Reviews of The Ship Tavern
B. B.
The Oak Room restaurant (upstairs) - Fantastic place! Service was friendly professional and efficient. We even saw the chef and it was obvious he was passionate about his food. I had the Scallops, rib-eye steak and cheese board. I did book this place hoping to have the Beef Wellington but unfortunately it was off the menu when we visited. The waitress was very apologetic though. Regardless, the food and atmosphere was top notch. Very classic but relaxed and cozy without being stuffy. Pricey, but worth it.
The main bar - it's alright, has the same ol world charm as the Oak Room however when we went they didn't have much in the way of cask ales on and the two bartenders didn't seem very interested in serving us, however to be fair it was just before christmas and they were also dealing with the 2 pint wonders that try to drink for England.
That aside the spiced apple and rum mulled drink was lovely.
Basically if you're going for the Oak room then it's great.

Great staff and good pub. Only thing is fair few homeless people pass by but they are polite and as long as you acknowledge them , say hello or you don't have spare change, they are fine.

Enjoyed a very late dinner at this bustling pub in Holborn not far from the British Museum. We sat outside on a warm September evening and were served with remarkable promptness (for a busy night) by the two young servers. The chicken ham and tarragon pie was excellent. Would love to return post-covid and experience this 16th century institution from the inside.
T. C.
Really lovely food. A little more expensive than other Sunday roasts and good portions. Great jazz music played in the background. Staff very friendly. I recommend this place.
C. H.
Very nice traditional pub literally next to Holborn underground station. Inside the pub is very classic, but on this trip I opted for their outside sheltered seating. Lovely board of English meats and perfect chips. The staff were ever so friendly. Can see why this place is so well regarded. Will be back. A* for this boozer.
M. H.
Always liked the ship.
Staff were very convivial tonight and it wasn't busy, so enjoyed banter as I was served.
Have yet to make it upstairs, but so far, no need, as had all I needed - great beer and lovely company.
If you're going to the British museum, this is the boozer to use as it is somewhere you have to find.
Enjoy!

Great traditional pub hiding up at slim alley off the main road. Popular with locals and lost tourists. Beautiful décor inside and out.
D. C.
Friendly staff and lovely dining room upstairs. However my wife could not eat her main as it was ever so salty. The staff were very apologetic and removed her food from the bill bit it was a shame that spoilt an otherwise good experience.
D. H.
Great pub tucked in a corner but worth seeking out. Atmospheric and friendly.
A. E.
Quite well hidden little gem, missed it twice as down a little alley. Very oldie worldie even had a fire going. Not overly busy so decent service & food great infarct it was a massive dinner. Didn't really fancy pudding as seemed a bit heavy after such a big meal. Drink prices average for London. Thought price if roast dinner just a dad expensive but then again haven't had a Sunday roast out in years
R. C. L.
Covid has alloved me to visit this great place again. This time I had the Pork belly sunday roast, excellent tender and not too fat. All ways nice to have a bar with a nice assortment of gins to wrap the meal up 😎. Staff is very nice and acommodating!

