delivered during dinner and over 200 canapés during drinks. I can't tell you enough how amazing this place is. The team on the night were SENSATIONAL. Nothing was too much to ask and they made sure that all we had to do was sit back and enjoy our day. The next day they were there to offer help packing up with smiles on their faces and happy that we enjoyed our day. Rob, Andrew and Jake, a special mention to you guys- it wouldn't have been as amazing without you guys. If you asked me if I would have changed my venue after this.. No ways!! These guys know what they are doing and they work as a team to ensure everything runs like clockwork.
THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU
V. L.
Nice place ! little bit cold 🥶 in pub.
A. M.
Atmospheric and historic pretty pub by the river, pint around £5, standard for the area. In the summer, people tend to spill out along the river front. Friendly staff, also dining area and you can rent the space for events.
N. S. P.
We go for our weekly RPG sessions. Wonderfully welcoming and full of atmosphere. Wide selection of gins and ciders. Food is nice but as always in London a bit pricey.
M. R.
Great pub, had a very good Sunday lunch here recently. Has a mote tradition pub and dining area on the ground floor and an even more relaxed bar downstairs. Great for long winter nights or balmy summer days.
F. W.
The best sticky toffee pudding ever. Great service too.
R. R.
Great pub, quick service. Clearly following the government guidelines. Only complaint is that I'd love Young's to add more non alcoholic options, a wine would be great!
N. B.
Very good place for recreation and wandering around.
L. K.
Reliably great pub. Beautiful spacious interior, friendly staff, good beer and great food. Had the tarragon fishcake from the Vintage Pub Menu. Sensational. Lots of places nearby to walk it off...
M. J.
Very good traditional pub with comfortable seating. Very spacious. Great location near the river. Would need to go again to find out if it warranted a 5
C. D.
We hired the Wolsey Room for our wedding and used the Rowing Club for our evening reception, and I have to say everything was perfect. The food was spot on, the staff all went the extra mile to make sure we had an incredible time and all our guests commented on a perfect location and venue. Highly recommended.
M. C. (.
We just went upstairs for 1 hour at a private birthday party, so can't say that much. The pub looked nice and quite crowdy, within 10 minutes walking from Putney Bridge underground station. Staff looked friendly. Not buggy friendly the entrance with some stairs.
B. P.
Warm, cosy I must say, child out, beautiful and specious. This place is one of the most specious and beautiful pub along river Thames between Hammersmith Bridge and Putney Bridge. A wonderful restaurant section with an amazing views overlooking the River Thames. A special private room for hire in the first floor. Clean toilet and very lovely staff. Great goods from the kitchen.
H. P.
A wonderful pub with a great outdoor space to sit by the river and enjoy the weather, as well as friendly people working behind the bar and serving tables!
S. K.
Came here on a Saturday night which was our mistake as we hadn't though about the the football which was just letting out across the river - within half an hour the place was rammed! It wasn't TOO noisy and certainly not rowdy, just very very busy! It quietened as we sat there though so I would just say watch the time you arrive.
The staff were friendly and plenty helpful, but we did notice something odd about them. The entire evening all staff were making a huge amount of noise! Chucking empty bottles across the the bar into the bin, slamming the little gadgets on the coffee machine. I mean these bangs and crashes in an otherwise fairly peaceful pub made us jump every single time! It got worse as they started to clean up which makes me wonder if it was a hint to customers to leave.
Either way, nice place but if you're looking for a quiet one, it's not for you!
M. J.
A lovely traditional pub with a great selection of beers! Great traditional food too, I went for the burger and enjoyed it thoroughly. Would recommend for both going for a meal and for a pleasant gathering with friends.
C. B.
Not going to comment on the food but a beautiful pub on the river. Not quite the same during the day but with sunshine and river views at Putney there can't be much to grouse about. Suspect it's buzzing at night as walking past last Friday, people were spilling out into the streets and by the river. Love this pub! Beer is good too...
J. L.
Great food and views of the river. Plenty of space to spread out inside.
M. P.
We hired a functional room to celebrate my birthday. Everything went slick - from booking to the party. We had a live band and they were happy to accommodate, they served some nice canapé and drinks. Highly recommended.
T. R.
The food here is okay at best. Friends of mine got smaller dishes like the Scotch Egg and Meatballs and didn't complain. I ordered the main meal of Sausage and Mash, which on the menu is described really well. At £13 with no additional sides like vegetables or peas or anything, I was expecting it to be good. I will regurgitate and eat this meal again if I'm incorrect, but this meal was re-heated in the microwave and was just utterly unappealing. The Mash tasted like it had been frozen, had no seasoning whatsoever. The gravy was also flavourless and tasted of little more than water. The sausages were okay, but not totally hot all the way through, just warm and weren't juicy or tasty. The best thing about this meal was the crispy shallots which were probably the only part of the meal that hadn't been "cooked" by them.
B. J.
Great traditional pub in Putney. Good for a beer on the Riverside.
T.
Great pub on the river with attentive and friendly staff. No complaints but, in my opinion, the menu could be expanded.
D. C.
Nicely refurbished Young's pub with a cracking Sunday roast. The decor in the bar and dining room work well with the river views at the back and the more cozy traditional bar at the front. Downstairs is a separate bar with an edgier feel to it (or as edgy as a chain pub can be in Putney): Banksy-esque art work, cocktails, chicken wings and a little space for sitting out on the street.
Another nice welcoming pub from Young's.
I. M.
Great spot to enjoy an afternoon beer by the riverside during warmer weather.
T. M.
I attended a family party on the 22nd of August in a private room. The food was delicious and the staff were really friendly and helpful. In particular Jake who is just a super star, whatever you are paying him it is no where near enough!
