J. T.Nice little pub with a pleasant atmosphere/vibe. The standard selection of beers on tap 2x Staropramen for £10.50 in London is a pretty good price. Didn't try the food though having seen it served to other tables, looked good. Would recommend as a stop if you're in the area!
R. W.Hired the upstairs function room for my birthday and we had a great time - staff were so friendly and helpful, great range of drinks and the buffet food we had went down a storm. Thanks to all at the Marquis for helping us make it such a fun day!

A. S.Good beer and a lovely atmosphere. Not usually too crowded or noisy. They do a great vegetarian burger.
R. O.Went here for a small work Christmas do. Was v busy and convivial but service was incredibly slow and they seemed to be massively understaffed. Nothing at all happened unless we asked for it, and the main course arrived (after chasing up) about 2 hours after we sat down. And then they reminded us that they needed the table back for the next booking! Gets 4 stars (just) because the food was actually very good, and the staff that were there were friendly and apologetic. Probably would be ok at other times, but don't expect to get in and out quickly!

A. V.Fantastic Pub, any time of day. The staff are fantastic, happy and helpful. The interior is clean and traditional with a lot of space to stand or sit. The menu looked delicious, but it was morning when I dined, so I opted for the veggie English breakfast, sans beans. Delish!! Everything was perfectly cooked and tasted great. I emphasize the service, seems like all the workers there care about the place...will visit again!
v. v.Fantastic place! I used to live across the road but I still come here regularly. Staff are always upbeat. Atmosphere is great. Good range of beers and the food is well above average... Highly recommended!

D. T.A simple "check in" using the NHS trick or treat app and all is good, let the drinking begin. The pub is likely to be named after the First Marquess Cornwallis, he of battle of Yorktown fame during the American War of Independence. He then went on to have a bit of a bash with Tipu Sultan. It could however be named after a ship of the same name, most famous as a short time prison ship used to transport "criminals" from Ireland to Australia. Anyway, none of this affects the beer which is absolutely fine! Staff are great and helpful. A single cask on at the moment (Doombar). A very pleasant place to pop in for a pint

But this was out of stock! Can't imagine it would have been difficult to whizz over to the Waitrose across the road 🤪😛 but good drinks and great wheat beer.

B. M.My second visit here, first time getting food. Manager responded positively to a small complaint and was very helpful. The meal was pretty good, the pictured steak was supposed to be medium rare, overdone but it was nice anyway. Reasonable prices, it's a big hit for after work drinks.

P. O.Myself and my friends had a fantastic time at The Marquis at the weekend when we came for a roast. I know a few pubs in the area and the food really stands out here as well as being a stunning historic building. It's a quiet area and has a nice outside bit so its really perfect for a sunny day especially after lockdown. Really recommend this and we will be back.

t. t.I came in, making a pretty weird request, i asked to buy some cheese because i had forgotten to buy some from the supermarket, they were so accommodating, went to the kitchen, gave me a HUGE box of cheese and didn't charge me. Really friendly, place looked lovely. 10/10 service! :)

K.Gorgeous pub! One of the few central London pubs that seems to have been overlooked by tourists so it still feels like a real neighbourhood local. Great atmosphere, varied beer selection and fantastic food: quite possibly the best fish and chips I’ve had in London. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because the food took ages to come and one of plates had been left sitting so it was cold. But staff were really apologetic and made us a new one. Will definitely make this a regular spot for Sunday dinner.

F. J.Lovely place for a drink, but food service was rubbish. Convenient for Russell Square tube, and relatively quiet on the Sunday we visited. The food was okay, not outstanding for the prices which were quite steep. The service was slow, and lacking in attention. Our party of 4 got food over a 20 min period, my first lot of chips were fries and cold, replacements never arrived, we couldn't get the waiter's attention persistently so it felt like they were ignoring us and they under refunded the chips that never came. Not impressed at all. Would go back to drink but not to eat.

Just wish you could have beers outside after 9pm but I guess it's just the licensing around the area. Would recommend for a group of friends, but not for a date as the music can be a bit too loud :)
S. B.Popular place during the day and there a good amount of outdoor seating in nice weather. Inside is very large too with loads of tables tucked in every corner. Good range of drinks behind the bar and there's a nice food menu including a decent range of sandwiches at lunch. Bar staff were quick considering how busy it was. Lots of people inside appeared to be having business meetings so it wasn't the most relaxing of pubs, but stood outside in the sun was great.

T. O.I went to play pub quiz on a Monday night which was a nice night out. The host brought a good vibe and the teams were enthusiastic. To eat, I ordered a burger, which was very nice. Good selection of beers on tap. If you do want to join the quiz, reserve a table ahead of time and note that the rest of the continues on as normal without turning down the music. This was surprising, but didn't distract too much from a fun evening.

J. H.Reserved a section on the ground floor and was treated to fantastic service, great beers and great food for my wifes birthday. It is a bustling, noisy pub with character and charm most nights and we added to the bustle and noise! The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the beef burger. The squid, chicken, cheese and meat boards were all super. We were very well looked after.

The burger was a little bit smaller than expected it was tasty and a good meal. I would certainly recommend dropping by here for a burger if you are in for a nice pub meal. They also have a much larger range of food items but I can only recommend the burger I had.

From the time of booking, the staff was extremely supportive towards making everything happen according to our liking.

