Reviews of The Southwark Tavern

Great pub with good selection of beers including Camden pale ale
L.
The customer service was very good and on point. The pub had a family friendly environment. They had two-level upstairs and downstairs,. The price is very good too
n. f.
Very good steak and ale pie, and nice staff. Accidentally ordered 1.5x the amount of beer I had wanted, though, so be careful with their web...
G. A.
Popped in for a quick drink. Lovely pub. Loads of the Sheffield Blades lads in their on the way to Millwall Great atmosphere
P. P.
Nice pub near Borough Market. Really busy upstairs at 4pm on a Friday, but much quieter and cosier downstairs. We just had drinks. You can order online from your table and service was quite quick.
M. H.
Wonderful spot that we randomly stepped into for a bit of lunch, and to get out of the rain. Right outside of Burough market, they location was convenient but the inside was wonderful. Dark and classic, my kids said it looked like somewhere a Harry Potter grown up character would hang out at, if it wasn't filled with muggles of course. We went downstairs for a more quiet area to comment and warm up. Staff was friendly, food was good, would recommend for sure.
W. W.
Decent pub directly opposite borough market. Visited over the Xmas so was very busy inside meaning there was no space so we had to stand outside.
R. K.
Cute place, but gets really busy after work hours. I personally really liked the place, but had to share a table with strangers in order to get a seat. Not the worst thing in the world, and actually encourages you to meet/ speak to new people which in London, is a rare thing.
A. C.
Had a nice drink there last night. However, the barmaid completely ignored us several times, despite the fact that people were waiting at the bar to order. The poor barman was rushed off his feet and she just ignored everyone waiting. She tried to make herself busy collecting glasses, but it wasn’t convincing!
S. V.
Had a great lunch here yesterday, staff very friendly, if your looking for a quiet lunch this is not the place to go it was very loud, everybody felt the need to shout instead of talking, very strange. Having said that it didn't spoil our lunch the food was delicious
C. S.
Great traditional pub with reasonably priced drinks right on the edge of Borough Market. Really nice spot to sit outside with a drink and watch the hustle and bustle of London pass by.
S. E.
Great pitstop. Our electric bikes were loved by all.
Good service too
M. C.
Arranged to meet a friend here because last time I came the beer was varied, in good nick and the service was spot on. Same same. Fast and efficient and the first pint of draft Proper Job I've had in a long while was truly excellent
L. W.
Popped in for a drink after work... nothing out of the ordinary... apart from the EXTRAODINARY service from RICH. TWO DAYS into the job... so nice to be served by someone who is happy to be back at work, delivering wonderful and friendly service. Go RICH ⭐
S. L.
Great pub, great location, good selection of beers. Food was fab too. Staff were nice. Place gets busy due to location. Recommend
S.
Lovely cosy pub. Lovely staff. Best fish and chips I've ever had. So tasty. Everything was so delicious. Also very clean tables and safe environment.
w. t.
Busy and noisy place. Not much in draft but have some cask beers. Good for visitors to pop in for drinks as near to London Bridge or u can say just in front of Borough Market.
N. R.
Really interesting place to drink st. Very friendly staff and well served pints. Has a very authentic 'British pub' feel to it.
S. D.
Amazing place! I love the crypt tables and the fire place, very cosy and romantic! Also the baked camembert!! The staff are awesome also!
K. N.
Busy Saturday evening, called in for a quick one, Nice Guinness and 1/2 Peroni a bit over priced at £8.80. Nice bar staff.
H. A.
Lovely pub, great staff and service. Had a pleasant time and drink here with my sisters. Thank you xxxxx
C. D.
Best roast dinner in London! All perfectly cooked, all the extras that you need and a relaxed environment. Will definitely be coming back
N. G.
Great pub with good Ale's. Can be busy but good atmosphere.
D. S.
Nice traditional tavern. Fair selection of regular and craft beers on draught. Guinness was not good, but Ranger IPA great. Competitive prices and nice staff.
A. J.
A great English pub with a warm cosy interior. Good food and selection of beers. A great view of the shard. Highly recommended.
l.
Good atmosphere with some cool looking seating downstairs. Table service is good when ordering through the phone.
