Reviews of The Starting Gate
A. M.
Great customer service. Very cosy and gorgeous pub! I was there on Monday and I was able to witness a bit of the Quiz that seemed to be a lot of fun. I will definitely be back again soon!
E. Q.
Really brilliant staff and service - friendly, professional and looked after my and my dog really well. Haven’t eaten here (yet), but I will do.
Had a beer aqua plane off the table into my lap, and the staff immediately topped it up and gave me lots of tissue to dry myself. Just attentive and genuine service.
S. E.
Good calamari... the only pub I've ever had it where I'm sure they were fresh. Basically amazing food. It's a decent gastro pub with a beautiful, ornate interior. The lack of ventilation in the bathroom is a bit off putting - and those bathroom taps that only work when you are holding them down... let the water run a bit so I can properly wash my hands! The staff are mostly warm and knowledgeable, they have a great range of beer and ales and a full, quality restaurant menu. They are dog and child friendly 😊🐩. Clean but cozy. Weekends get a bit loud with children running wild.

The pub was lovely and the food was delicious. We came in on Sunday Roast and Helen was our waitress for the day she was really friendly and we had a nice chat. She made sure we were taken care of and gave us very nice suggestions of what we can have from the menu. We will be back for sure!
A. S.
Really nice spot close to ally pally. Quite a big craft selection and some vegan options on the menu. Table service really fast and efficient. We had a great time being here on the weekend and will definitely come back. Thank you you to our waitress Justyna for the the recommendations and service.
J. J.
Excellent meal👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👏👏👏. In a very nice pub.Never had or heard of a sharing roast before. Everything was beautifully cooked and presented.
J. S.
Great place, lovely public, nice servants. Had an alright Pork belly Sunday roast. Nicely portioned. And some likable selection of beers. 🤗
S. T.
Nice place to grab some food and a drink after a long walk, dog friendly with decent prices and portions. Good service, thank you Justina. Will be back for sure!
J. Z.
Was in here yesterday, haven't been in for years! It's changed so much. I had some lovely falafel for lunch and just thought what a nice little pub it is. The staff especially, a lady called Amber served me and we had a good chat about the pub building and how old it is, and she was excited to be decorating it for Christmas. I will definitely be back for drinks again!
J. G.
Beautiful watering hole. So many original features and a gorgeous bar. If you like your pubs open and spacious this is a pub for you. Didn't eat but food looked good. Dog friendly too.
Right outside the station! Caught my eye immediately.
Great service and good selection of draught beers.
A. C.
Whilst the initial experience was welcoming in terms of service and quality of beer the music was too loud and the staff appeared to create their own entertainment outside of the service arena.
D. M. D.
A lovely place a sunday afternoon. Friendly and welcoming staff, clean and comfortable surroundings.
Would have given 5 stars but the roast potatoes were not good and was missing the stuffing with my roast dinner. The rest of the food was tasty and well prepared
M. S.
Came in for Sunday lunch. Staff made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in, very friendly. We had the sharing roast board, it was delicious. Was a shame the caramel torte wasn't available for dessert, but I did enjoy the lemon tart. Enjoyable experience all round.
F. R.
Not tried the food but decent pub, good service.
We went on a night when there was loud music playing so if you're looking for a chill drink or meeting up for a date you're probably better looking elsewhere if you don't want to be out in the garden.
M. G.
Lovely place. Tasty food, amazing customer service aspacialy Maggie makes u feel like you are family. Close to Ally pally perfect for drinks before and after gigs.
R. T.
Came in this afternoon to grab a bite to eat for lunch with a couple of friends. I had the behind meat burger and it was sublime, they scotch bonnet sauce was so good!! Great drink service. Very attentive and delightful service from Liam. We will definitely be back again soon!
E. T.
Had a lovely time! The place was packed but we were looked after from the staff impeccably!
Helen was our bar woman and she was lovely serving us drinks!!
T. W.
Came in for a meal with my wife this evening. Service from beginning to end was outstanding, levels above our previous visit a few months back. Bravo to the management for the improvement, we will definitely not wait as long to come back next time
