Reviews of The Surprise, Chelsea
D. T.
The Surprise is no surprise, perhaps the most leaked secret in Chelsea. However, the Surprise is none the worse for that! A lovely pub with a fine atmosphere. Good beer from the keg and the cask. There is also a decent menu with options for most. Service is brisk and friendly, what more could you ask for. A most enjoyable place for a beer.
A. G.
The Surprise, is a beautiful pub in a perfect location. From the outside it is adorned by elegant striped shades and wooden benches, perfect for a Sunday drink. Unfortunately the food was very disappointing. I had the Sunday lunch, roast beef, which was two slices of terribly overcooked, gray meat. I'm astonished how many great pubs can't do medium rare beef. i don't know why this is too much to ask. Rest was pretty ponderous, heavy potatoes, no hint of a crunch or a crisp, parsnip puree which was identical to wallpaper paste and I've forgetten what else was on the plate. A real shame. Nice service though.
Plus I do hate when there are TVs on and noone wants to watch them, they just distract you.
J. W.
This is my favourite pub in London. The staff are so friendly and very polite. The food is unbelievably good….was there last night in their beautiful private dining room, which in itself is a serious treat, food delicious extensive wine list, lovely staff. What more could you want! Will go back as often as I can….can not recommend it highly enough! Jane xx

Lovely evening in a bustling and utterly charming Chelsea pub. Very relaxed, great food, super service and loved the fact it was dog friendly and comfortable. Such a nice change from the usual Chelsea “on trend” establishments.
V. D.
Absolutely delicious Sunday roast. Had the whole chicken for 2 - well cooked, delicious potatoes and gravy. House red is excellent! Staff super kind and professional, despite having just opened a week ago. Will definitely be back to our new local!
I. H.
Great pub. Lovely staff, excellent food, nice guests, excellent atmosphere. I go there regularly because I live Chelsea and my brother lives round the corner.
H. G.
Well, what a surprise it was to find that the place I had my 21st birthday in is still going strong in my absence since ( 29 years ago)!
The maitre d’, Pedro was impeccably mannered, warm and alert to his cause and his staff. You can palpably feel the generosity and respect trickling down through the crew.
They could not do enough to welcome me; finding me a pew and charging my phone.
And it was with great joy and appreciation that I availed myself of one of the best real ales in Blighty;; a pint of Timothy Taylor’s landlord.
Not only this, but I met several very interesting local characters and was even given a post-drink, free , guided tour of the area with the exquisite Hetherington Hatter himself!
I was slightly sore to see that the decor and seating that I remember fondly has all been changed, but it’s all extremely tastefully done and has kept the original charm studiously.
Hamish, the Rabbit Hole, Glastonbury festival.