Thank You All so much. Can’t compliment everyone enough for the brilliant service and warm welcome we got last night here. I have drank in here on numerous occasions but decided to try the Oak Room upstairs with a bunch of friends. We were a big party and everyone was so friendly and efficient and made for a fantastic night. They had really made an effort to ensure we had a good evening. Oh and the food was fantastic too. Thanks again to you all.
T. H.
So nice to find an original well run london pub. Ok i am slightly biased as serves Old Peculiar but all the ales are a great standard. Lovely upstairs as well as the traditional downstairs pub. if you are in london you must come here. avoid the Greene Kings and Wetherspoons, this is a real pub.
S. F.
Dined upstairs on a Friday lunchtime in the Oak room. Great tasting food that came out quickly - we had the risotto, sea bass and christmas pie. Service was good and friendly. Prices on the high side hence the 4 star
O. P.
This place is excellent and a special thanks to Gin, who helped rescue our evening. Our group had planned to watch England v Germany at another pub but it turned out they had double booked our table leaving us out on the street a few mins before kick off! Gin and team made a real effort to squeeze another table into a fully booked pub, so that we could enjoy the game - what a hero - amazing service. Apart from anything else this is a charming british pub with friendly staff, not many left in London like it, (this coming from a Londoner!)
We’ve already booked to come back for the next match!
J. G.
A lovely boozer in central London. Good selection of ales, and a true example of a classic London pub tucked away just a stone’s throw from the bustle of Holborn.
N. S.
Really nice food. We had a couple of starters to share. Beer was good. They seemed to have a function on upstairs which had an impact on the service. Maybe more staff should have been put on to help cope, maybe they were but were ill!!?? Anyway, it meant that we had to wait for our service a little longer than we would really have liked, both for our food and for our drinks.
J. N.
Massive disappointment.
No ales on handpull.
Whilst I was there a woman asked for a bottle of water to be told that they'd run out of still water.
A family sat near me asked for three roast beefs and one roast beef but received the opposite.
I've only given it three stars for old times sake as this used to be a top pub that took pride in the quality and variety of its ales.
A. A.
One of my favourite weatherspoon pub,
Alot of setting area available, very clean and lovely staff,
Prices as usual very affordable and unbelievable,
P. G.
A 15thC tavern. Great beer including Old Perculiar on tap! Very personable landlord who's been there ten years. Wonderful decor. Food is reasonably priced : Fish finger sandwich and chips for £8 and steak roll and chips £13 were very tasty indeed.
b. m.
Great beer, well kept, expensive London prices :(, hopefully the amazing looking restaurant is still upstairs (used to look like a decadent Captain's cabin/dining room from an old galleon) .. but we only had over priced bar food,.. cold sausage roll and disappointing bland tasting fish finger sandwich for about 15 quid.. that said had a good night drinking with friends in a proper Old oak and beam style pub, that is nicely tucked away down an almost Diagonally (Harry Potter) style lane.. great for a Christmas mulled wine etc
T. L. R.
Great food and staff.. Its been open since 1539..thats enuff said
D. H.
Found this pub in a book of the best pubs in London and had to check it out. Since it was the middle of the afternoon, we just ordered some starters to share. We had the Spicy Chorizo Hash browns, Crumbled Brie and Lobster Risotto. Everything was absolutely delicious! Each dish was perfectly balanced. My favorite is definitely the Brie. I want to try to make this when I get back home. It was truly heavenly!
J. D. L.
We were visiting from the US. Never had Beef Wellington before and this place has set the bar high. The sticky toffee pudding was also excellent! Downstairs is more of a pub environment while upstairs is more for dining.
A. F.
Nice old pub in central London.
Decent range of beers on tap and the bar staff were friendly. Good atmosphere for a Monday night and a nice place to settle in for a few pints.
Prices are a bit high, even for central London. £6 for my pint.
Food was average unfortunately. Healthy servings but quality lacking. Our goujons were burnt and the steak sandwich lacked a bit of flavour.
T. M.
Lovely old pub, little hidden gem very close to Holborn Tube Station.
Will definitely come again.
S. W.
Three of us popped in on Sunday 19th July 2021 for the first time and were transported to an air conditioned heritage heaven. The staff taking orders and the bar man were terrific. Nothing was too much trouble. I mixed up our order but the bar man dealt with it jovially and professionally. The ales were obviously treated with great care and we were made to feel like we were valued regulars. Perfect. Just like a pub should be. We can't wait to return .
D. L.
Incredibly cute, with amazing specials. Vibe is excellent, though more modern than the 1549 establishment date. Good selection of beers too.
S. G.
I've been here for just drinks, a few times, but managed to eat in the wonderful restaurant upstairs. Amazing food and people in a traditional pub setting
Y. E.
Nice English pub with a large gin selection if you like G&T's. Pretty large downstairs area with small sections of seating, and a nice dining room upstairs. The mac and cheese with brisket is delicious. Has a cool feeling of history, too!
G. D.
A pint of Theakstens Best, gorgeous, OMG!!!
Lovely Gents, with lovely hand wash and curious taps!
A. W.
This little badboy is tucked away but is still pretty busy most times. Come here for lunch - its a bit heavy on the wallet but the food is good. Good selection of ales too.
a. k.
Pubs looks amazing, food is delicious and very nice staff BUT please do something about the terrible booking system and phone line when having no choice but call when the restaurant is busy ! Thank you
F. O.
Cosy place. Highly raccomend cocktail made from a lovey lady
S. K.
Slightly overpriced food but delicious! Love the atmosphere and friendly staff.
D. C.
Lovely food in the seated area upstairs. Go for the pies which were fab. Great service and convenient for Holborn tube and theatre district.
J. B.
A warm, friendly and inviting pub.
The food was top notch, had the soup and Wellington (which was deceptively filling).
The interior was very well decorated and had that Christmasy vibe to it.
The staff were very friendly eventhough we were a bit noisy.
Would definitely go here again.
G. C.
Great old pub. It's a must just to see how old and characterful it is. Plus they do a great Guinness
S. A.
The Beef Wellington was superb, and our overall dining experience terrific. Can't wait for an opportunity to go back.
J. M.
Beautiful tavern in a hidden street in London: the restaurant floor is decorated like a real ship. we loved the breaded and fried cheese appetizer, I got the trio of lamb, simply divine, my boyfriend the pig also remarkable, good the red beer of the house. very friendly and helpful staff to explain the ingredients in the dishes.
K. L.
Great atmosphere in a historic pub with wonderful food and good drinks selection. My first time eating indoors at a pub in 6 months and I'm so glad I chose this place. Jazz on the speakers, not too packed for lunchtime, covid safe measures. Food isn't cheap but is very much worth it. Staff were also very friendly and attentive. Will be returning.
I. S.
A hidden gem! This pub bursts with character. Excellent selection of real ales, stouts and gins.
We also had a pleasure of dining in here, and I cannot wait to come back for more!
Amazing vegetarian options, cooked to perfection! Efficient and friendly staff. Reasonably priced. The atmosphere in the dining area upstairs is cosy and romantic, which is quite different from the drinking area downstairs.
S. R.
Amazing Sunday roast, friendly staff
S. b.
Quality pub dating back to 1549. Lovely staff. Ok for teenagers to join in. Eco bags of nuts. Great quality drinks selection. Top marks!
N. B.
Enjoyed some dirty tackle (Ale) a really good atmosphere
K.
I loved their mulled wine, best one so far! (I've had a few in London 😃)
B. W.
Nice staff, great food and a great location
Ν. Λ.
Amazing experience! A traditional English pub, very well designed, with high quality things. We didn’t drink, but we ate like queens two traditional and very tasty dishes. One of our best choices in London!
B. F.
Lovely place with a great atmosphere. Sunday roast was good but nothing extraordinary.
N. T.
After a long day of travel and other activities, we found this restaurant, which was close by our hotel. The first floor contained a lively and inviting pub. However, we went upstairs to a wonderful dining room, which looked exactly what you would expect in London: rich dark woods, leaded glass windows, etc. (They said this tavern was established in the mid 16th century).