The place was good and the staff were nice and friendly so I decided I should also grab some dinner, we all ended up going with the burger. The burger was a little bit smaller than expected it was tasty and a good meal. I would certainly recommend dropping by here for a burger if you are in for a nice pub meal. They also have a much larger range of food items but I can only recommend the burger I had.

The only issue was that as a veggie the nut roast was too small and soggy and didn’t fill me up (not enough nuts/protein perhaps?) so I had to order sweet potato fries too! I would go back here and maybe order something else.

F. P.We got to eat here for our welcome orientation and was able to get two free drink tickets. They brew their own beers but I didn't get to try that I got the Guinness and a cider they had. We were able to get to try some appetizers such as the calamari, peppers, sausage roll, croquette and chicken wings. The chicken wings were okay but the rest of the food was so good. We ended up getting fish and chips as well. This place is an amazing pub and wished we were able to go again before leaving London.

Good selection of both alcoholic and soft drinks. Being a Gin Drinker the selection at the Marquis was wide ranging.. was happy to ‘try’ a few flavoured ones which were moorish.
Would absolutely return here on another visit to London.

Second time round - managed to get the Roast! There was plenty and all of it delicious. A much better experience than the time below.
Attempted to get Sunday Roast at the pub, only to be told a lot of the menu had run out already.. not a major problem. Proceeded to order croquettes and BBQ chicken wings with Asian-style 'slaw. When no coleslaw came out with the plate, I asked the server "I think this is meant to come with some kind of coleslaw, is that coming separately?" To which she shrugged and said she thinks it's run out. I asked her if there's anything in it's place since I did pay for the whole dish. Another shrug, a look of "nothing I can do, and it's not my problem", a strained sorry..... escapes her lips and then she's already walking away quick as she can, as I started to ask another question. Wow. Left a bad taste in my mouth despite the food being decent. If the staff are gonna be servers, please train them to deal with customers properly.

The chicken and avocado salad contained little avocado and a lot of sun-dried tomatoes, which weren't in the description and weren't wanted.
The six prawns tasted fine, but they came with nothing but a bit of bread.
We didn't order alcohol, just a soft drink each, and somehow this came to over £31. If it weren't for the cheescake and decent service, I'd be tempted to give this 2 stars.

Marchmont Street is just round the corner from Russell Square tube and a short walk to Kings X so a good venue to meet if you live in opposite directions. You can drink on the street out front and, although well frequented, never seems to be too busy. Staff are friendly enough and service is pretty quick.

Outdoor area has heaters though but when it's as cold as it was this day they only fry your head. Clean toilets always a plus and has a Dyson airblade. Had a date here that went well, and then went horrendously wrong..
D. P.This pub is well situated near Russell Square Tube and The Brunswick Centre, it has nice beers and ciders on tap and does nice food. I have been here a few times and it is always busy, so it can be hard to find somewhere to sit, there is an upstairs too with seating and a bar.
It is a good pub and a good location, I just wouldn't go out of my way to visit it, but if I was in the area and needed a drink, I'd go.

Prices are maybe too high, but that's just my opinion.

A. R.A very nice pub in a great location, which proved very busy on a Thursday evening. We tried our luck upstairs in the elegant dining room, where it was significantly quieter, and were lucky to grab an unreserved table (albeit getting some snooty looks from some card-players when I politely inquired as to whether the glasses of beer on our table were theirs). The team member we spoke to, to ask about tables / reservations was rather surly and disinterested; we had to probe a little to get our query across and get a clear response. Next, upon ordering a bottle of Picpoul de Pinet, we were told by another staff member that they only had half a bottle left. I was disappointed, but asked whether it would be enough for two medium size glasses? The response was "I don't know", so I asked "well, perhaps I could see the bottle and we can make a guess?" The bottle was duly produced and I could see there was enough for two glasses, however just before they were poured I asked were they sure there were no more bottles downstairs? Again, the response "I don't know". I didn't feel rudeness, just lack of training and common sense. Upon my prompting, and their phoning down, sure enough it wasn't out of stock after all, and a full bottle was sent up in a couple of minutes. It was silly, and would have worked out more expensive for us had we started off with two single glasses. Never mind, we enjoyed the wine, albeit without being offered a cooler.
I selected fish and chips from the menu, which was perhaps a little underwhelming. Fish was fine, a smaller portion than usual for pub food, the batter was OK but not as good as it could have been, and the mushy peas straight out of a tin. It is quick, cheap, and easy to make fresh mushy peas! More disappointing was that the chips were not the triple-cooked variants stated on the menu; they were perfectly edible but not even particularly good normal chips. This is such a common occurrence in pubs and restaurants these days; being charged for dishes which are not the same (and usually inferior / lacking something) as the descriptions - absolutely not acceptable.
The risotto tasted delicious but was lukewarm, and in parts too undercooked. I know the trend seems to be for risotto to be al-dente, but very often it goes too far this way, as was the case here.
Chocolate brownie for dessert apparently very nice, and I did note the person who served our wine making an effort to check up on us regularly, so seemed to care about service, which was nice (and earned a tip from us when we paid at the bar later, despite the aforementioned issues).
All in all, we quite enjoyed the evening, and given I note someone from the pub has already seen my rating and had the decency to write a polite note, I would be happy to try again sometime and see if the quality is a little better.
