Reviews of The Shakespeare
E. R.
The barmen were friendly. Happy hour cocktails (5-7pm) are valid when ordering the same drink.
The food menu was quite limited but from the options available, we chose tortellini and a beef burger - both were delicious.
Toilet facilities could be better.
M.
Lovely place beer 🍻🥂 good very friendly staff 🍷 star ✨ rating for them as they deserve it clean comfortable x
B. D.
Really friendly staff. Looks nice inside, they've renovated and it has a good vibe, nice lighting. Holding a comedy club downstairs Tues to Sat, the bar man came out to invite us. Would visit again definitely...
T. O.
Went to a wonderful comedy show here. Was a really lovely night. Highly recommend. Even the cringe moments were worth it.
G. C.
Great pub, good vibe. V helpful staff who can make a good cocktail - especially the Belgian lad (Gary?). The pub cat is a nice chap too.
A.
Nice pub for a relaxing evening after a hectic week. Good drinks, relaxing atmosphere and a chilled ambience. Pizza isn't bad either.
D. R.
The best Guinness I have ever had. The waiter is so nice and funny. The service is quick and their Irish beef burger is immaculate.
m. e.
It seems to be a decent enough pub but we went the first day after November lockdown, 2nd December 2020, called beforehand to check they were open and told yes but you have to have a substantial meal, we arrived and asked for the menu to be told there was a choice of 2 different soups, this is NOT A SUBSTANTIAL MEAL, the staff were friendly, but £33+ for 4 pints and 2 bowls of soup which were nice is pretty expensive and not what we expected.
R. H.
Toilets leave a lot to be desired. Hand dryer = tee shirt. Prices were reasonable.
N. F.
We went for the Tuesday comedy night and had an amazing time, its a very intimate setting and we got to hear a lot of different comedians, you felt a part of the group honestly as it was very conversational and they included the audience but didn't embarrass us or anything.
It was a great night and the bar staff were lovely to talk to aswell
N. C.
So good that we made it our local. Great atmosphere, amazing pizzas and a secret basement bar.
Dog friendly too 🐶
M. S.
Enjoyed visiting. Welcoming, friendly atmosphere. Lovely place to have a pint.
K. R.
Has been taken over by new landlord who has been trying hard to turn the place around. They do really great pizzas, try the fries pizza dough if they have it. Oscar is really friendly and always tries to make your experience a good one. Decent boozer if you are in the area
A. 2.
Had a great evening for the Scotland - England game. May not have been the case if it hadn't been for the owner who quickly came to the rescue folkowing the behaviour of the Italian manager who was completely unhelpful, arrogant and rude.
For context, we booked a table for 6 people ahead of the game only to be told we weren't on the record despite having the booking confirmation. This happened to another 2 groups who we spoke to as well. The manager mentioned above done nothing to rectify the situation and quite frankly dismissed us as if we were children.
The owner quickly came to the rescue, and simply offered us another table. An easy fix made so much more difficult by someone with a clear power trip issue.
Cheers to the Owner and rest of the staff who were brilliant on the night.
L. S.
Nice pub, close to Barbican Station, good staff.
J. S.
Good food, beer ran out? but comedy night was a laugh 😃
D. A.
Stayed open till late, friendly staff. Have only been once, but it was nice.
S. P.
Good beer and good service. Great bar, highly recommend.
R. W.
Amazing staff! Wonderful pub
A. S.
We came across this pub by accident and went in. I loved the ambiance. The red walls.. Lighting. Guys were so kind . Service with a smile. Not upmarket but I felt at home ..Clean. Like a friendly not noisy neighbourhood pub. Got. y vote...
D. B.
Great location, cozy stylish interior, quite spacious, tasty pizza, standard selection of beers and ales.
T. v. d. H.
Lovely cat. Decent Guinness. Was keen to try pizza. Went to order at the bar and was told someone would come over to table. Half an hour later, considered another round of drinks but waiter was a no show so got a takeaway from pizzeria closer to home. Would still recommend for drinks. Good atmosphere. But maybe don’t go on a Friday evening if you’re hungry!
P. Y.
Lovely bartenders, good choice of drinks and an absolutely fantastic atmosphere. Very original interior decoration. It has outdoor seating with wind protection which is quite impressive considering how often Londoners diss on smokers.
