Reviews of The Peasant
M. R.
A very nice cosy little pub. Well known for it's Sunday roast (which is most excellent). Good selection of beers and ales on tap, friendly staff that are very welcoming which overall creates a lovely atmosphere. Overall a great place to visit for either a pint after work, dinner or a Sunday roast dinner.
R. M.
Shane and I were looking for lunch, and the menu outside suggested a good array of classy dishes no dearer than some other nearby pubs.
Light streamed through the big windows creating a welcoming ambiance, and we got menus from the friendly waitress as soon as we sat down. She scored extra points from me by turning down the loud nondescript music without hesitation when asked.
I chose pork belly with mash and greens from the main courses, and Shane went for the bangers and mash. We weren't in a heavy drinking mood so I can't comment on their range of beers and wines.
All the dishes were expertly cooked and presented, and my dish only £15, including veg.
The desserts looked great, but we were were too full, so I had just an excellent double espresso.
I must come back often( although I didn't ask if the evening menu is more pricey)

Decided to have Sunday Lunch at this local pub earlier today. Have to say we were not disappointed in the slightest. The staff are lovely, non intrusive and efficient. We were seated at a very comfortable table, everything flowed smoothly from there. The pub is large, quirky but traditional.
The food is amazing, hats off to the chef, everything is a British Sunday lunch but with French influences and generosity. We had Calamari and deep-fried goats cheese to start both divine, the latter was almost a meal in itself , if we had known how substantial the mains are we would have given them a miss-note for next time.
We then had the chicken and slow roasted belly pork(divine), with all the trimmings, everything seasoned to perfection, the cheesiest cauliflower, sweet braised red cabbage, enormous yorkshires, broccoli and orange and thyme roasted carrots, lashings of onion gravy and roasties capped it all off..Couldn't even look at desserts but if they are anything like the rest, they are special I am sure.Give this place a go? its is worth every penny..

This place came recommended to me for a great Sunday roast so maybe my expectations were a bit high. The potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, gravy and red cabbage were good, the other vegetables unfortunately undercooked and we tried the beef and the pork roasts: the beef was average (I didn't want to finish it) and the pork so extremely fatty I couldn't eat it - but my partner ate whatever meat could be found among the fat and said it was alright.
The fish and chips on the next table looked incredible though, so maybe we were a bit unlucky.

Wandered in on a Sunday afternoon and were lucky enough to have a table available! Ordered the pork belly and chicken roasts plus some mulled wine and boy oh boy was it delicious. The roasts arrived in about 5 minutes, and were definitely some of the best roasts we've ever had. Everything cooked to perfection, fresh and beautifully presented. Perfect sized portions and well priced. The staff were super efficient and quick, as well as friendly. Had the orange floorless cake for dessert which I found a little too bitter for my tastes and the clotted cream too thick, but still enjoyable overall. Would definitely recommend for a Sunday roast!

Cracking old London pub with very up-to-date food and reasonable selection of beer. Recently opening up again after Covid shut down. We'll worth a visit!
L. C.
very good midweek pub grab, in a super friendly place. sausage and mash was fab, pork belly good (as was the sharing meze starter). portions are very generous, so we had no appetite left to try desserts. long list of wines, draft and bottle beers, and a few ciders too.
J. C.
A lovely surprise, one of the best pub roasts, but the real highlight were the tasty carefully put together starters and probably the best creme brûlée ever! We had one roast pork that needed returning to the kitchen but the staff were quick and polite and happy to help, which was much appreciated. All in all, the experience was excellent.
F. K.
Fantastic pub, could not rate highly enough! I held my wedding reception there and I could not have asked for a better venue. The food was exceptional, the staff were so helpful, the service was impeccable. Every single one of my guests remarked on how wonderful the pub was. Nick - the manager - was very well organised and gave us a huge amount of support in picking the menu/drinks, working with the florist to get the rooms decorated, and generally just did such a great job we didn't have any kind of stress. Thank you all so much for giving us such a wonderful day!
