Reviews of The Tavern on the Hill
P. K.
The Japanese food is fantastic and vegan choices are great. I had the vegan burger and the slaw was incredible. The garden is spacious.
The sushi night is especially worth a visit as both vegan and traditional choices are amazing. The choice of non alcoholic drinks is decent too with two types of 0% beers. The staff couldn't be nicer and more helpful, we even got an espresso martini which wasn't on the menu.
Overall a great place. The only improvement could be the toilets being a bit of 90's football stadium style right now could definitely be nicer.

A great Sunday roast! I’m a vegetarian so ordered the vegan roast - was initially disappointed that it didn’t come with a Yorkshire pudding or roast potatoes (they must be non-vegan) but when I asked for them they kindly brought some out for me. And wow - delicious. The vegan wellington was incredible - one of the best non meat options I have had. Was also so nice to have red cabbage with a roast - and the Yorkshire was incredible. Will defs be coming back.

Had a very nice brunch here. Family friendly staff and environment. Decoration is simple, would be nice to see a few sofas etc perhaps in the future as the inside, while clean and consistently furnished is somewhat basic.
Breakfast was delicious. I had the Avocado Hummus and my wife had the Cauliflower option. I also had a lager which was excellent.
Only criticism is that while they accommodated my request for a fried egg instead of a poached one. I requested that the egg be cooked over-hard, with the yolk being very firm/non runny but when it arrived it was a little bit runny. Small thing tbh - I'll definitely be visiting them to try more things from thier menu in the near future.
8/10 Would recommend.

We were excited to visit here and have Mexican food as decent Mexican is lacking in E17. The food itself was ok but we couldn't get over the price - it was more than £10 for loaded fries, I expected a mountain for that but it was a small dish of spread out oven fries with a very small helping of pork on top. We also got the jackfruit tacos which were 2 for £9.50 and gone in a mouthful each. Great selection of drinks and helpful staff so would come back for sure but not order food.

Sunday roast - a short menu but each dish we tried wonderful: beef roast tender and sacculent, lemon and herb chicken worthy of top rating. All the trimmings beautifully tender and well presented. Company- a good mix of locals, families and foodies, oh and a dog or two; football on tv and rock music on but quiet and with the conversation humming.

This is a lovely pub, with delicious Mexican street food, good service & friendly staff. People included those chatting over a drink/cocktails with friends, enjoying darts, football on the TVs, or music - at a volume that was good for all, & new parents, with their baby, enjoying a night out

My new favourite local pub! Friendly staff, amazing japanese food (roast on Sundays) and great local craft beer!

We went here on a game night when England is playing against Ukraine! Their food remains the highest quality! Their steak don with wagyu dripping is just jaw dropping good. Love it!
L. L.
Superb quality of food and drinks. Thoroughly enjoyed the Sunday roast dinner and was delighted to have been offered the opportunity to sample drinks before making a choice. Staff were pleasant and made us feel welcome. Thanks to all.... I'll be back for sure. 👍🏼💯 JM.

Spacious. Very welcoming bar staff. Loads of outside seating. Very dog friendly. Good range of beer. What more do you want?!
(edited because I meant to leave five stars!)

Great roast on a Sunday and lovely to have Wildcard stuff on tap. Brilliant addition to the area having reopened under new management in spring 2021.
S. G.
Outstanding food presentation and deliciously tasty Sunday roast cooked to perfection. Definitely recommend this place to eat. Service was very friendly and welcoming.
A.
Nice accessible place. Personnel was very friendly and food was good! Will definitely come again.

Great pub and a great selection of beers! Need to try the weekday food, but the Sunday Roast is one of the best I've had beyond my Mum's!
D. B.
Ok boozer. Girl behind bar was great as let me try beers before ordering, didn't get her name. They need a best bitter though, never heard of any of them being served.
M. D.
Its owned by a small local brewery so the beer is very good. The outside area is much bigger than it was. It is odd in that the food menu is japanese!
G. E.
Great food - we had the wagyu and chicken burgers with the aonori fries and it was great. Good drinks and nice barman too! Will come again
A. N.
Service was good, family friendly is a plus. But the food? Not good and not worth the money. Plus no deserts and no mains
P. W.
Very nice place, spacious bright and quiet so easy to have chat with friends. Have also tried mushroom burger 🍔 with some special brownish sauce - amazing. Definitely recommend.
A. S.
The food was sensational - Japanese style chicken burger and chips flawless
The steak Donburi was fab too!
And for just over £20
Add in cracking locally brewed beers and this place is a diamond!

