Reviews of The Eight Bells
N. A.
Nice play park outside for the kids. Small soft play indoors. Food is okay, dinner came out after about 10 minutes from ordering. We ordered puddings, which we chose ice cream and they took over half an hour to come. Friendly lady at the bar.
L. M.
All-day Big Breakfast and a cheeky kids menu build your own Sunday... Smashing honest grub.. lots of parking and a kids soft play area.
A. T.
This review is for the recent Christmas dinner I was invited to by my wife and sons employer. The pub is fairly large and for this lunchtime meal the place was very busy. We were a party of approx 20 - 30 people on two tables. Our meals came out quickly and efficiently so we were able to eat together. Starters, main and desserts were all very good quality, well cooked and presented with good portion sizes. I ate here back in the summer and made a note not to bother going back but maybe they've changed the chef because this Christmas meal was excellent.

Updated review as I don't think I gave this place enough credit. Many of times we have dined now and it never dissapoints, great food (especially the different specials), great service, inside soft play area, outside play park with views of the river and wildlife, plenty of parking. The cost is more than reasonable as well, roughly 40-50 £ per visit which is great price for the quality and quantity you get. Below is the Spanish Chicken Breast with Home Made coleslaw. It looked so good I almost forgot to take a photo.
J. L.
Food was amazing and kids enjoyed the outdoor playground and soft play
S. S.
Found this pub randomly on the way back from the Needles. Well priced and nice home cooking style food.
Great sized play area for the kids, and backs onto a canal with ducks and swans.
Why not 5 stars? Not enough pudding options for adults 😂.
W. K.
Lovely pub serving good food and a great service. Nice beer and cider selection and the beer garden is large with soft play and a park for children as well as being dog friendly. Reasonable priced food and drinks and the staff are lovely and friendly
M. D.
Divided up our day at Carisbrooke Castle with lunch at the eight bells. It was a childhood favourite of mine so I was excited to come back and it didn't disappoint. Lovely place, friendly staff and good food with a decent kids menu.
P. B.
Lovely food and nice garden with kids playing area
C. P.
Staff were really pleasant. Despite booking a table, we weren't shown to a reserved table; but pointed towards a table with "You can sit there then". Ok, it is a pub; but people were coming in and out from the garden throughout our meal - in retrospect, we should have moved table. A mistake in the kitchen with our order was very quickly rectified. Food was ok pub grub - could do with a 'home made' touch, especially the very basic burgers and buns.
Some eateries have started putting a tiny flag on meals for people with allergies - this would be a good way for The Eight Bells' kitchens to show customers that they have checked.
We left with the feeling that it's on the up; but needs that added sparkle.