We've been to The Peasant on a few other occasions for food and drinks, and it's always been brilliant. Excellent food (way better than 'pub grub') and super friendly staff in an atmospheric old city pub - just brilliant!
C. F.
Great pub, has the benefit of being literally next door to the office. This is our usual destination for an after-work drink and chinwag.
As an ale drinker I especially appreciate the selection of those, and particularly the well-stocked variety of Belgian/trappist ales in the fridge.
Plenty of space inside and out, and they serve a reasonable variety of typical trendy bar food/snacks such as chips, burgers and meze platters. What really impresses me is that they have remained consistently good over several years.
I'm also aware that you can book the whole venue for special occasions if you'd like, and they also have an upstairs function room (I've not been up there myself but I've seen other parties go there).
M. S.
Good pint, not the bad service. But I am sorry for cold dry turkey with uncooked veg and watery gravy 23 pounds it's insult almost slap on a face. Want my money back
D. O.
Had lunch there today and would heartily recommend it. The service and food quality was amazing. Even though we arrived at the end of service they very kindly accommodated us as walk ups. Brilliant value and a great choice of beers too. Totally recommend

I’ve been past this pub so many times over the years. It looks so inviting and today I made it in for Sunday lunch. It was just as good looking on the inside (circus themed prints all over the walls) and the best roast meals I’ve had in years. Plentiful portions, my beef was rare and tender and my companion had a large piece of belly pork which was also delicious. Giant Yorkshire puddings and a good selection of vegetables and roasties too. The puddings were equally tasty. The staff were also lovely, just the right amount of attention and very friendly.
T. J.
This unassuming pub in the heart of Clerkenwell serves up a great Sunday roast.
B. V.
Generously served, really tasty and quality traditional UK food.
I had roasted chicken which was amazing.
I really recommend!
R. C.
We turned up for food and drinks at 8pm on a Sunday and had a really good roast beef with all the trimmings, with some really nice beers, and followed by delicious desserts. Really friendly staff, thank you.
l. s.
An absolute treasure! May long it reign as one of the best gastronomic pubs in London!
Staff are pretty awesome also .
F. D.
Lovely meal steak really good although go for larger steak if having one. Bacon and chedder mash roast vegetables lovely😊
K. W.
The most delicious Sunday lunch! The staff are super friendly! We keep returning
d. d.
Fantastic place. We had our wedding here recently and Nick the landlord took us through everything and was so helpful. He really made the day so hassle free and the food was incredible.
S. D.
Lovely wedding breakfast. Staff really on the ball. Good food, one of the original gastropubs, still on the ball!
C. J.
Wow what a roast dinner!! Really like this place - great boozer!!
S. H.
Really really nice food except for the Yorkshire puddings were a little greasy.
M. W.
The roast dinner was absolutely amazing. The best we've had in London so far, we'll be coming back and definitely recommend.
A. R.
Fantastic wedding venue, five star food and service from the team! Thank you so much for making the whole process so straight forward and manageable! Honestly no complaints - Alison and Will (married 26th November 2016)
T. T.
Lovely barman but had the place to ourselves at 3.30pm. Will definitely return to check out the restaurant.
J. Z. G.
Traditional English bar, with Pretty good food and wine at really reasonable price! I finished entire pork belly.
A. S.
Lovely, unassuming pub. Amazing food with nice range of beers
J. C.
What an amazing place. My cousin has his wedding party here on the 9th Feb. They served an amazing three course meal the food was divine and they hosted a great party for all of us to enjoy.
G. V.
Great pub and attentive staff. We had a good meal with excellent appetizers and mains. However we did not enjoy our desserts. But, overall, recommended!
A. S.
Old fashioned pub. Cheapest prices in the area. Good beer.