E. B.
Good Ale pub with unusual underground cellar seating with lots of little private spaces
D. I.
What a wonderful breakfast spot, we dropped by today just before 12 and wasn't sure if they were still doing breakfast. The staff behind the bar responded positively that yes breakfast menu was still being served. We both went for the full English breakfast 🍳 without black pudding and a glass of OJ. The food was cooked and served fairly quickly the only points that could have made it wonderful would be if the butter was a bit more spreadable and if they served better OJ. Overall a lovely atmosphere in this pub and certainly would consider heading back for breakfast again.
C. S.
We had a roast on a very rainy Sunday afternoon. The roast was good but the toffee pudding was microwaved and the ice cream was melted. The service was not great and the pub looked shabby. I wouldn't rush back!
L. D.
Great location, great food and service! Amazing Sunday roast!!!
P. S.
Was there a couple of days ago. Amazing beer, but 2 of the asked beers where not on tap, but they said they are. Cider is good, but not amazing. Definitely recommended for a cold beer.
M. O.
Cosy basements cellar seating, quintessential London pub. Worth a visit
P. R.
Mad crowd in the area compared to what I'm used too. Enjoyed the drinks and company. Order online and table service very good
K. C.
[Dec 2019] Quick drink before Borough Market. Had a very cheap, great tasting coffee. Plenty of beer available. Would visit again.
s.
Amazing place to go to! Make sure you grab a table downstairs:)
M. C.
Very busy market pub. Good selection of beers and ales.

❤️ Busy pub on the corner of Borough Market offering a good selection of beers and traditional pub grub. I visited with a group of friends on a pubcrawl and the service was quick considering how busy the pub was. A great place to drink outside and soak up the buzzy atmosphere of this great part of London.

Standard for a roast. But ask for more gravy from the off. They had run out of beef and whole chickens by late afternoon so that's a consideration if you don't like either ordering two half chickens (which they did have?!?) or pork.
F. C.
Oh my gosh this place is amazing. Staff has been SUPER friendly and professional and the food was THE BEST we have ever tried in a pub. We got to taste Nachos, dirty chips, smoked cheddar croquette and BBQ chicken wings ...and honestly I can't pick my favourite. I'll be back very soon to finish to taste the menu. Nice selection of beer as well, but they got me with food and service if I have to be honest!
Thank you guys!
P. M.
Only here for a couple of drinks but we had a lovely time. Service was quick and efficient. Right next to Borough Market, so a great spot to meet friends.
D. M.
Bartender serving online orders aswell as customers with speed friendliness and enthusiasm by himself only to be target by another disgruntled customer who couldn’t work a QR code what a joke ! I salute the the bartender get some more staff and give him a raise
I. W.
Took our Belgian friends to have cocktails at the Shard. No seats saw the view, left and found this fab bar. A round of drinks lesley than one drink at the Shard. Worth visiting. 😁😂
L. O.
I love this place. It is always busy, often nearly full but can usually squeeze as few in somewhere! The food is excellent and varied, the staff are hugely enthusiastic and knowledgeable and so often they have an amazing range of beers both from traditional breweries and craft breweries. One of the places visited by the London Bridge Terrorists, but you could never tell that now as they are always friendly, welcoming and will encourage you to try new things! Go on, it's always worth it!
N.
A great London boozer. Has got an eclectic range of drink especially beer and gins. Food is tasty but a little over priced. COVID rules and regs seemed fair and safe. Table service was ok.
M. B.
London vaab that doesn't bend the pocket. View of the shard outside is sick.
A. T.
Fantastic place food drink and staff are fab polite, and some cute 😍
D. G.
This is really quite a nice place to go when it's not super busy. The bar gets very crowded and the toilets are a nightmare!
The food is really tasty but the portion size is quite small for the price you pay.
Drinks are very well priced though.
I'd definitely recommend coming here for a drink after work but maybe not ideal for a date if you want to have an actual conversation.
A. K.
It's fiiiiiiine. It's a pub. In London bridge. If you like beer then this is the place for you. What do you want? A Nobel peace prize?!?
T. M.
The Southwark Tavern is a nice wooden pub to which I go every time I am in London. It has a great environment. The staff is always friendly and I really like to have food downstairs where you have a space with tables surrounded by individual booths. Great for small groups or solo visits with a book and a pint.
The food is very nice and well served. It gets busy on Friday evenings so I prefer to go Saturdays or Sundays for lunch.
C.
Very nice London pub.... check out down stairs for some very interesting seating operations.
