Absolutely love this place- it’s my new favourite place to eat when I visit Newark. The food is always so tasty, hot and fresh. The staff are pleasant, helpful and always look very smart. The atmosphere there is also pleasant and the toilets are well looked after. Would recommend here to anyone.

Dropped in on the off-chance they had a table free as we had a long journey ahead and hadn't planned dinner! We were met at the door by a delightful young lady who confirmed they had availability and showed us to our table. When my husband turned to go to the bar the waitress asked him to sit down and told us she'd fetch our drinks. Food was delicious, piping hot and plentiful. The staff, from the waitresses to the bar staff were absolutely brilliant and couldn't do enough for us and, we noticed, for any of the guests on the premises. The atmosphere was great, lots of laughter and certainly some banter between the bar staff and customers. Absolutely brilliant night for us and somewhere we will most definitely come again. Would highly recommend this establishment.

We arrived at booked time 2.30 on Sunday and we're very disappointed to be told Roasts had all gone. We were 1.5 hours into a 4 hour drive home from York and had booked based on reviews. I guess our fault for not checking if roast was all day. We ordered alternati es and the food was lovely so no complaints. Would certainly visit again if was in the area.

We attended as a party of 7, the table we were sat at had a strong draft of cold air from under the bench seat. We asked if there was anything that could be done, to be told that they had no control over the vent and also had no where else to move us to so would have to put up with it. The people sat on the bench seat had to try and cover the draft with their jackets as it was that strong. When the food arrived it was ok, the steak was mainly fat however this was rectified by Sam who waited our table. Although the replacement did take a while to arrive. The desserts took a long time to arrive and weren’t great, I wouldn’t recommend. Service from Sam was great however overall experience wasn’t. We are all freezing cold when we left and for the price of the food it was not great value for money.

We came to the Santa paws and it was amazing- we all loved it. Staff and Santa have been amazing and all the dogs behaved impeccably. It was our grandson’s birthday and they even provided a cake and everyone sang happy birthday.- he loved it 🥰 We had the most fabulous time and we will be back 😘

Dropped in after a long day at work and was welcomed with open arms. Out of Guinness, but that's not the staff's fault, so I chose something else. A good pint it was..... Can't fault the food for the establishment this is. It's not a Michelin starred restaurant, so if that's what you're looking for, drive on by and give the staff a break and save everyone's time. Some things are beyond people's control. McDonald's is never far away either, but you'll never get the attention to detail or care for your experience that was provided to me on this evening. Hungry and in need of a rest? You'll get the same level of food as expected from a chain pub. 15% of people will complain about it, but their dog would eat it..... The same 15 % of people that complain about it would feed their home cooking, and their dog would probably leave it. Overall, don't expect gourmet food, and if something you wanted isn't available, then pick something else from the extensive menu. If you weren't happy with the food you probably shouldn't have skimped and would've been better suited to a restaurant where booking a week in advance is advisable. Alternatively, accept this establishment as it is.... Quick, no booking required, fuss free and reasonably priced. Finally....... Big shout out to Amy B and Kacey. Couldn't do enough between them and made the end of a long day a more than pleasant experience. 10 out of 10 on my fingerbowl dipping (tm) scale 🤘

Carvery meals were all lukewarm and had to be sent back to heat them up. The children’s nuggets were dry and inedible. The table position was awkward and one side of the table was blinded by sunshine and there were no furnishings to block it out (no blind or curtains). Staff were lovely.

Went for my daughter’s birthday was a nice meal out but overpriced in our opinion for the actual quality of the food served, staff were friendly and welcoming but slow to clear plates and glasses. Nice relaxed atmosphere though and everyone had a smile on their face throughout and we had a good time

Jodie was a star. Friendly, professional always smiling and she had a really genuine personality. Music was way too loud for such a small venue. Luckily we had a table furthest away bit if we hadn't we'd not have stayed, so worth considering the volume to avoid losing custom.food was pretty good with steak a bit chewy but tasty. Overall Jodie and the service made the experience.

We booked online, which was quick & easy. We were seated as soon as we arrived and a waitress took our drinks order within a few minutes. Food arrived in good time and was hot. Portion sizes were a little smaller than expected but overall my wife and I were happy with our meals. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and was very pleasant to our 4 year old daughter. A wonderful meal out with my husband, with some amazing friendly and welcoming staff. A big thank you to Kaitlin who was only on her second shift but was a real asset to the restaurant team and was even concerned she had messed up when she hadn't. Also a big thank you to Jodie for her unwavering hospitality whilst we were at The Tawny Owl and as we were leaving. Would highly recommend and will definately be back.

We booked last minute and was welcomed with friendly faces. We ordered an about 40 minutes later we received our food, it was fathers day so this was to be expected. After 5 minutes a waitress came and checked on us when I told her my food was cold. I told her I didn't want to make a fuss but she told me it was no fuss at all. 5 minutes later, I had a brand new, piping hot plate of food that was delicious.

Plenty of parking. Greeted nicely and shown to our booked table. Quickly served with drinks and order taken. Food was a bit slow coming out (35 minutes) but that's a minor point as the restaurant was busy. Our waitress, Lexi, was excellent. Table check carried out. Food was first class. Steak was done just as ordered. Good price for the food, drinks a bit pricey. Overall very pleased. Credit to Lexi and the other hard working staff.

Great value for money food! Had the mixed grill on the 2 for 1 menu. Steak, lamb, pork chop, gammon all cooked very nicely. Steak was medium rare as requested. Lovely pitstop for food and a few drinks if you're in the Fernwood area! 👌

Popped in for a pint on our way home from town and decided to have some nibbles. As we were sitting at our table enjoying the drinks, a very attentive server (Lexi), spotted that we were looking at the menus and came over to see what we would like to eat. I had hot maple wings - good portion size, nice and warm + sauce was very tasty. Would have been perfect with a little sprinkle of garnish to add a bit of glamour maybe? Daughter ordered Mac n cheese but wanted it plain, and got exactly what she asked for 😁 Again good potion size, nice and warm and also very tasty. What made the visit especially good for me was how professional, polite and helpful our server was, so thank you again Lexi - Good job!