P. L.
Went for a Sunday roast. Waited for almost an hour but it was worth it. The roast was nice and tasty. Good meat and Yorkshire pudding. The staff is very friendly. They allow dogs and kids inside. My dog thinks food was okay but he didn't like to wait so long.
J. J.
Excellent gastropub. Great ever-changing menu don’t be dissuaded by the decor. This place is converted a friend from being a vegetarian just by the chicken wings 😂
m. s.
Excellent food and excellent staff. Great place. Also fabulous beers. I am coming back.
J. C.
The Peasant is a great find for us. 9 months ago we came and had a meal downstairs and it was OK. By chance we came again a few weeks ago. They were very busy but we were told they had a dining space upstairs. This is a gem... A fabulous waitress service and wonderful food. The ambience is so nice and mellow. Kinda brings you back to the 20s... Definitely recommended but for the upstairs dining room... ❤️💋
A. T.
My husband & I had our wedding reception at the Peasant at the start of the year and had an absolutely flawless experience. Even though we organized everything remotely via email the planning was simple and painless. Nick and his team were a pleasure to work with and both the planning and execution of the day were so smooth due to their experience and hard work. The food in particular was amazing - they offer a choice of 3 options for each course, even for large groups of 50+, and both the food and the service was spot-on. What an unforgettable day - thank-you Nick & team!!
L. S.
The food here is always amazing. The Sunday roasts here is to die for! Staff are very helpful. I called to ask if they had gluten free options for Sunday roast and they had someone call me back straight away to let me know they can cater for.
On the day the staff so nice, friendly and welcoming.
It always is a happy crowd of people in the bar as well.
C. S.
Very nice pub lovely Sunday roast
L. M.
Very good quality for the price.
L. D.
Came for the football.
Great friendly staff.
Roast dinner was delicious.
Drinks went down a plenty. What's not to love
J. T.
Two of us had a lovely lunch on Sunday, we did phone ahead but there were plenty of spare tables. We both had the roast pork which was lovely. In fact everything about the meal was lovely and I could have eaten it again. I certainly didn't think there was too much food on the plate, just the right amount. Staff were very friendly and we are definitely returning.
R. L.
There is a restaurant upstairs. It's not x2 chefs trying to turn over a posh menu. Or maybe they lied to me. Either way the food was excellent and the beer menu was extensive and enjoyable. Tuesday night was busy enough not to be dead but loud enough so you didn't feel like you'd gone to the wrong place. No idea what it's like on a Thursday and Friday but if give it a good old college try. Top marks, but they don't do burgers or wings.
C. O.
Beautiful building excellent food at very reasonable prices, very friendly staff, i shall definitely be returning, great place to relax with friends
S. A.
The Peasant has to be our family favourite pub for delicious Sunday lunch. We have had several meals here.....food served well consistently, lovely staff, great artwork and all round local neighbourhood pub. Everyone eating here , sit content and as if all their wishes have come true! Best belly pork , beating Michelin star quality. ...and I have had such pork. My son cannot wait for the next treat. .he knows that the roast chicken is his next dinner followed by warming sticky toffee pudding. Yum! It shouldn't be a secret but we have kept it so from our foodie family and friends. ..now the secret is out!
M. P.
We had our wedding at The Peasant back in September and can’t thank and praise Nick and the staff there enough. The day itself ran like clockwork, the pub looked amazing and the food was absolutely incredible - one of the best meals you’ll ever have in London. From start to finish, the planning and thought put into helping us out - particularly by Nick - was top notch. Highly recommend for weddings and other fun!
R. H.
My wife and I chose to have our wedding reception at the Peasant and it was a fantastic choice. Nick and all the staff could not have done more to make the build-up and the day itself run smoothly. All our guests commented on the quality of the food and the fact that they had a choice of meal options on the day. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone considering having their wedding reception here, but if not, it's also a great pub just to have a drink and a quality bite to eat.
E. O.
Delicious roasts and great service. Lovely pub to visit with very reasonable prices. Had the chocolate torte for dessert which was gigantic - could've definitely shared it!