M. G.
Friendly staff, decent prices, well-kept ale (I had a couple of pints of Dark Star Hophead) and a traditional interior. Will be back if in the area!
S. B.
Nice traditional pub. Vegan sorbet pudding was great. My friends chicken skewers with yoghurt didn't have an yoghurt with it, and my olive starter came at the same time as my main. But the mains were all really tasty and the pudding really was good!
V. M.
Sunday roasts quite small and cost £17.50. Very good drinks selection including real and craft ales.
K. D.
We had very delicious branch here, very cosy atmosphere.
There is different alternative food bit like a gastro pub,
Very good selection of draft beers.
Foot was very testy service was fast and friendly.
This place animal friendly as well
A. K.
I didn't eat there but had some drinks. The atmosphere was nice and unobtrusive. The service was great. If in the area again I will try the food as it looks good.
A. B.
Lovely meal here yesterday, fish and chips were delicious, nicest mushy peas ever! The Nourish Bowel with chicken was also excellent.
r. g.
Visited the pub and I can recommended it as the best place to chill, have good food and a pint, superb service big shout to Maggie for taking the extra mile.
L. E.
Decent local with some ales on hand pump. Well kept in my experience.
The plastic glasses cos football on ? Bit of profiling would assist.
M. J.
Came in today and sat on table 11 for a meal with my partner a very lovely old style pub with a very friendly and attentive waitress called Amber, she recommended the fish and chips, food was great 👍
K. M.
Visited the pub and was so pleased
Lovely atmosphere and amazing service a specially big thanks for Maggie
We will definitely visit again ❤️
K. G.
What a gem! I had the roast chicken (half). It was juicy, tasty and fell off the bone - delicious. Was meant to come with rosemary flavoured chips, but I think I got normal ones because I couldn't taste the rosemary and they looked the same as my friend's. Never mind though because it was still a cracking lunch. For starter, I had the deep fried Camembert - yummy! My bf had the vegan option and really enjoyed it. Definitely worth a visit 😊
M. M.
Decent selection of beers in this traditional wood and cut glass fixtures semi circular bar. Food is standard. Burgers in brioche, pulled pork shortcrust Pastry pies, fries and pointless wilted watercress garnish. Tasty but I don’t like how the receipts only give you a total and no breakdown of what you have just bought.
H.
Went there yesterday for a Sunday roast. The atmosphere in the pub is great, it is nicely decorated, clean, not overcrowded. The roast was very tasty, very generous portions. Very friendly staff. There is also a little outside space which is nice. Lucky to have this pub in my neighbourhood.
F. B.
Lovely service, the chips were cooked to perfection, so crunchy and fluffy, the chips were a hit! But incredibly dry burger patties...they are pre-cooked, I couldn't choose the meat term and was told all are well-done, all the juice was gone by the time it got to my table. I paid £21 between the burger and a cider, I must admit it was a little painful to pay.
I have read their reply and stand by what I said about the burger. Wouldn't recommend it but I am not writing reviews to be harsh and have added 1 star.
R. E.
Absolutely top notch. Love the range of beers too! I highly recommend this pub.
A. H.
Fantastic pub! Came for a drink before heading to Ally Pally and had a great time!
T. C.
Grate pub, love the atmosphere and very friendly stuf big thanks to Magie who made our visit special ;)

A. H.

D. E.
Nice selection beers. It has a little garden and its opposite Alexander Palis Train station. Can get crowded.
J. S.

Good vibes and delicious rhubarb cider.
A. D.
Loved justyna and Amber and Helen and zara and mirrelle and Alex and the whole team was amazing thanks for a great night 😗😁
O. S.
Popular pub in Wood Green, not bad bangers 'n' mash
P. M.
Love this place. Always just busy enough to have a nice atmosphere but still able to get a table. Nice drinks, good food, board games available, little beer garden out back and fab offers like this one on Wednesday. Don't need much more than that.
P. P.
Great Sunday Roast and excellent service. Felt well looked after.
O. G.
Nice place to grab drinks with friends, staff very friendly and attentive
S. B.
Great place to grab a drink before heading up to Ally Pally! Place was buzzing!

Always enjoy stopping in here on my lunch break, steak sandwich is tasty! Great service and banter from Sim and Liam as it usually!
D. L.