I. B.
Great place if you like cheese.
P. B.
The best place in the area for a cold pint. Staff very friendly as always. Never really tried the food here to be honest, it's my go to place for a drink whenever I visit Borough Market. It can get quite busy on Saturday's and there aren't many pubs like this one nearby.
F. S.
We booked here for our staff xmas meal, the whole booking process through design my night was excellent and so straight forward. When we arrived we had a lovely lady look after us all, so helpful and friendly.
Food was excellent and all in all a very nice time enjoyed by all.
Pub in a great central location to close to Borough Market and the Shard.
A. M.
First visit October 2017 had a few drinks at the bar. Friendly bartenders and just a lovely spot. Came back for more drinks October 2018 and had drinks downstairs. Very cozy, next time we are back going to eat downstairs in the little rooms. Food looks great! Will update next year.
S. K.
Plenty of space not a great selection of beers, toilets could do with some attention.
D. F.
We were looking for a place nearby that had a Sunday brunch. You need to order your drinks and food at the bar and give them your table number. Did arrived quick and beer was given at time of ordering. Did was prepared well and tasty. We found the gravy sweet compared to what we are used to. The chicken was great and the beef was ok. Cost was 40 pound for two drinks and two meals.
D. S.
Bar staff and great and have a good laugh
j. y.
Grand little pub on the market. Food is good if you haven’t filled up while wander the market. Mosaic on tap is an easy drop and there’s plenty of tables to mingle around. Touristic as to be expected on Saturdays but still a relaxing place to lay low for an hour.
K. B.
Tricky one to rate. I went on a Wednesday evening, the pub is in a great location and has a brilliant layout and atmosphere. The problem was that when the pub got a bit busy the bar staff fell apart.
I was waiting for ages as they served new customers entering the pub, and believe me I'm no shrinking violet when it comes to getting a beer! The bar staff just weren't up to the job, and if you strayed off the standard drinks order they got confused.
So, would highly recommend the pub, just go when it's quiet!

Love it! Don't usually write reviews but felt this place needed it. After a poor experience with a member of staff the manager Mitch took full control of the situation and did her utmost to ensure myself and my parents enjoyed the rest of our visit. She is an amazing manager an a incredible asset to the pub. The entire time we were there we could see her handling everything with poise and professionalism. Only because of her will we return to the pub when at first it looked as though we were going to walk out now it's a place I will recommend. The woman deserves a raise and a day off. Big thank you to you Mitch. Your a star..n these 5 stars are for u. The food was great too.
B. O. B.
Great pub in a great location. A really good selection of beers. Love the downstairs for an evening with mates, but also love just popping in for a pint when passing. Haven't eaten here but the food I have seen looks good and well priced. Probably the best boozer in the area...
K. W.
Great service! All done via an app and prompt service to the table. All very clean and well organised. Helpful and friendly staff.
E. W.
Overall a very average pub. Booked table online and they didn't keep it for us; fortunately there were other tables available for us to take instead. One staff friendly, the others cold. Almost felt like they were doing us a favour serving us drinks and taking our money. Sharing platter unavailable and this was told in a most unapologetic way. Food was okay. Waited ages at the bar and watched as the bartender served later arrivals before us. Atmosphere a bit odd: lovely building and interior but the vibe inside just a little bit odd. Don't mean to be rude, but the customers inside were a little bit odd - not that friendly, one asked us to move table for their bigger group (there were other tables available downstairs she could have used but okay), and one chap commented at us when we were ordering some whisky that the Laphroig should be had after food and then walked off (we weren't even ordering Laphroig, mate, cool story). All in all, go to the George opposite for friendlier staff, nicer vibe and better food.
B. L.
Had some top nights in here, cool boozer.
A. T.
This is a decent pub that given its location obviously gets a big amount of passing trade from borough market. They have a decent selection of craft lager in bottles and on draft and cask ales as well. Staff were attentive and friendly. Toilets were disgusting though, I would not have like to use the ladies as if the gents were anything to go by they wouldn't be nice. Although I guess that's the fault of the people using them not the staff. Still worth a swift pint in.
N. A. E.
I love this pub, it's a lovely place to people watch and it's always busy - it's got a great selection of beers and it's a welcome respite from being on your feet around Borough Market. It's quite beautiful as well with wooden interior and traditional London stained glass in the pub windows.