I. M.
This Riverside gastropub has something for everyone. It scores well for location, food and service. Recommended
P. B.
Good beer and friendly atmosphere
G. B.
Nice pub steep prices
M. M.
Ok food for the price. Nice atmosphere
J. J.
Excellent Sunday roast with decent Vegetarian and Vegan Options. Friendly staff and a superb location.
Absolutely worth it
L. L.
Location is great and they have nice outdoor seating along the Thames. But the inside is a little basic/ordinary, the drinks are expensive, and when we were there they played very poppy music which was fun but only for a little while.
C. R.
Lovely pub, staff are so friendly and efficient. Will come back again
C. L.
Lovely food and helpful staff. Really light and airy upstairs with lovely view of the river. Great to grab a drink in the evening out on the river too
s. h.
Comfortable and welcoming.
Good real ale as well.
R. W.
Cozy place for a pint, didn't try the food.
S. S.
Just saw this in pub in old episode of Minder !
A. K. N.
Great place to relax and unwind after a long walk around the area!!!
S. I.
A cracking drinking establishment to visit all year round. Always has good Ale on tap and a perfect place to visit before heading across the water to watch Fulham.
W. D.
Really nice pub and bar, good prices and decent selection of drinks in a great venue,
Had lunch however and the delays on it being ready (as you pick it up from the kitchen bar) were severe,
N. C.
A grand Victorian grade II listed Boathouse-style pub and restaurant by the river for early evening drinks, to watch the world go by, or a light lunch or hearty Sunday roast, a local’s favourite for nearly 150 years. It is also a muster point for former students from the “boaty” universities – Oxford, Cambridge & Durham, who always seem surprised when they see each other – hardly a surprise, you’ve all been coming here for decades!
M. L.
The food is AMAZING at this lovely, cozy and cheery pub (yes, even on a rainy day) which overlooks the Thames in Putney. I discovered it during the boat races one year and I keep coming back on account of the food, view and atmosphere.
The fresh breads they make on-site are amazing and the menu changes regularly, though with a few staples which remain at all times. Their sunday roast is probably one of the best I´ve had (they offer several different meat choices) and it is my locale of choice when bringing friends/guests to london to get a pub experience yet with a great view, great food and ideal location for a day of shopping in Putney or Fulham!
B. M.
Food was really well cooked and had great flavour. Big step up from standard pub food. Dining room is bright and has lovely views across the river.
J. D.
Nice atmosphere friendly staff. The chicken Kiev was a let down , and the veggie menu is very limited. The desert was good.
D.
Good traditional pub on the south bank of the Thames near Putney Bridge. Does have dedicated restaurant area, otherwise serves various burgers & loaded wedges as bar food
B. M.
exceptional sunday roasts. big and tasty. wait staff were very attentive but the food was quite slow to come out the kitchen (3hrs for main and dessert)
A. M. J.
This Thames-side pub has a gorgeous interior, friendly staff, great food and drinks. Recommended.(Please 'like' this review if you find it helpful.)
A. S.
Despite having a wonderful outside area by the river and a gorgeous building, The Duke’s Head is actually disappointingly average. At least it was when I visited on a Friday afternoon. The drinks were expensive (even by Putney standards) and the inside was totally charmless. Shame, because the outside of the building is really beautiful.
K. R.
Beautiful dining room on the river.
G. M.
Good place, well located in Putney for a pint or have food at.
H. C.
Lovely pub right by the river. Perfect on summer days. Food is above average, better than most standard pub fare.
K. J.
Great place, lovely staff. Fab location.
S. K.
Enjoyed a couple of pints with my son here and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's in a top location opposite the river and the weather at the time was stunning. Can't wait to return!
N. W.
Lovely roast dinner and a great selection of gins!
M. W.
Such friendly staff, delicious beers, and a great atmosphere. Highly recommended for a Sunday afternoon of goodness.
P. B.
Decent pub for lunch. I advise the restaurant on the ground floor overlooking the river. Well designed and airy with a solid selection of gastro-pub nosh.
G. G.
Brilliant place to go for a glass of something or a better than average pub lunch. Plus they are very dog friendly which is a bonus for me.
A. J.
This pub is awesome! A beautiful location and the hospitality is very professional. Would strongly recommend this place to anyone looking to escape the tourist traps and see what real London is all about!
B. W.
Slightly over priced for what it offers but if you're after a drink by the river this is definitely one of the best places to go. Location is great, the interior decor is well chosen and no messy bar. Give it a try
L. C.
Lovely place to eat
Manager very friendly to offer us a complementary drink and desert for minor delay in food .
The food is amazing and they will look after you
Well done guys
Luis

My dad used to frequent the Duke's Head when he was in college +- 30 years ago so it was an honour to visit last weekend! What a great experience - such friendly people!
G. F.
Great pub by the river in Putney Embankment. Ideal in the summer for outside drinking. Good selection of beers and great food too.
M. W.
A another lovely shift working along side the dukes head staff. LOVELY MEAL. Well cooked, great presentation In a lovely family and doggy friendly environment. See you soon xx
M. B.
Good pub and atmosphere
B. A.
Had a beer on the patio here. Friendly staff, great view of the river and reasonable prices.
C. C.
Great English pub, nice view on the river, elegant contest. Good food
T. C.
Superb venue. Beautiful pub in a historic and stunning setting by the great river. Service, food and drink all excellent.
D. A.
Great location with an awesome view! Quick friendly service.
T. W.
Absolutely loved it. Food fantastic, beer great and service top notch. Prices were good. Visit here!
