Reviews of The Red Lion, Mayfair
D. T.
A fine den for drinking! For the name, blame King James. Described in the advertising as "a perfect example of a late Victorian gin palace" true, engraved glass and all. This place is brilliant, Sherlock will solve the most villainous plots in this pub. A fine place for a drink any day.
R. M.
Nice pub. It got quite busy on a Saturday afternoon with folks spilling on the pavement and road in front drinking their pints. It has a very cosy bar area inside and friendly staff. I had Fullers Pride and Seafarers English ale here. The WC was down some steep stairs so keep that in mind if you have issues with mobility. It is pricy for a pint but in line for the area. I would recommend a drop in if you're in the area.
T. S.
One of my favourite London Pubs! Just as it was when I first used it in 1981. A traditional London Pub unadorned and unadulterated by unnecessary music or gimmickry. A beautiful former Gin House serving a good quality range of beers and with good Pub Grub too.
Perfect.
P. B.
Very busy pub near piccadilly circus, service was good and the London Pride bitter was excellent and served in very good condition
I always try to get here when I come to London.
D. S.
Perfect pub, even better staff! Marissa is the best! I've told all my other pubs that I won't be back, one visit here is enough. Great glass and decor too!
J.
Beautiful, proper tiny pub. Friendly staff and patrons. Be prepared to end up chatting with someone nearby -- you'll be nearly in their lap anyway -- but go with the flow and you won't be disappointed. Not to be missed.
C. D.
Great pub! small, but cozy. Andrea was able to get me, my wife and my daughter a table so we could enjoy fine food and ales. Definitely worth visiting.
P. D.
Charming tiny, unspoilt hideaway with an excellent pint of Hophead and friendly staff. Beware: The stairs for toilets are v.difficult for those not good on their feet.
c. f.
Great little pub in London with great, friendly service behind the bar (especially service from Jack)! Will definitely be coming back asap.
H. J.
Small gem in the rough! "A MOST BEAUTIFUL" English pub! If I could have this in my neighborhood it would be this one. History in this pub has to be amazing. Drop in for a 1/2 pint and gone again. BUT, if I get in the neighborhood again I will at least stop for a pint.
My apologies my pictures are a little fuzzy but I still want to post and say thank you "Red Lion" for a great London experiences
H. a. B. R.
Beautiful friendly pub..would have had the full five stars if the kitchen was open!
P. M.
Excellent pub due to Marisa and her excellent staff!
Great location, great service..I will be back.
Paul.
S. K.
Nothing not to like about this classic London pub. Beautiful classic Victorian decor, excellent selection of gin (didn't try the beers) and tonics. Excellent service with a welcoming smile and 'can do' attitude. No covid hysteria either. We'll be back!!
C. C.
Proper pub in a sea of terrible contral London chain and gimmicky pubs. Order one drink and you'll feel like a local forever
J. R.
Great pint of London Pride in a beautiful traditional bar with very courteous Spanish bar manager. Thanks.
S. B.
Absolutely classic old st james pub....beer is well kept and great service
M. G.
Classic London pub. Good service and great beer.
J. R.
Good atmosphere but the best are the staff
b. b.
City pub..small, bit of outside seating. Peroni £6.40 a pint..loos not great
H. C.
Love this jewel just off Jermyn Street. Classic decor, great selection of drinks. And Marisa the manager and her staff always treat you like a long lost friend!
T. B.
Nice proper pub. Closes at 10 pm
M. W.
I’m a big fan of this smallish Fullers pub. It’s near the office and a great local to have. The last few times we’ve been the staff have been amazing, friendly and helpful. The pub itself is very attractive with lots of engraved glass / mirrors on the walls. The seating is limited particularly at busy times but there is some space to stand outside. There is a good range of fillers beers, and the bitter is normally very well looked after. The food is typical for the chain but pretty good. well worth a visit if you are in the are.
p. r.
Nice beers and lovely old school pub feel.
S. B.
The Steak and London Pride Pie was marvelous, especially the gravy. The atmosphere is true London, dark wood and beveled glass everywhere. All for the Hugo Spritzer.
G. H.
A great drinking place off Jermyn St terrific choice, delightful staff
C.
Lovely friendly pub with well kept beer & great toasties selection
S. K.
One of my favourite pubs. Small with a victorian interior and best of all its a Fullers pub so the beer is bang on.
D. T.
A great little traditional pub, with an emphasis on little. Not the widest variety of beers on tap, but a decent range. Staff are always nice, and there's a smooth efficiency to the way they deal with both sides of the bar. Great decor (again, very traditional). If you are in the Jermyn Street area and looking for somewhere to have a drink this is a good spot. Usually difficult to get anywhere to sit, but that doesn't stop me from coming here regularly.
