Reviews of John Gilbert
L. H.
Lovely pub and team! Decorated amazingly for Christmas! Food is superb and the Sunday roast is to die for! Not the cheapest pub in the area but you definitely get what you pay for.
S. R.
Excellent food. They had a staff shortage but informed us in advance and as promised it was exactly 45 minutes before our dishes arrived.
That was good proactive communication to customers. Much appreciated.
Definitely going again.
Our favourite North Manchester food venue.
Z. H.
Love the chicken ranch burger! Always cooked to perfection. Hot & tasty.
The team are very friendly here and always go out of their way to make conversation with you.
The pub looks fantastic, credit to the Manager who always keeps it looking fresh and inviting.
S. W.
Hadn't been here for a quite a while...then ended up going twice in just over a week! On both occasions, food was lovely. Had forgotten how nice the food was. Will definitely be going more regularly again now 😊
S. J.
Have be going to the John Gilbert for well over a decade and always liked the setting and the service there.
It's nice to see how much it's change for the better over the years.
It was dark when we got there and they had the flood lights that change to different colours and a lovely out door setting under cover with rope lights hanging from above which gives it a Island feel.
It has a upper market feel and the thought that's gone into making it warm and inviting interior makes you want to come back time and time again.
Look forward to our next visit.
R. B.
Really nice pub, friendly staff and a great food. Recommend the kofta starter, and the hunters chicken was lovely. Friendly staff and lovely to sit outside on a nice evening
C. S.
Nice pub food and atmosphere... although the table service was a bit slow...we had to ask twice for the table to be cleaned when we sat down...
A. T.
Great place for lunch very tasty
J. H.
Not been for a while and the menu had changed since my last visit. The food was devine! 7 of us all with different meals and everyone loved their choices . Prices were really good for the quality of food too. I will be back there gor sure. Highly recommended. The staff were lovely too.
J. C.
Lovely staff, great food and reasonably priced. Friends all agreed to visit again soon. We were seated in a lovely almost private area and treated very well by Head barman Khris, who was lovely, chatty and interesting. The female toilets were amazing, am sorry I didn't take photos.
J. S.
Really nice food and ambience. Brilliant staff and service, big shout out for Simon and Chris who went above and beyond when a member of our party became unwell. Thanks lads!
A. T.
What a lovely place in a awesome location, great food and good beer garden.
My wife said the man at the bar was a bit short with her and patronising when she went with our son to order food and for the family though
p. w.
My wife ordered roast beef dinner, the beef arrived Rare no option was offered
The waitress did take it away to be recooked
We had to wait a further 5 minutes for the vegetables to arrive
The furniture is in need of replacement
j. B.
If this place would be where I live it would be one of my favorites! Very pretty and quaint. The only downside is that the music went up for no reason and hindered a normal conversation on a terrace where all tables were 2's and 4's. Otherwise, great!
D. T.
It was o.k. I didn't like having to order our meal at the bar when other people in front of you are trying to buy rounds of drinks. Much better to be served at the table.
p. c.
Nicely decorated pub. Food was basic pub grub. Came hot and was tasty. Got a bit loud as the evening went on but still enjoyed the experience.
J. G.
Lovely place inside & out. Very helpful & friendly staff, reasonably priced food. Would recommend to book at peak times.
L. W.
Food variable and when a family member booked online from the Christmas menu, the vegan dishes were wrong. The inference was it has his fault- not sure it's the best customer approach. The staff in general were good but if you want a family feeling for meals don't have your visitors have to walk past an almost vault like atmosphere of local drinkers being loud and rude being unchallenged by staff
T. B.
A lovely looking place. I am very much into interior design and I very much appreciated the quirkiness of this place. Along with the fresh flowers and lit tea lights. Food is a typical pub grub, fresh and tasty. The best part for me was the main waitress/manager - brilliant people’s skills, smiley and a genuinely nice person.
A. W.
Always a great visit and tonight was no exception! Piano Man is king! This guy is talented. Will be back!
A. H.
Although I couldn't falt the place and the staff whom are amazing. Infact they took it from a 2 to a 3. It's trying too hard to NOT be something it is. A greene king. At the end of the day they are supposed to be a family friendly pub with decent prices but I was left a little underwhelmed by the over complicated food. I left hungry which isn't something I always get. The toilets are run down and broken. But as I said the staff are great. P.s the celebrities on the toilets are strange and one has her eyes scratched out.
c. b.
