Had the most amazing experience at the Merchants Tavern. I booked afternoon tea for my mams 60th birthday. Jenna was so helpful and friendly. Nothing was a problem. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and kept us topped up on drinks too! Can't recommend it enough Thank you so much!

Just had a lovely Sunday lunch at the merchants tavern. I had the chicken and my wife had the pork. Both served with roast and mashed potatoes, a large Yorkshire pudding, carrot and swede mash and cauliflower cheese. Lovely location next to the river, lovely staff and the pub is immaculate and clean. Really chilled atmosphere and served with our lunch within a few minutes of ordering. They also had a starters and dessert menu for any big eaters. Really large portion of dinner and a jug of extra gravy came as standard. Definitely be returning. 👍

This is now a great pub. Lovely helpful staff, good atmosphere and fab food. We really enjoy the Sunday lunch here however we had (off the specials menu) the chicken marsala dirty fries through the week and they were yummy. The rice pud was very good too. Thanks to everyone who works there.

Crumbed Sea Bass was simply amazing, best food I have had for a long time. Already planning a return trip. Went back the following week, Crumbed Salmon in the menu this time. Amazing Sunday sandwich. Didn't want the full roast dinner so had the lamb and the beef in a brioche bun with gravy and a side of cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire puddings. It was amazing and such good value for money! Such a lush place for a few drinks and a bit of banter with the lovely staff.

I have visited the Merchants Tavern every Friday with my best friend for the last four weeks since we came out of stage 3 lockdown. As well as feeling very safe, I also feel very welcomed from the friendly and very customer focused bar staff. The drinks are reasonably priced and the thoughtful menus offer a great choice with something for everyone. My favourite is the Philly Steak sandwich which is served in a fresh bun, the steak is nicely cooked, tender with good flavour and the portion size represents great value for money. Well worth a visit.🍻🙂🥗🥙🍔🍻🍾🍷🍹

I've visited here numerous times now as I live very close. Every single time the service, the food and the over all experience has been faultless. I'd 100% recommend this place to anyone to try. Although there's not much parking, the Q3 bus route runs very close.

Nice place! I hit it after work on Friday with several colleagues. We smashed down some pints (ladies too) then bailed. There is a good choice of drinks on the draught front. Anything else bevvie wise I'm not really interested in. Plenty of outdoor seats there are for the hardy. It was teatime of course and the food handed out to other tables looked great. Prices were quite realistic though not cheap. It's a slight bind to visit. That's probably an issue. The GNE Q buses drop off there for sure of course. However, there's a fully time served club and big brewery a few minutes away so perhaps you could visit those joints as well on your session?

Sunday lunch for two Had chicken as they had ran out of beef (we were accommodated late and last minute) Probably the best Sunday lunch we've had for some time. Huge portions including two massive succulent chicken breasts (each meal) served on a bed of mash potato, roast potatoes etc. with separate lovely and plentiful veg. It was fantastic with exceptional service. Looks like new owners (we have been before and the food and atmosphere disappointed) The pub now appears a lot cleaner, fresher and has had a mini makeover. Will definitely return as much much nicer. Good value for money too. You will be hard pushed to find better. Ps would recommend the starters too (garlic mushrooms and meat balls) really nice, but possibly would not have had if we had know the main was going to be as huge! Well done ✅✅✅

Service on our last visit was fantastic, they went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and everything was to our liking. The food was fantastic - we opted for the kebab and fish and chips, all of which were fresh and tasty. We even left with a takeaway coffee and cake to make the most of the Riverside walk nearby. Lovely pub. Walked past yesterday and tried our luck for a table. The outdoor space had good distance between tables, staff were lovely. Good quality drinks and food choices were fantastic. We did not eat but did check out the menu. Will be visiting again

After taking the dog for a long walk along Hadrian's Way we were looking for a pub that would have the match on. Trouble is we also needed something to eat and had the dog so we're looking for somewhere dog friendly. We found this gem mid walk which fitted everything in. Just to top everything off the staff were unbelievably friendly and accommodating (we didn't book a table but they managed to slot us in.) They provided water for the dog and the Sunday lunches were amazing. Well impressed with this place and I'll definitely be visiting again.