S. F.
Well priced and food is delicious.
T. M. K.
Just next to Borough market it is a good alternative to have a seated meal or drink after visit in a traditional like English pub. Nice food, we enjoyed the salted beef sandwich. Fast service and lots of more space downstairs but in lunch time it wasn’t crowded.
R. B.
Interesting pub..there is only so much, fruit and vegetables, fish, and cheese and tasty comestibles, that a person can look at and appreciate in a day. And hence a visit to place ...while those who appreciate the finer points of walking around a food market wobble about. It was very welcome...the Doom bar was good, not sure about the eclectic collection of craft beers on sale, but i was happy to drink a well made well made beer.
V. D.
Quick service for a Friday evening. Most folk were standing outside and you could get some sun despite it being the evening. Views onto the shard. Didn't spend much time inside but seemed nice enough. Nice spot to go into if the sun is out and you want a drink outside.
M. J.
Cool pub with unique lower level converted cellar space into seating. Good beer list with a rotating selection of UK craft beers. Place can get crowded late at night, but the bartenders keep up well enough.
J. C.
Crowded, but good drinks, good food, and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and want to find a decent place to grab a drink or meet friends. Try some of the sharing platters... The best board and vegetable boards were really delicious.
M. D.
Great pub with some seriously decent beers on tap. Very tasty food to match. Best not take your own bottles of water in with you as it may get swiped, however, after chatting with the friendly staff we got replacements. Well worth a visit.
L. M.
Not busy at lunchtime Monday, food ok bar staff not the best.
P. H.
Good pub, great location, and very likeable beer selection. Very crowded on a Saturday night, which really wasn't surprising. Only complaint I have is about the music volume, which was just impossibly loud for any reasonable discussion. The same problem of course plagues numerous places, so nothing particularly special happening here in that regard. Just always annoys me a bit when in a place not really meant for dancing...
P. M.
nice little pub , helpful staff would visit again .
J. D.
Cracking pub with some nice little seats downstairs
L. D.
A nice pub with lots of alcoves for a more private feel downstairs. Very friendly bar staff with a good array of ales and draught beers on tap, the bar staff are very happy to allow you to give them all a taste of you so wanted. The food is pretty good in here also.
D. M.
Excellent service at the bar, which is particularly impressive because of how busy this place gets in the evenings. The only negative was the behaviour and attitude of the two members of non-bar staff who asked everyone to head upstairs a full 15 minutes before their own sign said that we needed to. Their attitude was appalling and they saw customers as an inconvenience, which is a shame because it's a very nice pub in most other ways.
P. C.
Had a really nice pub lunch. This is a nice old style pub in good condition, which serves what seems to be good pub grub. I had the steak sandwich and fries - really nice - best steak and chips I have had for quite a while.
L. D.
We had the most wonderful meal with friends last Sunday. My husband is vegetarian and I am vegan, and we can honestly say it was the best pub meal we've ever had. There were some really creative, interesting veggie choices on the menu - I had a creamy lentil lasagne with a side of chips, and my husband had the vegetarian roast with all the trimmings and a delicious gravy. We shared a vegan chocolate cake for pudding which was rich and decadent. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and booking a table was easy. Highly recommended!
M. M.
This is one of my favourite pubs in London Bridge. It has got a really good layout with a decent selection of beers at good prices. Does get very busy after work but well worth it for the Atmosphere. Bar staff are really friendly and do a good job of keeping track who is next to be served when its busy.
P. T.
Great pub with ample seating downstairs and booths too embedded into the old stone foundations. Though it does tend to get busy, there are always plenty of staff on hand so the wait is never too long. Prices are a bit steep but probably in line with the area
p. b.
Live and vibrant with great 'old' London surroundings. The staff are very friendly and there is a decent food menu. Although a bit pricey the cost is in line with local competition. The area does attract a lot of tourists especially in view of London Bridge.
S. P.
Very nice lunchtime pub with a good selection of mainstream and craft beers, which change frequently. Bar food is good quality traditional and there's usually plenty of seating, especially downstairs, where you'll find several private 'cells' ideal for small groups.
