Reviews of The Ford Madox Brown - JD Wetherspoon
N. E. R.
What an absolute delight it was to stop off here on the off chance to then be greeted by beautiful attentive staff, in a classically decorated modern bar. Drinks so reasonably priced but the melt in the mouth, medium rare steak with fluffy thick cut chips topped with a homemade pepper corn sauce. It's a basic meal made exceptionally by the way its prepared. I've eaten some expensive steaks but for somewhere you would think is run of the mill, taking the chance you won't be disappointed. After a morning of shear running around to be pleasantly satisfied with the simplicity of decent well cooked standard food has made my week. I would recommend this venue to anyone looking for no fuss but inviting environment with great staff and above standard food. Thank you guys an girls.
T. F.
It's another Wettherspoon's, pretty much like any other. Staff are friendly and helpful. Only criticism is that they had no dark ales, not even bottled.
D. W.
Whilst I’m sure you can fault Wetherspoons for many things, you really cannot beat it on price. With many pints on offer for ~£2 and plenty of dinners for ~£5, ‘spoons will always be a safe option. Decent service, plenty of seating, tables reliable sticky
J. “. j. M.
Popular with students here , I mean it is literally under a huge student digs - and they have great prices, especially on a Monday where all drinks are very reduced. There’s a proper nice seat by the fireplace if you need to warm up. A nice layout and a decent outside bit on the road. This is my favourite Wetherspoons in Manchester I think.!!!
T. B.
The food is really good, the drinks as well and the place is very nice. The perfect place for a night out with friends.
B. B.
Very homely pub with a large food and drink menu. Well managed, clean tables and toilets. Food and drinks served very quickly. Prices are very good and there's always some good discounts on something. Sometimes there can be mistakes with orders and payment.
M. B.
A strange one, we went in on a Sunday afternoon expecting the usual bustling Wetherspoons but it was half empty. Probably because, as we later found out, the fryers had broken down so only offering a very limited menu. Friendly enough staff. We'll try it out again when we're back on the area.
J. D.
Quite surprised with the steak!
Good overall. Queit friendly place to eat with good prices. I had the simple steak (steak and chips) you get a drink within the price I had a coffee (Free refills), the steak and drink was only £10.60. Ordered the steak Meduim rare it came more rare but I don't mind it that way. I was suprised because the steak was actually really good quality and tasted really nice very good meal for the price I would recommend the steak.
N. T.
An alright spoons, average prices and a large amount of tables. Well laid out and slightly cheaper than the one just up Oxford Road
A. L.
A nice and spacious pub with sports on TV for those who are into that. Bar staff and fairly quick and friendly. Food options are okay. It is a nice place for groups to just chill out and chat though.
J.
Nice and friendly place. Staff are excellent and are exceedingly attentive.
A very reasonably priced establishment for food and drink.
Warm and cosy with a few characters frequenting the bar.
Good for solo or group visits and an outside area for the smoker and people who just like to sit outside with a drink and watch the world go by.
Downside is that there is no nearby parking or WiFi available.
c. p.
Just at the end of the curry mile and what a great pub and fantastic chilled feel about it, the food was amazing one of the best pizzas i have tasted. Great food and beer, friendly staff.
D. N.
Quite a nice experience. Feel lovely and cosy on a nice winter night when ya looking for a pint to warm you through. Summer though, sit out and have a cig and a beer and just enjoy yourself :)
R. M. C.
When we visited during Covid there were no [beef] steaks on steak night!
Went yesterday and there were. Nice steaks and mixed grill, wide selection of ales (but no Abbot), good service.
Not overly busy as most students are revising for exams.
Check the arithmetic if ordering on their app' though!
B. H.
Went on a Friday evening and Saturday morning after a gig. Polite staff, good service speed on the Saturday but Friday was a little slow. I can understand that it was busy but one set of drinks took around half an hour. I also got 3 small plates, and so did my friend - two of the plates were great, but my halloumi fries were overcooked and my friends were massively undercooked. I can't fault the place otherwise, it was one of the best Wetherspoons I've been to. Sets a good standard.