Went with the family for a meal, and I can honestly say it was absolutely beautiful everything was cooked to perfection the steak literally melted in my mouth, all the staff were extremely welcoming and polite. Lovely place will be definitely returning.

Went there for my Sunday dinner, expecting an average meal, but was pleasantly surprised. The veg was cooked to perfection, especially the roasties. We didn't know what to make of the 'gravy', as it was very watery, but it tasted lovely. Not being a chef, it's obviously some other variation. We'll definitely be going back, and will also recommend. Although we didn't try them, the cakes looked lovely too.

Love coming here for either quick coffe on a dog walk or a nice cold drink. Outside seating area is great and inside nice too. Staff always friendly! The Sunday lunches are great. Can not rate this enough. 1 course will fill you, 2 courses you'll be stuffed but for 13.95 it's great food and tmosphere. Nice and chilled place.

New management and a whole new look. Still in 'start up' mode after a complete refurbishment but very promising. 6 real ales on tap and a good selection of other draft beer and ciders. Huge bottle selection. Food menu is still evolving, but the snacks on offer last night were very good indeed and very reasonably priced. This area has needed a well run bistro/pub or pub/bistro for a long time and it looks like we may (at last) have a winner. Ignore the old reviews, this is new, good and and promises to be excellent.

Went for Sunday lunch,six empty tables,we sat down to be told,sorry all the tables are booked but I'll check for you,after a few minutes ,she said that we could stay at the table ,we had a lovely Sunday lunch but at 12 pound thought it was a tad expensive,although very tasty,the staff were excellent, but we were there an hour and never seen another customer come in,still not sure why we were targeted with sorry we are fully booked.?

As a party of 3 we attended a couple of weeks ago to watch a local singer Paige Temperley. We were unsure how, with the restrictions in place, the management would cope with live music and a newcastle match on too. We weren't disappointed. We had booked our table previously and so were directed to use sanitiser on entering and immediately taken to our seats. The one way system in and out of the pub really works well. We really had no concerns. We ordered a selection of tapas which arrived steaming hot and were lovely. Beers, apparently as I was driving, were good, Paige was brilliant and there was a great camaraderie amongst the customers who all appeared to be sticking to the social distancing etiquette. Well done to all the staff for ensuring a safe environment whilst also providing good food, drink and entertainment. Would we go back?? Of course.

I have followed this place throughout it's various metamorphosis for the past 15 years. It became seedy and wretched over the years. The current management took over and opened in December 2015. It has become the 'local' I have always wanted. The food is superb. The staff are friendly and helpful. The music supplied by Digital DJ is of course beyond reproach. Whether you are seeking a place for a coffee stop, a quiet chat, or a great night out I heartily recommend the Tavern!

We were the first and only customers in this morning. After ordering waited 25 minutes for food to arrive, it was just a sandwich for my hubby and eggs Benedict for me.it seemed way too long to wait. Mine however was lovely. My husband's order they got wrong. They had fried egg when he specially asked for it to be removed and replaced with black pudding. He asked for it to be changed. They did, but used the same bread that had the egg yolk smeared still onto it. Luckily he's not allergic!

Nice bar, but the staff need to implement a regime to ensure that the children's highchairs are properly cleaned. On our visit on 18th June the high chairs were absolutely disgusting, judging by the amount of dirt on them they didn't appear to have been cleaned for weeks. You wouldn't eat from a filthy table, so why would it be any different for a child?

Maybe three stars was a bit harsh. When I visited their was only a couple of people in and it was only 4 o'clock. Two girls behind bar never acknowledged me when I came in or thanked me when I left.