We ordered a large beef pie that was meant to be shared. It was so big, we actually had enough left over for lunch the next day (our room had a small kitchenette). It was exceptionally good. We also had a wonderful soup, which was also quite large, served in a tureen.
This dining experience was a exceptional ending for my first trip to London; I will never forget it.
T. P.
Nice and cool inside, good food quick service, very clean, well paced, lovely old pub, slightly off the beaten track
H. T.
Good traditional London pub full of character good selection of beers I've call in a few times for a lunchtime drink.
The food looks really good. Warm and friendly atmosphere.
X. S. P.
This pub, even though is close to the touristy area, is lucky to be tucked away in an alley with its back to the high street, therefore not many people frequent it. Inside the pub, the decoration is really beautiful and classy, whereas if you want, you can also sit at their new heated terrace outside (nothing spectacular about the view though). The food is decent but not amazing, but is well worth visiting this place for a nice drink in a cosy space if you reserve inside.
1.
Food was excellent! Service was a bit slow but hey we are coming out of a pandemic. Definitely worth a visit if your looking for a drink and some good quality pub food.
S. E.
Nice little spot! Off the main road... a lovely candlelit restaurant upstairs... a traditional london pub downstairs... some great history and lovely staff! You'll pay over a 5'er for a Guiness but that's central innit. They make thier own pies which is cool... great bar snacks as well including homemade big meaty sausage rolls and scotch eggs. It was busy on a Monday so imagine it HEAVES oh Thurdsday/Friday!! Lacks seating downstairs but accommodates well.
A. B.
Food was good, but definitely a bit pricey if you’re just going for a quick lunch. The garlic mushroom on ciabatta starter was tasty, but a bit heavy on the cream.
J. L.
Modern atmosphere, good taste of food. We enjoyed the Fish&chips very much. You can eat meals on the second floor.
c.
Great location and old school feel, and nice selection of beer. Could be vastly improved by better service. The staff seem not to give a damn if you stay or go. Maybe they really don't.
B. P.
Nice little place. It's our of the way, good to not be sitting right on Holborn like the 'spoons down the street.
BTW, I found my ring. Thanks for taking my number to let me know if you found it though. Much appreciated
F. D.
Had a great Sunday roast on the terrace. The inside looks like an old fashioned British pub which is cool.
E. K.
Small but perfectly formed - lots of nooks and crannies, excellent beers on tap and great bar snacks. Wine looks great too.
D. S. P.
Fantastic tucked away pub with average London prices. Quite ornate ceiling plasterwork, dark wood interior and food is served In pleasant surroundings. Well worth a visit off the beaten track.
S. t. B.
Fantastic Pub right in the heart of London! Amazing Gin Menu. Great atmosphere. Really good night out.
A. G.
Still fond of this Holborn bolthole. Beer selection was less than in pre-Covid times.
M. B.
The food is great, best pub food in London. The Beef Wellington and the Pie are amazing. Great variety of beers. Try the Ale of day, always a nice surprise.
P. S.
Lovely old boozer, staff and Sunday lunch were fantastic x
D. H.
Thank you for fitting just 2 of us in tonight when it’s raining. Great service and beer, thank you!
P. A.
Was pleasantly surprised with this place. Right next to Holborn station, but not touristy. They were definitely understaffed and the staff seemed stressed, however, they were all lovely and provided a friendly service! I enjoyed the food and had a lovely time.
S. B.
Fantastic pub, friendly staff and good selection of drinks.
S. K.
A pub that has experienced a delicious Sunday roast. Inside the fantastic store, it makes the meal more enjoyable.
A. Y.
Great interior, good food and service. Toilets only in the pub downstair not good.
P. S.
Lovely old boozer, the beer is kept in top condition and the food is lovely.
J. S.
Tucked away behind Holborn underground station, this old pub is beautifully awkward. The Sunday roast is excellent, order from the bar downstairs for a more social environment.
T. M.
Very nice, a traditional English pub with plenty of character.
R. A.
Tasty Sunday lunch and the drinks were good but the prices are pretty ridiculous, even for central London. We sat outside where the tables are rather tightly grouped under a gazebo.
L. M.
Lovely warm and friendly atmosphere! Love the staff at the ship! Really a big pleasure to be a local customer to such a fantastic pub. Food is absolutely stunningly delicious. There sunday roast is a die for..
B. R. W.
Nice venue tucked away behind Holborn station. We were attracted by the fairy lights 🙂
P. B.
This was our 2nd time dining at this very cosy, olde worlde pub. It has an abundance of character and atmosphere. The pub downstairs is intimate and the dining room upstairs equally so. The brilliant staff handled the patrons masterfully, guiding them through the covid protocol with minimum fuss and maximum safety. Service was spot on. There were a bunch of guys who were slightly rowdy but very apologetic once their noise level was quietly, but firmly pointed out to them by our waiter. It was just Christmas spirits. Our food was delicious and hearty, although the pork belly was slightly overdone. Ask for the red wine jus to be served in a side jug, they are very generous with it. My chicken ham and tarragon pie was packed full of flavour. So delicious. It was the perfect place to end our day in London after walking a convaluted 6 mile route from Tower Bridge discovering lots of hidden gems away from the more popular places. We even had a table near the log fire. What more could one ask for? Superb.
p. r.
Amazing food and drinks. Was my birthday last night and they surprised me with a free drink. Wonderful staff
G. B.
Proper pub, good beer, good service. Traditional feel.
R. U.
Great food in a great old pub, the food was superb.
M. R.
Absolutely fabulous olde worlde pub up a back alley.
L.
Clean pub. Food was amazing. Friendly service. Look forward to going back.
P. K.
Very expensive, on a £108 bill they wanted to add £13.50 service charge. The so called service was zilch we had to ask for the condiments, vinegar, ketchup etc, a pint of draft beer £6.50 🍺.
R. M.
Great meal and value for money. The fish and chips was huge
N. M.
Good selection of beers and great venue.
S. S.
Stopped in while on the Liquid History Tour (be sure to check them out). They were about to close, but stayed open for us to try the Elderberry & Thyme G&T. You MUST try it!
D. T.
Down an alley, all the best pubs are! Delightful olde pub with great beer and staff.
A. G.
For some reason, this is considered a 'hidden' place. Not sure why. It has a great location, lots of old world decor and great food. Huge beer and liquor selection as well. ;)
P. P.
This is quite a small pub but one with plenty of character. It has a great selection of beers and wine. It is dog friendly and has always had a dog in it the 4 or 5 times I have been. They have a pub quiz every Tuesday which is extremely popular and good fun. I am yet to try the food but the menu looks good and is on the agenda.
L. G.
Superb place. Love the atmosphere. Fresh rosies on the table and a oil lamp. We were in a rush and asked for a snack of chips. They arrived hot and yummy with a side of chilli mayo. Which was perfect, within 5 minutes. I am not a pub person but I make an exception with this one. My sauvignon blanc and the merlot were good.
J. C. K.
Excellent little pub just round the corner from Holborn Tube (down a narrow side street). Nice atmosphere, pleasant bar staff. I went in the afternoon when it was a bit quieter, but it started to get busy in the evening! There is a restaurant upstairs (which I didn't visit) but looks good!
M. R.
Superb little friendly pub hidden away only a short walk from its more shouty neighbours. Historic boozer with dark wood interior, well worth seeking out. Enjoy. M
P. T.
Stopped in one quiet weekday lunch time for a pint and some chips. The chips came with an incredible bacon mayo which has been life changing. The beer was good (I tried their new bespoke ale), and there was a reasonably friendly atmosphere despite a rather unprofessional altercation between someone who I assumed to be the landlord and one of the staff.
R. S.
Superb pub with an even-better dining room upstairs. Excellent food - one of the best pubs for food in London. A hidden gem. Don’t tell anyone! Ps. Have the sharing beef and ale pie! Or the brisket. Or the Sunday roast chicken or pork. Or just about anything on the menu!
B. M.