Visited about a year and a half ago, but had brilliant food. Not too busy as it was at the end of COVID. Had the chilli burger and had to take half back on the ferry with me! Absolutely amazing food.
H. P.
Friendly staff and barman, fairly priced and well cooked food. Soft play area for thr kids, can't fault anything. Would come again
A. F.
Great food, reasonably priced. Very helpful with food allergy customer. Great children's play area inside.
P. L.
Great pub, like a tardis, looks tiny from the road but stretches back to a beer garden and play area. Dog friendly, food was good value and staff friendly.
P. U.
Great pub, good choice of ales, food menu offers lots of choices including V. Warm atmosphere, friendly staff. Highly recommended.
B. P.
Nice family place to visit, I visited here on a Friday it was quite quiet at mid day.
There is plenty of things for the kids to do outside from swings, play equipment, bounced castle and more, a few it's of play equipment has seen better days now but it is all looked after and clean, the outside area is a lovely place to sit with some nice views. The car park is a good size as well. We didn't have any food this visit but when we have in the past we have not been disappointed.
I. A.
Friendly staff, great atmosphere and large portion sizes of tasty food at reasonable prices... what more could you ask for!?
P. M.
Big portions of tasty food! Cumfy pub and fantastic indoor soft play, and outdoor playground!
J. B.
Always good food, welcoming staff. What more do you need? Well worth a visit if you haven't been before.
D. C.
Great food. Lovely play area for kids. Great service and reasonable prices. Definitely go again.
I. G.
Nice pub with good food, albeit a little bit on the pricey side. Located in the beautiful village of Carisbrooke on the outskirts of the county town of Newport, the pub is situated only a 10 minute walk away from English Heritage's Carisbrooke Castle.
There is plenty of parking and outside seating, and a large play area that over looks a duck pond. Surprisingly there is no WiFi, which I think is almost a given in any establishment now.
X. L.
(X WAS HERE) Impressive!! Big servings, good quality pub food. Could have been 5 stars but food came 30 mins after ordering. I recommend this place.
R. T.
A good family friendly hostelry in the heart of the community, historic carisbrooke . Deserves better support, like all pubs, or we lose them.
L. M.
Fantastic food, quick friendly service and a happy toddler with a great menu for children!
M. D.
Popped in the other week for a quick pint with a friend, great staff, great prices and the cleanest toilets on the Island.
J. W.
Good food, fast service. Minor negatives experienced kept this from a 5 star unfortunately.
K. B.
After doing a walk around the area of Newport taking 3 hours 🥴🥴this pint at the 8 bells was a piece of heaven😁 grandchildren loved the plate of ice cream with the extas for a snack. Sitting outside too.
K. M.
Such a great place to have a pint, great staff, great atmosphere, and if you have kids, it's got a top play area too :)
T. B.
Great service, menu looked gd, will definitely book next time as only had coffee n cake this time
d. w.
Pulled in spure of the moment , omg what a great place, very friendly staff, service with a smile, decided while having a drink we would sample there food menu, all SEVEN meals came out together and all was very good, so much so we immediately booked a table for Sunday dinner, absolutely would recommend for anyone, could not rate this place high enough.
M. S.
Love the food and the fact that the children have a great place to play 😁
S. B.
Friendly, with good food and a nice range on the menu. The sweet course was a bit similar to most resteraunts at the moment so I just had coffee, but what I had was good. Nice size car park and the garden is lovely too if you visit during the day. They do seem to close very early in the evenings so you do feel a little hurried, but maybe on most nights at this time of year it's very quiet. Overall I enjoyed my evening and definitely would return.
J. M.
We’ll cooked food and generous portions. Pleasant outside seating area and play area for kids.
N. L.
Great food. Friendly staff and Great place to bring kids.
A. B.
Friendly service and excellent food; a good honest pub.
s. w.
not bad
Staff where very nice
Tables were sticky and needs replacing a bit dated
Disabled access there was non couldn't get in the doors an no ramp so unsure why they haven't got 1
I. B.
Good basic fare. Generous portions. Swift service
R. B.
Nice local with good food. Today a fete in the garden with live music and glorious summer weather.
P. M.
Starters were very good, I thought the onion rings were good value considering you get 20 in a bowl. The mains were ok. My chilli con carne was nice but the rice looked and tasted like it had been reheated/microwaved. I don't know that it was, it was just a bit hard and stuck together. Another on my table said their mash was a bit hard and another had an egg missing from their traditional ploughman's. It wasn't a big deal but it would've been nice to have been told beforehand that they didn't have any eggs. It would have also been nice to have been shown to our table when we came in. Other than that the service was quick with dishes and drinks arriving within a few minutes
M. E. S.
Nice place. Lovely food, very affordable. Definitely go again on my next visit to the island.
T. F.
Nice food, only place in the area that did all day food. Play area outside with plenty of seating and soft play area inside.
R. I.
We were very impressed by this pub, it has a brilliant beer garden with loads for the kids to play on, better then most parks, it has views onto a beautiful lake with ducks and swans, its dog friendly with plenty of water bowls and vegan friendly, we enjoyed a delicious vegan korma and Moroccan stew which I would highly recommend and veggie nuggets for kids. They also had a good range of drink options - a hidden gem!
P. C.
We had a lovely Sunday roast here, the portions were a good size and the Yorkshire puddings were massive.
They've got a small soft play area which is great for little ones to burn off some energy before their meal!
A. M.
We recently went to the eight bells for a Sunday Roast while waiting for our ferry home. The roast is priced for a small or regular sized roast. When the roast was delivered the meal seemed like it was on a small plate. When we questioned this the staff came out with the small plate and the regular plate and I can honestly say there was a minuscule difference in the size on the roast. Not worth the extra 3 pounds charged. I will say the roast was tasty however my other half had a terrible piece of beef on the roast.
C. B.
We had a lovely meal, which we both throughly enjoyed. The only slight downside were the steaks which we ordered medium.
Unfortunately due to their thickness the outsides were beautifully med whilst the middles were still bloody. Having said that we finished them.
The portion sizes were such that neither of us could manage a sweet, despite them being very tempting.
B. A.
Reasonable pub and eatery but I think 5 pound 10 pence for a cheese and onion sandwich is a bit pricey so they won't be seeing me again
G. M.
We make sure we visit the Eight Bells whenever we visit the IOW and it never disappoints, just gets better every time!. Food plentiful (even had to leave some!) 😋
A. P.
Sadly have to mark them down, not on the food which was good quality, but the service didn't match. Our server was attentive, but we were under pressure to order dessert before finishing our main meal, as the kitchen was about to close ( this was 8.45pm on a Saturday night!). The desserts were left on the table ( we went outside for a smoke) but they left our main course plates on the table. Then half way through our dessert we were told it was last orders just after 9.15pm!! I understand that due to Covid the hospitality industry has suffered, but all semblance of service should not disappear.