The staff seem much more friendly and attentive. Some singers were on and that created a nice atmosphere. My only annoyance is that you’re never given a children’s menu. I have to ask every time and I find it quite frustrating.

Meals are served from 11.30 am and we ordered fish and chips and gammon steak. It took about 30 minutes for the meal to be served and it was not freshly prepared and piping hot. The ice cream sundae for pudding was not served until we declared it, and there was no raspberry sauce on it, just a glassl of sundae with a bit of ice cream and a rolled biscuit stuck in it, not like the one in the picture on the menu. The restaurant was noisy during the school half-term holidays when a group of about 20 children and their parents arrived in a group, making it difficult to have a quietly meal. It was disappointing that the waitress did not come to check the service, the pudding was not brought to us unless we declared it, and we had to wait another 15 minutes for the pudding, which was not served immediately after we asked for it.

Called in with my hubby for early tea. We both had the gammon which was absolutely delicious. Special mention must be made to the staff, Harvey, Jodie and Lucy who went above and beyond ...all checking that all ok with our meal. They are an asset to the pub.

Today we was served by Harvey and could not fault his friendly, helpful and attentive service. He is a credit to your company as are the other servers when we visited previously. Lovely meal for a friends birthday tonight. The young waitress Melissa who served our table all night was just brilliant. She was friendly, chatty and nothing was too much trouble. Her customer service was second to none, we observed her helping an older couple on their table and even escorted the older lady to the toilet as she was unsteady on her feet! Everyone was friendly service and meal was good. However we booked online and when we arrived and had ordered our meal we was informed that you was shutting at 8pm for training. We had brought family who lived away and this rushed our evening and would not have booked had we known. It need to be shown online if you want people to book that way.

We were visiting for a special occasion, and because we have visited before and had a pleasurable experience. However, this time that was not so much the case. The carpark was fairly empty so we though, great, should get good service today because there are not too many customers in. Unfortunately this turned out not to be the case. Started with an error in the drinks order with one being brought out at the wrong size. Food order was placed, with a couple of special requests / customisations. Most of these were ok but one was completely missed so had to go back to the kitchen. We were also still waiting for the side orders at this point. Staff member performed a check back, told them everything was good but we were still waiting for the side orders. By the time they finally arrived, the rest of the food was almost finished so they felt a little irrelevant at this point. Team member Kacey who brought them out was very friendly and apologetic - reassured her it wasn't her fault, but she offered to apply a discount to our bill, which was appreciated. We had also brought in a celebratory cake, and the young male member of the team who brought this out was nothing but smiling, helpful and a credit to the company. Unfortunately was unable to get his name.

Had a lovely family meal at Tawny Owl (June 2023), also a few drinks.. fairly quiet night, service both at the bar and table was efficient. Food served relatively quickly and hot. Sadly didn't get name of waitress on the night but she was pleasant and friendly, especially to the kids. It's what I call a fun pub, a Marston's chain. Staff were fabulous, atmosphere OK. Food was good, just portion size, although did order from the lighter bites, but it is very lighter compared to some other establishments. So, slightly my fault. Still enough here to recommend.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Nothing was a bother. Only went in for a drink as we were attending a 40th wedding anniversary. We were told that there was seating at the back where we could enjoy our drink, it was very comfortable and peaceful. Although we didn't have food the meals looked very good. It was busy which is a good sign. Would definitely visit again. Highly recommend.

Booked a table for 4. Two of us arrived on time, two phoned us to say they were held up in traffic, 20 miles away, and would be very late. I explained this to the lady at the bar, she settled us in to our reserved table and we ordered drinks whilst waiting. The waitress was very very pleasant and understanding. Eventually our friends arrived and we ordered our meals, which were speedily delivered and could not be faulted. We did not feel at all rushed and simply enjoyed our visit as we always do at the Tawney Owl. Thanks to all involved and best wishes for the season..

A Gem Among Marston’s Pubs: The Tawny Owl I’ve had the pleasure of visiting quite a few Marston’s pubs (over 30 different ones approximately) and have even lived near several, but The Tawny Owl stands out as the best of them all. Since moving to Fernwood in August 2022, it has become my go-to spot, visiting on average twice a week. What sets The Tawny Owl apart is not just its excellent food but also the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes it more than just an eatery. It’s a place where having a drink feels just as inviting as dining in. The manager, Kayleigh, deserves special mention for her outstanding, approachable and down-to-earth demeanor. She’s incredibly friendly and truly sets the tone for the entire establishment. The staff, including Amy, Harvey, and Sam, are also great. All staff have a wonderful way of getting to know the customers, making you feel genuinely welcome and valued (a testament to Kayleigh’s recruitment methods) Their attentive service ensures that nothing is too much trouble, and they always go the extra mile. As a dog owner, I particularly appreciate the dog-friendly environment. The addition of doggy treats and a dedicated doggy menu is a thoughtful touch that my furry friends and I have thoroughly enjoyed. In essence, Kayleigh and her team provide an exemplary pub experience and deserve every bit of recognition for their hard work and dedication (and I hope this review is shared with them) Regrettably, our upcoming relocation at the year’s end, means The Tawny Owl will no longer be our local spot, which is truly disappointing. We will sorely miss Kayleigh, the rest of the staff, and the superb service that made every visit memorable. We will obviously continue to visit as often as possible before we move.
