The food was deeply flavoursome and beautifully presented. The steak and eggs were every bit as delicious as I'd hoped. Even the blend of English breakfast tea was complex and carefully considered. The menu is varied, plenty of choice. Friendly staff. Lunchtime was a buzzy but relaxed atmosphere with classic 60s pop playing in the background. Huge, huge fan. Will be back to eat my way through the menu.

Really enjoyed the food here. Very good service. Really great 2 hours. Had Thai burger, halloumi burger, nachos and pancakes. Fried are yummy! Unfortunately we had a load of middle aged rowdy men sat next to us (man City match on). Despite being told to quiten down they didn't. I left with a headache. But couldn't say anything negative about the place.

I booked few hours ahead to get the 50% off food on Mondays. It was already busy at mid-day but all the staff were calm and friendly. We weren't told what were the actual T&Cs of the special offer but I know that we had to order drinks. We ordered Hot Chocolate (£3.40), Latte (£2.90), Brisket Burger (£12.50), Crab Burger (£12.50) and 5 Hot Chicken Wings (£6). The food and drinks came at a reasonable time. I would have expected the hot drinks to be bigger in size like in a taller or wider mug for that price. My OH was slightly disappointed with the size of the crab which was smaller than the burger buns whilst I had no complaints about my Brisket Burger. Both burgers tasted great. We were quite surprised with the Chicken Wings though. They weren't fried but boiled then topped with sauce? We thought the chicken wings were overcooked but there was a kick to the sauce which we liked. Mixed reviews on the food and drink but overall it was a positive experience and we'd visit again in the future.

My sister wanted to go to another restaurant that was unknowingly closed (no update had been made to their website/google) so we happened to be right around the corner from here so thought lets give it a go. We were greeted by a polite host who seated us promptly, the restaurant had customers but wasn't very full. We ordered with the same person who seated us, who again was very polite and attentive as possible. However the busyness of the restaurant went from 0 to 100 and we waited quite a long time for food. Not surprising if the back of the restaurant was as understaffed as the front. The restaurant is deceivingly large having another side to it which is closer to the bathrooms. Dish was not what we expected at all and a bit smaller than imagined. The tea was fresh which was lovely. The taco dish was tasty but seemed pricey just for 2. Hats off to the server who was somehow managing to serve a large full to the brim restaurant of ppl and keep their cool and remain polite and make it a pleasant experience.

Spent a wonderful afternoon here drinking cocktails and sampling the food. The Philly cheese steak is really tasty and the cheesy fries are the perfect accompaniment! We wanted Long Island Iced Tea which wasn't on the cocktail menu but the bartender was more than happy to oblige.

Went here with a couple of friends. It is clean and well organised regarding covid procedures. I really like how it looks inside, has that rustic kind of style which I love. The selection for ale is okay, not great, mainly just lagers, however they are not a bad price. It did have a good selection of soft drinks and cocktails too. The food itself was tasty and well presented, however it was a bit disappointing as we had to send some potatoes back as they were undercooked and they never returned. The staff asked if our food was okay almost immediately after our food came out and then never returned so it was a bit difficult to get their attention again. On the brightside, they did take the dish off our bill, which was appreciated, but at this point we'd decided to get more drinks elsewhere as grabbing a staff member was quite difficult. It was a little disappointing. I wouldn't mind going back but it wouldn't be my first choice. Oh p.s. The cauliflour steak isn't really a steak, more like a giant cauliflour floret however it is super tasty! Not sure what the sauce is but it's really good and I would recommend trying it.

Situated in the smarter section of the Northern Quarter, The Pen And Pencil blends into its Scandi-cool neighbourhood where polo-necks abound and air-cooled 993s look down their Teutonic noses at their stablemates from Crewe. Exposed brick and warm lighting are just the ticket after hours spent poring over Pantone swatches. I unintentionally ended up with an impromptu Surf and Turf after someone else nabbed the last piece of hake. In my mind’s eye I had envisioned a blue crab po’boy and ended up with a delectable sour dough sandwich instead. Yes, it wasn’t lump meat but it was subtle and delicious none the less. Minute steaks have an undeserved reputation for being a cheap off cut to their chateaubriand and sirloin counterparts. That totally overlooks the fact that they are full of rich flavour. Paired with chimichuri and flakes of grana padano, it makes for satisfying fare.

Went last Sunday morning for brunch around 10 am. It started to get very busy so would recommend a reservation. The vibe was ok, the tables were either high bar stools or low benches without a back rest. I had the french toast while my friend had the pancakes. The pancakes were slight burned, with way too much maple syrup. For me the french toast was good, not the best I've had. The coffee was one of the most bitter I have tasted. Staff were friendly and smiley, great service.

Ordered the soft shell crab burger, chicken burger and cheeseburger spring rolls. Food was really good although the chips on chicken burgers plate were like warm. Service was really good, gets quite smokey in the restaurant unless your in the main dining area. Would definitely return!

We had what were quite possibly the best burgers on the circuit. I had the "Buttermilk Chicken Burger'" and the others had "The Real Mac" and the "P and P burger" absolutely gorgeous, quality chicken breast and beef. Plenty of fries which is a pleasant change as most places give only a scattering. My only negative wood be that the chips were on cooler side of hot, I like my food scorching hot. In all, a super place for an informal bite to eat and a beer.