Really nice upstairs dining room with a more traditional feel. Good range of top-end pub type food on the menu, with home-cut chips (which were sadly a little lacking on this occasion - oversized and undercooked). Service was reasonable and while the friendliness of our waiter was appreciated, he slightly missed the mark with jokes about how the soup was served.
M. M.
Old-style historic pub with good ambience and friendly staff, close to Holborn tube. Casual atmosphere. Live jazz music downstairs at the bar on the Sunday evening we went. Fantastic range of gins. The only downside for me was the limited options in counter snacks at the bar - sausage roll or Scotch eggs. It was busy on the Sunday evening in April we went but not obscenely crowded.
D. J.
We didn’t know they only serve the Sunday Roast on Sundays.. but their other menus are also very delicious!
G. E.
Nice little boozer tucked in an alleyway off the main road. Good selection of drinks plus a (small) standing area outside
B.
Very well located and great decoration.
They offer quite a wide collection of excellent spirits which you should try in addition to the usual beers and ciders.
It can get extremely crowded but if you move towards the back of the pub it gets a bit better.
G. N.
Had the most amazing roast here and the most average one. 1 for 2. But friendly staff and great location, especially the outdoor area
S.
Superb food served in a very classy atmosphere. The pie for two is memorable as the meat inside melt in your mouth and the portion is big enough to feed 4! I tried for the first time the beef wellington and I was very happy with it. The brown ale accompanied very well the dinner. Excellent service. Highly recommended.
S. O.
Very English pub feel. Food upstairs - we ate here. Was very yummy starter and main meals though brownie was a bit dry. Only mention this as the prices were on the higher side, not really classic pub but price but you can find main meals for around the 15£ mark so ok for London prices. Although the savory food I can definitely vouch for
S. P.
Friendly historic pub with reasonable pub food and a few nice ales on tap.
S. D.
Beautiful tavern with fantastic food and drinks. Highly recommend!
S. F.
Traditional English style pub and reasonably priced for London. I have been there a few times for lunch and the food has always been great. My recommendation would be the steak sandwich. Staff are also really friendly.
If you're in the area it's certainly worth calling in for a pint or two.
R. W.
Excellent old traditional pub. They have an excellent selection if Gins here and the house speciality of the day is with a try. The beer and lagers are also good. The jazz on a Sunday is wonderful to listen to. I have been to the resturant upstairs on several occasions and have not been disappointed. It could be deemed to be a little pricey.
C. L.
Historic, interesting building. Helpful and friendly staff.
T.
Stick to the classics. I had been recommended this place by some friends for the great big meals. I was slightly disappointed, I may have gone too fancy by choosing the trio of lamb, as the pub classics, such as pies and fish and ships looked a lot better. The service was sub par, entrees coming put before the bread that we ordered first, confusing over drink orders, which could be explained by the fact we had three different waitresses serving us. Also felt quite rushed as there was very short amount of time between the entrees and mains being served. The atmosphere in the dining area was great, and would be tempted to go back for a classic pub meal.
N. I.
This is a very highly regarded pub with a separate cosy dining room upstairs. The pub is always very busy with patrons serving a range of beers, wine and other drinks.
I have visited the restaurant 3 times in the year and I have not been disappointed with the quality of food or the service. The menu is updated every 3 months with some favourite items being maintained.
A. F.
I was invited by friends to this pub; very historical and unique in many respects. I love this old English pub but it is ridiculously overcrowded and too pricey for my liking. This establishment definitely deserves more than 5 stars; well maintained and preserved. The price of gin shot in this pub is sinful, for that alone I took back a star off my rating but still left with 5. Why? They are more than 5 stars venue. Highly recommended but when you visit, remember to take lots of money with you.
B. D.
I do love this beautiful tucked away little pub and restaurant. Full of character and live bands / jazz on Sundays. Like gin? You will love their dedicated gin menu. If only gin was one of your 5 a day! Sigh
C. S.
Lovely pub and restaurant! Great choice on the menu for a Sunday dinner, almost impossible to choose. The roast potatoes are amazing and the Yorkshire puddings are gigantic which is always a winner! The decorations are pretty nifty around the pub with the little portholes and window's really keeping with the theme set by the name. Definitely worth a look-in for anyone stating in Holborn.
G. D.
Went here for pre-theatre dinner. It is very popular & so you must book ahead. Great atmosphere & ambience in the Oak Dining Room. We had the ribeye steaks which were superb. Very polite & attentive service. This place is not cheap but then quality never is. Highly recommended.
N. S.
Busy but great atmosphere... going again
L. R.
The bar was quite busy when we arrived, but only a few people were in the dining room. The atmosphere was everything we expected but the food was absolutely stellar. The steak and ale and lamb pies were delicious and the fish and chips was declared the "best I've ever had".
T. H.
Very cool place. Quiet at first, but then the regular crowd rolled in, a jazz band came and started playing... this was amazing atmosphere. The band was a bunch of "mature" fellows, who I thought I would need to carry their instruments for. Once the music started... you'd never know their age. They were amazing. Which energized the space and made this an AWESOME, authentic experience.
E. M.
The reviews looked good but unfortunately we did not like the place. The upstairs dining hall is too dark and damp. The food was just ok (we had fish&chips, a lamb dish and wild boar sausages, as well as some starters) and for average quality food we found the place to be over-priced.
j. r.
Had a wonderful lunch at The Ship Tavern yesterday! The Food was simply excellent - the staff were very friendly and helpful . Great atmosphere - Loved the beautiful Christmas decorations in the oak dining room ! Fabulous selection of Gin wine and craft beer all served at the perfect temperature- would thoroughly recommend! Can’t wait to go there again!
J. L.
Great location round the back of Holborn station. I found this pub very noisy even when there were very few people around. It is also relatively small but what I found let it down was that my pint did not taste good. It tasted like the cider lines had not been cleaned for a very long time
E.
Great fish and chips, friendly staff, good ambiance
V. R.
The ship Tavern is a great find around the back of Holborn station. It is small but well visited and well staffed - which isn't always the case for other pubs in the area. They have a great selection of drinks and also a separate dining area upstairs. First visit but will definitely be back but I can imagine it gets busy as an after work drinking hole.
D. “.
Good beer, homemade scotch eggs and pork pies. Selection of ‘home-made’ drinks such as ‘peanut butter and jam’ or ‘old-fashioners’. One VERY busy barmaid but the rest of the staff are chilled and helpful
M. “. P.
Nice traditional English pub. The atmosphere is really good but the food wasn't as good as I was expecting. One of my friend took the tuna steak which was overly seasoned covering completely the taste of the tuna. The dessert have been a disappointment as well. Such a pity as the place as got great potential.
R. p.
Probably some of the best british food I've ever had. A little expensive but well worth the price for sure. Starters a perfect portion size and the mains are absolutely stunning and taste delicious
C. J.
Stumbled into and out of this hidden little gem. Charming pub with cozy atmosphere, friendly staff and excellent menu. Fish and chips an absolute must. Liked them so much we ate there twice. Just go!
A. B.
Nice pub with outdoor seating, not far from Holborn Station
C. H.
It's hard to find a good pub in central London. This is a really good pub. Both the bar and the upstairs restaurant are beautifully decorated and cosy. There is a huge selection of gins on offer and live jazz on Sunday which is very popular. The Sunday roast was excellent, tasty with big servings.
D. B.
Quality pub. Gets busy but great beer and I don't get to say that often for London. Worth seeking out. Didn't order food but the ribeye steak sandwich with cashel blue sounded amazing. For those unfamiliar, Cashel blue is a mild Irish blue, and I don't like blue cheese but I love this.

