Reviews of The Wenlock Arms
L. S.
Been here twice now. Great place if you’re into this kind of place. Tons of great beer and brewer ephemera line the walls and surfaces. The clientele ranges from the old locals in the afternoons to the young professionals in the evenings. The bartenders are quite friendly. The food seems limited to packaged snacks, but probably wouldn’t eat anything from this place, prepared or packaged. And the beer is great. Has a strong selection that changes on a regular basis.
C. B.
Excellent independent local pub, nestled away on a backstreet of Islington. A rare find in London nowadays. Excellent beers and bar snacks. Friendly staff who seem to be enjoying themselves as well as being attentive at the bar. Great music on Saturday night too, and a happy and friendly crowd. I'll definitely be back soon!
K. F.
Very rare to find a pub in London that hasn’t been bought out by some massive corporation (looking at you Green King and Young’s), so to walk into an actually ‘genuine and authentic’ pub in central London is a rare treat.
Fantastic selection of beers and the staff know how to have a good time. Always makes a difference when the folks behind the bar look like they’re enjoying themselves. Very quickly has become my favourite pub in central London!
R. S.
As good as it gets for pubs. Great beer, perfect atmosphere and a great mix of people.
M. A.
What a lovely pub. Went there yesterday to get a coke whilst waiting for a lift home after eye surgery at Moorfields. The manager was so nice gave me my drink on the house when I explained the eye patch and said I just wanted to sit on that little bench outside. We had a lovely chat and I went outside to sit down. A young man out there (a customer of the pub) made sure I was ok and got his friend to get out of the way of the bench -aw! Wow - nice nice vibe - thank you!!
M. W.
A wet led pub for drinkers. I’d love to have this as my local. Nice and warm and a fire going. Decent selection of ales. £4.50 per pint for cask so almost west end prices.
D. J.
Best pub in North London. Wonderful beer, great choice and the staff are just so friendly. A must to visit and if you live anywhere in North London make it your local. They really do deserve all the success they can get. A real gem.
A. B.
Very well kept Ales and Ciders. A gem of a Back Street Boozer. Has a log fire.
I. H.
One of the best proper pubs in London. Also references Keith Talent. What’s not to love.
A. “. A.
Genuine, friendly pub with a great David vs. Goliath story. The place is down-to-earth, pleasant, and has "real" ales from a cask. It's not far from transit nor from the canal, so worth dropping in for a pint if you happen to be nearby
J. T.
Great friendly little pub with open fire and great selection of ales and lagers
D. M.
Great friendly pub with great beer
K. H.
Very beautiful mix of the old and the young, the inside and the outside, having food and not-having food
K. S.
Super friendly locals pub, good selection of real ale
Try the baked Camembert too
E. J.
The Wenlock Arms is both London's premiere George Michael pub and also (and not coincidentally) London's Best pub. The beer is kept perfectly and absolutely cracking (try the house brewed Block beers). The toasties are addictive. The staff are all legends. The vibes are huge. Whether you are coming along for a swift one on a Tuesday, of bedding in for the piano sing along sessions on a Sunday afternoon you will be charmed. Unless you don't like George Michael, in which case you don't deserve nice things.
A. S.
Lovely boozer, with a great Scottish landlord.
J. B.
Excellent range of well kept beers. Friendly staff and an open fire. A real gem.
j. d.
Good bunch,friendly staff and clientele.Reasonable prices.Dog friendly.
T. A.
Excellent beer selection, good layout and the neighborhood and regulars make it warm and cozy. The service is very straightforward as I like it, they won't smile or say nice things at you, which I really like. Gimme my pint and get on with life and we are cool. Love this place.
R. M.
Cracking boozer. Five stars all round. Good selection of beer. Roaring fire on a wet and rainy day. Plenty of seats available just before 5pm Friday. Staff seem to follow covid safe guidance to a tee: Mask up, sign in, order at the bar, find a seat, beers delivered to your table.