D. S.
Good mixed group here. Friendly staff mostly. Good food
P. R.
My partner and I regularly visit on a Sunday morning for breakfast. I can thoroughly recommend the traditional breakfast, it is fresh, tasty and not greasy at all. The coffee is also top notch (Franke A800 coffee machine). Arrive before 10.30am for breakfast as it does start to get a little busy. The Ford Maddox is also great in the evening.
A. R.
Absolutely love it, the fwb come here before every gig always have everything in
S. R.
Come here when I have a hospital appointment nice atmosphere only had breakfast but I've never had no complaints it is what you pay for
M.
Nice atmosphere and a cheap fish and chips for lunch.
J. D.
Service could be faster, nice selection of grumpy customers but the topless bar staff are a bonus. And the free beer, every 3rd pint free. Love it.
J. H.
Great Food, served very quickly. Unusually quiet when I went which was around 12:00 on a Monday. Good Bathrooms which are clean.
S. S.
Great staff and service, shame the food wasn't cooked fully
R. P.
It's a Wetherspoons pub on a single floor. Good wheelchair and walking-impaired acces. Staff are great, food is cooked to spec, service is generally swift, cleanliness is good. No complaints. Its my Go-To pub on Oxford Road in Manchester.
J. R.
Very quiet yesterday early-afternoon but it was raining steadily. I believe it gets busier with students later in the day.
a. h.
Nice place to get a scoop and bite to eat very relaxing and enjoyable
A.
This is a Wetherapoons with a nice charm. Of course, you know what you're getting from a Spoons. You get a decent breakfast for cheap and unlimited coffee for a pound. After a night out, this is the place you wanna be to replemish in the morning. At this location, the food was served incredibly quick and you have unlimited access to the coffee machine. Aside from brektis, they have a lovely selection of ales and beers. This place is a great addition to the curry strip! Head on down and get the BIG full English and try finish it. Cheers!
D. M.
Great prices but not great service. Good value for money though.
r.
Usual Weatherspoons. Very busy. The breakfast was ok. The poor lass doing tables and bringing out the food was run of her feet. Think they could.do with some extra staff
A.
Veryy decent place with affordable liquor.
A. H.
Lovely food and nice staff.
C. A.
Great place, good food and drink, good prices
F. “. T.
Lovely place to enjoy a pint and some food with mates
A. N.
Usual weatherspoons. Great social distancing measures and ap worked. Didn't have to book
H. K.
Fabulous pizza served with a "free" drink
C. B.
The usual Witherspoon good beer &reasonable food prices on a good bus route in &out of Manchester on the ground level so good for wheelchairs a bit on the dark side lighting needs brighting up on Oxford Road
F. B.
Staff are always friendly, impressed with covid precautions
D. D.
Food and service was good.
Value for money
E. W.
One of the cleanest Spoons I've ever been to, if not the cleanest. Service was quick, staff were polite. Food was definitely above par compared to other Spoons pubs, really big portions that were actually very well presented.
M. P.
Nice cider on tap, lots of seating inside
F. Z.
Food great, really nice cosy place, not too loud.
C. C.
Fairly empty when we got there. Prices really good as you would expect from JDW. Asked for Sirloin rare...came out medium rare to medium...not good.
L. H.
Very spacious place with a massive seating area. Food is a bit hit and miss but in general good, exactly what you want from this chain. Refillable coffee is a nice touch. Gotta say the range of food and drink on offer is great though!
T. G.
Nice Spoons just up from the Curry Mile. We've met there a couple of times before going for a meal down the road. Good selection of beers, nice surroundings. A bit studenty, given the area. What's not to like?
A. C.
Visited Saturday mid afternoon for late lunch Prompt attention from polite and helpful staff Food arrived quickly well presented and good portions
App loaded for future visits
O. G.
Very friendly pub, seems to be well run. Good food, quickly served. Management seem to be good at handling issues.
Has to be said though, that the gents loos aren't well maintained. Locks hanging off, urinals leaking etc.
Still better than your average pub, but generally I expect better from a 'Spoons pub
A. G.
Nice, cheap spoons. Plenty of seating available, service was fast and an issue I had with a pint was quickly resolved in a polite manner by the staff.
P. G.
I could call it my hobby: visiting spoons. This one is quite nice. We had a veggie breakfast here and it was decent. The place seemed clean, the toilets were alright. The close proximity to student accomodations indicate that one should expect hordes of youngsters at times but I'm alright with that!