Really enjoyed myself the few times I went there, since the staff was very friendly, cracking jokes and giving recommendations. But the atmosphere and design of the place was grand.
Make sure to check the toilets. Interesting book titles
S. “. L.
Nice place! Fair bit of space, smoking area, food offered, not too noisy. Prices are nothing special either way. Staff are friendly and attentive. Good pub :)
P. G.
Hey, I've got really good memories from the Shakespeare. (Thanks Dynamis House). Great pub!
E. R.
Good venue to host a party at. Lorenzo (manager) and Alexandra (barmaid) are professional efficient and very helpful. Oscar, the owner of the venue is very charming and accommodating. A popular pub in the city, The Shakespeare tends to get very crowded (often) with both regulars and new-comers alike. The music could be a bit softer, I think. Their pizzas are good. Very spacious venue, but it'll help if the bar staff paid more attention to those queuing up at the back area rather than only focus on the customers in the main area. That said, I'd encourage anyone looking for a venue in the area to host a social gathering at (or a private dinner party) to get in touch with the venue management. We had a wonderful time last night, during the Xmas party that I hosted for a number of friends.
P. W.
Our 1st trip to a pub since lockdown, enjoyed lovely light lunch before we carry on with our City trek 😊😎
Z. S.
I really like the staff, especially the owner, Oscar!
Also, they have their own brand gin called Shakes' Ink. I am not a fan of gin at all but I drink this one straight. Soooooo good!
J. W.
Great selection of food and drink. Staff were friendly and helpful even with my vegan needs and had a fee options. The pizzas were amazing, for the dairy eaters they were very cheesy I was told, just a watch out incase you don't like cheese
V. M.
Tasty veggie sunday roast, albeit lacking in variety. Would have liked more veg and potatoes. Nut roast was enjoyable. They have punk on tap and a classic traditional interior. Located in the iconic Barbican, a great one to visit if in the area. I remember the staff also relatively friendly. Support this local pub.
I. M.
This has turned into a rather lovely little pub- still hidden behind its modernist exterior.
Excellent range of beers- all well kept.
Excellent coffee- as the staff are mostly/ all Italian and Oscar the manager is Italian, of course.
Interesting range of specials on the food board.
No heater on the terrace for us beWintered smokers yet.
M. E.
Nice place, beautiful staff, cute girl with a birds feather in hair at the bar. But prices disappointed me. I don't mind paying £5.50 for a pint of fresh crafted ale in an old cosy pub in central London, but not for a pint of London Pale Ale in a place with interior as poor as this one.
P. W.
We dropped in at the Shakespeare on the way to the Barbican. It's basically standard pub food with an Italian slant. I had ravioli. The food was OK. Pasta rather stodgy, but not bad. Busy, when we were there. A mainly younger crowd. Staff were enthusiastic. We like the Italian waiter. Food was good value but not outstanding.
I. L.
Just been here for lunch, don't think we will go back.
Service is extremely slow, with food arriving well over 40 minutes after ordering it. To be noted the tables were more than half empty. When we tried to check for our orders with the waitress she ignored us as much as possible.
We were quite disappointed with the food as well. We had focaccia and farinata, the first arrived with a cold filling, the second with way too much oil.
I had visited La Pia when they were in Ladbroke Grove and I had the impression the quality was superior.
Too bad, as we were looking forward to it.
L. C.
“The Shakespeare is a lively, family run pub very near Barbican tube. It’s got brilliant pizzas and a great range of English/ Italian food. The Gin promotion between 5-7 is very popular so on Thursday/Friday it gets really jumping. I hear great things about the wine selection but not being a wine drinker I’ll leave that to your own exploration....”
J. M.
Top spot for Pizza ( Calzone was amazing! ), good selection of beer on tap but the ale I had was slightly off but the problem was quickly rectified. Friendly irish fella behind the bar and another attentive young girl looked after my wife and I brilliantly
M. V.
I usually go there JUST for the focaccia al formaggio and farinata that are the best in town and is a genovese talking! La pia knows what to do!!!!