D. H.
Traditional pub still decorated in its original beer house style. They have 10 hand pumps one of which (when we were there) serves a beer brewed in the cellar and 7 or so top pressure ales. Truly one of the best pubs in London. They don't serve meals, but the bar snacks are very good.
C.
My favourite London pub! Been there so many times. Always go back when in the area! Unique place!
M. N.
A great selection of beers and ales, and that's only within a few steps of the doors.
Attentive and polite bar staff round out a true hidden gem in London. Within a few minutes walk of central London is a true London pub, but without the London prices.
G. C.
Great boozer, with a fun mix of people.
M. B.
Good beer, welcoming staff
Β. Κ.
The bartender was extremely helpful and nice. He actually gave us a little bit of every beer to taste before we made our order. The pies are also extremely delicious. Do check it out if you're in London.
A. G.
It's a good old pub. Unfussy, knowledgeable barman when I visited who knew the history of the pub going back. Unfortunately the world famous hot salt beef sandwich is no longer served, but we guessed times change. Draft craft, and keykegs offer a good choice of real ale. On the whole, nice cosy pub with real log fire.
r. r.
It's a great real ale pub. It's a bit out of the way but since its refurb it's gotten pretty busy. They have a good selection and variety of beers. It's got a good atmosphere and the staff are friendly and helpful. well worth a visit if you're a beer fan.
A. M.
Very friendly staff, helped me through my choice of drinks, giving me tastes before I made my mind :) I'll be back for sure x
P. A.
Brilliant place! Great beer selection. Wonderful people, both sides of the bar. There is always a good atmosphere here. By far my favourite pub around.
C. M.
I love this pub. A real-world oasis in the middle of gentrified London. Great landlord and staff with a perfect mix of locals and newcomers of all ages and backgrounds. Craft beer is the focus but you can buy a pie or a toastie if you have to line the stomach. There's also a dartboard.
C. K.
smashing little London local boozer. Great real ales and ciders - selling traditional Mild when I was there. After a subtle refit this place has been improved sympathetically to provide more drinking room. Worth diverting off City Road for a visit.
j. y.
A true locals pub that’s friendly, warm and inviting. Regularly changing beers and the choice is staggering. I highly recommend the wenlock arms any day of the week as it always has some characters in and never boring.
L. D.
The best local you could ask for...
A. B.
Good, locals pub. Worth a visit if in the area, darts board available too in the corner. Beers were good, gluten free IPA is available on tap.
c. a.
My favourite pub in London . They’ve got the best beer in Town , even your usual choice of beer tastes better at this pub. Staff is lovely and they play good music too !
V. E. K.
Friendly local traditional pub, with a wide selection of well kept real ale! Great barstaff and a roaring fire. Just what's needed on a chilly day. 😀
N. K.
I really like what they've done with this place. The refurbishment did a lot of good in gathering more people and they finally got rid of that smell in the toilets. Staff seem pretty nice and friendly as far as I am concerned they've improved there too. I don't know about the beer yet as I visited at breakfast time but I hope they haven't ruined that one.
T. Z.
This pub has been thoroughly cleaned up over the past couple of years - but is still very much a friendly, local pub.
The range of ales is still excellent, the food is still served in suitably generous portions (I thoroughly recommend the salt beef sandwich - but only if you're REALLY hungry), and the staff are still friendly.
For those of you who remember the old loos, they are GONE! Replaced by modern, clean loos that you can bear to be near. Great result.
If you get a chance to inspect the mosaics in the doorways, see if you can spot the artist's secret "signature".
J. H.
Great old world boozer. You'd never find it unless you were looking for it as it's tucked away on a quiet backstreet. A former working man's pub being slowly surrounded by new flats but its kept its character. Other real ale and craft beer places in London get gentrified into being great drinkers pubs, this place has been the real deal since forever.
T. B.
One of the most famous pubs in London, and worth a visit.
- Great selection of real ales (which change all the time)
- Good mix of crowd (locals, hipsters, tourists)
- Classic style (not overly trendy, not a dump)
N. C.
Great music, wide selection of beers, very friendly staff and patrons who make you feel like a local. Always really fun. My favourite pub in London.