Will definitely be back again.
Á. L.
Tasty and generous Sunday roast
T.
We had our wedding reception at The Peasant at the end of June. From start to finish dealing with Nick and his team was a pleasure. We had complete confidence that everything was under control which meant we could relax and enjoy our special day. The venue is a traditional London pub with lots of character and having the place to ourselves was wonderful - they have a great template there for the day which meant everything ran like clockwork. The staff were attentive and friendly and Nick’s food and drinks suggestions spot on. Feedback from guests about the menu was that it was fantastic - particularly having so much choice and all of the dishes were delicious. Lee, the DJ who was recommended to us was great and really got the party started - we will never forget the conga through the bar at the end of the night! The only downside is that the day went by so quickly and we wish we could do it all again. Thank you The Peasant!
J. T.
Went here on a Sunday, pretty quiet area around the pub but lovely inside the pub. Served by a new waitress who was very good. Interesting photos of poets and actors around the walls. A bit pricey but expected for the area. Recommended.
D.
OMG. Had forgotten just how good this food was. We had the most amazing roast dinners, with really great and warm service, and quite simply the best apple crumble I've had in a long long long long time. We can't wait to go back - just looking for an excuse!
M. W.
Great atmosphere, good beer selection and delicious food.
We had a lovely evening and The Peasant staff were very generous with our expanding group from booking to the end of our evening.
R. T.
Very tasty food, their Sunday roasts are fabulous. Great choice and good service, along with a substantial bar menu. Great for functions and celebrations.
C. D.
Really really love this place. Beautiful pub, the roasts are SO GOOD and absolutely massive portions so it is great value. The staff are always lovely and super helpful. One of our favourite pubs and Sunday roasts in London
D. P.
I enjoyed a fantastic Sunday roast here yesterday. The food was excellent and the staff were very attentive and friendly. A mate has just moved into the neighbourhood so I’ll definitely be frequenting this place more often!
S. H.
Went here for a Sunday roast. Not too crowded and didn't need to book. It was a bit awkward and slow ordering but the food came nice and quickly. Amazing Yorkshire puddings and great roast potatoes. However the serving was so generous it ruined the showtime. I was worried about wasting food and had to leave half the pork and felt over full. Shame to serve more food than people can eat and have so much waste!
A. K.
We had our wedding at The Peasant last year - such a lovely dining room upstairs and love the pub atmosphere downstairs. Nick and his staff were so amazing - they really looked after our guests and the food was just delicious. Highly recommended!
E. W.
The best sunday roast I have ever tasted! Great friendly staff x
M. M.
Super lovely local pub with amazingly friendly and fuss free service. The roasts are delicious and all food is tasty and freshly prepared. Amazing how quickly the food comes out. Went with large group of friends around Christmas. Really lovely quintisenntial modern British gastropub
L. W.
Excellent food and really nice staff
C. C.
Brilliant place for a Sunday roast with good company. The pub appears very busy on Sundays so definitely call ahead to make a reservation. Portions were hearty and reasonably priced, though the beef roast was a bit overcooked. Would come back again nonetheless.
C. S.
Brilliant Sunday roast, extensive menu on offer for those who don’t want the roast dinner two.
Somehow managed a full three courses and totally stuffed, great portions, really decent prices and attentive service.
K. W.
Lively pub with a great restaurant above. We paid £20 a head for two courses and were very happy think I had a duck breast confit and crispy pig cheeks). Will be back to try the desserts.
L. G.
Just walked past it five years to the day that we had our party there – was great to see that The Peasant is still popular for wedding receptions/functions. I'm sure Nick and his staff will be doing everything to make the party that's going on today as good as ours was. Friendly staff, great food and service all contributed to us having a wonderful day – I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
P. N.
Was there for a wedding. Great food and really nice staff. The venue is beautiful. It's a classic and therfore it's a no brainer if you want to be in contact with real English way of life. Not expensive.