Review of the bar only as we didn’t eat. Quick service and friendly staff. Interesting cocktail menu but it’s a bit try hard - too many cocktails with basil. 2 out of 3 we tried we didn’t like - the monkey hanger margarita and the pink caipirinha were not quite right. The rhubarnsley crumble was good though. You would probably be able to order the classics I imagine to avoid their creations.

Having been to the pen and pencil a few times now, I thought it time to write a review. With friendly staff and great food I’ve been in on nights out and with my family for a meal during the day. A great venue for both food and drink. With a changing food and drink menus I keep on having to go back to sample, I’ve never been disappointed.

After watching all the reviews we decided to try this place in our only day in Manchester. It was quite dissapointing for me. Mac and cheese were horrible, and bacon cheese fries too. My boyfriend was happy with his avocado toast, but defo not worthy for the prize. The place is modern and nice, staff was really nice but that time was a 'no' for me.

I was very pleased with this restaurant. The menu is small, but very well selected, the food was fantastic I had a risotto and my partner had steak, both of which were well beyond our expectations. The customer service is really good there (I cannot remember our waitress's name but she was very attentive and an asset to the venue), they do have an option to use an ordering app, but this does incur an additional charge of 19p. I would highly recommend this place, but please note they don't do desserts, but still a fantastic place to visit.

It would have been more helpful if gluten free options or adaptions were marked on the menu. They manage this well for vegan clearly marked on the menu. This is the first for a long time I have been to a restaurant and had to ask so many questions. The food we had was very tasty but could have been less stressful to select.

Red Velvet French Toasts are nice, and fruit burst tea has got all the flavour and it tastes lovely, pancakes are too sweet though, too much syrup, I would prefer the syrup is given separately instead of just pouring onto the pancakes when they are served, so individual customer can adjust the amount of syrup according to their own taste. Waiter, waitress are friendly, the whole setting is comfortable.

Nice spot with a chilled out, relaxed vibe in the Northern Quarter for brunch or lunch. Good list of food with brunch being served to 4pm and lunch from 12pm. Good range of alcoholic drinks as well as non-alcoholic including a few nice shakes. The beef patty is excellent and the condiments including the tasty pickles are a great accompaniment to the beef patty in a brioche bun. The staff are also pretty chilled and are nice as well.

I got the Pen and Pencil burger, could not have been better, up there with the best burgers I’ve ever had teamed with sweet potato fries and a great pint. My partner had the Buttermilk Chicken burger and she was equally chuffed with that and a wine, all for £23!!!!!! 🤪 OUTSTANDING well done 👍🏼 PS get yourself a side of the Guinness blue cheese sauce, takes them 3 days to make apparently, game changer!

A really nice place, in the heart of Manchester. Rustic, homely decor with plenty of room. The food leaves much to be desired as we were waiting for about 20 minutes just for tap water. I ordered the mac and cheese burger which unfortunately was just a pile of grease that was almost impossible to eat. They offer barely any gluten free options and the options they have are just salads with the gluten containing items removed. Could be a really nice place if the menu was developed a little more. Overall, it's okay.

Cute bar, bouncers lovely on the door. Service was good, friendly staff. Only complaint was the volume of the music; it's a small bar and the DJ had the music at a deafening level, especially when it was reasonably early, not that busy and everyone was sitting down, trying to have conversations. It didn't give me the impression it was a dancing sort of place, but I could be wrong. Otherwise, good amount of seating for its size and assuming it's not that loud during the day.

Amazing staff who went above and beyond. Following my meeting held at this venue I was feeling peckish. Unfortunately, they had officially stopped serving food. Been here several times for lunch or early evening food. Food has always been great and good value for money. Typical gastro pub choices. Staff have always been helpful and friendly and we even got a generous discount once due to fire alarm going off in building next door while we were dining. Would advise you to book in advance as last time we were disappointed to find no tables available when we turned up on spec for a midweek lunch.

The staff are very friendly and accomadating, the only issue we had was with one meal my partner had, when looking to see if there were onion in the avocado, it didn't state anywhere there was but when getting the meal, the sandwich had onion in the avocado which. However, there's usually a wait for tables at weekends so they must be doing something right. Good selection of beers, cocktails etc at reasonable prices. Great atmosphere too. Visited here for the pop up pug cafe on a Sunday morning. The staff were all friendly despite the bustle of humans and pugs! We were served pretty quickly and attentively. The hot chocolate with marshmallows was just how I like it, and arrived quickly. The place itself is tucked away on a corner in the Northern District, and is quite spacious. There is plenty of room to sit on benches or small tables.

A lovely place in the Northern Quarter. We ordered a breakfast here which was delicious. I love the bread that they serve here (I think sourdough) and the tomato and onion chutney. Poached eggs were cooked perfectly and fresh coffee. Very friendly staff.

It was okay. The person serving us was very attentive. The food I had was tasty. However, they charged us all for a coffee or tea, that they suggested we had. It was a limited menu, and they took one of the dishes off the menu due to a missing delivery. Too many dishes were egg based. All in all, expensive for what it was.

Nice bar, funny toilets, food was decent if you fancy a meal before a big night. It gets busier at about 11pm. Good drinks selection if not a tad expensive however this is in fitting with the rest of Manchester and the northern quarter. You will need to reserve a table if you have a large party.