Prior to going to the UK, I had said that I wanted a lovely night out and to enjoy a beautiful beef wellington (not much more English than that). I jumped online whilst staying in London and read the positive reviews for this place and decided to check it out. I'm so glad I did - it was possibly one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. Excellent value for money and so beautiful, I wished I had discovered it earlier in my trip so that I could've gone a handful of times. Make sure you check it out - such a beautiful little place and the food is just delicious.
M. H.
Traditional and what a pub should be. Excellent.
M. T.
Really enjoyed the roast we had in the restaurant here. Staff were helpful and friendly, it was busy so worth booking. The bar downstairs had a chilled vibe and a good selection of drinks, some rums you wouldn't find normally in the bars of London.
R. P.
Great gin selection at this small pub. It is a little quieter than other pubs due to the location being down a small side street alley 1 minute away from Holborn station.
Typically it would be busy with office workers from the surrounding area.
C. S.
This is a really nice pub tucked out the way near Holborn station. They had an excellent gin selection to choose from and the staff were very knowledgeable about them and what to pair them with. We did not eat but the menu looked good and the food being eaten on the table next to us looked tasty and was a good sized portion. Definitely recommend this place for a bit of a break from the hustle of the City!
B. W.
Lovely gin bar with bartenders that are keen on providing excellent service. Tommy in particular was amazing and gave us lovely tips, and suggested an excellent gin to taste as well. Definitely planning to go back another time
L. V.
What a lovely pub! Very inviting. Clean and comfortable. Good swift bar service. Sports TV available. Good range of beers and wines. London Prices. AMAZING food and service in the romantic restaurant upstairs. I highly recommend this pub/restaurant.
D. W.
Very cosy place and a gem to find. Sunday roast was tasty although they've forgotten my Yorkshire and spuds but brought it immediately when I asked. Good and pleasant service otherwise.
s.
Had dinner in the restaurant, everything was just fantastic. Can't fault anything at all and will definitely be coming back.
Advise you to book a table (were there on a Saturday night) as plenty of people came in without reservation and couldn't get a seat.
K. H.
Would definitely recommend getting the burgers
H. W.
Cosy hang out after work with great atmosphere!
N. W.
We came for Sunday roast and it was beyond excellent - so much so we’re going back tonight to try the rest of the menu. Can’t recommend enough. A little hidden gem!
S. C.
The decor is fantastic, slightly off the main road means it's quiet and cozy. Great place to take visiting friends for a traditional English meal. I love their beef welly and sticky date pudding!
J. F.
Nice pub in great location close to Holborn tube station (and opposite my office, which is the main attraction for me). Fairly priced drinks for the area and the food is also good (although I've only eaten bar snacks and haven't tried the full menu). The main downside is that it's small and becomes very crowded on weekday evenings.
R. H.
The Beef Wellington was excellent. They were understaffed, which made service slow. We were lucky that we arrived early, as we were able to get our meal order in before the restaurant got crowded. The plus side of the inattention is that you don't feel that they are trying to push you out the door so that they can seat a new customer. Would have been bad if I had been in a rush. But, luckily, that night I was looking for a relaxed pace.
C. C.
Really nice decor: NOT an old man's pub, great choice of gins and rums but not such a good selection of beers. The food is quite pricey, good bit probably not worth the hefty bill.
Oh, and they show the FIFA world cup matches, so could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on which side of the fence you're on...
B. M.
Nice pub, very convenient for the station, but also around the corner so only deliberate customers (i.e no passers by, which is good). Well stocked bar, nice traditional pub feel, fairly old setting.
B. M.
Enjoyed a surprise Sunday roast for my birthday with the family. Very good food, friendly staff, cozy decor. Unforeseen lovely touch from the staff underlining the special day.
I. M.
Went here with friends from the States who wanted to take us to a traditional London pub for lunch. I had lamb which was excellent, and they also did a good range of cask ales. Will definitely return. Recommended
J. B.
Must visit to this great pub and restaurant is highly recommended! There is Gin Jazz nights too do check that out. Outstanding restaurant area up stairs... Go for S booth so cosy and perfect music playing..
Visit the quirky John Soanes museum around the corner. It just all awesome 😊
T. V. G.
Great typical British Pub. Nice selection of beers and gins!
Y. S.
Very cozy and old place but refurbished (16th century if I recall correctly) with wooden settings all over and amazingly it kind of kept it's heritage throughout. Needs a bit of crowd control around the evening since it becomes very crowded and no matter where you sit you get bumped into. On the upside they have a separate restaurant on the upper floor.
P. B.
Food is excellent and a great way to warm up a cold winters day. The staff is very friendly and the dining room on the first floor had a charming, warm and very classic atmosphere.
L. B.
The Ship rocks. We love that we can bring our dog inside, Great place for a beer and bar snacks and when its warm the outside is packed. Looking forward to trying the restaurant upstairs as have heard good things about it
G. F.
Lovely food and service in a proper pub
I. T.
I have been here a couple of times for dinner in the upstairs room, which decorated with wood paneling, both times the food was very good. Also a good variety of real ales. A great place two minutes from Holborn station in a quite, atmospheric back street.
J. B.
A great find by my wife on our last trip to London. They serve a savory single serving Beef Wellington and have friendly service with a good gin selection.
T. Y.
Incredible ales and beef Wellington in a historic location!
G. K.
An amazing little pub situated slap bang in the middle of Holborn. Wonderful food and lovely service, this place provides a welcome oasis away from the hectic central london wild life. Serving the full array of pub foods and decorated in a classic pub style with wooden panelling. Always a nice place to pop for meal and a good drink.
J. B.
Great pub, very friendly bar staff. Based on that we returned for a meal in the upstairs restaurant which was excellent. Really good and we look forward to our next visit!
C. M.
Interesting history and good place for some drinks.
D. W. (.
I like it because it has Old Peculiar on tap. Lots of places to lean on,so still good if you can't find a seat. Typical London pub. Friendly staff.
E. B.
Really friendly staff and delicious food. Pub downstairs, restaurant upstairs. Good old boozer with their own gin. Hidden gem near Holborn.
N. T.
Showed up in the Oak Room without a reservation. Luckily they had a reservation that hadn’t shown up so they gave us their table. Good service, delicious food, nice drink menu.
J. G.
I went for dinner pre-show at this restaurant. The pub downstairs, is the usual English pub, reasonable beers etc...
The chef in this place is a genius. I tried the lobster risotto to start and the peppered Venison for main and the raspberry sorbet for dessert. If you don't like big flavours, it will be a shock to your palette. Although the risotto was perfect, delicious bisque with other flavours, the strength of the Parmigiano-Reggiano was too acidic for the balance of the lobster. I think that was more of a preference for people that like a lot of acid.
Then the Venison. It was glorious with the haggis croquette, beans and dauphinoise. The Venison, peppered was peppered strong, and balanced beautifully with everything else on the plate.
The sorbet was delicious, but to be honest, I only ordered it, because the meal had been so gourmandise.
A special mention to our waitress Helida, who did everything possible to keep our table happy.
Only one downside. Typical English pub wine list. Awful, but to balance that, the beers were a better compliment than the anything on that wine list.
J. W.
Had a late lunch upstairs in the dining room. Food was delicious and the service was friendly and professional. Loved the atmosphere as well. Definitely recommended if you’re walking around the area near Holborn station on the tube.
G. B.
A beautiful, yet slightly pricey pub. A real conspiratorial vibe if you come in here with your pals when it's quiet, this is the kind of place Guy Fawkes would've come to plot the downfall of a government. Top quality food and very nice décor in the restaurant upstairs.