A. G.
LOVE the new cocktails!! I will definitely be back soon for more espresso martinis!!
B. R.
Cosy pub with friendly staff and decent beers
J. G.
Perfect spot to grab a few well earned drinks after a walk around Alexandra Palace, friendly staff as always.
A. T.
Best craft beer selection in the area and a great pie!
K. D.
Booked a table for England's semi-final and so glad I did. Had the BEST night and all of the staff were so patient and incredible - gutted I missed out on a table for the final! Will definitely be back soon
S. C.
Great place to stop for drinks before heading on to alexandra Palace

Great location opposite Alexandra Palace railway station, good seating areas and friendly staff.

Thank you Maggie, Justyn and Kamila for making a good pub grate!
C. C.
Great service from the staff. Well presented food and drink. Clean toilets.
K. S.
Fantastic local boozer with great staff & food selection
A. E.
Lovely pub to have a drink, with great music, food and atmosphere. The service was fantastic! Simeon, the barman, was friendly, chatty and genuine and made you feel at home. He knew his drinks well and we enjoyed our experience. We will definitely be going again and recommend you go and enjoy.
J. R.
Came in here today for a family meal. Hadn’t been to the pub in years. We very much enjoyed ourselves. The food was delicious, cracking Sunday roast. Drink selection was really good too. Might not leave it so long before coming back next time
C. H.
Just a great pub. Good food and drinks, can't ask for much more.
P. '.
It’s a surprisingly big pub with a small but a lovely beer garden in the back.
I’ve came here a few times and it’s always clean and neat with a wonderful aroma of mulled wine at the moment when you enter.
The staff are always extremely friendly and attentive and take good care of their customers, by giving a fast and a steady service.
Their range of drinks are good too , especially for the whiskey lovers.
Their food are tasty too , especially their burgers and their cod lunch meal .
Both drinks and food aren’t the cheapest but it’s reasonable and you’ll leave the place feeling satisfied.
J. C.
We had the Sunday roast and several desserts. Amazing quality and lovely and helpful staff
C. M.
Very nice pub and good choice of beers, where to spend some nice and relaxed time with friends. Food is on the good side and covid regulations are followed to the letter while still providing a nice environment, a smile and a good service.
Thank to all the staff
H. W.
Great pub, please clean the toilets more often. Good selection, pricey though.
D. C.
Headed here after work a few times. There's always space and a good selection of drinks & food including veggie options
H. M.
Sim and Alex really looked after us, lovely service
H. W.
Good service and venue and friendly staff. Very nice location.
p. b.
Great atmos. Friendly staff suuuperb music
D. D.
Great place to visit before a gig at the Alexandra Palace turn left from the station
N. S.
Nice pub with good selection of beer but had to cancel our food order after 30 minutes of waiting when told out would mostly take another hour of so to arrive. In their defense they did just have a large amount of people order at the same time but it would have been nice to be influenced about the long wait. Beer I ordered was also past drink by date.
S. R.
The staff are awesome
The food is amazing!
Plenty of choices of beverages
Dog friendly too!
10 / 10
L. C.
Lovely vibe and atmosphere ,excellent service. Thank you Maggie
A. W.
The Starting Gate is a great pub located opposite Alexandra Palace Station. It's got a good atmosphere and a decent amount of seating for its size. When it's jam packed it's less enjoyable (and drinks are expensive), but as far as pubs go it's the best in the area. Could also do with some more vegetarian options on an otherwise very good quality menu. It's definitely not just your standard pub grub
T. C.
Had a lovely time, thank you to host of the night Maggie!
H. V.
This mine and my colleagues regular wine stop after work. The staff are always amazing and attentive. The drinks are always to the highest standard and we’re loving the new summer drinks!! Already looking forward to our next visit!
N. M. G.
Interesting building and friendly staff who gave my friend's dog a bowl of water. About £9 for a medium-sized glass of white wine and a half of cider. Was meeting a date there for the first time so wasn't checking the place out more. Sadly the usual broken toilet seat in the gents despite the money it must turn over. Why are so many pubs like this?
