Reviews of The Lord Napier Star

An original gem of Hackney! This is a must pub for everybody. Beautiful deco and gorgeous terrace plus extraordinary stuff fast and friendly. Supportive of the area and the artist featuring awesome street art in the façade. Great selection of beers and tasty burgers and fries plus really yummy vegan option such as the chicken burger

Lovely first experience at The Lord Napier Star! Have been planning on visiting for a long time and today was the day! After a long walk around Hackney Wick, I stopped by for a refreshing Aperol Spritz on the rooftop. Quick & spotless service, great drinks and a great view of the area! ✨🌆. I'll definitely visit again with friends and thoroughly recommend - it's a really lovely spot!

It was a lovely experience we had. The bartender told us that they currently are not allowed to use the coffee machine as the staff have not had a training for it yet, however he went extra mile and got us filter coffee. We went there for sunday roast and few pints. It was a large portion of place and delicious pigs in blanket. They accept cash and card payments. There is a beautiful rooftop terrace as well. Such a lovely place. Definitely recommend.

New pub in old squat/ derelict building in Hackney Wick.
Streetart decorated and this has been updated / improved for this trendy pub.
£5 a pint is a bit steep but par for the course in London. Good rooftop terrace.

Great pub that's preserved the spirit of Hackney inside and out. A brilliant mix of quirky, alternative and industrial. The terrace on top is beautiful and there's a great selection of clean tasting, flavourful beers and lagers.

Great pub, easily accessible due to Hackney Wick station next door. Also easy to book a table for birthdays and larger events as they have an upstairs with another bar. Would recommend to those in the area for a cheeky pint.

Wonderful reclaimed pub apparently had been a squat for a long time. Friendly service and although waited a bit for the food as bit of a mix up was a fabulous roast that if I had made that at home I would be very proud indeed! They more than made up for the mix up with good hosting. Given its size, 3 levels including a rooftop bar, service was fast and as it was a sunny afternoon had drinks up in sunshine to start is an amazing range including milk stouts. I was sad to leave at the end of the night and couldn't recommend it more ! Well done ✔

Really refreshing to see a furry friendly LGBTQF+ pub in what is a traditional very tory and conservative neighbourhood.
The furry mural on the rooftop is delightful and made me feel all sorts of things inside. I look forward to inviting my fellow furries to my new favourite local.
see you all on the dance floor x

Loved the roof terrace, which was covered and heated. Enjoyed a nice selection of beers and Thai curry. Friendly customer service and lively atmosphere.

I was looking forward to trying the pub since it's refurb, the place looks excellent and does have a good atmosphere.
The drinks were a bit pricey and some of the bar staff are obviously not fully trained yet but in general the overall experience was good.

What an awesome pub! I've been walking past for the last fifteen years and never thought I'd ever see it reopen. They've done a fantastic job, and the beers and roasts are epic

Great find on the way to watch football. Respectfully refurbish with loads of staff on hand (unlike other reviews.) Will definitely return.

I love this pub. Beautiful looking, staff lovely, food tasty. It’s down to earth and unpretentious. Very relaxing pub.

A genuinely lovely pub right in the heart of Hackney Wick.
The Sunday Roast (both veggie and meat) are huge and beautifully cooked, combined with some lovely beers it’s great for lazy day drinking or evenings out.
Highly recommended if you’re staying/visiting the area?

Amazing blend of old school boozer, funky decor and suoersized graffiti canvas. Iconic Hackney Wick pub with a damn good food residency.

Fantastic pub but too few staff and very slow service. Patience is required if you want to drink here. No good for a 'quick pint'.
My partner and I were set up to have a few drinks in the afternoon but because the service was so slow and the queue so long, coupled with the fact that bar staff did not know who should be served next and people sneaking in front, we left having had only one drink. Having said that they have just opened so hopefully will iron out these issues quickly! Looking forward to a decent menu in coming months with a Sunday Afternoon Lunch.
This is our local boozer and we want it to be a success.
The renovation is spectacular!

Such a beautiful pub right next to Hackney Wick station. Really spacious inside with a lovely rooftop and even an outdoor terrace on the ground floor. They serve Thai food and being half Thai myself, I was really impressed! The food was so delicious and even served on plates which you would traditionally see at street food vendors in Thailand!

I went there today with a group and we were told they were short staffed and the food might be delayed. I admired the honesty and the food was amazing, not late and the service was fantastic. Credit to the staff 👍

Great addition to Hackney Wick, have visited three times now. Once on a Friday night with friends, and twice at weekends with my kids. Has been good every time. Will admit a major fail on one food order, but the manager (when notified) rectified it with a full refund including drinks so can’t fault that.
Talking of drinks, they have a fantastic choice of draught beers, which evolve frequently but my favourite experience was when they served my three young children their lime and sodas to look “as fancy as a G&T”, which we all appreciated. Sometimes it’s the little touches.
Final point - if visiting at a weekend, check the West Ham fixtures as I was there during that time, and they do get flooded with the post-match crowds which changes the vibe somewhat.