L. H.
One of my favourite London pubs. They know how to keep their ales. First rate service too. Not cheap but worth it.. Don't tell the tourists about this pub.
D. M.
Good selection of real ales at the bar, very good food upstairs in the restaurant.
Not overly priced given its London location.
Can get really busy in the early evening, the place is fairly small, so expect to stand in the bar area.
A. M.
Awesome little restaurant space. It has this old classy feel to it. The staff and service is great and so is the food menu. I've revisited it more than once!
H. A.
Small pub restaurant on the 1st floor with a cosy atmosphere. Even the cheapest meals were a bit expensive, but food was good. Modest options, Steak, fish and chips, steak and ale pie - standard pub food etc.
J. C.
Dinner and drinks here at the end of a historical pub crawl in the City. Good selection of ales, and decent food, but business was picking up during our visit, and staff came across as relatively indifferent to our party. Prices were London-high, so I came away wishing I had chosen differently.
C. A. M.
very good place, good people, good service, good food .. if you want to eat like at home. I recommend it
E. C.
Great atmosphere and is often busy after working hours. Good draught beers including guest ales on tap and a dining room upstairs. Very generous portions and delicious!
T. A.
The scampi and chips are awsome. Draught cider v nice on a summers night ❤️❤️❤️
B. H.
Great food, beer (real ale) not so good ... don't know what it is, but some pubs seem to be lager aficionados and have real ale on tap as a token effort
... so it rarely gets poured and tastes stale and yeasty. But saying that ... the food saved the day.
D. W.
Great hidden gem near Holborn. Nothing pretentious, just a decent cozy pub run by friendly staff. Good selection of beers to keep everyone happy. 🍺
S. R.
Small charming pub with upstairs dining room. Good service and staff. Tends to get busy and has traditional live music including jazz on Sundays.
S. S.
Great food, found it by chance, will be going back. Recommend it for a lunch time meal, the steak & Ale pie was the best, meal and a pint about £22.
D. A.
A really lovely hidden pub stowed just out of the way of busy streets. Well kept real ales, friendly service and good food. A charming atmosphere and really nice interiors.
A. T.
Great food. All our party had clean plates. The beef wellington was super. Good selection of beers and live rugby. What's not to like.
W. R.
Nice atmosphere, good range of drinks. The menu looked very appetizing if a tiny bit on the dear side.
P. D.
A proper pub in the heart of London. Good traditional ale and a huge variety of Gin. Jazz and a few beers on the Sunday afternoon is highly recommended.
C. B.
A fantastic cosy setting with a nice menu, very tasty food and good service (in the dining area upstairs). One of my favorites in London!
S. T.
Been coming here for years and years, still a great pub but needs quicker service.
Ales are well kept and he function room upstairs is still a fine venue.
P. H.
The thanks giving dinner was great. The soup was the best! The white was fantastic, buttery and smooth. The keep asked me to taste another white wine that was peppery with hints of plum.
B. S.
Great little pub, though not a lot of space when it is quieter its well worth a visit.
The upstairs restaurant is fantastic, very tasty food. Would recommend the Sunday roast or the pies.
N. O.
Extremely busy pub, very popular with the locals. There is a separate dining room upstairs with a great menu. Well cooked food with good portions.
K. A.
First time here, will definitely be back!
N. G.
Good, busy, old school pub. Very nice beer, decent service, and on a late Saturday afternoon, absolutely heaving! Oh, and ok for kids til 7pm (or 8 - I forget).
T. P.
We had the steak pie, chips, the hamburger and a toffy pudding. All were very good. Great atmosphere and helpful staff. Would absolutely come again.
O. C.
Great atmosphere if you can get a table and a bit overpriced rn
T. M.
I loved that massive fish and chips. Very traditional pub in Holborn back street since 1543(?). BBQ ribs are also yummy.
M. S.
A real gem if a pub. Not sure if I should mention it as getting a table on Friday lunchtimes is hard enough!
The pie is always the way to go, they do a stake pie that is unrivalled in the city. Go check it out!
C. C.
Kind Waitress and a great atmosphere. Good beer and dishes. But the stench of urine hit me when I walked into the ground floor.
I. D.
Tucked away behind holborn station.
It's busy but with good outdoor space to stand.
Good staff, great upstairs restaurant. Jazz on a sunday afternoon.
Looks and feels like a proper pub.
D. R.
Very nice pub, lively but not loud. The Old Fashioned was a bit on the sweet side, but that's no deal breaker.
M. W.
Superb evening enjoyed on Saturday. Staff were super helpful and service was excellent
M. M.
Good food and nice atmosphere
S. R.
Small pub on a side street with locals. Ship Tavern beer is a nut brown ale not unlike Newcastle. We had fish and chips and a meat pie.
J. S.
Lovely pub exactly what we were looking for. Tourists we met were lovely but locals very clicky and rude.
M. F.
We walked into a Jazz quartet playing in the main pub, into a fully oak pannelled interior, great decor. Lovely ambiance.
M. M.
Excellent pint of old peculier beer, very rarely available outside of North Yorkshire, friendly staff loverly bar food, well worth a visit
C. L.
Great Sunday roast, decent atmosphere and services from professional staff. A pub with a very long history that's well worth a visit
R. P.
Decent pub. Appears to specialise in gins of different flavours. Was a bit crowded when I went, but this is usual for pubs in this area.
T. D.
Great restaurant upstairs. Food and wine fine. Downstairs bar ok. Not a great selection of beers.
M. C.
One of the most tipical tavern, restaurants of Covent Garden. Allways full: previous reservation is recommended.
Nice old ambience and good food for an acceptable price.
M.
Food is fantastic, staff are friendly and attentive. Immaculate premises. Will be back for sure
R. R.
An old stand-by and great place. Last trip we went there with 12 guys, the service was great and we ate upstairs. The food was plentiful, and prepare great. Had a great time, with great service.
S. C.
Lovely pub with a good range of beers. Crowded but friendly. Convenient location.
M. W.
Cuisine quite similar to the Holborn DR at our hotel next door. But more traditional, and it's a nice break after having meals for several consecutive days at the Holborn DR & the Mirror Room.
S. H.
A nice little pub - small bar downstairs serving a good selection of drinks and some bar snacks all at reasonable prices
Very clean premises nicely decorated
Good friendly staff which is a bonus
They have a restaurant upstairs serving what looks like good food at reasonable prices - not yet tried the restaurant but have been told food is both tasty and freshly prepared
Didn't see any disabled access to the restaurant so if have problem climbing a flight of stairs it maybe best to check with the pub first to see if there is any assistance that can be given
Its a little out the way but worth going to
Pedestrianised outside so don't have to worry about cars when having a smoke
The place can get very busy even at weekends
I think they have jazz music on Sundays - certainly music on a Sunday when I have walked past the place on way to station
Give it a go you won't be disappointed
B. C.
First class service! Even put the heater on when we arrived, would highly recommend 👌
P. C.
Cracking little pub just off the main road, they have an upstairs as well where you can enjoy the privacy of having lunch, the interior is of the victorion age and has lovely features, overall lovely cosy pub.
C. C.
Oldie worldie feel to this pub. Staff excellent, food appetising and filling. Worth a visit if you're in Central London
F. L.
Steak pie was excellent and staff were relaxed and friendly.
B. S.
Great place to have dinner or just go for a drink. Nice, warm atmosphere. The food was well priced compared to the quality (and the quality was pretty good).
C.
Good food,
quick & professional stuff,
a bit noisy close to 20.00 but tasty & huge choice of Gin))
Downstairs is a bar, quite typical, crowded)
R. D.
I eat upstairs and have found the food to always be good and the decor is nice. One of my "most visits" every time I come to London, great fish and chips.
A.
Now my favourite Sunday lunch in London taking over from the smokehouse in Chiswick. Absolute hidden gem. In fact shouldnt say that else it will get more busier than it is!
S. J.
What a lovely old historical boozer right by Holborn tube. Great selection of real ales and the food looked really good, although we couldn't stop to try it.
P. B.
Beautifully maintained traditional pub with friendly staff and nice beer. The atmosphere is friendly and lively. Great place to go
S. W.
Nice range of real ales