L. S.
Decent prices, busy though, and part of order not delivered after ordering on the app. After enquiry, it took another ten minutes for the drink to arrive. When they're busy they are slow with service so just keep that in mind.
A. S.
It's cheap, some quiet nooks to enjoy a pint. All good!
r. h.
Nice friendly staff, nice food no more said.
E. R.
Standard wetherspoons interior. Food is the same standard as the others but service is fast. Tables are a bit sticky which is my only complaint
K. D.
Great pub, been going there for years. Good service, good prices. Really can't fault it.
K. M.
Very relaxed and pleasant place. I took my two boys to eat. The food was ok. Had a lovely time. Seemed to be a few families as well as students and older people.
Staff very good and obviously prices very cheap on food and alcohol.
Bit difficult to park around there.
A. O.
Ok for quick drink. Food was nice. Advertised drinks unavailable. Whilst sat eating a man approached us asking for money. I always help homeless people out but don't think the staff should be allowing people to walk around asking people for money whilst they are sat eating. He then circulated around the place asking everyone.
S. J.
This was my 4th time visiting and I have always enjoyed a cozy meal with friends here. I had rated this place 5/5 last time I visited but this time I rated it 4/5. There are two reasons. First, the internet reception is really poor if you are sitting on a table in the internal area. You can't order food through the wetherspoon app. Even the WiFi didn't help. This might be a temporary issue but it was an off point. Second, I'm a fan of their food+drink discounted offer but I feel they can add more variety of soft drinks and alcoholic drinks in the offer. Just some temporary suggestions, I'd love to update the review the next time I visit!
J.
Solid spoons, usually have almost everything on the menu. Good service & atmosphere, particularly appreciate the interior design.
C. H.
A good spoons. Does get busy during peak times but food is served quickly. Staff are polite. When the weather is cold, they often have a fire going inside which keeps it pretty cozy.
a. r.
Good food & lovely atmosphere.Even the drinks were not at 'ManchesterPrices'
A. S.
Great place! Love coming with university friends here for cheap quality food. Lots of places inside, usually can manage to find one. The breakfast is also good, it's really nice and quiet to come in the morning. Stuff is friendly and serves fast. One of the favorite places to go.
B.
Amazing service, great food. Was served my food order less than 8 minutes after ordering! Clean and well organised. The blonde waitress is awesome, give her a raise! Better service than a Michelin star establishment!!
R. D.
It's a Wetherspoons and this one is typical of the breed. Mixed crowd from the rowdy to the more relaxed. My visit was for Sunday breakfast. Basic low cost food but some slightly more unusual items on the menu for the more adventurous, smashed avocado bagel for example. Facility to order and pay at table via App is great. Free hot drink refills welcomed.
A. F.
As usual with a Wetherspoons pub, the prices are outstanding. The guest ales in particular are very reasonably price with a varied selection. We ordered a fried chicken burger which was delicious, however the chips served with it were cold and undercooked. We let our waitress know and she took them away and replaced them with a larger serving, this time hot and perfectly cooked. As per, the decor left something to be desired but again the colour of the carpet is not a reason to visit a Wetherspoons.
T. J.
The staff seem a good bunch
S. B.
Now I do like to visit the odd Spoons but today's wasn't one of the gooduns. A very busy pub but looks due for a good clean and a bit more regular table clearing as I had to clear one for myself. But 5* for the really good service at the bar.
D. B. d. L.
This bar is very friendly and well located. I strongly suggest you order the American style pancakes. It has WiFi and screens to watch sports. It is inexpensive compared to other pubs. Beers are £3 and up.
P. D.
As every wetherspoons this place has unbeatable prices for a remarkable food and beer list.
They have a good selection of hamburgers, pub classics and grills. The beer selection is excellent specially taking on account that all the pints are under 3£.
The only problem about this place is that in the bottom part of the local the smell of the bathroom air freshener is perceptible, but anyway there's plenty of room to take any other table
B. S.
Went here for a hangover breakfast is awesome. Nice low lighting, free refills on coffee. All day brunch. Its a w Wetherspoons so you know what you're getting but I really enjoyed myself
C. H.
Love the place. It's a great local with a city feel to it. Can't fault it. Good staff, cheap beer and food always good. This is high praise as I'm not the easiest pleased!