The downside is the customer service: the waitress is rude and slow. I usually don’t write reviews of this kind but really, it’s not the first time I go there and she ALWAYS act in the same way! (shouting orders to the other staff members from one side of the place to the other. She forgot our water, she took a wrong order, it took her 15 minutes to take our card payment even if the pub was empty.....)
S. C.
Very nice Pub opposite the Barbican, not too busy, nice, clean friendly, enjoyed a medium Margarita Pizza, easily share for 2, not noisy music, a bit of jazz in the background
G.
Safe selection of beer. Mainstream. Nice ambient vibe. Themed in the vibe of Shakespeare obviously. Some quotes on the wall. Guinness was good had 6 pints of it!
P. M.
Nice place from the inside but the staff don't know how to pull a pint, you pay over £5 pound for a pint and you don't even get a full pint. It was not a one off. It seems all the staff in this pub don't know how to pull a proper pint. They want to be careful Trading Standards don't pop by and do wights and measures on this place.
E. M.
Excellent Italian regional food: farinata e focaccia di Recco of themselves are worth the trip from the other side of London. The staff are friendly and could not have been more accommodating of our large mixed-age group. We will definitely return
B. T.
Great pizza and you must try sgabei with melted cheese!!! So good. The vibe is very familiar and it's a perfect place for dinner if you are a group or for a special occasion, the family behind it are top people and they'll make it an unforgettable time :)
L. E.
I went there in my lunch hour. It wasn't particularly busy. I placed my order of a chef's salad at 13.04. At 13.40 I went to the bar to enquire about my food, and it came about 5 minutes later. Slow service and the salad wasn't particularly great, mostly lettuce. I was charged £12.35 for a salad and large bottle of sparkling water. .
A. J.
Somewhat odd pub that charges for card transactions under £10 (pretty unusual these days) and has somewhat perfunctory service. Also quite gloomy with not much natural light. Not a terrible pub by a long stretch, but hardly an exceptional one.
E. P.
Great comedy and friendly service. Staff were very helpful in returning my girlfriends mobile phone which was left in the bar.
P. B.
Great place. Awesome customer service. Highly recommended
L. E.
Stefanie is the crazy French lady but she’ll look after you if you laugh with her. And always say oui
Lore is the manager and extremely friendly! Can pour the best Guinness!
P. J.
Okay pub, use to have three pool tables now all sadly gone. Was also a hang out for foreign students in the old YMCA next door, who were great fun. But on the plus side the outside seating has improved and now a wind break surrounds it
A. E.
We stayed in London for a few days for work. There was just a few hours to see what the town could offer between meetings, and we decided to have dinner at The Shakespeare.
Good food, good beer, friendly servers. This pub were just what I imagined England would be like. This was the most "Londony" thin we saw in the few days we stayed in town.
S. M.
Came here for Cocktails & Rhymes: A Poetry/Monologue Open Mic ( every Monday from 7-9.30pm ( fb CocktailsAndRhymes ) LOVED the venue, the small intimate space downstairs provided the perfect ambience.
Open mic went really well although I did get quite emotional. Hopefully will do more in the future. My thanks to Ed Keates for giving me this opportunity & friends Paul Hannah & Will yr support. Love the venue will be back.
This was my debut of 'You Led Me From Eternal Darkness Into The Light & Saved My Life' motivated by selfish reasons ( damn good mental health therapy! ) and the hope that if just one person can gain something positive by my shared experience in the public arena then my efforts have been all worthwhile.
I will for sure be doing more in the future and hopefully less rough around the edges!
Hanhan Ardwell 'Had a truly magical Monday with Michael Peacock and friends yesterday. I will definitely go again. Thanks Michael, inspirational.'
Michael Peacock 'Ah thanks darling blown away that you and Paul came to support me - for sure want to come back here in the future to present a more 'polished' version - and to be properly filmed this time - well I did not have all the props!'
M. G.
A hidden gem hear Barbican station. It is a youthful place, much larger than what it seems from the road. There is a good selection of find and wines along with the usual beers and whiskeys.
I. M.
Love this pub. Great staff, good beer, good food. Quirky decor but well worth a visit if you're in the area.
D. F.
Used to be a lot better, when the YMCA over the road, which catered to foreign students was open and they frequented. Food is OK and service acceptable.