What an amazing pub. Me and my husband were in the area to see a friend and happened to stop by here before making our way back. Although I don’t live in the area I’d be happy to return especially for the food.
There was a quiz night on tonight, although it was rather busy the three ladies, who served us were more than happy to help, extremely polite staff.
Speechless about the food, the first pub I’ve been to with a rather different, Japanese Menu! My husband and I both got the steak rice bowl, however I can recommend the gyozas too. Perfect to stop for a drink or even just a bite. Thanks for having us guys.

A big new pub just off Blackhorse Road. Lots of good beer from Wild Card Brewery and others, Japanese food (plus weekend brunch and Sunday Roasts), and lots of outdoor seating. Once we are allowed to sit inside the pub will really come into its own - it's massive!
I'll definitely be back!

Newly opened, loads of space in the garden and very helpful, friendly and willing staff. Local neighbourhood vibe. Food was excellent too. I expect great things from this pub once it all settles down. A fantastic addition to the area

I've known the people who run this pub for years, starting with the original Wildcard Brewery and taproom in Walthamstow village so I had high hopes as their beer is really good, and for people like me who don't drink beer regularly they always had a good selection of other wines and spirits available.
The drinks at The Tavern on the Hill do reflect the talents of the brewers as well as their good choices when it comes to wine. A friend and I polished off 2 bottles of provencal rose on our visit to this new pub.
Opening a new pub in a pandemic is quite a challenge I'm sure. Unfortunately this place to me felt a bit 'meh' - neither a gastro pub, nor a traditional boozer. Something in between maybe, but lacked atmosphere and any particular charm - sorry guys! It's like it isn't sure what it wants to be.
We visited on a Sunday where the Japanese menu is replaced with roasts etc. I had the vegan Wellington and my friend had the chicken. Both were tasty enough but nothing special. Prices matching those locally. I've had better Sunday food elsewhere locally, but I've also had far worse. The miso buttered onion was a nice little addition to the usual sides I must say.
The staff were on the whole efficient, but not overly friendly except for the Scottish guy who served us our drinks and food. He was really friendly and helpful when we had a few issues trying to bring the menu up on our phones!
To be honest I wouldn't go out of my way to go to this pub (it's not in the centre or village parts of Walthamstow where most eating and drinking places are) as it just doesn't offer anything special enough to draw me in compared to places nearer by. It's an OK neighbourhood pub I guess, which would probably get more of my custom if I lived close to it.
3 out of 5 from me as it is right now. Perhaps as time goes on and we come totally out of this pandemic and the place finds its feet more then it might get a better score from me.

Great beer great food, the menu is always changing. Right now it's Mexican, which I haven't tried yet but smells very nice
M. D.
Nice beer but no larger, craft beer prices. This pub used to be called the warrant Office and last century it had a rep of being one of the hardest pubs in London, how times have changed
M. L.
Amazing beer and amazing piano sing along!!! Also serves Japanese food what more could you want!
C. S.
Have had some SICK nights up here man. Sel and the rest of the team are always so welcoming and helpful. Great pub to go for even if just drinks or food too. Heres to more good nights at the tavern 🍻🍻
J. F. P.
Brand new pub and a great addition to the area. Big garden, lovely refreshed indoor space (for when indoor drinking is allowed again), friendly service, covid taken seriously, a great selection of Wildcard and guest beers and delicious Japanese food. Onto a winner!
T. S.
Great pub. Cracking food and Sunday roast. So glad this is my local. Going from strength to strength.
R. T.
Finally proper pub, 2 min walk for me🤪. Huge back garden, Wild Card Brewery one of the best pale ales I ever tried. Highly recommend 👌
P. M.
Outdoor space needs sprucing up and heaters needed during this post lockdown cold snap, but the beer, the food and the staff were all great. Really pleased it’s here, can’t wait to sit in!
R. K.
Good sized garden and a nice, friendly atmosphere. Tasty local Wild Card beer too and enjoyed the Japanese dishes on the menu!
T. K.
Great beer, lovely staff and a great revamp of the pub. Haven't tasted the food yet, but it looks incredible.
K. J.
The best Sunday roast! Crispy potatoes, nicely cooked veg, lots of gravy and all the meat options were cooked beautifully.
M. K.
Great new local! The space is huge and really wonderful beer garden! Food absolutely delicious, look forward to going more :)
M. W.
The new owners, the Wild Card Brewery have done a very good job with the decor its a welcoming place with very good professional staff, as you would expect there is a good choice of ales, wine and the usual spirits, a good food menu including Sunday roasts which attracts families, which is nice to see, and for me it's a very good local pub.
L. H.
Wildcard have made a decent effort with this place to take the edge off. Still has a decent community feel and of course serves great Wildcard beer

A welcome addition to Heigham Hill. The kind of place that lifts a neighborhood. Great selection of beers, straightforward and wholly delicious menu. Outside areas are inviting. Excited to enjoy inside as restrictions allow. All in a decent pub that I am glad to be able to call my local. New Mexico inspired menu is great!