D. P.
Great pub good food good family pub
J. C.
Friday after work. Very busy. Good atmosphere. Interesting split levels and a number of little booths. Music not too loud until it was turned up at 6.30
S. F.
This should be a 3.5 stars as I did enjoy the food but without it blowing me away. The service was great, and all the team were helpful,.efficient and very nice. I started with Falafal with humus and salad. My falafal was a bit too crispy for my liking and felt I have had better off street food stalls. My daughter had chicken shish for main, which came with couscous and salad, which she enjoyed..i had the kofta on a bed of bread with tomato sauce and topped with yoghurt. I love this dish, and used to have it all the time when I lived in Greenwich at 'Sefa'. This version was good but not as good as Sefa's or as generous. However, the restaurant is in a great spot and the staff so tolerant. We were 5 adults, 1 teenager and 3 small children, aged 1 to 5, the kids ended up on the table playing mud pies, which made me cringe but the waiteres were, on the face of it fine. They even moved us as originally they sat our table next to a large hen party, and were so good about it. Overall a very nice restaurant and I would definitely go back.
A. H.
Was staying at the shangri la hotel in the shard and didn't fancy paying £70 for breakfast for 2 people , this classic pub is just round the corner and served a proper quality full English breakfast with 2 pots of tea for £20 . Food arrived quickly and was nice and hot .
Recommended if you are in the area !
A. F.
Very nice pub, food a bit hit or miss however
M. S.
One vegan option which was a quinoa burger that was tasty and filling. Nice selection of beers. Not cheap but this is hipster territory right next to Borough Market. Lots of nooks to have a quite drink on a rainy Monday afternoon.
J. M.
Oops. Gave this a 2 initially by accident. Good fun as allowed away fans in - no colours obviously. Staff shut down the couple of Coventry fan idiots who were trying to goad villa fans in a way that meant it all stayed cordial. Nice pint of Camden Wit poured too. Good location also.
D.
Great selection of ales and some interesting lagers, wonderful service, very good environment. Located next to Borough Market, so a very convenient hangout for drinks before and after your visit there.
Z. H.
Traditional pub with friendly staff and occasionally rotating beer selection. There's an outside area that is basically a pavement with stools, the ground floor is smallish and always packed and the downstairs has lots of small alcoves around the edges which will often be all in use. A good regular pub.
J. L.
Called in here, on a weekend trip to town.
It was a red hot day and we waited a few minutes for opening time, to get out of the sun for a bit.
Friendly greeting from the guy behind the bar and cold Peroni on tap, what more could you ask for?
I had a great Reuben sandwich and fries, whilst the wife had a fish finger sandwich.
First in, we sat at a small table in the middle of the floor, as the place filled up with a friendly crowd of locals and visitors and we were soon chatting to the people next to us.
We were sorry to leave. But, our time was limited. A gem of a place.
R. M.
Great pub for a stop off if you're at borough market or just passing through. It can get quite busy so expect to wait some time to get several. Services is ok, but slow. If you're a smoker and standing outside be expected to get hassled A LOT by the homeless.
C. W.
A little noisy but quite convenient to be able to order from phones
J. L.
Bar staff very friendly and helpful. Good food, and worked hard to help us find a gluten and dairy free choice (steak with broccoli). Also a nice gluten free pale ale too!
M.
Good location and selection of beers.
E. H.
A great pub for meeting up with friends with a wide selection of interesting beers. The food is solid, if not mind blowing, but the best thing is the staff. I've always found them to be among the best in London.
K. B.
Booked a table for 6 people at 7pm on a Sunday. A little disappointed when they'd run out of beef. However, the gammon was delicious. Our server Mitch was an absolute star and went out and bought us custard to go with our sticky toffee puddings. What an angel, thank you Mitch. We were seated in Cell 5, which was a nice cosy booth. Loved it. Thank you Mitch, wouldn't hesitate in recommending the Southwark Tavern to eat and drink.
M. G.
Was here the other night. It was a good place to catch up with some out of town friends, and had a good selection of beers. They should reconsider their use of straws in their drinks- there is a growing concern on single use plastics, and there are alternatives to these.
B. S.
Went on for the 1 pint. Pub was decorated nicely, service was quick and friendly, and the pint tasted great. It appears if you want to eat there, you need to reserve a table.
D. F.
Excellent been here a few times ,sit outside watch the day go by ,drinks excellent.
K. B.
Tricky one to rate. I went on a Wednesday evening, the pub is in a great location and has a brilliant layout and atmosphere. The problem was that when the pub got a bit busy the bar staff fell apart. …

Amazing place
N. S.
Good place for rugby world cup. Good selection of drinks including the obligatory range of trendy ales. Decent food.