Used to have 3 pool tables, for which there is more than enough room for, but they graudally ran these down, broken cues, missing balls, no care for the tables etc and now that part of the pub is filled with what looks like second hand tat from a junk store for people to sit on. People could get chattty round the tables and strangers could meet and converse.
Whilst not that bad, atmosphere has gone, and a lot less socialising and mixing of customers now. Used to be a destination pub, now nearer last choice if nothing else within walking distance that could be livelier.
A. M.
If I'm in Barbican this is where I eat. Not a big menu but always something worth giving a try. Pub not too big so not very noisy but always someone in. Well worth a visit.
S. K.
Very nice looking pub from the inside. Friendly staff and good beers. You should also give the burger a try was really good!
W. W.
Great pub
E. B.
It's fine but overpriced. The pizzas are quite nice but we were charged a large service fee for them simply bringing over cutlery and pizza (we ordered at the bar rather than table service)
F. B.
A lovely little (actually quite spacious) pub with tons of charm and character. Also excellent pizzas, and a friendly black cat.
D. M.
An honest pub in the heart of Barbican. I've always found the service to be decent.
M. J.
Amazing pizzas at this place. The staff is Italian, so expect warm pints of beer and wrong cocktail mixes, but their pizzas are among the best in London
J. A.
Pretty good local pub. Decent selection of beers and a small gin menu. Food its pretty good for a pub but service is a bit slow.
C. H.
Great friendly place, I was on my own, but locals welcomed me in, staff very comical! 👍
A. W.
Good atmospheric pub. Comfy seating, music not too loud. Good for post Barbican concert drink.
P. J.
Good beer selection, pleasant staff, relaxed atmosphere, easy drinking... Oh and have a pizza, they are quite good!
S. F.
Food was not cooked thoroughly and half things from the menu were not available due to oven not working. Good wine though.
d.
A busy local with good food and beer. Can get a bit noisy in here in the evenings but it's a nice place for a beer and a bite
K. F.
Popped in for a lunchtime punt lovely pub friendly bar staff and good selection of beers will definitely have food next time
J. S.
Great staff.
Food looks popular for meat eaters.
A. C.
Hands down the nicest pint of Guinness I've ever tasted. It was crafted with love and a true perfectionist at the bar!
F. B.
Good beers, not so bad pizza and italian food. Maybe sometimes too crowded, but it's a good choice.
G. M.
Good local pub with friendly staff and decent beer on tap. Great pizza too...
M. G.
Quaint British pub in the City. Good beer selection and comfy seating. Didn't get to see the cat though, next time.
T. M. P.
I wouldn’t expect that a typical British pub would serve so good pizzas and calzones. Food was brought in due diligence and prices were good.
P. R.
Good friendly service. Saw some comedy here which was really good too
A. d. S.
Great place to have a beer after work, if you walking from Oxford circus towards Angel , Islington, Barbican and Goswell Road. Great burgers
I. D.
4 stars because the owner's a cat! Atleast that was what we gathered talking to the not so talkative staff. The panterdly black feline named Otto is running the place as far as we can tell. Rather expensive. But you cat what you payed for.
W. H. S.
Decent Guinness and the 'beer garden' let's you watch the double busy Londoners go past as you relax.
W. T.
Nice little pub for a group get together, perfect for after the gym. Nothing revolutionary if you need to impress!
D. W.
Great atmosphere and good music. A nice pub to while away an hour or two post work
R. S.
Great selection of beers, nice and jolly staff and waiters, always eager to inform and please
D. G.
Good pub. Variety of ail and serves food. Friendly atmosphere
C. B.
I went to dinner with a friend and the place was a bit crowded so the food took ages to be served. But the manager was helpful and solve the problem easyly.
G. R.
Classic and good place.. But just noticed in some.part the ants were falling.. so had to shift a place..
I. A.
great beer, amazing pizza and the addition of a pub cat! Love this place
J. C.
Bit pricey at £6 a pint but the bar staff are polite and friendly, which earns the extra star.

I went there few times during the afternoon - last week we went there on Saturday night - Staff was super friendly, waited for us to finish before closing even if we were almost the only clients. Thanks!

The grass-fed beef steak I ate here was hands down the best pub meal I have ever eaten, and it didn't break the bank