Wow. If you can find it, it's a gem. Great beer, not overly busy and amazing staff. Recommended.
Edit, 31/3/22 - food is also amazing! Recommend the fish 😊
J. C.
Friendly staff but the food was a little on the stingy side for the price.
It is a lovely venue though and very good service.
M. T.
What a hidden gem. Just off of The Kings Road, nestled between some beautiful mew style houses.
The pub is clean, light and airy. The staff are lovely, friendly and helpful.
The lunch menu is well thought out, with lite bites, mains including a vegetarian / vegan option. I opted for a burger and a coffee, and was pleased by the price, under £20.00... for London that's good, for Chelsea that's cheap.
I'll definitely be back...
N. O.
Really nice little pub with a dining area.
The food was great and the other customers were really friendly. I will definitely be back!
E. S.
My favorite restaurant in all of London. The best chicken liver!!! Geat atmosphere great staff. Cant rave enough about it. Yum yum yum!!! No pics of the livers. I put down my phone a stuffed my face.
P. S.
Always a great time. Thank you to all the amazing staff. Always happy and friendly. Great service, good music and tasty food. See you all soon 🤘
B. M.
All change, but still all good. Great Aperol Spritz and well cared for Portobello Brewery lager. Tip top back soon.
A. C.
Lovely, cosy place with a simple menu. Fresh and well prepared food.
M. L.
Amazing experience here, was having such a lovely time, felt really EXCLUSIVE! Until, an absolute mess come through the doors, with a head scarf on, and demand to be served, even though the staff told her they won’t be served due to not paying her bills. We were then filmed on her camera while she was live on “Tic-tac-toe”, this has been reported to the police for GDPR. I will not be returning until justice is served.
J. W.
Our favourite "local" when we visit London. Their sausages & mash are so tasty we come back for more every time. Quite quiet pub but still busy even on a rainy day. Very homey feel
t. h.
People are here from tiktok to slate this establishment all because they politely refused to serve a customer. Said customer demanded a reason and was told for leaving without paying in the past. She then went into a tirade of abuse over social media filming staff and other customers. Darling it's obvious by your behaviour you aren't welcome
C. M.
Lovely place to dine and socialise, great atmosphere and the staff are all lovely and attentive. Will definitely be a returning customer from here on!
S. c.
Vibrant pub, outstanding food, good variety of wine and other drinks. Amazing Sunday roasts, must try.
K. Ø.
Fantastic gastropub close to the National Army museum. Great interior, warm and friendly. Had duckbreast with red cabbage and mash, really cooked to perfection. Very friendly and attentive service.
A really good selections of ales and a decent winelist too. Highly recomended.
N. D.
Lovely relaxed gastro pub that has sofas and outside seating . Enjoyable to sit and read the papers and watch the world go by in the centre of Chelsea village. Range of bar snacks and full menu. Great range of cocktails and local beers as well.
R. J.
What a nice pub. A bit more like a restaurant. The staff were fantastic and found us a table even though we didn't have a booking and it was a Friday night. We didn't eat but the food looked good and the drinks were great
E. S.
A nice pub but £9.80 for a pint and pack of pork scratchings is excessive! I've flown to Geneva for less than that...
N. G.
Finally popped in for a drink after walking past so many times since living nearby... regret not doing so sooner! Really friendly and informal (yet on it) staff, lovely house cask ale and a great cocktail. Neighbourhood freehouses are becoming such a rarity and this one gets our vote! Cheers!
S. E.
Lovely staff... beautiful produce .... so much attention to detail in the ingredients. The decor is bright and airy ... beautiful day lillies on every table.. real candles.... home baked bread.... just a lovely lovely pub 😊
P. L. R.
Smart gastropub, fits the Chelsea mod well.
P. K.
Brilliant pub fab food highly reccommend it, the woman waitress did so well kick one drunken woman out tonight well done
N. B.
My favourite Chelsea Hangout - Tucked away from the tourist traffic - Genuine free house - lovely staff and excellent free wifi
F. S.
Excellent gastro pub in chelsea. Living nearby...first time but highly reccomended ...
E. R.
Adorable pub tucked down the back streets. Full of character and characters. Also, full of dogs. The staff made mine very welcome, bringing over a water bowl without me having to ask. We came for Sunday roast. The rolled pork belly and homemade Yorkshire puds meal would have scored 10/10 but the soggy roast potatoes let it down. I accept that it's very hard to produce roaesties to order. Other than these, an absolutely fantastic Sunday lunch. Book now for Christmas as I'm sure it's the cosiest place to be in winter.
A. T.
Excellent pub, made even better by the relaxation of the restrictions! Great beer (and gin) selection. Friendly staff, who obviously know their job and do it extremely well. Keep up the good work!
J. T.
Food was really good, great location and staff were knowledgeable and helpful!
M. K.
Went with a very good friend, and we both really enjoyed our meals, and wine.
Polite friendly service, great vibe.
Hidden in the middle of Chelsea.
Recommend.
T. P.
Lovely bar tucked away in the heart of Chelsea. Pricey, but I suppose it goes with the location.
D. G.
Went here for a casual drink and loved the location, quiet residential area. Plenty of outdoor standing space. I was peckish when there and saw bar snacks on the counter top and decided to try a scotch egg. I took a bite and could not believe how incredible this scotch egg was. I am not a scotch egg die hard fan, but am partial to one every now and then. However, after trying this one it was life changing. I would go back to this pub purely for the scotch egg. The barman told me the sausage rolls are also very good which I do not doubt. Highly recommended.
M. F.
Fine atmosphere of cosy local pub and good food
M. B. (.
Lovely little pub with a charming atmosphere. Stumbled across whilst searching for ancestors and was pleased to find it had been around since 1890's +. Warm welcome and not very busy on a we'd 4pm so nice for a cold drink whilst cooling down. I imagine it would get busier evenings as the food looked amazing and the staff were busy reserving the tables. Nice little touch that on the bar you could buy home made jams and fresh allotment Produce nice idea.
Toilets were clean and fresh with nice touches and fresh flowers.
N. D.
Quirky decor which some will love, others won’t (including portraits of dogs in military uniforms). The open fire is a lovely addition for the colder months and the food is absolutely delicious....especially the roasts on the weekend. Bloody Mary’s are never made quite spicy enough but that’s the only niggle for me. Usually have a good few ales on which is a bonus in my eyes. Always made to feel very welcome by the team.
D. M.
Revisited The Surprise after nearly 35 years - no surprise really ! The essential charm of the place remains. Friendly staff, good selection of beers and wines and plenty of comfy chairs. Not many pubs like this left in SW3 - most of the others have morphed into somewhere more formal and less welcoming.
a. m.
Beautiful food staff are lovey thank you.
R. B.
A real gem of a pub, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the Kings Road. The food was amazing, choice of wine was great and the service was absolutely first class. A great find. Thank you to whoever is running the place!, London could do with more such calm and cosy pubs.
D. M. d. T.
What a surprise! A beautiful, small (ish) pub with really great food and an ambience that every pub should have. Friendly, delightful staff, and the manager (Jessie) is just gorgeous. Wow the food is good. We had rabbit and loved every mouthful. But they have steaks and fish, vegetarian, anything you'd want.
We are going back in two days. Can't wait. Just watch out for the bar man from Turin. (Joking, he's wonderful and funny).
C. H.
A delightful surprise was finding this restaurant tucked away in one of the prettiest parts of London. We were a large group of 17 who chose from the Chelsea Flower Show lunch menu and none of us were disappointed with our choices. The portions were generous, the price was reasonable and the service was exceptional. This was a real find and I shall definitely be back.
D. F.
A small pub hidden away between the King's Road and the Embankment. Excellent food and very high quality, but more expensive than most pub food. Also quite large portions, so we were glad we didn't order starters.
Probably worth booking in advance if you want to eat at a regular table (rather than comfy chairs or sofas.) Must be used to very upmarket clients: toilets are for Lords & Ladies (so I assume commoners go outside in the street 😁)
F. T.
Chelsea lee art is on her way to tour establishment .. beware she can’t handle her drinks and tends to shout and fight staff members
h. a.
Dog friendly cozy decor. A real neighbourhood gem. Am looking forward to Jazz on Mondays.
Y. P.
Back street Chelsea pub with quality food and drink. Only downer is that it is on a quiet back street and they were closed on a weekday by 9.30 as there was no one around :(
K. N.
It truly is a surprise as we stumbled upon this pub literally nestled in the middle of a quiet and beautiful neighborhood. The interior is perfectly situated and appointed. The food is delicious and comforting. Larger wine offering than most pubs.
D. L.
Love this pub. Tucked away to keep the locals happy. Good food, pleasant staff and a good beer and wine selection. Menu is always delightfully unusual. Sufficed to say it's the go to for those that want a local taste of the area. Please don't tell anyone about it.
E. P.
Delicious food and pleasant environment!