Since the pub's reply I've reluctantly added the photo. Slightly loose?
D. W.
A great venue. The decor is quirky and the loos are a joy. The food was very good too and reasonably priced - it was 'Burger Monday' (the salt beef and sauerkraut burger was divine). The young man in the baseball cap who served me a pot of tea when I arrived was solicitous and friendly. Such customer service makes a huge difference.
P. B. F.
Entered the pub and the barman despite being I'm sure and friendly guy was more interested in talking to a friend (who arrived after I did) than serving me a drink. Ordered food which arrived cold and had to wait about 10 minutes and remind (same barman as earlier) that we would need cutlery to eat our food. Many places to go so why waste your time and money here?
N. B.
Excellent pub. Great vibes, good music and welcoming staff. Coming back soon!
A. M.
Well produced dishes. .I had the pie with mushrooms which had lovely light and crispy pastry. Fair selection of ales including a lovely very hoppy one and a good little selection of very drinkable whiskey. Decor is traditional pub style. Clean and very handy for the train and bus - both right opposite. Food needs to be ordered and paid for at the bar - staff only come to your table to bring the food. Would go again.
A. “. U.
It's a great pub but it is bloody expensive!! Good beers and a wide variety but be prepared to pay! They are undoubtedly taking advantage of the Ally Pally resurgence. The toilets are shocking too but it genuinely is a good pub apart fro. those two things!
A. A.
Lovely pub with great food.
Perfect for lunch or afternoon drinks
J. S.
Just a pub near a station - not bad not great....just a pub
S. K.
Nicely decorated pub, went on a Tuesday afternoon and it was pretty empty, staff were nice but not overly bothered about clearing our table (it was just two of us and my baby). They had the patio doors opened and as they are on a fairly busy road it got quite dusty and loud with the traffic building up for rush hour. Food was ok, nothing special, a lot of things on the menu were not available "due to the bank holiday" !?! They do have baby changing facilities which was clean enough but a little tight. I wouldn't return.
O. B.
Great service. Food a bit pricey but is worth it as is a elevated pub food. Amazing place for a better diner than a normal pub
B. M.
Great original old pub, apart from not having a few real beers really good. Lively, noisy, great atmosphere. Young freindly staff. Pub grub. Good service.
J. S.
Comfortable sofa’s and decent music
Nice atmosphere
P. G.
This is a very nice pub located opposite Alexandra Palace Station and named in reference to its proximity to the starting line of the former Alexandra Park Race Course. The interior features preserved wall hangings depicting Alexandra Palace along the north wall of the bar.
It does get incredibly busy when there are events at Alexandra Palace and on Friday evenings and weekends, which is the main reason for not giving the pub a full five stars.
The menu is fairly priced and the quality of the food is good.
The range of drinks is very good with several well kept ales. There are also craft beers served on draft and a range of wines and spirits.
The staff are very attentive, friendly and helpful, even during busy periods and dealing with the occasional obnoxious customer.
This pub is well worth a visit in the area.
B. T.
Had my first taste of a "Beyond meat" burger here. Food very good. Standard selection of bears and wines for a pub.
J. L.
Came on Sunday afternoon without a reservation for table for two - they were very accommodating and seated us quickly. Had the lamb roast and a craft beer - both excellent. Recommended.
I. S.
Beautiful building in great location. Picked this place out of convenience to meet some friends on the Saturday afternoon after walking up to Alley Palley. I was very surprised with the beauty of the place. Perfect for a chilled drink and a catch up with friends. Cosy and warm. Staff were friendly and efficient.
We didn't have any food but people were definitely going there for a meal and it all looked pretty decent!
There's games available and an outdoor space if you fancy some fresh air.
We had a really good time. Thank you!