D. B.
Good traditional pub for a drink and quick bite! The interior is delicate and classy, part of your bill is definitely paying for the view. They have lots of selection of handcrafted pies and beer (no cocktails), would recommend for a visit!
M. W.
Lovely little pub with friendly service.
A. F.
It small pub came highly recommended and rightly so! The custom made mirrors are a real work of art. We had toasties as the chef was off sick. Mouth watering delicious! Very friendly staff. A definate Go Back Again place :)))
J. C.
Top place, been using this pub since 1981.
D. L.
Small traditional pub. Quiet street, off busy London. Well worth a visit
B. D.
Good beer, great service, Good company's that I need for a good evening in the pub.
S. P.
Nice place for a drink and to rest during shopping
T. N.
A nice small bar with plenty of options on tap
J. J. S.
Beautiful looking pub beer not so good
T. K.
Good classic London pub, OK selection of beers. Nothing special but also not just Carling and Fosters. Great layout, really gives you the "city" feel for such a centrally located pub. Staff were pleasant and patrons were accomodating.
K. C.
Good place to catch craft ales and stouts. Though, if you're looking for somewhere to sit down and have a chat with friends, this wouldn't be the best place. The staff are friendly and the interior is absolutely beautiful. The clientele are mainly businessmen on a break from work or after they've finished - so bear this in mind. They also do delicious toasties, among the generic burgers and fish and chips.
l. d.
A nice old fashioned pub to go to still with the original decor in place which is hard to find these days. Also a fullers pub who retain these pubs in there original condition, if you're a tourist or someone in London who hasn't been before it's a place worth visiting also great selection of lagers and keg beers and friendly staff
m.
Expensive pints but nice atmosphere
S. W.
Great little proper drinking pub .
L. M.
Lovely authentic old bar great staff
a. m.
Beautiful old English bar. Great beers and good conversation nice upstiats.
D. H.
A very average pub. The beer choice is limited to a few lagers and a few hand pumped ales including London pride but this is sufficient. The establishment itself is quite small, but attracts a fairly busy crowd on a Saturday evening.
K. M.
Characterful decor but very small. Really a pub where one has to prop up the bar. I found it difficult to find a table which could accommodate three for lunch in reasonable comfort. So we went elsewhere even though they do food. Would I patronise again ? Yes : but only for a 'swift half'.
P. C.
Wonderful Victorian interior, with copious etched glass. A traditional Fuller's pub, with friendly staff who do their jobs well. They have a small selection of traditional pub food, which is good quality.
S.
Nice old looking pub, only had a beer and few simple drinks. Staff was very friendly and nice, toilets were better than expected for a pub. Prices are quite high but considering the place it's to be expected
D. C.
Great pub for a straightforward weekday drink. Small and cosy inside, can be hard to get a seat, but often more room at the back. Quick service, unpretentious pub grub. Ok to drink on the pavement outside. There aren't many good honest pubs like this in this area, so make the most of this one! If meeting people, take care not to confuse it with the other Red Lion, about 10 minutes away in Crown Passage!
M. T.
A small and really cozy rub. Beautiful interior and good selection of beers. Hard to get a set, but well worth a visit. The prices are quite alright for London standards.
G. B.
No. my details are private. I'll let my photo speak.
L. M.
Went here for a after works drink before dinner and it was very warm and cosy. Ending up staying longer than we anticipated due to the lovely atmosphere. It does well as a classic old English Pub and would definitely recommend it.
J. S.
Friendly staff in a classic English pub.
D. N.
A very traditional pub with friendly staff. Away from the crowded surrounding areas, this small pub has a cozy environment. Great for a pint as well as having something from the kitchen.
C. A.
Friendly welcome here - thanks Marissa - in this small but historic pub.
L. H.
It's become a firm favourite of mine amongst London pubs. Tucked away so it dosnt get many tourists and the Suits tend to leave after a few pints.Great beer and excellent service.
P. K.
Small, but perfectly formed! Even if you don't want a drink or a meal, it's worth poking your nose in for a look at the polished brass and cut-glass mirrors. I only ate lunch here once: the baguette took a long time to arrive, had little filing, and the bread wasn't fully baked. So I recommend not staying for a meal.
j. c.
Excellent steak pie and mash potatoes and even heathy veggies.
P. G.
One of my top ten pubs on earth and they are all in the British Isles. Charming land lady a credit to Fullers. Staff friendly and polite. Best pub in St. James. Its that good it's a wonder someone hasn't knocked it down. We have lost too many good pubs due to badly run pub co's and cretinous developers and hopeless/corrupt councillors.
X. Z.
Great little pub with traditional interior. Very relaxing to have a beer after hours of walking around. Friendly staff gave me a taste of the tap.
J. G.
This pub has a wonderful interior, it's quite small but one of the best and should be top on the list to visit in the area.
It's tucked away but very conveniently located for going on or finishing the day.
They do food during the day.