It was 12.30 on Saturday in early January. I had my heart set on a Bloody Mary, with no horseradish. The mix was already made. When I offered to mix it myself, the rather sulky response from the barmaid was "I don't know where the ingredients are". Given that the place was practically empty, I was surprised and disappointed that apparently none of the three people behind the bar could be bothered to look for them. Our lunch, when it eventually arrived, was good. Not impressed with the service.
N. S.
A nice traditional pub hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the Kings Road. At the right time it can be cosy and welcoming, but if you hit a busy period, the small interior can make it extremely cramped. The food is usually reasonable, and service recently was okay. There was some confusion about the particular wines they had available and it was strange to be offered a half poured glass, which was left over (and I rejected) rather than a fresh one, as eventually supplied - I put this down to the eccentricity of our barman who I've seen there a few times.
G. G.
Very tasty Sunday roast and extremely friendly and accommodating staff! Highly recommended, we will definitely come back
A. B.
Probably to be expected that in the heart of Chelsea the staff can be a little over-it. But I drink here regularly and have no concerns as long as you don't make the mistake of ordering the mulled wine, which the bar staff will smilingly tell you is wonderful (highest mark up) but it's been boiled to oblivion and, the two times I'd had it, was alcohol free and tasted of feet.
A. E.
Keep this one quiet: this is a lovely tucked-away spot for the locals with great beer, wine, and a quirky interesting menu. Lovely place.
My 6 year old son rated the bangers and mash as a 9 out of 10 which is very good for him. ("What could they have done to get 10?" I asked. "Added some vegetables." Fair enough from the young food critic. And there was nothing left on his plate.)
J. A.
Exceptional Sunday Roast! Highly recommend!
P. H.
Very good looking pub in a nice and quiet corner of Chelsea. It was unusually empty for a Friday evening. The food varied in our group from okay to very nice. Service was largely good and helpful, but we had an annoyance where we hadn't finished eating our starter when they delivered our mains, but the staff resolved this satisfactorily.
A. G.
Really good food and wine ☺️
R. B.
Had lunch at the surprise on Saturday - recommended by a friend. I'm so glad we did - the idea of 'English tapas' really does work - despite some initial misgivings. It enables you to have one small course and then decide if you're still hungry - I had potted shrimps and then treacle tart, both delicious. Great 'grown up' atmosphere and very good service. Recommended.
T. C.
The staff is very friendly and the environment very comfortable. They gave us a lovely table with harmchairs and cushions, there is a lovely fireplace too.
Food is good, it could improve but the overall experience was good.
They also allow dogs!
J. D.
This is our local and we are never disappointed ... food excellent and great service. Great for an evening if you are looking for an adults only pub after 6pm. Well done to the team!
S. P.
A lovely little pub with no shortage of style and tasty food. The lamb burger was one of the best I’ve ever had - a real delight. I’ll definitely be coming back!
H. C.
Great to see it under new management as of 2021
J. M.
Not a great menu for vegetarians and a conspicuous lack of hearty, filling meals for a Sunday menu. Nice decor and great atmosphere all the same. Desserts were nice but if you want a roast, you could do better. Also less than average selection of ales
T. L.
Awesome Sunday roast, they offer a sharing option for 2 which is a nice addition to the menu. The 3 of us opted for lamb for 2 and a roast beef followed by fruit crumble and sticky toffee pudding - delicious and plentiful food. Highly recommended.
N. B.
Really lovely pub tucked away in a quiet spot towards old Chelsea. We recently had the Cheistmas party menu which was good, nothing spectacular but nice enough. Staff were excellent particularly Norel who went above and beyond to accommodate the group even dealing discreetly and sensitively with dietary requirements.
A. R.
Yum! Good service, great relatively inexpensive food and an excellent if not extensive selection of booze. Set back from the hustle of Ken and Chels in the edge of a pleasant old village Square. This is the pub you weren't looking for... Thanks for a nice surprise.
R. B.
Lovely little intimate pub/restaurant. Maybe the servings were a bit small but that is nit picking.
L. B.
Very good pub- nice atmosphere and decor. Service is OK compared to some other pubs. The only problem is that not all meals in menu are available. Would recommend it to people who want to relax and eat something casual.
T. W.
With nice atmosphere, able to focus in enjoying good food and drink.
C. T.
Loved the atmosphere at this pub! warm welcoming and great food. Staff were accommodating and friendly. Cosy little jem in Chelsea!
J. E.
Excellent little hidden gem of Chelsea, good service and the Burger which I had was tasty and fresh. Beer lines are clean and the bathrooms also. Will go back!
S. W.
Warm atmosphere, friendly, relaxed and popular grown up venue. One of the best pubs in the area, with a good food, beer and wine selection, although my meal this evening wasn't as good as my last visit.
K. W.
It's a pub in Chelsea that serves food and drink, which is exactly what it is supposed to do. Staff are friendly and usually quite attentive. It gets quite good reviews not because it is anything special, but because it is better than most of the mediocre alternatives.
P. R.
Fabulous pub hidden away from the King's Road. Great food ..fantastic service..beautiful airy interior and nice outside seating area. Would highly recommend.
W. W.
Nice pub - but the staff seemed a bit cold
A. E.
Been here twice for pre-fireworks dinner with friends. Restaurant area upstairs is nicely put together. Service and food pretty good both times
T. J.
Good pub, verging on gastropub with some great food! Enjoyed some beers with a excellent fish and chips dish. Nice atmosphere, this is a pleasant place to enjoy a drink.
D. L.
Very nice staff. Food: perhaps not quite up to the price, even for a pub offering. But the well-heeled locals seem perfectly content so possibly just a random slip-up.
J. C.
Had Sunday roast with a small group at The Surprise. Nice atmosphere and good food. Easy booking made online. Would recommend