Lovely pub, lots of space, great atmosphere; remarkably good sound getup and perfect lighting - I'm a fan of low light, but it's tough to get right. The pub's spread over two floors, plus a roof terrace and was still buzzing on a Thursday night.
I. O.
Spacious. Has a good crowd (if your young, unlike me). Music was so loud before people started dancing. I don't get why places do that. Build up the ambiance. Or am I too old.
A.
Lovely place. Very tasty burgers and great wine🧡

Mad to see a legendary squat being turn back into a really decent boozer. Good beer, nice food and really friendly staff. The roof tops lovely in the sun

2017: My favourite building in London
But thats just me!
UPDATE Sep 2021: Now a new fully functioning pub whoop! :)
K. C.
Great beer selection and a decent number of taps that rotate frequently, great tunes every time I've been in and the food is absolutely banging. If you're in Hackney Wick you ought to pop in
T. G.
Excellent pub, incredible vibe very buzzing
M. O.
Love this place, great beer selection, friendly service and a real addition to the neighbourhood. I’ve enjoyed both the Thai-inspired bar food and the roast dinner.
T. C.
Beautiful and exciting renovation, some decent beers (can't compete with Beer Merchants or Howling Hops but why would you try?) and a fantastic terrace, great for catching the sunset over the treetops of Victoria Park as the trains rumble by
EDIT
Beer selection is ON POINT (on pint?) as of now, had some great stuff from Pressure Drop etc alongside some great staples
R. E.
What a great refurbishment. One issue, easily solved, is to list the beer on tap, on a blackboard. It’s difficult to know what’s on offer, type of beer, price etc.
P. G.
Great pub! Good beers, sound music and plenty of space including the roof terrace
F. S.
A very nice pub. Lots of different areas, a roof terrace, garden terrace and wide variety of craft beer und good food.
A. E.
Such a great pub. So many rooms, delicious food, really nice staff
R. P.
Great staff, great facilities, affordable price and well refurbished building. Half a minute walk from the station if you're thirsty, and amazing rooftop for warmer days

An LGBTQ+ oasis where we ended up after an art opening earlier, lovely icey g&t’s …some people could not resist and pushed chairs apart and turned into a dance floor, such fun: much freedom and laughter.
A. W. W.
Good pub/bar & diner. Very good selection of beers, efficient friendly staff
m. d.
Went there before the west ham game, couple of bars on different floors, made it easy to get a drink, like the roof top as well.
D. H.
Lovely bar with really nice decor. Really nice covered roof top area too.
R. S.
A startling 'find' in a run-down area - but rather over-priced at £5.60 for a standard pint of beer 😟
L. P.

Great pub. Very grateful that they took the risk and renovated the building.

Great fun, great venue and looks awesome

Best roast in East London....colossal!
P. J.
I love this building. It's a landmark, it adds character to the area and it tells the story of how the area has changed. Who was there in the past (working class geezers), who has been there recently (artists) and who is now taking over (developers and middle class hipsters). To me it is a statement more than a building. There is something sad about Hackney wick now, as if it's been invaded and occupied by unwanted people, but at least it's still colourful. I hope the historical industrial buildings survive, but I'm fearful of that. Enjoy them while you can.

Real pub and an icon in Hackney wick

Really nice style pub with multiple floors including a covered roof garden. Really nice selection of beers as well.
B. B.
Excellent restoration of a classic east London pub. Restored from a burnt out shell into a lovely craft pub.
Impressed with the craft beer options from New England IPA's to an Imperial Stout at 12% and good prices too compared to other bars in the local area.
Sat on the ground level first, near the bar and was pleased to overhear local brewers enjoying a drink too which says alot.
For my next drink I asked if the rooftop was open and luckily it was. Nice views of the area from views of the Olympic Park to the urban Hackney area to an excellent view of the railway and Station (my favourite haha)
The atmosphere was very relaxed and welcoming and the barman I talked to was knowledgeable and friendly.
If you're not into craft they also have a wide range of other drinks such as lagers, wines and cocktails for example.
There is also a quiet room and a restaurant or events room on the first floor and another smaller cocktail style bar on the rooftop.
Only visited for a quick couple out of curiosity on a small craft beer route and was quite impressed. Will revisit for sure.
Closest transport -
London Overground from Hackney Wick (1 min walk)
London Buses from near the pub
Or you can take a Walk through the Olympic Park & Westfield to get to Stratford station aswell.