M. Y.
My original review said "If London was a pub it would be the Wenlock".
That was about the old Wenlock, the place has been closed for refurbishment/rebuilding for the last few months and reopens on June 3rd. I had a look in at a private opening party this week and it certainly looks cleaner and lighter. There are 10 new hand pumps on the bar and another 10 or so keg taps for lager-type beers. It's too early to say how well kept the beer will be, or what the atmosphere will be like, but we live in hope!
Clean toilets at last!
B. A.
The Wenlock is worth a visit, great range of beers and generally a good solid place to drink. Whilst it has been modernised, it still seems to be trying to remain a local boozer. So, no real menu to speak of like all the other local pubs. That is no bad thing, besides of which, they do great toasties and scotch eggs.
t. g.
An Oasis. A Great Victorian Pub with Great Beer and can still play Darts
J. M.
This is a great little pub! A little off the beaten track, but perfect for some real ales and because it's such a small place it's great for smaller groups in the early evening after work.
G. A.
I have a soft spot for this locals pub. It has been long known as a haunt for CAMRA (Real Ale) devotees because of the choice of proper beer available. Indeed nowadays it has its own brewery. There seems to be less choice now than when I last came a few years ago when it was thriving. To avoid disappointment for anyone reading this, this is not the place to bring a date or the vicar when looking to impress. It is a typical pub and needs a bit of TLC to restore it to its former glory. Not having the Gents open up in front of the dart board may also be a good idea ;)
S. G.
A pub for drinking, not for eating (although toasties are available)! A great range of real ales, some brewed on site. How excellent this pub was saved from being converted into flats
M. M.
A nice pub, good music and a range of beers and ales on tap. Not too pretentious for the area. A Dj takes away the local traditional pub feel however.
R. D.
Great little pub, especially if you are a real ale fan. Also offers their own brews. Well worth going out of the way for.
D. N.
Marvellous place. Old corner pub, cleaned-up but not too modernised. Very much a CAMRA real-ale place with large range of beers. But also still a real locals' place with genuine character and style. The combination of customers works very well; when we, as visitors, were offered the free plate of sausage & roast potatoes, the locals rightly called foul, but it was all very friendly...
A. M.
My favourite post-work pub in this area. great beer selection, and you can still get to the bar at 7 on a friday night. Nice atmosphere and staff as well.
T. A.
My father ran this pub from December 1956 - December 1958 and it's great to see that it hasn't gone the way of so many other pubs and is, by the look of the reviews, doing very well. Long may it continue.
M. L.
I first ventured into this pub a few years ago and the two pints I had were nice but the pub was a bit of a hell-hole - these were the days when serving real ale was good enough for a pub to be rated highly in some circles. I returned on a recent Sunday to find that the pub had been refurbished. Interestingly it hasn't gone down the automatic gentrification route. The interior colours are in keeping with its Victorian heritage. There are 10 ales on the handpump and there are real ciders too. On my Sunday visit I was impressed by the the number of working class attendees that have become all too absent from most post-pub refurbishments (because of gentrification the term local is no longer valid to describe people and their background.) There is no food served as such but bar snacks are exemplary. I had a sausage roll that was very nice. Unquestionably, this is an "Inn of Distinction."
D. P.
Nice and Friendly places. Food is fine. Ambience is old school and good. Recommended.
J. C.
Owner Marcus showed us his best. He had some nice beers on a hot day during the anual charitycup. A nice pub with good beers and even better company.
J. D.
Best pub in London
T. H.
This might be favourite pub in London. This is why:
1) They're serious about there beer.
2) Pub quiz without any questions like 'who was evicted from big brother this week'
3) Good live music (not a prat singing Eagle Eye Cherry).
4) There are many reasons why this pub could be awful, but like a phoenix from the flames (flames being the City Road and the terrible blend of soulless flats mixed with council estates nearby) it is a sight to behold.
A. H.
Hidden gem with great (and big) selection of beers. Small pub with lovely staff and clientele of local humans and dogs
m. s.