J. M.
Lovely tables in the cellars below and adapted well to covid regulations
J. M.
Gateway to the South Bank when coming from London Bridge. Busy pub, good beer selection and decent food. Plenty of room to eat downstairs or stand outside for a quick pint. Probably not somewhere you're going to spend too long in, as there's plenty more to do nearby. As I said: gateway to the South Bank....
A. A.
Excellent selection of beers. The food is wonderful (tried the half roast chicken and the rainbow salad, both yummy). Also nice and cool inside in the hot weather.
J. C.
Crowded, but good drinks, good food, and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and want to find a decent place to grab a drink or meet friends. Try some of the sharing platters... The best board and vegetable boards were really delicious.
J. P.
The staff, so friendly, food excellent. I live locally so this is always a go-to favourite. Highly recommended.🤩🤩
J. W.
Bustling, noisy, Borough market boozer. Usually packed with City workers and London Bridge commuters. City prices on the beer. You'll either love it or loath it. Me I'm in the middle. Fast service is a plus. Loud is a minus.
S. M.
Great gastropub in Borough market. Make sure to book a table though and ask for a cell - these are super cosy private room/booths in the 2nd basement that used to be cells & still have iron bars. The Sunday roasts are really good here, but so is the regular menu. I recommend the black pudding hash cake and rainbow salad (yes they're technically starters but they're a fantastic lunch combined).
N. S.
Good place for rugby world cup. Good selection of drinks including the obligatory range of trendy ales. Decent food.
m. c.
the downstair area offers those little seperate booths which are perfect for meeting us with friends in a cosy atmosphere.
The price of the pints are slightly pricey, but similar to any pub in London bridge i assume.
I tried a burger there... rather dry. I wouldn't recomment this place for food.
E. B.
As far as all-round proper pubs go, I think this is the best near Borough Market. Service is usually great, decor is cosy, beer selection is sufficient and changes regularly, and it's usually possible to get a space even when it's busy
W. P.
Decent boozer on the edge of Borough Market. Has a downstairs area, mainly for eating. Good for standing outside, weather permitting. Usually has 4 to 6 cask ales.
A. W.
Solid pub - always crowded, but people shift out of seats quickly and service is usually quite fast. Wouldn't spend a whole evening here but always happy to drop in for a couple of pints.
N. M.
Possibly one of the cosiest pubs in the area, with a great selection of ales (so I'm told). Doesn't look great from the outside, but go straight downstairs, claim your own 'prison cell' and tuck into some fabulous seasonal pub grub. I'd recommend the bangers and mash. Yum! It does get busy when the offices shut.
M. H.
I'm not sure about visiting this place again. I went on a Saturday night a couple of years back and a staff member refused a transaction on a card only for me to pay it in cash. It turned out the card was charged in the end, so I and a mate lost both ways! The staff on the whole have been stroppy and unwelcoming and the beer is very pricy. Unfortunately, the regulars turn a bit threatening after a few, so I wouldn't really go back. My experience may be on a one night only, but I've been put off going there again.
L. O.
Lovely Old Pub. Service was quick. Pretty busy but we found a seat. Toilet needed cleaning. But enjoyed the atmosphere.
J. D.
A fantastic pub, and a real landmark of Borough Market. Allegedly, the small cells downstairs with tables in used to house convicts before they were hanged under the bridge.
Expect very long wait times when it's busy though.
G. H.
Enjoyed a few drinks with a group of colleagues after work, although near to London Bridge not as busy and unbearable as other places. Would recommend, and will return
I. F.
Great pub right on the corner of Borough Market. Only had drinks but the food did small amazing. Well worth a visit.
D. M.
Lovely pub. Reasonable prices and a great selection of ales!! WoulsWcoke back time and time again for sure. Try and get a 'cell' downstairs if you can as is much quieter and quirky!
A. P.
Nice London pub in a great location.
O. J.
Very enjoyable Sunday roast
A.
A pub's a pub's a pub. Unless it's the Southwark Tavern. Proximity to London Bridge and Borough Market ensure that, on a busy night, it's packed to the rafters, so be warned. Arriving at an opportune time, slip down the stairs to the basement and snag yourself and your party a private booth hidden under the cellar's brick arches. A great place to unwind with friends or a date.