Lovely pub, not always the friendliest, as so busy & I hate getting premium lager in standard pint glasses, but otherwise all good
D. B.
Love this pub. Great place to meet people when going out in London. Food is really good too.
N. N.
Excellent stop in for the quintessential London pub experience. Great food and service, live jazz some nights.
T. K.
Great spot for a couple of drinks after work. Tucked round the back of holborn station it has a good selection of beers and good food. Not always a place to sit.

Located directly on top of Holborn Station, this historic pub is a great place to have a quick pint on the way home from work.
C. G.

N.
Beautiful pub, will definitely return!
F. R.
Great little pub with a great atmosphere. Called for a drink after work on a Thursday evening and would recommend
B. M.
Very generous portions, a fantastic gin list and the best sorbet I think I'll ever have!
S. M.
Nice traditional pub with friendly staff. The food and drink were good and about average for central London
L. S.
Lovely to have live music on a Sunday! Would highly recommend. Also a great selection on gins botanicals
E. P.
The history of pub is intriguing. WhenKing Henry 8 ruled and when England broke from the church, Catholics would worship here in secret
G. C.
Excellent meal and great service and venue, a hidden gem in central London plus extensive Gin offering.
P. C. T.
Very well located and busy place after work hours. We use to visit this tavern once in a while and its quiet good but often is so crowded that you have to stand outside...
D. D.
Great food options and lovely little historic pub with historic features like stained glass. More formal dining room available upstairs.
M. G.
Nice historic oak panelled pub, the food is always good and they do serve a fantastic pork pie at the bar