J. P.
Fantastic bloody Mary to kick off a very tasty Sunday roast. Staff were helpful, diligent and friendly. Food was very tasty and we left with empty plates. Yorkshires were huge too. Would definitely recommend and will return.
V. K.
Nice pub. Good beer selection. Paid for it using contactless. Half an hour later wanted to buy more drinks but been told they accept cash only. Had to go away as had no cash on me. We can't rely on the technology all the time. Cash is still the king.
M. M.
Popped in here for a quick pint before heading up the hill to Alexandra Palace for a gig. It was absolutely heaving, however the staff were really efficient and I didn't have to wait too long to get served. It's clear that on a less busy day that this would be a very nice pub.
E. G.
I booked this place for a Sunday lunch for 14 of us, and I booked them based purely on the Google Reviews. Now I know why they were so good. The service was spot on, as the pub was already busy, and the Sunday roast was one of the best pub roasts that I'd ever had. We'll be back.
I. S.
Me and a few colleagues regularly like to pop in on our lunch break. The sandwich and a drink offer is such great value, and the food is always top notch. Must say I am loving the new sandwiches! Lamb kofta wrap is the one 👌
G. S.
An 'old style' London pub with many original features: acid etched glass, decorative plasterwork and woodwork, plus it has retained the island bar in the centre. Excellent food and good choice of beers. Dog friendly too.
c. o. r.
This is s good local, right opposite the station and close to bus stops. Plenty of drinks, food, guest beers, spirits etc and the staff are helpful but occasionally very busy when crowds from the events at Ally Pally descend after the shows. Luckily there is a little green area adjacent where you can stand or sit outside - popular in summer and you can take drinks out there - it is very family friendly even allowing young ones in for Sunday lunches etc. Overall very good.
J. T.
Good beer selection - including local real ales. Friendly. Bit too big for an intimate night out but really good if there are lots of you. Also decent if you you've children along.
C. V.
Come for the atmosphere- not the food. Beautiful pub, Victorian style bar, very pretty inside and good selection of drinks. We live locally and came for the Monday burger offer. I couldn’t even finish mine as the quality of beef was so gross. Bit into a huge piece of gristle. In 2018 when us snowflake millennials are used to Patty & Bun and Bleeker burger, you can’t do a Principal Skinner and buy grade F meat. In summary, I would say not a place to come and eat, but definitely a good place for a bevvy before a gig at Ally Pally or a drink before/after walking around the park. SORT YER BEEF.
A. S.
Great food and wonderful range of gins! We had a lovely evening.
A. L.
Lovely pub, lovely staff and a nice selection of beers you can try. The pub itself is beautiful inside and out and close to the beautiful Alexandra Palace. There’s also games and an outdoor bit, and dog friendly.
S. H.
I come here regular to stop off for a drink whilst taking my dog for a walk. Usually Sim is working and he always looks after me and my dog, brings over water an treats every time and gives him a good stroke and has a nice chat with me, never felt so welcome in a pub before
T. W.
Really good pub! Spacious layout with a nice centre bar, great choice of food/beer, and friendly staff!
Plus it's right outside the station, which can be handy!
C. R.
Tables could of done with a wipe down. I looked for a clean table and they all needed cleaning. I don't mean to nit pick, but there were only 5 people in the pub us being 2 of them. So not busy.
Staff were very friendly though and love the feel of the pub.
S. A.
Great lunchtime sandwich offer always good selection of beers
M. H.
Great welcome, dog-friendly, lovely food and drink. An all-round pleasurable experience.
G. M.
I have to give The Starting Gate 5 stars as we (my hubby and me) had a great Easter Sunday lunch at a very good bargain price. Three courses for £20, amazing and equally amazing is the food, as usual was to a very high standard with very good quality ingredients. All of this was topped off with very friendly and helpful staff. The Starting Gate is setting high standards of local dining for Wood Green and the surrounding areas. Keep up the great work.
Gerard & Alan