Had a meeting here in the function room, nice lunch too.
K. J.
Easily accessed car park, n bar/lounge entrances, undercover outdoor seats n tables available, venue nicely decorated for Christmas, taking bookings for food n parties Celebrating Christmas, Staff pleasant, quite a selection of food available including, Saturday n Sunday Brunches available, food menus including Vegetarian, Vegan selection, Fish n Meat meals, All food n drinks served at the table, toilets were downstairs n unsuitable for anyone with walking difficulties.
Happy to visit the JG anytime!
J. W.
Pubs good. Wasn't bad for a Wednesday evening. A handful of people in. Good atmosphere
E. C.
Nice selection of vegetarian & vegan food with lunchtime offers. Lovely staff.
m. m.
Good food, nice place and services. The surrounding environment is beauty too.
S. R.
Lovely place, good food, nice space, indoor and outdoor seating, lovely atmosphere, nice chilled background music. Good menu, oodles of choice, as a meat eater there appears to be loads of tasty plant based choices for Veg and Vegan diets. Definitely go back
J. S.
A smoothly oiled machine of a top pub! Great food at reasonable prices, great choice of real ales & lagers & the staff are warm & friendly! That = 5*****
A. Y.
Good food and a great selection of draft beer, recommend.
A. J.
We got married at the beginning of August and a week before the wedding the reception venue pulled out because of staff shortages.
Our first thought was to run round to the John Gilbert to ask if they could fit the 15 adults and 2 children in at such short notice.
They happily obliged giving us our own private room letting us decorate the room and the tables the night before. They saved our wedding day.
The food was outstanding. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed every bite of the meal and all of the sharing platters that we ordered in the evening. The staff were friendly and could not do enough to help us.
I'd like to send a personal shout out and big thank you to Chris and Tony for helping our day go smoothly. There was nothing that we asked that was too much trouble everything was ready and waiting for when we arrived.
Fabulous Day, Fabulous staff and Fabulous food can't wait to go back to the John Gilbert.
M. C.
Went in on speculation. Pub food but fine and well presented.
G. L.
Lovely relaxed atmosphere, lovely staff and food was amazing.
J. T.
The pub has lots of outside space for dining and a large spacious interior. The staff were friendly and the meals arrived perfectly on time.
The food was hot and tasty.
We would certainly return.
D. S.
Love it. Not totally mad on the whole food coming in foil bags but it was very nice.
T. W.
Good pub walking distance of Novotel hotel gets busy if eating but food worth the wait.
L.
Really nice pub with nice staff. Good outdoor seating areas and sometimes have a singer outside. Went for a Sunday roast, which was ok, but not the best. Little bit skimpy on the meat and gravy portion, but still tasty
C.
Great selection of food and drink. Pub is decorated very nice inside.
p. s.
Had a lovely sunday afternoon with family. Great atmosphere, food was brilliant and the staff were great, especially the barman, (not sure if he was the manager). Would recommend this place definitely.
K. J.
Amazing customer service from front of house, and delicious food from the kitchen.
L. B.
Really lovely night out, friendly staff and quick service too
J. J.
This place has nice climate and decor
g. M.
Had booked from 3.30pm to 5.15pm but when we got to 5.10 we didn't want to move. Spoke to the manager who very kindly allowed us to stay until we went on to Zest..
S. F.
Lovely breakfast, great service, and a really nice place to eat
K. L.
Great atmosphere, very clean, there is a good selection of food, service was great and staff were very friendly. Highly recommended.
P. H.
It has been a long time since I was last in the John Gilbert which used to be a regular meeting and client entertaining spot when I worked nearby. We dropped in on Sunday with friends after visiting RHS Bridgewater. Enjoyed an excellent late lunch with a well kept pint of Timothy Tailors. Glad to say that the quality of the food and the excellent service has not changed. However, the menu has moved with the times and I thoroughly enjoyed the 'Chipoffle Burger' my wife and friends were equally pleased with their menu choices as well. Great place, excellent setting, surprisingly peaceful given the pub's setting! Would definitely recommend 👍😊
v. w.