Ground floor: typical English pub with typical clients. Upstairs, the restaurant.
B.
The Peasant is most pleasant. Good food, friendly and helpful staff, well priced for London. More than happy to return in the future if passing, of course I'll be back :)
E. C.
I went to the present for a wedding reception, Nice little pub with a lovely function Room.
D. S.
Excellent Sunday roast, particularly the pork was first rate. The normal menu is very good as well. It’s a local for us, we keep coming back again and again.
D. E.
Nice old Pub about 10 minutos stroll from Sadler's Wells. Excellent food, reasonably priced. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Good alternative to similar establishments closer to Sadler's Wells, which are often booked out prior to performances.
O. E.
Have been here a couple of times now for the Sunday roast - definitely one of the top places in Clerkenwell. Great food, great value for money and lovely staff as well. Thank you !
J. O.
Food was delicious and well presented. Friendly happy staff.
T. W.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place. This will noe be my Go-To Local!!!! Exactly what I needed. Tasted like Farm-to-Table food as I've had in the States. Great customer service. Charming pub vibe, but how you'd like it: not grimey or old man pub. It had all the right elements a person needs!
B. M.
Had one of the best roast beef here. Tender perfectly cooked beef with lots and lots of gravy. And the Bloody Mary cured my hungover instantly. If you are on the area in a Sunday don’t give this one a miss!
M. O.
Good food and friendly staff team!
O. E.
We used the Peasant as our wedding venue. It was perfect. Nick was fantastic to deal with and the food was outstanding. We've also been there several other times and it's always been exceptional.
L. B.
Nice friendly pub, good beer too
P. C.
Only been here at lunchtime. Usually pretty empty. Food is decent, but the place has no soul - at least at lunchtime it doesn't.
C. K.
The Peasant is a lovely pub/bar tastefully done out with good ales and an excellent wine list. Bar food is a cut above the norm. Good for venue hire.
S. S.
Great pub/restaurant offering Sunday roasted plates. Friendly staff, spacy tables, cosy atmosphere. Food is good and prices reasonable, highly recommended.
N. D.
Their beer is well kept, there's a friendly atmosphere, and the food is good. It's not over loud either, making it an excellent place to catch up with a friend on a weekday evening.
P. P.
Had our wedding reception at The Peasant. The venue is lovely, the beer selection great, the food outstanding and the landlord, Nick is one of the nicest people you'll find in London town.
F. N.
Really good Sunday roast both in terms of food quality/ taste and quantity. The service is also really nice.
S. L.
Nice Sunday lunch...traditional pub downstairs with dining and dining room with a couple of large tables upstairs. Attentive staff...ran out of several desserts on the Sunday I went which was a let down especially as it was only 3pm.
M. M.
Decent pub, good drinks and good service. Can usually always find a spot to have a drink. Food is also good and menu has a decent variety of options.
J. A.
Visited for work Christmas meal. Good food and a reasonable selection of beers. Staff were a bit blunt but generally service was fine.
A. M.
Nice pub, especially for the restaurant at the first floor, great atmosphere and tasty food. You can also book the whole pub for a night if you need a venue to celebrate company or personal events.
E. F.
Awesome gastropub on two levels. They have a satisfying range of ales and lots to munch on at lunch time. The atmosphere is pretty neat but not as homey as I would like it.
S. E.
Good pub food with a sprinkling of unusual menu items as well. Book a table upstairs if you want something quieter (but you can still ask for the bar menu which has a few more vegetarian options)
G. R.
Great service, relaxing decor in bar area, excellent food, large portions, reasonably priced for location. Would definitely recommend Sunday roast
A. M.

(Translated) Nice atmosphere, good choice of beers and quite decent food for the UK, still quite expensive ... for 1 bistro but we are in London. Be careful, noisy and you may have to share your table with strangers, different styles of tables => classic round and rectangular tables but also lounge style coffee tables and high bar counters. Friendly welcome and good varied music.