Ate at the starting gate on a busy Saturday, service was really great considering how full the pub was. Their drinks selection is also really impressive, lots of beer choices.
r. l.
Nice staff, great beer, what more could I ask for?
S. O.
Lovely local with a good set of menus (brunch, main, roast) depending on the day. Service is friendly enough. Can get busy on Ally Pally event days, but otherwise it's usually not so packed that you can't find a seat and get served quickly.
S. C.
Came in yesterday for a family catch up. Food and drink were lovely. Staff were friendly and helpful, even turned the music down for us when we asked. Would definitely recommend
A. R.
My favourite local pub. Good selection of bears and nice atmosphere. Recently I finally tried the food. Sausages and mash were delicious, fish and chips good. I highly recommend this pub.
M. Z.
I've lived a stone grow away from this place for over 14 years and never been there. I finally visited, as it was convenient for a friend who lives near Enfield to come over and stop to see me near Alexandra palace one afternoon. Oct 2018. I was pleasantly surprised how fancy, a little bit posh and well kept this pub was
So points for bro g conveniently located. Apparently they do nice pizza. I will report back when I go next tom3, to try it. Stone baked, I am told. Definitely worth a visit. I would reccom3nd as stopover.
Friday night looked like you need/ should book a table for larger groups. Really nice and cosy pub. That night quite young crowd. It was nothing but a pleasant surprise.
Do go and try it if you ever in the area.
A. D.
Lovely food and great service
T. R.
Very nice for quick pre-alexandra palace pub lunch. Menu has been improved since last visit when it was then essentially ham egg and chips, bangers and mash, and fish and chips, but the quality remained good and not outstanding for a gastropub. Katsu curry burger needed much more punch than a weak streak of katsu sauce to recommend it. Chips tasteless. But it remains nice surroundings and friendly staff and a quality pint.
N. R.
Popped in here before the King Gizzard gig at Alexandra Palace and was a great pub. The staff were first class, service amazing and the selection of drinks was great. Didn't eat but the food looked amazing !
E. W.
Great pub, food is all tasty and of a good standard. The beer is reasonable prices for london. Has a small outside area to smoke, toilets are clean and tidy.
N. B.
Nice food, good atmosphere, reasonably priced
A. T.
Great pub and my favourite in the area but can anyone tell me when they are re-opening? Their sister pub the Ranleigh has been opened for a while but the Gate is still closed.
H. S.
Great pub for a pre-gig beer or 5 if you're on the way to Alexander Palace. Went here with a group and enjoyed several pints of good local/varied ale amongst a friendly atmosphere. Dog friendly I noticed! Short walk to Ally Pally to continue the evening afterwards but I shall certainly be back 👌
A. R.
Amber is the best, nice service and very polite🤩🤩🤩
M.
Nice cosy pub with friendly inviting staff.
Dogs welcome which is a great bonus.
Will update review once I have tried the vegan menu.
S. M.
Always a great selection of rotating beers and ales. Food isn’t too bad either. Good pub to have as your local.
J. T.
Came here for the Artnight. I've been to a few Artnights and as much as I enjoy them, the venue and service doesn't always match up. However The Starting Gate does! Incredible staff, that provide incredible service. On top of that there is a great food and drink selection
T. W.
A pretty cool Victorian station boozer with attractive windows, high ceilings, modern extension and outdoor courtyard at the back. It loses 2 stars because on one of the hottest days of the year I ordered a bottle of Peroni and they sold me a bottle of gluten free Peroni (I queried this and was told, with a shrug, that it tastes the same) which was not cold. It was below room temp and cool but certainly not at all cold. If a pub can’t serve cold lager then all of the rest counts for very little.
J. N.
I had a grate time. Thank you Maggie for all the effort.
U. 7.
Was only supposed to pop in for one to wait for a train but stayed til kicked out (1am on a sat night). Classic pub, full of wood, great seating and great beer selection, thoroughly recommended
B. T.
Sort-of my local, come here more than many pubs in my area. Good music, friendly staff, and the food is always satisfying. Has a great atmosphere since the new management have improved it. A great meeting point or place to relax!
M. D.
A very nice looking pub with a good selection of drinks and food. They seem to have a lot of events and ample seating indoors. Unfortunately, it gets quite crowded on a Friday evening, especially when there is a show in Alexandra Palace.
j. r.
Lovely local. Great staff and good food. Would definitely recommend if you were passing by and wanted a bite to eat with your pint.
R. B.
Nice traditional London pub. Small selection of real ales, Snacks and food menu. Dog and child friendly (normal rules apply). Nice and relaxing atmosphere.