Nice place to sit and have a chill with a drink... Sadly most of the lovely out door seating was for smokers.. Not very nice with ash trays on the table... Dogs allowed outside but not inside.. Staff very friendly.
D. M.
We had sandwiches and the grilled cheese is a must have also the cheesy steak is lush.
N. B.
12 of us arrived unexpected. We were given a small area to ourselves as we were there for a solumn occasion. The staff were friendly, polite and the service and food were of the same quality. We will definitely be paying another visit.
G. D.
Went to the John Gilbert for Fathers Day meal at 5pm on Sunday 20th June as a party of four. All four people ordered the Sunday Lamb Rump. I have been going in the John Gilbert on and off for years and I think it’s fair to say that the quality of the food may have hit an all time high. All our table thought the food was well cooked and presented well with a separate vegetable serving. The portions were generous and no one required a desert. The service was excellent and all the staff were attentive and keen.
The John Gilbert has a lot of competition in the Worsley area and on occasion has struggled in the past but on the evidence of this visit it may be heading for the number one spot.
W. B.
Stunning food and so glad live music has returned on Saturday! The original home of live music for Worsley!
D. R.
Loads of choice of beers and wines. Great staff and friendly staff
P. M.
Service and food outstanding plus building and decor to my taste 👍👍
P. L.
Hurrah! Our first time since July last year we've eaten out in the UK! After going for a stroll I clocked this place adjacent to the Novotel Hotel.
The weather was nice and since the current covid rules allow for pubs to be open and provide food and drink outside we went for it.
We were greeted warmly and it was explained that we had to download the app for table service and we could sit anywhere we liked. The outside was huge offering plenty of space to sit although tables were reserved from 2pm onwards.
The menu had a good eclectic selection for drink and as for food offered the usual falafel, meatballs, nachos etc. We weren't massively hungry just nibblish so we shared a buttermilk chicken and haloumi platter for £13 and Latina fries for £4.50 which consisted of a topping of nachos cheese, salsa , guacamole and soir cream.
To wash this down with I chose a gin cocktail consisting of prosecco, gin and lemonade..it was really tasty!
The presentation was lovely and everything tasted great although I suspected the chips were from frozen. However I did feel that everything was a bit overpriced..there was x3 pieces of chicken and cheese on the sharing platter and everything came to £36 .
Despite this we enjoyed the experience and all the staff were lovely. Probably wouldn't rush back for the food.
S. G.
Friendly, helpful staff. Good food at good prices
S. W.
I went there last night it was a little bit quiet but it's understandable because people are still trying to get back to normal.. the drinks were decent
A. D.
Had a lovely meal and the service was really friendly
F. C.
First pint out after nine months! And first time at John Gilbert after recently moving into the area. We both had a lovely time here and felt very COVID safe, all staff were wearing masks and the tables were all distanced and cleaned before we sat down👍🏼 we will definitely be back again, a great place, we highly recommend 😊
A. K.
The new look John Gilbert is fab. The outside area with plenty of tables, lighting and even live music creates a great ambiance. Well worth a visit or three.
a. m.
Very posh favourite greene King to date. Lovely staff
J. H.
Very good food, pub was empty at dinner, unfortunately the service for food and drinks were slow, if it was faster, more stars would be given
D. F.
We enjoyed a pleasant but small portioned meal here. We only had a main meal but we were still too hungry to eat a sweet so we called at the shop after to get 'supplies' for our rooms. Wouldn't have cost much to have been more generous with the chips, potatoes or veg (without having to order side portions) and then everyone's happy
S. G.
Well organised with good Covid-safe procedures. A nice choice of cask ales that were well kept. Food ok. Sharing platter was very nice but sirloin steak was a bit gristley and lacking in flavour, although it was in some way rescued by a very nice pepper sauce. Pleasant staff.
E. T.
A lovely place to have a wedding reception, good food, good choice of drinks and great service. Very friendly, helpful and welcoming
J. R.
Easter Sunday, Sunday lunch, tasty and filling!
C.
Great pub outside seating really good when it's sunny didn't try the food though
D. B.
Really good quity pub food with a bit more creativity tha you usually get. Friendly atmosphere and a great price. We'll definitely be back.
T. M.
Beautiful food, great service.