J. M.
Nice pint. Food poor.
B. H.
It's a 'spoons popular with students
a. W.
Friendly staff and good food
J. B.
Can get busy in term time as the university accommodation is very close. The food is good and there's a wide range of beers. The main pub area is very big but as its on a main road in Manchester the beer garden is simply chairs and tables on the wide pavement
T. C.
Good food, open fire and a few chapters of a book. My daughter was in hospital over Christmas and new year with pneumonia. I needed a place warm, change of seen. Excellent and much needed. An not expensive xxx
C. D.
Food is a hit and miss, and occasionally the staff can be slightly rude. One time me and a couple friends bought a lot of food and drinks and our custom was rewarded with “you’ve been here for hours, I think it’s time for you to leave now” which I find extremely appalling considering th amount of money we spent on that day as well as other days as it’s somewhat our local. Obviously the drinks are cheap and food relatively cheap but on the curry mile there’s much nicer food for less money and with a Lidl right next to it I’d say if possible just find a base and get some Lidl drinks and actually nice food from the curry mile.
A. D.
It was very busy when we came to this place, so there was limited space and it was a bit too noisy to talk, so perhaps not the ideal choice of venue, but despite the business we got great fast service and the cocktails weren't too expensive either. Recommended if you like a rowdy place for drinks.
V. L.
it was good ceen some old friends
S. F.
Typical student pub definitely not a cosy place. Staff were friendly and helpful, but there were people coming to the tables begging for money which made us feel uncomfortable. Also a lot of the customers sat outside were very loud and using abusive language. Not a place i'd personally recommend..........
E. C.
It was a very welcoming place and the staff are very pleasant
A. A.
Fort madox is no exception to what you will find in a good wetherspoons. The venue is well located and popular amongst students as there are many private accommodation buildings around the area. Place doesn't get as packed as the spoons at city centre, which makes it a tempting option if you are looking for something chilled. Food tends to be served promptly and is good value for money. Additionally, staff are friendly.
P. M.
Fairly standard Wetherspoons; you know what your getting. The building is quite dark and has a pub feel about it more than a bar. The usual Wetherspoons food, including their cheap breakfasts. It's not going to win awards, but it fills a hole. Watch out for the beggars who sometimes walk in and try to bother people and eye up laptops before the managers chase them out!
M. N.
Good priced drinks
P. P.
Very good place to go on Saturdays beer and food top class
M. S.
Very warm and good pub. Food well balanced ( I had spiced curry) and great drinks choice. Prices good as always :) paid £14 for 2 big meals and 2 alcoholic drinks
S. H.
Cheap and cheerful. Visited during covid. It was clean. Food arrived quickly. It was fine, nothing to shout about but no complaints either.
H. M.
Better 'Spoons than most of the others, it actually feels like there might be an atmosphere there. It's decked out pretty well and is welcoming and cosy. Staff are polite and friendly too.
V. L.
Nice pub but sometimes I don't like staff the acting like owners😂😂
Z. T.
Your average typical spoons style pub - normally full with students but to be expected as so close to the main UoM campus. Standard spoons prices, good size with lots of seating - great for casual drinks.
a. p.
Great for breakfast and WFH👌
D. P.
Quite inexpensive. Especially at breakfast time with the breakfast offers. If you are vegetarian it's probably the best place in the area where you can get a large full vegetarian breakfast in the English style for less than 4£.
W. W.
Decent priced drinks, the food is ok as well but can be cold by the time it gets to you on busy days. The staff are all nice and a good atmosphere.
F. T.
Nice and casual cosy pub with good craft beers and pub food. Popular, and it has a lot of sofas as well. Windows allow to see Withworth park out front, which is nice especially during sunny days.
H. L. (.
Great little Weatherspoons branch. Free refills on tea and coffee including cappuccino, latte etc. Based opposite a park which is a nice walk and bus stops are located just outside so great convenience there.