J. P.
Cosy pub with comfortable seating. Good selection of food with great roasts. Staff are very helpful. You might participate in the quiz if so inclined! Hope to be back soon!
L. B.
Fantastic pub near Alexandra Palace. Lovely service throughout, food and drinks were amazing! Team having fun also good to see, would definitely visit again when I'm in the area!!
A. C.
Proud to call this my local even though I don’t visit nearly enough. It’s such a gem of a pub: lovely roasts, drinks and interior. It brings a little charm to my morning every time I walk by it on the way to the train station.
T. R.
Decent pub that's a great starting point next to the station for a few drinks before a gig up the hill. Just wish they had a few more staff on gig days to reduce the waiting time!
J. C.
Popped in for a bevvy and to visit my old stamping ground, looks a lot more upmarket than I can remember back in the day! They also do food that looks very appetising. Maybe I'll pop back next time I'm reminiscing and try some.
J. C.
The pub has a nice electric mix of areas for eating and drinking, the staff are friendly, but the food is very disappointing. We had Sunday roast a year ago and remember it being very nice, today it was a awful greasy mess with just 2 small over cooked greasy vegetables (battered carrots that had obviously been sitting in oil a long time and overly buttered cabbage), 4 tiny potatoes the size of the end of my thumb that were a soggy greasy mess and under no circumstances roasted. The gravy on the plate was more grease than anything else, the stuffing ball was pink, the only thing that was ok was the quarter chicken, but no breast in sight. Gastro pub prices and descriptions but that don't live up to their billing. There should be at least 3 vegetables of reasonable portion size, at least a handful size of proper roast potatoes and decent gravy. Too heavy handed with the oil and butter. Won't be eating Sunday roast here again unless they sought out the "chef".
N. U.
Ended up here after going to Ally Pally, was a cool pub to sit in! Decent range of beers and the staff seemed friendly enough, as did the other people in the pub.
T. D.
Great English pub in London. Local vibe, good crowd and great beer. Pizzas are ok, but watch out for the silver haired geezer called Geoff, he'll charm the pants off your missus and nick your beer!
S. D.
Popped in here when between trains, very convenient location to the station. Staff very accommodating. Had a glass of wine with a salmon sandwich. Both were divine.
L. L.
I was positively surprised. Picked this pub purely out of convenience (right opposite Alexandra Palace Station) and had really low expectations. Turns out this is a really nice and cozy pub with decent food options.
A. R.
Stopped in here before a gig at Ally Pally recently. The guys behind the bar do such a great job. Hundreds of people pouring in, yet still only waiting a few minutes to be served
J. B.
Had a lovely visit, great service from Alan!
C.
Extremely nice place to go for a drink , food or both!
Everyone serving makes you feel at home along with a nice variety of options!
The actual building is one to remember!
A. P.
The Starting Gate has been completely remodeled, and so any review from more than 2 months ago is obsolete.
I have been to the new Starting Gate 5 times so far, and have always had a great time. Good selection of beer, comfortable seating, good food. Definitely the best place in Wood Green.
C. W.
This establishment stocks many non standard beers, ales and spirits. One of the few places that serves Delirium. Excellent.
M. H.
Very nice place. Good place to meet mates and had a good evening.
O. I.
Good selection of beers but the lovely food is what brings me here. Try the scotch eggs. They really should lose a star for taking the duck paté off the menu though...I'm going to start a petition lol
S. B.
Great original atmospheric pub yet cosy enough for a small get together. Sunday roasts are very special. Highly recommended.
S. W.

s. g.
I found this place a little bit pricey and very busy. There were no seats available and wherever you tried to stand you were in someone way.however all that being said a good place to go local before Alexandra palace and played good music.
P. W.
Conveniently located by the railway station.
Pleasant staff - nice pub
K. T.

Have fish dishes available more often and always have ALL the ingredients!
Sometimes you don't put all the ingredients on the plate because you don't have them in!
Sorry!

Beautiful looking pub. Nice for a drink but menu overpriced for quality of food. Also, too many children at the weekend.
T. N.
Very good since the change of ownership and management. Pretty interior and food quite good also. Very welcome in an area where pubs aren't great.

There was clearly an event on nearby, but the bar staff decide randomly who gets plastic and who gets glass, which isn't great from a customer service or a safety point of view.
J. G.

C. B.
Beautiful building lovely staff.... my only beef is they only sell really bitter lagers when all I really want is a carling or fosters.