J. M. R.
Go to this palace for the food upstairs. Great food and portion size in a small dining area. Would boom ahead. Large choice of wine and ale.
N. J.
Quality pub and lovely staff! Great quality drinks selection. Top marks!
S. P.
A decent little tucked away pub serving a range of different and guest beers. They also serve food, albeit I've not tried it.
A. G.
Small and out of the way. In one of the busiest areas of London. Nice friendly staff. A good variety at the bar.
C. G.
Beef Wellington was a special treat, well made, flavorful, served by friendly and attentive staff.

Tends to get very busy weekdays 5-9pm
Located adjacent to Holborn tube station.
H. W.
Didn't go in so how should I know? But it was busy, looked welcoming with seats in Cosmo Place outside, windows open etc. Quite welcoming intact.
E. W.

D. W.
Good beer and a lovely atmosphere. Can get very full but has an old timey feel to it
L. D.
Went here as part if a walking 'London Historical Pub Tour'...
Guide was great, ales were lovely and the history was amazing...
Ν.
Huge variety of gins, the atmosphere at the first floor takes you away at another time and place.

A very quaint pub, we didn't stop for food as we'd eaten beforehand, but seeing staff carrying fish & chips, wow the fish was massive and looked amazing, so we'll have to go back again and try their food.
J. L.
Great venue and location. Lager on tap needs attention but the ST is recommended of you haven't tried it
O. W.
Reliable pub in Holborn, an area which can otherwise be a bit lacking. Good bar snacks (sausage roll etc.)

D. M. R.
The history of English pub's began there!!

Quaint place with good service but the air conditioning was on full blast and being a mild day outside I was poorly dressed for the power of the a/c and couldn't stay.
O.
Great pub. Good beer selection. When I'm in the area I head here. Highly recommended

Nice beer and nice staff.