T. S.
Last minute booking on a Saturday. Well handled and very considerate. Good food too
c. l.
Excellent service, had not booked but got a nice table on grass area. Staff friendly and helpful. Looking forward to going back once restrictions lifted
S. T.
Good delicious food, think it was a little understaffed (understandable with current circumstances, however the service we experience was slow.. although good 👍)
S. D.
Great menu but far too few staff on a Sunday afternoon.
A. O.
Loved the burgers and dirty fries 🤩 great pub with friendly team. Great value for money to boot 5 🌟
M. R.
The service was really slow and it was hard to find a member of staff. It took 20 minutes to get lattes when we arrived. No staff to greet us. Had to remind the one man on the bar who kept serving drinks to others. Also slow bringing order. Need more staff!!!!! The 2 there were very nice but not enough. Food was good and plentiful. Such a shame. Empty pub not enough staff very slow service.
R. S.
Great choice of drinks and even a g&t menu. Nice atmosphere in here and a live singer on the night in question. Mixed age range of people to which is good. Only problem is this is not in walking distance to any other bar so taxi or nominated driver required.
M. P.
I had the lamb Sunday lunch carvery. Booked table. Paid at the bar, delivered to your table. Food was of a decent standard. Veggies not overcooked & plated up nicely.
B. S.
Amazing place. Beautiful inside, beautiful outside. Had many nights out here and casual drinks in the day; food here is brilliant too! Only thing I would say is I believe they changed the cocktails menu a bit back to make it less impressive and diverse, which was always a major selling point for whenever I brought friends and family across (bring back the better menu!)
T. B.
Lovely pub and friendly, efficient staff.
Played first solo gig here today since lockdown in March. Any pub putting on live music (sensibly of course) at the moment is legendary in my book!
L. P.
Lovely place nice atmosphere but considering we booked table being 6.adults 3 children service was very slow over half an hour to wait for food !! When asked the reply was should have been told half a hour delay! So service let you down!! Considering we book as it was family get together! Food was lovely waiter/waitress would have been better at this busy time of year!
I. T.
I thought it had a great atmosphere. Full of xmas cheer.
C. B. O.
Very nice lunch time meal of gammon, egg and chips (with two eggs for no extra charge). Nice atmosphere considering it was the last day before lockdown and staff all very courteous and helpful.
B. L.
Quick stop off between wedding services and we had a Burger and fries. Omg absolutely outstanding.
S. T.
Food was ok. The steak skewers were tiny and the loaded fries weren't as described. Waited 20 minutes for our coffees to be brought over because the lady at the bar forgot them. When I went to find out where they was I was then rudely ignored by the young boy at the bar. I then said excuse me to which he didn't look up and said ' I'll check now'. Very rude and incompetent staff.
P. R.
Always enjoy my visits to The John Gilbert and not had a poor meal ever. The surrounding are lovely and the staff very pleasant the only draw back is the toilets are down stairs. But there are disabled/ baby change a available on the restaurant floor.
S. G.
First visit, dropped in for a meal on the way home. Nice friendly atmosphere. Meal was good and reasonably priced with a good selection of beers. Staff were very friendly and helpfull. Bit awkward to find if you haven't been there before.
C. B.
Went in late on Sunday for drinks. Quick, friendly service from Curtis who made me and my partner feel really welcome despite it being so late.
J. R.
New Years Eve was fantastic! Band was brilliant and the balloon drop at new year with confetti cannons was a great touch. We only purchased entry only tickets and wish we bought buffet ones as the food looked great. Will be back next year hopefully :)
J. M.
Brilliant place for a good drink and the bar staff were lovley!!
R. D.
It's a nice venue but a bit of a rip off with soft drink prices, which is not good when you're the driver. "Pint" of coke £2.90? Even though the glass is filled with ice first then you actually get less than half a pint for £2.90. My mistake, I should have asked for no ice
P. M.
Gorgeous venue, stunning food and excellent priced for the quality you get
k. x.
Excellent food excellent nights out with live bands I am from Liverpool an I come here all the time. The atmosphere is outstanding really nice people gets really packed too so get there early to get a good space from the weekend bands. Ooh and the food is fabulous 100% love this place.