P. C.
Good selection of beers and wines. Very busy most of the time. Has the advantage of generally staying open later than other pubs in the area. I love the cells, downstairs.
T. T.
Great pub, quite 'cozy' and very lively. The beer is good and staff are always welcoming . Nice place to go for a social drink with friends. Entertaining crowd too.
J. A. B.
Good ale selection. Decent staff. Never as busy as The Wheatsheaf or Market Porter around the corner, so nicer for a quiet pint. Good atmosphere on a Friday evening
B. B.
Typical tourist pub, located right next to London bridge. Drinks are fairly overpriced as far as London drink prices go (£11 for a glass of Rioja!) Ouch. Food, basic typical pub fare, nothing to write home about..
R. M.
good busy pub at the bottom entrance of borough market.
It has a changing menu. which has good fresh pub style fair and a rather good charcuterie board with deep fried capers (very lush), and also a surprisingly entertaining Tuesday Night Pub Quiz (though I believe they may have a rota of quizmasters).
For a fun Tuesday this is a good little location .
S. C.
A good pub to stop off in on adventures in the local area. With the shape of the bar and the staircase near the door it can get quite busy all of a sudden and then thin back out.
Try and get a seat downstairs in one of the 'prison cells.'
Brewdog Hop Friction on tap and one of the first places I had Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on tap too!
R. M.
Pints were nice, was in a rush when I drank here. Would like to have stayed longer, nice atmosphere and decent drinks. Price was expected in london
A. L.
Walked here after finding a lack of allergy friendly options at the borough market and was not disappointed-the best food I had in London! Amazing Bangers and Mash and Fish and Chips!!
A. H.
Good beer and snacks. Nice vibe.
F. P.
A good London pub. Ordinary selection of beers, (few quirky ones). Nice downstairs area - a good place to hang out in a group. Not rowdy at all.
A. F.
Good old pub in a great spot in Borough Market with great beers
D. D.
pretty decent beer selection, usually a few different cask options as well as more standard brews on tap. pretty tasty food, and some really cool seating options in the basement, which includes some converted prison cells.
j. l.
Nothing wrong with the service here! So don't mind the other reviews. Roast was satisfactory but not amazing, the price is decent for central london though. Was a nice place to relax on a hot day.
M. M.
Friendly service with a good Sunday roast on offer, although do go earlier as some roast items can run out .
T. S.
Great location near the market for a quick one!
M. D.
Great spot just next to Borough Market. Decent beer. Good service at the bar. Not tried the food.
V. M.
Can be really but that's hardly a negative point is it? Pretty good beer selection and a +1 for Blue Moon. Conveniently close to tube / rail stations and Borough Market, which makes it a nice place for a beverage.
R. V.
Very good pub serving great food, good wine and craft beers. Problem can be finding a free seat. The food is hearty and good value for money, great selection of ales, fruitbeers, weiss beers etc
C. C.
Good Sunday Lunch...tasty, hot fayre. Service was pretty quick considering it was busy. Liked the atmosphere and a good pint!!
a.
One of my favourite pubs. Great food, excellent beer and nice atmosphere.
P. H.
What a place if you have never been its a must
S. “. H.
The menu is vast - you can choose a few from the small plates which seem to be less pub more gastro. The large plates seem more like the typical pub grub. It can be difficult to get service at lunch time and the place was heaving with tourists. I went for three small plates in the end. Stout-cured salmon, lemon crème fraiche with toast was my least favourite - although freshly prepared it was far too salty and not well balanced. British sprats coated in linseed, quinoa and poppy seeds with smoked salt & vinegar mayo is just a posh whitebait. The best of the three was the pumpkin, kale and goats cheese croquette with green chilli & kale pesto - tasted good and it was a reasonable size too. To be honest, 2 plates was enough for me, but then I am only small.

Decent pub, many of the ales were off on my visit and service was a bit slow. However, there is a nice atmosphere and decor is that of a traditional English pub.
D. F.
Excellent been here a few times ,sit outside watch the day go by ,drinks excellent.
B. M.
Pub offered good food at the average London prices. Would have given a better review if the bar waitress didnt have an attitude.
J. H.
Great pub with lovely food. A really good place to take people visiting the area. The tables in the old wine cellar are particularly nice.
D. T.
Corner pub right next to Borough Market. Usually busy, more room downstairs! Good Sunday lunch. Friendly Staff and good beer!