A very welcoming pub in the heart of Chelsea. Very nicely redecorated. Beer, food and service were all perfect. A very pleasant evening and dinner. Highly recommended.

(Translated) Upon entering, Surprise became my favorite pub: not dark and heavy like many normal pubs, but bright and friendly, but not cold, but cozy with a great sense of detail from the outward appearance, through the guest room to the toilets.
Very delicious food and imaginative drinks from friendly and competent waiters.
An oasis in the neighborhood, I look forward to the next visit!

(Translated) Nice pub located in Chelsea.
The decor is cozy. It has several rooms: the bar area, a dining room by the fireplace and another smaller dining room at the back of the premises.
Reservation required.
The menu offers a wide selection of dishes.
We ordered: veal sirloin (very good), veal burger with brioche bread and fries (delicious) and apple crumble (good but excessive quantity, to share between four people).
Negative point: the service. It turned out to be unfriendly at first. Despite having the confirmation of the table reserved, we were placed in the worst place, in the back room, right next to the emergency exit. That if, as we were asking for more dishes, they were being kinder.
Value for money: expensive. 30 pounds with wine and dessert.

It is necessary to book.
The menu offers a wide selection of dishes.
We ordered: beef tenderloin (very good), beef burger with brioche bread and chips (very rich) and apple crumble (delicious but excessive quantity, to share between four people).
Negative point: the service. It turned out to be unkind at first. Despite having confirmation of the reserved table, we were placed in the worst location, in the dining room at the bottom, right next to the emergency exit. That if, as we were asking for more dishes, they were being friendlier.
Value for money: expensive. £ 30 with wine and dessert.