K. D.
Wetherspoons are rarely gonna get more than 3 star from me. They're all the same. Staff that don't wanna be there largely with the odd one that makes a welcome effort to actually smile, always a bonus, but a fair range of beers. I just wish they coukd make them more like a 'real' pub
C. H.
Bargain price, burger was really nice, but chips were luke warm, but lovely clean nice bar. Would go again as reasonably priced and ideal location to hospital
R. R.
Grear place for Family meal. Great bar team very attentive. Give it a try. We will be back. Live in Northwales but come to Manchester to met up with Daughter at MMU..
J. M.
Nice meals for a good price. Staff friendly
D. H.
Great pub. Atmosphere is fantastic and of course the ale is superb. Great staff
F. v. R.
Your typical Wetherspoon's - loads of Brexiteers here and there and cheap microwaved food. Still a decent place for a quick beer after work unless you're a person of colour in which case I'd say avoid it.
N. C.
Nicely placed in the hub of rusholme, very pleasant interior reminds me of and old reading den, standard spoons prices and food which is always a bonus, there's a good general quiz on every Monday night, and a seating area outdoors, I would very much recommend this pub for a casual pint or dinner.
N. P. (.
Cheap, cheerful, staff were nice, good guest ales
S. R.
Nice place, ambiance and very friendly staffs 👍
B. I.
Great beers for a good price.
s. o.
It is what it is. Basic bit good food, cheaper drinks and nice layout.
L. H.
Great staff and big inside but one thing is lacking. There is no music inside there place.
But they do really good cocktails espesh purple rain and the wine is nice too.
M. M.
Always one of the better 'spoons. Although a new pub set beneath flats, it always offers a good atmosphere (sometimes lively), and a great range of cask ales. Usual JDW food range too. Handy for Whitworth Park and Gallery, and if you visiting nearby hospitals.
S. M.
Perfect place reasonable price
V. J.
This is a Witherspoon establishment that borders the curry mile so provides an ideal half way house to meet up for a few drinks. Does regional ales since its such a big thing now, cooks here are fairly typical and we'll versed in most of the meals. Burgers are a bit of a well done to burnt affair.
M. F.
Nice food.. good menu good selection of beers wines and spirits... a great place for nhs employees with an added discount... highly recommend
a. s.
It's whether spoons innit! The waiter kept asking me if I'd finish when I wasn't and grumbled when he took me plate but I wasn't fussed I thought it was funny. Good beer at ok prices
L. E.
Pretty good spoons, although the tables can be a bit sticky at times, and empty glasses and plates are often slow to be collected.
J. M.
Started sounding last orders @ 11.30 pm rather then 11.45pm and getting customers off the premises inside the permitted legal drinking up time - staff want to finish earlier - one minute nice and pleasant the next rush and pressure
G. D.
Great place for an English breakfast and to just sit drink and chat with friends during a night out . Drinks and food at reason prices.
j.
One of the best spoons about - good value, food of a higher standard of other spoons in Manchester and a good balance of students/workers giving a good vibe
S. H.
Staff were amazing when we booked a group breakfast for around 40 people. Food came out quickly and efficiently and everyone left fed and happy.
P. T.
Good food, good prices and great deals. Only one down side that sometimes TV is bit to loud to have basic conversation with people in your party.
A. J. (.
Decent Spoons. Affordable drinks in the centre of Manchester.
Get the 2 for £12 pitchers. Long Island Ice Tea is the best one.
A. C.
It is a lovely pub, very relaxing and you can enjoy good pint. Not had food so can't say what it is like, the people and staff very friendly
R. M.
ALWAYS HAS A GREAT RANGE OF IPA OR WEISSBIER, STAFF ARE GREAT, SAMPLING,ALMOST USUAL, A PERFECT WATERING-HOLE. FOOD IS AS YOU TELL THEM YOU WANT IT, WITH REFERENCE TO MEAT DISHES, IF YOU DON'T TELL THEM, HOW YOU WANT IT, THEY WON'T KNOW! OVERALL, A GREAT VENUE TO MEET FRIENDS.
P. R.
Went in for breakfast table was very sticky ,breakfast was good and fairly priced
J. J.
Good service and friendly staff with a very affordable drink and food menu. App available for browsing menu and for ordering directly from your table at no extra cost.