E. L.
What a nice little pub. Amazing period features with the carved glasses, great selection of draught beers. A great option if you have to meet someone in the Piccadilly area
L. M.
A lovely place to stop for a quiet drink
S. W.
Enjoyed my visit to the pub while on holiday in London. Was visiting GFT next door and then decided to have a few pints and snacks. The sausage bits were to die for.
D. S. P.
Old gin palace by the looks of it. Fast friendly service considering the time of day 17:00hrs. Cut and etched glass in the front and rear bar. Ceilings are of moulded plaster which can go unnoticed. The rear bar is wall to wall with arched glass panels and is a must pub to visit when in the area. A real mixture of suits and tourists in here.
M. S.
Great pub, often full of market traders from Piccadilly Market at nearby St James's Church Piccadilly, rubbing shoulders with posh Jermyn Street gents and bemused American tourists. Good fun, cheerful barstaff & well kept beer.
L. H.
Great little pub featuring Fuller’s ales. Stopped in for a couple of pints of ESB and some nibbles. Friendly staff and great service.
S. G. M.
The Red Lion, Mayfair. Well I never. Looks like a traditional pub, feels like s traditional pub, beer good, service fine, TV at low volume, a stone's throw from Germain Street. I will be returning.
J. H.
Small but rather beautiful Victorian pub in St. James's, just off Jermyn Street, with etched glass mirrors and an island bar. The downside is it's almost always been packed whenever I've been there - and inevitably you end up with people constantly jostling past wherever you stand. It's a Fuller's pub, so expect the usual range of beers. Closed at the weekend, which is always a bit of a shame as I often shop on Jermyn Street on a Saturday, and this would make a great spot for a quick post-shopping pint!
C. P.
Great pub, decent beer selection and a grand place to have a pint.
G. W.
Immensely likeable townie pub-as-most-used-to-be. Here it is often essential to be able to deploy your elbows in a firm but considerate manner. You will also benefit from an ability to place your glass on the narrowest and most unstable looking of perches.
Warnings: vertiginous steps down to the khazi.
R. F.
Always enjoyablesmall and can get very busy, so timing can be important! Lovely glass panelling! Staff were friendly and attentive when we visited last week.
P. M.
Genuine Pub with decent ale selection. Gets busy so be prepared to stand while drinking your beer (or wine but NOT coffee - they don't do hot drinks).
J. H.
Lovely old pub. Full of cut glass mirrors and character. Whenever I'm in the area I just have to pop in for a very well kept pint of London Pride.
J. G.
Lovely pub with great history one of the locals told us it's story. Very small but very lovely and friendly staff.
J. T.
Very lovely pub with a buzzing atmosphere, however it is very small and so is not ideal for even small grounds, and you will have to stand with your drink on the side as there's not really much in the way of seating.
h. I.
Wonderful pub.
M. S.
Pretty nice pub with an impressive interior and good beer. On the small side though and the space for standing outside is also restricted.
S. A. G.
I really like this pub, the staffs was very friendly. I good place to go after a work day and have a happy hour.
G. P.
What can you say. Good beer nice ambiance. Hard to go wrong in any pub in London
S. R. T.
Good pub, try the pie of the day, mash and veg, excellent, found all food good, nice selection of beer. Always visit if I can when in London.
G. J.
Definitely old school! As seems to be typical of many places in Britain, the kitchen closed at 4 PM! We were starving, but the barkeep offered up a nearby place we'll try next.
D. T.
One of the classic London pubs, best to find a quiet time to visit as it gets really busy at peak times
P. W.
Stopped for a quick sharpener and stayed for several!! Great atmosphere, busy, lively London pub.
b.
Great pub.Shame Fullers sold their historic brewery..now they have to buy their own beer!
Surely the website should be RedLion St.James Not Mayfair!
A. H.
Proper pub, although a bit small; great beers and nice service; but over £2 for pork scratchings - really?!
S. M.
Good beer, very small though, fine in the summer but not great in winter. Staff are fine but nothing that exciting about the place
S. N.
Tiny pub, very ornate, lots of beautiful engraved glass. Good prices for London.
N. H.
Victorian style pub with central bar and etched glass. Gets quite crowded so can be lucky to get a table, but a good pub.
P. S.
Good pub experience.
N. H.
Small but full of character with friendly staff serving tasty food. In Good Beer Guide for obvious reason!
B. G.
Tiny but great little pub - first ever Red Lion (the most popular pub name in the UK) - pubs had easily identifable names (Kings Head, Red Lion) so that illiterate people could get drunk too!
M. N.
Lovely and friendly staff. Great traditional old English pub which is rare to find in London
R. G.
Friendly staff although they tried to overcharge me for drinks maybe by mistake? Gins expensive and not much seating.
S. E.
Just great for a casual drink. Staff is attentive and recognise you when you are back. Go after work, nice place
A. A.