J. S.
Visited the John Gilbert after a funeral. The pub was beautifully decorated for Xmas with pretty lights etc. and had a cosy atmosphere. The buffet served was tasty, plentiful and had a good variety of items. Would go again if we were in that vicinity.
D. P.
The service was slow, but it seemed under staffed, and they were helpful. Decor is bonkers, very 'eclectic' and hard on the eyes. Food was not great. My sirloin was tough and the 'three times cooked chips' were just ordinary frozen chips. The side order of veg was expensive, tiny and cold. Probably a bad day due to staffing issues, and may return.
T. M.
At present it only has two ales on. One very good (Thornbrige Jaipur) and one not so good(gk IPA). My beef is the need for an app to buy the stuff. As a CAMRA member I visit lots of public houses, why should I be expected to have 200 apps for different pubs on my phone? While some of our colleagues and I'm sure lots of others refuse to have phones, and some are of an older gentionn who just don't have them. How will they get a beer! It's another nail in the coffin of the pub industry.
J. S. (.
Stopped here as the traffic on the motorway wasn't moving. Glad I found this, it's a small gem, modern to contemporary interior (with slightly unusual twists like a metal wall) lots of space, both inside and out.
Very quick and polite service, but I did visit at a quiet time.
Food was enjoyable, I had a chicken burger, which had a bit too much going on / too many flavours for my liking, but I guess you could order it with less of the dressings if preferred. Average portion size with fries as a standard side. Not cheap, but moderate for a place of this size and standards. Overall dropped a star for the price.
Final bits and pieces. Toilets are located on the left side of the building from the main entrance, you have to go downstairs which was unexpected, cloud WiFi and a good outdoor area, which I'm sure will be a delight in summer.
M. P.
Nice Sunday lunch in nice surroundings.
D. B.
Food was excellent, service was excellent. The pub was quiet as we went at 4pm for the £9 meal deal on burgers and hot dogs. The fact that they also put together a meal for my daughter who is gluten intolerant was important to us.
M. A. P.
Not a fault to be given absolutely brilliant staff and amazing food ,very clean and amazing a must visit.
R. C.
Pretty good place for reasonable bite to eat before hitting the m6. Good selection of beyond meat food too.
C. J.
Long long wait at the bar to order food. Lots of people milling around but only 1 very very slow lady on the bar serving. Food arrived very quickly (Sunday roast) and piping hot, so very nice. Although the beef was of poor quality.
T. K.
About time this place ramped it up a gear with the food. It was lovely. The place still feels the same as years ago. Good location to drop in. Had the roast chicken and it was lovely!! Keep up the good work.
B. 2.
Just had a lovely meal at the John Gilbert with two friends. We all ordered different meals and we all really enjoyed them. Service was really good and we had a 50% off voucher which was great but would have happily paid full price for the food - maybe without the dessert :-)
M. R.
Mixed feelings
Dirty, staff were lethargic, slow service; chilli burgers were apparently 'awful" though the small seabass were good!
Wouldn't recommend!
Hopefully they read this and improve their service. For a Saturday they were not particularly busy. Maybe this is the reason?
L. M.
I come here mainly on a Sunday because Fridays and Saturdays can get really busy. They have doormen on in the evening so dress well to avoid being turned down if you have travelled a distance to get here.
Their Sunday carvery is average, the meat is usually over cooked and very dry. The rest of the food on the menu has so much potential but again, always comes out average. You feel let down after paying so much!
Staff are friendly but the doormen can be a bit if a hassle if they want to.
S. P. A.
Always been a great venue. Has had a major overhaul a few years back and is now seeing time for another refresh.
Had our sons birthday here and grandsons christening.
Great place, good value, great food., nice staff.
S. J.
First time here and I won't be going back. Food mediocre. Furniture old and stained. Staff didn't know what the daily crumble was as they said it was apple raisin and cinnamon but when it came it was red in side. I also found a unwanted hair on the side on of my plate. I did get a refund for the 2 desserts. I expected a little more from this place.
M. B.
Lovely place done really glamorous. Service was ok but not particularly friendly. Great selection of unusual cocktails and choice of drinks. Fairly busy for a Thursday teatime. Didn't eat but food looked nice and good deals and choice of food .
m. s.
Couldn't fault it... Food was great and big portions. Staff very helpful. Beautiful surroundings. Will be visiting again and will recommend.