I. D.
Great pub atmosphere, nice relaxing pint on a hot summers day, play area for the kids too
K. H.
Amazing. Way too much food on plate but was really good thanks to Nathan who was so helpful and cheerful thank youNathan
R. S.
The menu is limited as a result of Covid measures. The kitchen closes at 8pm so dont dally if you want food. The quality of the food is ok but not thrilling- two of the people I was with have said they won't be returning for a meal.
The staff are friendly, its clean, good car park, a reasonable outside area with good kids play equipment. Just a shame about the food
L. T.
Had our first meal with you last night. Although very busy we were served promptly. I chose the pan fried liver which was absolutely delicious. Glad I only had the smaller appetite portion as only just managed to get through it - so much of it! Staff were all very attentive and cheerful. Will definitely visit again.
I. M.
Lovely roast dinner with lots of beef and pork.
R. S.
Great little pub. Excellent for kids as there is an excellent kids menu and play facilities in the pub garden. The puddings are superb.
S. B.
Simple pub that serves a good all day breakfast. It has a big car park too, so is a good place to stop off when visiting Carisbrooke castle or passing through the centre of the island.
M. F.
Nice food. Reasonably priced. Lovely staff and atmosphere.
V. S.
Standard chain pub food (cheap/cheerful). Ran out of Sunday roasts -only found out when we went to order at bar (no table service).
J. S.
It's nice but far to many wasps round my drink and food
K. C.
Visited Friday evening. Myself and my girlfriend were greeted by a very friendly young chap whose service was excellent. We selected two meals, a salad and fish and chips, both were excellent. We would thoroughly recommend and hope to return soon when we next visit the island.
s. a.
Lovely meal with a more unusual vegetarian special that went down a treat.
Many thanks chef!
e. c.
Visited for dinner. Arrived shortly before the kitchen closed, but the staff ensured we were able to place our order in time, including dessert. Great food, generous portions and friendly, helpful staff.
L. L.
Good food, good value. My husband struggled to get through the massive, but delicious plate of ribs and he likes to eat! Excellent roast beef Sunday lunch
B. H.
Was lovely, food was great thank you xxx
J. D. D.
Nice pub for a quiet afternoon pint, comfy, plenty of space, dog friendly. Haven't eaten there yet, but have heard good reports.
P. W.
Good food and plenty of it at a reasonable price and good prompt service, very well organized.
T. P.
The food is very nice and the Staff are polite and friendly 👍
M.
Lovely place. Nice beers. Didn't have food here. But the outside tables where people were eating was being invaded by seagulls. If your eating here. Better to eat inside from what I saw.
g. t.
Very nice, the food very good, service good.
I. W. B. R. '. A.
Best ploughmans ever..... At least in the last 20 years of searching for the perfect one. Thank you.
S. H.
Not brilliant service. It was okay just a little slow. Staff didn't seem to want to be there. Food is not home cooked. I had the chicken burger and there were clearly bought in. Nobody else had anything special to say about their meal. Hygiene was poor
T. S.
Nice pub meal. Nice atmosphere.
J. M.
Hadn't been here for several years. It was then a popular place for families and reasonable prices but nothing spectacular. So pleased that we visited as The Eight Bells has been transformed.A much better lay out to the tables , the decor modernised and a completely different atmosphere. Still friendly , good service and a very good menu with light bites, main menu, deserts etc. with many gluten free choices. Very impressed.Excellent parking and all rules relating to Covid 19 in place and adhered to. So good we visited twice within the week!
E. A.
Amazing food and portion sizes that may defeat you unless you're a big eater. I had the most delicious steak, mushroom and ale pie - chock full of beef wirh superb gravy, chips and peas. Absolutely ace and the staff were really pleasant and helpful, too.
b. l.
Excellent food and service. I highly recommend this place
T. J.
Nice family pub with a great atmosphere. Food is good and usually the wait isn't too long. Outside area is great, especially when the sun is shining, with plenty of play equipment to keep kids happy. Good size car park too!
A. M.
Food was really good value for money....Guinness was above average and the seagulls were annoying 🙄
R. R.
Everyone on our table were happy with their meals and puddings we all thought the prices were reasonable and the soft play area was a real bonus
B. F.
I took our lunch club there and we were given a nice table so we could chat. The meals were wonderful and very hot. I have just a few niggles otherwise it would have been 5 stars. The beef sausages were spicy and I did not like them, the garlic bread had hardly any garlic on it. Also the creme brulee was grainy. Apart from that it was a fantastic experience for the club.
T. G.
Had. Mothers day takeout today roasts, ribs and kids meals ordered. All beautiful, packaged great and hot on collection. Great service and can't wait to come in for a meal when we can
J. T.
Very nice and reasonably priced family meal. Served by friendly staff. Plenty of parking and a nice beer garden and playground for the kids.
C. J.
Perfectly acceptable pub lunch in a village with few alternatives
C. M.
Friendly staff and plenty of eating areas inside and out. Family friendly but usually quieter areas if you wish. Large menu and daily specials reasonably priced. Plenty of parking
K. M.
The food is lovely with good service.
Try before you buy, on the Bitters too, don't get that anywhere else!
H. D.
Warm and friendly local family pub. Meals are reasonably priced, with decent portion sizings and come out hot. Drink prices are very reasonable. Atmosphere is great the majority of the time. A top room can be used for hiring out with catering by the freindly staff members.
A. M.
Lovely traditional pub food. Great quality. Best peppercorn sauce ever!
D. S.
Really good food kids could play in the kid friendly garden bouncy castle etc great evening
E. b.
My friends and I eat there regularly for lunch ( on Thursdays) and we are yet to have a bad meal. The staff are lovely too. We feel it is the vest value for money as you always get a very generous amount of food.
S. P.
Good service. Nice friendly pub. Kids outdoor area. Food very good but small portion. Could do with a side salad or more chips to fill the plare up! Reasonable value for money!
A. D.
We visit the Eight Bells quite often. Handy for Newport and ample parking. Outdoor sitting and garden with children's play area. Large sitting area indoors too. There is a good selection of food and while this is not a gastro pub, I found the food very good and the portions generous. Not been there at really busy times, but never had to wait long for our orders. Friendly and helpful staff.
M. A.
Been here before very nice food!! Tasty 😋
M. P.
Went this evening all staff very helpful, clean everywhere. The food was served in good time and was cooked just right. Looking forward to going back again soon.
G. C.
Generous portions of food which was well cooked, the staff are friendly and have good customer care. The inside seating is nice and big and they have a large garden with play equipment for the kids. The Eight Bells also have a large car park. I would recommend this restaurant.