M. M.
Very very cheap beers, especially with a camra membership. Had a cheap date with my boyfriend and still managed to afford some very good beers and a pizza for not very much.
S. R.
Lovely pub, food was freshly cooked and lovely customer service
L. L.
Drinks were super cheap. £4 for a pint. But food wasnt great. Was obviously cooked from frozen.
j. m.
Not a bad pub typical spoons, good beer , great food. Staffs a laugh
K.
Good for a cheap pint outside if it's a sunny day. Food is awful so avoid it. Spend a little more elsewhere you'll thank me.
j. w.
Good range of drinks. Comfortable, very clean, good loos! Did not eat but food I saw seemed good.
D. T.
Exactly what you'd expect from a city centre Wetherspoons; it's big, the drinks are cheap, and you can fully expect to see plenty of boozers tucking into a pint at 10am most days.
C. H. (. H.
Good beer, good service, well priced.
M. E.
Great traditional british breakfast. Tasty and it is not expensive. Tea or coffee re-fill is a good point.
a.
Not the best Wetherspoon. But can always get a seat. Staff are friendly. Just full of students who think they own it.
L. L.
Good place to go for easy and well priced food. lots of seats and room large groups. Quick service.
M. V.
Good atmosphere, cheap beer, decent food. A good place to spend the night if you don't have better plans.
G. C.
Amazing value as ever, nice Pizza but 4 meals and drinks for about £20, you can't go wrong.
M. S.
They have nice chicken pasta, but the portion wasn't really enough for me. Cool atmosphere inside.
J. L.
Spoons init, what do you expect? Cheap, high quality Ales, cheap alright microwave food and an okay atmosphere. No complaints
N. R.
A Wetherspoons pub, good by that alone. Slightly dark interior, some gnarly looking blokes but the beer and food is cheap. Goed la have a go.
J. F.
This is part of the Weatherspoon chain so you know what you're going to get foodwise but being so near the University and hospitals you can get a good mix of clientele
A. C.
Cheap beer.... Food a bit hit and miss.... Good days bad ones as well.... Relaxing atmosphere.... Bar staff can be a bit miserable...
A. C.
Not a bad weatherspoons, everything the same really including the homeless and those that come of the street wanting a morning pint. the tables could do with being less sticky
J. B.
We are exceedingly fond of this 'spoons establishment, and we believe it has the most superior carpet of all spoons ever (in our experience), but it could possibly perhaps be vacummed with higher frequency to reveal its true glory. Our further additional suggestions include the following:
- it is 14:23 on Thursday 14th November in the year MMIXX, and there is an outrageous deficiency of Christmas tree.
- mayonnaise on table 21, which resides adjacent to the portrait of our dear friend Konstantin on the righthand side, just before Satan's slot machines, requires an excess of upheavel to release the good stuff within - our dear friend Ezkaban suffered a terrible injury, but fortunately the hospital was in close proximity to the 'spoons.
- tinsel???
We will be back, tbc
P. H.
Standard fare for a Weatherspoons. Nothing amazingly good, but nothing really terrible either. Could do with more than 1 person on the bar though.
A. N.
After a long day if lectures it's nice to head over to the local spoons and have a pint. Atmosphere and prices are great.
M. S.
Classic Wetherspoons, can't quite beat the consistent value for money. Always a decent option to get a tasty and filling serving of food and drink for 5-8£ with the daily deals.
V. W.
Standard Wetherspoon offer. Not the best layout. Decent range of cask ales at low prices.
R. T.
Amazing pub, glad that I found this place when I was in Manchester. Great atmosphere and even better food. Would visit again in a heart beat.
D. B.
Mixed bag some staff are really nice, some staff are incredibly rude. But it's a spoons so it's not gonna be stellar service.
L. V.
Very nice. Friendly staff and polite too. Just wish they had the 12oz steak on.
B. M.
Friendly staff, good prices for Manchester, drinks ordered on the app were brought over quick despite being very busy, overall very impressed!

This is a Wetherspoons. It's a bit loud near the kitchens and at certain busier times ou'd the day. Good for cheap food and group meals or drinks

While the name may sound like a property belonging to Jacob Reece mogg. Don't be fooled. This is a weatherspoons through and through. So you know the score...