One of the great unspoilt pubs of London, although it is in an area becoming increasingly hipstered . Get there before its spoilt. Always a good extensive range of real ales, and no twatting around with handled jugs
C. O.
I am delighted to live with in walking distance to The Wenlock Arms.It is a quaint, decreet &a terrific find for a clantestian drink.Lovely bar staff.Owned by a sexy Scottish Man.....Girls worth a visit for a double. Bailey's & lovely to be treated with respect.in this day&age when drinking alone can be hard .Lol.Thanks to Peterxxx Love Caroxxx
H. G.
Great local pub with stone & wood Pacific ale on tap, and damn good (and cheap) toasties. One of the best in Hoxton for an after work beer!
R. W.
Great beer choice. Cleaned up since the good old days of cheaper beer (when ale wasn't trendy). But still a great simple boozer.
c. L.
Top pub. Well kept beer. Good range of beer. A good British pub with friendly staff. I highly Recommend this pub.
D. L.
Best example of a London boozer 🍻👌
D. G.
This is the best you will get in central London. The absolute best. Drop all your other plans and go there. My favourite pub in London for over a decade.
M. R.
A decent place and alright drinks, although the atmosphere was a bit too "East End" for me personally. It's a shame the piano sits unused while the darts board gets the soul banged out of it.
P. C.
The Wenlock Arms is the best pub in London, hands down. The Christmas party was off the charts. Treat yourself to a pint or three here.
M. T.
I have used the pub for years and once visited to find it had closed!
Miraculous survival and reopened with better tolet faclities but retained the character and charisma.
Another pleasant visit
Thanks
D. P.
Nice small pub with a lot of character. Pleasant mixture of City and old residents. Good selection of ales and ciders.
J. J.
Nice friendly pub, good atmosphere.
S. O. F.
Simple pub. Real ale palace. Ten casks on tap. Dark Star tap takeover at the moment, and there's something for everyone. Fantastic cider available as well.
L. C.
Lively traditional boozer with great selection of beer, fun staff and good tunes. Sometimes live music. What more could u ask for?! ;)
M. H.
Good to come back here again (I used to play here years ago😁). Great beer and a piano man was conducting a singalong (which he does every other Sunday) Good fun😎.
D. H.
Good old fashioned proper pub
K. H.
Hands down one of the best pubs in London. Specialists in the best small-scale cask ale, they keep it incredibly well.
A. B.
Nice cosy local with interesting ale options
A. K.
Great pub!! Friendly and knowledgeable staff, rare locals vibe and great selection of beer, ale and cider
M. T.
Very expensive for what is a back street boozer in an not particularly nice part of london. £18.60 for a pint and two glasses of wine, which were almost undrinkable
F. L.
One of my favourite boozers in London. Friendly staff, great people and always an amazing selection of beers.
D. L.
A beer-drinker's pub. Traditional decor and a good range of well-kept craft beers. The Wenlock's a local institution - happily going strong.
S. C.
Proper pub. Hasn't been 'shoreditched.' Staff are always really friendly. Lots of local 'characters' in here and no bother. How a pub should be.
C. W.
Fantastic wee pub. Great staff. Some nice food too. I recommend the baked camembert!
R. W.
Great pub with fine and regularly changing selection of real ales (which they really know how to keep). Bar snacks to keep you going too.
M. V.
Nice traditional and authentic pub. Voted one of the most authentic in London by time out and even after that, it still works with the same authenticity
N. H.
Usually a decent boozer but occasionally they have odd opening hours (eg between Christmas and New Year) but they won’t update opening hours online or on social media.
C. D.
Great pub, super beer, real customers, friendly staff.
R.
My favourite pub in London. A little off the beaten track, proper old school community pub vibes, and a huge selection of ales without the pretense.

(Translated) They have high quality craftbeer. We take some handmade Stout pints of the best I have ever tasted. The owner is a very nice guy and he plays good music. Attentive and cheerful. It was named best beercraft 2016 or 17. And charging a pint of high-quality craft beer at just £ 4. AMAZING!