A. M.
Nice pub for food and drinks near borough market. There are tables down starts and some really great nooks and corners for a date!
R. L.
Good beer selection a little cramped if your visiting in the winter but great in the summer as you can stand outside near borough market.
M. S.
My favourite feature is the seating booths located in each vault of the basement level which are pretty cool. OK range of ales but otherwise a very standard central London pub.
A. E.
It's a nice place to drink something after work or hard day. You can hang out with friends or have an intimate date. Each case it's great experience! I recommend it!
N. W.
Really excellent selection of cask and keg ales on tap. It tends to get very busy and alot of the tables tend to be reserved which is one of my pub bugbears.
C. G.
Don't postpone your happiness. In The Southwark Tavern I've found many friends and we now share common interests. Visit this place and make some new friends. And who knows - you can meet your soulmate there!
G. B.
Always a crowd outside for a good reason. Wide selection of drinks and a good basement space. Ideal for the summer evening al fresco beverage.
A. M.
Excellent bar, terrific food and great atmosphere! What more is there?? Amazing food, good service, good drinks. This place is another place we stopped in just for a drink, so no food commentary here.
M. P.
Loved the physical set up of the building, esp the 'cells' downstairs. Good food at reasonable prices. I would definitely visit again.
J. K.
We tried some beers in this pub. Nice atmosphere, delicious beers.

Lovely music choice.
W. H.
This is a great spot for drinks afterwork. Good selection of drinks. Can get a little crowded on summer evenings. But the bar staff dod a good job of keeping the drinks flowing.
M. R.
Good selection of beers and they also make a fine Bloody Mary ! Great staff for such a busy location.
C. I.
Very cool atmosphere, good drink selection, beers of the day, awesome staff and people
D. F.
Great atmosphere! Good selection of drinks and food is not bad. Sometimes beers might be boring. They would need a tad more selection
N. M.
Service always a touch slow. But great selection of beers, and nice - if not a bit noisy - place to meet for a post work catch up
O. J.
Good selection of beer, food is solid for a hearty meal. Becomes busy very quickly around weekends and kick out times
M. E.
Regular pub quiz attendee. Jason the quizmaster does an excellent job. Good selection of beers and a set menu.
N. P.
Lovely boozer and great beer
G. F.
This is the quintessential Borough Market boozer. Great for a pint while you get a raclette from the cheese place next door!
R. K.
This place is a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of Borough Market. I have fond memories of pulling up a comfy chair with a wheat beer to escape the weather
P. E.
Great selection of beers and extensive menu which I did not try. And with smokers standing outside seating available within.
c. h.
Great choice of beers and food was good too. Loads of seating downstairs. Prices reasonable.
J. P.
perfect pub fo the last drink , they close around 1 am
we came for a drinks with some friends after dinner and they were really relaxed , the only problem was the homeless outside but the staff deal with that really well

R.
Convenient location, always has some atmosphere. Busy on Thurs/Friday with many revelers, however still quick service and at a decent price!
J. e.
Good selection of beer it can get very busy after 5pm and you'll more than likely be standing however the service is still fairly quick
R. H.

P. L.
Nice pub, good beer. Didn't try food, but it looked good. Will be back.
A. H.
It was OK bit expensive if I recall.. bit dark and dim... The smallest toilets I ever seen you standing on top if each other at the urinals.... not a very friendly atmosphere from the energy in the place
S. G.
Ran out of roast on a busy sunday, they clearly dont like repeat business. Staff were good, obviously poor management on the part of the kitchen staff.
R. P.
Good little pub, had the feel of a locals pub which I liked. Good choice of beers, and I had a scotch egg which was tasty.
G. V.
Nice pub.
D.
Some great beers and packed only downside was the shattering glass - literally exploded, beer everywhere. Odd to say the least but apparently necessary.
N. S.
It's just a pub. If you've got a date - you might wanna find a place downstairs. Service is well mannered and efficient.

Pub that looks after the quality of the beer it pours and the people it serves.

R. M.
Downstairs is good for a chat and a pint providing the quiz is not on. Old prison with interesting small rooms in the basement .
C. C.
I think 3 stars is about right. If you go on the wrong night, id be giving it 2, problem is I couldn't tell you when a bad night is..... depends on the local workers and how pissed they want to get.
S. B.