P. J.
Having moved onto the John Gilbert with some friends to meet other friends the numbers swelled to probably over 100 on a Wednesday night, the management were great with serving drinks, friendly atmosphere, great surroundings, we packed the pub out with an absolute brilliant atmosphere for my retirement do. Maybe next time i should tell them. Brilliant effort from all the staff on that night.
A. “.
Stopped for a meal before heading into Manchester. Smart decor, friendly staff and food not bad however limited menu but there was a kids menu. Been here twice now when in the area. Seating outside and hotel right next door, so handy for stop overs.
A. J.
Nice olde worlde decor. Cheap and cheerful pub grub. 2 scampi and chips off the 2 meals for £13.95. Can't complain. Very pleasant staff. I would definitely go again.
J. F.
Went it with partner for first time in year at weekend. Changed quite a bit. Didn't eat, not many were, table service. Quite clearly not keeping to the single household per table rule.
D. B.
Had numerous meals here whilst staying over at the Novotel across the road. Nice big pub with friendly staff. Had a few different meals & starters. Bruchetta with chorrizo and tomato - lovely!... steak was nice, dirty hot dog was massive! but nice and the salad with grilled halloumi that they put together for me on request was also lovely. Good prices... a regular
G. C.
Nice venue, nice food and good vibe. Bar gets too busy and long serving times because of this. Can be waiting 45 minutes to order a diet coke!
G. P.
Good food and friendly service.
B. M.
Nice pub and surroundings but quality of food has gone down unfortunately.
D. A.
Good service nice food, app ordering without WiFi silly
A. H.
Never had a bad meal here. Food is always superb, drink choice is always strong with many real ales and spirits. Live acts and bands to which make for a great evening
K. G. (.
The John Gilbert is a massive pub and good for both food and drink. When walking through Wosley I always like to pop in here and have a couple of beers as you can sit outside and watch the world go buy. Things liven up at night on a weekend and have live bands on from time to time. Worth a visit
S. M.
Good service , great food nice beer 😁
s. g.
Visited on Wednesday for my birthday and they had no vodka! So the visit was short lived!
S. g.
Nice big pub but with more shabby chic styling. Good service and nice food always some thing going on here. Good parking and a quirky lay out making it great for either more secluded meetings or larger groups. Reasonable out door area and great transport links haha defo worth a visit.
E. P.
Stayed at the Novotel and then popped to the John Gilbert for brunch. Menu was great and our food was really good value for money. Thank you :)
H. A.
Ok. Christening in progress. Half a dozen screaming kids running round while parents sat and let them. Was going to eat but left after a drink due to the kids.
Food looked nice from what i saw
D. O.
Excellent value for money. Very nice venue, with plenty of parking. Nice relaxed atmosphere with a great selection of food. Great outdoor seating. Kids welcome and a kids menu available.
H. B.
Lovely place but food was a bit slow coming out
P. S.
Great range of drinks. Excellent service, food and drinks.
M. D.
Went here to celebrate 70th birthday. Excellent evening. Staff couldn't do enough for us. Friendly. Food was good with a varied selection. Recommended.
M. D.
Not been for a few years and I remember it being very busy ,turned up plenty room on car park and pub not busy at all food was good but not great staff didn't clear table when coffee was brought on the whole felt disappointed with the meal and service was expecting the same as last time I was here
B. K.
Fantastic pub and great food. We went on Saturday night so it was busy but they had a band playing and the whole pub was up dancing! Great atmosphere. Will be going again!
G. D.
Good food great service
R. T.
Not really a gastropub but much better than most chains. Food and drink good. Staff helpful and friendly, really looking after our group.
S. P.
Excellent food, lovely atmosphere and very pleasant staff.Very child friendly Two recent visits and looking forward to coming again soon.
A. G.
This place is great looking inside, plenty of room to relax. The food is typical reheated chain pub slop. For this place to call itself a gastropub is fantastical. Unfortunately it's gastropub pricing and wetherspoons quality. It does have parking though.
a. p.
Good quiz on a Thursday
D. C.
Good food. Good beer. Pleasant outlook. Very attentive service.
J. B.
Friendly staff, good beer and very unusual toilets!!!
P. L.
Nice relaxed atmosphere and nice food.Pleasent staff also
A. A.