The Eight Bells has been a local pub all my life and it has never failed to deliver. Good food, good price, good atmosphere and friendly customer service. Child & Dog friendly which for me and my family is important. The play park outside is fun for the kids and view of the pond with ducks in the summer is fun for all ages.
A. P.

We haven't been here for a couple of years, we were surprised at how the new owners had improved the pub. The meal was excellent, the price was what you would expect to pay and the staff were very helpful. It was very busy.

D. C.
Haven't been here for a good few months, but it has recently been redecorated. The food was really nice, and a good size portion too. Staff were friendly and helpful too.

Covid distancing in place and strictly enforced which was good to see.
Lovely food, massive portions. Make sure you're really hungry before ordering. Friendly staff.

Food today was okay standard, not a warming welcome, but the bar service was good and attentive.
T. W.
Family friendly pub restaurant. Good food and great service. Highly recommend.
M. D.
Has been our local for over 10 years, but must say since Kevin and Kelly have taken the full helm, they have been fantastic, welcoming and staff very well trained, love the place, would love upstairs to have a pool table and tv for live sports that does not interrupt diners downstairs, and in turn gives a wider audience, would make it 200% great not just 100%
C. B.
Good pub, nice outdoor area, especially for kids. Meals were all good. Postcode on Google incorrect, took us to wrong high Street on the sat Nov, follow directions to carisbrooke instead
J. K.
Friendly helpful staff. Meals were lovely. But they have a very limited gluten free food selection and not much better with vegetarian foods either.
S. B.

There was nothing wrong with the food. The only reason I didn't give it a 4 was we were 8 feet from the Punch and Judy and we had wanted to talk!. We weren't warned so were stuck.

R. B.
Nice food, and an Exceptional Reception/greeting on arrival by a welcoming and skilled member of the team.

Always loved the eight bells. On a sunny day in the garden overlooking a lake full of swans you just cant beat it! Be nice if they cleared away a bit quicker though..especially in the garden!!
A. C.
